Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius very badly needed to lie down.
He had expected that his lineage would come up during some visit or other with Ignis. It was inevitable considering all that had happened. After dealing with everything that had happened with Noctis, Caius had visited Ignis only to be led to another startling revelation: The gods of Eos had intended for Noctis to die as well. Caius' already crossed boundaries had been pushed even further, and he had begun to find that he actually detested the deities that had governed Eos for millenia, and the prophecy that he himself had for years championed. His hatred was starting to extend to his ancestors in the Lucian line too, all those stuffy ring ghosts who refused to help them fight the starscourge in full just because of some stupid prophecy and pure blood supremacy or some shit. Who gives a damn about that, really? There was a starscourge that needed to be fought and there were two Lucis Caelum here to fight it. But adherence to their stupid biases and stupid prophecy won out in the end. All while being fully aware of, and in-on, that this prophecy would end in Noctis' death just as much as it did Caius and his family. A revelation that had shattered Caius' heart into pieces.
How did he cope with that? How did he even begin to process all that he had seen just in the last 24 hours? He had left Ignis to sleep for now, the conversation had been exhausting for the both of them. But as he turned to the door, Caius squinted as he noted that it wasn’t closed fully. Apparently in the heat of the moment, he had not heard the door opening. While it could have been a coincidence, Caius wasn’t the kind of man that left anything to chance. His expression turned cold and fierce as the Kingsglaive brought one hand behind his back in preparation to summon a weapon, and the other slowly pushed the door open with as few footsteps and as little noise as possible. Perhaps hoping to catch an assailant by surprise.
However, on the other side of the door was a familiar face. Caius blinked a few times in surprise as he recognized the woman in front of him. How long had she been there? She did run the clinic, so of course she had the run of the place, but…
“Yuney? Did you need something?”

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
[attr=class, bulk] It really was a busy time in the clinic right now. Yuna was happy to help someone from Caius’ world of course, but Prompto and the prince were refusing to leave Ignis’ side, so she’d had to set up a few bedrolls for them in the injured man’s room. Thankfully one of the bedrooms upstairs had opened up recently, so she at least had the space for Caius to stay without him having to book a room at a nearby inn. Still, all that meant was that she had a lot of extra guests on top of anyone else coming in to be healed. This was looking like it would be a long night.
Yuna was no stranger to extra hours at least, and this one wasn’t too bad. Ignis was awake and stable, and Monori was making her rounds with the other patients. Yuna was in between tasks at the moment, so she took the chance to boil an extra pot of coffee. She thought some of the others might appreciate that too. The group that had come here straight from Sonora looked absolutely exhausted. They needed sleep, but if they were too busy worrying over Ignis, then caffeine would do for now. The summoner poured herself a cup of the fresh brew and had just finished adding her perfect amount of cream when she heard raised voices coming from one of the rooms nearest the kitchen.
Frowning, Yuna set down her mug on the table and went to investigate, picking up the pace a little when she realized the yelling was coming from Ignis’ room. Now that was just wrong. The man needed rest, not to be shouted at. Yuna started to push open the door, intending to give everyone inside a piece of her mind, but she hesitated and pulled back a little when she realized that it was Caius making a scene. That wasn’t like her friend. Even when things got rough, he was usually a pretty firm rock in the middle of everyone else’s chaos. Had something happened?
Caius yelled something about a prophecy and how Noctis was destined to die, and Yuna was suddenly certain that she shouldn’t be hearing this. She backed away, not entirely sure whether it was kinder to linger or to pretend she hadn’t heard anything. Caius ended up making the decision for her though as he pushed open the door the rest of the way and seemed surprised to find her there. He asked if she needed anything, and she smiled slightly at the nickname. It reminded her of Rikku.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt. I just heard yelling…” Honesty was probably the only way to go at this point when she’d been caught outside the door. Yuna hesitated before choosing her next words, since she’d almost asked if he was okay. It was pretty obvious that he wasn’t though, even without reading his face too closely. “I made coffee,” she settled on instead. “If there’s anything you want to talk about…”
She might end up needing the coffee for far more than just an emotional chat with one of her friends, but Yuna didn’t know that part yet.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius was still taken aback by Yuna’s appearance. He knew why she was here, he had made a scene and this was her clinic. Of course she would have come to investigate, it made sense. Even if he wished that she hadn’t. He couldn’t believe he had let himself get carried away and cause things to get to this point.
The Kingsglaive quickly wiped his red and puffy eyes with his sleeve to be rid of any remaining evidence. Those hadn’t been tears of bittersweet acceptance of an unrequited love, nor the tears of a happy man who had found belonging. No, these had been shed from agony and hurt. And he didn’t want to burden Yuna further by shedding anymore.
“Of course. I… Apologize for the noise. Let’s adjourn elsewhere to let Mr. Scienta rest. I’ll explain on the way.”
It was the best course of action in his view. Yuna had heard, there was no taking that back. He had caused problems in his friend’s clinic, thus she was owed an explanation. Even if he really didn’t want to recount this again, this time it was for Yuna. He just hoped he wouldn’t have to go through this with Celes anytime soon, he needed time to process before he unloaded that bomb on the icy strict general. He had already burdened her with enough…
After walking some distance himself, Caius motioned for Yuna to lead the way.
“Once I ensured the Dragonblades hadn’t been destroyed in my absence and gave Celes a break, I returned to Provo to talk to Noctis about our starscourge problem. We… Communicated with Lucis’ Kings of Yore. My idea was they could share their power with us both. In my view, I’m a Kingsglaive, and Noct’s Kingsglaive at that. I thought it made sense. But the Kings denied my request, because it didn’t follow their stupid egos and their stupid prophecy.”
Caius grit his teeth as he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to rein in his simmering heart.
“… They also revealed I am of the family Lucis Caelum. Which as the prophecy said Noctis was to be the last, meant my family’s horrible death was pre-ordained by the gods. And while Noctis’ father did make an effort to protect them by exiling us, ultimately his decision to pull his forces back into the city cost my family their lives.”
He remembered telling Yuna about their deaths, though he recalled his memories about it were more hazy back then. And of course, now there was the new underlying details. Speaking of memories…
“Every memory I had lost or repressed came flooding back out in that moment. It was… Difficult, to handle. Even I had died in the end, as predicted, protecting the last of my line. As much as that stung, I decided my own death at least, I could live with. Because it meant Noctis would survive.”
Now he didn’t even know if the Noctis in his timeline would survive much longer. He had outlived the gods’ plans for him, yes, but Caius had still died. And there was always the chance that the Noctis he had met here would still meet his end cleansing the starscourge.
“I am loathe to admit it but — not even a day later finding out the gods intended for him to die in fulfilling the prophecy was too much for me to take. They created that monster Ardyn, just to play a game of sacrificial lamb with my entire family to fix it. And the Kings of Yore knew.”
So in short, the yelling that Yuna heard was the last of Caius’ long-held worldview being shattered to pieces. His years of championing the prophecy and the heroic rise of the Chosen King, had been met with a horrifying truth to it all. And there was no going back.
Caius’ brows fiercened, as his barely held together calm began to show cracks.
“They knew, and were proud of it” Caius growled, with a distaste more bitter than the coffee. It was written all over his face that Caius had been forever changed by this knowledge, and even he didn’t know what he would do with it.
