Ka'ssol sighed. "...Been out here all blassted day, not found a ssingle hadess-blassted thing!" the blue-grey bangaa complained, throwing up his dust covered hands while he kicked a nearby half-destroyed wall in frustration. A single brick fell loose and clattered among its fallen fellows. "That'ss the lasst time I lissten to a damn warg!" he promised, snatching up his custom-built staff from the nearby rubble.
This was the fourth ruined, abandoned building Ka'ssol had delved into, and like the others near the city it had been picked clean. "...I'm going to have to head further out, aren't I?" he mused, eyeing the low-hanging sun in the sky. "...Only a few hourss of daylight left." he mumbled, appearing to weigh the waning light against his near-exhausted funds. "...I only have enough for a couple nightss at th' in at besst." the reptile concluded. With a sigh, and a check in a small bag half-hidden under his cloak, the bangaa headed deeper into the monster-infested ruins...
It was nightfall by the time he hit the next cluster of promising buildings. The bangaa wasn't much bothered by the dark, due to his species' poor eyesight, his other senses were far more reliable and more then made up for his terrible night vision. Moving with practiced ease, the bangaa saddled up to the nearest of the buildings. He ran his hands along the side of the mostly-intact wall. Brick, he wondered? No, the blocks were too large. Just a stone building, then. This was...somewhat more promising then the places before, this could be something other then a private home, perhaps.
Ka'ssol sniffed the air a few times, and quietly made a face. Many beasts had been in the area. Too many to pick out species, but at least the scent was fairly old. Sliding around the building until he came to a hole in the wall, the bangaa slipped inside. On his way in, Ka'sool kicked a stone, freezing as it clattered along the dirty floor. The bangaa held his breath, straining his ears to listen for movement. Until he was sure nothing was alerted to his presence, the bangaa dare not move.
Minutes ticked by and there was nothing. He sniffed again to be sure, but no, none of the smells had become stronger, nor had the air stirred, as far as he could tell. Gingerly, he began to move again, feeling his way around the interior of the place. Much as he could tell with his senses, the bangaa was in some kind of entry way. The hole in the wall wasn't far from the door, and with that as an anchor point, the treasure-hunting thief began to explore.
Before he even began to look for items, he mapped the layout of the building. It was somewhat large, with a big, open entry way and a couple of small rooms towards the back. Nothing he noted seemed to indicate beds, though he did find a restroom. Likely this was a shop at one point, he thought. With the rooms mapped combined with the lack of any active monsters, Ka'ssol risked a light.
Fishing in his small bag, he grabbed a golfball sized orb. Pressing a button on its smooth surface, the bangaa tossed the sphere lightly into the air. He had no memory of where it came from or who made it, but the little thing was damn useful. It began to glow, shedding light as if it were a lantern, and hovered just above the reptile's left shoulder. With illumination, he began a more thorough search.
Indeed, this seemed to be some kind of shop, with various ruined containers for what the bangaa could only classify as 'general goods.' Most of them were completely ruined, but he found a few small sealed potions, lucky him. The bangaa gently pulled the sealed tops free and gave them an experimental sniff. "...Not sspoiled, I can ssell these." he said, replacing the stopper and cleaning off what he could of the aged label. Just the basic 'healing potion' used by adventurers the world over. Nothing rare, but it would get him a few meals and a night or two at a cheap inn. Good enough.
The bangaa placed the scavenged potions into a large messenger bag he carried, and was about to leave, but...something stopped him. Turning around and scanning the room again, he headed for one of the back rooms. A staff room, by the look of the rusted lockers, and the large, round table dominating the center of the room.
As he walked the room a second time, he noticed something that gave him pause. "...Wait. Thiss isn't....rusted?" he said, stopping at one of the lockers. Unlike its brethren, this tall locker bore no signs of rust. Sure it oxidized, but unlike the others around it, this one seemed to be made of a different material, perhaps aluminium or something similar, that tarnished, rather then rusted? Slowly, he reached out his hand, and tapped it. The thing rang hollow, but he swore he heard something rattle inside. "What ssecretss do you hold?" he mumbled, going to open it. To his surprise...it was locked.
