[attr=class, bulk] When Yuna had heard there was an entire holiday dedicated to Shiva that was celebrated in the mountains of Sonora, she had jumped at the chance to attend. This world’s aeons weren’t the same as Spira’s, so she had been hoping for a chance to learn more about them. Especially Shiva, since for whatever reason, the ice-clad summon had been the only one to answer her call ever since she’d arrived on Zephon. If anything, that meant that Yuna had a duty to attend and give her thanks to the ice aeon.
Unfortunately the event…didn’t seem to be quite what Yuna had pictured.
The sun had already set, but Yuna could still hear whoops from the ski slopes in the distance as if people were speeding down the mountain even in the dark. It seemed more dangerous that way, but it had looked like a lot of fun. The summoner would have even been excited to try skiing under normal circumstances, but she was still in a bit of culture shock since she had come here expecting a solemn holiday. Feeling a bit lost and unsure of what to do with herself, Yuna decided to bundle up against the cold and take the trail from the resort over to Shiva’s Market. Maybe some colorful stalls and lights were what she could use at this time of night.
The walking path to the market was dark and snow-covered, and Yuna’s breath sent small white puffs up towards the sky. It attracted her attention to the stars overhead, and after a moment, she slowed to a stop to just consider them. The constellations were so different from Spira’s. It really hammered home that she was somewhere else when even the sky was a stranger to her. How had Tidus always managed to have a smile on his face even when he was trapped on Spira and couldn’t make it home to Zanarkand?
Well, that wasn’t true. He’d had his low points as well. Yuna remembered when he’d scream or just laugh like a crazy person and not care what anyone thought of him. He always claimed that it helped, but Yuna had never tried it before without him.
No one was around. An impulse took hold of her, and putting her hands on her hips, Yuna tilted her head back towards the sky. “Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha!” Her voice echoed through the night, and though it didn’t really make her feel better, she had to smile in spite of herself. She really did miss Tidus in moments like this.
Glancing to the side, Yuna suddenly became aware that she was not in fact alone on the trail. “Oh!” The summoner clapped both hands against her mouth, feeling her cheeks turn flaming red. The stranger must have thought she’d lost her mind. “Ah…I’m sorry…” Maybe she should just bury herself in one of the snow piles next to the path.
[attr=class, bulk] The woman that Yuna had bumped into didn’t seem to be hurt or too upset at the interruption. On the contrary, she looked absolutely giddy with wine and dance. In a relaxed tone, she confirmed that she was also just a visitor for today, and she praised the city’s hospitality. “They’ve been very welcoming,” Yuna agreed, smiling slightly at the blonde woman’s enthusiasm. It did something to lessen her own panic. Obviously she was overreacting when everyone else was having such a good time. Yuna must have just not realized how strong the wine was, and now she was seeing connections to Yevon where there were none. Perhaps this night could be good for her if she managed to loosen up.
The blonde woman asked her why she was in such a hurry, but under the haze of the lights and the music, Yuna was having a hard time recalling. “I thought-...You know, I’m not sure. I think it was just my imagination running wild.” That was a relief to admit, and when the stranger held out her hands in an offer to join the dance, Yuna felt like a weight had dropped off her shoulders. “I do love to dance,” she said with a giggle that surprised herself as she took the offered hands and stepped into the circle. “Do you think there are any lost souls in need of sending?”
The last question had been half mumbled to herself as she joined the swaying and twirling crowd. It probably didn’t make any sense to the kind stranger, but to Yuna it was because she almost never danced outside of a solemn occasion like the sending. This was a strange change of pace, but it wasn’t entirely unwelcome. Unfortunately, Yuna had really just started to enjoy herself when she noticed the woman from before was touching her own forehead as if troubled.
“Are you alright?” Yuna asked a bit dreamily, but that was when the music quieted as a priest in blinding robes came out onto the balcony overlooking them. He held a staff in one hand, and the familiarity of it all might have been a little comforting if not for the first words out of his lips.
Holy Bride?
