A lot had happened since Caius had seen Yuna last. But there was a particular development that he felt needed to be discussed with her. It didn't feel like all that long ago that Caius and Yuna had last met up and had been taken hostage by Darlene and her forces in the Original Sin, before Caius had killed Darlene in order to protect Vordun. Caius had been dealing with the Original Sin in increasing ferocity since, and he wouldn't be surprised if Yuna had been dealing with the same issue. But now, things had escalated even further for very specific reasons, and he felt now was a good time to speak to her regarding it. After all, it was her that he'd found the list with, and he was one of the few who knew about the lieutenants.
But it was also just that he hadn't seen her in some time, and he considered her a close friend at this point. So he had sent a letter out to Yuna requesting to meet up at a tavern in Provo, hoping to set up a meeting and see how the summoner was. He supposed there was also the whole High Summoner thing to discuss with her too, after meeting Declan. That was a very dangerous secret to keep from him. While he understood why, seeing as her being High Summoner in her world likely meant she needed to keep that secret... But her keeping it secret from the Dragonblades could potentially put other Dragonblades in danger without understanding why. If they were to protect her, they needed to be aware of what from and why. It was the only way they could protect themselves as well as her.
Once the meeting had been set up, Caius found himself in a tavern in Torensten. He had seated himself in a booth and had begun sketching something in a book while he waited for Yuna. His eyes looked tired. In truth, having to put Celes through the pain of having to kill another human being, even if that human being was Charon, had weighed on him in recent days. It would be some time before he was his old self again.

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Truthfully, while Yuna was looking forward to seeing Caius again, she was also a little ashamed by how she’d handled everything since their last meeting. Their departure had been a little awkward to say the least—she had been fairly reproachful about him killing Darlene—but time had softened her stance on what had happened at the bandits’ underground base. Darlene hadn’t been the type of person who could be reasoned with. They likely would have had to have killed her just to escape, let alone to free the people being held hostage. It needed to be done. With that in mind, Yuna didn't think she could hold anything against Caius just because of his expression while he’d done it. Caius had protected her and Vordun, and she was grateful for that.
Anyway, Caius had far more reason to be mad at her if he knew how careless she’d been since they’d split off in Torensten. She wasn’t looking forward to telling him that she’d lost Aera, shared an odd moment of understanding with Ardyn, and confronted the witch who had attacked Torensten while alone in the mountains.
On second thought, maybe she would keep a few of those to herself unless asked. Yuna wasn’t sure that she could deny any accusations of having a death wish when confronted with all of that evidence.
Slipping into the tavern, Yuna shared a brief smile with the bartender as the bell over the door signaled her arrival before she scanned the clean, wooden interior. In the furthest corner, she spotted a head of long blond hair, and she moved over to join her friend, shooting him a warm smile as she slid into the booth across from him.
“It’s been a long time. I was starting to worry that something had happened before I got your letter,” she confided, doing her best to avoid peeking at what he had been sketching in his notebook. It didn’t feel polite to stare, after all. Still, she couldn’t help but notice that the circles under his eyes had become more pronounced since the last time that she’d seen him, and a slight frown crossed her face. “How are you? Really?” Yuna asked softly as she leaned forward over the top of the table. “I haven’t been back to Torensten in a while. Are things getting worse?”
This go around, Caius had been sketching what seemed to be the shape of a large, grotesque dragon-like creature. At the top was scribbled "Charon's Illusion Dragon". In this book, he had been sketching from memory monsters he had been fighting, along with information on them that he had learned. It was a reference book, essentially. A guide for Caius to consult and study for times he may fight monsters later. The sketches weren't too bad either, and it was clear he had been sketching in the thing for at least a few years. The cover looked a little worn, and like it had taken some battle damage - a testament to the years it had lasted.
He perked up when he heard the sound of footsteps coming a bit too closely. His hands slowly fell out of view, under the table. A dagger materialized in his hand, though his expression remained calm. Cold, expressionless. At least until he looked up to see just who had approached.