The thief grinned. Locked meant it hadn't been searched. Lucky, lucky bangaa! He eyed it closely, running his fingers along the front until he found the lock. A simple, but effective set-up. It was like a door, with a built-in lock rather then needing someone to provide a padlock. A bit more secure then other types, but no less pickable. Ka'ssol took a knee, and dug out his tools.
Minutes passed, and Ka'ssol swore in frustration. The lock was more complicated then it looked, and he'd already snapped two picks. He pulled out the last one, silver and newer looking then the snapped instruments on the floor. "Up to you, lucky." he mumbled, getting the tools into place again. He pushed the 'turner' as he called it, into place, and began to gently feel for the tumblers with 'lucky'. Like before, the bangaa found them easily enough, but now he knew there were 'catchers' installed. Small ridged rings meant to trap and snap picks. Closing his eyes, and holding his breath, the bangaa relied on his hearing to work his magic. He slowly felt in, soft 'tinks' echoing from the depths of the lock as he felt out the tool-catchers and moved the pick gently past them, towards the -actual- tumblers. Not fooling me this time, Ka'ssol thought. He began to tap rhythmically, testing the tumblers' weights and how far up each one went. He pushed the 'turner' basically a blank key, in a little deeper beside his pick. He was careful not to jam the pick into a catcher this time. 'Lucky' was a higher quality pick then the other two. Slimmer, which made it easier to avoid traps and the 'false tumblers,' that were the catchers, but it was also easier to break. The rolled the pick slightly in his hand, and pushed, while also trying to turn the blank key. There was a 'chink' and the two caught for a moment. Ka'ssol hissed, thinking he'd broken his favorite pick...but no, he'd only brushed a catcher. Time to reset.
More minutes ticked by, and FINALLY, the bangaa hit the right tumblers and quickly turned the key. What waited for him in the locker...he could scarcely believe. A small, squat, metal, and most importantly sealed container. He knew its make, though he did not know why. With shaking hands, slowly he reached down, and picked it up. Gingerly, he opened it, a soft 'hiss' issued forth from the pressurized canister. And inside...was a skystone. "An honest to gods sskysstone. I could power my own sship with one this ssize."
As he fawned over his find, there was a low, echoing howl. Ka'ssol cursed and doused his light, snatching it out of the air and jamming it back into the pack. He pulled out a small ovoid cylinder and picked up his bo. He clicked it into a small chamber in the haft with one hand while the other resealed the canister and put it into his bag as well. More howls. "Damn...wolves." he whispered. Gathering his bag and pulling the strap over his shoulder again, the bangaa began to creep towards the hole in the building he'd climbed in from.
Then, the repitle's luck soured further. The wolves began to bark at something, loudly. Something that roared angrily in response. The bangaa's bones vibrated from the noise, and the wolves scattered with sharp, whimpering barks. There was a low rumbling growl that shook the dust from the ruined ceiling, followed by slow, thudding steps. Ka'saal's breath caught in his chest. That could only mean one thing: a behemoth. A gods damned behemoth, and by the sounds of the steps, a full-grown one too. The bangaa pressed himself hard against the wall, staying hidden from the beast...he hoped.
The bangaa waited, hardly daring to breathe as he heard the creature stalking the area. It didn't seem interested in chasing the wolves, unfortunately for Ka'ssol. He could only wait until the beast sounded like it wasn't right in front of him anymore. The thudding steps got closer...and then started to fade again as it moved past the bangaa's hiding spot. Now, he thought, was his chance.
