[attr=class, bulk] Caius said that she could call on him and Celes if she ever needed anything involving the clinic, which made her smile at him over her lunch. “Thank you, Caius. You know the same always goes for you both too.” The two blonds usually had their hands full, so Yuna was happy to pay a visit down to Torensten whenever they needed her. Particularly now that she wasn’t the only thing keeping the clinic afloat. The place could definitely get by for a few days without her.
Her friend also thanked her for telling him about Tidus, which made Yuna dip her head slightly. “I should talk about him more. I want to keep his memory alive. It can just be hard. Particularly when no one on Zephon knows about him…” Everyone on Spira had known why they should honor Tidus. He was a guardian of renown who had helped bring about the eternal Calm. His legend would be passed down for centuries. Here, he had never existed. It was like he really had just been a dream, and that was hard to accept.
Caius also teased her that he wasn’t that much older than her, which made Yuna laugh. “Just a few years. But that does still make you the older brother, you know.” Back on Spira, Lulu and Wakka had always treated her like a little sister, but they were a bit too protective about it. They’d tried to stop her from becoming an apprentice summoner for a long time. She had a feeling Caius would have been more along the lines of Kimahri. Just quietly supportive of her goals, which she appreciated.
Yuna started to eat when Caius did, and she was also surprised by how hungry she turned out to be. Their conversation had gone to some places that were emotionally exhausting for both of them, so her food was half gone in just a few bites.
Caius also asked her for a favor, and Yuna nodded seriously when he said three or four injured men might be stopping by, one of which was a younger version of his king. That should have sounded strange to her, but she knew how Zephon could be with time and when it took people from. “Of course, I’ll look after them if they need it,” she reassured him. “I assume this has something to do with what you were getting up to in Sonora?” The description of one of the boys also caught her attention, though she hesitated before asking. “The blond one with the chocobo hair—do you mean Prompto? The boy from Eos that I sent to you?”
They had been paired together for a dating event once, and Yuna thought it had gone pretty well. She’d even given Prompto her address, but she’d never seen him again after she’d realized he was from the same world as Caius and had given him that lead. Maybe he’d been busy, or maybe he wasn’t interested anymore. She wasn’t offended since they’d only gone on one date, but it was bound to be just a touch awkward. Yuna would do her best to be a professional though.
[attr=class, bulk] Caius shared a really heart-felt view of what she’d been doing here in Provo, which made Yuna smile over at him a little sheepishly. “Thank you, Caius. It was definitely rough going at first, and it still has bad days. But now that it’s growing and other people are involved…I’m really seeing what the place could be. I hope we can keep it going for a while.” She wasn’t too surprised that the kingsglaive wished he could do more peacekeeping jobs like that full-time. For as fierce of a fighter as he was, he’d always seemed like a fairly gentle soul.
Two years down the line, and it was still hard for Yuna to talk about her blond guardian. She was glad that Caius seemed to get the gist of what she was trying to say though, and after a pause, he confirmed that he would talk to Lumina while there was still time. “I’m glad. I hope she is too,” she said with a slightly sad smile that turned fonder when he asked for the boy’s name that she’d mentioned. “Tidus.”
It was the first time that she’d said his name aloud in a long time, and Yuna glanced down at her untouched lunch as she thought of his brash personality and cheerful grin. “He was one of my guardians, though using a sword was new to him. He was one of the best blitzball players I’d ever seen, and he could hold his breath underwater like it was nothing.” Despite putting off talking about him, she was having a hard time stopping now that she’d started. “He said anything that was on his mind, even when it shocked people. I’d never met anyone like that before. And at the end…when he knew what would happen to him if we killed Yevon…he didn’t tell me. So I wouldn’t hesitate.” Yuna gripped her hands together in her lap and tried to compose herself, but it was hard when she could still picture him teaching her how to whistle or talking about their future together in Zanarkand. They’d both known it would never happen, but it had still been nice to hear.
By comparison, Alex was a much safer topic, and Yuna nodded when Caius approved of her plan to take someone with her when she went to negotiate with the other guild leader. She wasn’t expecting him to call her family though, and that was enough to startle her out of her brooding about Tidus. “Caius…” She really was going to cry if they kept these kinds of topics up. Rubbing at one eye, she smiled up at him. “I feel the same way. I don’t have any siblings, but…I’d like to think an older brother would be something like you.”
