[attr=class, bulk] It really was a busy time in the clinic right now. Yuna was happy to help someone from Caius’ world of course, but Prompto and the prince were refusing to leave Ignis’ side, so she’d had to set up a few bedrolls for them in the injured man’s room. Thankfully one of the bedrooms upstairs had opened up recently, so she at least had the space for Caius to stay without him having to book a room at a nearby inn. Still, all that meant was that she had a lot of extra guests on top of anyone else coming in to be healed. This was looking like it would be a long night.
Yuna was no stranger to extra hours at least, and this one wasn’t too bad. Ignis was awake and stable, and Monori was making her rounds with the other patients. Yuna was in between tasks at the moment, so she took the chance to boil an extra pot of coffee. She thought some of the others might appreciate that too. The group that had come here straight from Sonora looked absolutely exhausted. They needed sleep, but if they were too busy worrying over Ignis, then caffeine would do for now. The summoner poured herself a cup of the fresh brew and had just finished adding her perfect amount of cream when she heard raised voices coming from one of the rooms nearest the kitchen.
Frowning, Yuna set down her mug on the table and went to investigate, picking up the pace a little when she realized the yelling was coming from Ignis’ room. Now that was just wrong. The man needed rest, not to be shouted at. Yuna started to push open the door, intending to give everyone inside a piece of her mind, but she hesitated and pulled back a little when she realized that it was Caius making a scene. That wasn’t like her friend. Even when things got rough, he was usually a pretty firm rock in the middle of everyone else’s chaos. Had something happened?
Caius yelled something about a prophecy and how Noctis was destined to die, and Yuna was suddenly certain that she shouldn’t be hearing this. She backed away, not entirely sure whether it was kinder to linger or to pretend she hadn’t heard anything. Caius ended up making the decision for her though as he pushed open the door the rest of the way and seemed surprised to find her there. He asked if she needed anything, and she smiled slightly at the nickname. It reminded her of Rikku.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt. I just heard yelling…” Honesty was probably the only way to go at this point when she’d been caught outside the door. Yuna hesitated before choosing her next words, since she’d almost asked if he was okay. It was pretty obvious that he wasn’t though, even without reading his face too closely. “I made coffee,” she settled on instead. “If there’s anything you want to talk about…”
She might end up needing the coffee for far more than just an emotional chat with one of her friends, but Yuna didn’t know that part yet.
[attr=class, bulk] Mu clarified that he hadn’t experienced the killing of the Au Ra himself, but that it was still horrible to think about it. “Thank you for telling me anyway,” she said when he seemed to want to bring the topic to a close. She thought that she could relate in a small way—Yuna hadn’t been raised knowing anything about Al Bhed culture even though it was part of her heritage. Then so many of her distant family had been slaughtered by the Guado on Bikanel Island. It wasn’t something she really liked to talk about much either. Particularly when the Guado had only been there to find her…
Brushing away those thoughts—they were on a beach after all and she was meant to be relaxing—Yuna listened to Mu’s story about the Doma castle flooding. “This was in a war then?” The summoner knew of the concept of course, but there had actually been nothing like that in Spira in a very long time. The Church of Yevon had such an iron grip on the people. Even if they hadn’t, it was hard to do battle with Sin roaming around. The monster would have killed both sides equally. “I’m glad you all got your country back. What did you do with the flooded castle though?” She supposed that it could have been drained and cleaned out eventually, but that might have taken them years to restore. Still, if it was an important building to his people, then maybe it would have been worth it.
Mu switched over to wet sand too when Yuna noticed how the kids nearby were building their sandcastles. He expressed uncertainty over whether his structure really resembled a castle though, and Yuna glanced at both of their work side by side. Eventually she dissolved into laughter as she pressed one hand to her mouth. “I’m sorry! It’s not yours! It’s both of ours. I don’t think this is quite what Enma had in mind,” she said in between giggles as she looked over to see what the spirit thought of their efforts. “I do think you did a little better than I did. If the Church of Yevon was still around, then my temple here might be considered heresy.” It was a joke of course, but the mound really didn’t look anything like Besaid Temple. She may have been a bit too ambitious when she chose a building that was held up by skinny pillars.
