When the man with the machine gun-blade had left to engage with other contestants, Caius smiled lightly as Keimusho approached. When he asked about Vordun though, Caius frowned lightly. "Dragons attacked Torensten some time ago" He revealed quietly. "It was a brutal massacre. I didn't know about it until recently" He admitted. He was still gutted about the whole thing and the fact he couldn't bring Vordun here. But it would just... Scare people. It would cause a serious problem if he brought Vordun here, with how big he was now. There was no hiding Vordun anymore. At least until Caius thought up a new plan. "Vordun is on standby elsewhere."
As Mu and Gilgamesh conversed, the competitors had finished filing in and the Ringmaster was ready to announce the rules.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you once again to the Festival of the Hunt! Collaborating with Torensten's ruling body, we hope to bring you plenty of entertainment and merriment on this glorious day! And now... It is officially time... For the MAIN... EVENT!
Competitors, listen closely. These are the rules as to how the Festival of the Hunt's main event will be organized.
- Competitors must sign up and give a name to be used by commentary, as well as for team assignment. You may give a description to be used as well if you wish. No sign-ups may be taken once the competition has started.
- We will be isolating and sealing off part of the city, where stores and residential areas will be unharmed. Contestants may not leave this area except in cases of emergency.
- Contestants will be assigned into teams of three, chosen at random. Should a team member be knocked out, they are eliminated from the competition and it is the job of their teammates to get them to safety before resuming competition. Failure to comply will result in the disqualification of the entire team. You cannot choose your own team.
- Monsters of different kinds from all across Serentestra will be released into the sealed area. Different monsters score different points per kill, the points of which will be tallied for each team at the end of the competition. Whichever team has the most points will be crowned the Champions of the Hunt!
- Combat pets and mounts may be used as they are considered part of the combatant. Anything that is human or human-like must be submitted as a separate contestant.
- Once teams have been chosen, you will be given a period to strategize with your team before the competition begins. You may work out a team name with your team once you have been assigned.

A team competition? That was interesting. Caius was used to working with others as part of the Dragonblades, but he couldn't help but wonder who he would be matched up with and against. He just hoped that whoever it was could pull their own weight.
Once names were given, the ringmaster would return to the podium.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... THANK YOU FOR WAITING!" He cried. "Sign-ups have officially concluded, and we are ready to announce the teams!
Representing Team A..."
Caius saw the other gunblade toting man stand up as his name was called, but his name was foggy to him. It seemed he would not have time to speak to him today, as Caius was not announced alongside his lineup. He perked up as the announcement came for the next one though, just wanting to be announced so he could plan.
"Representing Team B... A man shrouded in mystique. No man knows his name, no man knows his game... But we have been given a name! Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you... THE MYSTERIOUS... MU!"
As the crowd finishes cheering, the Ringmaster continues his speech.
"AND HIS TAG TEAM PARTNER... He claims to be a great and illustrious warrior from another world, who has slain his foes one by one, no matter what man or beast gets in his way! He claims that many have lined up in his path and he has knocked them all down! HE IS... THE VOIDWALKER... GILGAMESH!"
As the crowd lights up and dies down, the final entrant for Team B is soon to come...
"And finally... THEIR TAG TEAM PARTNER... A mercenary known throughout Torensten as a Lich Slayer... LEADER OF THE RENOWNED DRAGONBLADES MERCENARY GUILD... THE DRAGONGLAIVE, CAIUS DRAGELION!"
The crowd cheers loudly and Caius quirks a brow. Dragonglaive? That was a first he had heard that one. He was curious if this man studied up on known warriors. Considering he had to recruit for a festival like this every year, he supposed it wasn't all that surprising. Quite the nickname though. He wouldn't have thought that one up himself.
With that, each team was given a camp to strategize in while the sealed area was finished being prepared. Once Team B's was designated, Caius headed to his camp to meet with Mu and that Gilgamesh guy. He was pretty sure he remembered him, sort of? Didn't he see him in the woods or something? He recognized the armour, at least... That part wasn't hard.
The reptile seemed to find a few ideas for a path to take based off their talk, which he was happy to hear. Caius was glad to help in any way he could, and he was happy that he had been able to assist in some measure. Whether through his seeking out a path to better his own abilities his own way, or just finding his way in this world, if Caius could say he had even a small part in this... Then that made his day.
