Caius Lucis Caelum
“I would appreciate that, thank you” Caius extended his appreciation when Cindy offered to grab a new set of drinks. She herself then extended a perspective that Caius hadn’t really thought about, at least in terms of building. Getting a fresh perspective outside of your own wasn’t just useful in battle, apparently. Eventually, looking at it on your own just becomes a blur… Interesting. “I hadn’t thought of that. Guess I’m still too reliant on my own skills alone, even now” Caius admitted softly. “Might even be what’s held me back from making the most of what I’ve been building. I’ll have to try it your way sometime.”
It had been a good long while since he had actually been at the workshop. Some nutjob Celes hired had taken over his workbench while he was gone, and he had heard more than one explosion since. However, the girl was a genius, and Caius knew she was getting far more use out of the space than he was. He could do maintenance on his weapons with the tools he brought with him, but he hadn’t had time lately to do anything beyond that.
Maybe when this mess was all over, he could look at it again. Maybe seeing what Cindy was working on would provide some inspiration? Speaking of builds, Cindy reasoned that at least if it did get scrapped, someone likely found good use of it. He smiled, bittersweet, not sure how to explain that it didn’t really make him feel any better. “This is probably strange for me to say, but… It was really my only companion for a long time. And keeping it going was about the only purpose I had back then, besides surviving myself. I’d spend hours getting it just perfect, with any materials I could scrounge up, or buy in a pinch if I had the smallest bit of extra gil. I kind of miss it.”
Caius sat up fully to face Cindy when she asked about doing more events. “Haven’t thought about it yet. I took whatever I could find that would take me far away, so Lumey could get some time with her sister. I haven’t checked the board since” he admitted, scratching his beard in thought. “Suppose if you’ve got time to kill, we could go take a look.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius hadn’t expected a history lesson about his home country, but he appreciated Mu being open with him nonetheless. It was honestly surreal to have Mu opening up to him after all this time. They had worked together for a long time now, but he had never heard anything about Mu’s background, or really understood his motives. He had just been a good guy doing the right thing, but ultimately deciding to stay unaffiliated and working alone most of the time. Well, alone alongside Enma, anyway. But the clan’s history was interesting… And reminded him in some ways of the Kingsglaive, and of Celes’ Returners. “Freedom fighters, aye? That sounds like the Kingsglaive trying to retake our world. Or Celes’ Returners trying to liberate theirs” Caius immediately brought this up as soon as it came to mind. “I understand feeling like a family even without blood, though. That’s how I feel about the Dragonblades. I've long lacked family, but... With them, I just feel right.”
So Mu was like him, taken from his purpose and brought here. And had spent all his time since trying to forge a new one. “Don’t I know the feeling. The Dragonblades were ultimately what I decided my new purpose should be, since I could no longer protect Lucis or its King.”
Despite what he had said though, Mu had ultimately decided to undergo his journey anyway. There wasn’t really anything further Caius could say to dissuade him. His mind was made up. Still, he seemed pretty set on joining eventually, which Caius was glad to hear. So he still had that to look forward to. So, Caius raised a glass to that. “You have nothing to prove in my eyes, Mu. But if this journey is what you feel you need, I understand. All I can really do is wish you the best of luck in that journey, and hope that it brings you everything you could ever want from it. We’ll still be here, hopefully.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Ignis seemed relieved, somehow, that Noctis had survived. That only made him even more suspect that something was wrong. Ignis bowed in acknowledgement of his sacrifice, and Caius didn’t know what to think or do except to bow in return. It was Ignis that had paved the way to their victory, after all. Caius didn’t understand all the specifics about it, he hadn’t been in a position to. He only knew that Scienta had been instrumental to ending the scourge the way they had.
But what came next made Caius quickly wish he’d never spoken up. For the second time in the last 24 hours, Caius soon wished he could have taken it all back and continued to live in blessed ignorance. Because…
“NO!” suddenly and spontaneously spilled out without even a thought, but Caius quickly covered his own mouth before he could alert Yuna and those in her clinic.
