"Ninety-seven. Ninety-eight. Ninety-nine. One hundred." If you guessed that Zack was doing squats, you'd be absolutely correct. It was part of his morning routine, so honestly, it's not hard to know that. Stepping into the shower was next, and it was usually pretty quick since Zack never wanted to lose any daylight. Not like he really ever had much of anything important to do, but he always wanted to be ready, just in case.
Making his way into the town from his little "home" on the outskirts, he waved at just about everyone he walked by. Since he had arrived in Zephon, he had made himself a home in Torensten. After helping an old lady out, she let him live in a room of a hotel she owned in exchange he helped her out around the place. Of course, he still took odd jobs here and there to buy things he needed. He still paid her a little bit, on the off chance there wasn't anything for him to help her with.
Over time, he had helped out quite a lot of people and was starting to be well known in the town. If you knew Zack like you think you do from how he starts his day, you would know that this was to be expected. If he hadn't helped you out, well then you probably chatted with him a time or two, or at least overheard him once or twice. The man was not a quiet one. Needless to say, he was well liked in Torensten.
Today, he was helping hang a store sign for a new clothing store that was opening up. Nothing like standing on a ladder, holding a heavy object to start the day! After he and another guy double checked it was secure, they made their way down and stood back to observe their work. Of course, Zack never really looked where he was going, and ran into someone. "Oh snap, I'm sorry! I wasn't watching, are you okay?" He turned around, but there was no way he knew her.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
A ninja, obviously, had super sharp senses. Yuffie had been trained basically from birth to always take in her environment. To be ready for anything! She had senses like a fox! Like a fox who was also a ninja! Nobody ever got the drop on her! She was RAZOR SHARP and super cool.
In her defence, she had been too busy thinking about how she was always alert to actually always be alert which is why she walked into the guy she didn't see. Besides! Maybe it was a cool, swish pick pocket move! She was a thief, after all. She could steal! YOU didn't know. Okay, so the fact that she hadn't stolen anything was beside the point, and the fact that she bounced off the towering guy to land on her backside also probably didn't do her any favours.
"Ohf! Watch where you're going guy!" Yuffie said on reflex, despite all of her thoughts about how she totally did that intentionally and was an absolute badass honest. She peered up, for a moment spotting those blue eyes, and the giant sword, and for just a moment, she thought-
Cloud.
Except, no. Then she saw the black hair. This wasn't Cloud. It was...
The memories came crashing back unexpectedly. Childhood memories of messing with a SOLDIER guy, that, if she was entirely honest, she'd ended up liking. He used to play with her when she wanted to play games, she was pretty sure, and he had always been sweet and kind when she messed with him. She'd had a lot of fun with him. Truthfully, Yuffie had thought her memories had gotten a bit jumbled; she had just been a kid after all, when she remembered him looking so much like Cloud. Cloud was a SOLDIER (well, no he wasn't, but she had THOUGHT he was a SOLDIER when they first met), and so was this guy, so maybe her thoughts had just gotten jumbled?
But now she saw him, clear as day, she remembered him. He really was exactly like Cloud. Except way more fun. His name came back to her in an instance.
"Uncle Zack!" she exclaimed, before cold horror hit her at what she had just said. A lonely child, in truth, Yuffie might have been Godo's daughter, but she was largely seen as a problem child around Wutai. Always wanting to run off and have adventures and fight for Wutai, even after the war had ended, she mostly grew up alone. Of course, it didn't help that the grown ups were always slightly nervous around her, being their leader's daughter and all. Nobody ever really played with Yuffie or went along with her childish schemes. Until Zack. And yes, maybe super privately in her head she sometimes thought of him as 'Uncle Zack' but she'd never ever ever say it out loud.
Until now. Accidentally.
"Uh, I said.... 'Um, cool, Zack,' nothing else," she said quickly, before scrambling to her feet and dusting herself off. "Wow. It's really you. I thought you were dead or something. You just vanished and like, stopped replying to my e-mails totally, which was RUDE, by the way," she remarked. Her e-mails which were always scams to lure him out to a place so that she could find some treasure by getting him to get rid of the monsters for her. That scheme had stopped working when he dropped off the face of the planet.
