The Dragonblade
So she had used egi originally. That was actually good. If her primary use of summons was through egi, maybe… Could he head Alex off? Stop this before it starts? But she also didn’t know if it was the same here. If she was utilizing the real Shiva… She did so unknowingly.
“It’s not your fault that you don’t know. I wish I had known of his intentions sooner, I could have warned you long ago. He confided his intentions to me and we almost came to blows. I offered to investigate for him, but he sees me, and all others, as below him. Comes with being his world’s retired “Hero” apparently.”
His disdain for Alex wasn’t hidden whatsoever. The so-called “Warrior Of Light” hadn’t earned any level of respect. Not after what he had done. But he couldn’t tell Yuna about the tempering risk. He still didn’t know Shiva’s abilities in this world or if it had hold over Yuna. It was best to be cautious for now, and not risk Shiva’s ire.
Unsurprisingly, Yuna would ask what was going on in Sonora, since he had made it clear the business with Noctis wasn’t his only business there. He hadn’t wanted to worry Yuna, but… “The King is fine. He should be arriving in Provo shortly, hopefully you might even meet him soon. But the friend that’s in trouble, she’s… I guess you could say she’s special to me.”
That would probably set off some flags, he was sure, considering his last conversation with Yuna. That felt like a lifetime ago, didn’t it?
“A lot’s happened while you and Celes have been busy here. But this woman, she’s in trouble. Serious trouble. Do you… Remember that man you fought in that hospital? The one who spread blight that originated from my world. His… Blight, melded with some kind of parasite. One whose last host was taken over fully, and slaughtered hundreds before the body was destroyed. It’s now within her. And time is running out. I owe it to her, and to her family that took me in as their own without a second thought, to save her.”
Staff would arrive and ask for their orders. Caius found something hastily and ordered then. He took a deep breath, thinking over his words as he turned back to Yuna once she was settled with hers.
“In a cruel twist of fate, my power seems to be the only thing that can push it back, even if only just temporarily. Yet, it’s not strong enough to push it out entirely…” he admitted softly, chewing the inside of his cheek. “… -I’m- not strong enough.”
How many times now had he blamed himself and his inadequacies for where Lumina was now? He didn’t know. But he had been holding it in for some time. It wasn’t something he could just say to Noctis, after all. It would just make him feel worse. But Yuna… Yuna was always understanding, he knew.
Caius stared down at his hands a moment, a long frown forming as though he were cursing them. Cursing himself. “For everything that I’ve been through, all that I’ve done to get better. It’s not enough. If I’d been born in the Lucian line and had access to their nigh-infinite wells of power within the Ring, been trained almost since birth in their use, maybe… Maybe she would be alright. But I’m not. I’m not enough to get the job done, or to protect one of the people I cherish most. But perhaps Noctis will be.”
He let out a small, bitter laugh at the irony. For the first time in a long while, he let his deepest, bitterest thoughts show. Unrestrained, a side he didn’t like to show.
“Once more, I find myself stuck, holding the enemy at bay… Waiting for the Chosen King to come to my rescue — to do what I could not.”
At the very least, Yuna was aware of Sephiroth, and what Cloud had said. That was good. At least she knew the threat they may face. And was willing to take backup if she could. “I’ll see what one of us can do. Sephiroth apparently has no memory of his atrocities… But he didn’t exactly hesitate to cause the damage he did in Provo, either. We may end up at war with the Stones, as much as I would like to avoid that outcome. Be ready for anything.”

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
[attr=class, bulk] Caius said that it wasn’t her fault that she didn’t know if Shiva was an egi or not, and that he wished Alex would have just let him investigate alone first. “He was considered a hero in his world?” Yuna asked, tilting her head at that new piece of information. She didn’t know a lot about Alex, so it was good to absorb what she could. “I guess that’s why he’s dealt with things like this before…” Perhaps summons had threatened his old world, and that was why Alex was having such a knee-jerk reaction to Shiva. It still didn’t excuse threatening her and Caius, but it would explain it at least.
