Zack loved to travel, but he hadn't done too much of it since arriving on Zephon. He did go places to help people out, but he never stayed long. There had been some days where he had the plan of going somewhere, but then someone asked for his help. Zack was never one to say no, so of course he put his own plans on hold to go help out. Plus, most of the time he got paid for it, so the more money he made, the better his traveling would be. It was usually always worth waiting a little longer.
Today though, nothing was going to stop him. He had mentioned it to people around town that he was going away, and they were all fine and dandy with it. He mostly did that so he could actually leave without being stopped. He helped his landlady with her chickens really quick before setting off. Did Zack have any idea where he was going to go? Absolutely not, and he didn't mind it being that way. He was just going to let his feet walk and eventually he would get somewhere.
That somewhere was Mount Hotan, and he was not upset in any way. There was a really fancy ski resort, and Zack couldn't of been happier. Did he know how to ski? Or snowboard? Not really, but how hard could it be? He could fight enemies while riding a motorcycle at top speeds without blinking, so flying down some snow on pieces of wood should be a piece of cake! As he looked around, he noticed it was mid afternoon, and by the time he checked in and got everything settled, it would be pretty late.
And late it was, but he decided to head down to the main area for some hot chocolate by the fire. As he went to take a seat, he almost dropped his mug. "Genesis? Hey man, didn't expect to see you here! How've you been?" Of course he went to go sit by him. Of course he didn't realize that Genesis definitely did not want his company. He was just glad to see a familiar face! This trip was already going well.
Zack felt really bad, he didn't like to hurt people that hadn't done anything or weren't an evil people that weren't out to get him. Especially a petite female that instantly fell to the ground because he was decently big guy. Not a tank like Angeal, but he was pretty close. The girl snapped back at him and held his hands up. "I'm so sorry, let me help you up." Holding out a hand, he finally got a good look at her, and it seemed she had done the same because she called him Uncle Zack.
Boy was he dumbfounded. He had no siblings, so there was no one to give him nieces and nephews. Before his brain could continue processing what she had actually said, she changed it. Well now he was even more confused, even though that wasn't really that hard with Zack sometimes. Once she stood up and he could really see her face, it hit him. She was a lot older now, but it was the same girl he had run into in Wutai and his face lit up.
"Of all the places to run into you again! Yeah, I did die, gunned down by Shinra ironically, but then I ended up here so there's that." She was then snapping at him and he threw his hands up. "Hey now! I'm sorry! I got locked in a mako pod for years and then yeah, dead." He scratched the back of his neck. He wasn't going to lie though, with everything that had gone on, he had completely spaced that he used to help her out.
"Yeah, that's not a shocker, they rarely answered me." The other First Class SOLDIERs weren't much for fun, or conversating. Unless it was Genesis and Loveless. Yuffie! That was her name. No, he didn't forget at all. "I remember, the little ninja from Wutai!" He listened to her and gave her a huge smile. "Oh wow, that's amazing Yuffie! All by yourself?" He had no idea what had happened after he died. No idea that Yuffie had met Aerith and Cloud.
"Ninety-seven. Ninety-eight. Ninety-nine. One hundred." If you guessed that Zack was doing squats, you'd be absolutely correct. It was part of his morning routine, so honestly, it's not hard to know that. Stepping into the shower was next, and it was usually pretty quick since Zack never wanted to lose any daylight. Not like he really ever had much of anything important to do, but he always wanted to be ready, just in case.
Making his way into the town from his little "home" on the outskirts, he waved at just about everyone he walked by. Since he had arrived in Zephon, he had made himself a home in Torensten. After helping an old lady out, she let him live in a room of a hotel she owned in exchange he helped her out around the place. Of course, he still took odd jobs here and there to buy things he needed. He still paid her a little bit, on the off chance there wasn't anything for him to help her with.
Over time, he had helped out quite a lot of people and was starting to be well known in the town. If you knew Zack like you think you do from how he starts his day, you would know that this was to be expected. If he hadn't helped you out, well then you probably chatted with him a time or two, or at least overheard him once or twice. The man was not a quiet one. Needless to say, he was well liked in Torensten.