Glancing down at her uneaten sandwich again, Yuna let out a small laugh. “We better eat before I cry all over this food.”
[attr=class, bulk] The white-haired man seemed understanding of Yuna’s brief moment of panic about the beach, and he shared that he had a hard time relaxing by conventional means too. He also introduced himself as Mu and confirmed that the little creature he was with was called Enma. “It’s nice to meet you both,” she said with a slight bow of her head before smiling over at him. “I’m going to guess that you aren’t from Zephon originally either?” It would explain his companion, and also why he had trouble letting his guard down. Maybe his life had been a lot different before this. Yuna’s certainly had been too.
Mu said that he didn’t really have any plans for the beach either and admitted that he’d only come along because Enma had really wanted to see the ocean. His friend apparently had no idea what to do now that he was there though, which made Mu look like he wanted to strangle him. Yuna laughed behind her hand at their brief squabble. She still wasn’t sure what Enma was, but he definitely had spirit. She could also tell how close the two of them were, even if Mu seemed a bit long-suffering about it.
The armored man extended an offer for the three of them to wing this vacation together, which surprised Yuna since she hadn’t made a great first impression by nearly bowling them over. She was ultimately relieved though. She didn’t really know whether or not anyone else she knew had boarded the cruise, so spending time with these two almost-strangers sounded nice. And maybe being with other people would distract her from thoughts of home more than wandering the sand alone would do.
“I’d like that. Maybe we can figure out how to relax together,” she said with a slight laugh as she scanned their surroundings. Seeing as how Yuna had grown up on an island, she should probably have had a better idea of where to start, but she had honestly spent far more time training in the temple than out in the ocean. She did her best to try to remember what visitors to Besaid had done in their spare time though.
“I think we need to start with a fruity drink or ice cream. That’s what tourists do,” Yuna said decisively before suddenly remembering that her companions were a man with his face covered and a small creature. “At least, if that’s something you two want to do!” She hadn’t really considered the logistics before suggesting it. Did Mu remove his face mask around other people when he was eating? Maybe he only ate when he was alone? Or perhaps he’d just turn away and then replace it? Yuna had no idea how to ask his drinking methods in a polite way, so she just danced around the issue.
[attr=class, bulk] The man once again squinted between her and the pamphlet like he was forming opinions on both. Whatever his thoughts were though, he chose to keep them to himself. He didn’t seem particularly inclined to give her his name either. In fact, he bodily turned away from her when she trailed off as a question. He was facing the market square, so Yuna could imagine that he was preparing to go about his day. That was fine though—he’d at least been nice enough to let her say her piece first. From their interaction so far, she was honestly expecting him to leave without another word, so she was a little surprised when he suddenly made her an offer instead.
This was the sort of thing that probably would have set off alarm bells for her guardians back on Spira. Going off alone with someone who hadn’t even introduced themselves certainly wasn’t the smartest move, but Yuna had grown up aspiring to become a high summoner. Her sense of self-preservation was low while her desire to help others was high. That meant that there was really only one answer she could give, though she did offer him a slightly reproachful look at the comment he made about how busy she was.
“You could be a little nicer when you’re asking for help, but you’re right. We do a lot better by word of mouth,” she admitted, setting down her papers and coming around to stand next to him. “I’d be happy to show you around the market though. You must be new to Provo.” Considering how tight-lipped he’d been so far, maybe she shouldn’t have said that thought out loud. He probably wouldn’t be happy that she’d learned a single fact about him. Yuna wondered if he was an offworlder like she was. That would explain why he was a bit eccentric. It must have been a quiet place he was from.
“What were you looking to buy? Basic necessities like groceries tend to be closer to the center,” she explained, gesturing to where the bulk of the crowd was gathered.
