"Yeah. Yeah, we have" Caius spoke softly, his gaze darting away a moment as Yuna brought up what was still a very difficult subject for him. He had mentioned it, sure, but it was difficult for him to even fathom getting into detail about his family. He was pretty sure that "date" with Celes had been the last time he'd felt comfortable enough to open up about them, and scarcely any mention had been uttered since. He didn't know if he could talk about them so easily. Teedus' death, by the sounds of it, had been heroic. He went out on his terms and lived his life to the fullest in the time he got. Of course Yuna would want to honor him, he was a hero and a hero, as Teedus was, deserved to be held in the highest regard.
Caius' family didn't get that. They didn't even get an honorable death. They were slaughtered like animals on some vindictive bastard's whims, their bodies manipulated like puppets purely out of spite. And Caius had unconsciously done everything possible to repress that horrific sight since. He didn't know when he would be ready to talk about it, if ever.
He was, thankfully, driven from some difficult thoughts as Yuna told him her initial guess about his age. Caius made an insulted face at that, though he didn't seem to actually take it that seriously. "Sheesh. I'm 22, maybe 23. Talk about a headache" Caius remarked with a small laugh and a huff. "Guess keeping this beard looking professional backfired. Maybe I should shave after all" he mused aloud as he raised a hand to cover his beard, just for her to see what it would probably look like. The face that stared back at her might provide some deja vu in retrospect, however. "Or go all in and just grow it out. Lean into that rugged mercenary look."
Unfortunately, it didn't sound like Yuna would be able to do anything about older injuries. If Ignis really had lost his sight... It might be too late to save it now. The mercenary's shoulders sagged a bit as he realized this. Caius had brought it up with slight hopes she might be able to do something, but he supposed even her healing magic had its limits. He decided not to vocalize this disappointment, knowing she was doing more than enough while she was swamped with work as-is.
"Tired, not injured" Caius answered truthfully when Yuna seemed to figure out what he had been inferring. "My part was... Frustratingly miniscule compared to what the others are going through. I wanted to do more, but I couldn't risk going inside. I had you and the others to think about."
He'd gone through his own food pretty quickly once he put his mind to it, and he began to drink it, and his parched throat, down soon after. "Alex was part of the group that went in. Ironically enough, I told him to be the distraction myself because the others refused to go anywhere near him after what happened," Caius admitted quietly. "He was there for the planning. It was... Rough. He tried to put a woman we knew to sleep when she walked in. Then everyone started fighting. Alex said some really nasty stuff to Prompto, humiliated him while knowing he had been soft on that girl back in Eos. Almost came to blows. Afterwards, I tried to find a hotel to sleep off the headache, but the manager of some sleazy bathhouse tried to get me to try it if I could find a second person. Then my headache followed me. And that's how I found out about Alex's intentions for the astrals of this world."
He let out a long sigh at that. No wonder he had taken to drinking. "Then I run into Lumina. Whose been hiding out in Sonora because the starscourge in her's spreading. As mentioned I've been using my magic to keep it away, but it's incredibly draining on me. Sonora doesn't have too much aether, either, it's harder to replenish my magic. Physically and mentally, I'm exhausted. Still worried about Noctis and them, too."
Caius buried his cheek in his palm. "Can't even bring myself to be the kind of person that hopes Alex is dead. Not even after he basically wished death on Lumina. Asshole."

[attr=class, bulk] Caius quietly acknowledged that he had lost his family too, but he seemed to have no desire to talk about that right now. Yuna understood—reminiscing about Tidus was hard enough without bringing her parents into it, and Caius was worried enough about Lumina without needing to focus on other people he’d lost. That was a topic best saved for another time, so Yuna quietly let it drop.
Thankfully Caius’ apparent age was a much lighter turn of the conversation. When he covered up the bottom half of his face to show her how he’d look without a beard, Yuna very nearly choked on her water. “Oh no,” she said with a laugh as she heavily set the glass back down. “I think I can confirm that it’s the beard, but I also don’t think you should shave it.” Was there a polite way to tell somebody that they had a baby face without their facial hair? There almost certainly wasn’t, so Yuna did her best to hide her giggling. “And I know how old you are now, but it did surprise me the first time I learned. I’m sorry to say.”
When Yuna dredged up the topic of how their jail break had gone, Caius admitted that he was exhausted. Apparently the actual planning for it had been a disaster because of Alex and then they had…shared a sleazy bathouse together? There may have been more to unpack there, but Yuna was honestly afraid to ask. She just turned a bit red and nodded quickly as he went on about everything else he was worried about.
“I think it’s a good thing you don’t wish anyone dead, but I’m sorry he said that about her.” That was a pretty low blow considering how worried Caius was. “If he died though, I’ll be sure to send him so he won’t come back,” Yuna said a bit primly as she finally finished up her food and sat back. That had probably come out as much more of a threat than she had meant it, but it was more of a fact for her than anything. “Thank you again for lunch, by the way. And I appreciate the warning…”

