"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
He was already whining she'd attacked too soon! No doubt preparing his excuses for when he lost. That was fine, Yuffie would let him make all the excuses he wanted, it wouldn't change anything! He'd have still lost! "A TRUE warrior is ALWAYS ready!" she retorted energetically, although it seemed her response came back to bite her, because he WAS ready, even if he was pretending not to be. Two weapons sprang out of nowhere to block her shuriken, which surprised her, and she hadn't been ready for. How had he done that!? Some kind of magical weapons? That was super cool! After she kicked his butt, she'd need to get him to show her how he did that. Then maybe she could do the same for her shuriken!
He threw it back to her, unaware of how dangerous she could be with it, CLEARLY. She grabbed the shuriken out of the air in a pinwheel, moving to throw it back again. As she released it, however, something happened that she didn't expect. He... disappeared!? What?
Still pivoting through the air as she released her shuriken, she was off balance when the flat of the dagger blades hit her in the back. It slapped her across the back with an audible metal slap, causing her to stumble forwards, her arms flying in a pinwheel as she fell. "WhoawhoawhoaHEY!" she protested, stumbling away but managed to turn around just in time and do a backflip onto her feet, where she held out her hand as her shuriken (now flying at nothing) came back to her hand. "Teleportin's a dirty trick!" she remarked. She had no idea how he'd done that either, but it was obvious that this wasn't going to be a standard fight. "Fine. Fightin' dirty's just how I like it," she grinned, slamming her fists together, and hurling the shuriken again.
This time, it seemed to take on a mind of its own, as if Yuffie was controlling it from a distance, acting like a saw blade cutting through the air as she directed it, pushing against Caius and his own blades. At the same time, she moved her arms, fire forming around her as she chanelled her elemental ninjitsu techniques for a long range attack. She slammed her foot on the ground, sending a stream of fire towards Caius, right where he was, as her spinning shuriken kept the pressure on him.

The Dragonblades
First hit. Caius had decided to use the flats of his blades instead in order to keep from doing any real harm to Yuffie, but he wasn't making it too easy either. He took a deep breath, keeping his body and mind calm and still as could be while he watched her movements. She claimed he fought dirty, but all he did was use what he had the way it was supposed to be use. As had she, even if she had attacked when the opponent had no visible weapon in their hands at the time. He hadn't even attacked her unarmed either. So he ignored that.
She hurled the shuriken together, this time after slamming her fists together. The motion indicated he should be ready for magic of some kind. And that was when he noticed that the shuriken wasn't flying in the same straight line it had been before. Instead, she appeared to be controlling it. He propped his blades into a cross to block it, waiting for the chance to parry it back. But that was when he heard the sound of the ground coming up. So she was doubling up on magic? It seemed she had some strong reserves of magic, and some resourceful cunning. He would give them that. Most would be hard pressed in a situation like this, she had effectively pincered him. But Caius wasn't most.
He would blip from sight for just a moment, the tiniest warp that made it look as though he had just phased through the buzzsaw shuriken and the flames. He didn't hesitate to take the offensive, running forwards and pointing his blades at Yuffie. Clicking the triggers, he would launch rapidfire energy bullets from both gunblades at Yuffie. These were laced with Thunder, and while they wouldn't wound her, she would get a nasty shock if she was hit.
But what if I told you they were just a distraction?
While she dealt with those, Caius' daggers would disappear and be replaced with his proper gunblade. The moment he reached her, he would go for a flurry of blows head on. They had seen her offensive capabilities, but could she handle well under pressure?

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie watched as he disappeared, her shuriken passing through him as he appeared in front of it, harmlessly dodging both her elemental ninjitsu and the shuriken itself. And then he pressed his attack, approaching her and...
...firing... bullets... out of his... daggers?
Yuffie flipped to the side, in a handless cartwheel, as they shot past her. Yes, she could be clumsy, but in a fight, she could be agile too, although she still felt her hairs stand on end from the proximity to the electrical blasts. "You have blades that fire bullets too? That is... the dumbest... extraiest... thing I've ever seen!" she called back, as his daggers seemed to disappear and turn into a single blade. He was coming at her directly now, his blade swinging in several quick blows. Yuffie was still unarmed, but that was fine. She could deal with this.
She dodged and ducked as the blade came in, catching it at one moment with her padded arm, using it to deflect a blow. She had to go on the defensive, unarmed against a blade was tough, even for a ninja. But she had her martial arts on her side, and she could dodge and redirect the blade as it whirled towards her, keeping out of reach. She backflipped, kicking upwards, aiming to push the blade out of the way with her foot, and regardless, putting plenty of distance between her and her opponent. Yuffie always fought better from long range. "Hey, Blondie, little protip for ya. Never turn your back on a ninja's weapon," she grinned, as she held out her hand, and her shuriken (which he had phased through) made its return to Yuffie, cutting through the air and directly at Caius's back.

