[attr="class","crashBody"] There was the sensual smoothness of jazz that filled the air, as if the aged victrola radio, in its rounded darkwood, gave an electric exhale of puffed sax. Cissnei sat behind her large desk, her back to it as she swirled a cup of aged honey bourbon in thought. Her eyes lingered on the view of Sonora before her. She was cold, steely, and washed out with snow. Though, beneath her appearance, Sonora pushed on like a woman determined to not be run down with the rough ways of the world. She did what she must to survive. The yellow artificial lights that lit streets and windows showed her continued signs of struggle. [break][break] She wondered if this is how Shinra presidents felt when they looked down from their office. [break][break] Unfortunately, Sonora paled in comparison to the magically radiant Midgar. She felt the pangs of homesickness. [break][break] The ice melted and clinked in the glass. She took a generous sip. [break][break] It had taken a good bit of blackmailing to get the mafia to agree to leave. It was interesting what a few photos could do when threatening to show them to the Sonoran law enforcement. The owner of the condominium complex was more than happy to get rid of the gang plaguing him and ruining his business. In the meantime, Cissnei would keep the place safe for him in exchange for a reasonable rent. She would be called to help him resolve disputes in the building. [break][break] She leaned back in her leather seat. Ochre eyes flashed to the heated fireplace. [break][break] All that was left was to finish decorating, get out more business cards, and set up the phone line. Hopefully then the Angel Eyes Detective Agency will be back on its feet. She would show Sonora that nothing keeps her down and her feet would hit the ground running once more.
The meeting with Hojo had gone by smoothly, at least Tseng thought so. Others that only knew of the man wouldn't think such a thing was possible, but that wasn't his problem. The two men knew each other well enough to not be on each others bad side, thus Tseng had nothing to worry about. At least, not for the time being. He had bid his farewell that day and set off on his journey once more. He needed to establish himself in this new world. Meet people to gain connections, find some people to work beside, and find a place to do all of this in.
One business would catch his attention. Well, not the business itself, bu twho he heard was running it. It had taken some to confirm his theory, and now it was time to confront a person he never though he'd see again. So Cissnei had her own detective agency now? It wasn't a shock to Tseng, he knew she could do anything she set her mind to. Detective work was a lot like the work they did as Turks, only less violent really. He acquired an address and made his way to Sonora.
It had taken him some time, but Tseng had finally "gotten the feel" for this new world. So, the trip to Sonora did not take him very long, already being nearby had helped some as well. He didn't really have a place to call home just yet, but he had some acquaintences that he could stay with during his travels. He didn't want to settle in anywhere until he knew where the best spot would be.
Looking at the business card in his hand, he double checked the address before heading in and making his way to the office space it said she was in. The door was part way open, so he pushed it the rest of the way and stepped inside to lean against the wall with his arms crossed. The back of her chair was facing him, but he could still see the red of her hair and the glass in her hand. She must of been looking out the window, and he did as well. She was correct, it wasn't Midgar. "I didn't realize how much I would miss how bright Midgar was until I was no longer able to see it." He commented, a small smile on his face as he was sure she was not going to be expecting him to be there.
[attr="class","crashBody"] Cissnei sat there looking out the window, taking another sip of her bourbon. Then, there it was. His voice is like dark silk piercing the music of the room. She wasn’t surprised that she hadn’t heard him come in. That was a typical attribute of the Turks, wasn’t it? Her lips parted into a knowing smile, her lashes lowered slightly. It was good to hear him. It had been too long. “You will find Sonora a pale comparison to Midgar. But she has her perks, if you know where to look.” She let her eyes unfocused enough to see the blurry reflection of him in the window instead of the outside world. [break][break]
She stood up from her chair and turned to him. She placed a hand along the back of the leather chair as she studied him for a moment. She half didn’t believe he was really there. It seemed like Turks came and went like apparitions in Headstone forest. “What took you so long to find me?” Her tone was half irritated, half joking. She crossed to the other side of the desk, where a small whiskey cart stood waiting. She set her glass down on a coaster, before gesturing toward the glasses. “Shall I pour one for old times?” She asked softly. [break][break] He still wore his suit. She could not remember a time when he never wore this outfit. He was always ready to work and took his job seriously. Cissnei respected him and his orders. She only betrayed that once and she learned to regret it to this day. Her ochre eyes met his dark ones. A soft twinkle was in them. “You know, if you don’t dress more warmly here, you’ll catch a cold.” Wearing a suit in Costa del Sol or the mild temperatures of Midgar and Junon were one thing. Here in Sonora, where it always seemed to obdurately snow, you could lose a toe or a finger if improperly dressed. “There is a relentless chilly bite that Midgar never had.”