He turned, dashed out the hole, and dived to the side suddenly as his sensitive ears caught sound of a low, heavy woosh. Ka'ssol hadn't waited long enough, and he was almost laid out by the beast's tail. Rolling on the ground and scrabbling to his feet, the bangaa took off. His sudden fall had already alerted the huge purple beast and it was turning towards him. "Oh @?#*$ me!" he shouted, darting around a low runed wall just as the beast roared in anger and squashed half of an abandoned building with a misaligned pounce that took it far over Ka'ssol's head.
The hard THUD of the creature's landing shook some of the nearby buildings, and they began to collapse like cards and dominoes. Ka'ssol swore again. He was almost trapped now, an arena of rubble hemming him in as the huge beast shook itself free of destroyed brick work. With no better option, he pulled his bag's strap over his head, and wedged it between two pieces of broken wall before turning to the creature.
"...Y'know, now I think I undersstand why no one had found the sskysstone before now." Ka'ssol mumbled, disheartened. He thumbed a small switch on his bo, and red energy crackled to life at one end. It formed into a halberd's head, but made from sizzling, hot, red energy. "Well, c'mon, ugly..." he mumbled, throwing up his little orb-light again, training it on the huge creature. It winced and barred its sizable teeth at the sudden glare of light. It was full-grown alright. Massive, and with a few scars along its body. This one had been in a few fights...and....there was a sword embedded between it's shoulder-blades. Not the first time some unlucky adventurer had stumbled upon it then. "Alright, ugly. Guess it'ss juss' you n' me..." he said with far more confidence then he had.
The two began to circle one another. The behemoth obviously too experienced to just charge the bangaa who's weapon and light were trained on it. Ka'ssol picked up on this, and frowned. Quickly, he kicked up a small rock, and tossed it at the behemoth, trying to aim for it's eye. The creature reacted faster then it had any right to, and pulled its head up, causing the stone to bounce harmlessly off it's cheek. Ka'ssol had expected that, however, and quickly ejected the 'red' cartridge. He pulled out another one, a brown one and jammed it in as the creature noticed something was 'wrong' with the bangaa's weapon.
If there was one thing the reptile was good at, it was misdirection. He shook the weapon, pretending it was 'broken' to get the large creature to charge. It dashed forward, closing the distance in naught but a few strides. At the same time, Ka'ssol pressed the button, a crackling, rumbling maul-head made from earth-energy sprung forth from the tip of the bo. With a cry of frustration, and hopefully success, he slammed it into the ground and jammed in the activation button, holding it down. The whole bo hummed, and shook in his hands. "Take THIS you @?#*$!" he shouted, as the weapon head detonated.
Huge spires of earth jutted from the ground in a short, jagged line, slamming into the leaping behemoth's chest and neck, driving it back, while it roared in anger and pain. The spikes had pierced its hide, but, to Ka'ssol's dismay, it hadn't brought the creature down. In fact, the bangaa paid for his attack by taking one in kind. He had hesitated, for just a moment, thinking he'd won...and the tail caught him. The creature had danced around on its paws and slammed the huge, thick limb into him. He let out a sharp gasp as he was launched across the rubble-arena and slammed into the broken remains of a home. "Aaah....s-shit..." he wheezed. Something broke, and when the bangaa attempted to move, pain lanced through his right side. Those were his ribs. The behemoth, bleeding, and full of indignant rage closed in on the bangaa, intent on unleashing it's wrath upon the small creature that dared to cause it pain, and Ka'ssol for his part could do little but reach for his bo, hoping he could activate it again before the creature bore down upon him.
Between jobs, Caius had begun his trek back to Torensten. While it was getting rather late, the night felt like the best time to attempt to hunt when the creatures would be less expecting it. Sure they would be hiding more than likely but Caius had a secret weapon for that - Vordun. The winged lizard creature was the size of the smallest of horses, but he knew how to flush critters out. And Caius was wanting to continue Vordun’s practice of hunting more independently now that he was bigger.
He almost missed when he was small enough to piggyback on Caius’ shoulder though.