Caius Lucis Caelum
He couldn’t talk about it, especially not right now. It was an incredibly difficult conversation on its own, and while he had at least given Yuna the gist of what had happened once before, he was not eager at all to revisit it. Talking about his family was something he needed to be in the right headspace for, and right now? He wasn’t even remotely near that headspace. Right now, his focus was on protecting his new family. No matter what it takes to do so.
Caius scratched his beard, visibly confused as to Yuna’s mixed messaging. It made him look far older, but he shouldn’t shave it? Why not? He did like how the beard looked, which was part of why he didn’t put more effort into shaving it. Maybe that was why? He didn’t know. He wasn’t really experienced in what people usually think looks good. “I mean, I guess if you don’t want me to shave it, I won’t? I don’t understand why, though” he admitted with a shrug. Though it made him wonder… Just how old did Celes think he was?
He snorted a bit, indignantly, at that thought. Probably better not to think about it. Or how old Lumina thought he was – though he wasn’t sure if that mattered considering she was going to be far older than him either way.
“At least it probably won’t matter to Lumina.”
He didn’t know how to explain that part to Yuna either – that he was entangled with a woman centuries his senior. Yuna also seemed… Almost frightened at the story about Alex. Caius blinked a few times again, unsure if he had said something wrong. Caius’ lack of knowledge in language did not serve him well here, without context. But while he had been polishing off his drink, it shot up his nose when Yuna claimed if he did die, she’d make sure he wouldn’t come back. Caius coughed, hacked and wheezed as he tried to dry out his nose with his sleeve. That wasn’t supposed to sound threatening, but…
“Let’s just hope he doesn’t show up. If he tries to harm you, you might have to perform that sending after all.”

[attr=class, bulk] Caius seemed pretty confused about why Yuna was so adamant that he should not shave the beard, and she refrained from answering by taking a large drink of water. Somehow she didn’t think he’d appreciate being told that he looked like Prompto. Thankfully he didn’t seem to be waiting for an answer, and he moved on by saying that he didn’t think Lumina minded what he looked like either way. “And her opinion matters the most after yours of course,” Yuna said with a slight smile. That’s really what it boiled down to after all.
Yuna’s comment about sending Alex really had come out as way more of a threat than she’d intended. To her it was just a fact—she performed the sending when people died so that they wouldn’t come back—and Alex seemed like he would make a particularly troublesome unsent anyway. Still, she had to laugh herself when Caius choked on his drink and was sent straight into a coughing fit. “I’m sorry!” She apologized in between giggles as she pushed some unused napkins across the table towards him. “And hopefully it won’t come to that. I really do want to see if this can be resolved by talking first. But as promised, I’ll take someone with me. I won’t go alone.” Caius and Celes were both fairly busy lately, but there were the people at her clinic too. Monori was from the same world as Alex, and Dion did keep saying that he owed her a favor.
Though come to think of it, maybe bringing Bahamut along would only make the situation worse. She’d have to ask Dion to be on his best behavior if he accompanied her.
“Ready to head back?” Yuna asked with a slight smile, since they’d both finished their food and the conversation seemed to be wrapping up a little. “I know you still have a long trip back to Torensten ahead of you.” And he’d already refused the guest room unfortunately. Getting Caius to rest was harder than finding one needle on a cactuar sometimes.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Perhaps it was best that Caius hadn’t shaved the beard, or considering who he resembled, the impending panic attack might have come much sooner. At least her statement didn’t seem to bother him that much, aside from annoy him a bit. The only thing that impacted him much was the drink that had gone up his nose thanks to Yuna’s unintentionally threatening statement about Alex. Caius hacked and gagged and snorted as he tried to keep the beverage from further stinging his nostrils, but it had shot pretty good into there.
Fortunately, Yuna provided napkins, some of which wound up going up his nose to absorb the liquid. The coughing didn’t stop, but it seemed to ease some as he managed to start breathing better after some time. Thank the Astrals (how long would he be thanking them for, is another story) that he hadn’t chosen anything alcoholic this time, or it would have been seriously nasty. That problem would be saved for Cindy’s Sorel roast.
Caius nodded along as Yuna promised to try to handle it non-violently and bring someone along just in case, still trying to get his breath back after Yuna had accidentally knocked it out of him. But he did manage to say “I don’t know if he’s the kind to listen. I already tried, and you’ve heard how that turned out. He’s too stupid to negotiate with smoothly” without mincing words in the slightest.
“Aye, let us return” Caius agreed as his voice finally began to return to normal. He would pay for their meal as promised. “Thank you for hearing me out, Yuna. Hopefully by the end of this, none will come to bother you again. This city needs you, and your clinic. I intend to ensure you may continue to exist here in peace, and in happiness.”
Though a thought came to him, before he could leave. He had intended to wait to see for himself, but…
“I’m sure I will find out when I get there. But has Miss Chere been well? I haven’t seen her in…”
A very, very long time. Not since she left for Provo in the first place.