[attr=class, bulk] Prompto seemed incredibly grateful that Yuna wasn’t trying to hurt him, which still seemed like an odd reaction as far as she was concerned. Then again, if something similar had happened to Lulu or Rikku, the offender would probably have ended up nursing a Thundara and a punch respectively…
On second thought, maybe the summoner had been a little too nice, but she couldn’t bring herself to yell at anyone over an accident. It was probably best to just put on a professional face and pretend that nothing had happened. If she kept up the act long enough, maybe they’d both forget about it eventually. She could dream at least.
As she opened the door, it became immediately obvious that Prompto was thinking the same thing. He kept his voice upbeat, but she still caught the way that he rubbed furtively at his eyes, and she immediately softened a little. He must have been worried about his friend. In that light, she was glad that she hadn’t given him a hard time or anything. “Both?” That was a slightly odd answer to which variety of tea he wanted, but maybe that was just a sign of how shaken up he was. “I suppose I could mix them. I don’t see why not.” She’d make it work! Lavender chamomile tea sounded lovely now that she thought about it. Maybe it would be extra relaxing. They could both use that.
As they moved into the kitchen, Prompto took a seat at the table while Yuna fished out a kettle. She’d just started spooning tea leaves into the strainer when he asked what she was still doing up so late. “I’d just gotten everything settled for the night,” she admitted, knowing that it was basically a confirmation of how little sleep she normally got. “It’s much better than it used to be now that we have more employees, but things still get pretty hectic around here sometimes.” She hoped that wasn’t offensive given that most of the evening had been spent on his friend’s old wounds, so she hastily added a bit more. “I don’t mind it though. It reminds me a little of what I used to do on Spira.” Helping the people and bringing them hope had always been her goal as a summoner. It was just the church of Yevon that she could do without.
Prompto also apologized once again, and Yuna felt her cheeks heat up as she placed the kettle on the stove. “Let’s maybe not talk about that,” she said with a low chuckle, not quite meeting his eyes until she cleared her throat and changed the subject. “How are you holding up? You and your friends? Caius told me a little about what you all were planning…”
[attr=class, bulk] Mu clarified that the Au Ra actually had no relation to dragons whatsoever, but that it was a common misconception. Yuna pressed a hand to her mouth when she learned that many of his people had been killed for the resemblance. “That’s awful. Especially when it was just a misunderstanding. I’m so sorry to hear that…” People really could be cruel when they were afraid of something.
Once they were seated and getting ready to make sandcastles, Mu explained that there were two castles in his homeworld that he was familiar with. Enma suggested that he try to build Doma Castle, but Yuna had to laugh at the reasoning behind it. “You flooded an entire castle? Now that sounds like a story.” Either way, the ninja agreed that he’d try to model his after Doma Castle since it was the one he was most familiar with. He didn’t seem to have the faintest idea of where to start either though. At least Yuna didn’t have to feel too bad about how shapeless her mound was turning out to be.
“Nothing’s staying up!” She complained with a laugh after trying to add some pillars to her pile of sand and failing miserably. “I feel like I’m doing something wrong.” Sitting back on her hands, Yuna looked over to check on the progress of some kids who were faring much better than the two of them. One of them had a bucket, and as the summoner watched, she noted that the girl was running down to collect some seawater from the ocean before adding in some sand to create some kind of mixture.
“Mu, I think we’re supposed to be using wet sand,” Yuna said with another laugh, scooting closer to the edge of the water so that she could retrieve some of the damp sand that the waves had smoothed down. “I bet it sticks better that way.” With her new materials, the temple definitely progressed a little faster. It was still a misshapen lump, but it was at least resembling a building now, which Yuna considered to be progress. “How’s it coming on your end? I know I definitely have mixed feelings about this place…”
[attr=class, bulk] Caius muttered something about how Yuna and Alex being strangers hadn’t stopped the other blond man from trying to sabotage their business. That was an excellent point that the summoner couldn’t refute, so instead she just gave a slightly tired laugh. “Well, that’s true. I’m trying to take the higher road though.” Being petty felt nice in the short-term, but she didn’t want to escalate any tensions by stooping to his level. She’d try to treat him as a stranger, even if that was hard when she’d heard so many stories.
