[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Blinded by the Light”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Night after night, she would see it in her dreams.
The bright white sun in the black velvet of the eventide sky. There were the stone archways, ancient and cracked, yet still standing strong. They rose to the skies so high. It made Hilda dizzy to look up at them. Yet, the light could be seen perfectly centered from each archway. Her heels snagged on the low lying vegetation and crags in the ground.
The air was abnormally still until, in the next heartbeat, it suddenly wasn’t. A rush of wind ruffled hard against her hair and skirts and she closed her eyes against it. Then, as if carried on the wind, a voice whispered upon it, undecipherable. When she opened her eyes again, the sun was too close to the earth. It beat its light down, nearly taking a quarter of the sky.
She tossed her hands in a feeble attempt to protect herself from it. The fissures around her lit up with the same bright white light. That was when…
She would wake up from her dream, a gentle groan escaped her lips as the sun was unrelentingly in her eyes.
That was why she was here in the Fractured Planes. It was as if called to her. As if it pulled the holy essence of her magic to pay tribute to it. And if she came, maybe her visions would be put to rest.
It was surprising to see upon her arrival that the Crystal Order freely allowed visitors to come to their city. In fact, the city itself was spruced up as if it were some sort of festival of praise. She did not know much about their religion, but she did come here to learn. Perhaps, it would appease whatever force tormented her from so many miles away.
The first thing they removed from her was the golden dress. Instead, they dressed her in the purest of white dresses. The lines of it were simple and elegant, but she felt like she might be joining them in a Maypole ritual soon. The chanting seemed to stop during the feasts that they served all the newcomers. And in between conversations the townsfolk here offered small prayers.
It was here, in this great open-air temple, that Hilda sat, in a white gown and a flower crown. They spiced her wine with something. It seemed she craved more and more of it. Yet, the world seemed to become stranger and stranger the more she drank. Something told her she should stop. She tried to only ask for water, yet more wine they gave her insisting she drink.
For it was cold outside tonight. The wine would keep her warm blessed by the crystals light.
And the party continued with dance, wine, and music. There was the tinkling of laughter as men and women tugged on her arm invitingly. To come dance and warm by the bonfire. And the drink made her feel so giddy and light that denying them seemed unreasonable.
Certainly there was no harm in enjoying herself a little while longer.

[attr=class,bulk] Yuna didn’t often travel as far south as the Fractured Plains, but she had been there once or twice before to visit the Crystallus Divider. She had hoped then to learn more about the summons of this world and how they differed from the aeons of Spira. Particularly Shiva, since the ice-clad figure had been the only one to still answer her call ever since she’d woken up on Zephon. If the summoner had hoped to learn more about the religions of this world though, she had been sorely disappointed. Outside of a group of people calling themselves the ‘Crystal Order,’ the Divider had mostly seemed to be a tourist trap. While Yuna had been interested in the Order itself, the group hadn’t been particularly interested in answering her questions beyond the surface level. They seemed to be a bit secretive and reluctant to divulge information to someone who was a stranger.
That’s why Yuna had been so intrigued when she had heard about the group’s Day of Welcoming. Perhaps if she went back, she would encounter better results this time.
The Fractured City was entirely different than Yuna remembered it—the people were cheerful and loud, the streets were decorated with banners, and instead of the residents refusing to meet her eyes, she was immediately greeted and grabbed by the hand. A nice woman presented her with a white dress in roughly her size, and though Yuna blushed at having to change in a room with a few other women, she consented to pull it on and stowed away her usual blue skirt and white chemise in her bag. She felt strangely vulnerable without them, but everyone else was in all-white, and Yuna certainly didn’t want to offend them and their traditions. She was there to learn after all.
They provided a feast, and while it was delicious, Yuna was more interested in their chants and prayers. Something about it all had a troubling resemblance to the Church of Yevon, but she did her best to tell herself that she was overreacting based on her own bad experiences. Not all devout religions had a darker side to them. Just because Yevon had manipulated Spira for a thousand years didn’t mean that these people were also being led astray. Religion was comforting and had a sense of order. Yuna was just needlessly dredging up the past.
Doing her best to swallow her discomfort, she followed the crowd to the large temple in the center of town. More out of habit than anything, she even knelt and offered the Prayer of Yevon to one of their holy figures as she silently asked for protection. While the people were understandably confused by her particular hand gestures, they seemed to appreciate the sentiment and plyed her with some sort of mulled wine that warmed her against the chilly day outside. Yuna was not the most accustomed to alcohol, but she’d thought that she could fairly gauge her own tolerance. Apparently not, because after only two cups of wine, the church had taken on a hazy shine and the air felt a bit too warm and giddy. Nothing was inherently wrong with the scene, but Yuna felt a thrum of panic anyway that was dulled by the wine.