He smiled lightly when he recognized who it was though. The dagger under the table disappeared soon after. While they had left on shakier terms, he held no real grudge against Yuna. Even he had questioned what he had done, though his biggest concern was Celes. With Celes seeming fine with it though, he'd settled on the matter. Even if Darlene's death haunted him, he knew that he had done what was necessary to ensure the survival of others. But he had been responsible for more death since, and this time it was something he had unintentionally pushed on his best friend.
But he tried not to show that when Yuna showed. The bags under his eyes indicated he was seriously tired, but he kept a smile nonetheless. Yuna asked how he was, though the addition of "Really" indicated she knew he was likely going to give a generic response to throw off her worry. He simply shrugged his shoulders as he answered bluntly instead.
"Celes killed Charon."
He let that hang for a moment before he elaborated, his voice dry and a little hoarse. He didn't seem able to fully meet her eyes either. Yuna would likely recognize the name from the list of lieutenants they had found last time they had met up. "Charon and his forces slaughtered an entire village of people and used magic to impersonate them to lure in travellers as well as family members. Killed and robbed them all. Celes and I were nearly caught in the snare, but managed to expose them. Charon..." He trailed off, as he let out a resigned sigh. "... Wasn't happy that I killed his daughter. Apparently cruelty is hereditary, who would have thought?" He remarked, in some small attempt at dry wit. Though it was clear his heart wasn't in it. Still, it was enough information to tell her who he was referring to.
"Entire village worth of bandits were on us. Had to call in Vordun. Made the judgement call that leaving Charon alive was too risky now that he knew our activities were a Dragonblades affair. Didn't like it, but had to be done."
He made some attempt to meet her eyes throughout but the attempt started to come apart a little when he got to the next part.
"Celes refused my request to do so. Went down and did it herself while I covered her."
He reached forward and took a long swig of the drink he had been polishing off. He supposed there was no point in hiding his feelings as he managed to meet her eyes.
"Not a fan of subjecting Celes to that. I killed Darlene. What came next should have been my responsibility. She's had to kill enough people in her lifetime. I didn't want her to have to do it again. Yet I did."
He shook his head. He knew if he hid anything of it, she'd know. He didn't hide well.
"I put her at risk too. The plan to take Charon down was incredibly risky for whoever was tasked with going on the ground to kill him. I would have rather risked myself than her."
A silence. A deep breath. A moment to settle. A moment to drink.
"We need to be ready for consequences. All of us do. We've killed two of their leaders. We've severely crippled their operations. There will be a response."
Another breath. Then he looked to her, changing the topic a moment to what had been foremost in his mind about this meeting, aside from warning Yuna to watch herself. He seemed to calm a little more now that the topic was swapping to her.
"I have to ask, and I apologize if this is abrupt. How long were you intending to keep your position from us, High Summoner?" He inquired curtly. "It's your business, of course, and I understand not wanting to draw attention to it. I'm not angry at you. But with people being popped in from other worlds, including your own... Your position likely puts a bigger target on your back, and in turn, ours. We do not mind this. It's a dangerous line of work to begin with, a small amount more won't phase us. But a word of warning to better watch ourselves and you would have been appreciated."
It made no difference to him if she was a huge deal back home. But he did care about the practical benefit of knowing what they could potentially be dealing with.
"If you have any enemies from your world, anyone that might be targeting the High Summoner, that we should be watching out for. Please let us know. Your enemies are ours."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna had thought that Caius looked a bit more wan and tired than he had when they had parted ways outside the bandit camp, but she hadn’t expected to immediately learn the reason why as he laid aside the battered notebook that he had been sketching in.
"Celes killed Charon."
