As the two of them began to head for the outskirts of Torensten once they had finished their drinks, Caius spoke up in earnest in order to answer Freya's question. He had asked of her own skillset, after all. It was only polite that he answered with his own should she ask, considering they would soon be working together.
"I wield what they refer to in my world as the "Power of Kings" He remarked, holding out a hand as his gunblade would materialize from thin air into his grip, in a burst of blue light. Seeing as they were a little short on time most likely, Caius figured a short demonstration mixed with an explanation could work. "The crystal bequeathed power to the King of Lucis, who then grants a portion of that power to those that make up his Kingsglaive. Protectors of Lucis. With it, I can summon my weapons" He explained, de-summoning his longsword before a short sword with a grip on each side would appear in his other hand. Caius grabbed each side and pulled them apart, revealing two daggers with the same triggers on them as the sword had.
"With the Power of Kings, I have access to limited warping capabilities, and some minor magic" He finished as one of the daggers disappeared. Once they left Torensten, Caius wouldn't stop until they came to a large set of rocks, leading up to a cliff face. Caius, knowing that with her jumping capabilities Freya would be able to follow, tossed the remaining dagger toward the tiny mountain as he then disappeared. Re-appearing in a flash of blue light where he was able to then catch the dagger, he allowed it to disappear as well when he landed on his feet. Caius walked to the cliff, looking upwards as if trying to spot something. And then a smile crossed his face.
A large, blue-scaled Fire Drake would come into view above them. Just a bit bigger than the largest of horses, the dragon would spot Caius and land on the cliff nearby him.
"Vordun!"
Caius laughed as he rushed forward, wrapping his arms around the neck of the dragon as Vordun let out a few sounds that could be interpreted as cooing. "Vordun, did you find them?" Caius asked the dragon, who let out a sound that could be interpreted as an affirmative, moving his head toward a direction as if indicating that was where they needed to go. "Can you lead us there?" Caius asked Vordun, who seemed to understand well enough as he unfurled his wings again and seemed to be about to take off when Caius stopped him. He looked back to Freya.
"Freya? This is Vordun. He should be able to lead us to the infestation quickly enough."
Upon exiting the bar, the two exited the port area and made their way into the city proper, where they could make their exit and hopefully meet up with Caius' friend. En route, the man saw fit to answer her own question, though the terms used meant little to her. Power of Kings? Demonstrating he materialised a blade of a configuration that was unknown to her, seemingly from thin air! Power bequeathed from a crystal to a king, who in turn shared a part of that power with a collective entity known as 'Kingsglaive'. Knight or something of the sort, she reasoned, though the truth of the matter was likely far more complex. Protectors, in whatever name they chose to go by, so maybe she wasn't too far off!
"So, I gather Lucis is the name of your kingdom, and you served the king and your country with this 'Power of Kings?", she asked. "This in turn allowed you to summon weapons at will", she added as he continued, explaining that he could 'warp' to a certain degree and even use magic!
"So the Power of Kings grants you access to magic? It truly must be a mighty gift indeed", she mused, though gifts like that always had a catch of some kind. She decided against further questioning, instead watching as he demonstrated more of his abilities. He had called her formidable, but she wondered just who among had the greatest power and skill as a warrior. Perhaps she would soon find out.
As if one cue, the sounds of wings could be heard above, a blue scaled beast bearing overheard, causing her to draw her spear and ready herself for combat! Surely it could not be? Whatever the case, the beast landed on a near by cliff, to which it received an unexpectedly jovial welcome from her comrade. Vordun? This was Vordun? She blinked, freezing for a split second, before relaxing her stance and sheathing her weapon.
"This is Vordun? Forgive me, you failed to mention that you friend was...not like yourself..." she spoke apologetically as the two were introduced. "It is my pleasure, Vordun", she spoke with a small bow, hoping that her earlier indiscretion would indeed be forgiven and that they could start anew.
"Sort of. I can summon my weapons" Caius corrected casually in turn. "I built them. But my abilities do allow me to get more use out of them. The Power of Kings is primarily meant as a compliment for your weapons, that is where its power truly shines. But yes, I served the King of Lucis, up until I was brought here" He added, looking to her. "I never did get a chance to ask. What was your role in Burmecia? You'd think that they would be able to make great use of a Dragoon. Or, well, Dragon Knight as you call it" He inquired, doing his best to remember to use the name that Freya was familiar with as a courtesy.
