[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]She finally settled into her new, well-earned home in Provo. The home needed more work, as it had been abandoned for some time, but it was her’s - not her families or her husbands. The thought of it made her feel a little proud and secure. Unlike Torensten, it was much more quiet and slower paced. The climate was more mild and full of seasons. There were less adventurers and more of a community and merchants that helped each other here. She walked along the canals, beautiful in the clear glow of the sun. The sight softened the heart as much as did the colorful fall colors of the event.
Banners of red, orange and gold filled the streets. Pumpkins, hay bales, and dolls made of corn silk lined the pathway. She could hear the giggles of children and the swell of live country music around the block. Though she had to side step a parade of goats through the streets. The smell was quite…country. It was not really to her liking. She believed she would admire the animals in the petting zoo from a distance. Just as she did the animals and fighters in Lindblum’s own festival.
She decided that perhaps the hustle and bustle of the festivities here were a bit much for her. She might enjoy herself better if she toured the orchards and partook in the unique flavors of Provo. She went to a booth to sign up for the Caravan of Ciders. As soon as she paid the fee, she looked up to see what their ride would be. A chocobo drawn cart, with hay bales for seats. People were already beginning to get in on the back. Oh dear. Good thing she picked a simpler dress to get dirtied today. She made her way to this makeshift transportation.
There was a festival, and Zack was pretty excited for it to begin. He had attended things like this before, both while working and not. Gongaga festivals were some of his favorite memories, and he was ready to have more. Deciding that his SOLDIER uniform wasn't really going to blend in, he decided to just go with a grey v-neck shirt and a pair of black slacks. Lacing up his boots, he made sure the Buster Sword was put away before heading out to Provo.
Over the last few months, Zack had finally figured out how to get from town to town, but still hadn't really learned what all was in each town, so he did get a bit lost trying to find where the festival was. When he finally found it, a smile emerged onto his face. It looked amazing and definitely reminded him of Gongaga. The music, the children running around, though the goats were new, and he had to resist the urge to try to pet them.
Though, what he couldn't resist was the petting zoo, and he didn't even care that he looked very odd being surrounded by children. Animals were amazing creatures, not to mention quite a bit of them were very soft. Who wouldn't want to pet them!? After a bit, he left the petting zoo and ended up heading towards the orchard. So there was cider tasting here? He never got to alcohol tasting in Gongaga due to always being too young, so this was his chance!
Fishing out some money, he paid the fee and walked over to the cart that they would be riding on, and once again had to resist the urge to pet the animal, this time being the chocobo that was putting the cart. He noticed a blonde woman heading towards the cart as well and hurried to get there before her, holding his hand out with a smile, intending on helping her up. He was raised to be a gentleman after all.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Apple Trees and Ciderffects”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]She was about to grab onto the railing and climb into the back of the cart, when she heard the sound of scurrying boots come towards her. She pulled her hands back to her chest to make sure they didn’t get stepped on when he jumped ahead of her. The cart bounced with his wait before finding its equilibrium. He could be a little more careful with others around and there was plenty of time to get on the cart without cutting ahead. Hilda felt a little irritated at the event.
But then, the man turned around to hold out a hand to her with a warm smile. She felt her irritation abate and a smile touch on her lips. Had he really done all that just to help her? Perhaps, her judgement had been hasty. She reached up to accept the offered hand. She used it as an anchor to pull herself up. “You have my thanks.” She said kindly to the polite treatment.
The cart lurched, as other people began to climb in behind them. She took back her hand from his. She smoothed out her skirt before looking for a comfortable spot to take a seat. The Lady Regent being reduced to enjoying herself in a cart sitting on a hay bale and unguarded. What would the others think of her now? She took her seat and looked across at the scene just outside the cart.
She was less enthused with the barn-like scent. It was warming to see everyone cheerful chatter among each other. Though, she felt a little alone, even if she was happy for the others.
“Alright. We will be shoving off soon. Everyone take a seat. Keep your hands and feet in the cart.” A middle-aged man in overalls and a plaid shirt closed up the cart’s gate behind them. He gave the group a wink. “My name is Albert. I will be your tour guide this evening. We will have five stops. Each stop will show different orchards and have a flight of tastings on the different ways the ciders are made. At the end, you will get to pick a bottle of your favorite one.”
He patted the cart, before moving to check the chocobos and their harness, before taking his own seat and the reins. The cart had a sudden tug forward, then they were going down the old dirt path.
Zack had good intentions at heart, he really did. How he executed them was another story. Of course he didn't look where he was going on his way to helping the lady into the cart, but there was no harm done, so he figured he was safe. He was thanked with a smile and he gave a nod. "It was my pleasure." First impressions were everything, at least to some people. Though Zack knew how to take a bad first impression and turn it around as well. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who really did not like him. Even Genesis didn't absolutely hate him.