Hearing him scream would draw every able-bodied person into this room, and Caius didn’t want that. Not to mention Ignis had been relying more on his hearing since losing his sight, he didn’t want to bring him harm. But in the seconds that followed, Caius’ mind raced as he tried to process just what he had heard.
The gods had intended for Noctis to die.
“My apologies, I didn’t mean-That’s… But that’s…”
Perhaps it would sound strange, hearing him react like this when he had just told Ignis that the Noctis in his world had conquered this grim fate. But while Caius’ information had given Ignis peace, what Ignis had provided in return only served to torment the troubled kingsglaive. Caius’ hands fell to his sides, clenching into fists and shaking uncontrollably as Caius began making noises that sounded something between a deep, angry seethe, and sobbing.
“Bastards…” Caius breathed out in a whisper, his anger towards the gods and kings beginning to resurface anew. He had thought himself having managed to get his emotions under control, thanks to Noctis. But hearing what the gods had intended pushed him off an edge that even Caius wasn’t sure if he could come back from. Tears streaked down the kingsglaive’s face, and he tried, he really tried, to stop the rapid flowing of emotion and tears. Ignis didn’t deserve to have to deal with this, but he hadn’t even had enough time to amply process the first revelation from yesterday, much less handle this one on top of it.
“They really did intend to wipe all of us out, like it was all a game to them” came out in a hiss, as Caius began pacing frantically across the room. His chest began compressing, and it hurt, and his breathing grew heavier as all the pain he had experienced because of the Kings of Yore began to flood right back. He couldn’t stop it, he couldn’t stop this pain, the tears, his anger, none of it. He felt trapped, like a horrible nightmare that he couldn’t wake up from, no matter what he did.
“My family died for that stupid prophecy, and they still intended to take Noctis as well? Why?” Caius blurted out, no rational thought being able to save him from slowly, unintentionally revealing his parentage to a likely confused Ignis right then and there. He was stuck in a loop of heavy-set panic that he couldn’t get out of. He was aware of and grateful that Noctis had survived, yes, but…
“And the kings, they knew, didn’t they? They knew Noctis was supposed to die! They refused to help us, and would only help when the “appointed time” came – what, was that only supposed to be when they carried him to his frickin’ DEATH?!” was blurted out in Caius’ escalating spiral of rage, tears and grief, not even seeming to remember Ignis was there anymore.

Caius Lucis Caelum
That? Actually got a laugh out of Caius. He had learned to be as calm as possible, regardless of what circumstances were wrought. He had to, really. Caius wouldn’t have survived for those ten years if he hadn’t. It had been a necessary thing, but to see it actually begin to vex Genesis was funny to him. What was even funnier, however, was Genesis’ insistence that he needed to read the room. As if he had somehow inconvenienced him greatly by asking for more information. Caius turned his head a bit towards Genesis, and the corner of his mouth actually seemed to form into a touch of a grin.
“You’re the one purposely trying to rile me up” Caius pointed out. Genesis hadn’t exactly been socially welcoming and caring about his feelings either. In fact, he only seemed to care enough about his feelings to the extent that it bothered him that he couldn’t get a rise out of Caius, and little else. But at the end of it, Genesis actually did decide to talk about it. Had he actually won enough trust for that, or did he just like hearing himself talk? Caius wasn’t all that sure. But it at least gave him a little bit of understanding in regards to Genesis’ way of thinking.
“That’s not fair at all,” Caius admitted softly. “It doesn’t really matter how you came to be. Life is to be cherished, while we still have it. How it started or how long it lasts shouldn’t dub you monster" the glaive mused aloud. “You dictate who and what you are, in the time allowed. Do you know how long you have left?”