She seemed surprised when it turned out that Vordun was a dragon. "Well, I never said he was a man" Caius responded with a laugh. "And I spoke the truth when I said I've known Vordun his whole life, seeing as I raised him. As for me... Well, let's just say my life didn't exactly begin until he came around" He added, smiling faintly. Neither of them seemed to mind that Freya had initially been mistaken. Not many people would expect someone to have a drake for a companion, after all. And the attacks from Torensten nearly a year ago... Well, Caius wasn't exactly able to bring him into town now that he was full grown. He couldn't pretend that Vordun was his dog anymore.
"With that in mind, shall we get going?" Caius inquired toward Freya as he took out a whistle that he had borrowed from the stables. "I took the liberty of renting a chocobo before I went to find you" He explained as he handed the whistle to her. "Give it a blow and we'll head out immediately."
With that, he would reach over and stroke under Vordun's chin, inducing a coo from the drake as he then coaxed him to lean down. Once he did, Caius would climb onto the saddle and strap himself in. He would have just brought Freya aboard Vordun, but he had found with the last few people that trying to ride a dragon for the first time right before the mission had... Mixed results. Better to save it for people who had an interest in doing so, or if it were an emergency. If she had an interest, he would show her later, he didn't mind. For now, this was the most practically sound way to go about things.
So he could only summon his own weapons at will. That had been what she had meant to say, but alas those were not the words that came out and there was quite the distinctive difference between the two statements. Nonetheless, it was a fascinating concept, especially considering his claim that he had built them himself. She surmised that he must be quite the skilled smith, but that wasn't something they could make much use of on the field.
"I see", she responded thoughtfully as he then went on to ask more of her role in Burmecia. A slight grimace caught her almost by surprise as she thought of how she had effectively abandoned her home.
"It seems that Dragon Knights and these Dragoon are hardly different in their skills and purpose. You may use whichever term you wish", she told him, "As for my purpose, Dragon Knights are...were soldiers and protectors of Burmecia and her people", she began, wondering if there were in fact any left besides herself and an amnesiac Sir Fratley. Oh Fratley...
"Burmecia was destroyed, the survivors fled to our sister settlement of Cleyra, only for that too to be ground into dust in front of my very eyes! The attacks were sudden and swift. Burmecia had been at peace with the kingdom of Alexandria, but nonetheless they came and slaughtered both soldier and civilian alike. Had I not selfishly been away seeking my lost love...forgive me, you did not ask of my homeland", she continued before realising that she had perhaps gotten a little carried away. Instead, the conversation moved on to the dragon, whom this Caius had apparently known for a long time, raised even. Still, despite her assumption, he had indeed not lied or deliberately misled her.
"I should not have been presumptuous. It does indeed seem he has been a stalwart companion", she responded. It was indeed time that they were off, and so she took the offered whistle, glad of his foresight.
"Thank you, Caius.", she thanked him before doing just as he had suggested. It had been a while since she had ridden, so she could only hope the Chocobo would be forgiving. She need not have worried, as the large yellow bird approach, a loud 'kweh' signalling that it was indeed ready to embark and more importantly, showed no fear of the dragon that cooed into the human's hand, leaning down and allowing him to mount the saddle that she had only now noticed upon it's back. To tame such a beast to such a degree was impressive indeed, she thought as she mounted her own beast, grabbing onto the reins and glancing toward the dragon rider.
"On your leave, Vordun", she spoke to the dragon as the Chocobo pawed at the ground impatiently, eager to be on their way.
Caius stopped abruptly with a jolt when Freya would raise her voice, before opening up. He hadn't expected it, but he also hadn't meant to dredge up such horrible memories. Brown eyes softened as he stared at her, frowning as she explained that Burmecia had been destroyed in front of her eyes, and then their other home, Cleyra, suffered the same fate before her. He had seen his first home destroyed before him, and he had been devastated. But to see it happen twice? To lose everyone and everything like that not once, but twice? He couldn't imagine the pain she must feel. And then the feeling of failure... That was a feeling he knew well. To feel helpless, to feel useless, knowing there was nothing you could do. Nothing to do but watch them all be slaughtered... And wishing you could have done something, feeling you should have been able to do something and feeling horrible that you were too weak to do so. Much of what she seemed to feel and likely felt, he understood completely. She talked about searching for her lost love as well. He didn't... Understand the concept well, but this lost love was clearly important enough for her to leave. It wasn't like he could blame her in that case.
