Caius Lucis Caelum
The bar was definitely in hell. But in his timeline, every Lucis Caelum except Noctis was dead. So living and being able to reign as King was definitely a pretty enormous advantage. Zephon-wise? Caius was part of the bloodline and yet couldn’t actively use any of its power without a conduit, and he didn’t even want to get into what the hell happened to Ardyn. And Noctis got, well… All of it. But Caius supposed he could be dead here too. Or short, that seemed like a pretty sizeable downside too. End of the day, he was here, and also fairly tall. And he didn’t recall Noctis getting any taller twelve years from now.
Noctis tried to reason as well that Caius was plenty strong. “I’m more experienced, been fighting monsters and daemons since I was a child – but I’m nothing compared to the King in my time” Caius pointed out. Compared to what Noctis in a decade could do, Caius didn’t think he could match up. Heck, this Noctis even without his full power, or the extra decade, gave him serious problems. “Still…” he trailed off, trying to find some shining light in all of this as he dusted himself off. “Guess that means I’ll just have to keep fighting to get stronger. I don’t intend to let the starscourge leave me needing a savior again.”
Then and there shined just a bit of confidence. As his nerves seemed to calm a touch, the Caius that Noctis knew seemed to be returning, slowly but steadily. "Maybe I should take over your training until we find Lord Amacita. Might do us both some good, and I can't let you go back to Lucis unprepared" Caius then spoke up, only partly joking. In that moment, the smallest smirk twitched across his face. If Caius wanted to get stronger, he couldn't do much better than sparring against the future King. And Noctis needed someone to keep him sharp until his actual trainer was found. Even with the circumstances at hand, Caius was still a man of Lucis. As angry as he was at the Kings of Yore, he would not see his homeland destroyed by the coming darkness.
Noctis mentioned Alex had the same story as Renitra, and Caius let out a light groan with a roll of his eyes as Sorel was mentioned. “Of course that dick is involved somehow” he remarked bitterly, clearly still holding a bit of a grudge for Sonora. “We can question them both more later – if Sorel tries Yuna and lives. I don’t trust him to delay coming after her just because she’s tending to Ignis, and she won’t just roll over and let him put her patients at risk.”
Oh right, the “girl that works for Caius” mentioned earlier was the same one who was currently healing Ignis. Probably should have gotten that mention out earlier. “Preaching to the choir about memory problems” Caius muttered, vaguely audible. He just nodded through the rest about Cortez, but by the time Noctis asked if he would be alright, Caius seemed to have regained some balance to his posture. He walked upright and tall, broad shoulders spread out. “Aye, I’ll live. Today has been… A lot” replied Caius in the understatement of the century, his tone growing ever calmer with each moment. “But I’m still the leader of the Dragonblades. They’re still counting on me, and that means I need to stay strong. As you were strong for your people… I must do the same for mine.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius laughed, and then laughed again at both the remarks about Genesis’ reputation, and how the Dragonblades would be perfect for a “do-gooder” like Angeal. “The giant sword? I noticed he doesn’t use it” Caius inquired, still curious about the nature of Angeal’s strange weapon choices. So it was about rust? Interesting. “I know some good weapon polishing techniques that can reduce the wear, I had far too much time on my hands and needed to make the most of very poor weapons under… Well, very strenuous circumstances, to say the least.”
He didn’t really agree that turning someone’s skull into a watermelon, and a toe stub rager were all that similar, so Caius didn’t quite have a response to that one. But it seemed his interest in the wing did pay off in the form of Genesis actually being eager enough to describe how it had been made. “Shinra science” didn’t seem like a good thing though, considering their previous conversation about the organization. In fact, considering the bits about human experimentation… Well, when that little thing popped back into Caius’ mind, he openly winced. Eugh, he didn’t want to think about what had gone into creating that wing. “Sounds… Painful” came his best attempt at empathy for what Genesis might have gone through.