When Caius had first said that Alex had taunted him over one of his friends, Yuna had been sure that meant his group had run into trouble up in Sonora. Apparently he was actually referring to a girl that the summoner had yet to meet though, and Yuna looked at him in surprise as Caius admitted that she was special to him. “Wait, you two are-…Really? I had no idea. I mean, I’m happy for you of course!” Yuna flushed a bit, hoping that last part didn’t sound too tacked on. She was just genuinely caught off-guard. It had been quite a long time since she and Caius had seen each other though. If she could start a whole new career in Provo, then he had the time to start a new relationship.
Yuna quickly looked more serious though when Caius explained that his girlfriend was in trouble. She apparently had an even more dangerous version of the plague that Ardyn had spread around Provo for a time, and the summoner winced as she remembered watching a man turn into a daemon in front of her. Ardyn had just sat back to watch as he’d set it upon her…
Before she could really say anything to that horrible news, the waiter came back to take their orders, and Yuna hurriedly looked down at her forgotten menu. Thankfully she’d been here before, so she was able to quickly order a sandwich that she remembered liking. After he’d walked away again, Caius seemed to fall into a bit of despair. Yuna couldn’t say that she blamed him. He seemed to really like this woman, and to be unable to do much for her as she slowly got worse must have been awful. Yuna couldn’t imagine the feeling of losing someone over time. She’d lost Tidus so abruptly, since even up until the end, he’d never told her that he would fade away once Sin was defeated. She’d never quite forgiven him for that, but then, maybe she wouldn’t have been able to fight so hard if she’d known what would happen.
“Caius…” Wanting to comfort him, Yuna reached across the table and put her hand over his. “You can’t blame yourself for not being born in a certain family. It sounds like you’re doing more for her than anyone else could. You’re one of the strongest people I know. In combat and out of it.” He also seemed to feel bitter about having to rely on King Noctis to do the full job for him, and Yuna smiled a little sadly at that part as she took her hand back. “I know that must be frustrating, but you’ve done plenty without him. And if he’s as good a man as you’ve made him out to be, then I’m sure he doesn’t mind helping.”
Yuna didn’t know if that would help him feel better or not, but she hoped that he and his king together would be able to cure the blight. “And when she’s better, I fully demand to meet her,” Yuna added with a slight smile. Any woman who could make Caius confess was probably pretty special. Or just incredibly up-front about what she wanted. Yuna adored her friend of course, but he could be a tad dense about this sort of thing unless it was waving a red flag in his face.
Caius finished up by saying that they might end up at war with the Rising Stones, which made her earlier smile fade. “I’m sorry. I don’t want that to happen because of me. That’s why I’d like to talk this out if possible, but I do know that some things are always destined to end in a fight…”
On that dour note, their food was delivered to the table. Yuna was suddenly feeling a bit less hungry though.

The Dragonblade
Wow, Yuna jumped to that conclusion really fast. He easily could have meant platonically. Considering what had happened the last time he had admitted to affection for another person however, maybe he should have seen that coming. Still… Despite them being only “prospective” partners, at this point Yuna wasn’t exactly wrong.
Truthfully, Caius already knew what his feelings were now. After spending all this time with Lumina, he honestly could no longer remember a time that he didn’t see her in that light. The hard part was telling her that he wanted to be more than “prospective”.
“It’s… More complicated than that, but you’re not far off the mark either” he admitted softly, cheeks reddening slightly as he averted his gaze. At least she didn’t ask what happened with Celes. He didn’t think he was ready for that conversation. Not with Yuna, anyway. If that was to ever be hashed out, it was best hashed out with the lady herself. While Caius had thought that bit of business finished when Celes had adamantly stated she was not interested in a romantic relationship, in hindsight her behavior after the fact had been… Suspect. Caius had been too blind to see it back then, but he had a feeling that wasn’t over just yet. He wasn’t sure how, but…
Yuna did her best to comfort Caius. And he really did appreciate it. He didn't even stop her from touching him, though he tensed a moment as she did. Still, he took a breath and allowed the contact. She had initiated more than that before, and he understood the intention, even if he wasn't used to it. Her words rang strongly, considering if anyone here was the beacon of strength, it was her.
Though the thought made him smile slightly.