An image flashed through Yuna’s mind of having to face Maester Seymour through a veil while her friends were held at gunpoint behind them. He’d forced her to go through with the ceremony, and then he’d kissed her and-
Yuna flushed and glanced to the side as her dread from earlier came back full force. The haze and numbness were still there, but it couldn’t fully contain her clarity as she looked around at all the visitors in the throng. How had she not noticed before that they were all young women dressed in white? Somehow she hadn’t noticed much at all since setting foot in the temple, but they were clearly preparing for some kind of ritual. Yuna suddenly didn’t want any part of it.
The summoner took the blonde woman’s arm in what was probably too familiar a gesture for someone whose name she didn’t even know yet, but it helped to ground her. “Something isn’t right here,” she whispered, hoping that none of the locals would overhear. And then a little louder. “Will you take some air with me before the trials?”

Oh god they are both so drugged and this keeps escalating lol.
[attr=class, bulk] The woman was gracious about her trip over to meet with Yuna. The clinic certainly wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, but it wasn’t in the center of town either, so it must have been at least a little out of her way. She seemed to be new to Provo though since she said that she hadn’t had much else going on today, and that made complete sense when the woman confirmed that she wasn’t from Zephon originally.
“Etheryis,” Yuna echoed, trying to see if it rang any bells. “I don’t believe I’ve met anyone else from there yet unfortunately, but it sounds like a beautiful place if so many different people can coexist. I hope you can make it home someday.” Possibly a shallow hope since that’s what everyone wanted, but Yuna had known many people here who had seemingly disappeared one day. Maybe they really had made it back to their original worlds.
Yuna also had to smile when the stranger confirmed that she was a white mage who had also trained a bit as a lancer. “I always admire people who have the patience for two different classes. I was considering taking up guns back home before I woke up here.” That was a bit of an embarrassing confession since it wasn’t something she had really admitted to anyone outside of Rikku. Of course her cousin had been very supportive, but Yuna wasn’t sure if the rest of Spira would have approved of their High Summoner running around like that. Not that it really mattered anymore.
Yuna looked at the woman’s offered crystal curiously, smiling at the sight of the healer’s staff emblazoned upon it before looking down at her offered hand. Handshakes weren’t really common in Spira anymore, but Tidus had been more comfortable with them than the traditional Yevon greeting, so Yuna had seen them before. Hoping that she was doing it correctly, she took the woman’s hand in both of hers as she finally introduced herself. “Monori? It’s very nice to meet you. You’ll have to tell me about the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Were they a mercenary group?”
Letting go of Monori’s hand, Yuna gave her a brief introduction in return. “I know you already heard, but I’m Yuna. I’m from a place called Spira originally, but I’ve been in Zephon for a few years now. I joined the Dragonblades out of Torensten, but they’ve been wanting to spread to Provo, so Celes and Caius were nice enough to help me set this place up. It’s still a little small, but I hope to grow it over time. I was a summoner back home, so I hate to think of anyone going without treatment here just because white magic is a little less common.” Not unheard of certainly, but more rare and costly than it should have been. At least in Yuna’s opinion, but she might have been biased given the role of a summoner on Spira. Charging someone for her services there would have been unthinkable.
Monori seemed to notice the sounds of the men back in the exam room, and Yuna clasped her hands together. “If you don’t mind waiting, I need to check on them. It should be fast now that his petrification healed, but he might have a few other wounds.” The summoner hesitated for a moment before glancing at Monori’s glove with the crystal again. Honestly, she seemed so official and qualified that Yuna was interested in seeing some of her magic if she didn’t mind a demonstration.
“Unless you wanted to try? I know that’s putting you on the spot.” It did make for an easy way to interview her though.
[attr=class, bulk] The afternoon was usually a slower time at the clinic for Yuna, since most people were working or had other obligations. In her experience, there was usually an early morning rush and an evening rush, which left her a few hours in between to catch her breath. At the moment, she was down to just one patient—a coeurl had apparently wandered close to the city limits and had managed to petrify one of the farmers bringing their crops in for trade. Yuna had no idea how his friends had managed to carry him all the way to her, since the statue must have weighed a ton. Hopefully they’d made use of a cart and several chocobos. Either way, it didn’t seem like the time to ask, so the summoner just ushered them back into the exam room.