Today, he was helping hang a store sign for a new clothing store that was opening up. Nothing like standing on a ladder, holding a heavy object to start the day! After he and another guy double checked it was secure, they made their way down and stood back to observe their work. Of course, Zack never really looked where he was going, and ran into someone. "Oh snap, I'm sorry! I wasn't watching, are you okay?" He turned around, but there was no way he knew her.
There were two ways Zack looked at new adventures. One, been there, done that. Two, haven't done it, let's go. He wasn't one to shy away from a lot, and sometimes that got him into trouble. He didn't mind though, it definitely made life that much more fun and interesting. He wondered how Angeal had put up with him for so long, the two were pretty opposite from each other. Angeal liked to think things through while Zack ran head first into everything he encountered. Hey, he was still alive and that's all that mattered!
"Don't sweat it man! I don't have any plans and adventures are kind of my thing. Plus, you seem like a cool guy, I'd like to help out." Prompto pointed out to not hurt anyone, and Zack scratched the back of his neck. "Yeah, that was my bad. I have an odd sense of humor. I'm not really one to just attack anyone, I have to have a reason. I like to say things that sound funny in my head, but don't come out that way." There were many times Zack should have just stuck his foot in his mouth, but he never did.
There was something about the blonde that made Zack curious, but he wasn't going to push it. He had just met the guy after all, it wasn't time to go prodding into his mind. Not everyone grew up like he did, even though he had been through his fair share of, not so great things. Zack smiled back and saluted Prompto. "Yes sir!" Saying that reminded him of being in SOLDIER and he shuddered just a little. Time to move!
"Thanks! Don't feel bad if you don't find them or end up not even remembering who they are. I'm sure they'll show up eventually if they're here." Zack had described his friends pretty quickly, and not really with too much detail, so he wouldn't be surprised if Prompto had forgotten soon. Though Sephiroth might be one that if Prompto saw him, he would remember that Zack was looking for him. The long silver hair stuck out like a sore thumb, and his sword didn't help much either.
Daemons? Well they sounded fun. "Monsters that only come out at night? Dang, that sounds crazy. We had a lot of monsters in my home world, but they came out whenever and wherever, they didn't care at all. I can stay with you if it's no trouble. I, uh, don't really know how to get back to where I was anyways, especially not in the dark. I'll go half with you on a room because I was gonna end up getting one anyways. Might as well make it cheaper for both of us!" Yeah, Zack ended up lost by coming here. No big deal.
Prompto was then explaining Sonora to him and Zack listened. What he was describing reminded him of when he had met Cloud. They were with two other SOLDIERs and Tseng, the Turk. Their helicopter had crashed and they had to finish the mission on foot. He and Cloud were used to mountains and the cold, so they were constantly ahead of everyone else. There hadn't been many monsters that came along that day, but there still wasn't a lot that Zack was scared of.
"I don't mind the cold, we had some rough winters where I grew up. Plus, I traveled all over so some places were freezing! As for mean, this baby can handle anything. I say bring it on." Patting the Buster Sword, he gave Prompto a reassuring smile. He wondered how much fighting the man had actually done in his life. He was a shooter, so if the two teamed up to go to Sonora, Zack could handle the close distance and Prompto the longer distance. It'd be perfect! "Do chickens lay eggs? Of course I do!"
When Prompto told Zack he didn't need to help, he shook his head. "To be honest, I don't really have much of anything to be doing. I don't really have a job, I just do random things here and there. I'm not tied down to anything currently so I'm wide open for adventures!" He was still living at the little inn Cissnei had shown him. There wasn't a reason not to, it was free living since he helped out a lot around the place. He had a good thing going for him, why mess with that?
Zack's new blonde friend, which he was starting to think would get confusing if he ever found Cloud again, seemed to like his cool word and he gave him a wink. Prompto kept up pretty well, and Zack had to admire that. He was pretty fast due to the mako in his system added in with his years with SOLDIER. You wouldn't really think so since he had a giant sword on his back, but it didn't slow him down at all.
