By the time Yuna had finished her introduction, the blond boy’s mood looked like it had taken a completely different turn. He had been so cheerful when he had first run up to her. His blue eyes had sparkled in the sunlight, and the way that he had looked at her had made heat rise in her cheeks almost as much as when he’d nearly hugged her. Now he looked like he’d rather be anywhere else, and Yuna felt a little bad in spite of herself. She should have been nicer when she’d rebuffed him. As a summoner, she was supposed to be someone that everyone could look up to, after all. And yet here was the first person that she’d met in Torensten who recognized her, and she’d already managed to ruin his day.
Feeling a little tongue-tied, she was trying to piece together an apology when he muttered that he was ‘sort of’ from Spira in answer to her earlier question.
“Sort of?” She asked curiously. That kind of answer felt like he was leaving a lot unsaid, and she found herself wanting to know more. “You sound like you must have had an interesting journey.” She gave him a smile, but it faltered slightly when she looked closer at his face. His bright eyes had lowered, and he was looking to the side as if he wanted to leave. She had been wrong in thinking that she had offended him. He looked completely devastated, and she was bewildered as to why.
“I’m sorry,” Yuna murmured, as she looked him over carefully. “Did I…do something wrong? If so, I’d like to make up for it.”
However, just as quickly as the man’s mood had shifted, he seemed to clear away whatever dark thoughts he was having. He shot her a low grin that made something in her stomach flutter as he held out a hand and introduced himself.
“Tidus?” She tried the name out and decided that she liked how it sounded on her tongue. There was a spark of something familiar in it, but she wasn’t sure if she’d actually heard it before or if his name was just unique enough to be memorable. Casting his hand a curious glance, she reached out and grasped it in both of hers. His palms felt lightly calloused, and she wondered if he often used a sword or just worked outdoors. “It’s an honor to meet you, Tidus. I’m so happy to find another person who isn’t from here.”
Yuna released his hand and frowned slightly when he asked how she’d ended up here. “To be honest…I’m not sure. I woke up on the ground a little outside of Torensten last night. I don’t really remember how I got here, or what I would have done to not even be on Spira anymore.” She hesitated slightly, before continuing. If he was from Spira, then he’d understand her suspicions at any rate. "I had thought that…maybe Sin might be involved. But I don’t remember an attack either.” She frowned slightly, her thoughts straying to the monster that it was her life goal’s to defeat when she suddenly flushed and looked back at Tidus, embarrassed that she had been talking for so long.
“What about you?” She clasped her hands together and leaned forward slightly in anticipation. “How did you get here? And where are you from?”
Yuna had been starting to lose hope that she’d be able to find anything familiar at all in Torensten, when a voice suddenly broke over the roar of the crowded marketplace and yelled her name. Startled, she quickly looked up and glanced all around her hoping to find the source. Her eyes leapt from person to person until they suddenly lit on a blond boy who was pushing his way through the crowd towards her. His face was lit up with happiness, and she smiled in spite of herself as she took a step towards him. Maybe this boy was also from Spira? He had recognized her and looked thrilled to see her at any rate, so he must have either known her as a summoner or known who her father was. Even if all he wanted to talk about was how proud she should be to be the High Summoner’s daughter, she was just too relieved to find someone who recognized her to care. Even if it was a stranger, she was more than happy to see what he had to say.
As the boy drew closer to her, he threw his arms out wide, and Yuna stared at him in confusion before her lips parted in shock as she realized that he intended to go for an embrace.
“Oh!” Yuna let out an undignified squeak that would embarrass her later as she quickly stepped to the side to try to avoid him. She also held up her hands between them in an attempt to block the worst of the hug in case he changed course. “Hm…Ah…Well…” She fumbled for the correct thing to say, but words escaped her for a moment as heat flooded her cheeks and she could barely look at him in her embarrassment.
After a few seconds, she finally cleared her throat and reminded herself to be professional. He hadn’t really done anything wrong except to be incredibly forward, after all. But if she could get the conversation on track, then she could still salvage this.
“Yes. I am Yuna, from the island of Besaid.” She gave him a low bow before rising and finally looking him in the eye. There was something familiar about him, though she couldn’t have said what. Yuna immediately liked him even after that incredibly awkward introduction. He had an honest, open face that showed every emotion he was feeling, and his tanned skin suggested that he spent a lot of time outside in the sun. “I’m so happy to meet someone else from Spira,” she confided in him with a slight smile. “You must be too, aren’t you? Or you wouldn’t have known me.”
