WOULD YOU SAY I BECAME A HERO?
Scratching the back of his head, he gave a weak smile. "I mean, with you and Angeal here, you guys can make sure it doesn't happen. Hopefully someone that's a little, uh, eccentric will talk to him about it. Maybe it won't go the same way it did last time. It does help that Hojo's lab and research stuff aren't here, so we have that going for us." This way, Sephiroth won't be able to dig really deep into everything and just maybe he'll think for a little bit about it and then move on. Hopefully.
Honestly, everything that had happened didn't really make much sense to Zack either, so he wasn't surprised when Genesis seemed confused. "Well I guess he didn't. He came back after I died I guess. Cloud had taken the Buster Sword and carried on. Sephiroth lived, went even crazier and tried to destroy the whole planet." Maybe it was for the best that they were all here now and could start over, even it had meant being ripped from their home.
"Yeah, no one really knew about her. She lived like a normal person in Sector Five. She grew flowers and helped out the people in the slums. I met her when I crashed though the roof of the church she had her flowers in." That's normal, right? No, but Zack said it like it was like taking a stroll in the park. Nothing was really normal to any of them anyways, so he wasn't really thinking much of it.
More Loveless. At this rate Zack usually just smiled at the quotes and carried on with the conversation since most of it just confused him. "Oh, think they'll let us take some hot chocolate with us? Can we leave with alcohol?" Genesis explained what they needed to do and Zack beamed. "Oh man, a lift sounds cool!" He definitely preferred that over being carried by Genesis in the air, so he was definitetly happy about it.
Sephiroth had left the tree and was approaching Zack, and it was honestly pretty nerve wracking. Zack couldn't tell how his mood was, he never really could. Making sure to keep his breathing even, he hoped that the initial encounter would go smoothly and that Sephiroth would at least not hate him or anything. Though now that he remembered, this Sephiroth barely knew him. He hadn't made First Class yet, hadn't gone on any missions with Sephiroth, or anything like that. They were basically strangers.
His name was spoken, so Sephiroth at least knew who he was. Then again, he was friends with Angeal and Angeal was Zack's mentor so that did make sense. Also meant that he would know that Angeal called him puppy, so that was great. He really hoped Sephiroth would see him as more than that, that Angeal had at least mentioned that he was doing well in SOLDIER. The last thing he needed was Sephiroth treating him like a child.
"Uh, no I wasn't. I'm here traveling and decided to check out the area." It was definitely a little strange to be able to go out and about without the fear of monsters popping out of nowhere every five minutes. There was no war to be fought, no one needed to use them as weapons. It was an uneasy feeling, but it was relaxing as well. There was no reason to constantly be on edge, wondering what would come after him next or where he would be sent.
Now that he had run into Sephiroth, Zack had no idea what to say. "So, how long have you been here on Zephon?" There, that seemed like a good question to ask. In his mind, the longer Sephiroth had been here and stayed sane, the more hopeful it might be that he wouldn't go insane again. Not having Hojo's lab here and all the files on him would probably help as well, along with Genesis and Angeal. It was all going to be fine...right?
Genesis stated that he thought Sephiroth liked Zack more that he let on and Zack had to refrain from beaming. It always made him happy when people liked him, even more so when it was someone with so little emotion. "That's good to hear. All I did really was try to lighten his mood, so I guess it worked." Then he had to go and die and Sephiroth went crazy. Maybe he had helped more than he thought.
Scratching the back of his head, he looked at the floor. "Yeah, about that. She knows Sephiroth. Apparently her, Cloud and a group of them fought and defeated him after he went completely crazy." He was sure Genesis didn't know Tifa, so he didn't mention her. Taking another drink, he continued on. "And apparently she's already seen him here. And told him, well, everything that happened. Though from the sound of it, he didn't believe her." That was a plus, right?
So Genesis didn't know who Aerith was. Or at least, he didn't know her name. "She was an Ancient, the last of them it sounded like. Hojo had her and her mother held hostage, but they broke free. Her mother died though and Aerith lived in the Sector Five slums with a lady who took her in and raised her." Maybe that would ring a bell? Then again, Hojo experimented on a lot of different stuff, so maybe not.