"The Dragonblades are always hiring" He pointed out with a small smile when he indicated he was interested in mercenary work. "They do have a bit of a criteria, but by what I've seen of you, I doubt that you'll have much problem. There's a woman in Torensten who goes by Celes. She is one of their two commanders, I'd seek her out if you're ever interested. Just don't make her mad" He remarked, laughing a bit at the end. "Even I'd be terrified to face her when she's mad. But yeah, a place to stay, a group of allies with similar goals and a place to find jobs can't hurt. And a lot of their jobs specialize in helping people, if that's something that strikes your fancy."
Kass would remark that his friend would be able to make Caius a weapon if he so chose, and he smiled lightly. "I design my own weapons, but I'd love to see what your friend is capable of one day."
Once they were at the city, it seemed that this would be their parting of ways. Though Kass brought up one last thing. Asking if the behemoth should be reported.
"I can do it" Caius remarked warmly. "I can find a guard on my way back to base and ensure that the remains are dealt with. Don't worry about that. It wouldn't be my first time" He remarked with a laugh.
Giving Vordun a pat on the head, he watched as the dragon soon flew off to head to the homestead. Caius would meet him there once he had touched base with Celes about the Behemoth that had been far too close to town. He then turned to Kass once more.
"I wish you the best, Ka'ssol. I hope you find what you're looking for."
Caius was already rather prickly at the man for his treatment of Celes, but he knew that Celes could handle herself. Either way, Caius stepped past Celes to greet the man. His resemblance to his former King was uncanny, and he noted it in the back of his mind as the man would explain that Caius was not who he thought he was. Caius was almost ready to pretend that was a shame and bid him farewell after his treatment of Celes, but then he brought up something interesting.
The Power of Kings.
Caius managed to keep from laughing, but it was hard. How funny was this? No sooner had he decided to move on from that life, did it decide to come crashing back in, in the form of this rude, haughty and pompous fellow. But Caius decided to keep his judgments to himself for now, keeping a stoic and professional demeanor as he nodded his head in response to his question.
Lowering his head slightly and closing his eyes, Caius let out an exhale. Holding out his hand, his gunblade materialized in his hand in a burst of blue light. Opening his eyes, he brought his hand and his blade to his chest, the sign of a Kingsglaive. For hearth and home.
"Is that what you were looking for?" He inquired, searching the man's eyes for answers. "I served King Noctis Lucis Caelum as one of his Kingsglaive before being sent here."
If Caius was not who he was looking for, did that mean there were other Kingsglaive around? Was he perhaps talking about that crazed woman? What if he was a Glaive hunter, like she was? While his stoic exterior and stone face didn't express it, he was on guard. He would not allow him to pass this room if he attacked. He would not be allowed to even have a chance to harm the recruits that would undoubtedly intervene, if Kingsglaive were his target. But he kept an open mind to possibilities. It was entirely possible this wasn't what he sought at all.
Torensten had been the subject of a few... Issues, as of late, to say the least. Parts had been blown up, civilians had been slaughtered, all because people with the power of gods had decided to have their fight there. Yet it was still a home to Caius, seeing as he lived nearby. And for the first time in... He wasn’t sure how long, there was nothing to do. Caius didn’t have a job lined up yet, the recruits had gone off for the day and Celes had already handled paperwork. And unfortunately for the workaholic Caius, his smithing tools were in the shop for repairs. But someone had recommended he use the time to rest. Something he didn’t do often. But he ended up obliging. Or well, it was more for Vordun to be honest. Caius (In his mind) could keep going without much break, but he knew that he needed to let Vordun unwind once in awhile. Unsure of where to take him, a recruit had suggested the beach. Seeing as the Pale Coast was a wasteland with a monster problem though, he thought to try the one in Torensten, near the port. At least it was safe. It wasn’t the most extravagant beach, but to Caius, who had seen Galdin Quay maybe once in his life a long time ago, it was beautiful. There was real sand, and real water. It was the perfect compliment to the seaside and the nearby docks. And most importantly, once again, it was safe.
Of course there was the issue of Vordun being in Torensten. With those dragon attacks a year ago, residents were understandably antsy about the idea of a drake showing up in town. So Caius had set up a plan. A costume that made Vordun look like an oversized chocobo. Sure Vordun tugged at it sometimes, but he was able to keep it on long enough for Caius to smuggle him into the Port District without trouble. Anyone who knew the truth already knew by his reputation and wouldn’t bother him out of respect for the work he and Vordun did. They knew better, and knew Vordun was harmless, and had helped save many lives. He hoped one day everyone would be like that. Once they got to the beach, the two got as far out of sight as possible before Caius took off the ridiculous disguise. Vordun seemed quite happy to be out of that thing and Caius couldn’t really blame him.