"You say that like you aren't literally the strongest person you know. Shiva summoning aside, nobody could have handled running the clinic the way you have. I've hung around enough to hear the stories. You really have done something amazing despite the mountain you've had to climb to do it, and I see why Celes believed in you enough to ensure it was funded" Caius did point out. Sure, it came out of any funding they had intended to try and start a proper Provo branch. Even had to sell that property they had been holding onto in order to ensure the clinic wouldn't go under. But after seeing all that? The strength Yuna showed? The people they had helped? It was worth it.
There was more than one way to accomplish their mission.
He let out a sigh, then. "I know he won't mind. He already agreed to do it. But that's the problem. I've worked so hard to ensure I never have to feel helpless again, watching the people I love die while I wait for Noctis to fix all my problems. I can't rely on him forever, and while I've done some..."
Wait, did he say people he loved? In regards to Lumina? Sure, there was platonic, but he knew Yuna wouldn't take it that way. And well, really...
She still wouldn't be off the mark.
He supposed he knew what he needed to talk to Lumina about, while he still could. So he decided to just... Speak candidly. "She has spent so much of her life protecting others. Sacrificed so much. She deserves the world, both as a person... And in a partner. She deserves for someone to step in and help her for once. How can I call myself her partner when I can't do that? When this parasite is threatening to take her away, and torch everything she ever worked for -- and I can hardly do anything? I've only ever been good at fighting, I'm not an amazing healer like you, or Celes, I can't even give your clinic patients more than field-level aid to relieve their pain for a bit, which you two could do in your sleep. I'm not able to use the light magic that Noctis can with the Ring, my borrowed abilities don't compare."
That was heavier than he had intended, but it was how he felt. His shoulders slumped as he stated what he had been hiding. "For the first time since I got here... I can't punch my way out of this problem. And I hate myself for it."
Another breath. That was hard to admit, but... It was the truth. It was a dark truth he had been holding onto for some time, bottling it up and letting it fester without release.
Despite it all though, he managed a smirk when Yuna demanded to meet Lumina when she was better. When, she said. He really did want to think that. Though he supposed it was about time he told her about the girl as well. And Caius' expression did actually brighten a bit as he began to speak on it.
“Her name is Lumina. After Cloud and Sephiroth leveled the square I did patrols for a few days to keep monsters from the city. I saved a girl from a Bomb, and she became… Partial, to me. When her family moved to Torensten she started visiting the Rest, and decided she was going to set me up. With her sister. Who used to be a warrior and her own world’s savior, but herself retired after coming here. We had a lot in common, and… She could understand what I’ve gone through in ways others can’t. We ended up helping each other out a great deal, and we wound up spending a lot of time together."
Caius scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "She… Decided fairly quickly what she wanted. But I needed time. I’ve never been in a relationship and was still coming to terms with what romantic feelings actually are. I asked her for patience, which she gave happily. Since I was still training the administrative staff while Celes was on her “vacation”, I ended up seeing her almost every day for some time. I… Wish I had known our time may be short. Maybe I would have worked up the courage to tell her how I feel sooner. I know now how I feel and what it means, for as much time as it has taken, but I haven’t confessed. Though I think she already knows, I still want to tell her. While I still can."
And there it was. The biggest, deepest thing he had been hiding. It really was a far-cry from the last time they had spoken of the subject. Now, compared to before... He actually spoke with real, true confidence on the matter. Because here and now, he knew what he wanted.
"I will do anything to save her. She's made me happy in ways that I can't describe... And I owe it to her to ensure she and her family can have that same happiness. No matter what it takes."
As for the Stones? Yuna felt guilty about the possibility of war, but Caius shook his head. "It won't be because of you. It will be because Alex was stupid enough to try. We'll try diplomacy. Bahamut knows we have enough problems as it is."

[attr=class, bulk] Caius admitted that Yuna wasn’t entirely off the mark with what she’d assumed about him and the girl that he’d mentioned, and the summoner brightened at the admission. “You’ve come a long way since the last time we talked about something like this, you know,” she said with a slight smile. He hadn’t seemed sure of what he’d wanted then, or even if a relationship was something he’d ever want. This new girl must have been really special to have changed his outlook so much
Caius didn’t seem entirely comfortable when Yuna tried to comfort him, so she pulled her hand back from his fairly quickly. She didn’t take it personally since she knew he wasn’t as physically affectionate with his friends as she was. Instead she just smiled and looked off to the side when he praised her for everything she’d done with the clinic. “I couldn’t have done it alone. I appreciate everything you and Celes did to help set it up.” At this point they mostly made enough to keep up with operations, but she never would have had the money upfront for a suitable property without their help. Not to mention everything that Celes had done to help with recruiting.