It was so different from Yevon and yet so similar. The smiles on the priest’s faces were starting to look painted on. She needed air.
In her haste to get outside, Yuna ran straight into a blonde woman who was only trying to enjoy the dancing. “Oh! I’m so sorry.” She did her best to make sure the woman was alright, feeling suddenly embarrassed by her reaction. Clearly she wasn’t over what had happened on Spira enough to be here right now. “I’m Yuna. Are you just visiting for today too?” She suspected as much—the woman’s cheeks were flushed with either wine or dance, which was exactly how Yuna felt too. The atmosphere had that effect.

Hope you don't mind me joining! Thought it would be interesting since Yuna used to be in a cult.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Blinded by the Light”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]The fire was indeed warm and its glow was overly warming. She spun with some of the other ladies, who sang the light praises. Flowers and bramble were tossed into it with plumes of fragrant smoke. The scent was offered to the Crystal’s Light. What else outside of this fun could matter? For a moment, Hilda thought she could see a face forming in the fire. Then…
Hilda was staggered off balance when she turned and a young lady hurriedly bumped into her. The petite woman steadied herself and, for a moment, her eyes cleared. “I am visiting, yes.” Hilda felt her tongue be too lax to speak in her proper tones. “I never imagined to be treated with such hospitality.” A mirthful giggle left her lips and the tips of her fingers came up as if surprised by the sound that left to begin with.
“Why the hurry?” She hummed merrily, clapping her hands together as if she had an idea. “It would be delightful for you to join us in dance!” Hilda held out her hands to the young summoner, a smile on her face. Then, there was the mental struggle again. It was as if her body was enacting things to another’s will.
Hilda wanted to know why the other looked so panicked! That was a reasonable human question! Did her heart race like Hilda’s own? Hilda touched her own brow as if trying to think, yet her mind was much too foggy to put a coherent thought together.
“The choosing of the Holy Bride will take place tonight,” A priest, dressed all in white and gold, came to stand on a balcony that overlooked the dining area. He raised his wooden staff high as if to gain attention. “The Holy Bride is groomed in how to commune with the Crystal’s Light in hopes of one day opening the gate to the Divine Light. It is an honor to be chosen. The preparations for the trials are underway.”
There was a loud cheer that passed through the hall at the news.
[attr="class","character-spring-1e"]Yuna Lol. I don't know what I'm writing. This sounded sus culty. Definitely not going to give Yuna any PTSD.
[attr=class,bulk] The woman that Yuna had bumped into didn’t seem to be hurt or too upset at the interruption. On the contrary, she looked absolutely giddy with wine and dance. In a relaxed tone, she confirmed that she was also just a visitor for today, and she praised the city’s hospitality. “They’ve been very welcoming,” Yuna agreed, smiling slightly at the blonde woman’s enthusiasm. It did something to lessen her own panic. Obviously she was overreacting when everyone else was having such a good time. Yuna must have just not realized how strong the wine was, and now she was seeing connections to Yevon where there were none. Perhaps this night could be good for her if she managed to loosen up.
The blonde woman asked her why she was in such a hurry, but under the haze of the lights and the music, Yuna was having a hard time recalling. “I thought-...You know, I’m not sure. I think it was just my imagination running wild.” That was a relief to admit, and when the stranger held out her hands in an offer to join the dance, Yuna felt like a weight had dropped off her shoulders. “I do love to dance,” she said with a giggle that surprised herself as she took the offered hands and stepped into the circle. “Do you think there are any lost souls in need of sending?”
The last question had been half mumbled to herself as she joined the swaying and twirling crowd. It probably didn’t make any sense to the kind stranger, but to Yuna it was because she almost never danced outside of a solemn occasion like the sending. This was a strange change of pace, but it wasn’t entirely unwelcome. Unfortunately, Yuna had really just started to enjoy herself when she noticed the woman from before was touching her own forehead as if troubled.
“Are you alright?” Yuna asked a bit dreamily, but that was when the music quieted as a priest in blinding robes came out onto the balcony overlooking them. He held a staff in one hand, and the familiarity of it all might have been a little comforting if not for the first words out of his lips.
Holy Bride?
An image flashed through Yuna’s mind of having to face Maester Seymour through a veil while her friends were held at gunpoint behind them. He’d forced her to go through with the ceremony, and then he’d kissed her and-
Yuna flushed and glanced to the side as her dread from earlier came back full force. The haze and numbness were still there, but it couldn’t fully contain her clarity as she looked around at all the visitors in the throng. How had she not noticed before that they were all young women dressed in white? Somehow she hadn’t noticed much at all since setting foot in the temple, but they were clearly preparing for some kind of ritual. Yuna suddenly didn’t want any part of it.