Now that they were alone and settled, Caius took out the camping pack he had bought in Sonora and was today re-purposing for this trip, bringing out a chair in front of the water with towels attached. Caius wore something a bit different today. Leaving that heavy Dragonblade jacket at home, he’d gone for a breezier set of attire. A blue t-shirt and grey sweating pants he had also picked up in Sonora. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d walked around in public without one of his armored jackets. He couldn’t remember the last time he showed even a bare arm in public. He felt... Normal. He also suddenly felt very naked all of a sudden. He wasn’t sure how to react to that. It was a stark reminder that he was never going to cut it in civilian life. He was where he was and always would be.
But it seemed that Caius, even in a time like this, still wasn’t capable of just relaxing and not dong anything. Tacking bait onto the hook, he armed his fishing rod as he relaxed back on the chair. Vordun curled up and settled down nearby, as Caius cast his line. The least he could do if he could do nothing else, was stock up on fish.

Suppose this world isn't so terra-ble.

"Would you believe it wasn't all that long ago?" Caius remarked with a small laugh. Believe it or not, it hadn't been all that long since their meeting at all. Even if it felt like forever. What felt like a year ago was maybe a few months at best. Time here was... Weird. "But it's good to see you again."
She asked if the Dragonblades were nearby, and he shook his head. "Just Vordun and I right now" He answered. "The rest of the Dragonblades are on jobs, or resting back in Torensten. Perhaps you'd like to check the place out sometime? We have a building now" He offered cheerfully. While it wasn't an extension of membership, or pressuring her to seek it, he figured he would at least offer for her to come take a tour of the place. "It's not much right now, but we're expanding as we go."
Cat Man meanwhile seemed to either be offended or completely indifferent to his mention of Spirans. His suddenly ripping up the fish and tossing it aside also seemed to indicate that maybe he had said something bad.
"Did I say something wrong?" He inquired toward the cat man, gingerly bowing his head. "My apologies if I have somehow wrought you offense. It was never my intention" Caius promised. Vordun meanwhile, had taken notice of the fact that the fish was left discarded. He'd begun bumbling past Caius as he apologized to the Ronso. "The Spirans are free men, if it was a wording issue. We're more of a family working toward common goals than anything. We all just want to see people safe and not come to harm. And a lot of folks are displaced from their worlds and only really have combat experience. It gives them a chance to find a place to belong and find their footing in this new world."
Of course Caius was wrong, but he didn't know the Ronso's feelings. How could he?
Considering he wasn't used to instructing and the fact he had pushed himself so hard in such a short period, one would suppose this was inevitable. Though Caius would be roused by the sound of voices. Droopily getting to his feet, he stretched out before following the source of the voices, just in time to hear a voice he didn't recognize exclaim about someone being the commander. He turned the corner soon after, and stopped when he realized that the person was saying that he was speaking to, was Celes. And Celes he had just acted as though he were surprised people allowed her to be a commander now.
Now, Caius wasn't used to matters of sexism, but their prior conversations had told him that it existed. And most of all, he knew very well that Celes was very... Prickly, about the idea of being seen as anything but what and who she was. Caius debated the idea of bailing the poor sod out, but the last place he wanted to be... Was in her way.
Luckily for the man, Celes let him off easily with some harsh remarks before going to look for him. She didn't have to look far, as Caius had just stepped out. He hadn't caught much of the last part as he was too busy wondering if he was going to have to scrape the poor bastard off the wall. Caius regarded her with a curious expression though when she brought up king's guards or something like that.
"We have kings here?" He asked, wondering why Celes would ask him about it. Though something in Caius was stirring. He just wasn't sure what. Either way, he got the impression she wanted him to tag in. Which was fine with him. He wouldn't want to take over unless she wanted him to, or unless it was necessary. She was his partner in the Dragonblades, not his subordinate.
He shrugged his shoulders and started to walk past her when he noticed that the desk nearby had been recently used, evidenced by the fresh pen marks and new mess of papers. He looked back to Celes.