However, any talk of Etro was interrupted when Genesis suddenly had enough and went off at him about worthiness. “Thanks… I think?” Caius responded to what he was pretty sure was supposed to be flattery. Oh, and apparently that wasn’t an angel wing. “I still think it’s cool,” Caius then muttered, just loud enough for Genesis to probably pick up. But he had barely gotten that out of his mouth before Genesis had undid the buckle. Apparently the end really was nigh.
“Hey, watch your wing-”
Maybe “stop” might have been a more apt choice of words, but Caius wasn’t foolish enough to think he could talk Genesis into putting his buckle back on with him moving around like that. Fortunately, Genesis didn’t get his wing caught on the glider as he went into freefall. Sorry, did I say his buckle? Nope, it was for the both of them. Caius realized this pretty quickly when the flap of Genesis’ wings after being wrenched back kicked up a strong enough wind to kick the harness around and cause Caius to fall out as well, with the harness caught around his legs and restricting his movement.
“Oh shi-” slipped out as the kingsglaive did the first thing his instincts told him. Which was to summon his gunblade, summon a change in ammo and fire a flare into the sky. It quickly exploded in a blast of energy, but Caius wasn’t too trusting about whether that would save him as he hurtled towards the ocean. “Would be real nice to have His Majesty’s armiger right about now” Caius talked himself through his nerves as he prepared his Plan B. The closer he got to the ocean and the issues that came of falling from that height, the more likely they were too far from the mainland. Caius could faintly pick up screaming from the direction of the boat, muffled by the wind whistling in his freefall. Caius took a deep breath to calm himself as he held out an arm to prepare a weapon. The glaive began scanning the landscape – and then the ship – for the right point to…
Something large suddenly shot past Genesis at breakneck speeds and caught Caius in its talons mere inches from the water’s surface. The creature slowed down after grabbing Caius, revealing a big blue dragon.
“I think that’s a record,” Caius breathed out, trying to catch said breath now that he was no longer free-falling. “Thanks Vordun” came next as Caius clambered onto the scaly creature’s back, reaching down to scratch behind their ears. “You don’t have a saddle, so fly slow okay?”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius chuckled a bit as Genesis openly bemoaned Angeal being a gentleman, and that he got the white wing out of them. Genesis then brought up that as he lived with Angeal, he might still be on the market for a job offer. And doubted that it would be a problem with the Stones and Sephiroth. A louder cackle accompanied the “Sephiroth would win”. “It’s honestly refreshing to hear how close you all are” Caius admitted quietly. “I… Was lost – when I first came here. I had nobody, and had very little before that. The people I met and became close with helped me stabilize a great deal. They were instrumental to getting through this, and finding my way in a new world. It’s… Easier, when you have something – someone – to anchor you to this world.”
Right, if Genesis was going to liaison between him and Angeal, Caius supposed he should actually explain what the job was. That was probably important. “Right. I’m the leader of a mercenary guild in Torensten. We double as a peacekeeping force – the average militia in Zephon isn’t well-equipped to handle the beasts and criminals that have been popping up since the rifts that brought newcomers here started appearing. Having a group of capable “outlanders” that can handle it is the best thing for ensuring our peaceful “second chance” stays that way. Good advertising, too. People prefer to hire what they’ve already seen in action and know they’re qualified, especially if you want to tout yourself as experts in the field,” Caius explained in short. Everytime he explained the role of the Dragonblades, his explanation got just a bit shorter as he better memorized what was the most efficient way to do it.
His new sailing buddy claimed that what he did was just him being human. Caius half-nodded in some semblance of agreement, at least. “It is. But I’d still like to ensure losing control is saved for stubbing my toe on the bathroom sink – instead of mutilating someone in front of a young woman” Caius amended quietly, in short fashion.