“…Oh.” Her head tilted forward slightly until her hair partially obscured her face. “You found another lieutenant?” Sudden guilt settled over her. While she had been off tracking down Ardyn, she had left her friends to fend for themselves against the bandits. Had she really expected the threat to just stop while she was gone? The Dragonblades had already been a target, and that would only have increased after Caius had killed Darlene. She should have come back sooner. Maybe she could have helped.
Caius started to give her the outline of what had happened, and Yuna raised one hand to her mouth at the description of how they had massacred an entire village. She mostly stayed quiet and let him tell his story, but she wasn’t able to keep from commenting when he tiredly implied that Charon was Darlene’s father. “…Then it’s a family business?” The idea was distasteful, particularly when she thought about her own father. She couldn’t imagine someone teaching their child how to do the things that the pair had done together.
Caius finished his story by expressing clear regret that Celes had been the one to kill Charon instead of him, and Yuna shook her head before raising her head to look him in the eye. “It wasn’t your fault.” She hoped that he understood the double meaning in her words. This wasn’t, and Darlene wasn’t either.
“I’ve always wanted to think that everyone can be saved, but however much I want it to, the world doesn’t work like that. If…we didn’t kill them, then they’d never stop what they’re doing. And they’d try to hurt us.” She hesitated before leaning over the table slightly in earnest. “I’m sure that Celes saw that too, Caius. She wants to protect you as much as you want to with her. Don’t blame yourself.” He might anyway, but she hoped that her words helped alleviate at least a little of his guilt. At the very least, she hoped that it was clear that she didn’t blame him for Darlene after she’d had time to think over the situation rationally.
Leaning back against the chair upholstery, Yuna nodded when her friend said that they needed to be ready for a response. “Let me know if you hear anything else. I know I’ve been gone, but I’m here now. I want to help.” Hopefully she could make up for forcing her friends to deal with Charon alone.
Yuna was so focused on the bandit threat now that when the topic abruptly changed, she was left a little speechless as she stared at the blond man across from her.
“How long were you intending to keep your position from us, High Summoner?”
Yuna floundered for a moment at the unexpected question before a sad smile finally crossed her lips. “Oh. You’ve been talking to Declan.” It wasn’t really a question. She had met the boy inside of the Dragonblade headquarters after all, so it would have been odd if Caius hadn’t run across him while he was joining up. “I…wasn’t trying to keep it from you. I don’t even really know if it’s true,” she admitted, clasping her hands in her lap as considered the grain pattern across the tabletop. “I’m still having memory problems. I remember being fairly new in my journey as a summoner, but I also know that can’t be right, or I wouldn’t be able to summon Shiva.” With the path that she was taking, the ice aeon should have been one of the final Fayth that she called upon before travelling to Zanarkand. She thought that she had been barely used to Ifrit before coming to Zephon, but nothing about that added up.
Yuna hesitated, wondering if she should share why she really had doubts about Declan’s story, but Caius had been so honest with her about Charon that she decided to be open as well. “And high summoners…they die.” She twisted her hands in her lap a bit before looking up again. “I know that I told you about Sin. High summoners are those who gave up their lives to defeat it. So for him to say that I defeated Sin and lived…” Yuna shook her head with a faint smile. “I know I’m missing parts of my life. But no one’s done that in a thousand years.”
She kept to herself why she thought Declan might have been lying. She didn’t think that he was being malicious—entirely the opposite actually. A part of her worried that something terrible had happened to Spira, and that he was trying to comfort her by letting her live a fantasy. She did desperately hope that he was telling the truth—she just wasn’t entirely able to believe it yet.
“…Thank you.” Yuna gave Caius a small smile when he said that her enemies were theirs. “Summoners don’t usually have enemies outside of fiends though. With the church and the people on their side…” Still, even as she spoke, Yuna had a spark of doubt. She’d been trying not to think about the image of Maester Seymour dead on the ground that had flashed in her mind during their escape from the bandit’s prison, but it was something that was hard to forget. Why would she have attacked a maester of Yevon? Did the fault lie with her? Or with the church?
