Into the dragon’s den
Ever since Cloud found himself in the unfamiliar realm of Zephon, he’d been catching whispers .. more like continuous comments from peeps around .. about a group known as the Dragonblades. Rumor had it they were a diverse band of mercenaries who banded together to navigate the treacherous landscape and seize opportunities as they arose or so he heard. Normally, Cloud wasn’t one to be fond of groups. His past experiences had left him guarded and self-reliant due to Shinra, but also hopeful whenever he thought of AVALANCHE. But in this strange world, the realities of survival loomed large. Maintaining his gear alone was a costly endeavor, and without a steady stream of jobs, his resources were dwindling.
The city of Torensten was a bustling hub. The streets were alive with a variety of people and creatures, each with their own stories and struggles. Cloud maneuvered through the crowded avenues, his sharp mako tainted eyes scanning for the Dragonblades’ headquarters. The building eventually came into view, an imposing structure that stood out even among the grandeur of Torensten. It was a place that radiated strength and camaraderie, qualities Cloud both admired and mistrusted.
As he approached the headquarters, Cloud couldn’t help but feel a twinge of unease. He hadn’t been invited. In fact, he didn’t even know if the Dragonblades accepted outsiders so readily. But the alternative was struggling alone in an unfamiliar world which seemed far less appealing. He took a moment to adjust the strap of his massive sword, a comforting weight on his back, and steeled himself for whatever lay beyond the threshold.

Caius Lucis Caelum
“Form up!”
Caius had, as bold and firm as any King, gave the order to the recruits in the courtyard. After his visit to see how Noctis and his retinue were doing, Caius had taken an airship back to Torensten to continue working with Celes in restoring some semblance of order. But Caius’ heart was heavy. What he had learned in Provo…
He couldn’t understand it. It hurt him, pained him down to his very soul. But for now, he knew he needed to push it down. All of that hurt, all of that pain? Was nothing compared to what would happen to Zephon’s people if he wasn’t on his game. Caius had to be at his best, and so did the Dragonblades.
Cloud would be able to hear the noises from within the Rest, an inn that had been re-purposed for use as the mercenary unit’s base. It wasn’t exactly… Imposing, that’s for sure. It looked nothing like a mercenary’s fortress, and if not for the flags and sign that held their insignia, it might be easy to miss that it was their base altogether. But it was a good property in a well-populated part of town, and they had made good use of it. The interior was… Cozy. The phrase “for hearth and home” had been employed quite literally, and he could hear the crackling of a fireplace and the clanking of mugs in the next room over.
He would be greeted by a young woman of seeming eastern descent, who gave a warm smile at the sight of them.
“Welcome to the Wyvern’s Rest! Are you a client, or an aspiring mercenary?” came a deviation of her rehearsed line. Looking at the man, she wasn’t really sure. That giant sword did suggest the latter... Though she could almost swear she had heard about a sword like that somewhere...
Meanwhile, they could hear the clanging of blades, as Caius had challenged a group of recruits to take him on as a group. Caius phased past a swinging blade, before swinging an elbow back into the recruit to send them toppling forwards into another. Another swung, and Caius materialized his two-sided blade to slam its blunt into their leg with his free hand. Exercising control over his weapons with a blue glowing aura, Caius separated the two blades from within the center sheathe, sending them flying towards two more recruits that came at him at once. One recruit tripped over the leg of the other, and their off-balance allowed him to use the daggers to knock their swords out of their hands. Caius used the opening to leave his feet and dropkick them both in the face.
“Your coordination is lacking! Come at me again!” Caius barked at them calmly, but sternly. He was definitely more irritated than usual, the group of them could see that. But this at least kept his mind occupied. And it didn’t stop him from training them as Celes had. “If you’re tripping over each other, it weakens you as individuals. But a strong unit amplifies the strength of your individual attributes. The Dragonblades are as much a unit as it is a group of mercenaries, and against the threats that Zephon throws at us? If you can’t work together, you’re good as dead. Now – again!”