Genesis had neglected to mention that he was no longer decaying, and thus no longer had such a short lifespan, so Caius had asked that question in hopes talking about it might give Genesis an outlet he probably had been lacking. His tone, while calm, was soft and empathetic, showing he wanted to be there to support this pyromaniac stranger – as strange, perhaps, as that was. Caius hadn’t forgotten that Genesis was dangerous, but he couldn’t hear that and not want to help in some way.
“Hmm, I guess it’s possible,” Caius near-whispered at the prospect of getting a team of heroes together that were large enough to overthrow Sonora’s government. “We have our own mission right now. Don’t have the resources to allocate to do both – when going to war would be such a life-changing thing for all involved. Perhaps when we make some headway, grow in resources and capability, and ensure elsewhere will be safe while we make the trek. It may eventually be doable. Once we’re ready.”
He looked out to sea and flashed a sad smile. “I’m not against taking that leap. Sacrifice isn’t new to me."

Caius Lucis Caelum
He was healing well, apparently anyway. Caius doubted he felt like he was healing much, considering the likely permanent loss of his eyesight. If only he had kept a better eye on Ignis all that time ago, maybe this could have been prevented. Maybe there had still been time to save his sight... Or perhaps not. Noctis and Prompto hadn't been surprised about their friend's blindness, after all... Something Caius had been meaning to bring up with Noctis, given time. He almost had, during their meeting. But the possibility that their futures could be drastically different was not something Caius was ready to accept. Ignis being blinded before even coming to Zephon lifted any matter of security he held in how things were supposed to go.
Caius would just have to find some solace in the smaller victories, then. Ignis was healing, albeit slower than he'd like. But he was healing, which was more than they could ask for considering how difficult it had been to bring him here. Hopefully it would speed up in time, and Ignis would be able to rejoin his companions in whatever travels -- and trials -- awaited them here. Ignis expressed comfort that at least one world had been saved, and Caius nodded slowly. Hopefully the same would be true for the others too. That's how it should go, right? He had seen the future, lived it. It had been a hard trip to get there, but they had gotten there.
Then came a question with a tone which sounded a bit odd to Caius. He told himself that Ignis was just worried about Noctis, as should be normal for someone like Ignis. But the way he said it... Caius had nowhere near the comprehension ability of Ignis, but there almost seemed to be a hint of desperation in his voice. Caius took a breath.
“He is. He had ruled for two years now, when I left Eos. I… Died, in ensuring that remained the case, that's how I ended up here," Caius spoke softly. "Don’t regret it, though. My… Duty, was fulfilled.”
Despite everything he had learned, Caius could not find himself able to regret giving up his life for Noctis'. While he felt pain when it came to the Lucis royal lineage, it was Noctis as a person that Caius remained loyal to. Whom he considered a friend... And still had been someone in his time that had given him a second chance in life. Caius had repaid that debt, he couldn't find it in himself to regret that.
“Is… There reason he shouldn’t be? The prophecy came to pass as it should. He rose up as the Chosen King and purged our star of its scourge… Just as ordained," he had to ask, shifting uncomfortably. Something about the way Ignis had asked it just bothered him, and maybe he was being paranoid, but he couldn't stomach the idea something was wrong. Though he couldn't help a bit of distaste in saying it was how things were ordained, either. But that's how it was. The Chosen King takes the throne... As the last King. The last of the Lucian line. A prophecy his family died for. Caius closed his eyes and lowered his head a bit.

Caius Lucis Caelum
“Yes, -dear-, that’s a promise” Caius snarked right back as he fought a blush, uncharacteristic with the pet names that he had read about in books. But that’s why it was called sass. Well, he supposed he was going to have to learn to start calling her by terms of endearment eventually. The concept was completely alien to the mercenary, but he knew of it, and knew it was part of the proceedings. Would he get used to it anytime soon, however? No, probably not. As far as rings were concerned, they were also foreign to him. The only ring he had ever really thought about was the Ring of Lucii, and that was a different matter entirely. This was the first ring he had ever actually owned, or had reason to think about beyond matters of business.