“…It’s possible,” she admitted sheepishly, contradicting what she had just told him. “I’ll keep you updated. I promise.”
"I don't know" Caius spoke softly when Yuna asked if the Original Sin was a family business. "It's possible, but it's likely just a coincidence that they found two very cruel people from the same family line. But I won't know for sure until I figure out more about the remaining two lieutenants."
He wasn't able to meet her eyes anymore when Yuna would bring up that it wasn't his fault. He traced a line on the book with his finger as she went on to say that she was sure Celes understood that not everyone could be redeemed, and that they would only turn around and harm them if they had let Charon go. Caius slowly nodded his head. "I know. It's the only reason I made the call. It wasn't one I made easily" He admitted, though he wasn't able to keep himself away from that faraway expression of his. "She's a grown woman and I know doting over her would only piss her off if she found out."
He didn't understand the double meaning of her words, but he didn't need to. While it was a hard thing, he had mostly made peace with killing Darlene. If he hadn't... Far more lives would be on his hands for not doing so. Including Vordun's. But this... This would be harder to make peace with. He had risked Celes, and subjected her to what needed to be done in this case because of a decision he made. She had made the call to do it herself because he pointed out the necessity to kill Charon. He had led the way to her taking this path, and the way she had looked when it was over was something he wouldn't forget. He didn't know how, but he felt as though in some way he had wounded her. He didn't know how to describe it, though. Not in this moment at least.
"I guess I just... I don't know..." He trailed off. "She's spent a long time in, well... War, and I feel like I've brought another to her doorstep with the call I made. Killing monsters is one thing. Killing people... I know full well she's used to it, but I just... I just..."
He let out a sigh, trying to find words. "She deserves better. If that makes any sense. By making that call and her decision that followed, I've brought back a slice of what she came from. I wish I hadn't done that. I wish that this had been my burden to bear, not hers. I know she's strong... She's probably stronger than me, in a lot of ways, including mentally. Her will is strong, I know that for sure. But I've been asking myself... Does she need to be pushed like this? Just because she can, doesn't mean she should have to. I don't know if this will make any sense, but... I enjoy seeing her smile, even if it's not terribly often. It... Makes me happy, to see her happy. But things like this aren't going to breed that many smiles in the near future."
He shook his head, trying to get it back in order. "I'm sorry. I... I'm just rambling at this point. I know it's stupid to dwell on the past."
He took a breath, steeling himself as he managed to look Yuna in the eyes once more. "What's done is done. Now we prepare for what is to come."
What followed was the question of her position, and he watched with a cautious eye her reaction. She would insist she had no memory of her being a High Summoner, and that any who had actually reached that position had died. He tapped his fingers on the table a moment as he mulled it over. "According to... Our friend, that girl, Ardyn's fiance..." He trailed off. What was her name again? It was getting hazy... Odd. "She died. Ardyn's brother and the Founder King of Lucis, killed her while aiming for Ardyn in a bid for the throne. So people dying and coming here fully alive is not uncommon. You're the first and only case I've met to arrive without their memories, though" He pointed out. "But Declan's explanation indicates you survived. So it's very likely you just found a way around it, which makes sense considering what I've seen of your capabilities even without most of your memories. I wouldn't worry about it."
He doubted Declan was being dishonest. He didn't seem the type. Either way, Yuna would indicate she had no enemies she knew offhand that might come for her, but that she would alert him if need be. "That's all I ask. The least that can be done is keep us prepared for attack. I can definitely say we'll likely have to expect retaliation from the Original Sin soon... It wouldn't surprise me considering what Celes and I have just done."
