"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Caius pointed out that Yuffie should have asked about Cloud's location. Which maybe she should have, but she had just assumed that he'd tell her. Oh well, she guessed it didn't matter. They'd see Cloud soon. And she could tell him about how she was joining the Dragonblades to do good! That'd show him! She bet he'd think she'd go right off the rails and just steal and be a brat if he knew she was there. He'd be surprised to see her being a hero! Yeah, that'd wipe the smug look off his face!
The smug look she had just imagined all on her own.
"Yeah, I know. But the job will be easy! And once you've seen how much butt I kick in the field, you'll be begging me to join the Dragonblades!" she pointed out confidently. Of course, some of this was Yuffie's usual arrogance. But it wasn't untrue. Bandits and small things like that Yuffie really could handle. Her skills had grown immensely travelling with Cloud, and she felt confident that she could handle anything small time easily. After saving the world, bandits seemed like small fry.
He didn't seem to say anything about Tifa and Cloud. Maybe they had broken up? "Y'know, maybe Cloud isn't over Aerith after all. That was another girl back home, but she... uh, well, she died," Yuffie's expression changed for a moment, and for the briefest moment, she looked serious. She didn't like remembering Aerith. Well, no, that was a lie. She had loved Aerith. She had been one of the few people Yuffie hadn't teased. She hated remembering how she had died. "Tifa... I think Tifa has always loved Cloud. But Cloud... I dunno. If Aerith hadn't... I dunno who he would have chosen," she admitted.
"He's just lucky Aerith beat me to asking him on a date! Or was it Tifa? I dunno. Barret maybe? Someone did. But I was gonna, at the Gold Saucer, and I bet if I'd asked him, he'd NEVER have even thought of those two!" Yuffie added, grinning broadly.
Her grin faded a little when she noticed Caius's glare at her comparing him to Shinra people. "Oh, don't give me that look," she said dismissively. "I don't mean, like, people who WORK for Shinra. I mean, like, the people who lived in Shinra Cities. Y'know, back home, Shinra controlled most of the world. So like, y'know, Gaijin. Foreigners. Non-Wutaians. They were always trying to develop new technologies, and new ways of doing things. New robots, new mechs, new machines, new weapons. But in Wutai, we believed in honouring the old ways. Honouring our past. It's why we fight with weapons like my shuriken, and not their dumb guns," she explained.
"You like tinkling?" she asked, frowning a little. "Sounds gross. You should learn to play Fort Condor. THAT'S a fun way to kill time. I could teach you?" she suggested cheerfully, although she wasn't sure where she'd get a a Fort Condor game board from in Zephron. Maybe she could remember it well enough to teach him. Maybe change some of the more unfair rules, while she was at it...

The Dragonblades
“Never assume a job to be easy” Caius advised Yuffie calmly at her insistence that it would be a cakewalk. “Our work is not just about combat, either. It’s about awareness of your situation. When we find the bandits that were listed on the job posting, there is no guarantee that there won’t be bystanders. Or worse, hostages. As I have mentioned, our job is just as much about keeping people safe as it is ‘kicking butt’ as you say. An easy job can quickly turn difficult when other factors become involved. With the experiences you have relayed to me, however, I assume that prioritizing innocents will not be an issue.”
If Yuffie was every bit the world-saving do-gooder that she claimed to be, Caius would hope she would know to prioritize that. However, Cloud had not exactly given him much confidence about their group. And Vincent had failed to mention his involvement.
But then Yuffie began talking about Cloud and Tifa’s personal affairs, and while Caius had initially tuned this out as it wasn’t his business, the talk of another who had died piqued his interest. Right, she had spoken of how Sephiroth had killed their friend, Aerith. During Yuffie’s sudden blubbering fit earlier. It was clear that Aerith’s passing had impacted her deeply. Something Caius honored for a moment as he silently closed his eyes and lowered his head while she spoke of it.