“Esuna,” she murmured over the frozen man after a quick check to make sure that he was intact. It would have been far dicier if anything had broken in transit, but thankfully this one was just a quick spell to fix the status effect. Light washed over him, and the stone surface quickly melted away until the man gasped and slumped backwards onto the table behind him. Yuna smiled slightly and moved out of the way as the three men who had brought him rushed over to talk to him. It was actually good timing—she could hear the tingle of a bell in the lobby which meant that someone had walked in the front door.
“Please, take your time. I’ll be right back—My front office person is out today.” Technically she didn’t have a full-time one yet, but Celes had apparently met some promising candidates, so she hoped to change that in the next week or two. The blonde general said she’d encountered some white mages who had seemed interested too, which would be great for those days when they were completely swamped.
Speaking of, a woman called out as Yuna turned back towards the lobby, and she had apparently been sent by Celes. Picking up the pace to greet her, the summoner shut the exam room door behind her and turned towards the front of the clinic instead. A dark-skinned woman with blue and violet streaked hair stood tall with her staff at attention and a cloak at her side. Coming from Spira, Yuna was fairly used to meeting people of different species—her guardian Kimahri had been one of the cat-like Ronso after all. She had never met anyone quite like this woman though with furry ears on top of her head and a red tail curling around her legs.
Yuna blinked for just a moment before smiling brightly and stepping forward to meet her. “Yes! You’re in the right place, I’m Yuna. Thank you so much for coming all this way.” Out of habit, she gave the woman a bow. Even if the church of Yevon had been proven to be a sham, it was still ingrained in the summoner as the respectful thing to do when first meeting someone. Afterward, she straightened up and gave the stranger’s staff a curious look. “White magic seems to be pretty rare in Zephon. Does that mean you’re from another world too?”
[attr=class, bulk] Yuna didn’t often travel as far south as the Fractured Plains, but she had been there once or twice before to visit the Crystallus Divider. She had hoped then to learn more about the summons of this world and how they differed from the aeons of Spira. Particularly Shiva, since the ice-clad figure had been the only one to still answer her call ever since she’d woken up on Zephon. If the summoner had hoped to learn more about the religions of this world though, she had been sorely disappointed. Outside of a group of people calling themselves the ‘Crystal Order,’ the Divider had mostly seemed to be a tourist trap. While Yuna had been interested in the Order itself, the group hadn’t been particularly interested in answering her questions beyond the surface level. They seemed to be a bit secretive and reluctant to divulge information to someone who was a stranger.
That’s why Yuna had been so intrigued when she had heard about the group’s Day of Welcoming. Perhaps if she went back, she would encounter better results this time.
The Fractured City was entirely different than Yuna remembered it—the people were cheerful and loud, the streets were decorated with banners, and instead of the residents refusing to meet her eyes, she was immediately greeted and grabbed by the hand. A nice woman presented her with a white dress in roughly her size, and though Yuna blushed at having to change in a room with a few other women, she consented to pull it on and stowed away her usual blue skirt and white chemise in her bag. She felt strangely vulnerable without them, but everyone else was in all-white, and Yuna certainly didn’t want to offend them and their traditions. She was there to learn after all.
They provided a feast, and while it was delicious, Yuna was more interested in their chants and prayers. Something about it all had a troubling resemblance to the Church of Yevon, but she did her best to tell herself that she was overreacting based on her own bad experiences. Not all devout religions had a darker side to them. Just because Yevon had manipulated Spira for a thousand years didn’t mean that these people were also being led astray. Religion was comforting and had a sense of order. Yuna was just needlessly dredging up the past.
Doing her best to swallow her discomfort, she followed the crowd to the large temple in the center of town. More out of habit than anything, she even knelt and offered the Prayer of Yevon to one of their holy figures as she silently asked for protection. While the people were understandably confused by her particular hand gestures, they seemed to appreciate the sentiment and plyed her with some sort of mulled wine that warmed her against the chilly day outside. Yuna was not the most accustomed to alcohol, but she’d thought that she could fairly gauge her own tolerance. Apparently not, because after only two cups of wine, the church had taken on a hazy shine and the air felt a bit too warm and giddy. Nothing was inherently wrong with the scene, but Yuna felt a thrum of panic anyway that was dulled by the wine.