When she apologized, he shook his head. "No, no it's okay" He promised softly. "If you want to talk more about it, we can sit down and discuss it after we're finished here" He spoke up, giving her what he hoped to be some measure of a reassuring smile. He was still getting used to... Being in that kind of role. But he was trying. It was still... A lot to learn, really. But it was Celes who had shown him just how important being able to do these kinds of things truly was. There were just some things that a blade couldn't solve.
Once Freya was aboard the chocobo, Caius sounded the signal to Vordun who took off quickly. Caius finished strapping himself in as Vordun rocketed forward across the plains. Caius checked here and there to ensure that Freya was still keeping up with them, but otherwise served as the eyes for finding the horde. Before long, he saw the source of it. A large group of goblins could be seen smashing up what seemed to be what was left of a travellers camp. Some of them were dead though, Caius noticed, but the others paid the bodies no mind. He wasn't sure what had killed them, but whatever it was, it wasn't there right now. But there were traces in the ground of some kind of large monster that had been stomping about... Which led Caius to believe that most likely, something even bigger wasn't far.
The least they could do for now though, was deal with the goblins. But the goblins seemed to decide on sight that they were bored of the camp, and Caius and Freya were new, fresh meat. Some of them began to draw arrows and opened fire both on the chocobo on the ground, and on the dragon in the air.
Although Caius seemed to take heed in, perhaps even empathise with her story, now had not been the right time to recount the tale. Especially to a man she hardly knew, so she shook her head as he offered to allow her to speak more of it later.
"It is fine", she assured him, though the sadness still lingered in her eyes, "I have spoken too much already, and likely you have others matters to attend to. Though I do thank you for your kind offer", she added, grateful that at least he seemed somewhat compassionate. Right now though, she did not want compassion nor pity. Especially pity. Rather, they had a mission to focus on, and now was the time to do so. After pulling herself up onto the Chocobo's back, both dragon and rider took to the skies, the action of rocketing into the sky causing the bird to grow nervous, squawking and fidgeting on the spot. Luckily, Freya had a tight hold and was able to ease the creature enough for it to calm down and follow her commands. Now that it knew it wasn't about to be dragon lunch, the Chocobo was once again was keen to get going, so no sooner had the command been given than it galloped across the plains surrounding Torensten, following alongside though conscious of the large beast flying above and trying to avoid treading beneath it's shadow.
Though it was likely that Caius and his companion had seen them first, Freya sported a hoard of what appeared to be Goblins up ahead. She had also seen that they appeared to be rifling through the remains of what may have been a travelers camp. Some appeared to be dead, but the others paid them no mind. Had they been responsible for their comrades fall, or...
Freya pulled hard on the reigns, stopping the Chocobo just as it was about to plummet into what appeared to be a very large footprint. The bird squawked it's displeasure, but the main thing is that neither of them had been injured. There was time yet though, as the remaining members of the horde had noticed their arrival, along with that of their comrades in the sky. The Burmecian leaped from the Chocobo's back, her mount fleeing out of harms way as she drew her spear. Though some had taken to shooting arrows toward Vordun, there were those also targeting her. Let them come, she thought as she sprung into action, mindful of a creature large enough to leave such a large footprint and that it could still be close by.
"I don't mind" Caius promised when she insisted that she would be fine and that he must be busy. "I'll probably stick around a little longer before I hunt for my next job. Torensten is effectively one of my homes, after all."
That was all he could do, really. If she did not wish to accept his help in the matter, he wouldn't push anymore than he had already. And they had work to do for the time being. His gaze hardened as the creatures came into view and began firing on Vordun. "Vordun" Caius commanded calmly and firmly as Vordun opened his jaws and fire began to build up from the glands in his mouth. Caius would loosen his restraints as he fell to the side and held out his hands, using the restraints to hold him while he hung upside down from Vordun's underside.
"FIRA!"