Annnd then out of nowhere, just like that, Yuffie had to Yuffie.
“You… Huh?”
Wasn’t Yuffie a kid? The Cloud he had met was a grown man. And while Caius was not overtly familiar with romance, he was still pretty sure…
Maybe it was best he just nod his head and go along with it. So he did. These matters were too confusing for him right now.
Yuffie gave some context on Shinra, using their control of the cities to justify equating him to a Shinra person. He still wasn’t impressed, but he let it go.
“Tinkering. It’s a word for lightly working with machines” Caius corrected as calmly as he could. Astrals give him strength. Maybe school should be her priority. “I don’t know what Fort Condor is” Caius responded then when it was brought up. “I assume it is a game? I have not played anything of the kind since I was small.”
He remembered them, vaguely. Little screen tv games. Back when the world was much simpler.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie trailed along behind Caius, but rolled her eyes as he started to lecture her on how the job wouldn't be easy. While he was talking (and not looking), she just puppeted 'blah blah blah' with her hand while mouthing the words, before rolling her eyes and letting out a big sigh. "You don't have to lecture me, Caius," she told him with said dramatic sigh. "I've been doing this hero thing for a while. This ain't my first rodeo, y'know?" she explained. Before pausing. "Which is SUPER impressive since I still dunno what a rodeo is..." she added thoughtfully. She'd always meant to ask Cloud about that. He seemed like a rodeo kinda guy. A rodeo-er. Good at rodeoing. However that went.
"I'll totally help save the innocents! I've been fightin' for the innocents ever since I was like, eleven. I told ya, didn't I, all about Wutai? How it got unfairly taken over by the Shinra? And I totally kicked their butts and saved my nation!" she explained with some enthusiastic fist throwing once more. "Well, Cloud helped a little. And mostly Shinra just sort of self destructed through being TOO EVIL, but uh, I helped!" she added enthusiastically, running with a slight hop and a skip to catch up with Caius, leaning in front of him to peer up at him with her usual enthusiasm.
"Yes, me!" she remarked into his face, before she took a little jump to pose in front of him, striking a look, hands on her hips with them cocked to the side. "Don't think I haven't noticed you looking. I know I'm a total BABE," she explained cheerfully. "So of course Cloud woulda been into me! Just, missed my chance, that's all. Probably for the best. He's like, way too high maintenance for me," she said with a sniff, turning back around, and continuing on. Before tactfully slowly down because she still had no idea where to go so needed to follow Caius.
"Tinkering with machines? Yuck. I hate machines. The only good robot is a SMASHED robot," she said. Probably best not to mention to Caius what happened when her and Mikoto tried to build the Robocibo. She looked at him when he said he didn't know Fort Condor. Well, that wasn't a surprise. "Yeah, it's a game. You play it with this board and these pieces and... it's fun! I was super good at it!" she said cheerfully. He said he hadn't played games like that since he was small, and she peered over at him. "No games? Huh. That sounds boring. Well, what did ya do for fun growing up? Just tinkling on machines?" she grinned, making it clear that (for once) her mispronunciation was intentional.

The Dragonblades
"I'm not talking about just saving them. I mean keeping them safe when they end up in the crossfire" Caius corrected at that. "The Dragonblades have enemies. Cruel and vicious ones with no care for human life. They will put innocent people in harm's way. When they do, every spell cast, every shuriken, every movement requires discretion. Having people's lives in your hands is difficult, as you likely know already."
Caius didn't know how much Yuffie had to do so with her group. But he'd come to realize quickly that she wouldn't listen to basic advice. He had to frame it in a way that Yuffie would listen to.
"Of course, as a former freedom fighter and hero. You already know that" Caius added with a small grin. "I'm just reviewing, I'm sure you already know all of this. But every great hero knows that reviewing the necessities is super important, right? Can't forget them. I'm sure for a world saver like you, that should be no problem."