Caius didn’t seem happy to hear that Celes had continued to run herself ragged, but he didn’t seem particularly surprised either. Still, everything that he accused the blonde woman of doing sounded strangely familiar…“You know, maybe we could all work on taking a break,” Yuna said with a laugh. “I’m glad you hired some more people though. Monori and Lyari have been a big help up here too. Hopefully Celes can rest easier now.”
As they exited the restaurant, Yuna tried one last time to get Caius to stay so he could actually get a good night’s sleep in between traveling to another city. To her surprise, he actually agreed this time, so maybe he really was exhausted. Normally it was hard to get him to slow down. “You’re in luck,” she said in response to his question on if there was a free room. “Dion’s been staying with Terence downstairs, so the room he was using is free upstairs. I’ll put some fresh sheets on the bed, and then you should be good to go.” He also said that he would be preparing a report on the clinic for Celes, which made Yuna try not to smile. That didn’t sound particularly restful, but it was a start. “Sure, I haven’t even given you the tour yet,” she said, starting to head back home with Caius in tow. “I hope you like it.”
It was certainly less in need of help than when Celes had found it.
[attr=class, bulk] The man didn’t look thrilled to still be hanging around, but she supposed that he was waiting for directions to the next shop. Honestly, what had just happened at the blacksmith’s shop was so inconsistent with him not knowing his way around Provo that it forced Yuna to stop and consider him for a moment. How could someone be known on sight and yet act like they had never visited the city center before? Either he rarely ventured into town, which meant he was infamous, or he’d been lying to her all morning and he knew his way around perfectly fine. Both of those options sent a flicker of unease through the summoner that she tried not to show as she sized him up.
For his part, he legitimately rolled his eyes at her when she asked for an explanation, which made Yuna press her lips together. She wasn’t surprised that he’d dodged the question, but he didn’t have to be so rude about it. She thought it was perfectly reasonable to ask after patrons had literally fled rather than remain in a shop with him, but apparently he didn’t think so. Yuna really didn’t mind taking an hour or so to show strangers around, but this was getting a little dicey for her taste. She wasn’t the same person anymore who had gone to confront Maester Seymour alone without telling any of her guardians. She knew she could still be naive, but she at least had limits of what she was willing to walk into alone.
This situation wasn’t one of them. She still didn’t even know his name.
Straightening her back, the summoner clasped her hands in front of her and did her best to give him directions from this point. “There’s a general goods store that I like. It’s where I buy my ethers, but they also have rope and basic hunting supplies. Go back towards Help Wanted Avenue until you’ve passed the last stall, and then you’ll turn right at the chocobo stables. From there it’s a straight shot. ‘Provo Essentials.’ It’s near a monument to the founding fathers, so it’s pretty hard to miss.” Pausing for a moment, Yuna looked up at him again. “I hope you find what you’re looking for.” But this was where they parted ways.
[attr=class, bulk] Mu confirmed that Monori was from a race called the Miqo'te, but Yuna was caught off guard when he then casually mentioned his own horns and tail. She hadn’t noticed them yet, but maybe that wasn’t too much of a surprise when he was so covered up. “Are the Au Ra connected to dragons by any chance?” Those features sounded a bit draconic to her, but they could have had no relation whatsoever on Mu’s world. Yuna herself was half Al-Bhed, which was strongly looked down upon in Spira. Funny how no one seemed to even notice in Zephon though. Maybe having different colored eyes wasn’t so special when some people were walking around with tails.