Caius launched a Fira at the same time that Vordun had finished charging and had launched a fireball of his own. The attacks melted the arrows that came at them as they then struck the ground below, one by one, sending the goblins flying who were too close to the point of impact. With a cock of his head, Caius instructed for Vordun to land as Caius readjusted himself back on the saddle. The remaining goblins charged forward wielding shortswords, but Caius materialized his gunblade in his hand and slashed at one of them as Vordun passed them. Vordun meanwhile had been in the middle of bull-rushing forward and bowling a group of the goblins down, catching one in his jaws and crunching their body down before spitting it back at the others. Caius' gunblade disappeared as the shortsword from before took its place. Caius quickly split them into the twin daggers and pointed, letting Vordun do the moving as he began to fire rapid shots from both gun-daggers at the goblins, continuing to overwhelm them and keep them at bay. They were seriously outnumbered, which meant that Caius, Vordun and Freya had to keep up the pressure and keep them from overwhelming them.
Freya wouldn't be left alone though, and would have archers and shortsword wielding goblins to deal with. Caius wasn't able to attack them all, so she had her share to deal with. If either of them went down, the other ran the risk of being overwhelmed.... Making each side of this fight just as important as the other.
One of his homes? Yes, this man did seem the kind to get around, perhaps necessitating more than one living space. Freya herself had not called anywhere home during her absence from Burmecia, but now it had fallen...
Her thoughts quickly turned back to the field of battle, gripping her spear tightly as she pushed herself forward, letting the momentum carry her toward the oncoming horde. Now was the time to see if this Caius really did have her back, she supposed, as she thrusted her spear into the first to attempt to strike. The goblin let out a guttural cry as it slowly fell to the ground, it's last thoughts likely regretting it's actions. Others would try to surround her, but she leaped out of the way of the intended trap, just in time to avoid being caught up within Vordun's fiery breath! She had been surprised to see that he had not been the only one to create flames, noting that Caius had a gift not unlike the little black mage, Vivi. Perhaps this was another of his powers, she surmised, but she would not have time to dwell. They were outnumbered and should they grow careless, this encounter could end poorly.
Mindful of her allies presence, the Dragon Knight made sure to keep herself out of the way of so called friendly fire, instead rushing to the other side of the battlefield. It seemed that the horde viewed the others as a bigger threat. That would be a mistake, as some seemed to realise as they drew nearer. Most wielded short swords, but she had noticed a few archers attempting to reach higher ground in order to overwhelm her with their arrows. She would need to take care of them first, for if she were to go down, their numbers would likely be too great for Caius to handle. That, and if whatever had made the large footprint still lurked, she only hoped they had brought sufficient items to withstand the assault.
Caius let out a deep exhale as he steeled himself for the battle to come. They had cleared the way a bit for Freya to work her magic, and with her covered, now was the time to continue to attract attention and then deal with their own side of things. The monsters had found Caius and Vordun to be the bigger threat, and he was sure that Freya was smart enough to make the most of that. As Freya headed for the archers, Caius tossed one dagger at one of the goblins, suddenly Warp-Striking forward and slashing through their chest with the other, catching the first and tossing it at another to repeat the action over and over again. The goblins were completely taken off guard and overwhelmed by the intense speed of his strikes, as they were unable to predict where Caius was going to be and where he was going to strike from.
But the rapid Warp Strikes would come at a cost, he knew. His mana was depleting quickly, and while it would replenish itself using the Power of Kings, that could only be attained through not using his magic. And if he used up his magic... Well, Stasis would make things a hell of a lot harder. Glaives were powerful so long as they could moderate the use of their abilities. If they didn't... They would be rendered helpless. Every action he took was a gamble.
Caius tossed his blade upwards just as Vordun began charging up. As Caius warped upwards, Vordun took the hint and unleashed a stream of flames once more where Caius had once been, engulfing the goblins in flames. As they began to go down in droves, Caius landed on Vordun's back.
A volley of arrows were launched at the two of them though. Reacting quickly, Caius summoned his barrier to block them from himself and Vordun. Freya was going to have to act quickly. This barrier used a lot of magic...
As if that weren't bad enough, a loud rumbling could be heard, as the ground began to shake... Caius' eyes widened, and he certainly hoped that Freya could finish the archers quickly.