She studied him for a moment longer before standing up a little straighter. “I’m sorry, I haven’t asked your name.” Yuna apologized before looking at him expectantly.
Once the sun had cleared the tops of the trees in the morning, Yuna continued towards the city after leaving the silver-haired man that she’d met near the abandoned house. It promised to be a long walk, but she’d always known that the pilgrimage ahead of her would be a hard journey. She’d just never expected quite how hard. She was in a strange land with none of her guardians beside her. It was certainly a lonely beginning to her story.
Still, Yuna refused to be in low spirits. She had a destination in mind after all, and Yazoo might have died without her intervention. That alone made her sudden appearance here worth the cost to her. Perhaps the fates had intervened on his behalf, and she’d never begrudge him for that. She wanted to help all of Spira's people in any way she could.
In the meantime, she was certain that she’d be able to find answers in the city. The temple should be able to help her return to Besaid. And perhaps if she prayed to the Fayth there, then they would be able to help her calm whatever was wrong with her mind. Even after a night’s sleep, her head still felt foggy, and whenever she tried to think about what she had been doing right before she’d woken up here, she couldn’t place it. She felt dizzy whenever she thought about it, even though she was certain that she must have been doing something on Besaid. She certainly hadn’t left on her pilgrimage yet at least. Though the harder she thought on that last point, the less certain that she was.
The temple would have answers for her--she was certain of that. Yevon always knew what to do.
However, by the time Yuna was staring up at the sprawling buildings that made up the city, she was no longer sure.
“They’re so tall,” She breathed, putting a hand to her mouth as she spun in a slow circle to look at the one above her. She felt dizzy just looking up at it. How on earth did the people here stand on the top floor without being scared that the whole thing would come tumbling down?
“Get out of the street!,” Someone yelled at her, and she quickly hopped back up on the sidewalk. “Sorry! I’m so sorry!” She called to them as she clasped her hands together in front of her and gave them a short bow, but the person in the strange vehicle had already rushed past her. He must have been in a hurry. Really, everyone around her seemed to be in a hurry as they moved past on the sidewalk. Maybe that was the nature of this city. It reminded her a little of Bevelle.
Hesitantly, Yuna continued her way down the street, following the throng of people until she ended up on a side street surrounded on both sides by market stalls. There was a bigger crowd here, but she felt more comfortable away from the bustle of the main streets. At least here there were people shopping in familiar transactions or just gathering on the corners to talk. It was less overwhelming.
“Excuse me, sir.” Yuna stopped the first man she saw by himself before cupping her hands in a circle and giving him a short bow in the traditional Yevon greeting. “I’m afraid that I'm lost. Could you please show me where your temple is?”
The man gave her an odd look as if she’d done something strange. “Sorry. Torensten doesn’t have one,” was all he said before he continued on past her.
Yuna stared after him, pressing one hand to her mouth in concentration. “No temple?” She murmured quietly. The people shopping in the stalls around her suddenly seemed much too loud.
After a moment, Yuna hesitantly walked further into the marketplace. Even if this city was like Luca and didn't have a temple, there had to be someone here she could learn something from.
The people and the friends that we have lost. Or the dreams that have faded. Never forget them.
Yuna jerked upright, fresh terror coursing through her as she looked around and tried to take in her surroundings. She was lying on the cold dirt, and the way the sun dipped low on the horizon made her press a hand to her mouth in concentration. How had she gotten here? What had she been doing before this? She couldn’t remember, and panic almost blinded her for a moment before she forced herself to calm down and take a slow breath. She would find a way out of this. She just needed to slow down and think about it.
She should have been on Besaid. She was almost sure of it, but her memories seemed hazy somehow. She couldn’t remember any specifics of what she would have been doing to end up lying on the grass. Not to mention that it was too cold here to be her home. There wasn’t any water or a grain of sand in sight either. Clearly this wasn’t Besaid.
Carefully rising to her feet, Yuna took a step back to check herself over for injuries until her boot bumped into something solid. Glancing down, she saw with some relief that her staff was sprawled across the grass next to her. “Praise Yevon,” she murmured as she bent down to retrieve it, but she paused as her fingers touched the familiar shape. Something about that phrase left a bad taste in her mouth, even though she must have said it thousands of times before at the ends of prayers.