But Lumina claimed that she would give him a “crash course” of sorts, so he shrugged in acceptance. Well, he’d certainly rather learn about rings from the person he was sharing one with, rather than the perpetual awkwardness of learning from Serah. He didn't understand the purpose of why Lumina was offering her hand, but considering their relationship he didn't really have reason to hesitate in taking it. And he did note that her ring's color had suddenly changed...
Once they were in the hot tub and Caius had told his story, he listened as Lumina admitted he reminded her of her father. That was a strange comparison, wasn't it? Comparing one's romantic partner to their own parent. But like how he typically would, she seemed to be calling it from a logical standpoint. Finding happiness in even the smallest things. "I had no room to think about what would make me happy, only what would allow me to sleep so I could survive the next day," Caius admitted quietly. "But the sea breeze and sound does make me happy... As does being here with you."
Well, that was bold. Caius chewed the inside of his cheek after saying that one. But he decided to continue that line of thought regardless.
“It’s still hard sometimes to process that I’m here, alive. As if Etro herself chose to escort me to this world. But I'm glad for it. Being able to have an opportunity to find happiness, even in the smallest places... It's not something I ever imagined myself having."

"I suppose I wouldn't be a fan of the smell, no," was spoken far too calm, considering the implication. And Caius wasn't talking about his own entrails either. Despite Genesis setting the manor aflame, Caius still had some confidence in his own abilities. And he was scarcely ever in danger of being without a weapon. Even if he was? It wouldn't be the first time. Caius closed his eyes, though didn't lower his guard. As he relaxed a bit and felt out to the wind caressing his face, he could still hear the movement of Genesis' wing. If it came to it, he'd know.
Degrade, that had been the word that had set him off. Caius opened his eyes again when he said it, glancing at Genesis with a raised brow and a squint. That was a very strange trigger word, and it came with the implication he had been talking to someone that Genesis hadn't wanted him to be talking to. "Would you be willing to elaborate on why that word?" he asked, figuring he might as well try to learn as much as he could. It could be important, or at the least distract Genesis from trying to cause trouble.
Genesis agreed with the Sonora comparison, and Caius nodded to that... Only to let out a sigh as Genesis broached the possibility of "dismantling" it all. "My compatriots wouldn't approve of this line of thinking, but... It's not like I haven't thought about it," Caius admitted quietly. "Tearing down their hierarchy of power through force. Taking out those who shouldn't hold dominance over the people, yet exert it regardless. Making life better for Sonora's people, and ending their cycle of pain and suffering. It sounds wonderful... But I don't think I can."
Caius chewed the inside of his cheek. "There are those who would be unfairly dragged into that war if I started it. I have a responsibility to them, and the mission we swore to."
And he hated that it meant Sonora's people would suffer. He detested the very thought, it made him sick to his stomach to think of those people suffering. "One day, I'll find a way. I don't have the capacity to stand idly by forever. But no, I suppose I wouldn't be mad if others stepped up. So long as they remember that the civilians aren't their enemy. I've heard rumors of resistance groups popping up, but they always seem to lose sight of what they're fighting for."
They always seemed to be overtaken by bloodlust. Unable to discern between those in front of them.

"Didn't stop him from trying to sabotage our business" Caius muttered as Yuna insisted she shouldn't be hostile to someone she had never met. He understood wanting to resolve this peacefully, but he had already tried. Alex just wasn't the type to listen, it seemed. But who knows? Maybe Yuna would have better luck than he did. She did have that natural likeability to her, after all. Even if he still couldn't help but worry for her. He supposed that's just how it is when you have something resembling family.