They would be starting on more dangerous creatures in time. Though for now if they ran into a bear, instead of running they would hunt it together. Of course that was for then. For now Caius was getting Vordun used to new strategies. When he was smaller, “Throat” and “Leg” commands were used and depended on the creature. Vordun’s chompers had grown stronger, to the point that him latching on a leg would likely dismember it, which was unnecessarily painful for the animal. So a new set of commands would be needed, new strategies...
But the roar disrupted that chain of thought. As well as their hunting plans for the evening.
The pair hadn't even had the chance to enter the forest when the resounding roar would change everything. Caius knew that roar. It was the roar of a Behemoth... And it was close by. His expression changed in an instant, and even Vordun's demeanor had changed.
"The hunt has changed."
Caius immediately turned and took off at a run, with the dragon flapping his wings and taking off over his head in order to keep up with him. After Vordun had been taught to do this, Caius no longer had to slow down in order to accommodate for Vordun. He could run full tilt and Vordun was able to keep up in the air. They would find what appeared to be a man - from a distance anyway - engaged in combat with the large Behemoth. "Vordun, engage!" Caius called to the dragon above him as he would immediately go after the Behemoth. He didn't know the circumstances... But he did know that a behemoth could not be left wandering this close to town. As the creature bore down on his prey, Caius would summon his sword and toss it at the creature, hitting it in the face as he would then Warp forward, catching the weapon and striking again. Vordun meanwhile, would go for the creature's side, ramming into it full speed in hopes of unbalancing it.
The twin impacts of man and dragon slammed into the behemoth. It was thrown hard to the side, its attack forgotten as the huge purple creature struggled to stay on its feet. It's confusion was enough for Ka'ssol to gather his wits, and dart over to his satchel's hiding place. Digging out one of the potions he found before, the bangaa chugged it. A horrible itching sensation wormed through his body, causing the reptile to shiver and grit his teeth as the potion magically knitted his aching ribs back together. "Thank the godss..." he mumbled, looking over to the creature. Every instinct screamed for the bangaa to flee, to take his prize and run but...he couldn't bring himself to abandon the man whom had just saved him.
The behemoth, meanwhile had regained its senses, and swatted at the annoying dragon with one massive fore-claw. It was a half-hearted gesture at best and the retaliatory blow struck nothing but air. It seemed, for the moment, Vordun had the creature's attention and thus commanded its ire. Caius, while a threat on his own, appeared to be too mobile for the behemoth to really get a bead on the teleporting blond man, as his blinking movement had put him out of sight of the creature. The behemoth fixed its gaze on Vordun, and an odd, obviously magical power began to flood the creature.
Ka'ssol was crouched, holding his weapon in both hands and working to control his breathing. He was picturing his father, an accomplished dragoon. Specifically, the huge leaps the older reptile was known for. Slowly, the bangaa coiled his feet under him, placing his tail against the ground, and adjusting his posture, like his father did. The bangaa had watched his father prepare countless times, paying rapt attention to this hero figure. However, he had misjudged just HOW HIGH this would get him. As he kicked off the ground, he looked down, noticing the behemoth was actually BELOW him. "Oh no, too high, too high!" he shouted, panicking for a moment.
The bangaa had only just now realized the flaw in this plan. He had never seen his father STRIKE a target. In his panic, he improvised. The bangaa gripped his bo like one might a pogo stick. Both hands clenched tight, and his feet squeezing the end just behind the emitter. It was quite the comical scene, watching the lizard hurtling towards the behemoth's head. Quietly he hoped he didn't just sign his own death warrant.
The bangaa struck the creature in the side of the head with a resounding CRACK. The impact was too much for the elemental blade and it shattered after embedding itself in the behemoth's left horn. Ka'ssol was flung free, landing flat on his back with his bo still locked in a panicked death-grip. The behemoth's casting was thrown off as it staggered backwards, a sheet of ice covering the left side of it's face. It sported a cracked horn, where the bangaa's leap had struck home. A feature that lit up as a huge, firey rock screamed through the air, slamming into a broken building nearby.