He took a breath. "Speaking of... Two things, just to quickly catch you up. First up, I've been following up on the notes I got from Darlene's base. I've been identifying slave buyers and dealing with them, and notifying the authorities on what they've done. Declan's been helping me out, as have a few other recruits. Second... Earlier, I mentioned the Founder King. Well, said Founder King barged into our base while you were away and demanded to see a Kingsglaive. It didn't go well. He's a dick. I told him that I hope he and his brother kill each other."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna wanting to play matchmaker with him and Celes now
I will live with my sorrow
Yuna didn’t know if her words helped Caius feel better or not, but she wasn’t able to resist a small laugh when he said that Celes would be mad if she knew how worried he was about this. “You’re right. She’d only tell you that she could handle herself…”
Still, her smile faded again as Caius seemed to be trying to find the right words to explain why this was bothering him so much. He spoke about the blonde woman’s past--Yuna had known that Celes was a general who came from a ruined world, but she hadn’t thought about what revisiting that time might be doing to the woman. Yuna’s eyes softened as Caius fumbled his words while explaining that he just wanted Celes to be happy. His guilt made far more sense to her now. He clearly cared for the co-founder of the Dragonblades more than he had words for. With how clueless Caius tended to be about these things, Yuna suspected that he might have even been in love with her, but she didn’t want to stick her nose in that too early. That was something Caius needed to come to his own conclusion on.
“No, that makes complete sense. You really care about her, so you don’t want her to do anything that might bring up bad memories.” She hesitated before briefly reaching out to lay a hand on his arm. “Maybe you should talk to her about that? I don’t think she’d be mad if she knew that the reason you were upset wasn’t because you thought that she couldn’t handle it…”
Celes was a proud and capable woman, but it was always nice to hear when someone cared. Yuna thought that the general might appreciate it even if she wouldn’t admit it or didn’t know how to respond. Really, they were perfect for each other in that way. They were both a little clueless, and Yuna had to fight back a giggle as she thought about it. She didn’t want Caius to think that she was laughing at the serious situation, after all.
Yuna sat back in her chair as the topic returned to her past, and she adjusted her silk sleeves, feeling troubled as Caius pointed out that some people who arrived in Zephon claimed to have been dead in their world. “That’s true…” Could she have died facing Sin? It would make the most sense, and it could even explain why her memories were muddled, but Declan had seemed adamant that Yuna was alive. She wasn’t sure that she could bring herself to believe that she’d found a way to defeat Sin for good though. It seemed too beautiful a thought to be true when no other summoner had ever managed the task. Still, she couldn’t help the grateful smile that she gave Caius when he expressed that he had no doubt that she’d managed it.
“Thank you. I hope you’re right at any rate.” Still, if she had found another way...that suggested that she’d ignored the teachings and bypassed the final summoning, didn’t it? Her thoughts flashed again to Caius’ question of whether or not she had enemies, and Yuna twisted her ring around one finger as she wondered what the church of Yevon had thought of her method. Once again, she recalled that flash of Maester Seymour, seemingly dead on the ground in front of her, and she was grateful for the subject change when Caius said that he had two things left to discuss with her.
First, he gave her an update on where he stood with researching the Original Sin, and Yuna nodded seriously when he talked about the slavers and the buyers that he’d managed to report to the authorities. “If I can be of any help, then let me know.” The thought of people being put up for auction still made something in her blood boil when she thought about it, so she was a little caught off guard when the subject switched to Ardyn.
“The...man who killed Aera? He’s here?” The thought wasn’t a good one. Ardyn was a problem enough on his own, but it seemed that his sadism must have run in the family if his brother was also a murderer. Yuna gave Caius a slightly disapproving look when he said that he had wished death on the man to his face, but she supposed that she couldn’t really blame him given the circumstances. Yuna had rather liked what she had seen of Aera. She couldn’t imagine anyone wanting to harm the well-spoken Oracle.
“I’ll be on the look-out for him then if he might be causing problems too. Does he look anything like Ardyn?” Ardyn was such a threat on his own that it was odd to think that the red-haired man had been the victim in his brother’s schemes, losing both the throne and his fiancee to the man’s blade. She wondered if that was why he had seemed so sad and so bent on vengeance against the gods the night that she had last encountered him. The thought reminded her that she unfortunately had something else to report to Caius.