Tseng wasn't surprised that Cissnei didn't turn around right away, but her voice brought a small smile to his face. It was relaxing to hear something familiar in this new world, the voice belonging to a fellow Turk was just the icing on the cake. "I'm afraid I haven't been here long enough to notice." It didn't help that the time he had spent here, he had spent it gathering information on people and places. He was trying to gather connections to use in the future when he needed them, nothing more than that.
Watching as she stood up, he gave her a friendly smile. Her looks were the same, minus the clothes she wore. Tseng had always thought she was a beautiful woman, but thought nothing more of the matter. He gave a small shrug at her question as he crossed his arms, the small smile still on his face. "I only arrived a few months ago. I've spent that time learning what I can." He had also taken up some odd jobs here and there, to keep his finances in order and to make sure he was still good at what he did.
Uncrossing his arms, he entered the room, giving her a nod. "It'd be a shame not to." It had been some time since the two of them had shared a drink together, or since he had a drink at all. Between what had happened to First Class Fair and the Sector Seven plate, the air at Shinra had changed. To be quite honest, it was rather pleasant to not be there anymore. Not that his loyalty had been to the company much at that point anyways.
At her comment on his attire, he couldn't help but chuckle. "So I've noticed. Got quite the chill during my travels." Tseng knew he didn't have to wear a suit anymore, he just hadn't been able to bring himself to change quite yet. "I will admit, I'm not sure what else I would be comfortable in." He wore pajama pants and a suit. That had been it for as long as he could remember. Oh, and sweat pants and a tshirt when he worked out. "Perhaps you would like to accompany me sometime to find a new wardrobe." A second opinion would be useful, and the eye of a woman as well.
[attr="class","crashBody"] “Is that so? A busy man, as ever.” She smiled thoughtfully. “Perhaps, you can relay anything you might have discovered. I’ve been preoccupied with other business to be scouting the area.” It was true. Between dealing with ex-Turks and SOLDIERs, she had little time to rebuild her business. Even less free time to gather intel. [break][break] When he said he caught quite the chill, Cissnei’s mother hen came out. “Then let’s get some bourbon in you and put you by the fire.” She was already pouring them both a glass - his first, her second. She walked up to him to hand him the offering. Then gestured for him to take his seat in one of the armchairs by the fire. [break][break] “Perhaps, I will accompany you later. The snow is deep tonight.” The idea of going out in the cold right now was bothersome to her. “Instead, let’s talk business.” He knew his situation on Zephon, but she needed to update him on some of her intel. She crossed the room to take her seat in the opposite arm chair. The fireplace left a cozy warmth in the room. [break][break] “I’ve got an informant in the Sonoran police here. I met him at a masquerade. Faces aren’t known, but we exchanged numbers to burn phones. Sometimes he has work for me.” She stated in a low voice and looked up at Tseng. [break][break] “I know all the First Class SOLDIERs are here on Zephon.” She said then let that silence sink in. “I’ve met three of them with the mention of Genesis’s whereabouts. I’ve sent Sephiroth and Angeal on each other’s paths...in hopes Angeal can keep that group reeled in.” She lowered her eyes. [break][break] After their date night, Angeal was swayed to her side, at least partially so. She at least earned Sephiroth’s tolerance of her, even if he could not hold a conversation to save his life.
"It would seem so." To be honest, Tseng couldn't remember a time where he wasn't doing something. As Turks, they were always sent out for one thing or another. He didn't mind it though, he wasn't one to be idle for too long. A small smirk creeped up on his face. "It seems as though we haven't lost our touch. We still managed to get different factors of information to exchange." That's how they worked though, like different parts of a machine. Everyone had to do their part and keep moving or they would all fall apart.
Cissnei motioned for him to sit as she handed him his drink. Giving a nod, he followed to where she had said for him to sit and sat down, taking a sip as he did so. It was refreshing, especially with the chill that was outside. He looked over at her as she took a seat opposite him, ready to discuss information. He was proud of his Turks, they did their job very well. Now it seemed like Cissnei was taking off on her own, ready to do her own thing. He wasn't her boss anymore, and it was refreshing to see her flourish.