At least Genesis kept things in good humor, sort of. Genesis joked, hopefully, that he would pop the sail if he told his story. So he wouldn’t. “I doubt it would be that interesting to you, anyway. You have an actual angel’s wing, that’s more interesting than my story,” Caius remarked between chuckles, as blunt as could be. Maybe if this thread had taken place a little later in the timeline, Caius’ story would be a little bit juicier. But that was neither here nor there. Caius knew the merits of a good story, and whatever story he could tell about his past right now would likely pale in comparison to however Genesis got that wing. “I get the impression the wing carries some unpleasant memories, so I won’t ask for more details unless you want to tell. I think it looks really cool, though. It would be convenient to be able to fly on my own.”
Genesis actually seemed interested in the goddess story. He supposed considering his own obsession with a goddess from his play earlier… Or was it an actual goddess? He wasn’t quite sure. Either way, he liked goddesses – clearly. “I believe so. She’s a bit of a distant legend compared to the pantheon Eos worships, but if I recall correctly… Etro is said to reside in the world where the souls of the dead find their rest. When I first came here, part of me wondered if that was where I had been taken. But there isn’t much about what that world is actually like. Either Zephon is the world where she resides, or perhaps I’ve been sent here as a sort of test. To see if my soul is worthy of crossing over.”
Caius looked down at his hands. “Would be nice if I knew what to do, though. I’ve been winging it for years.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Better off without, huh? Caius half-chuckled a bit at that thought. “Considering what we know now? Probably for the best. Compared to the rest of the family, you made out like a bandit though” Caius pointed out with a bit of cheek, only half serious. “Full use of the Power of Kings, mainly that armiger thingy. I can’t do it, I already tried well before today” he humorously admitted, snapping his fingers to summon his own weapons and let them float around him a bit. “I’ll improvise something, though. Even if it doesn’t beat the real thing. So you’re doing ok – being crystal transported aside. More than once, apparently, this one girl called Renitra was talking about you being sent to somewhere called Eorzea. How… Many places have you been portalled to?” he couldn’t help but ask, though the question was a touch overshadowed by the story to come.
Maybe they could review Eorzea horror stories later.
Noctis brought up an interesting question. How -did- he become tainted with the scourge? Caius shrugged at that. “I don’t know. I was on Zephon a year or so before I ran into him, so he either was consumed by it here, or managed to preserve it somehow. If he had been experimenting on himself after the Empire fell…” he trailed off, cutting himself off before he could go too deep into that line of thought. That was a bit too much for one day.
Noctis suggested taking a break, and Caius nodded slowly. He had blown out all his energy, both physically and mentally. And honestly, he was barely keeping himself upright. “Yes, I think that’s best” Caius agreed quietly as he tried to get himself to his feet. He wobbled a bit, clearly still a bit disoriented, but he grabbed what he could to support himself and get himself upwards. “We’ll talk more and figure out next steps next time. I think… I need a stiff drink. And a very long nap. I’d check myself into an inn if Yuna wouldn’t hunt me down the second there was room in the clinic, so I’ll probably head there if you need me. I’ll check in on Ignis while I’m there.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Cloud’s body language changed when their eyes met and he seemed to have caught his glances. Caius’ own expression and body language did not change to acknowledge that, instead he stayed on course and kept what he knew to himself with a continuously professional gait. Cloud seemed quite guarded in general, and Caius knew he probably wasn’t helping that. He had to wonder how much history led to a need to be that much on guard… Caius understood it, of course. Years of having to watch his back and his back alone against a world of savage cruelty and darkness would condition a man like that in a heartbeat. But he tried to recall stories of the name Cloud… Why did it seem familiar? The sword, the eyes, it all matched up with something back there in his mind.
Then Cloud stated that he wasn’t from here, which Caius didn’t seem surprised by in the slightest. “Neither are most of us,” Caius stated calmly as he motioned for Cloud to sit down at the little bar area in the corner of the sitting room. There was a nice fire nearby, which mixed with the magic crystals that staved off Torensten’s oppressive heat allowed for a comfortable, homey ambiance. Fortunately, Cloud laid out what he was looking for quite plainly.