The Dragonblades
She had speed as well. She accommodated for a small and likely frail frame with agility. Reflexes were sound too. She clearly had battling experience, far more than someone her age should. Something that Caius could identify with himself. It seemed that this was his way of learning more about this potential recruit. Not through her words, but through the way she fought. Though her words fell on deaf ears as his heart was completely into the fight itself. His expression had become purely stoic, no longer making jokes or even answering her taunts. She was quick on her feet and in her reflexes, and had good control over her weapon using some sort of magic. She also appeared to be able to utilize magic in the traditional fashion as well. Good on all accounts so far, but he hadn't finished testing as to whether she could do well when the pressure was on.
Despite her being unarmed, she was able to redirect his blows. He kept striking back in rapid succession though, no matter how many times she deflected. But the pivotal moment came when Yuffie created some distance and held out a hand. The whistle in the air likely meant she was still controlling her shuriken despite having to defend. He had thought perhaps if she was forced on the defensive she would lose control over it. It appeared to have to some extent, but it seemed she didn't need much opening to call it back. Very interesting.
Unfortunately, she had telegraphed the attack. Giving a very obvious hint in the name of trash talk. It was there that his ears picked up how close the whistling was getting, and while he was tempted to say "I didn't", he knew it would be better for her to find out on her own.
Seeming to be ignoring her, he would press his attack. Going for another swing as if trying to cut her off before she could do anything, he would phase through her at the last moment, before promptly shoving her from behind towards her own shuriken.
Thus came the test. He wanted to see how much control she had over the weapon or if she had the reflexes to block it with hardly a second left to do so. Of course, he had no intentions of causing her any real harm. If Yuffie proved unable to defend herself, the weapon would disappear when it was inches from her face. But only if necessary.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
The shuriken whistled towards Caius's back, but it seemed that the long haired Dragonblade had another trick up his sleeve. Or, as Yuffie thought of it, the same old trick, as he disappeared once again, this time giving her a blow from behind.
"You gotta change the record, blondie," she managed to say, before the hit struck her.
Yuffie stumbled forward towards the shuriken, losing her balance for a moment, but she was one with her weapon, and it'd take more than that to trick her. Taking her momentum and turning what was a trip into an over the head flip, she leapt into the air, grabbing the shuriken as it whistled behind her. She landed on one foot and threw it again in a spin, picking up the momentum to send it whistling directly towards Caius, tearing through the air like a buzz saw.
This time, however, Yuffie had learned. Whenever her blade pressed its attack, rather than endure, he teleported out of the way. Usually to press an attack directly at her. Which was really annoying, but also getting to be predictable, so as her blade pushed on him, her hands came together and her hands crackled with energy.
She unleashed Bolt III directly along the path of her shuriken, timing it as the blade hit Caius's. If he teleported towards her to press the attack, he'd be teleporting directly into her electrical attack and be blasted. And if he held his ground, well, it'd be a bit slower, but the blast would still reach him, and hit him at the same time as he defended against her blade.