[attr=class, bulk] The napkins seemed to help at least after Caius choked on his drink. Poor guy—Yuna really hadn’t meant to say something funny right when he was taking a sip—but the damage was done. Thankfully he seemed to take control of his coughing fit eventually, and he chimed in on Yuna’s plan to try to negotiate with Alex. He didn’t seem to have much faith that it would work since he’d already gone that route, and Yuna shot him a slightly sad smile in return. “I know. But I still have to try. I don’t want to go in hostile against someone I’ve never even met.” She at least wanted the chance to resolve this peacefully. The rest was up to Alex.
Caius agreed that it was time to return to the clinic, and Yuna bowed her head in thanks when he paid for the meal as promised. “Thank you for lunch. And for the warning. I really do appreciate you looking out for me.” As she climbed out of the booth, he also asked her a last question about Celes, which made Yuna pause and consider how to answer that. “I don’t think I quite gave her the vacation that she needed,” she admitted rather sheepishly. “She’s doing well, but she seemed like she’s been running herself ragged lately, and then she spent most of her time here helping me with recruiting employees. I feel really bad about that.” It had helped Yuna immensely, but it probably wasn’t the break from her duties that the general had needed. “I hope that next time she visits me she can take it easier.” Honestly, between the three of them, the Dragonblades were not the best when it came to taking breaks. Maybe once all of these issues died down.
As they reached the outside of the restaurant, Yuna turned to face Caius since he’d mentioned that he’d be leaving for Torensten right after lunch. “You’re sure I can’t get you to stay and rest tonight?” She had a feeling that she knew the answer with how worried he was about Lumina and how quickly he wanted to get back to Torensten. It was worth the question though.

"Didn't stop him from trying to sabotage our business" Caius muttered as Yuna insisted she shouldn't be hostile to someone she had never met. He understood wanting to resolve this peacefully, but he had already tried. Alex just wasn't the type to listen, it seemed. But who knows? Maybe Yuna would have better luck than he did. She did have that natural likeability to her, after all. Even if he still couldn't help but worry for her. He supposed that's just how it is when you have something resembling family.
As the two of them climbed out of the booth, and Caius left a tip on the way out, Caius listened as Yuna admitted Celes had been running herself ragged. "I should have known. She hasn't changed one bit since she left, then" Caius remarked, letting out a long sigh. "She chose to stay at the Rest and run all the office and paperwork things herself for the longest time, without ever bringing up that she could use some help or to train some staff to do some of that work. She ran herself ragged doing the work of multiple people by herself, before she finally agreed to hiring help only when she ran herself into needing time away. I had hoped it would be healthy for her, but..."
The mercenary shook his head, filing his hair out of his face. "I've hired some good help since, so hopefully she can take it a bit easier. I'll treat her to dinner when I get a chance, it sounds like she could use it it. Thank you for the update."
Something Caius actually did do, immediately after seeing Celes at the Rest. While he had intended to do it later, well... One look at Celes had said the best time was right then and there. As they ventured outside however, Yuna tried again to get him to stay. Another sigh answered that one.
"Alright, you win. If there's a spare room that isn't being used for patients, I'll gratefully accept your hospitality" Caius gave in finally. He'd probably regret that choice of words. "I'll leave in the morning. It'll give me a chance to check out the clinic and prepare a report for Celes. She'll want to know how you're doing."