[attr=class, bulk] When Yuna stepped aside, she had intended to give Dion a moment with his friend who had just regained consciousness before she returned to dealing with his wounds. And what a moment it was. With the first words out of their lips, the summoner was taken aback by how raw and desperate their affection was. They almost spoke as if they were lovers who hadn’t seen each other in years, but Yuna quelled that thought with a blush. Perhaps they were just being emotionally vulnerable and were extremely comfortable with each other. In fact, it was refreshing to see this kind of male friendship! She shouldn’t make assumptions just because-
Oh. Oh they were kissing. Nevermind.
Out of everything that she’d seen while operating the clinic so far, Yuna was not equipped to deal with this. Her face felt as if it was the approximate color of a tomato, and she wondered if she should say something or just tactfully slip out of the room and give them a few minutes. The decision was made for her when Terence’s injuries caught up with him though, and he broke everything off with a wince. That seemed to make Dion remember himself as he apologized for not taking his wounds more into account. He then stared at Yuna looking mortified as if he’d only just realized she was still there. Well. This wasn’t the most awkward introduction she’d ever had, but it was certainly close.
“Is that…the word for it on Valisthea?” She asked curiously as he introduced the injured man as his knight. She then clasped her hands together and gave Terence a respectful bow. “It’s an honor to meet you, Sir Terence. Please, don’t strain yourself. I’m just so glad that you’ve regained consciousness. I can already tell you mean the world to Dion.” And perhaps even more than the world. She’d never seen a couple before that made her ache with Tidus’ loss quite so much. These two had something extraordinarily special.
No one had called her ‘Lady Yuna’ as Terence had in a very long time. Maybe not since she’d left Spira and woken up on Zephon, so the familiar title had her smiling more genuinely at Dion and the injured man. In cases as serious as Terence, she normally wanted to work alone so she could focus, but she had a feeling these two would absolutely refuse to be separated. She couldn’t even bring herself to ask, so instead she brought over a chair and offered it to Dion. “You can stay at his side if you promise to both sleep tonight.” And preferably not with both of them in Terence’s sick bed, but that may have been asking too much from what Yuna had seen thus far. Well as long as they both rested, she supposed it didn’t really matter if they were cramped.
With Dion set up at his bedside, Yuna took up residence across from him and started back on healing Terence. “Cura,” she murmured with an outstretched hand as she let her magic wash over him. She mostly left the other two to speak, but she was startled into asking questions herself at the revelation of exactly what had happened to him. “You were attacked…here? In Provo?”
[attr=class, bulk] Caius admitted that Yuna wasn’t entirely off the mark with what she’d assumed about him and the girl that he’d mentioned, and the summoner brightened at the admission. “You’ve come a long way since the last time we talked about something like this, you know,” she said with a slight smile. He hadn’t seemed sure of what he’d wanted then, or even if a relationship was something he’d ever want. This new girl must have been really special to have changed his outlook so much
Caius didn’t seem entirely comfortable when Yuna tried to comfort him, so she pulled her hand back from his fairly quickly. She didn’t take it personally since she knew he wasn’t as physically affectionate with his friends as she was. Instead she just smiled and looked off to the side when he praised her for everything she’d done with the clinic. “I couldn’t have done it alone. I appreciate everything you and Celes did to help set it up.” At this point they mostly made enough to keep up with operations, but she never would have had the money upfront for a suitable property without their help. Not to mention everything that Celes had done to help with recruiting.
The blond man once again seemed frustrated at his own helplessness in the face of the parasite, but Yuna just shook her head. “No one can fix everything themselves, Caius. But you don’t have to. You’ve got a pretty big network here on Zephon, you know. And I’m sure she just appreciates how hard you’re trying to help her.”
He did seem to cheer up a little as he told her the story of how they’d met, and Yuna had to laugh a little when she learned that the two of them were set up by Lumina’s sister. “Well, at least you already have her family’s support then,” she teased, though she grew more solemn when he said that he wanted to tell Lumina how he felt while there was still time. “I think you should,” she said more seriously as she folded her hands in her lap. “I…don’t talk about him much, but there was a boy back on Spira. I only told him how I felt right before the end. I wish I had sooner.” She paused before brushing a strand of her hair behind one ear and looking up at Caius. “I don’t think you’ll regret speaking to her honestly. But you might if you don’t.” It had taken her a long time to come to terms with losing Tidus. Yuna didn’t want the same thing to happen to Caius.