“Well, as Tomoe likely told you, my name is Caius. I’m a leader of the guild here. We perform jobs as-required, most commonly monster hunting when something’s causing people trouble, or if someone wants a bit of protection when going through dangerous territory. Why I say we’re a bit unorthodox is that we double as a peacekeeping force – the average militia in Zephon isn’t equipped to handle the beasts and criminals that have been popping up since the rifts that brought outlanders here started showing up” Caius began his explanation, hoping to better help Cloud understand what he was getting into. Caius had also started getting some drinks ready. “Having a group of capable “outlanders” like us that can handle it, is the best thing for ensuring our peaceful “second chance” on Zephon stays that way. Good advertising, too, people like to hire warriors they’ve already seen in action.”
He looked back to Cloud, then. “Any drink preferences? With alcohol, or no?”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Some kind of creature popped out of a bag and started smacking Renitra. Caius didn’t really know what to say or do about that – or the interaction that followed. Caius noted that if her only company for quite some time was some sort of lemur, it was little wonder she was as… Eccentric, as she was. Caius had still barely even remotely processed the psychological damage that came from years of your only real company being a beat up junker car that can’t speak.
She claimed that she had gone through a lot, too much for a normal person. Or a Kingsglaive. And that got a small laugh out of the actual Kingsglaive. “Trust me when I say — the more people you meet here, the more that will be true of them as well” Caius pointed out. If she knew the whole depths of the shit he’d seen, she’d realize he hadn’t exactly lived a normal life either. “I’m supposed to be dead, for one. I died, straight up. Had a hole in my chest and everything” Caius pointed out, as-ever with the bluntness of a hammer.
Renitra introduced Oleg, and Caius greeted the lemur thing with a wave. “I have an animal companion of my own, he isn’t here right now though” Caius chimed in, conveniently leaving out just what they were. Renitra would probably find out eventually. So then came the big question.
“To put it simply. The Noctis you met and the Noctis I knew are from different times. By what you’ve told me, you met him during their journey to fight the starscourge. I met him towards the end of that journey… Ten years later” Caius started out with, because a ten year timeskip is just the absolute best way to start a story. “Noctis spent a decade inside the crystal, returning with full command of his power and ready to end the starscourge. I was young, stupid, and I made an impression on him in the battle that ensued.”
Caius pulled at his collar to reveal a glowing red claw-like scar on his neck. “The enemy had enslaved the Infernian, Ifrit, and set it upon Lucis. So I had the bright idea to try and take it down. With no magic or kingly powers whatsoever. How I survived that act of foolishness, I don’t actually know.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius was still taken aback by Yuna’s appearance. He knew why she was here, he had made a scene and this was her clinic. Of course she would have come to investigate, it made sense. Even if he wished that she hadn’t. He couldn’t believe he had let himself get carried away and cause things to get to this point.
The Kingsglaive quickly wiped his red and puffy eyes with his sleeve to be rid of any remaining evidence. Those hadn’t been tears of bittersweet acceptance of an unrequited love, nor the tears of a happy man who had found belonging. No, these had been shed from agony and hurt. And he didn’t want to burden Yuna further by shedding anymore.
“Of course. I… Apologize for the noise. Let’s adjourn elsewhere to let Mr. Scienta rest. I’ll explain on the way.”
It was the best course of action in his view. Yuna had heard, there was no taking that back. He had caused problems in his friend’s clinic, thus she was owed an explanation. Even if he really didn’t want to recount this again, this time it was for Yuna. He just hoped he wouldn’t have to go through this with Celes anytime soon, he needed time to process before he unloaded that bomb on the icy strict general. He had already burdened her with enough…
After walking some distance himself, Caius motioned for Yuna to lead the way.
“Once I ensured the Dragonblades hadn’t been destroyed in my absence and gave Celes a break, I returned to Provo to talk to Noctis about our starscourge problem. We… Communicated with Lucis’ Kings of Yore. My idea was they could share their power with us both. In my view, I’m a Kingsglaive, and Noct’s Kingsglaive at that. I thought it made sense. But the Kings denied my request, because it didn’t follow their stupid egos and their stupid prophecy.”