It was so different from Yevon and yet so similar. The smiles on the priest’s faces were starting to look painted on. She needed air.
In her haste to get outside, Yuna ran straight into a blonde woman who was only trying to enjoy the dancing. “Oh! I’m so sorry.” She did her best to make sure the woman was alright, feeling suddenly embarrassed by her reaction. Clearly she wasn’t over what had happened on Spira enough to be here right now. “I’m Yuna. Are you just visiting for today too?” She suspected as much—the woman’s cheeks were flushed with either wine or dance, which was exactly how Yuna felt too. The atmosphere had that effect.

Hope you don't mind me joining! Thought it would be interesting since Yuna used to be in a cult.
[attr=class, bulk] It was apparently a coincidence that Celes and Maria looked nearly identical, at least as far as the blonde general seemed to know. She revealed that she wasn’t entirely sure since she had been an orphan of war, which made Yuna frown slightly. “I’m sorry. I know you said once that the empire had raised you.” It made her think of her own parents, but at least Yuna was blessed enough to remember them a little. It sounded like Celes had been young enough that she had no idea who her family even was. With how proud she was of her father’s legacy, that seemed devastating to Yuna.
The look-alike blondes had apparently met when Celes had stood in for Maria while she was being stalked and nearly forced into marriage. Yuna blinked at the strange story. Then she nodded firmly. “I understand. I’ve been forced into marriage before. You were so sweet to help her.” And then, because Yuna did not really consider how odd that was to just insert into conversation, she brightened at the revelation that Celes could sing. “You can sing opera? I’d love to hear it sometime if that wouldn’t be too embarrassing.”
Celes seemed taken off-guard when Yuna asked why she had left Torensten, and the summoner felt a bit sheepish when she said that her planned speech had gotten interrupted. True, they hadn’t exactly had time to talk the day that she had arrived. Yuna was just embarrassed that Celes had come during one of the clinic’s busiest days. It wasn’t always so chaotic, but now that was probably the news that she’d take back to Caius.
Regardless, Yuna listened intently as Celes shared why she was taking a break from Torensten. She hadn’t really thought about how the co-leader of the Dragonblades must have felt when she didn’t usually get as much public credit as Caius. That must have been incredibly frustrating. “No, you’re right. You deserve to take as much time in the field as you need. I’m sure Caius feels the same way.”
Celes also stated that Caius had made it clear that he was in love with her. Yuna nodded along before realizing that Celes had shared the news like she expected it to be a bombshell. “Oh. You mean you…don’t feel the same?” Yuna asked, feeling some heat come into her cheeks. “Oh no. I mean, that’s fine of course! You don’t have to! I just…may have encouraged him once to talk to you about it…” Well this was incredibly awkward now. It’s probably what Yuna deserved for trying to play matchmaker, she just didn’t like to see people sitting on their feelings. She and Tidus could have had so much more time together if Yuna hadn’t let her dogmatic ideas of a summoner’s duty get in the way in the beginning…
But thinking of Tidus on Zephon only brought pain.
The topic came back to the clinic, and Yuna cleared her throat before nodding a bit sheepishly. “It gets pretty busy. Usually with minor injuries, but sometimes with major ones if they can’t afford a hospital. I know I really should hire more people. I guess asking for help has just never been one of my strong suits.” As every single one of her guardians could attest.
[attr=class, bulk] To Yuna’s relief, the truck slowed to a stop next to her, and she was running towards it even before the older man behind the wheel yelled at her to get in. The machina vehicle was high enough off the ground that Yuna had to jump slightly to make it into the worn leather seat, but she only paused long enough to make sure that her skirt wouldn’t get caught in the door before she slammed it shut behind her.
“Thank you so much,” she said, her breath coming out too fast since she’d run all the way out of the ruins. “I heard this area was known for its ancient guards. I just didn’t think I’d run into one.”