Into the Dragon’s Den
Ah! Yeah. The venue indeed wasn’t imposing from an outside view, a modest facade belying its significance. For Cloud, who still grappled with the notion of finding strength within a group, stepping through those doors took a measure of courage. Solace in the company of others was not something he sought easily or often. The banner of the Dragonblades fluttered gently in the breeze. It was a symbol of camaraderie that Cloud had yet to fully embrace.
As he made his way into the hideout, the warmth of the hearth and the crackling fire muted the cold steel he carried within. The interior was cozy almost homely. One could almost forget the turbulent life of a mercenary. The aroma of hearty stew mingled with the scent of burning wood, creating an inviting atmosphere that seemed at odds with his solitary nature. A young woman of eastern descent greeted him, her smile a gentle balm to his unease.
“I’m here to join,” he stated simply, his words as straightforward as his intentions. Her welcoming demeanor eased his tension slightly, and after a brief discussion about policies and formalities, she guided him to Caius, the group’s leader, who was diligently training new recruits in the courtyard.
Cloud watched with a discerning eye as the recruits stumbled and faltered, their efforts clumsy and uncoordinated. It was a poor display for someone considering joining their ranks, but yet it didn’t deter him. He knew all too well that mastery required time and practice. He had once been a recruit himself. Alittle fledgling warrior striving to prove his worth. In truth many would dismiss him as never having been a true SOLDIER, if they knew his full story that is. But that was a tale for another time.
His mako - infused eyes followed Caius’s movements noting the precision and control with which he dispatched the recruits’ attempts. Caius moved with a grace that belied his strength, each motion calculated and efficient. Despite the recruits’ fumbling, Caius’s prowess was evident, a beacon of strength and discipline. Cloud couldn’t help but imagine himself in their place, but instead of fumbling they had, he'd wager he'd pose a challenge. Surely, Caius would recognize a formidable fighter when he saw one.
The sounds of clashing blades and Caius’s authoritative commands filled the courtyard, blending with the ambient noise of the tavern. The recruits, though lacking coordination, showed potential, and under Caius’s tutelage, they would undoubtedly improve. Cloud’s mind wandered briefly to his own training, the grueling sessions that had shaped him into the warrior he was today. He had faced countless adversaries both external and internal and each battle had left its mark on him.
For now though, Cloud kept his introduction brief. He approached Caius, his presence commanding attention even without words. Standing there, with the weight of his history and the promise of his future, he felt a strange mix of apprehension and anticipation. In his typically succinct manner he offered a simple “Hey.” His voice was steady, carrying the weight of unspoken resolve and a willingness to prove himself once again.
Cloud knew one thing for sure .. he was ready to face it head - on, with or without the support of the Dragonblades.

Caius Lucis Caelum
After Cloud had finished with the receptionist, Tomoe, he would arrive in the midst of the battle. The coordination of the men had improved, giving Caius a bit more of a challenge. This motivated Caius to utilize a bit more of his power, phasing past blows as though he weren't even tangible, before delivering quick shots with the blunt of a blade, an elbow or a foot. His movements grew more aggressive as he further pressured the men, rewarding their improvements by pushing them more. It was one thing to be coordinated, it was another to maintain that coordination in the face of a strong adversary.
Eventually, the men fell at his feet. Caius de-summoned his weapon and clasped his hands together. "That's enough. You've improved nicely," Caius praised the men, who had been grumbling about how all that of that had been for nothing at the time. While they had still lost, they had progressed, and Caius wanted to ensure they understood that. To motivate them to keep growing. "As your own abilities grow, don't lose sight of how to best work together with your allies. You are stronger together, and as your teamwork improves, the stronger the threats you can take on. If you want to keep Zephon safe -- or whichever motivation has brought you here today -- don't forget that. This job isn't easy, our reputation can bring plenty of jobs and gil... But they come with expectations, too. Keep at it, and I know you'll rise to meet them."
At some point in the battle, Caius had glimpsed the sight of an unknown combatant with a massive sword from the corner of his eye. He had decided to allow the lesson to finish first before greeting them, but he hadn't forgotten them either. As the hopefuls filed out to lick their wounds, Caius turned to face them. That weapon of his was fascinating... But hadn't he seen it before?

Into the Dragon’s Den
Cloud stood with his arms crossed over his chest as his sharp gaze followed the recruits as they filed out battered but visibly united. There was something about their camaraderie — rough yet undeniably solid — that struck him. He wouldn’t admit it outright, but it was a refreshing sight compared to what he was used to in his own life. Here, at least there was a sense of purpose among them like a shared goal.
When Caius turned to him and posed the question, Cloud’s mako - infused eyes met his. There was a moment of silence before he spoke, his voice low and steady.
"Call me Cloud. I’ve heard talk of this guild while I was out doing my own jobs around Torensten and thought I’d check the place out."
His words were as simple as always, but there was more behind them. Truth was, Cloud was still trying to make sense of this strange world he’d found himself in. He wasn’t here just to satisfy curiosity, he was looking for answers. Figuring out how he had even come to be in this world was at the forefront of his mind, though he knew that wouldn't be solved in a day.
Maybe having a guild like the Dragonblades at his back wouldn’t be so bad. It wasn’t his style to depend on others, but this place felt different, and he couldn’t ignore that. The thought of working with others toward a common goal instead of wandering aimlessly from job to job was something he was starting to consider. Unbeknownst to Cloud, Caius had his own origins tied to another universe as well. Maybe, in time, their paths would be revealed to one another. But for now, Cloud remained as guarded as usual .. though the slight softening of his stance showed he was open to whatever.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius dusted off his attire when the man introduced himself, not wanting to look too much of a mess in front of a client if he could help it. Not much could be done about his hair, though, so he just smoothed it back for the time being. Caius wasn’t all that appearance conscious in general, but the kingsglaive understood very well the importance of being a consummate professional in this line of work. So the man was called Cloud… Where had he heard that before? It reminded him of the stories that Yuffie had told. He didn’t have a photographic memory of the entire tale, but he could almost swear he had heard of a Cloud. Worse yet, was that sword. It was a dead ringer for the one he had seen on the back of Angeal. And then there was those eyes… They were the same, weren’t they? The same as Angeal… And the same as Sephiroth. They had that same strange glow, which Caius had not yet identified the cause of.
Fortunately, a good poker face hid this concern. At least for now. The best thing he could do was gather information. Caius nodded at the explanation of his business here. So he wanted to join up? He didn’t look like the type to run with a group, if he was being honest. But he wasn’t one to turn down a potential recruit, especially one who could swing around a sword like that. Especially with all the threats that were now coming down on their heads. Still, he needed to be careful with his vetting, or risk having enemies on the inside.
“The Dragonblades are always open to new recruits. Of course, we’re not exactly your run of the mill mercenary guild, either” Caius brought up, as he would motion for Cloud to follow him while he made his way back inside. “Why don’t you tell me what you know of us? I’m interested in knowing more about your background, as well. I think a good working relationship starts with being upfront. I’ll grab us some drinks.”