Mu confirmed that he wasn’t officially a part of the Dragonblades but that he’d helped out Caius on a few jobs before. Yuna brightened when he specifically mentioned the kraken incident. “Oh, you’re one of the people who killed the kraken! Thank you so much for that by the way. I was in the city too, but I stayed back to heal the injured.” As a white mage, she was usually more help behind the scenes unless she was actively summoning. “A lot more people would be dead if you guys hadn’t gone out there…”
He also confirmed that the wyvern’s rest was doing well, and Yuna smiled at the confirmation as she finished up her chocobar. It was delicious, but she wasn’t sure how many of them she could eat with how rich it was. Probably better to just focus on the cocktail for a while. As Yuna sipped her drink, Mu corrected her assumption that Eorzea was a country. It sounded closer to a continent than anything else, and Yuna nodded to show her understanding. “Got it. You two lived pretty far away from each other then even if you’re from the same world.” Then again, it was the same with her and Kimahri. Besaid was quite the distance from his original home on Mt. Gagazet.
Mu asked Enma what he wanted to do next, and the spirit responded without hesitation. Maybe he’d seen some of the kids playing on the beach, and he wanted to get in on the fun. “Sandcastles it is,” Yuna said with a slight laugh, standing up to return her empty glass to the bar. She had promised Enma the next choice after all. “I can’t promise they’ll be very pretty, but we’ll do our best.”
Yuna made sure to take off her shoes before stepping barefoot into the sand—there was nothing worse than sandy boots after all—before claiming a small, empty patch of beach that she and Mu could both use. After settling in on on her knees, Yuna stared a little blankly at the sand for a moment before admitting something. “You know, I think the only castle I’ve ever seen is where the king lives in Torensten.” Structures in Spira tended to not get very big. They had more a risk of being destroyed by Sin otherwise. “Maybe…I’ll try to make the temple where I lived in Spira instead.” She had mixed feelings about her time in the Church of Yevon now, but she had spent years training at the Besaid Temple. Whatever else had happened later, it was still a place that Yuna had once called home. After a moment of planning, she started to gather a lot of sand together to form the central structure. Now the hard part would be the round archways holding it up.
[attr=class, bulk] The man looked irritated at Yuna’s accusation that he may have been a thief, though he predictably didn’t say anything. On her end, the summoner stifled a smile as she turned her attention towards the knives on sale. After being ignored all morning, it was a tiny bit satisfying to have annoyed him. She didn’t love the reputation that he seemed to have gained around Provo though, and she planned to ask him more in earnest once they left the shop. He probably wouldn’t tell her of course, but it was worth a try. Alternatively she could also listen to the local gossip about him, but she wasn’t keen to do that. After being declared a traitor of Yevon, she was quite aware of just how wrong stories could get when they were twisted through the court of public opinion.
He also didn’t answer her question about how his own shopping was going, though he brought everything to the counter which was probably answer enough in itself. The shopkeeper and forgemaster both tried to dissuade him from his particular choice in knife, and Yuna leaned over to look at it with some interest. Particularly when they declared it cursed.“I wonder if Dispel or Esuna would help at all with-...You meant that figuratively, didn’t you? Nevermind. Carry on,” Yuna said with a sigh as she once again faded into the background of the sale. After dedicating her life to being a white mage summoner, maybe it was only natural that she leapt to action upon hearing that something was ‘cursed.’ She could read between the lines of what they’d actually meant though. A lot of people had been killed by that blade, and she watched the man out of the corner of her eye as he finished up his shopping. He didn’t seem particularly concerned about that fact, or that his own life might be in danger. He was starting to be a walking pile of red flags, and someone had to be as blatant as Maester Seymour before she generally took notice of something like that.
After he was finished, he left the store without so much as a backward glance, which was probably a sign to hurry up with her shopping. She looked down at the dagger that she’d been considering again. It promised a fresh start and yet…as heavy as her current one felt sometimes when she remembered what had happened in the Headstone Forest, they had been through a lot together. Maybe she needed more time to really consider what she wanted. Or if she even wanted a new one. “Thank you. These are beautifully done, but I don’t think I’m ready to buy yet today,” Yuna said politely, giving them both a short bow before turning to follow him outside.