The rock impacted with a ground-shaking THOOM and sent shards of stonework hurtling through the air. Meanwhile, Ka'ssol brought himself to his feet, coughing harshly. The bangaa barely had time to catch his breath before the best tore after him in a rage. Of course, not having broken ribs, and being able to SEE the beast coming for him, Ka'ssol had a much easier time doding the oncoming pounce from the huge creature. He balled up and rolled away, crying out in panic and distress. His legs were still working, so the reptile put them to work, keeping just ahead of the fuming creature. Already, he was fumbling with another capsule, hoping to insert it before the creature caught him and ground his (comparatively) little body into paste.
Caius swapped to a duel-sided sword in an instant as his first blade disappeared, and he would immediately take aim and begin firing rapid shots just in front of Vordun. "Vordun!" Caius called to the dragon, who would wait until the right moment before breathing a stream of flames that would send the energy bullets, alight, toward the Behemoth's flesh. The behemoth would recover and swat at Vordun, but it had flaming bullets to deal with now in the same motion. It appeared to have focused on what it had thought it could reach. When Caius noticed it going for Vordun, an idea popped into his head.
"Fly!" He called to Vordun, who would immediately take off, and Caius hoped the creature would follow him. Caius would swap weapons again, this time returning to the longsword-like gunblade. It was there he saw the man that had been initially fighting the dragoon - or well, man-lizard man - springing into the air with a Jump that he recognized as a Dragoon technique via his experiences with Aranea and Faris.
Except they didn't usually go this high.
Caius noticed the creature beginning to cast magic. He hadn't seen a Behemoth cast magic before, so it was a surprise to him. Realizing it was a threat to Vordun, Caius didn't hesitate to toss his blade and blip through the air, catching the blade with one hand and grabbing its scales with the other. Caius would climb until he had leverage and with that he began slashing and slashing, over and over again without fear or mercy. He needed to stop the creature's casting, but it didn't seem to be.
At least until Lizardman would break his blade off its head, that seemed to do the trick. The ice spell seemed to hurt the Behemoth instead, though nearly threw Caius off. What did throw him off was the impact of the large rock that flattened the ruins nearby. As the creature went hurling toward Lizardman, Caius would tumble down, taken off guard as he couldn't get back into position to get back on it nor steady himself. Vordun would dive down, catching Caius in his talons. Hanging upside down, Caius stared up at Vordun with narrowed eyes, but appreciated it all the same. "Fly over it!" Caius commanded to Vordun as he closed his eyes, trying to negate the approaching disaster of the blood rushing to his head. Relying on his ears, Caius would wait until he could hear the beast below him before commanding Vordun to release him.
Opening his eyes, Caius plummeted back down and would use the Warp Strike to get back to the creature's side. Right side up now, he would begin to attack the creature's side with a series of slashes in an attempt to deal damage as well as stop it from turning Lizardman into Lizard Stew.
The behemoth bellowed in rage, swiping at the infuriating man and his dragon companion. The strike failed to hit home, however, as Caius' warp had already taken him out of the creature's strike, and the dragon was safe due to the behemoth's aim. And by the time the large, angry creature could aim another massive, muscled paw, the dragon too, was out of harm's way.
Meanwhile, Ka'ssol had recovered from his, frankly, horrible idea. The bangaa rose to his feet, stumbling for a moment, only to notice the huge creature glaring down at him...before it flinched and stumbled to the side once again. Caius' strikes got the behemoth's attention yet again. Using the distraction to his advantage, Ka'ssol jammed in the last of his capsules, and a firey spear-blade blossomed into existence. "...A sspear head? I guesss I can't be picky." the banga mumbled while moving forward to assist his mystery savior.