"None of the other SOLDIERs would even answer me! You were the only fun one to mess with!" she pouted. "You remember me, right? It's Yuffie!" she beamed proudly. "It's, um, it's been a while!" she added. "I actually DID save all of Wutai, since we last met! Well, kinda. Shinra fell apart and I was there, so, totally counts. Plus I saved the world! Are ya proud of me!?" she beamed, not quite aware of how transparently she was seeking approval.
Zack felt really bad, he didn't like to hurt people that hadn't done anything or weren't an evil people that weren't out to get him. Especially a petite female that instantly fell to the ground because he was decently big guy. Not a tank like Angeal, but he was pretty close. The girl snapped back at him and held his hands up. "I'm so sorry, let me help you up." Holding out a hand, he finally got a good look at her, and it seemed she had done the same because she called him Uncle Zack.
Boy was he dumbfounded. He had no siblings, so there was no one to give him nieces and nephews. Before his brain could continue processing what she had actually said, she changed it. Well now he was even more confused, even though that wasn't really that hard with Zack sometimes. Once she stood up and he could really see her face, it hit him. She was a lot older now, but it was the same girl he had run into in Wutai and his face lit up.
"Of all the places to run into you again! Yeah, I did die, gunned down by Shinra ironically, but then I ended up here so there's that." She was then snapping at him and he threw his hands up. "Hey now! I'm sorry! I got locked in a mako pod for years and then yeah, dead." He scratched the back of his neck. He wasn't going to lie though, with everything that had gone on, he had completely spaced that he used to help her out.
"Yeah, that's not a shocker, they rarely answered me." The other First Class SOLDIERs weren't much for fun, or conversating. Unless it was Genesis and Loveless. Yuffie! That was her name. No, he didn't forget at all. "I remember, the little ninja from Wutai!" He listened to her and gave her a huge smile. "Oh wow, that's amazing Yuffie! All by yourself?" He had no idea what had happened after he died. No idea that Yuffie had met Aerith and Cloud.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie had scrambled to her feet with her usual boundless energy, despite Zack's offer to help, but she stopped, looking surprised as he explained the situation. So, he had died, and now he was here? Just like Sephiroth! It seemed sometimes people died, then came to Zephron. Not all the time though! Not Yuffie. She was clearly still alive. Sure, when she had come here, meteor had been about to hit. And the Lifestream had been coming out to stop it, and that was totally going to work, and everything was gonna be fine.
Riiiiight?
"Told ya Shinra were the bad guys!" she said proudly at the news he had been murdered by his own troops. Which, uh, okay, maybe she shouldn't have been so happy about.
"Wait, wait," Yuffie said, something suddenly triggering in her brain. "Wait. Waaaaaaaait," she held up a hand, as she unravelled a mysterious puzzle. "You got locked in a pod for years, and then shot by Shinra, and Cloud got locked in a pod for years, with some guy named Zack, who then got shot by Shinra, aaaaand-" Suddenly, her eyes lit up. "Oh my god! Are you the same Zack Cloud knew!?" she asked.
What? Nobody had ever ACTUALLY specified that before!
"Hey! I wasn't little! I was sneak attack sized!" Yuffie protested as he remembered her. Although she had thought of him much more fondly to just be remembered as that 'little ninja' but she wouldn't admit that. He also seemed impressed by her story, although she wasn't sure he completely believed her.
"Weeeeell, I had some help, but I was totally in charge. Cloud helped out! You know him! And Tifa, who I think you might know but honestly Cloud's story had more holes in it than, like, Cait Sith's cover story so I'm not totally sure," she went on. "We had to stop Sephiroth, who I'm probably guessing you know too. He was trying to blow up the world, but it's okay, 'cause we kicked his butt!" Yuffie threw a few mock punches to show her kicking said butt with her enthusiasm.
And then she paused, realising that said enthusiasm was a bit awkward, since Zack was, y'know, telling her how he died and was locked away. "Um, sorry you got killed and were tortured and all that stuff," she said, scratching behind her head somewhat awkwardly. "But I'm glad you're alive again! Or still alive! Or maybe dead and this is the after-life. I dunno, this whole thing is weird!" she said cheerfully.