She stated she might accompany him home later, and he raised an eyebrow. "I look forward to it." If she knew of any sights for him to see nearby, it would be a good chance to take in some scenery. That, and there was a part of him that didn't want to be away from her. He decided it was because she was a familiar face and left it at that. Moving on talk business, he was glad to be talking about something that came normally to himself.
As she spoke, Tseng took another drink. He was warming up now, and was quite glad by that. He wasn't a big fan of the cold, but could deal with it if he needed to. "Excellent." The next thing she said surprised him. He thought maybe a few SOLDIERs would be here, but all of the First Class SOLDIERs? Well, this was about to get interesting. "Yes, Angeal was always the level headed one, so it's best he gets them all together before they cause any more problems. How is Fair doing?" The last thing he remember about Fair was that they were unable to get to him first, and it still weighed on him from time to time.
[attr="class","infoNotes"]She's a bit moody on this cold day.
[attr="class","crashLyrics"]A Cold Day in Hell
[attr="class","crashBody"] Cissnei gave a smug smile and a small little shoulder shrug. Her hair fell over her shoulder as she sat in the arm chair comfortably. “Old habits die hard.” She said with a knowing look in her eyes. “The need for intelligence grew even more as people began getting pulled into Zephon. It’s only natural to obtain it and gain an advantage with it.” It kept business booming as people wanted to find those they cared for. Information truly sold and Cissnei needed money to stay off the street. It was only natural for her to do so. [break][break]
“Fair is...alive.” She said carefully looking at the fire as it glowed. It's pretty amber was eye-catching compared to all the white and grey outside. “Opposite of what we thought he was doing. But I think he will do well on Zephon.” There was a fondness in her voice. Despite her failure, he still survived, even though it was only here. “Too bad all those letters you need to deliver to him are at your desk... if you still have them.” It had been a big blow to both of them. And neither said a word to Aerith or his family. It had been left a mystery. [break][break]
She closed her eyes and took a slow breath. “It’s strange, isn’t it.” They were both loyal to Shinra and yet there was nothing to serve here. “We can do whatever we please here. Yet we cling to the past.” She said gently, looking down at the bourbon in her hands. “I feel like I’m lost here without real direction.” She gave a soft sigh. The bourbon must be affecting her mind. She placed an elbow along the arm of her chair and leaned her cheek along the back of her hand. “I do all this work and it feels like there's no meaning or purpose behind it.” She admitted shaking her head. Without serving a purpose greater than herself, it felt bland. [break][break] She waved a hand as if she must have been spouting nonsense. “How long have you been in Sonora? Have you found anywhere to settle? You are welcome to stay here as long as you need. It’s still being furnished but I can arrange something comfortable.”
Cissnei put on a smug smile and it gave Tseng a slight chill. Out of all his Turks, she seemed the sweetest but she was also the one you really needed to watch. Reno wore his heart on his sleeve and Rude was straight to the point. Elena was a little too cautious, and seem to need validation on most things. Kill them with kindness seemed to be Cissnei's motto. He wondered if she was still like that, and exactly how long she had been here. "That they do." Hadn't he just said that to Hojo days before?
As he listened to her, he looked out of the window. This place was a mystery to him, but he wondered if there was anyone who did have knowledge of what was going on. "So is there a reason as to why people are showing up here?" Listening to those around him had been somewhat useful. He heard people talk about being pulled here, but no one had said why. Maybe Cissnei knew something.
Her next statement made him turn towards her with an eyebrow raised. So she had seen him. Tseng knew it would hit her pretty hard to see him again. She was the one that had tried to help Fair, but had not succeeded. Tseng took some blame as well. If he had just told her what his intentions were in capturing Fair, she wouldn't have been so secretive about letting him get away. They both could have saved him. "Well, I'm glad to hear he is doing well. Perhaps I will track him down and apologize. I should have explained my reasons in finding him sooner. It might have ended differently for him that way."
"Unfortunately the letters are in Gaia." Now he wondered if miss Gainborough was here as well. Tseng watched Cissnei close her eyes, wondering what was going through her head as she spoke of independence. "We were loyal to Shinra for a very long time. It's only natural to feel lost when released out on your own." A part of him felt the same way, since he hadn't been loyal to Shinra during the last bit of his time on Gaia when Rufus took over. "Everything we do has a purpose, you shouldn't feel that way."