Appealing to Yuffie's ego that was ten sizes larger than herself. Caius couldn't believe he was doing this. But it was better than nothing. Kids were just strange.
Stranger yet when talking about dalliances with men far older than them while completely stopping their progress in order to do so. What in the world had Caius picked up here? And excuse me? She "saw him looking"?
"My apologies if I've given the impression. But I actually prefer partners of my own age."
The gentlest way to kill any sort of impression without affronting Yuffie's inflated ego. Not that it would stop her from thinking the same of Cloud, however. Poor sod. So he just let her go through the rest of her rant. And the robot rant. As he just kept walking. The only language conveyed was when he shot Vordun a look. Even the dragon seemed confused about how this tiny creature was still talking. Then Yuffie asked what he did for fun growing up.
"Nothing" he answered simply at that. "There wasn't time. Everything had to go towards surviving. There wasn't really any fun things left in my world while I was growing up. The Empire and the daemons made sure of that."
He supposed he couldn't entirely leave her hanging, though.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie turned to face Caius as he lectured her once more on why she had to be careful and had to save people, and not just be reckless. She sighed, walking backwards for a moment as she talked to him. "Okay, whoa, time out, Caius," she said, making a 'T' with her arms. She almost tripped, of course, walking backwards, so turned back around which kind of ruined the gesture. "Listen, I know I already told you about Wutai, but I dunno if you understand. Shinra, that's the bad guys, went to war with my home. 'cause they wanted to build a Mako Reactor. These big smelly things that make electricity for 'em. They had loads of 'em all over the world, and they were pretty dangerous too. Sometimes, they'd blow up and wipe out whole towns. But, they wanted more to provide more energy for the Shinra peeps. An' I guess they were running outta places to set 'em up or whatever, 'cause they decided the best place to build one was in Wutai. So, they went to war with us," she explained. "I grew up in that war. All the civilians in Wutai, never knowin' when Shinra and their giant robots would come rollin' in to try an' kill us all. An' why? 'cause they wanted to make a reactor. Wutai was our nation, our people, Shinra had no claim to it. We were separated by an ocean! But still they came. An' they killed so many of us," she continued.
"I'm the daughter of Godo. The ruler of Wutai. I'm Wutai's princess, basically, to put it in words you foreigners understand. And it was my destiny to be the greatest warrior in Wutai! When I was old enough, I was gonna save us all! I was gonna win the war! 'xcept, I didn't, 'cause, before I could grow up, the war ended. And we lost. My Dad, he surrendered, 'cause he didn't want to lose any more people. And I... kinda hated him for that," she went on. "But that's what I'm tryin' to say! I dedicated my life to savin' my home. To freein' it from Shinra and kicking their butts all the way back to scummy Midgar! But, I knew I had to be careful. 'cause, the thing is, I wasn't just Yuffie Kisaragi: super hot badass ninja. I was the 'princess of Wutai'," she made big air quotes as she said it. "An' if I got busted bustin' up Shinra troops or smooshing Shinra robots or anythin' like that, it could smash the peace we had. An' thousands more Wutaians would die," she explained.
"So, what I'm sayin' is I get it. I'm super badass and hot and SUPER HILARIOUS an' people think I don't care 'bout other people, but I do. I spent the last five years of my life fightin' a battle against a bad guy who can't ever know that's what I'm doin', 'cause if they do, everything I'm fightin' for could be lost. So what I'm sayin, Caius, is that I know. I know 'bout lookin' out for others. I'm not jus' a SUPER HOT pretty face, y'know? I got DEPTHS. You jus' don't know about 'em," she finished her little rant on her history, before waving a hand to indicate that she was ready to move on.
"Yep! That's right! I'm always reviewin' the basics. In fact, every time I go out to start a new adventure, y'know, a whole new place to explore or a new mission, we seem to stop an' SOMEONE explains how everything works again. It gets kinda annoyin' after a while," she grinned.