The man threw the truck in reverse so quickly that Yuna lurched forward, and she took the opportunity to make sure that her staff and the bloodied bag she’d found inside the temple were both accounted for. Thankfully she didn’t seem to have lost anything during the chase, and as he turned the vehicle down a side road, Yuna started to breathe a sigh of relief.
Of course that was when a thump completely rattled the car as something leapt into the truck bed.
Yuna let out a small squeak of surprise and needlessly glanced in the rearview mirror. She already had an idea of what would be there after all. “I’ll…see what I can do!” Coming from Spira, cars were not her strong suit, but she managed to find the lever that cranked open the window pretty easily. Leaning her upper half out of the truck window, she aimed her staff back at the giant mech while her hair whipped around her face in the wind.
“Blizzara!” While machina might be weak to thunder, she didn’t want to accidentally damage the vehicle too, so Yuna went with ice this time. Hopefully the robot would just freeze and be flung off the back. Hopefully.
[attr=class, bulk] Celes seemed a little thrown off balance by Yuna’s presence, so maybe she hadn’t wanted visitors. The blonde woman accepted the invitation though even if her cheeks were tinged a little red. Yuna certainly didn’t understand why she’d be embarrassed, so she just smiled at her reassuringly and stepped further into the room. Celes had said that she should sit down, so Yuna made herself at home at the foot of the bed by folding her legs under her and smoothing down her skirt. In this position, she felt almost like she was back at Besaid Temple and getting ready to offer prayers to the fayth. But of course she was a million miles away from all of that. Instead she clutched a cup of water in front of herself and looked up at Celes expectantly.
She confirmed Yuna’s suspicious that she’d been reading Caius’ letter, and the summoner shook her head to deny that she’d been woken up. “No, I don’t mind really. I was awake anyway.” As Celes outlined what she’d been laughing about though, Yuna put a hand to her mouth in some amount of horror. “Poor Caius, he probably hasn’t noticed at all. I see why that would be uncomfortable for you though. Is she related to you, or is it just a coincidence that she looks like you?”
Almost under her breath, Celes muttered that she thought she had escaped all that mess, which made Yuna frown in concern. “You know, you never really had the chance to say why you left Torensten…” Was she prying? Maybe gently. She welcomed the blonde woman’s company of course, it was just honestly a little strange to see her and Caius separated. They had been a pair at least ever since Yuna had woken up in Zephon.
“Did…you two have a falling out? It’s just that I usually saw you at the base training recruits while Caius did outside jobs and now you seem to have switched...”
[attr=class, bulk] As they sat down at the counter in the food tent, Yuna laughed nervously when Bartz elbowed her and pointed out that Faris was attractive. “Is he? I didn’t notice…” She would kill for some water to drink anxiously to hide the obvious lie, but nothing was in front of them yet except menus. “I’m glad you two are friends though. But he…probably shouldn’t hit you…” Perhaps that had to do with being a pirate, but it wasn’t very nice of Faris. Especially when Bartz seemed like one of the sweetest people that Yuna had encountered on Zephon so far. Somehow he seemed to get himself in the worst situations though.
The cloaked man whisked the pre-set menus away from them before offering them different ones. Yuna eyed him suspiciously the entire time, sighing when Bartz whispered that he was brave to work with a stutter. “I’d call it more a slip of the tongue.” The unsent didn’t seem to be very subtle here, but maybe they had been dead for so long that they were turning into fiends.
Bartz ordered the pork ramen without having to give it too much thought, and Yuna quickly chimed in “I’ll have the same.” Not because it would necessarily be her favorite, but the carnival had wanted Bartz here for a reason. She wasn’t going to let them poison her friend or do something else nefarious to his food, so she wanted the same thing he was having to test it. He also ordered them two shots of sake, and she was careful to watch the bartender pour them straight from the bottle before she deemed them safe to drink. In spite of herself, Yuna couldn’t help but smile at how excited Bartz seemed about the evening. “To fun and adventure,” she relented, downing the liquor with a slight grimace. She had never drunk much alcohol on Spira, but she was getting more used to it on Zephon. It could be a really nice feeling when she was in the right environment. Unfortunately Yuna wasn’t sure this carnival qualified. She was probably safer here than she had been in that tavern with Ardyn though. It was a low bar to clear.