Taking a seat across from her, a smile never left his face. It was just like he was back in Gongaga, take a hay ride to go out to some of the fields to farm food for the month. Everything brought back fond memories, from the bumpy road to the questionable smells. The only difference was that Zack was now too big to be able to just run around on the cart and he had to sit down. That didn't stop him from moving his head and upper body around to make sure he was able to look at everything he could.
The tour guide began talking and Zack listened in. He was going to taste the alcohol this time! When he was younger, he was definitely not able to do that. He would have to remind himself to take it easy though, he didn't want to go too hard in front of all these people. Looking over to the lady he had helped, he noticed she wasn't talking to anyone. "Is this your first festival here?"
Zack knew some people just didn't like talking to people they didn't know, but how could you get to know someone if you didn't talk to them? That was his theory anyways. Zack was the perfect person to have a conversation with, unless you were talking about science or anything like that. Then he was at a loss but would certainly try his best.

[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]He was quite a jovial young man as he energetically took his seat across from her. It reminded her of her husband when he was in his excited throws of engineering work. He never seemed to stop moving then. But, this person in front of her seemed genuinely excited about well…everything around him. Was it the weather or the hayride? Or was he always this vibrant?
She sat up properly on the edge of the haystack. Her hands crossed gently in her lap. She looked over the edge of the moving cart. The wind blew and she could hear the rustling of the leaves in the apple trees. It carried it’s delicate scent and she simply enjoyed it. It was quite a lovely sight to behold. Even if the ride itself was a little bumpy on this dirt road.
Then, the young man suddenly stopped his innocent wonder at everything, and took notice of her again. She turned from the gazing at the orchards to view Zack staring at her. She saw him smiling at her waiting for a reply to his questions. “It is my first festival here.” She said kindly to him. “Is it your first?” She supposed if she was going to be on a ride with a group it was polite to not keep to herself. “Where I was from, the festivals of the regency were a little different. One’s to test the skill of hunters.” She smiled, suddenly missing Lindblum.
“In truth, I have not been in Provo long. It is all new to me.” During her time here, events had progressed more quickly than they had in Torensten. “I figured this tour would acquaint me with what it has to offer.” At least in its flavors and agriculture. So far, it seemed like a nice quiet town when not in festival season.
There really wasn't much that didn't make Zack happy. He was one to enjoy everything life had to offer. Even when he and Cloud were on the run, he still found ways to keep the mood light, even if the blonde couldn't hear him. He liked to believe his words made it through anyways, even though he was probably wrong. Zack didn't mind though, he liked being the one people could go to for a pick-me-up. He was a very good listener, even if sometimes he didn't have the best advice to offer.
When the woman answered him, he gave a nod. "Mine too." He listened as she told him about her home and he raised his eyebrows. "Oh wow, that sounds interesting. Did anyone ever get hurt?" That reminded him of when he would train with Angeal, and hear about when the other three trained together. Of course it was mostly all simulation, but there were still injuries.
"Yeah, me too. I've been staying in Torensten, but I decided to take a chance and see other places." The way she was sitting and speaking, he was starting to think she was from a high class family. Of course, he wasn't going to say anything about it. He just had to act cool and not say anything stupid. Of course, that was something Zack had a hard time doing sometimes.
Looking out into the orchards, he gave a small smile. "It reminds me of my home. We had hay rides like this all the time. They would take us to the farms to get food, or out to visit friends on their lands. The town wasn't very big, but a lot of the people lived on the outskirts. When festivals or any other gatherings would happen, the town would be packed. It was crazy." It was nice to remember a time before his world got turned upside down.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Apple Trees and Ciderffects”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Zack asked her if people ever got hurt. “Of course. That is the nature of the hunt.” She stated simply. When one ventured for a fight, it was only logical to expect few injuries. It was not her favorite Lindblum tradition, but it was still a time-honored one. “To reduce injuries, the town was evacuated, except for the competing hunters. Viewers watch from the safety of bridges. Monsters are released and the hunters show off their skill.” She smiled at the thought, suddenly feeling a little homesick. “White mages and healers are always on standby during the event.” It would be reckless otherwise.
She tilted her head to the side about him seeing other places. “Provo is quite far from Torensten. What made you take the trek all the way here?” Traveling was not as convenient to her as it had been on Gaia. At least there she had her own private airship. Now she had to take more common means. Then she softened at his words that it reminded him of home. “Perhaps you will meet those same people here. Create something new with new friends.” She said gently, before following his gaze back to the orchard. It was full of bright yellow-green apples. It was certainly fall.
The tour guide was already slowing the cart to a stop as he explained the apples. “There are Dabinett apples. If you were to bite into one, you may instantly spit it out. Hence why they are affectionately named spitters. ” He gave a loud laugh at the thought. “Imagine kids coming to steal these apples, only to find they are awfully bitter to snack on. Good for us adults, they make a very delicious full-body and flavorful cider when used by masters of the craft.”