Caius grit his teeth as he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to rein in his simmering heart.
“… They also revealed I am of the family Lucis Caelum. Which as the prophecy said Noctis was to be the last, meant my family’s horrible death was pre-ordained by the gods. And while Noctis’ father did make an effort to protect them by exiling us, ultimately his decision to pull his forces back into the city cost my family their lives.”
He remembered telling Yuna about their deaths, though he recalled his memories about it were more hazy back then. And of course, now there was the new underlying details. Speaking of memories…
“Every memory I had lost or repressed came flooding back out in that moment. It was… Difficult, to handle. Even I had died in the end, as predicted, protecting the last of my line. As much as that stung, I decided my own death at least, I could live with. Because it meant Noctis would survive.”
Now he didn’t even know if the Noctis in his timeline would survive much longer. He had outlived the gods’ plans for him, yes, but Caius had still died. And there was always the chance that the Noctis he had met here would still meet his end cleansing the starscourge.
“I am loathe to admit it but — not even a day later finding out the gods intended for him to die in fulfilling the prophecy was too much for me to take. They created that monster Ardyn, just to play a game of sacrificial lamb with my entire family to fix it. And the Kings of Yore knew.”
So in short, the yelling that Yuna heard was the last of Caius’ long-held worldview being shattered to pieces. His years of championing the prophecy and the heroic rise of the Chosen King, had been met with a horrifying truth to it all. And there was no going back.
Caius’ brows fiercened, as his barely held together calm began to show cracks.
“They knew, and were proud of it” Caius growled, with a distaste more bitter than the coffee. It was written all over his face that Caius had been forever changed by this knowledge, and even he didn’t know what he would do with it.

Caius Lucis Caelum
After dealing with everything that had happened with Noctis, Caius had visited Ignis only to be led to another startling revelation: The gods of Eos had intended for Noctis to die as well. Caius' already crossed boundaries had gone even further, and he had begun to find that he actually detested the deities that had governed Eos for millenia, and the prophecy that he himself had for years championed. His hatred was starting to extend to his ancestors in the Lucian line too, all those stuffy ring ghosts who refused to help them fight the starscourge in full just because of some stupid prophecy and pure blood supremacy or some shit. Who gives a damn about that, really? There was a starscourge that needed to be fought and there were two Lucis Caelum here to fight it. But adherence to their stupid biases and stupid prophecy won out in the end. All while being fully aware of, and in on, that this prophecy would end in Noctis' death just as much as it did Caius and his family. A revelation that had shattered Caius' heart into pieces.
How did he cope with that? How did he even begin to process all that he had seen just in the last 24 hours? And then to make matters worse, Yuna had overheard everything and then, of all people? Alex showed up. And that was an absolute shitshow to deal with. But with that handled for now, Caius was ready to return to Torensten and get some long-needed sleep. He had agreed to take Serah home as well, as she needed to get back to her job at the school.
So Caius had met up with Vordun in the outskirts of town, and together, the two began making way for the cabin. Caius had decided to walk, wanting to clear his head. The dragon was obviously quite confused as to why they weren't flying, but still bumbled alongside its master without a further thought in its head. As the cabin came into sight, Caius had begun watching the road they had been walking next to. He would point out to a pink car that zoomed by them.
“Apparently they call that a pink punch bug,” Caius explained to Vordun, who didn't understand at all but kept padding along as Caius tapped a hand to Vordun's shoulder. “I think it goes... Punch bug, Vordun, no punch back.”
Vordun, of course, would turn to stare at Caius, then raised a big claw and tried to shove Caius with it.
“No Vordun, no punch back" Caius tried to correct the dragon. Vordun tilted its head as the dragon lowered the claw. Only to suddenly raise it again and slam it straight into Caius, sending the kingsglaive flying and crashing into a conveniently placed pile of hay. Caius emerged from the hay and spit out pieces of it, shooting Vordun a glare as the creature stared at him with blank eyes.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius very badly needed to lie down.