“What’s wrong with me?” She murmured, before quickly chiding herself for her moment of weakness. This was no time to break down. Surely she’d be able to find someone who could explain or direct her back home. Collecting herself, she pulled herself to her feet again and set off across the grass towards the setting sun.
Yuna had been walking for a few minutes when she first heard the howls. Pausing, she gripped her staff tighter to herself and cautiously peered forward into the dim lighting. She was used to wild animals on Besaid, and she knew she could handle those if she had to, but she had no idea what kind of fiends might dwell in this strange place. It was best to avoid them if she could. Yuna started to veer towards the right to avoid the direction of the howls, but then the sound of a pained yell echoed towards her. It was unmistakably human.
Without hesitation, Yuna ran towards the sounds now, her heart pounding in her ears as the sounds of a struggle and animal whimpers grew louder. A large, abandoned looking house came into view around a cluster of trees on her right side, but she barely looked at it in her hurry.
Rounding the corner towards the front of the house, Yuna froze, her eyes darting around as she took in the sight of two men. The larger man was groaning and stirring on the ground, while the smaller man had fallen to his knees with one hand pressed to his shoulder. There were no fiends to be seen, but the light of the setting sun glinted off flecks of liquid on the ground. Blood.
Yuna spurred into action. “You’re hurt!” She called as she rushed over to the first of the men. He had long silver hair that almost reached his waist, and as she knelt next to him, she noticed that his green eyes almost seemed to glow in the dim lighting. “I’m a summoner. I can help you.” She quickly explained before reaching out to take his bleeding arm without waiting for permission. Calling her magic to her fingertips, she quickly set about trying to heal the bite wound she found there. The man on the ground was likely in worse shape, but she could at least stabilize this silver-haired man first. “Is there anyone else here? Just you two?” She asked while she worked.

II. PERSONA
Yuna has an extremely caring disposition. She always tries to put others' needs above her own, and she would gladly die in order to save other people. Seeing other people suffer is hard for her, and she has dedicated her life to becoming a summoner so that she can finally bring peace to Spira. She doesn't harbor any resentment towards her father for choosing to die and leave her alone because she sees how happy he was able to make the people of Spira for 10 years. She understands his choice and would gladly do the same.
Yuna has a hard time opening up to people and confiding her inner feelings. She doesn't want to burden other people, and she will often retreat to within herself if the conversation turns to her and her chosen path. She would much rather focus on other people and their problems than her own. Yuna can be very quiet around people she doesn't know very well, but she loves the chance to open up and laugh and have a good time when she can manage it. She secretly loves the freedom of doing what she wants even when it shocks other people, but she would never admit that or indulge in it very often.
Yuna is very loyal to her friends, and she will always choose to help them even when society looks down on her for it. She doesn't care that she's viewed as weak for having so many guardians. She doesn't care that people stared at her and Tidus when she helped him feel better by laughing out loud with him. She refuses to have Yunalesca turn any of her guardians into her final summon because she can't imagine having any of the others die for her even though she was fully prepared to die for them.
Overall, Yuna is a driven, kind woman who wants to do whatever is necessary to spare her world and its people. Even when her whole religion and worldview is exposed to be a lie, she continues on with only a brief moment of hesitation because it was never about Yevon or his teachings for her. She wants to help people for their sakes, and it doesn't matter to her if the whole world is against her. She'll still always choose to save them.
III. HISTORY
Yuna was born in Bevelle--the largest city in Spira. Her father was a priest who served at the Bevelle temple, and her mother was an Al Bhed woman whose brother Cid was the current leader of the Al Bhed. Her parent's marriage was controversial due to discrimination against the Al Bhed, and Yuna was heavily sheltered as a result.
When Yuna was four years old, her mother was killed by Sin while she was attempting to visit her family on Bikanel Island, and her father Braska was devastated as a result. Braska spent the next few years training to become a summoner so that he could defeat Sin and bring a period of calm to the world. When Yuna was seven, he finally managed to become a summoner, and he left his daughter in the care of the temple as he set off on a pilgrimage with his two guardians.