Bartz suggested that the carousel might be a good place to start after they ate, and Yuna latched onto the idea. “Yes! Anything that doesn’t go too fast sounds great.” A slow-moving circle sounded like the least dangerous option while Yuna continued to investigate the carnival. Speaking of…
A few other live people had trickled in for food, and while the man behind the counter was busy with them, Yuna slid off her stool and did her best to stay low. “I’m going to find a bathroom.” She gave Bartz her best ‘everything is fine’ smile. “Keep an eye out while I’m gone, okay?” With that, she crept behind the counter, doing her best to stay out of the bartender’s sight until she could slip into the back kitchen area. Honestly, Bartz could probably see her sneaking around but hopefully he’d just think she had taken a wrong turn to the bathroom. Or maybe he’d finally realize something was wrong.
Unlike the front of the food stall which had plenty of lamps, the back was very dimly lit. There were delicious food smells wafting through the air, but Yuna had to squint to see everything by the light of the cooking fires. There were a few figures scuttling around and preparing the food, and Yuna took a step back when one of them looked at her. She barely had time to register that the creature was all bones and claws when all the lights in the kitchen suddenly flickered out.
With her heart pounding, Yuna wrenched her dagger out of her sash, wishing she could have brought her staff. It would have to do though as her magical focus. “Shell,” she murmured, giving herself magical protection and also a brief light source. Enough to make her realize that the workers had vanished. Frowning, Yuna stretched out a hand and fumbled forward until she bumped into one of the wood-burning stoves that had been going just a second ago. Taking care with her aim, she cast a weak fire spell into it until it crackled to life again. As the light sprang up around her, Yuna realized with some amount of horror that two bowls of steaming ramen were on the counter top in front of her. Next to them was a piece of paper with the same shining red letters that appeared on their VIP badges.
Employees only, Lady Summoner.
Somehow, Yuna was able to eventually compose herself and carry the bowls of ramen back to Bartz. “You know, it just smelled so delicious that I thought I’d get them myself,” she said a bit weakly as she took a seat, her eyes on the cloaked man behind the counter. If his expression had changed, she couldn’t tell.
[attr=class, bulk] After the clinic had closed down for the day, Yuna felt like her house was eerily quiet. Celes had disappeared into her room, and the only overnight patient she had right now was Cloud. Thankfully, he was healthy enough that he didn’t need to be checked on much anymore. Yuna hadn’t been sure that he’d pull through when Caius had brought him with a full stab wound through the abdomen, but he was tough. The blond man would probably be leaving with his friends any day now, and Yuna was incredibly proud of him for his hard work.
Now if only she could sleep.
It was a warm night since Spring weather was starting to creep its way into Provo, and she hadn’t had time to switch her bedding yet from the thick winter quilts. She felt almost too hot to sleep, and after tossing and turning for over an hour, Yuna decided to go to the kitchen for some water before trying again. Maybe she’d finally be able to find a cool spot on her pillow when she came back.
Yuna tried to be as quiet as possible on her way downstairs since she didn’t want to disturb Cloud or Celes. It was on her way back up though that she heard a laugh from the guest bedroom across the way. Yuna wasn’t sure what was funny when presumably Celes was in there alone, but it sounded like she wasn’t the only one awake in the house at least.
Yuna lightly tapped her knuckles on the door to announce her presence. “Celes?” After a moment of hesitation, she tried the doorknob with her glass of water still clutched in the other hand. The guest room was illuminated with pale lamplight, so Celes clearly wasn’t even trying to sleep yet. The blond general was seated in bed with a piece of paper lying next to her, so maybe she’d finally been reading the letter that she’d picked up in town today.
“You couldn’t sleep either?” Yuna asked with a faint smile as she leaned against the door frame. “Would you mind some company then?” They hadn’t had a proper chance to catch up yet after all.