So far, Zack was really enjoying hanging out with Prompto. The other man seemed a little on edge, but had a happy personality regardless. Zack didn't know much about him, so he could only assume that his past had something to do with it all, as it did with pretty much everyone. He himself had his upbringing to thank for the way he was. Gongaga was a community where everyone got along, helped each other out and looked to the brighter side of things. He knew things worked out in the end.
Chucking a little bit, Zack gave a nod. "Yeah, they'll stick out all right. One has long silver hair and an even longer sword. Another is built like a tank with long black hair, but has a heart of gold. There's one that doesn't really stick out appearance wise unless you count his crimson hair, but his way with words is inspiring and annoying at the same time. The last one I'm really looking for has spiky blonde hair you can probably see from miles away." He had already run into Aerith, though the meeting was brief, he was sure he'd see her again.
Looking around, Zack realized he really didn't know where they were. That wasn't surprising though. Rubbing the back of his head, he looked at his hopefully new friend. "Alright, it's your time to shine. Where are we headed now?" Traveling with someone who knew the area even just a little better than himself would definitely be a good thing. Maybe he would finally learn his way around!
Zack watched as Prompto followed suit in sitting down, but the blonde seemed restless. Zack remembered when he was like that as well, not being able to sit for more than ten seconds without needing to get up and go do something. Being with SOLDIER had helped him overcome that, since he had to sit in waiting on multiple occasions. He still wasn't the best at it, but it had gotten a lot better over the years. He had to give a small smile at the blonde though, he was at least figuring out what to do to help occupy himself.
The next thing Prompto said made Zack tilt his head to the side. "Sonora, huh? Well, I don't know what you have there, but we can get there as quickly as we can once we get out of here. I can't remember where it is, but I'm sure you do if you're headed there?" That was typical Zack, offering help to a place he didn't even know where it was. Then again, he could know Sonora but didn't remember what the town was called. He was good at that too.
Prompto was then telling him about his experience with arriving to the place, and Zack could relate a little bit. He was alone when he got here and had to leave a friend behind. When he said he had to help his friends, Zack gave a nod. "Say no more, I'm always down to help people in need, even if it is just helping you get to the place you need to go before parting ways. Let me take a look out there."
Practically crawling, Zack made his way over to the edge of the hole in the wall and looked out. The guards were there, but they were at the corners of the building, a decent distance away from their location. "Perfect, time to boogie!" Giving Prompto a wave over, Zack grabbed the Buster Sword before jumping out of the hole in the wall and sprinting out of the building, hoping Prompto was behind him.
Once they were out, Zack stopped a moment to catch his breath a little. They hadn't gone far, but the adrenaline was kicking in too. As he calmed down, he remembered Prompto asked him a question. "From what I've heard, I've got some friends here. I'm not out actively looking, mainly because I'll get lost if I try that, but I'm keeping an eye for them. I figure I'll overhear a location or see them at some point, so it'll all work out!" Zack's optimism was clearly the only thing keeping him going these days, and he was okay with that.
At Prompto's reaction, Zack decided that when telling people how he ended up here, he should probably word it a little better. "Uh, yeah. It's a whole thing. To sum it all up a bit for the time being, I found out some secrets about the company I worked for, was kidnapped by an evil scientist and tested on for years. I escaped with my friend, but they found me anyways and went after me." Well, that sounded almost crazier than it actually was. "It sounds fake, but it's not. I can tell you more when we get out of here." Zack agreed.
If Prompto didn't really trust him before, then Zack had probably just made it a little worse. The guy seemed like a good guy, and someone fun to have around, so he really hoped they would get past this awkward first encounter and move on. In a way, he reminded Zack of Cloud, but more outspoken. Though, that could just be the blonde hair and the skeptical nature, but that was besides the point.
It was true, Zack had gone through so much training, that he didn't even notice that it was basically programmed into him at this point. He may be, well, a puppy, but he was still graceful when he moved. He was used to sneaking, so it was like second nature to him to move swiftly and gently wherever he went. He did make sure to make his steps just a bit softer in here, since it was a rather unstable building after all.