When Yuna first heard that her father had defeated Sin, she was so happy. The people were all crying and celebrating in the streets for her dad. Finally, everyone seemed to love him as much as she did. But as the hours passed, the cost of Sin's defeat finally hit her. Her dad was never coming home.
Yuna cried for a long time, but then she got a visitor--a small Ronso who had come to Bevelle all the way from Mount Gagazet. He introduced himself as Kimahri and said that it had been the last wish of a dying man that he take her to the island of Besaid. Yuna cried harder at that. It was the final confirmation that her dad truly was dead. Kimahri seemed a little uncomfortable, but he comforted her the best that he could all the way to Besaid. When they finally arrived, he tried to leave her in the care of the temple, but Yuna clung to his leg and begged him not to leave her. He was the only familiar thing to her on the island. And to her surprise, Kimahri did stay. He took a room close to the temple and did odd jobs around the island. He came to see her at the temple every day.
At first, Yuna was withdrawn from everyone except Kimahri. It seemed like everyone on the island wanted to talk to her, and they called her the High Summoner's daughter. She didn't want her dad to be the High Summoner. Not if it meant she couldn't see him anymore. But eventually, Yuna started venturing out of her room, and she quickly made friends with three older kids--Lulu, Wakka, and Chappu. Lulu was a black mage studying at the temple to become a guardian for summoners, while Wakka and Chappu were brothers who aspired to be Blitzball players.
As the years passed, Yuna was happy with her life on Besaid, and she grew proud of her dad for bringing the Calm to Spira. However, she knew that the Calm wasn't going to last. Sin would eventually come back, and life would go back to how it was before. Yuna dwelled on that, and when she was 14, she announced that she was going to enter training at the temple to become a summoner. Lulu, Wakka, and Chappu tried to talk her out of it, but Kimahri instantly offered to become her guardian. Yuna accepted and started her training at the temple. Her resolve only grew when Sin was finally reborn and her friend Chappu was killed.
Lulu and Wakka were both working as guardians at this point, and shortly before Yuna was due to start her trial, their summoner gave up his pilgrimage. At this point, they both returned to Besaid and offered their services to Yuna. She gladly accepted both of them as her guardians.
Finally, Yuna undertook her first cloister of trials to prove that she was worthy of being a summoner. The trial was hard on her--she spent over 24 hours praying to the Fayth before Valefor was finally bestowed on her and she emerged victorious as a full-fledged summoner. However, she also emerged from the temple to find a controversy going around Besaid. A stranger had come to the island--a boy her age--and he had completely ignored the precepts about who was allowed to enter the cloister of trials. He had heard that she had been inside for more than a day, and he had burst inside to try to save her life, no matter the cost.
Unlike the other priests, Yuna fully respected him for his decision. She thought that he must be incredibly brave to try to save someone's life even if other people hated him for it. There was something familiar about the boy, and after she learned that he claimed to be from Zanarkand and to be Sir Jecht's son, she was anxious to speak to him again.
During their travels, Yuna grew very close to Tidus. He was everything that she wished she could be--loud, confident, brazen, and optimistic. He always encouraged her to do the things that she wanted to do, purely because she wanted to do them. He didn't seem to think there needed to be a reason to indulge herself or to put herself first sometimes. Yuna was happy that he'd joined them and become her newest guardian. Tidus brought cheer and laughter to their group. He didn't care about the traditions that she'd been taught her entire life. Eventually, Yuna fell in love with him, though she kept it to herself.
As her pilgrimage continued, Yuna grew to learn that her religion was not what it seemed. They were introduced to one of the four Maesters of Yevon--Seymour. He was a half Guado man that she quickly connected to. He could understand the hardships of growing up as a half human just like she could, after all. However, she was blind-sided when he suddenly asked her to marry him. He claimed it was to bring a brief moment of happiness to the people of Spira, but she was uneasy as to what his true motives were. She decided to turn him down, but then she found a sphere that Seymour's father had made shortly before his death. As it turned out, Seymour had murdered him and taken his position as Maester of Yevon.
Yuna was horrified, but she still wondered if she could save Seymour. Surely he was a good man deep down. Perhaps she could persuade him to turn himself in if she agreed to his terms of marriage. Without telling her guardians her reasoning, Yuna agreed to Seymour's terms and confronted him with what she knew. He was quiet at her accusations and said that they could discuss after she'd gotten her new summon from Macalania Temple. Yuna reluctantly agreed, but her guardians burst in before she was finished. They had seen Jyscal's spehere and knew that Seymour was a murderer. Seymour threatened her guardians and summoned a powerful aeon to attack them. Yuna stepped in to protect them, and they were forced to kill Seymour in self-defense.