"Hey, well, that's good, 'cause, I don't date super old fogeys anyway," Yuffie replied when he told her that he was more interested in someone his own age. He obviously knew he had no chance with her anyway. That was the whole point. Although he apologised for giving her the wrong impression. She just grinned at that. "Not your fault. Nobody can blame you for lookin' at my smokin' hot bod!" she beamed, striking another pose.
"So, you never got to be a kid?" she asked after a moment, taking in what he had said. Yuffie had grown up in a war, but had always found time to play. Sometimes with the other side! She still remembered the funny Shinra SOLDIER she used to mess with all the time. "Wow. That sucks," she said after a moment. She paused to consider for a moment, and then she jumped up on a nearby rock, pointing to the sky. "Well, there's nothin' else for it! Caius WhateverYourLastNameIs, I, Yuffie Kisaragi, hereby do swear to teach you how to be a kid and have fun!" she declared into the air. "You gotta learn all the stuff you were missin' out on!" she told him, hopping down from the rock.
"An' that can start out...." In the distance, she could see the town. She grinned. "...with a race! Race ya into town!"

The Dragonblades
Yuffie didn't take the bait, it seemed. And instead went on a long rant that actually turned into a fairly in-depth story about her people and the lengths that Shinra had gone to just to put in a power plant for themselves. Caius had heard stories of Shinra, and how shady they were. But this was the cruelest one yet. With each victim of Shinra, Caius learned a little bit more about this organization. And he didn't like a single bit of it. By the end of it though, Caius at least understood a little more about Yuffie's struggles and what she had seen and done.
"I see" he spoke softly. "I apologize for assuming you to be reckless. I know I sound like a broken record, but it's my job to ensure it's understood. I've seen mercenaries come and go that think their glory and looking all heroic is the only thing that's important. That so long as the job is done and they look good, it's fine. But that's not what we're about. The lives of civilians are important, otherwise our whole existence would mean nothing. No innocent life is expendable. If you understand that, than you should be fine."
A long sigh ensued after that. "To be frank. We've made quite the enemy the last few years. A criminal syndicate -- err, big bad bandit group basically -- called the Original Sin has openly declared war on us. They have incredible resources, perhaps more than our own. And I have seen them do horrible, terrible things for the sake of their business. The last time my co-leader and I came into contact with them, they had slaughtered an entire village and used magic to make it look as if nothing had happened. All while impersonating the inhabitants and using it to lure people in, kill and rob them. Collateral damage, innocent lives, it's nothing to them. That's why I had to make sure."
But soon after Caius had gotten the solemn tale out of the way and gained a bit more respect for Yuffie in the process, did she return to her... Yuffie-isms. Another sigh, this time more exasperated than anything. "I'm not--Sheesh. How do I put this..." he mused aloud, following his first attempt to explain things being caught on his tongue with an annoyed grunt. "I don't... Feel physical attraction to one's appearance the way others do. There was a long period where I was barely around people. Only in passing, never intimately. There was a great deal that I was never able to experience."
That was the first time he'd admitted that, and he didn't know where it came from. People never really talked to him about physical attraction, though, so he supposed it just never came up. On that topic though, Yuffie asked if he had essentially never had a chance to be a kid. "Basically, yes" he answered in the affirmative. Never got to be a kid. Caius hadn't thought of it like that. He tried not to think too much about what he had missed out on. It just made the day harder. But he couldn't deny who he was, and what had shaped him.
Then came the oath. That wasn't good. This was going to be a disaster and even Caius knew this. And then she was off, challenging him to a race.
"Good grief..."