"Hey! I'll be just fine, thank you very much. I did make it to First Class after all, I've got this!" Did he forget that if he drank a lot he would have to add in being drunk to all of this? Not at all, but he had all the confidence in himself. Loveless was quoted again, and it honestly just confused Zack. Downing his drink, he quickly went over and got more for the both of them. "So do we just head out there then, or do we have to check in with someone?"
"Uh, yeah. They gave us weapons..." Zack said in a small voice. They way she put, he started to feel like the bad guy here. "Now that I can see the bigger picture, they really were just using us as weapons. We felt like we were the good guys who were stopping the bad guys, but in reality, we were just pawns." Honestly, the whole thing made him pretty angry. "I guess I did. I just wanted to be a hero and help people." How could he have been so stupid?
When Yuffie mentioned that he could make it up to her, his eyes widened. "You're not going to send me on more treasure hunts, are you?" Though he gotten some extra training with her treasure hunt missions, it had all been pretty exhausting. Not something he was too excited to repeat. Then again, being a mercenary was just that, so he didn't have much room to object. It was his job now after all.
Zack shook his head. "Not a sword like this. This one is pretty special." He wasn't sure she even knew who Angeal was, so he left it at that for now unless she wanted a better explanation. "Yeah, he was pretty attached to Tifa, so I'm glad she was there to help him" Yuffie's next line of logic really didn't make much sense, but he wasn't about to burst her bubble. "A weird way of doing, but that's great you were so helpful." Yeah Zack, feeding her ego is a great idea...
"Yup! I met Aerith when I fell through the roof of the church in Sector Five, Cloud was a infantryman, and Tifa was a tour guide when we went to Nibelheim for a mission." It was a little strange they knew all the same people, but he didn't mind! "Damn. It's all so crazy. I'm glad we're all here now, even though it's not home to us." Home is where the heart is, right?
Zack's eyes widened again. "Please don't say Jenova as a plural. I really don't want to imagine more of that." He got the chills just thinking of it. Even though he didn't have to fight it personally, it still wasn't a great thought. "The Dragonblades? What is that? I'll admit, I'm a little hesitant to join any organization right now. Besides, I'm able to do whatever I want, and go where I need to and want to. Can't get much better than that!" Traveling was always fun, and he liked to be helpful.
It had been quite some time since Zack had woken up here, and his memory of his old life was slowly fading. He obviously remembered the big things, but the little things were getting harder and harder. He would never forget his parents, but he was getting used to his new life. There wasn't any fighting, not that he knew of anyways. No mad scientists, no Shinra, no war. It was peaceful now, and he had even had a good time with Genesis. He never thought that could ever happen.
Zack had hoped that he would have run into Cloud or Angeal by now, but to quote Loveless "the fates are cruel", or something like that. He had heard it a bunch, but it never really stuck into his head too well. Then again, he hadn't really gone looking for them either, so he really wasn't in a position to complain about not seeing them yet. Which is why he had finally gotten out of Sonora and started looking!
Okay, his search ended up on Genesis and now he was still somewhere on the mountain. He hadn't really gotten too far. He definitely planned on going further but some familiar silver hair caught his eye and he sprinted in that direction. He had just gotten there when Sephiroth...went up a tree. "Hey buddy. Whatcha doin' up there?" Zack was the only who had the guts to greet a war hero like that.
Not only was it Zack's personality to do that, but he was also trying to make sure the mood was light. Sephiroth was indeed a ticking time bomb, and he and the other First Class boys had no idea what was going to happen. Though in this world, there was no Jenova. Sephiroth could still get angry about how he came to be, so it was best to try not to talk about and keep the conversation as positive as possbile. Which was easy for Zack.
Zack scratched the back of his head. "No, I won't yell at him. I will let him know that I wasn't all to happy to do what I did though." Honestly, it was probably going to make Angeal feel worse, but Zack would follow that up with telling him he knows why it had to happen and he didn't hold it against him. Of course he would end with the fact that they were here now and it was time to put the past behind them and try to figure out this new world they were in.
"Yeah! I'm not sure if he actually liked me, but he never got mad at me or anything. I think I even saw him chuckle a few times." Zack had a way of making just about anyone laugh, even if half the time it was at him. Sephiroth was no exception to that, no matter how short and hidden the laugh was, Zack knew it had happened at least once. He and Sephiroth had at least get along after the other two were no longer around, but Sephiroth wouldn't remember that part. Probably a good thing too.