The cart slowed to a stop in front of a wooden booth. A person was there to hand out samples of their cider here. The guide slowly got off his horse to open the back tail gate for them. “The crops do not yield as much as others, but the flavor is worth it. It smells very bright and floral.” The tail gate dropped and others began to excitedly exit the vehicle in order to get a good tasting of this cider.
Hilda waited patiently for them to exit, before getting up to exit herself. There was not a rush, was there?
As she explained the events, Zack listened. It sounded pretty cool to him actually. "That's a really cool way to do it, I wonder if they have something like that here." It sounded like a really cool training event as well as one to show off personal skills. "We had simulation rooms to train with, but facing off with others in front of people sounds more fun." If you were being watched, you'd want to prove yourself not only to your trainers, but other people as well. A lot more pressure, but a lot more experience as well.
"I guess a sense of adventure. I don't really like to stay in one spot for too long, and going on a long journey isn't anything new to me." At least this time he wasn't on the run while escorting another person who was out of it. Her next statement made him beam. "That's what I'm hoping! I've found one other from my own world, and I'm always game to meet other people. So I'm on the move!" He made a mental note to try to tone it down around people he didn't know, but the thought of finding his friends was exciting!
The tour guide started talking, and even though he said they tasted terrible, Zack had to stop himself from wanting to go and eat one. It was one of those 'don't knock it until you try it' things. He had been one of those kids that picked the wrong fruit and regretted it, once or twice. Back then, he wondered why people would still grow things like that if it tasted terrible, but the tour guides next statement answered the question he had. That made sense.
As people started to unload, he waited. When it was just her and Lady Hilda left, he got off and offered a hand to her with a smile. "Ready to go taste some cider? One of the events of my past festivals I was not allowed to take part in." The infamous Zack Fair smile was plastered on his face. He was pretty excited for this.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Apple Trees and Ciderffects”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]She lowered her eyes humbly as he stated it was ‘cool’. If she accepted, would it not be the same as bragging? She silently took his remarks at face value. Though, the term simulation room caused her to shake her head in not understanding. “I know not what a simulation room is, so I shall take your word for it.” She said courteously in response.
So, he had an adventurous spirit. Seemed young men enjoyed traveling wherever they can go. “Then I wish you safe travels. And when you need reprieve, find your friends for comfort and stability. Everyone needs a home to rest.” She said gently and smiled at him. “If you found one, I am sure you will find more.” She sounded confident on the matter.
She waited patiently for the others to get off the cart, then she stood up to leave. Zack was there to help her off the cart. It seemed he was taking a liking to being friendly with her. Her perhaps he was just friendly in general. She smiled back and took his hand of assistance off the cart. “I certainly hope I am ready. It is what I signed up for.” She said lightly before turning to go to the booth.
The booth held some business cards with information about this cider on the back of them. Hilda took one. Then she was handed a cup by a young lady with a big smile on her face. Hilda nodded her gratitude and took the plastic cup. This was a new experience for her to take from stands. She smelled the crisp apple and florals from the cup. The taste was impeccable with sweet apple with a smokey undertone. Then as it sat on the tongue it tasted of cinnamon and full red apples. She savored it as the girl handed her a bit of pork sausage to be paired with it. It paired well together.
When she stated she didn't know what a simulation room was, Zack had to think about how to describe it. Let's face it, he wasn't very good at explaining things sometimes. "Well it's basically a fake scenario. You're put in a certain room or area that's not really there and you can battle freely without the worry of destroying things." Okay, that was decent explanation and he hoped he did well with it. If not, he would try to go into further as well.
Zack couldn't lie, the next thing she said almost had him in tears. He had never been told to have safe travels, mostly he was just told to not be reckless because that's usually how he did things. She didn't know him that well, so that was probably why she was being kind about it. "Thanks, I wish the same to you. Have you met anyone from your world yet?" He realized that they had talked a bit about him, but not about her.
Giving a smile at her remark, he turned to follow her to the booth. Also taking a business card, he shoved it in his pocket. He wasn't sure if he would ever really need it since cider wasn't his drink of choice, but it would be good to have for an occasion that could pop up. He wasn't much for alcohol at all really, but if he were to drink, he would get some beers with the others. That didn't happen since they were all usually busy.
As he took his cup, he shot a wink at at the lady at the booth, who blushed. Zack had a charm, and he knew it. His positive nature and friendly attitude made it hard for anyone to not like him, even if they were annoyed by him. Taking a drink, he stared into the cup. He hadn't been sure of what he was going to think of the taste, but partnered with the pork sausage, he was delighted. "Man, I was missing out in Gongaga. This is really good."