Into the Dragon’s Den
Poker face or not, Cloud noted the quick glances Caius casted toward his sword and then to his eyes. The recognition, however subtle, didn't escape him. It wasn't that it mattered much, but Cloud didn’t have enemies in this world — at least none that he was aware of. Yet his instincts honed from his time with SOLDIER kept him alert and always cautious of the intentions behind the gaze of another. As they moved from the training grounds back towards the guild's headquarters, Cloud maintained a measured distance, his posture relaxed yet unmistakably guarded.
"Fair enough," Cloud responded with a nod as they entered the building. His arms crossed over his chest, a natural barrier that matched his wary demeanor. He continued to follow Caius through the headquarters. "First off, I'm not exactly from... 'here'." Cloud began, his voice steady and carrying a hint of underlying questions he held back for the moment. The assumption that this guild might hold answers wasn't far - fetched. Mercenaries traveled; they heard things that others didn’t, saw places others never reached. "I was hoping your guild might help me make sense of a few things." He paused for a moment, considering his next words carefully. "I'm also looking for work."
His statement was straightforward. Work was something he understood like something tangible in a world that still felt alien. It was a means to an end, attempting at staying busy, staying sharp, and perhaps, gathering the information he needed to piece together the fragmented map of this strange new reality.
Cloud’s gaze briefly met Caius’s, his blue eyes reflecting a mix of resolve and the weight of unspoken thoughts. "I understand the value of being upfront," he added, a slight nod acknowledging Caius's earlier point about establishing a good working relationship. "And while I'm here, I intend to pull my weight."

Caius Lucis Caelum
Cloud’s body language changed when their eyes met and he seemed to have caught his glances. Caius’ own expression and body language did not change to acknowledge that, instead he stayed on course and kept what he knew to himself with a continuously professional gait. Cloud seemed quite guarded in general, and Caius knew he probably wasn’t helping that. He had to wonder how much history led to a need to be that much on guard… Caius understood it, of course. Years of having to watch his back and his back alone against a world of savage cruelty and darkness would condition a man like that in a heartbeat. But he tried to recall stories of the name Cloud… Why did it seem familiar? The sword, the eyes, it all matched up with something back there in his mind.
Then Cloud stated that he wasn’t from here, which Caius didn’t seem surprised by in the slightest. “Neither are most of us,” Caius stated calmly as he motioned for Cloud to sit down at the little bar area in the corner of the sitting room. There was a nice fire nearby, which mixed with the magic crystals that staved off Torensten’s oppressive heat allowed for a comfortable, homey ambiance. Fortunately, Cloud laid out what he was looking for quite plainly.
“Well, as Tomoe likely told you, my name is Caius. I’m a leader of the guild here. We perform jobs as-required, most commonly monster hunting when something’s causing people trouble, or if someone wants a bit of protection when going through dangerous territory. Why I say we’re a bit unorthodox is that we double as a peacekeeping force – the average militia in Zephon isn’t equipped to handle the beasts and criminals that have been popping up since the rifts that brought outlanders here started showing up” Caius began his explanation, hoping to better help Cloud understand what he was getting into. Caius had also started getting some drinks ready. “Having a group of capable “outlanders” like us that can handle it, is the best thing for ensuring our peaceful “second chance” on Zephon stays that way. Good advertising, too, people like to hire warriors they’ve already seen in action.”
He looked back to Cloud, then. “Any drink preferences? With alcohol, or no?”