The Dragonblades
"And you need to stop telegraphing your attacks."
Caius hadn't really spoken during this, but he had decided to give Yuffie at least a little bit of advice in this instance. Sometimes it was better to remain silent and focus on the battle at hand. One thing she had learned though, was his attack patterns. Good, she had a good memory. A good memory was an asset in battle, but if one relied on it too much, then one could be easily taken by surprise if one got too confident when utilizing it.
Luckily for Caius, one thing that he had in spades was versatility.
Yuffie brought out more magic the moment that he moved to block the shuriken that was coming back at him. This time he wasn't as surprised to see her using it, but it still posed a problem. She was directly blocking his path with it, and it would likely get him even if he teleported past it. The only way out was to get out of dodge completely. But he needed to find a way to turn this to his favor.
That was when he remembered one weapon he hadn't shown off just yet.
"Thundara."
The mercenary launched a bit of magic of his own, combating her Bolt. The two attacks would intersect, causing a small explosion. Bracing himself, the explosion would blow away the shuriken and Caius would immediately use a Point Warp, disappearing before the smoke cleared.
Caius would soon re-appear on the roof of the Wyvern's Rest, in Yuffie's blind spot. She had talked about being a great ninja, surely she could appreciate the tactic. Hopping down back into the courtyard, he would point his gunblade towards Yuffie.
"Bang" came a deadpan tone, though he didn't pull the trigger. There was no point, he decided to leave it up to her to consider whether he could have actually hit her from there. Something to think about might teach her some humility. "I think you've adequately showcased your abilities."
"I'm not telegraphing. I'm making 'em look AWESOME," Yuffie replied with her usual cheer, even as the two bolt attacks slammed into each other in a huge electrical explosion. She wasn't quite sure how he'd cast so quickly with his weapon still in hand, but it didn't matter. In the flash, she could see that he had teleported once more. But right about now, she was getting used to that.
She leapt into the air in a butterfly flip, spinning around. It looked, for all everybody knew of Yuffie, like a pointless, flashy, showy move she did just to show off. And, well, yeah, okay, she had learned to do it because it looked SUPER cool, but it DID also serve a purpose. In one quick movement, she flipped around so that she could survey the entire battlefield, and spot where an opponent may have moved to. Yes, okay, she could achieve the same effect by using the other, well, known, combat technique of 'turning your head a bit', but it was nowhere near as COOL, and this was faster!
As he hopped down, blade ready, she span to face him, a fireball lighting up in her hand. She stood frozen, pointing it at him, as he pointed his gun at her. 'Bang' he said. "Fwoosh," she replied, her hand glowing with the fiery ball.
"Darned straight! I kicked butt!" she replied when he commented she had showcased her abilities, the fireball disappearing as she let her materia deactivate without casting. "So, when'd I start?" she asked with a grin. "Do I get one of those cool dragon logos to go on my outfit? They're super awesome!" she added brightly. @caius

The Dragonblades
Her scouting capabilities were good, albeit overly flashy and wasting movement. She had a good foundation, but needed improvement. Caius slowly nodded his head as he lowered his gunblade. Yuffie of course, assumed right away that she had passed and was welcome. She had a severe case of overconfidence that might need some work too.
"You fought well. You can clearly handle yourself despite your age" Caius admitted in what was probably going to go to Yuffie's head quickly. "But some minor criticism, in hopes it will aid the progress of your fighting skills. You telegraph your attacks -- as in you are verbally giving away when you're attacking. To use our battle as an example, aside from casting, I did not speak before an attack. Keeping your opponent guessing is a vital aspect to battle. If they don't see you coming, you have the advantage."
She was likely taught that in ninja school, if she was actually a ninja. But he decided not to mention that part. Thinking about it for a moment, Caius also wanted to address the battle's end. But how to do so in a way that Yuffie wouldn't just tune out?
"Your instincts and senses are good. And you're quick on your feet. But you could be even faster. The issue is you waste movement. I can understand a desire to show off, it's fun. But it slows you down and wastes your energy. Showing off can be a good thing if a mission involves performance using your abilities. But in a real, life or death battle, your movements should be as quick and precise as possible in order to ensure you have the advantage over your opponent at all times."
Hopefully that would get through. But somehow he doubted it.
"The best battle is one that ends quickly and with as little damage as possible on your person. Just in case you need to fight again on short notice. Many monsters fight in packs, so conserve your energy and take as little damage as possible by cutting down your movements."
Now with that out of the way, they could talk business.
"Next, you'll be going on a job with one of our leaders to ascertain your field performance" Caius would reveal when Yuffie asked when she started. "Which as Celes is on vacation, would be me. It's one thing to know how to fight well. It's another to know how to handle field work while keeping innocent people safe and handling yourself with honor and representing the Dragonblades well. In Torensten, a warrior's honorable reputation is everything, especially if you're a guild that can't help people if they don't trust us. Meaning you need to conduct yourself on the field in a way that contributes to that. Or to put it simply, if our reputation improves and people know we're reliable, the whole guild benefits, including you. If you do something that hurts it, then it hurts all of us. Again, including you."
Caius shrugged in turn. "Though really, we just take the safety of innocent people seriously. We want to help people. That means we gotta do it right."