The blond man once again seemed frustrated at his own helplessness in the face of the parasite, but Yuna just shook her head. “No one can fix everything themselves, Caius. But you don’t have to. You’ve got a pretty big network here on Zephon, you know. And I’m sure she just appreciates how hard you’re trying to help her.”
He did seem to cheer up a little as he told her the story of how they’d met, and Yuna had to laugh a little when she learned that the two of them were set up by Lumina’s sister. “Well, at least you already have her family’s support then,” she teased, though she grew more solemn when he said that he wanted to tell Lumina how he felt while there was still time. “I think you should,” she said more seriously as she folded her hands in her lap. “I…don’t talk about him much, but there was a boy back on Spira. I only told him how I felt right before the end. I wish I had sooner.” She paused before brushing a strand of her hair behind one ear and looking up at Caius. “I don’t think you’ll regret speaking to her honestly. But you might if you don’t.” It had taken her a long time to come to terms with losing Tidus. Yuna didn’t want the same thing to happen to Caius.
The talk eventually came back around to Alex and the Rising Stones, which was the point of him coming to warn her in the first place. Her friend clearly had a lot on his plate right now though, so Yuna was happy to listen if he needed to get some of it off his chest. “Thank you. I do think I’ll go meet with Alex soon, but I won’t go alone. I promise.” If anything could have cured her of trying to solve problems on her own, it was everything that had happened with Maester Seymour.

The Dragonblade
Had he come a long way? Maybe. Going from being unsure about it, but seeing Yuna's logic in the likelihood he held romantic feelings for someone that he knew from the start didn't feel the same way, and then vowing not to tell of these feelings -- to actually managing to wove himself into something resembling a healthy relationship. Well, that was definitely progress, he supposed. It had been a long and winding road to get here, and there were still a mountain of problems before he and Lumina could have what could be considered a proper, healthy relationship. But it was a start. A beacon, a glimmer of hope. Caius didn't know what to say on that, so he just nodded his head.
Then shook his head when Yuna thanked him for the help monetarily. "No. Thank you. Your dedication proved there's more than one way to accomplish our mission" Caius admitted, the smallest dregs of a smile forming. "If I could have found a way to afford transitioning to where we could do our peacekeeping side of things full time, including being able to help people who are hurt -- I think I would have wanted to do that if that was what the guild wanted. I don't see a way to make that work in that exact way, but... Your clinic is the closest thing, and I'm grateful for all that you do for the people here. I hope Provo's people know how fortunate they are to have you, Yuna."
His expression had only further brightened while talking about Lumina, though it was marred some by the problem at hand. The threat of losing her was at times more than he could take. He had driven himself to exhaustion in his efforts to save her, both physically and mentally he was falling apart. They had to save her, and soon. Yuna did her best to tell him that he had done enough, that he didn't have to do it alone, and that she was sure Lumina appreciated all he had done. But he still wished he could do more himself.
"A big network, huh" he muttered in thought. He hadn't really thought of it that way. They were just... People he had met, worked with, people he liked, people he cared about. He hadn't thought to consider them as a network or assets. It was the one thing he had never been able to be fully practical on. Even Noctis, he had only asked for help from because he didn't have any other choice. It was Noctis, or nothing. Yet, that was what Yuna meant, wasn't it? He didn't have to do this alone. Noctis had agreed to help, and he had others who could help if he needed it.
It was just hard, sometimes, to remember that he didn't have to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.
But then Yuna mentioned a boy. A boy she had held romantic feelings for. Suddenly, why she had tried to support him and encourage him in his previous affections for Celes, and did so now, were clear. She had only gained the courage to confess when it was too late. And... Maybe it was too late for him as well. Even if he did confess now, he stood to lose her soon after. He had waited too long, yet she was right that even then... If he didn't now, he might not ever get the chance.