Branded traitors because they had killed a Maester of Yevon, Yuna and her guardians fled Macalania Temple without being able to either send Seymour or clear their names. Because he was an unsent, Seymour quickly returned from the dead and sent out a few Guado to capture Yuna. She was brought to Bevelle where he told her that he would forgive her crimes against him if she went through with their marriage. Secretly waiting for a chance to send him, Yuna agreed, and their wedding ceremony began.
However, her guardians infiltrated in the middle of the wedding. Despite their best efforts, they were immediately captured and held at gunpoint. Yuna was threatened with their lives, so she reluctantly finished the ceremony and married Seymour. However, Seymour ordered her friends' deaths anyway, so Yuna leapt off the balcony to cause a distraction so that her guardians could escape. They were all eventually recaptured, but Yuna at least managed to get the next aeon from the Bevelle Temple first.
On trial, Yuna learned some hard truths about Yevon. Grand Maester Mika was also an unsent, and he refused to help them or allow her to send Seymour. He ordered their deaths by the Via Purifico instead. Thankfully, they managed to escape after defeating Seymour a second time, but Yuna's confidence in herself and Yevon was shaken. She was no longer sure that she should continue on, and she confessed her doubts and fears to Tidus. He tried to cheer her up, and they finally acknowledged their feelings for each other with a kiss.
Feeling reassured after her conversation with Tidus, Yuna decided to continue her pilgrimage. However, when they finally reached Zanarkand, her entire worldview was shaken by Yunalesca who greeted them in the temple. Sin--she had always been taught--would go away when humanity had repented for its sins. However, Yunalesca was dismissive of this point. Humanity would never reach that level of purity, she claimed. Sin was eternal. Not only that, but there was no true final summon. Yuna would have to choose one of her guardians who would sacrifice their life to be her final summon.
Yuna was left reeling after both of these pieces of information. No--she told Yunalesca. She wouldn't choose. She would have gladly died for Spira for the chance to save everyone, but she wouldn't if there was no hope. And she would never let one of her guardians die for her.
Dismissive of their points, Yunalesca attacked them, but they were able to defeat her. As she faded away, the enormity of their actions hit them. There was no longer any way to obtain a final summon. Unless they devised another method of defeating Sin, then Sin would be around forever.
Auron told them to consider what they knew--that Sin was Jecht. Tidus brought up that his dad had always loved the Hymn of the Fayth. It never failed to calm Jecht down. Armed with that knowledge, they blared the Hymn of the Fayth from the speakers of their airship while requesting that everyone on land who could hear the hymn join in. Sure enough, Sin showed up to listen to the Hymn, and they managed to blast a hole in his body and climb inside while he was relatively calm.
Finally, they were able to confront Jecht from inside Sin. Jecht warned them that he wouldn't be able to stop himself and that they shouldn't hold back before transforming and attacking them. They were able to defeat Jecht, and he and Tidus had an emotional moment before he passed away.
Angry, Yevon attempted to create a new Sin by possessing each of Yuna's aeons in turn. Crushed, Yuna was forced to summon each one of her aeons that had helped them along the way and kill them before Yevon could complete their transformation into Sin. Finally, Yevon had nothing to hide behind, and they were able to confront him directly. Yuna no longer had her aeons to help her, but she still had her guardians, and together they were able to kill Yevon and release the grip that he'd had on Spira for over 1,000 years.
Yuna knew she had one last job to do, and she performed a final sending to release Sin and all of the aeons into the afterlife. However, to her shock, she saw that Tidus was also fading away. He told her that he had to leave, and in a blind panic, she tried to chase after him, only to fall right through him. She confessed that she loved him, and Tidus wrapped his arms around her one last time before joining his father in the afterlife.
Yuna was heartbroken at all the loss they had faced in order to secure their victory, but she vowed that she wouldn't let herself break down. She would help lead Spira into the next chapter of its history. Sin was gone. That was worth celebrating. In the meantime, she would be someone that Tidus and her father could both be proud of before she saw them again.