The subject changed as if it had never happened, and he gave a small smile as he took another drink. "About two months. I haven't found a permanent home yet, but staying here would be great. Thank you." He had been staying in houses, whether it was the owners willingly letting him stay or not. Don't worry, he always remembered to let them out of the rooms he locked them in after knocking them unconscious.
[attr="class","crashBody"] Tseng turned to look out the window. The fire glistened his dark hair as he did so. Cissnei took a moment to admire it, before giving a gentle sigh at his question. It was a common question here on Zephon. Why so many outsiders? Cissnei gave a shrug and looked away. “I really cannot say for sure.” She swirled the amber liquid in her glass as she thought. “There was a tomb I went to investigate during my earlier years here. A liche corrupted the crystal and tried to take its command. It was there I learned that these sentient crystals - or whatever inhabits or protects them - might be pulling in people they believe can aid them. Something about more fiends and other crystals weakening spelling the end of this world. They need more ‘carriers of light’ to stop them.” [break][break] Cissnei let that heaviness sink in with a heavy pregnant pause. Then her face cracked into a sardonic smile as she huffed a mirthless laugh. “Us? Carriers of light? Turks know better than to believe that.” They did the dirty work so others didn’t have to get their hands muddied. They cleaned and aired Shinra’s laundry. But, they also held Shinra mandates at bay for those they thought did not deserve its cruel judgement. [break][break] However, doing so most certainly did not redeem the devils. [break][break] “That is all the lead I have. But it does beg the question...if these crystals are seeking aid, why wouldn’t the fiends bring in their own help?” She shook her head and looked back at him, side-eyed. “If you ask me, we are nothing but pawns on the battlefield between the desperate two.” Cissnei owed allegiance to neither. [break][break] She was quiet as he spoke about Zack. “I’m not sure where he currently is.” She said gently, “I last left him in Torensten. He discarded his SOLDIER clothing for something more casual. Though, I’m sure he’ll still carry that buster blade. It has sentimental value.” She gave a soft smile at the thought. “I am glad he gets a second chance, even though I messed up.” [break][break] She remained quiet for a bit as she turned to stare at the fire instead. She shifted in her chair, hair falling over her shoulders. “It was not my choice to be released from Shinra’s leash.” She had grown up under Shinra’s control. She lived in a Shinra orphanage until she was recruited into the Turks. Being released from them caused her quite a shock. Not a pleasant one either. “Everything we do has a purpose…” She said it like she didn’t believe it. “Is that so?” Even when one didn’t serve a master? It certainly didn’t feel that way to her at all. [break][break] She gave a soft nod and moved to stand-up. “Consider it your home too.” She winked, and set her glass on the end table. “Let me see if I got something for you to eat in the kitchenette. I’ll also prepare some items for your stay.” She turned to go do it.
Tseng took another drink as he listened to her explain. When she mentioned earlier years, his head turned towards her again. Years? How long has she been here? Well, well. It seemed as they were pulled here to help. "Nothing sounds like a call for help like pulling people from their world at the brink of death." They were done a favor by getting to live, so seems like they were supposed to owe something.
The laugh that came from Cissnei made Tseng shiver, but not in a bad way. That reaction from himself confused him a little, and he thought that maybe the alcohol was getting to him, though he had not drank much. At her comment, he chuckled as well. "The light is the last thing we carry, I don't think this world quite knew what it was doing." They could add more fire to the fuel rather than helping it. Her question made him think. "Who knows. Maybe there was conflict somewhere, which would make your assumption of us being pawns correct at least."
Hearing her voice get quiet, Tseng looked to his glass. If he had just told her what was going on, this all could have been avoided. He wanted Zack and Cloud to be brought to him specifically so he could put them into hiding while they healed. "If I know Zack the way I think I do, he will do just fine now that you've shown him the way." Zack may not have been the smartest guy he knew, but he knew how to communicate with others and defend himself. Tseng's eyes snapped to Cissnei. "There will be none of that. It was my fault, I am the one who holds the blame."
Giving a nod, Tseng took another small drink. "You may not know what it is yet, but yes. Everything happens for a reason." That was the way life went. You made mistakes to learn from them, you succeeded to learn from that as well. Cissnei started to leave, and Tseng grabbed her wrist. "I shall come with you. If I am going to be staying here, it would be best to know where everything is." He stood up as he let go of her wrist, setting his drink down as well. Turning his gaze to her, he gave her a half smile, half smirk, waiting for her to lead the way.