Caius took a deep breath, then. "You're right," he admitted softly. "Better now than never. I will find the right time to... Broach it."
Gods that sounded awkward, but Caius didn't know how else to word an intention to confess when the opportunity struck. Even now, this was still all so new to him. "Thank you for telling me about your experience. I'm sorry for what happened. What was his name?"
The least he could do after making Yuna listen to all that, was to offer his own shoulder, should she need it. It was likely the only thing that he could do, too. But she had more than earned that. So asking the boy's name was his way of offering. Yuna then promised to ensure she wouldn't face Alex alone, and Caius nodded gratefully.
"Good. We can't afford to lose you, Yuna. As an important member of our organization... And as a friend. As someone I consider family."
It was only after meeting Lumina that Caius had found the courage to start to be honest with how he felt. Not just in giving someone praise as a warrior or as a human being, but in how he actually saw them when it related to himself. More than just "I care for your well-being", but being able to correlate them to a specific term of endearment as well. To be able to finally start to move on from losing his family... And find happiness in the one that he had found.
A lot really had changed.

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
[attr=class, bulk] Caius shared a really heart-felt view of what she’d been doing here in Provo, which made Yuna smile over at him a little sheepishly. “Thank you, Caius. It was definitely rough going at first, and it still has bad days. But now that it’s growing and other people are involved…I’m really seeing what the place could be. I hope we can keep it going for a while.” She wasn’t too surprised that the kingsglaive wished he could do more peacekeeping jobs like that full-time. For as fierce of a fighter as he was, he’d always seemed like a fairly gentle soul.
Two years down the line, and it was still hard for Yuna to talk about her blond guardian. She was glad that Caius seemed to get the gist of what she was trying to say though, and after a pause, he confirmed that he would talk to Lumina while there was still time. “I’m glad. I hope she is too,” she said with a slightly sad smile that turned fonder when he asked for the boy’s name that she’d mentioned. “Tidus.”
It was the first time that she’d said his name aloud in a long time, and Yuna glanced down at her untouched lunch as she thought of his brash personality and cheerful grin. “He was one of my guardians, though using a sword was new to him. He was one of the best blitzball players I’d ever seen, and he could hold his breath underwater like it was nothing.” Despite putting off talking about him, she was having a hard time stopping now that she’d started. “He said anything that was on his mind, even when it shocked people. I’d never met anyone like that before. And at the end…when he knew what would happen to him if we killed Yevon…he didn’t tell me. So I wouldn’t hesitate.” Yuna gripped her hands together in her lap and tried to compose herself, but it was hard when she could still picture him teaching her how to whistle or talking about their future together in Zanarkand. They’d both known it would never happen, but it had still been nice to hear.
By comparison, Alex was a much safer topic, and Yuna nodded when Caius approved of her plan to take someone with her when she went to negotiate with the other guild leader. She wasn’t expecting him to call her family though, and that was enough to startle her out of her brooding about Tidus. “Caius…” She really was going to cry if they kept these kinds of topics up. Rubbing at one eye, she smiled up at him. “I feel the same way. I don’t have any siblings, but…I’d like to think an older brother would be something like you.”
Glancing down at her uneaten sandwich again, Yuna let out a small laugh. “We better eat before I cry all over this food.”

The Dragonblade
"Know that you have our aid if ever you need it" Caius promised her when she spoke of wanting to keep the clinic going for a while yet. And he meant that. He had stated as such -- this clinic was now a part of their mission. Maybe not the most financially healthy thing in the world, but neither Caius or Celes minded dropping their own funds in to help keep it running if need be. The investment had been well worth it, Yuna had proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Teedus -- that was his name. It was a funny name, but he wasn't going to say that to a grieving partner. Caius listened patiently as Yuna detailed who he was -- or, had been. One of her guardians, which he supposed made sense as she had been a person of importance in Spira. Like a King of Lucis and his Crownsguard. He didn't know what blitzball was though, and Caius blinked a few times as he tried to place where he might have heard the name of the sport or what it had to do with being underwater. But he didn't voice it, not right away anyway. He could ask more questions about Spira later, when it was right.