"Getting you to take a breather isn't going to be easy, is it Cel?" He asked lightheartedly, a hint of minor amusement in his eyes. He was a little annoyed, a little of the "God damnit Celes" mind. He had done all this in hopes she'd be able to take a breather, but he'd underestimated the workaholic tendencies of the general and that was his fault. He lowered his voice slightly to keep their matter private. "We really do appreciate the work you do here. But please don't push yourself too hard too often. Nobody will blame you for resting here and there" He spoke softly.
It wasn't a command, but a request. Caius wanted to say that he partly feared she might collapse if she overdid it. But he was... Not good at expressing personal feelings. Nor did he know how to bring it about. Not to mention it might only provoke a prideful rebuking. So there was that too.
Even if the pot was calling the kettle black here. While he didn't tell her this, it really only took looking over records of job gil being funnelled into the coffers to figure out that Caius wasn't much better on the overworking front.
Either way, there was still work to be done on his end. Caius moved into the room and regarded the man with a curious expression. Something about his face was... Familiar.
Noctis?
No. This wasn't Noctis. But he looked very similar, that was for sure.
Caius hadn't expected to find this grotto, but here it was. He'd heard rumors of the discovery of some kind of ancient forest and had gone to investigate himself, his explorative nature taking over... But there was something about it that he wasn't expecting. This grotto. He didn't know how to explain it. But something about it made it clear to him that it was a safe place. While his shoulders remained uptight as he and the blue Fire Drake moved through the forest, Some sort of creature with a bob on its head flew past the trees, but Caius hadn't had a chance to get a good look at it. It was the same one he had seen earlier while exploring this wood, just before the weird smelly guy had interrupted his rest. Now curious about what sort of creatures were in this wood if they weren't trying to eat him, he found himself following, trying his best to keep up with the little red bob he could see between the branches, though he was never able to figure out just what was behind it.
Perhaps it was something planning to lure him in to use for dinner? Or maybe, even with how safe this forest felt... He was just a little too paranoid. To be fair, the last time he had found a forest he didn't know, it conjured illusions and tried to kill him. So it wasn't hard to blame Caius for being just a little on edge.
But then the creature disappeared. Caius growled low in frustration. It would be a pain for them to find their way out of the forest again now. He cussed under his breath, and Vordun let out a snort that erupted steam from his nostrils in turn as Caius seemed to decide that all they could really do was just... Keep going, he supposed? That was about all they could do. They were here to explore, after all. Getting out of here could come later, and worst case scenario... They could try and fly out from under the trees. It wouldn't be easy, but it would make for a good contingency plan if it became necessary.
Caius let out a deep exhale as he steeled himself for the battle to come. They had cleared the way a bit for Freya to work her magic, and with her covered, now was the time to continue to attract attention and then deal with their own side of things. The monsters had found Caius and Vordun to be the bigger threat, and he was sure that Freya was smart enough to make the most of that. As Freya headed for the archers, Caius tossed one dagger at one of the goblins, suddenly Warp-Striking forward and slashing through their chest with the other, catching the first and tossing it at another to repeat the action over and over again. The goblins were completely taken off guard and overwhelmed by the intense speed of his strikes, as they were unable to predict where Caius was going to be and where he was going to strike from.
But the rapid Warp Strikes would come at a cost, he knew. His mana was depleting quickly, and while it would replenish itself using the Power of Kings, that could only be attained through not using his magic. And if he used up his magic... Well, Stasis would make things a hell of a lot harder. Glaives were powerful so long as they could moderate the use of their abilities. If they didn't... They would be rendered helpless. Every action he took was a gamble.
Caius tossed his blade upwards just as Vordun began charging up. As Caius warped upwards, Vordun took the hint and unleashed a stream of flames once more where Caius had once been, engulfing the goblins in flames. As they began to go down in droves, Caius landed on Vordun's back.
A volley of arrows were launched at the two of them though. Reacting quickly, Caius summoned his barrier to block them from himself and Vordun. Freya was going to have to act quickly. This barrier used a lot of magic...
As if that weren't bad enough, a loud rumbling could be heard, as the ground began to shake... Caius' eyes widened, and he certainly hoped that Freya could finish the archers quickly.
Of course she wasn't hard to convince. Yuna could never resist helping someone in need. Neither of them could. It was why they had been in this mess to begin with. But the thought of Yuna getting into it with Ardyn again was a concern to Caius. Aranea had made it very clear to him. Do not engage. He cannot be beaten. At least not right now.