Well, there was nothing for it. But Caius wasn't entirely virtuous and against cheating. So he hoped on Vordun and motioned for the dragon to hoof it. Eager to get moving, Vordun took off at a sprint and was very quickly past Yuffie. Caius shot Yuffie a grin clearly filled with mischief as they passed.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie didn't know why Caius's records were broken or how a record made a noise, but apparently he sounded like one. She wasn't sure what kind of noise a broken record would make. A record was just like, boring paperwork about stuff, right? So she guessed it made a sort of ripping noise. Which she wasn't sure Caius was making. Unless maybe when he farted, and she didn't want to think about that. She wrinkled her nose at the thought. Who knew Caius was so gross? "Yep, well, that's me! I get the job done, look good, AND think about the little guy!" she said, striking a pose in reflection to what he said. Hopefully that would be the end of the Caius lectures, because she was SOOOOO bored of them. The guy seemed to forget that she was a genuine world-saver. She had been through all of this!
"Sounds pretty Shinra-y," Yuffie agreed when he told her about their enemies. Original Sin huh? What kinda dumb name was that? Might as well call yourself Team Evil. Still, wiping out villages and then pretending that they weren't wiped out, that was- well, actually, that was EXACTLY what Shinra did. Like, EXACTLY. "Seriously, we should compare notes, 'cause, Shinra did that once too," she pointed out. "I mean, they didn't use magic. They just, like, used actors or whatever, but, Sephiroth burned down a town and murdered everybody in it, then Shinra rebuilt it and put actors there to pretend it never happened. SUPER confusing," she went on. Luckily Cloud and Tifa had explained it to her. Several times. Because it took a while to sink in. "But don't worry! 'cause I can totally kick their butts!" she decided. After all, they couldn't be worse than Shinra, right? "They've never messed with you now you have Yuffie on the team!"
He went on to explain how he wasn't attracted to people physically, which Yuffie thought was a bit odd, but, oh well. "Huh, that explains why you're not droolin' over me then. Got it," she nodded. Simple explanation. It made sense.
And then the race was on! Of course, Yuffie hadn't expected Caius to immediately use Vordun, but it WAS kinda cheating while bending the rules to be in his favour.
Which was childish as hell.
"YEAH! Go for it Caius! That's the kinda childishness I'm talkin' 'bout!" Yuffie cried, punching a fist in the air. She ran for a moment, but there was no way to keep up with a dragon.
OR WAS THERE!?
She held up her wrist, red summon materia glowing. "Chocomog, I choose you!" she yelled, as the rampaging chocobo, moogle on it's back, appeared. Yuffie flung herself up onto its back also, hunched behind the moogle. "Okay, Chocomog! PUNCH IT! Let's catch that dragon!" she grinned as the chocobo took off, racing down the path behind Vordun. Moving surprisingly fast, of course, but it was a summon that attacked by running DIRECTLY at stuff....

The Dragonblades
So Shinra had distinct similarities to the Original Sin, even down to placing actors in place of people that one of their own had killed. Of course, in Caius' case the "actors" were in fact the bandits themselves, trying to kill and rob travelers. Yuffie insisted that the Original Sin wouldn't bother them with her on the job, though while he smirked at that, he doubted it. "One of them conjured a giant dragon when the jig was up. Only way to put a stop to the whole thing was for Celes to put an end to their ringleader."
Caius didn't know if Celes and Yuffie would get along. It seemed like their personalities might clash... But that was a topic for another time.
This was not in fact the only reason why Caius wasn't "drooling" over Yuffie, but he had the distinct impression that if he tried to explain it, it would be lost on her. At least it didn't take much for Yuffie to accept the explanation as it was and move forwards. Caius didn't want to dwell too much on those sorts of issues.
Surprisingly, Yuffie actually encouraged Caius' decision to utilize Vordun. "You never said the race had to be on foot" Caius commented with a small laugh, a laugh that only grew when he saw Yuffie beginning to gain on him with a chocobo. Where she had gotten the chocobo, he didn't know. Or the moogle, for that matter. Could he find a way to summon Vordun like that? Probably not, but it might be worth a look later.
Caius tapped Vordun's back twice then, and the dragon would take to the air in order to gain speed. It wouldn't be long before they reached Provo at this rate, and then came the sight of spiky blonde hair...