So Teedus had known something would happen to him when they killed Yevon, which if he recalled was the false god -- or something like that, which was somehow tied to the Sin it had been her job to kill. He'd need a refresher on the lore bits, but he got the gist. It sounded like a story out of those books he used to read, in terms of romance. A literal fairytale ending, but one of the sad ones. Teedus sounded heroic, in his own way. Sacrificing that bit of closure with Yuna in order to save their people. Ensuring she wouldn't hesitate...
It was clearly hitting her hard to talk about it, and Caius lowered his head slightly and closed his eyes in condolence. "Thank you for telling me" he spoke softly, wishing there was more he could do to ease her suffering. But as with his own family, her grief was one that would stay with her. All they could do was learn to live with that new normal. But it also reminded him of how important it was that he save Lumina. And if he couldn't, to get that closure the best he could. Before it was too late.
Yuna claimed that if she had an older brother, they would be something like him. "I doubt I'm that much older" Caius teased with a smile. Him being the older one felt weird, after he had been the middle child for all that time. Though the food was going to get cold -- and soggy, if they kept this up. He could agree with that.
"As we should," he agreed as he would take a bit of time to actually eat. They had been so engrossed in all this that he had forgotten he was hungry. Now that she had reminded him? Oh boy, did he feel it. After a minute or so though, he remembered something he had meant to mention.
"Right, I have a request" Caius brought up between swallows. "Within the next few days, a group of boys should arrive here, from the direction of Sonora. Could be three or four of them. One has dark hair, the other a blonde, hair looks a bit like a chocobo. It is possible some of them may be injured with the ordeal they've been through. I've instructed they bring the injured to the clinic if need be."
Perhaps it was sudden to pivot to business, but it had been one of the reasons he had come. "One of them, his name is Noctis. A... Younger incarnation, of the king I served. No matter what Noctis he may be, I owe him my life and more. I will compensate the clinic any fees, I just ask you take care of them and their retinue."
Caius chewed the inside of his cheek. He probably should be chewing food instead, though. "If I had it my way, I would have brought them with me. But it was not to be."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
[attr=class, bulk] Caius said that she could call on him and Celes if she ever needed anything involving the clinic, which made her smile at him over her lunch. “Thank you, Caius. You know the same always goes for you both too.” The two blonds usually had their hands full, so Yuna was happy to pay a visit down to Torensten whenever they needed her. Particularly now that she wasn’t the only thing keeping the clinic afloat. The place could definitely get by for a few days without her.
Her friend also thanked her for telling him about Tidus, which made Yuna dip her head slightly. “I should talk about him more. I want to keep his memory alive. It can just be hard. Particularly when no one on Zephon knows about him…” Everyone on Spira had known why they should honor Tidus. He was a guardian of renown who had helped bring about the eternal Calm. His legend would be passed down for centuries. Here, he had never existed. It was like he really had just been a dream, and that was hard to accept.
Caius also teased her that he wasn’t that much older than her, which made Yuna laugh. “Just a few years. But that does still make you the older brother, you know.” Back on Spira, Lulu and Wakka had always treated her like a little sister, but they were a bit too protective about it. They’d tried to stop her from becoming an apprentice summoner for a long time. She had a feeling Caius would have been more along the lines of Kimahri. Just quietly supportive of her goals, which she appreciated.
Yuna started to eat when Caius did, and she was also surprised by how hungry she turned out to be. Their conversation had gone to some places that were emotionally exhausting for both of them, so her food was half gone in just a few bites.
Caius also asked her for a favor, and Yuna nodded seriously when he said three or four injured men might be stopping by, one of which was a younger version of his king. That should have sounded strange to her, but she knew how Zephon could be with time and when it took people from. “Of course, I’ll look after them if they need it,” she reassured him. “I assume this has something to do with what you were getting up to in Sonora?” The description of one of the boys also caught her attention, though she hesitated before asking. “The blond one with the chocobo hair—do you mean Prompto? The boy from Eos that I sent to you?”
They had been paired together for a dating event once, and Yuna thought it had gone pretty well. She’d even given Prompto her address, but she’d never seen him again after she’d realized he was from the same world as Caius and had given him that lead. Maybe he’d been busy, or maybe he wasn’t interested anymore. She wasn’t offended since they’d only gone on one date, but it was bound to be just a touch awkward. Yuna would do her best to be a professional though.