"Sorry about that, didn't mean to pull you that hard." Zack whispered. He had a habit of forgetting he was enhanced by mako, especially in a new world. The blonde was out of breath, but had kept up so Zack had to give him credit for that. He wondered what he did in his old world, figuring he would find out as soon as they were out of the rubble.
"Another way it is! That was my choice as well, just giving out other options." Zack wasn't one to choose to fight the innocent, though he had been given orders to do so, and had done so. This was a new world, so it was time to try to put his past behind him and move forward. Prompto's next idea was to wait it out. Quietly moving to a place a little farther from the hole, set the Buster Sword against a wall, and then sat against it. "It is getting darker, so they might be switching shifts."
When she stated she didn't know what a simulation room was, Zack had to think about how to describe it. Let's face it, he wasn't very good at explaining things sometimes. "Well it's basically a fake scenario. You're put in a certain room or area that's not really there and you can battle freely without the worry of destroying things." Okay, that was decent explanation and he hoped he did well with it. If not, he would try to go into further as well.
Zack couldn't lie, the next thing she said almost had him in tears. He had never been told to have safe travels, mostly he was just told to not be reckless because that's usually how he did things. She didn't know him that well, so that was probably why she was being kind about it. "Thanks, I wish the same to you. Have you met anyone from your world yet?" He realized that they had talked a bit about him, but not about her.
Giving a smile at her remark, he turned to follow her to the booth. Also taking a business card, he shoved it in his pocket. He wasn't sure if he would ever really need it since cider wasn't his drink of choice, but it would be good to have for an occasion that could pop up. He wasn't much for alcohol at all really, but if he were to drink, he would get some beers with the others. That didn't happen since they were all usually busy.
As he took his cup, he shot a wink at at the lady at the booth, who blushed. Zack had a charm, and he knew it. His positive nature and friendly attitude made it hard for anyone to not like him, even if they were annoyed by him. Taking a drink, he stared into the cup. He hadn't been sure of what he was going to think of the taste, but partnered with the pork sausage, he was delighted. "Man, I was missing out in Gongaga. This is really good."
Zack had always been a man who had a way with words. He knew how to get himself out of most situations, and could rely on his strength and ability to fight to get himself out of things he couldn't talk his way out of. To be honest, he would much rather figure things out than fight, but would do what he needed to in the end. He was starting to think that this situation might not end up in a fight, and he was really glad for that. Who knows, maybe he would end up with a new friend out of the whole ordeal.
When asked about Provo, Zack shook his head. "No I haven't. I've only been to Torensten so far." It was strange to even himself that he had been on Zephon a few months now and had yet to really explore. Zack loved seeing new places and meeting new people, so staying in one place for so long was really kind of odd for him. Though he had made a decent amount of money by doing that, so he at least had that going for him.
Zack was about to answer the question about not being from there when the guy kept talking. It seemed realization had dawned, and Zack was glad for that. He listened as the guy spoke and gave a small chuckle when he finally stopped. "Nope, definitely not from here. Got gunned down by the company I work for and woke up here." It was probably not that healthy to talk about his death that way, but Zack was over it now. Well, mostly.
From what he could tell, the other guy, now known as Prompto, liked to talk as well. This would prove to be interesting. Just when he was going to answer, Prompto suggested just what he had been thinking himself. "Yeah, that's a good idea. Let's head out this back way. I didn't see as many guards in that area." Heading down a little ways, Zack ducked under some rubble and headed towards an opening near the back.
"Where I'm from, huh. Well, where I was born was great. It was a little town in a rural area. Everyone in the town knew each other and helped each other out. We would harvest food together, walk to school together, everything." Zack missed the heck of Gongaga, and would give anything just to go back and stay there for the rest of his life. He couldn't now, and he wondered how his parents were doing.
Just as he opened his mouth to continue on, he heard a guard talking. Grabbing Prompto by the arm, he pulled them both against a wall, which made dust and small rocks fall as he did so. Peering around the corner, he saw three guards right outside the hole he had found. "Well, we could either wait until they move away, find a new exit route, or fight them. Which sounds more fun?" Zack gave Prompto a smile as he waited for an answer.