While the behemoth curled to attack Caius, a big set of claws sweeping downwards to try and smash the formidable combatant, Ka'ssol harried its other side, jamming the fiery blade into the OTHER fore-paw to attempt to throw the creature off-balance. It didn't do that, unfortunately, but it did distract the creature again, pulling its attention away from the teleporting warrior.
As it swung its head around to once again deal with this infuriating lizardman who just won't DIE, it caught the flaming spear-head on the tip of its jaw. The blade dragged a shallow, but painful line from jaw-to-chin, which earned Ka'ssol a swift SMACK from the paw originally meant for Caius. The bangaa managed to get his weapon in the way, and rather then shattering his ribs again, he was only sent flying. Rather then end up on his ass for the third time this fight, he flipped over backwards, and managed to land MOSTLY on his feet. He did have to steady himself with his free hand.
By this point, the behemoth was riddled with various wounds, most shallow, but slowly getting worse. It seems the huge beast wasn't used to fighting multiple competent warriors at the same time. Sensing that the fight was only going to get worse for it from hear on, the behemoth roared to the sky, throwing its head back suddenly.
A huge gust of wind blew in out of nowhere, and swirled around the creature. Ka'ssol was forced to shield his eyes, or risk debris blinding him. The creature was hoping to use this distraction to escape, trying to leap over some of the ruined buildings and escape. It's sudden flight did cause the damaged horn to break free, slamming into the ground as the creature ran. Thankfully, it seemed it was moving away from the city, rather then towards it. Perhaps this wasn't its usual hunting grounds, but what could cause a behemoth, a magic-using one at that, to move this close to such a large settlement?
It seemed that the original target of the behemoth had rejoined the battle in full, that was good. It even managed to draw the behemoth's attention away from Caius, giving him free reign to continue striking as much as he could. He knew he'd get fatigued over time, but stubborn determination kept him swinging for the time being. Vordun meanwhile, had u-turned and swooped back, unleashing a stream of flames at the behemoth's body that Caius would need to dodge, using the air control tactics of the Power of Kings to jolt himself to the side in time to evade the forthcoming flamethrower. If they could just keep going, he thought, they would be able to outwill this creature and bring it down... Just a little more...
The combined attacks between the two warriors and the dragon though, seemed to give the Behemoth the idea that maybe it wasn't going to fare all that well. A roar ensued from the behemoth which kicked up a series of strong winds that blew Caius and Vordun back. Caius noticed the creature shed its horn before it would use the distraction to make a run for it. As it was moving away from the city though, Caius had no interest in giving chase. As the Kingsglaive landed, and Vordun soon after him, Caius would grin wryly as he watched it leave.
"Good job, Vordun" Caius commended his winged companion, giving them a pat on the head. "I guess hunting training's been rescheduled in favor of a bit of extra combat training. We'll take that, aye?"
Caius would walk toward the one that the behemoth had attacked before, regarding them with a quirked brow. "Are you alright?" He asked. "And how in the world did you manage to lure a magic using behemoth all the way to town? I've never seen one use magic before. And never seen a behemoth come this close either."
"It'ss....running?" Ka'ssol mumbled, shielding his eyes from the kicked up dust as it fled. In the confusion, he hadn't noticed Caius approaching him and jumped in surprise at the fellow's questioning. He blinked once, and then a second time, thinking on how to answer the admittedly short barrage of questions.
"...I'm fine now. I wass lucky enough to find recovery potionss among the wreckage." he explained. The questions about the behemoth itself surprised the bangaa. "...Well, I've sseen them usse magic before, but...not like THAT. Even then, it'ss the KINGSS that usse it." he said, crossing his arms. "But I didn't lure the creature here. In fact, I wass trying to avoid the beasst. I want to ssay it wass attracted by the wolvess...but I cannot be ssure." he finished, adjusting his weight to one leg. Shifting his grip, the banga 'cocked' his staff, and ejected the small metal capsule with a quiet ka-chik. The blade at the tip vanished instantly.