The summoner took the blonde woman’s arm in what was probably too familiar a gesture for someone whose name she didn’t even know yet, but it helped to ground her. “Something isn’t right here,” she whispered, hoping that none of the locals would overhear. And then a little louder. “Will you take some air with me before the trials?”

[attr=class,tagline]@ladyhilda
Oh god they are both so drugged and this keeps escalating lol.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Blinded by the Light”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]There was a conflicted look in the young lady’s eyes. Then, Yuna tried to give voice to what conflicted her. Only she could not. This gave Hilda a spark of lucidity that maybe there was something wrong. She tried to hold onto the race of her heart in an effort to combat the forced calm. Drawing the summoner into the dance circle with her, “Lost souls in need of sending?” A gentle echo of Yuna’s own words, as if trying to understand that concept. “Alas, I fear I understand not and thus unaware if there are. Is that a part of what will happen tonight?”
Was this some cleansing of the soul, like a church might offer in prayer and solitude? Or was it a ritual to put the dead to rest? Perhaps, she should recommend Headstone Forest?
Hilda had not realized she touched her brow. She must be out of it if she could not disguise her distress in this social setting. “The excitement might be a bit much. I only feel a bit faint.”
The priest made his announcement and several thoughts crossed Hilda’s mind. She was already married in another world. She had been a child bride to serve the regency and its people. And that marriage had been strained and hurtful to the point she ran from it thirteen years later. To rush into a new strange one sent her into a panic.
And yet, that strange tug at her holy essence felt most welcoming. Perhaps, to bring divine light to the world was what she was meant to do. Surely, such holiness could be good for the people. What else could the purpose be of a scorned divine sorceress?
There was a worried whisper in Hilda’s ear that overrode the welcoming thoughts. “No.” She agreed with Yuna. Nothing was right here. “Of course. Let us calm our mind and prepare.” Hilda played along. She looped her arm into Yuna’s, much like a friend would. She pretended to not take heed of the eyes of priests that watched them as they left for the exit.
However, no force was used to stop them. There was a porch with some waist-high walls right outside the doors. Torches lit the area. It was clear guards were posted at the very exit, even though they wore nothing but white robes and gold sigil upon their breast. “I can distract them if you wish to leave.” Hilda murmured in Yuna’s ear.
[attr="class","character-spring-1e"] Yuna Hilda gotchu. She will harass the guards for you to go to safety.
[attr=class,bulk] The blonde woman seemed equally as dizzy after the priest’s announcement, and she returned Yuna’s whisper that something about this whole thing was off. To the summoner’s relief, she played along and the two walked towards the exit on each other’s arms like they had been friends their entire lives. No one stopped them, but Yuna was uncomfortably aware of the eyes on them as they declared that they were going to take some air to prepare. The porch itself was clear even if there was a small wall around it with two priests keeping watch at the gate. Yuna had no doubt that they would be stopped if they went any further than the porch.
The blonde woman whispered in her ear that she would distract the guards if Yuna wanted to escape, and she looked up at her with widening eyes. The cool night air didn’t completely erase her spinning head, but it did give enough clarity for her to realize how selfless of an offer that was. Yuna’s heart went out to this kind stranger, and she gave her a slightly sad smile in return. “I don’t even know your name…”
Glancing at the priests standing guard by the door, Yuna took a deep breath and steeled herself before shaking her head. “Thank you, but…I can’t. It would be one thing if I could get help, but with this place being so isolated…” Whatever trials were taking place tonight would be over by the time that she could make it to Aljana and back, and they both knew it. If Yuna left now, she would just be saving herself, and she couldn’t make that decision. Not when this stranger and all the other women inside were still in danger.
“We’ll just have to survive their trials and save ourselves,” Yuna said determinedly as she clasped her hands together. The effect might have been a little diminished when she was slurring from the wine and haze, but hopefully that didn’t matter. “I’m Yuna by the way. I have magic and a little summoning if we need it.” Hopefully whatever they had been drugged with didn’t affect her magic too much, but they would cross that bridge when they got there.
A priest inside the temple poked his head out the door in a less than surreptitious way as he looked them over. He was probably checking to make sure they were still there, so the trials were almost certainly getting ready to start. Yuna was still uncertain about this entire situation, but she was confident in her decision to not just save her own skin. Taking one last breath of fresh air, she looked up at the blonde woman who was with her. “I think that’s our queue…”