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
"Whatcha mean, 'despite my age'!?" Yuffie fumed at what he said, hands on her hips as she gave him a full blown pout. "I'm nearly eighteen!" she remarked, and then she paused. "Well, I'm nearly seventeen, which is the same as nearly being eighteen! You grown ups are all the same! Always thinking us kids can't handle ourselves, but we totally can! I kicked your butt! And I helped save the world! Trust me, I got PLENTY of experience," she ranted.
And then she paused, and listened to his feedback. She nodded a few times. "Uh huh, uh huh. Well, I got some feedback for you too. 'cause, you realise, I'm the Champion of the Pagoda right? Wutai's Greatest Warrior? Don't think jus' 'cause I'm young I don't know what I'm doing. I'm a ninja expert. And you, buster, rely WAY too much on your tricks. I mean, that teleportin'? Flashy to start with, but once your opponent starts to predict it, you're gonna find that they can get the drop on you before you do. An' that stupid gun blade thing of yours? That's the dumbest idea for a weapon I've ever seen, and I know a robot cat who fights with a megaphone! I mean, a sword is for bashing, and a gun has all delicate innard-y bits. So all you end up with is a weaker sword, 'cause it's all hollow, AND a gun that's gonna break and jam all the time 'cause you're bashing it. STOO-PID," she replied, before folding her arms and looking smug because she felt she had given him enough feedback as he'd given her.
"Hey, I know how to show off, but we weren't fightin' for real. Flashy moves are great, they intimidate people, and they look AWESOME, but when things get super tough, it ALSO means people aren't ready fer you to get real. Plus, they keep people focused on what you look like, instead of what you're doing. Distraction and misdirection are the way of the ninja," she winked.
"Really? Did you not listen to the whole 'saved the world' thing? And united my people to fight back against Shinra! Kinda. Point is, I've done TONS of adventuring, all over my world. I even went on an airship, and lemme tell you, that was NOT fun, 'cause I hate airships," she explained. "But fine! C'mon! I've been dying for an adventure! Let's get out there and I'll show you how much people really love me!" @caius

The Dragonblades
Caius would soon find himself pinching the bridge of his nose in exasperation as Yuffie would predictably take his words offensive. “You’re mistaking it for an insult. I was also skilled “for my age” when I was your age. But circumstances dictated that be necessary. Those are not ordinary circumstances for children, and most are not supposed to be able to fight as you do” he pointed out, subtly sharing a touch of his own history in the process. “It is a compliment, in a way. There is no reason that someone your age should have the experiences that you do. But for your circumstances, you have done well for yourself.”
Though he would actually start to smirk when Yuffie would begin to outline her own criticisms. Deciding to humor it for the time being, he would listen, even as she bragged about things that he had no idea what it was she spoke of. And with no idea if she was being truthful or not. He relied too much on his teleporting, did he? He had aligned his fighting style to scout Yuffie, to pressure her and force her into scenarios that would show him what she was made of. But perhaps he could ensure he conserved his magic more and found more ways to fight without it, just to be safe. The gunblade meanwhile, was another matter. She wasn't telling him anything he didn't already know. It had taken plenty of trial and error, a lot of jammed barrels, and some "borrowing" materials from Niflheim's forces, to get his weapons the way he wanted them.
"I appreciate your feedback, Yuffie" he responded calmly with a polite bow. "I will take your words into consideration."
Which he had a feeling would infuriate her even more, but maybe she needed an example of how to properly conduct that sort of thing. Though she would talk more about saving the world from there when Caius would detail the next assignment, and Caius couldn't help a long sigh.
"Right, about that. Your "world-saving" friend with the spiky hair leveled a civilian area in Provo because he saw Sephiroth walking around and socializing with a buddy" Caius brought up, remembering he had promised Yuffie information after the first test was completed. "So forgive me if 'I saved my world from Sephiroth' isn't exactly a comfort to me when it comes to keeping people safe. I need to see it for myself."
Though her bit about hating airships was notable. "I suppose that means we're not flying" he remarked as he started heading back inside. "I'll have some chocobos rented. Though we still need to stop to pick up my partner even if we're not flying. It's always good to have insurance."
Caius would head to the reception counter. Tomoe had to avert her eyes a bit to try not to laugh at the fact that Caius looked far younger without the beard.
"Miss Tomoe, do you have any jobs that would work for testing? Preferably in the Provo area, we might as well check to see if Spiky's still kicking while we're there."