“Ma’am!” The shopkeeper called after her, and Yuna turned back to see what she had to say. Was it her imagination, or did she and the forgemaster exchange an uneasy glance over his shoulder as he returned to the hearth? “...Be safe out there,” the woman settled on, and the summoner gave her a small smile in return. This was her best chance to ask what her companion’s deal was, but Yuna wanted to hear it straight from him. Even if that made her naive. “I’ll do my best,” she promised—hopefully not lying—as she finally left through the front door.
The man had actually waited for her. Part of her was surprised, but then again they hadn’t completed everything on his shopping list quite yet. “So…what does that leave? Your hunting supplies?” She remembered snares and rope had been on his mind at least, both of which would probably be in more of a general goods store. Yuna considered the quickest route to one of those as she glanced over at him and his new knife. "Unless you want to tell me what all that was about…”
[attr=class, bulk] The napkins seemed to help at least after Caius choked on his drink. Poor guy—Yuna really hadn’t meant to say something funny right when he was taking a sip—but the damage was done. Thankfully he seemed to take control of his coughing fit eventually, and he chimed in on Yuna’s plan to try to negotiate with Alex. He didn’t seem to have much faith that it would work since he’d already gone that route, and Yuna shot him a slightly sad smile in return. “I know. But I still have to try. I don’t want to go in hostile against someone I’ve never even met.” She at least wanted the chance to resolve this peacefully. The rest was up to Alex.
Caius agreed that it was time to return to the clinic, and Yuna bowed her head in thanks when he paid for the meal as promised. “Thank you for lunch. And for the warning. I really do appreciate you looking out for me.” As she climbed out of the booth, he also asked her a last question about Celes, which made Yuna pause and consider how to answer that. “I don’t think I quite gave her the vacation that she needed,” she admitted rather sheepishly. “She’s doing well, but she seemed like she’s been running herself ragged lately, and then she spent most of her time here helping me with recruiting employees. I feel really bad about that.” It had helped Yuna immensely, but it probably wasn’t the break from her duties that the general had needed. “I hope that next time she visits me she can take it easier.” Honestly, between the three of them, the Dragonblades were not the best when it came to taking breaks. Maybe once all of these issues died down.
As they reached the outside of the restaurant, Yuna turned to face Caius since he’d mentioned that he’d be leaving for Torensten right after lunch. “You’re sure I can’t get you to stay and rest tonight?” She had a feeling that she knew the answer with how worried he was about Lumina and how quickly he wanted to get back to Torensten. It was worth the question though.
[attr=class, bulk] Prompto yelled and immediately put a hand over his face, which told Yuna that he had definitely not been expecting to find her in the bath. She had already covered herself with a towel, so blocking out his eyes really wasn’t necessary, but a part of her appreciated it anyway. Particularly when it became clear that there was no medical emergency and the whole thing was just a misunderstanding. “Oh…” Yuna’s cheeks felt hot, and she was suddenly very interested in the pattern of the bathroom wallpaper as Prompto started talking. And talking. Oh…poor guy, he might have been even more embarrassed than she was.
“Why would I hurt you?” Yuna asked with a frown, finally looking back at him as he finished up his panicked speech. “It…was an accident, wasn’t it?” He had made that abundantly clear at least. Anyway, she was a little concerned about the type of people he was used to since he seemed to expect her to murder him, but now was neither the time nor the place to focus on that. Either way, Yuna seemed to be in loads better shape than Prompto right now, so she let out a slow breath and did her best to take charge of the situation. “Give me a moment to get dressed, and then maybe I can put some tea on? I was still awake too, and that always helps me sleep.” She gave him a half smile—not quite her genuine one but she really was embarrassed—and then she closed the door in his face.
Immediately she put her own hands over her eyes and gave herself some time to feel mortified. Finally she gently clapped her hands over her cheeks and rose up, feeling determined to act normally. Draining the tub, she pulled on the basics of her normal dress while leaving off the jewelry and the flowing sleeves. Those both seemed a bit much for this time of night. Afterward, she pulled open the door and shot him a more normal smile. “Okay! What tea do you like? Chamomile and lavender are both supposed to be pretty good for sleep.” As she spoke, she started making her way across the main room to the kitchen in the back. There was a table in there too, so it was the perfect spot to sit and talk.