Zack had not expected this to come from his day. He was always excited to see someone from his old world here, and to see someone he hadn't seen in a while as well? Bonus! It occured to him as well that working for Shinra had taken up a lot of his time. He hadn't been able to help Aerith with her flower cart that much, hadn't been able to help Yuffie. What kind of SOLDIER couldn't help people!? Oh wait, one that was sent on missions and then kidnapped for four years. That kind...
"Yeah, so much for the "company that takes care of its employees". One of them kidnapped me, and then I was reported kill in action, and then I really was killed in action. What an adventure." Honestly, he wasn't effected that she didn't really bat an eye when he said he was murdered. It was water under the bridge now, and he'd rather just move on and forget about it anyways.
When she told him to wait as the wheels in her brain turned, he blinked at her. She then mentioned Cloud, and Zack was a little confused at first. How did she know that? When she asked if he was the same Zack Cloud knew, he gave a nod. "Yeah! You know him? Ah man, he was a good guy. Poor guy got a bad case of mako poisoning. He was also there when I got shot, though I swear I gave him the Buster Sword, but yet, I still have it." Maybe he left it?
"Is that like, fun-sized for ninjas? I like it!" Of course he remembered her, but she had been just a kid when they met, so a lasting impression wasn't really something for an adult to have of a kid. She had been the highlight during his mission in Wutai, and her calls for help had been a fun distraction, so she was a little more memorable than most kids.
During her story, Zack had to blink a few times. It was a lot, really fast. "Yeah, I met Tifa once during a mission to Nibelheim, she was our tour guide I think." Wait, Cait Sith? Who was that? "Damn, Sephiroth really went that far? Last I saw him, he was stealing a weird head from a tank. He stabbed Tifa, and then myself. Then Cloud went after him, but that was all I remember before waking up in a tank." Things really progressed.
"It's okay, it's in the past now. I'm starting new here and hoping it goes better than my last life. Or the continuation of my current life? I'm with ya on that whole thing, I have no idea what's going on." He really didn't, but he was here now, and he was going to make the best of it.
Yuffie just gaffawed a little when Zack commented on Shinra being the 'company that cared'. She just looked at Zack like he was a complete moron, and grinned. "You really BELIEVED that about Shinra? Y'know they started an entire war 'cause they wanted to build reactors, right? Tried to subti... subtog... subtigigate.... .... tried to beat a whole nation? Destroy all our culture? You know when you were runnin' around Wutai killin' all our soldiers? That whole war thing? We didn't start they! They're an Electric Company and they literally invaded us to try and take over. They were always the bad guys! You just never noticed," Yuffie pointed out, for once feeling like the smart one (despite her inability to pronounce 'subjugate').
"Oh yeah, Cloud totally had the same sword as you," Yuffie nodded, not that that answered anything. "Yeah, he figured it out eventually. See, he went all crazy after the mako poisoning and got better but then for some reason thought he was a First Class SOLDIER so went around telling everyone that. But it turns out he just thought he was, well, you, I guess. Then he kinda remembered and fell into the Lifestream and was in a wheelchair for a while and then Tifa stayed with him then he remembered and I was all like 'say whaaaat but you called me a liar' and then I was sick because we were on an airship, but, uh, that part's not really related to the story..." she said, trailing off. "Anyway, all the Mako poisoning gave him like SOLDIER powers. Or maybe 'cause he was injected to Sephiroth cells. I dunno. I wasn't really paying attention and it got SUPER complicated, but Sephiroth could control him for some reason and they had this whole rivalry thing goin' on," she went on, waving a vague hand at the weirdness.
"Actually, that was SUPER weird. Sephiroth could control Cloud except when we all went to beat him up he didn't bother. Wonder why that was..." Yuffie said thoughtfully, and then shrugged. "Oh well."
"Yeah, Sephiroth went SUPER far. He went to live in the Northern Crater and summoned meteor, and he had sqwuicky Jenova clones of himself running around. He killed lotsa people, including Aerith, who was totally a friend of mine," she paused, still sad by that. "But she's alive again now here like you are so it's okay!" she added, beaming a smile. Of course, Yuffie had no idea that Zack knew Aerith too.
"Well, just don't go workin' for any new evil corporations," Yuffie advised Zack at his new life in Zephron. "Else I'll hafta kick your butt! And I can do it this time, 'cause I'm totally an adult now and even more badass than I used to be!" she announced, throwing a few air punches just to demonstrate.