The talk eventually came back around to Alex and the Rising Stones, which was the point of him coming to warn her in the first place. Her friend clearly had a lot on his plate right now though, so Yuna was happy to listen if he needed to get some of it off his chest. “Thank you. I do think I’ll go meet with Alex soon, but I won’t go alone. I promise.” If anything could have cured her of trying to solve problems on her own, it was everything that had happened with Maester Seymour.
[attr=class, bulk] As Yuna stopped to apologize to the stranger, she had to smile a little when she saw that he was still in his full armor. He must have been a little hot on the beach, but since it was approaching sunset, maybe it would cool down enough to be manageable for him. She thought she understood why someone might not want to change out of their normal clothes though. He must have seen a lot of combat in his life and wanted to be ready for anything. With that outlook, Yuna was starting to regret not bringing her staff afterall.
To her surprise, the first person to speak to her wasn’t the masked man, but a little red creature over his shoulder. “Oh!” Yuna jumped in surprise when he popped up before quickly apologizing. “I’m sorry, I’ve never seen anyone like you before. You’re right though.” She stood on her tiptoes in the sand to get a better look at him, hoping that she wasn’t coming off as rude as the man apologized for the comments his companion had made. “No, it’s alright. We did just arrive. I think I might just be bad at relaxing,” she admitted as she looked down at the beach again. She wasn’t entirely sure what to do without a clear task or a crisis to avert, which meant that she was probably missing the point of the beautiful scenery.
“I’m Yuna by the way,” she introduced herself since he was nice enough to stop and talk to her after she’d nearly bowled him over. “And you called him Enma, right?” She wanted to know his name too of course, but she really was curious about his small companion and what exactly he was. She hadn’t seen anything like him on either Spira or on Zephon so far.
“Anything you were planning on doing while you were here? I’m sort of just winging this whole trip,” Yuna admitted, wondering if he’d won his way in at the last minute like she had. That would explain the armor.
[attr=class, bulk] Caius said that it wasn’t her fault that she didn’t know if Shiva was an egi or not, and that he wished Alex would have just let him investigate alone first. “He was considered a hero in his world?” Yuna asked, tilting her head at that new piece of information. She didn’t know a lot about Alex, so it was good to absorb what she could. “I guess that’s why he’s dealt with things like this before…” Perhaps summons had threatened his old world, and that was why Alex was having such a knee-jerk reaction to Shiva. It still didn’t excuse threatening her and Caius, but it would explain it at least.
When Caius had first said that Alex had taunted him over one of his friends, Yuna had been sure that meant his group had run into trouble up in Sonora. Apparently he was actually referring to a girl that the summoner had yet to meet though, and Yuna looked at him in surprise as Caius admitted that she was special to him. “Wait, you two are-…Really? I had no idea. I mean, I’m happy for you of course!” Yuna flushed a bit, hoping that last part didn’t sound too tacked on. She was just genuinely caught off-guard. It had been quite a long time since she and Caius had seen each other though. If she could start a whole new career in Provo, then he had the time to start a new relationship.
Yuna quickly looked more serious though when Caius explained that his girlfriend was in trouble. She apparently had an even more dangerous version of the plague that Ardyn had spread around Provo for a time, and the summoner winced as she remembered watching a man turn into a daemon in front of her. Ardyn had just sat back to watch as he’d set it upon her…
Before she could really say anything to that horrible news, the waiter came back to take their orders, and Yuna hurriedly looked down at her forgotten menu. Thankfully she’d been here before, so she was able to quickly order a sandwich that she remembered liking. After he’d walked away again, Caius seemed to fall into a bit of despair. Yuna couldn’t say that she blamed him. He seemed to really like this woman, and to be unable to do much for her as she slowly got worse must have been awful. Yuna couldn’t imagine the feeling of losing someone over time. She’d lost Tidus so abruptly, since even up until the end, he’d never told her that he would fade away once Sin was defeated. She’d never quite forgiven him for that, but then, maybe she wouldn’t have been able to fight so hard if she’d known what would happen.