No one could refuse hot chocolate! Especially when it had alcohol in it! Genesis took the cup and Zack was glad to see a small smile. Maybe this new world would do them all some good. Zack of course missed his parents, but it seemed as though everyone else he cared about was here, so he really wasn't all that upset. Gongaga would still be home, but it was time to spread his wings and fly on! ...Maybe not the best phrase to use around Genesis...
Loveless again, and it was sort of an apology? Maybe? He was going to take it as one anyways and look to moving forward. "Well, she's not from Midgar, but during one of my missions with Angeal, I ran into a little Wutai girl. She was trying to defend the place, so I pretended she defeated me. She's all grown up now and in this world." And she had not changed much, that was for sure. "I, uh, also found Aerith. Once. Haven't seen her since but I'm sure she's just trying to get her footing in this new place."
Zack wasn't too sure Genesis even knew who Aerith was, but she had been an Ancient so he could? Even if Zack had told him about her, he doubted Genesis paid much attention to him. Taking a drink, Zack almost choked on it. "I kind of forgot the alcohol in it was mint, but it tastes really good!" It's Zack, he definitely just chugged it.
Zack was always looking on the bright side, much to the annoyance of some people around him. It was a good thing and a bad thing honestly. Ignoring the bad and looking to the good meant Zack never really addressed anything that happened, but luckily bottling things up had never ended badly for him. His way of thinking kept him pushing forward because to him, there was no use in holding onto the bad. Unless it was really bad. Strictly speaking, the conflict between him and Genesis had been pretty bad, but he knew it wasn't Gen's fault.
When Genesis brought up the memory of Angeal dying, Zack looked at the floor. That had been one of the worst days of his life. He looked up to Angeal, he was basically an older brother. He knew why Angeal had done it, but it hadn't made it any better. "I'll let him when I see him. I think it'll be good for both of us." He didn't if he saw him, he said when. He was going to see him, he would make sure of it.
"Yeah, I've run into a couple people, which has been weird." Seeing Aerith and an older Yuffie had been a whirlwind, but he was glad to have gotten the full story of what happened after he died. "They think they're helping, and they might be. We just have to keep an eye on him. I'll help if you need me to, though I'm not sure if I'll make it worse or better." From what he gathered, Sephiroth wouldn't harbor bad feelings towards himself, so he might be helpful?
"I probably should, since I've never done it before." Genesis was then quoting Loveless again, and it honestly made Zack relax a little bit more. It did bring back horrible memories, but it also brought up good ones, ones from before everything went down the drain.
"Awe man, I love hot chocolate. I've never tried it with liquor, sounds interesting." Zack nearly sprinted over to get himself one before Genesis spoke again. Zack wasn't sure if he should laugh at that or walk away slowly, but he decided to chuckle. "Yeah, that was probably it. Not a good idea to hold a sword and alcohol at the same time. Want another? Never mind, you don't have a choice!" Zack quickly went over and got the drinks and returned, handing one to Genesis with a grin.
Zack scratched the back of head. "Well yeah, at first anyways. They really did take good care of us. We got paid well, always had medical attention when we needed it for nothing extra. Things started adding up after a while, so I guess they were just hiding the shady things." Really shady things honestly. As he listened to Yuffie, he realized that he had never really stopped to think about the other side. "Yeah, I guess I never realized that Shinra might have been the problem. I'm sorry." He did feel bad.
Wait, he has the Buster Sword too!? "Well that's freaky, both of us having the sword." Then she was explaining everything. It was hard to follow along with, and it all sounded absurd, but he believed her. Mako poisoning was a crazy thing, and Zack had basically said his legacy was Cloud's now. Well, his friend listened. Too well. "Dang, poor guy had it rough. Glad he had people to help him through it though."
"Yeah, Cloud never made it to SOLDIER, also he would get pretty motion sick too. Looks like you guys had that in common." He was glad that the Sephiroth here now wasn't the one that Cloud and his friends had fought. Though, he was also hoping that it wouldn't happen on Zephon. Maybe with Genesis and Angeal around it could be prevented. Or be worse. Because Genesis.