[attr=class, bulk] Caius muttered something about how Yuna and Alex being strangers hadn’t stopped the other blond man from trying to sabotage their business. That was an excellent point that the summoner couldn’t refute, so instead she just gave a slightly tired laugh. “Well, that’s true. I’m trying to take the higher road though.” Being petty felt nice in the short-term, but she didn’t want to escalate any tensions by stooping to his level. She’d try to treat him as a stranger, even if that was hard when she’d heard so many stories.
Caius didn’t seem happy to hear that Celes had continued to run herself ragged, but he didn’t seem particularly surprised either. Still, everything that he accused the blonde woman of doing sounded strangely familiar…“You know, maybe we could all work on taking a break,” Yuna said with a laugh. “I’m glad you hired some more people though. Monori and Lyari have been a big help up here too. Hopefully Celes can rest easier now.”
As they exited the restaurant, Yuna tried one last time to get Caius to stay so he could actually get a good night’s sleep in between traveling to another city. To her surprise, he actually agreed this time, so maybe he really was exhausted. Normally it was hard to get him to slow down. “You’re in luck,” she said in response to his question on if there was a free room. “Dion’s been staying with Terence downstairs, so the room he was using is free upstairs. I’ll put some fresh sheets on the bed, and then you should be good to go.” He also said that he would be preparing a report on the clinic for Celes, which made Yuna try not to smile. That didn’t sound particularly restful, but it was a start. “Sure, I haven’t even given you the tour yet,” she said, starting to head back home with Caius in tow. “I hope you like it.”
It was certainly less in need of help than when Celes had found it.

Caius Lucis Caelum
“Do as you feel to be best, Yuna. Just try not to forget that’s exactly what I tried to do” Caius pointed out with a bittersweet smile. He wished her the best, truly, but it wasn’t her capabilities that he didn’t trust. Sure, Caius had gotten woefully drunk, and pointed a knife at him. But he had tried to be civil, very civil, far more civil than he wanted to be after Alex had already threatened Yuna. Caius had repressed every urge to gut him right then and there in said attempt to be civil, and it had gotten him nowhere. But then again… Alex seemed to be far more inclined towards women. Perhaps that fact alone would give Yuna an advantage that Caius did not possess, on account he lacked the parts. Just so long as he didn’t try to put Yuna to sleep.
“I hope Celes is still standing when I return. I need to get back and support her as quickly as I can” Caius remarked as Yuna claimed they all needed a break. Perhaps they did, but he’d rather Celes’ break not be in a hospital bed. “That woman has been on a neverending cycle of running herself into the ground since the day I met her. She needs a break more than anyone else. A real break, this time. I might have to encourage her to take that vacation the resort in the Pale Coast offered us some time ago.”
If Tomoe didn’t try to push him to take it first. In his view, however, Tomoe was just getting too worked up, he was tired but nothing a bit of sleep wouldn’t fix. The complete and utter shitshow he had in fact been bearing the brunt of however, was soon to come spilling out. And with it, just how little a difference between the two there really was.
Caius didn’t know why he had agreed to stay, when he had been so adamant before. Maybe he was more tired than he was allowing himself to believe, he didn’t know. But he found himself just… Without the energy left to argue with Yuna on it further. He didn’t know who Dion and Terence were either, but she’d probably tell him on the way back, so he just nodded in kind. Yuna then brought up a tour, to another nod. “I’m sure I will.”