"...Though, conssidering people come from...multiple worldss, iss it too much of a sstretch to believe the creaturess could too?" he wondered aloud, while he went back towards the spot where he stashed his satchel.
Gently, carefully, he opened it, fearing his prize might have been damaged. He smiled and let out a sigh of relief. The skystone was unharmed. "...Though perhapss, if it were looking for ssomething to power it's magickss, it might have been after thiss..." he said, gently pulling the stone out of his bag. It was orange-brown in color, and was cut into an odd, lumpy 'tear-drop' shape with a knob on the top. "It iss called magacite. Where I come from, thiss particular type allowss airsshipss to fly." he explained, his fat tail flicking in what can only be termed 'excitement'.
"Now that I have thiss, I might end up with a ssmall sship of my own..." he continued, that smile from before widening, and showing a few teeth. Though the smile suddenly vanished, as though he had forgotten something. Quickly he put the item back in the bag, and bowed to Caius.
"Forgot my damn mannerss. I am Ka'ssol Tkal, a treassure hunter. Thankss for helping with that hellss-damned beasst." he said with a...far more friendly smile then the one previous. "And you ass well. Vordun, yess?" he inquired, turning towards the dragon for a moment.
"...That remindss me, though." he said, turning back to Caius. "How in the godss name did you jump around like that? I've never sseen humess move like that, not even the ninja." he said, obviously impressed. Compared to before, Ka'ssol had lost all his tautness. He appeared loose and relaxed, like someone in a tavern, kicking back.
Lizardman seemed fine, so that was a plus. He brought up the distinct possibility that perhaps as they were here from other worlds, the monsters may be too. Caius hadn't thought of that personally, and he quirked a brow. What if many of the monsters he had encountered had been transported from other worlds just as he had? It was an... Interessssting question. Regardless, at least the incident was now over with and nobody had been hurt.
The lizard pulled out something, being what he presumed he had come to find. Caius studied it a moment, curious as to its origin. The lizard was more or less ruins digging, then? Interesting, he supposed. A bit crude, but the dead wasn't going to stop him and it wasn't like Caius was any stranger to foraging through ancient ruins in search of adventure and treasure. Even if this looked far less ancient than anything Caius had explored thus far. Lizard guy stated it was a heavy source of magical power and that it might have lured the behemoth here. He considered protesting carrying that sort of thing around if it would lure that kind of creature back, but then again... If he took it away from the towns, then all the better. He was just glad he was here when it came close to town. That could have been bad otherwise.
"Magicite" he called it, and Caius mouthed the name when he recognized it. Where had he heard the name before? Perhaps Celes would know, if he asked her. It didn't sound like anything he had heard of that was originally from this world though. Lizardman continued on about how he might be able to power an airship of his own with this power source.
"I hope you have as much gil's worth of power as this thing" Caius remarked, a slight hint of amusement crossing his features. "Airships are an expense and a half. I've got a whole group shooting for one, and we still aren't there yet despite traversing as far as the eye can see."
Lizardron introduced himself after a quick bow. Ka'ssol he called himself. A treasure hunter.
"Caius Dragelion" He introduced himself then, before motioning to the dragon who was presently trying to use his hind legs to scratch behind his ears. "And yes, this is Vordun. We're mercenaries belonging to the Dragonblades."
Ka'ssol seemed to have relaxed, which was nice. But Caius was still a bit on edge considering a behemoth had just nearly collided with Torensten with a full range of magic. But he'd warm up over time. The lizard asked about his abilities, which was a common question he had begun to realize when people saw him fight. "Hmm... How to explain..." He mused, scratching his beard. "I once served a King blessed with the power of the Crystal. I was entrusted with a portion of that power. Though your own leaping abilities are interesting, as is your weapon."