Zack still couldn't believe Sephiroth had killed Aerith, but he had gone crazy so that was that. "Yeah, I know Aerith. I helped her build a flower cart before everything went haywire. I met up with her here once, but haven't seen her since." He wasn't sure of his feelings for Aerith. Of course he still cared about her, but so much had happened since then. He needed to focus on himself for a little bit before addressing anything else.
"Oh I defintely don't plan on doing that. I'm a mercenary now, just helping those I can and doing my own thing." He watched as she showed her "skills" and couldn't help but laugh. "I don't want that! I'll be good, I swear." It was good seeing Yuffie now, especially since she was older and he could talk to her about more than he could when she was a kid. She had been through a lot as well, and he could relate to her more.
It seemed as though Genesis was equally as surprised to see Zack as he was of him, just as the last time they had met. It would seem Genesis wasn't as happy about it as Zack was, though Zack didn't pay attention, or really even notice that part. Genesis was then quoting Loveless, which honestly just confused Zack to the point he didn't catch that it was a quote of disdain towards him being there. "Aw man, I haven't heard you quote that book in a long time. Brings back old memories." Of course not good ones, but Zack wasn't going to dwell on that!
When Genesis mentioned how life at home was, Zack also sunk down a little lower. He had honestly forgot that there had been a lot of conflict between the other three SOLDIERs before they all met their fate, and now they were all together again. "I'm sorry to hear about that man. I'm sure Angeal will come around, he's a good guy. Sephiroth doesn't remember anything? Oh man, that could be a ticking time bomb." He was locked in a mako pod for four years, gunned down by Shinra, and he still didn't have it as bad as the other three did.
Zack was just about to answer when Genesis answered himself. Zack's eyes lit up. "I decided to travel a bit and just ended up here. There's a snowboarding tournament!? That I have to check out! I'm sure it continues tomorrow, since it's pretty dark out now?" Zack looked around and it seemed everyone had left the mountain and were either in the lobby somewhere, or checked in for the night.
Shaking his head, he smiled at Genesis. "Oddly enough, no I have not. Seems fun though." It definitely did sound like something he would do, so he would see about entering in the morning. Looking at Gen's cup, Zack tilted his head. "Whatcha drinkin'?" Apple cider seemed like something Genesis would drink, but just about everyone liked hot chocolate. Did Zack need to try hot chocolate and peppermint liquor? Probably not.
Zack had not expected this to come from his day. He was always excited to see someone from his old world here, and to see someone he hadn't seen in a while as well? Bonus! It occured to him as well that working for Shinra had taken up a lot of his time. He hadn't been able to help Aerith with her flower cart that much, hadn't been able to help Yuffie. What kind of SOLDIER couldn't help people!? Oh wait, one that was sent on missions and then kidnapped for four years. That kind...
"Yeah, so much for the "company that takes care of its employees". One of them kidnapped me, and then I was reported kill in action, and then I really was killed in action. What an adventure." Honestly, he wasn't effected that she didn't really bat an eye when he said he was murdered. It was water under the bridge now, and he'd rather just move on and forget about it anyways.
When she told him to wait as the wheels in her brain turned, he blinked at her. She then mentioned Cloud, and Zack was a little confused at first. How did she know that? When she asked if he was the same Zack Cloud knew, he gave a nod. "Yeah! You know him? Ah man, he was a good guy. Poor guy got a bad case of mako poisoning. He was also there when I got shot, though I swear I gave him the Buster Sword, but yet, I still have it." Maybe he left it?
"Is that like, fun-sized for ninjas? I like it!" Of course he remembered her, but she had been just a kid when they met, so a lasting impression wasn't really something for an adult to have of a kid. She had been the highlight during his mission in Wutai, and her calls for help had been a fun distraction, so she was a little more memorable than most kids.
During her story, Zack had to blink a few times. It was a lot, really fast. "Yeah, I met Tifa once during a mission to Nibelheim, she was our tour guide I think." Wait, Cait Sith? Who was that? "Damn, Sephiroth really went that far? Last I saw him, he was stealing a weird head from a tank. He stabbed Tifa, and then myself. Then Cloud went after him, but that was all I remember before waking up in a tank." Things really progressed.
"It's okay, it's in the past now. I'm starting new here and hoping it goes better than my last life. Or the continuation of my current life? I'm with ya on that whole thing, I have no idea what's going on." He really didn't, but he was here now, and he was going to make the best of it.