He had expected that his lineage would come up during some visit or other with Ignis. It was inevitable considering all that had happened. After dealing with everything that had happened with Noctis, Caius had visited Ignis only to be led to another startling revelation: The gods of Eos had intended for Noctis to die as well. Caius' already crossed boundaries had been pushed even further, and he had begun to find that he actually detested the deities that had governed Eos for millenia, and the prophecy that he himself had for years championed. All while being fully aware of, and in-on, that this prophecy would end in Noctis' death just as much as it did Caius and his family. A revelation that had shattered Caius' heart into pieces.
How did he cope with that? How did he even begin to process all that he had seen just in the last 24 hours? He had left Ignis to sleep for now, the conversation had been exhausting for the both of them. But as he turned to the door, Caius squinted as he noted that it wasn’t closed fully. Apparently in the heat of the moment, he had not heard the door opening. While it could have been a coincidence, Caius wasn’t the kind of man that left anything to chance. His expression turned cold and fierce as the Kingsglaive brought one hand behind his back in preparation to summon a weapon, and the other slowly pushed the door open with as few footsteps and as little noise as possible. Perhaps hoping to catch an assailant by surprise.
However, on the other side of the door was a familiar face. Caius blinked a few times in surprise as he recognized the woman in front of him. How long had she been there? She did run the clinic, so of course she had the run of the place, but…

Caius Lucis Caelum
Yeah. That would have been nice. Caius could only really nod in thanks. What was there to say to that? Of course he wanted to have been able to open up to him, but… It was too late now. It was too late to change anything. He had to live with it, all of it. Especially his mistakes. He had done his best to rebuild his life here and try to be better than when he first came here, but there was so much that haunted him. More, it seemed, than he ever could have possibly imagined. Though Caius’ expression grew a touch colder when Noctis brought up the assassination attempt. He had mentioned it in passing during his apology back in Sonora, but he supposed he hadn’t been able to talk about it too much with how worked up everyone was.
Granted, they weren’t much better now, were they? But at least now, they had time. There was no jailbreak in front of them this time. They had all the time they needed to work through… Whatever this was.
“Yeah. Guess I should” Caius remarked quietly, taking a deep breath as he considered where to even begin with that. At least the agreement on the flower thing, being able to loosen up, and the jokes about Noct’s height helped him relax a bit. “I may not have received any matter of the gods’ blessing, but if the tradeoff is height, I guess I can live with that” Caius surprisingly responded with a joke of his own. It would have been cruel if Caius had been spurned the way he had been – only to also be short on top of it.
Though the question of the assassination attempt did keep rattling in there. Caius supposed after mentioning it back in Sonora, it was about time he told Noctis at least some of it.
“The assailant is a man called Cortez, I think he said. I don’t remember all the details as it was a few years ago that I encountered him on Zephon, but he was a researcher for your family. Same division as my father, they worked together I think. But Cortez got caught conducting some kind of experiment – with demons. The same kind of experiments that the Empire was doing. He wanted to use it to restore people to life, but… The starscourge isn’t like that. My father discovered him experimenting on researchers that had gone missing, busted him to your father. He was freed by the Empire, and continued his research with them. I don’t know anything more of his history – up until he told me he was the one who hired those brigands to slaughter my family. Revenge for my father having him imprisoned. But when he tried to kill you, and then when he wound up on Zephon, he had been consumed by the starscourge. Not too different from how the archives depicted Adagium as being like. Killing him likely brought an end to one of the last traces of the scourge on Eos, but… Also brought him here.”
There was more to it, of course. But it was a difficult subject, and Caius wasn’t sure about going through the whole thing when he had already just suffered a great deal of trauma he still had to process.
“I uh. I think I would rather go into more detail about my death and the Zephon encounter later – if that’s ok” Caius admitted in almost a whisper, accompanied by a deep breath to try and steady himself. “First part was relevant to what I told you today. I don’t know if I’m getting through the rest sober.”