Yuna brought up that he reacted to her sending. While he knew little about the sending, he was surprised that something from her world could even phase Ardyn, considering how selective it seemed the terms of stopping his immortality were. But he nodded his head either way. "It would be difficult to get him to stop long enough to perform the sending. But I suppose that's just why we need to get even stronger" Caius pointed out. "We will find a way to make it work. But until then... You need to stay alive to even use your sending power if it comes to that. So no engaging him if you can help it. And if you have to, get out of there as soon as you can" He repeated, doubling it mainly because it was even more important now if Yuna actually had something that could stop him. That made her survival all the more important, with the subject of Ardyn being bigger than just the two of them.
She seemed surprised when he brought up the sword wound, indicating she had thought it was a chronic issue. She asked if Ardyn had done it, and he shook his head. "No" He spoke, trying to hide his disgust with what he was about to say. "A man named Somnus"
He had been trying to repress that particular memory. It had been working so far until she asked.
Either way, he got to his feet, and offered to help her up. "We had best get going. I'll accompany you to Provo and we'll diverge there. I'll give the account to Celes" He spoke up. With that, he and Vordun would begin walking. He looked back to Yuna for a moment.
"There will be no Chosen King to come and save us in ten years time. This time around... It's up to us."
The invitations to the ball had come out of nowhere. Neither he or Celes knew why, but it didn't take much for them to guess. They had made powerful enemies over the last few months, and they had severely pissed said people off. This was a ruse, they both knew that. A red herring. They would be ambushed there. But if they didn't show... Their enemies had already shown that they were ruthless. And what if they had invited other persons of note there? Other Dragonblades?
His thoughts went to Yuna. Yuna was innocent. She wasn't horribly paranoid like he was. She'd likely go, and they'd likely hurt her and others. The both of them knew what they had to do, even if they didn't like it. Caius didn't understand everything involved with this formal thing at first, but Celes explained things well enough. The garb puzzled him. Growing up on a farm and then living through the apocalypse, he wasn't used to these nice, formal, fancy things. Helping Celes zip into a dress had been hell too. As had getting Caius into this... Thing he was wearing. It was a military jacket-like thing, black and lined with gold trims, that went down to his knees. It was the closest thing to formal wear that was similar to what he was used to and would be somewhat comfortable in. But it was still far too tight and restricting for his tastes, and it would impede him if - no, when - a fight broke out. Caius was a bit grumbly about having to wear these infernal things and noted that Celes' dress was even more restricting, but Celes pointed out they were custom. While he didn't like it, it was an acceptable explanation. He wore a simple mask, and he had asked Relm to tie his hair back once Celes had suggested that he needed to take a comb to it. If they weren't so easy to recognize, perhaps their enemies would have a harder time.
But god, did he not like it. He felt naked this way, unprotected no matter how tight it was. He would have preferred to be wearing armour. But one thing not even armour would have been able to protect him from was the sheer amount of people here. With no faces he could recognize, he was stranded in a sea of masks. It distracted from the beauty of the place. As striking as it was, Caius was on edge from the possibility of attack, especially now that he knew it could come from literally anywhere. And it also turned out that Caius was not a fan of tight spaces with lots of people. Not a fan at all. But Celes... She had been a comforting presence for him. She was the one person keeping him calm here when honestly, deep down he wanted to just turn and walk away. He hated this. He hated the paranoia of so many people, so many people that could turn and attack, hurt himself and Celes, hurt the people here. All under masks. So many masks. Sure, he wore a mask himself... But would they know him anyway? He stuck close to Celes, but there was bumping and jarring and suddenly, she was gone.
"Celes?" He asked again. He knew her mask, he knew her dress. Neither of them were there. Caius had already started to panic, but now with Celes gone? It didn't take long for him to turn and rush out of the large ballroom and into the open air. He didn't stop for some time, didn't even bother to look up to see where he was going. But when he did look up, all he found around him were hedges. And then it hit him. Something was watching. Perhaps waiting. Perhaps their enemies had been waiting for this moment to strike. His combat instincts had been on full alert for a full minute before he turned just when he heard rustling. Was something approaching? He didn't know if he would be able to defend himself as easily if something - or someone. Potentially even the bandits that he had been dealing with - attacked here.
Hearing it again, he turned, and flat out collided with another...