As the two of them climbed out of the booth, and Caius left a tip on the way out, Caius listened as Yuna admitted Celes had been running herself ragged. "I should have known. She hasn't changed one bit since she left, then" Caius remarked, letting out a long sigh. "She chose to stay at the Rest and run all the office and paperwork things herself for the longest time, without ever bringing up that she could use some help or to train some staff to do some of that work. She ran herself ragged doing the work of multiple people by herself, before she finally agreed to hiring help only when she ran herself into needing time away. I had hoped it would be healthy for her, but..."
The mercenary shook his head, filing his hair out of his face. "I've hired some good help since, so hopefully she can take it a bit easier. I'll treat her to dinner when I get a chance, it sounds like she could use it it. Thank you for the update."
Something Caius actually did do, immediately after seeing Celes at the Rest. While he had intended to do it later, well... One look at Celes had said the best time was right then and there. As they ventured outside however, Yuna tried again to get him to stay. Another sigh answered that one.
"Alright, you win. If there's a spare room that isn't being used for patients, I'll gratefully accept your hospitality" Caius gave in finally. He'd probably regret that choice of words. "I'll leave in the morning. It'll give me a chance to check out the clinic and prepare a report for Celes. She'll want to know how you're doing."

Caius Lucis Caelum
After Cloud had finished with the receptionist, Tomoe, he would arrive in the midst of the battle. The coordination of the men had improved, giving Caius a bit more of a challenge. This motivated Caius to utilize a bit more of his power, phasing past blows as though he weren't even tangible, before delivering quick shots with the blunt of a blade, an elbow or a foot. His movements grew more aggressive as he further pressured the men, rewarding their improvements by pushing them more. It was one thing to be coordinated, it was another to maintain that coordination in the face of a strong adversary.
Eventually, the men fell at his feet. Caius de-summoned his weapon and clasped his hands together. "That's enough. You've improved nicely," Caius praised the men, who had been grumbling about how all that of that had been for nothing at the time. While they had still lost, they had progressed, and Caius wanted to ensure they understood that. To motivate them to keep growing. "As your own abilities grow, don't lose sight of how to best work together with your allies. You are stronger together, and as your teamwork improves, the stronger the threats you can take on. If you want to keep Zephon safe -- or whichever motivation has brought you here today -- don't forget that. This job isn't easy, our reputation can bring plenty of jobs and gil... But they come with expectations, too. Keep at it, and I know you'll rise to meet them."
At some point in the battle, Caius had glimpsed the sight of an unknown combatant with a massive sword from the corner of his eye. He had decided to allow the lesson to finish first before greeting them, but he hadn't forgotten them either. As the hopefuls filed out to lick their wounds, Caius turned to face them. That weapon of his was fascinating... But hadn't he seen it before?

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius had no clue what Genesis was talking about. What exactly in his word choice had set him off? Why had he rounded on him like that? Genesis didn't seem intent on telling him why, and Caius wasn't even sure if he should ask. After a few moments of thought, and after being reminded that he was, in fact, a killer, Caius decided through a teeth-full of the skin of his own cheek that he could risk it. Even if it offended Genesis, well, that was on him for going after an obviously sensitive subject.
"I've done what's necessary. Killed where I had to, kept it to a minimum if I can" Caius answered after a breath and a moment to rest -- to keep his calm. "Don't suppose you want to talk about why you looked like you were about to try and gut me?" Caius decided to needle back, with the slightest hint of emphasis on the word "try". He wasn't the icy queen that his partner was, but at times they weren't so different either.
Genesis named some things about Shinra that Caius knew, and some that he didn't either. Caius couldn't hide visible disgust this time as he described things that Shinra had done. "Some of it, yes. Greed is the strangest of strong motivators. And is more often than not, the biggest enemy of those who just want to be left alone and live their lives" he mused aloud, his hands gripping the handles tight when he felt the glider jerk to the side. Genesis waxed more poetic that Caius didn't understand, and he didn't bother to try. "It wouldn't surprise me if some of the organizations in Sonora are doing the same things you describe. The place is a hole of greed, where ethics and morality go to die."