Zack scratched the back of head. "Well yeah, at first anyways. They really did take good care of us. We got paid well, always had medical attention when we needed it for nothing extra. Things started adding up after a while, so I guess they were just hiding the shady things." Really shady things honestly. As he listened to Yuffie, he realized that he had never really stopped to think about the other side. "Yeah, I guess I never realized that Shinra might have been the problem. I'm sorry." He did feel bad.
Wait, he has the Buster Sword too!? "Well that's freaky, both of us having the sword." Then she was explaining everything. It was hard to follow along with, and it all sounded absurd, but he believed her. Mako poisoning was a crazy thing, and Zack had basically said his legacy was Cloud's now. Well, his friend listened. Too well. "Dang, poor guy had it rough. Glad he had people to help him through it though."
"Yeah, Cloud never made it to SOLDIER, also he would get pretty motion sick too. Looks like you guys had that in common." He was glad that the Sephiroth here now wasn't the one that Cloud and his friends had fought. Though, he was also hoping that it wouldn't happen on Zephon. Maybe with Genesis and Angeal around it could be prevented. Or be worse. Because Genesis.
Zack still couldn't believe Sephiroth had killed Aerith, but he had gone crazy so that was that. "Yeah, I know Aerith. I helped her build a flower cart before everything went haywire. I met up with her here once, but haven't seen her since." He wasn't sure of his feelings for Aerith. Of course he still cared about her, but so much had happened since then. He needed to focus on himself for a little bit before addressing anything else.
"Oh I defintely don't plan on doing that. I'm a mercenary now, just helping those I can and doing my own thing." He watched as she showed her "skills" and couldn't help but laugh. "I don't want that! I'll be good, I swear." It was good seeing Yuffie now, especially since she was older and he could talk to her about more than he could when she was a kid. She had been through a lot as well, and he could relate to her more.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
"Medical attention? For nothing extra!?" Yuffie repeated, her eyes wide with completely exaggerated shock. "You mean they patched up their murder soldiers so they could do more murdering for free? Oh my god, did they, I dunno, give you weapons to do murdering with too? What great employers!" Yuffie's sarcasm was so heavy she couldn't help but roll her eyes at the end. "You were a soldier! Of COURSE they patched you up! You know, in MOST socities, like, I dunno, WUTAI, it's generally not considered a selling point that hey, it's okay, you don't have to pay to NOT DIE here," Yuffie pointed out. Yuffie was, she would even admit herself, a bit of a brat, but even she wouldn't fall for Shinra's tricks. "They just treated you nicely so you wouldn't notice, or care, about all the, y'know, TOTAL EVIL they do. And you fell for it, hook, line and sinker!" Yuffie pointed out.
Still, at least he seemed to be doing better now. He realised the errors of his ways.
"Yeah, well, you know now. And you can make it up to me," she replied, not being one to turn down a potential future favour.
"Yeah, I mean, maybe he just bought one like it? I mean, lots of places sell swords, right?" she suggested to explain why Cloud had the same sword. It was possible right. "Yeah, he was pretty messed up in the head for a while. Tifa stayed with him to help him through it, but, I bet he wouldn't have recovered so easily if it wasn't for me! I mean, I'd just kiiiiiinda stolen all their materia and they'd forgiven me so I guess Cloud knew we'd forgive him for all the lies n' stuff," Yuffie decided. What? She might as well take credit for it!
"Wait. Wait. Waaaaait. You know Aerith too? And Cloud? And Tifa? And me?" Yuffie asked, blinking a little. "Wow, it IS a crazy small world! Or was. I dunno if Zephron is bigger or smaller," she remarked. And then she paused. "Well, I... I um, I guess, I'm.. sorry. But she died. Then again, so did you. And now you're both alive again. So, I dunno what's going on," Yuffie admitted, her tone a little more solemn, but she still felt she owed it to Zack somehow to at least tell him the truth about Aerith's passing.
"Don't laugh at me, I mean it," Yuffie said, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at him. "I beat all sorts of people! Including Weapons and Sephiroth and Jenovas and all kinds of stuff," she explained. And then she paused. "So, what? You just, like, bum around Zephron, taking jobs for money? That sucks! You should come work for the Dragonblades! We basically do that except it's a proper organisation and I'm totally in charge except when I let Caius pretend he's in charge," Yuffie suggested eagerly with a big grin.