"Aye, it's not ssomethin' I'm gettin' in the NEAR future. I gotta work my sscaless off firssst." he admitted, nodding to the other man. He nodded first to Caius, and then to the dragon. "Caiuss and Vordun. Nice to meet th' both of you...formally." the bangaa chuckled. "Mercenariess, hmm? Well, sshould I asssume you all know the besst placess to pick up jobss? There'ss only sso much one can earn from...sscavenging." he admitted, forcing himself to slow his speech down so he sounded less...crude.
"If not, that'ss fine, but I ssee no harm in assking." he continued, before noting Caius' interest in his weapon. "Thiss? It wass a gift from a friend back...home. Bangaa are...lacklusster at magickss. Thiss weapon letss me put what little magickal abilitiess I have into thesse little capssuless and turn them into temporary weaponss." he said, holding up a small cylinder. It was silver-grey, but had two small bands near the top and bottom that glowed faintly. On one side, there stuck out a little '[' piece that seemed to attach to the socket inside the staff.
"Sso, kingss in your world can imbue otherss with power? How interessting..." he said, nodding, stroking his chin gently.
"Ass for my jumping prowess...well, it wass a family tradition, to take up that particular mantle. Dragoonss they're called. They channel the powerss of the mighty wyrmss for their own endss. Ssuch as leaping, breath weaponss, draining the life force of their opponentss to heal their own wounds. But they were particularly powerful against dragonss sspecifically. I wass...conssidered a black sheep for wanting to sstudy magickss over wearing the family armor and taking up the lance." he explained with a bit of a sigh. "I did learn ssome trickss, however. But...ass you can ssee, I never masstered it." he continued, smiling at his own ineptitude.
"Anywayss, whether or not yah know of good jobss, would it be too forward to assk you t' go back t' town with me?" he asked, slowly slipping back into his more casual, shortened way of talking. "Ain't too keen on runnin' into more trouble." the bangaa grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck and bowing his head, his split ears flopping a little with the motion.
"I'd hope you're prepared to work them to the bone then" Caius pointed out, making it very clear just how difficult an airship would be to obtain. The lizard asked Caius then if he knew the best place to pick up jobs, and he curtly nodded his head. "I primarily work out of Torensten. There has been much turmoil there in the last year, and there's always someone looking to get things done. Earning yourself a reputation for getting results will also help -- I've been approached personally many times as a result of that. I'd start there, if mercenary work is up your alley. Once you've gotten on your feet with it, I'd spread your wings, try Provo or Sonora. At the least, you won't get bored."
He was a scavenger, then. Interesting. Caius supposed he should have seen that coming, considering the circumstances that led to all of this. But it seemed that being a scavenger wasn't paying as much as Kas would like. Caius listened with interest as Kas would explain the properties of his weapon, noting it was a gift intended to make up for his lack of natural magical affinity. He studied the cylinder when shown with renewed interest. "I've modified one of my weapons, and designed the other myself. Yet I've never seen anything like this" Caius admitted. "These magic weapons of yours are certainly fascinating."
He wondered if there was a way to imbue his weapons with any sort of quirks... It was certainly worth looking into.
"In particular, the crystal bestows power on the Chosen King. Which he shares with those that fight at his side" Caius responded when Kas made his analysis on the Power of Kings, simplifying the explanation a little.
Dragoons... He'd heard of those. He was curious what the training was like to learn how to jump like that... It would certainly be a useful ability if he could learn to do as such. But while he'd heard of them in his world, and it seemed they existed in other worlds too, he never did figure out how to make that work.
"We have Dragoons in our world as well, but they're rare" Caius admitted. "I've always wondered how they gained their jumping prowess. Combining that sort of jumping power with my powers could make for an interesting combination, though I lack the knowledge of where to even start."
Kas asked if he could escort him back to town, and he nodded his head. "I think I can do that" He answered. "I can show you the bulletin board in Torensten as well when we get there."