“Caius…” Wanting to comfort him, Yuna reached across the table and put her hand over his. “You can’t blame yourself for not being born in a certain family. It sounds like you’re doing more for her than anyone else could. You’re one of the strongest people I know. In combat and out of it.” He also seemed to feel bitter about having to rely on King Noctis to do the full job for him, and Yuna smiled a little sadly at that part as she took her hand back. “I know that must be frustrating, but you’ve done plenty without him. And if he’s as good a man as you’ve made him out to be, then I’m sure he doesn’t mind helping.”
Yuna didn’t know if that would help him feel better or not, but she hoped that he and his king together would be able to cure the blight. “And when she’s better, I fully demand to meet her,” Yuna added with a slight smile. Any woman who could make Caius confess was probably pretty special. Or just incredibly up-front about what she wanted. Yuna adored her friend of course, but he could be a tad dense about this sort of thing unless it was waving a red flag in his face.
Caius finished up by saying that they might end up at war with the Rising Stones, which made her earlier smile fade. “I’m sorry. I don’t want that to happen because of me. That’s why I’d like to talk this out if possible, but I do know that some things are always destined to end in a fight…”
On that dour note, their food was delivered to the table. Yuna was suddenly feeling a bit less hungry though.
[attr=class, bulk] The stranger had the air of someone who thought before they spoke and then said little. It honestly reminded her a little of Kimahri, and Yuna tried her best not to smile at the thought. That would have seemed odd to the man, and she didn’t want to put him off. Mentally comparing him to her quietest guardian did at least help to keep her spirits up though. Even if he currently looked like he’d rather the ground swallow him whole than continue this conversation.
He did at least take the pamphlet she offered him, which Yuna counted as a success. His face gave nothing away as he glanced down at it, but his eyes squinted slightly as if he didn’t quite like something that he’d seen. If that was the case, then he said nothing about it and only commented that he would think about coming when he needed it. That polite but dismissive comment finally made Yuna laugh a little more genuinely.
“Well please don’t think about it too hard if you’re in that position. Time is usually of the essence,” she lightly teased before adding on information about their pricing. “Also I never want cost to be a barrier to treatment, so no need to worry about that either.” While that was certainly true—Yuna healed for free more than she didn’t—she was suddenly worried that it came off like she was implying that he looked like he didn’t have any money. She really did need to work on her recruiting skills. Being a high summoner did not guarantee being good at selling something apparently, but maybe that was to be expected when she’d been raised in a quiet temple.
“Anyway, I’m sorry if I kept you from your shopping, Sir…?” Yuna trailed off, realizing that he’d never given his name. Hopefully that wasn’t intentional, but if he ignored the pointed question then she’d try not to be too disappointed.
[attr=class, bulk] Yuna hadn’t really been sure what to make of the cruise invitation when it had first arrived in the mail. Apparently it was a gift from one of her clients as a thank you. He had been chosen to attend the test voyage of the Choco Cruise Line, and he’d thought that she might like it instead. Yuna had initially intended to turn it down since she didn’t like to leave the Clinic for long stretches of time, but she’d eventually decided that maybe she really could use a vacation. She was no good to anybody if she was too exhausted to care for anyone.
The actual boat voyage passed without much incident. It really was nice to get away from everything for a little while, even if she couldn’t help but feel guilty for spending so much time just laying around. Yuna had most been looking forward to the island itself though, so when they finally made port, she made sure to dress for the beach in a white swimsuit top and long blue skirt. For once she didn’t even plan to bring her staff along, so hopefully nothing too dire happened. She could use magic without it of course, but the weapon definitely helped to focus her spells and enhance their strength.
When Yuna finally stepped out onto the sand, it was approaching sunset, and she wasn’t prepared for the immediate wave of nostalgia and homesickness it caused. The view looked so much like Besaid that it was honestly hard to look at. This area of the beach had been set up with blankets and several bars and ice cream stands. Everything looked lovely, but Yuna suddenly wasn’t sure if she was up for this. Turning away to flee the beach, she nearly ran straight into a white-haired man who had most of his face covered.
“Oh! I’m sorry.” Yuna stopped to give the stranger a weak smile before she spread an arm out at their surroundings. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it? It just might be a little…too nice for me. If that makes sense.”