"Thank you, Yuna. I'll remember that" Caius promised. He didn't know how often he would call on Yuna, especially when she had a clinic to run and people depending on her here. But she was still part of the Dragonblades at the end of the day, and she had reminded him of the resources he had. He'd have to put some serious thought on if there -was- anything Yuna could do about his current predicament. Her magic was incredibly unique, after all. He'd have to give it some further thought...
What about...?
Hmm, he'd have to ask about that when there was an opportunity. Caius smiled softly as Yuna admitted she should talk about this Teedus more. "I think talking about Teedus more would help you process, I agree" the mercenary agreed, seemingly oblivious to the idea that maybe, just maybe, talking about the people you lost might help you process losing them. You know, instead of repressing things. Still, he was grateful that Yuna had chosen to share that with him. While he liked to consider himself and Yuna close, there was still much about the summoner that he didn't know. He had been so busy lately, he realized, he really should take out more time to learn.
Yuna corrected that it still made him an older brother figure, even just a few years. "Hm, fair enough. Call it an impulse -- I've a few times been mistaken for being far older than I am. Not sure why" Caius admitted to that with a small laugh, scratching his beard in thought. Why -did- people always seem to think that? What about him made him seem older than he was? He didn't remember his exact age, sure, but 30? Come on, that's just insulting.
It was also insulting just how hungry he felt, and had been ignoring it. But there always seemed to be some matter of business or other to interrupt. Still, Caius at least tried to find a balance this time around. He ate while Yuna spoke, and smiled a bit as she agreed to take care of them. He wasn't surprised she agreed, but it was still nice of her. "Thank you. I'm... Concerned, about one in particular especially. I had met him in Eos, older than the one here," Caius expressed, lowering his voice a bit as he remembered they weren't that far from Sonora. "I found him here in Zephon some time ago, brought him to a clinic when he was injured, but he disappeared shortly after. His... Eyes, were damaged, unlike the man I met on Eos. It worries me greatly that he has been locked away for all this time since."
"Aye, that would be him. He found who he was looking for, then went looking for the other in Sonora" Caius answered her question casually as could be, as if he hadn't just said they would be bringing back a man who had been locked up. Yet worded in a way that an onlooker wouldn't suspect a thing. "Had to ensure they got out alive."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
[attr=class, bulk] Caius agreed that she should talk about Tidus more if it would help her process losing him, and Yuna nodded slowly, deciding that the same was probably true for a lot of people in her life. She was no stranger to loss, but then neither was Caius. “Thank you. And I’d listen too if you ever wanted to talk about anyone. I know we’ve both lost family members…” They weren’t here to talk about their parents, but that was something that would be good to unpack someday. Yuna had always held a complicated relationship with her father’s legacy, and Caius had talked before about losing people during the ten years of darkness.
He ended up agreeing that he would be the older brother in their relationship, though he complained about people always thinking he was older than he actually was. “You won’t like this, but I thought you were at least 27 the first time we met,” Yuna admitted with a laugh. “Honestly I think it’s your beard.” It was pretty impressive for someone his age. Yuna was fairly confident that Tidus hadn’t had any facial hair at all, considering the months that they’d spent on her pilgrimage. Maybe Caius would have had more of a baby face too if he kept his shaven.
Caius thanked her in advance for looking after the king and his retinue, and Yuna frowned slightly when he mentioned that one of the men had lost his eyesight. “I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll do what I can for him. At least any new injuries…” Caius also dropped some hints about what had been going on up in Sonora, which made her glance up at him over what remained of her sandwich. “I-...thought it might be something like that. You were keeping what you were up to vague, which never bodes well. You’re not hurt, are you?” She wouldn’t put it past him to keep any minor injuries to himself, but she also didn’t blame him for executing a prison break. Sonora’s government was well-known to be corrupt. Not to mention that Yuna herself had broken out of the Via Purifico in Bevelle after the Maesters had sentenced her and her guardians to death. Sometimes the law wasn’t just, and you had to do what you believed to be right.