"Uh, yeah. They gave us weapons..." Zack said in a small voice. They way she put, he started to feel like the bad guy here. "Now that I can see the bigger picture, they really were just using us as weapons. We felt like we were the good guys who were stopping the bad guys, but in reality, we were just pawns." Honestly, the whole thing made him pretty angry. "I guess I did. I just wanted to be a hero and help people." How could he have been so stupid?
When Yuffie mentioned that he could make it up to her, his eyes widened. "You're not going to send me on more treasure hunts, are you?" Though he gotten some extra training with her treasure hunt missions, it had all been pretty exhausting. Not something he was too excited to repeat. Then again, being a mercenary was just that, so he didn't have much room to object. It was his job now after all.
Zack shook his head. "Not a sword like this. This one is pretty special." He wasn't sure she even knew who Angeal was, so he left it at that for now unless she wanted a better explanation. "Yeah, he was pretty attached to Tifa, so I'm glad she was there to help him" Yuffie's next line of logic really didn't make much sense, but he wasn't about to burst her bubble. "A weird way of doing, but that's great you were so helpful." Yeah Zack, feeding her ego is a great idea...
"Yup! I met Aerith when I fell through the roof of the church in Sector Five, Cloud was a infantryman, and Tifa was a tour guide when we went to Nibelheim for a mission." It was a little strange they knew all the same people, but he didn't mind! "Damn. It's all so crazy. I'm glad we're all here now, even though it's not home to us." Home is where the heart is, right?
Zack's eyes widened again. "Please don't say Jenova as a plural. I really don't want to imagine more of that." He got the chills just thinking of it. Even though he didn't have to fight it personally, it still wasn't a great thought. "The Dragonblades? What is that? I'll admit, I'm a little hesitant to join any organization right now. Besides, I'm able to do whatever I want, and go where I need to and want to. Can't get much better than that!" Traveling was always fun, and he liked to be helpful.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie frowned a little at Zack, as he seemed to realise that perhaps he had never quite been the 'hero' he dreamed of. She paused for a moment, not quite sure if she felt sympathy, or something more resembling some deep seated anger she tried to hide. After all, how could anybody have believed they were being a 'hero' while invading Wutai? How could anybody have taken so much from her homeland and thought they were the good guy? But it seemed Zack really had never thought about it. He had never questioned it. "Guess that's you Shinra peeps for you. Always swallowing whatever they feed you. Meanwhile, the rest of us, who are actually SMART, could see all the lies," Yuffie boasted, deciding to settle for a mixture of sympathy AND bitterness. And of course a dash of unique Yuffie-ness. After all, she wasn't lying. Shinra's propaganda was so obviously transparent to her. She had no idea how Zack couldn't see it.
Of course, someone might say that Yuffie was equally blinded in believing Wutai had been so fantastic before the invasion, but Wutai HAD been great, she didn't care what anybody said!
"Not right now, nope!" she answered, although she started laughing to herself at the memory. "Wooow, you were so easy to trick! Actually, no wonder you fell for Shinra's lies. You fall for everything!" she laughed to herself. Yuffie had been so young then, and even then, she had managed to make Zack run all over the place for her. And usually allowing her to swoop in and steal whatever mattered first.
"Huh Weird," she remarked regarding the sword. "I guess, sometimes people show up, apparently from different times. I always thought people were just losing their memories, but if you come from an actual different time, I guess you could show up with YOUR sword, and Cloud could show up from his time with HIS sword, and it's the same sword? Whoa." Yuffie felt her eyes widen as she figured it out.
"You fell through a church roof? Cloud told me that's how he met Aerith. Maybe he was still thinking he was you?" Yuffie suggested. And then she frowned. "Except Aerith agreed. So... I dunno. Maybe that's just how you Shinra peeps like to meet each other. Is falling through church roofs like, a mating ritual for you or something?" she asked with a teasing shrug.
"Dragonblades! They're a mercenary group!" Yuffie explained. "I mean, you still get to do whatever you want. But I also get work. With, y'know, getting paid. Don't you need that? Ohhh, or did you turn into a thief?" she asked, grinning.