“Ardyn is...still here. In Provo. I saw him going into a local tavern. I followed thinking he might try to hurt the other patrons.” She smiled a little sadly as she folded her hands together in her lap. “No one was hurt, but he...somewhat implied that he would turn the entire building to daemons unless I sat and had a drink with him. Truthfully, he seemed sad and not really in the mood to fight.” It had been the scariest and strangest encounter of her life, but she wanted to voice her honest opinion to Caius. “I think I pity him,” she admitted quietly. “But I know what he did to your world. And what he’s done to people here. It won’t stop me from what needs to be done if we ever get the chance. I promise.”
Words. What were words? Caius was having a lot of trouble with words at the moment and he wasn't sure why. He had guessed it was just due to stress, but he wasn't entirely sure, either. The incident at the village had been incredibly tumultuous, and very straining on the both of them. So it was very possible that this was what was causing him to stumble when he spoke.
Yuna suggested that he talk to her, and he nodded a bit, but also scratched his head as he took a moment to consider his words carefully. "I've considered it. I... I hesitated. When she first stated her intentions. And she didn't look happy when I did. Knowing her, she probably thinks I consider her, well... Yeah. Like someone that couldn't handle it, when that's the furthest thing from the truth. I figured if anyone could handle it, it was her. But..." He trailed off. "It wasn't just because of that, that I hesitated either. Something hit me in that moment, not just the realization that I would be bringing old memories back to her door that she doesn't deserve to have to deal with, but... Also when considering the risks of the plan. I've been trying to find the words to explain to her why, because I know odds are she's not happy with me, but... I don't know. I'm probably just overthinking it, but we've had our share of fights before because I have failed to word things adequately. The last thing I want to do is give her the wrong idea. Again. The last thing I want is more stress on her than necessary."
On the topic of Yuna's position and enemies, he just nodded his head at her responses. He was confident that whatever was going on with Yuna's memories, they would return and she would find that she, as Caius expected, had found a way to live through Sin. Perhaps losing her memories and being sent here was the result of a powerful magic that she had used to kill Sin without losing her life? She was clearly incredibly gifted, so that wasn't out of the realm of possibility. He would need to check in with her about her memories later, and see if anything had returned.
Caius nodded again when Yuna would offer aid in dealing with the slave owners. "I will. I think I've got it pretty well in hand though. Admittedly it's getting harder now that it's getting around that the slave owners are being arrested though. They're getting better at hiding now that they know I'm out for them. But I think I can handle it."
In regards to the topic of Ardyn's fiance and his brother, he nodded again to her question. She also would reveal she had met Ardyn, but had ended up drinking with him. Noting that he seemed sad. Even said she pitied him. Caius didn't seem bothered by the prospect though, just gave another understanding nod. He let her finish before he would answer in full. "Somnus, The Mystic, The Founder King. Black hair, slender, height is in the fives. Doesn't really look like Ardyn, he's the spitting image of King Noctis, actually."
He shook his head. "I am fully aware from Aera that he is responsible for what led Ardyn to do what he did. When he gave me the impression that he didn't give a damn when I told him about it, that's about the point I more or less told him to eat crow. So it didn't go well from there" He explained. He had seen that disapproving look from her, but it was what it was. "Somnus is a disgrace to the history of the Kingdom of Lucis, and by extension... The line of Lucis and the Kingsglaive. Not only has he sullied the name of that which I have pledged my life to... But I and many others suffered for a decade because of him and his stupid brother's power struggle. His greed, and his brother's bitterness."
He shrugged his shoulders. "I do pity Ardyn, to an extent. I met him once in a bar, not all that unlike what you described. As he was immortal, I tried to buy information from him with a drink instead of engaging him. Didn't pan out. With what I know now thanks to Aera... While I pity him and wish dearly that he could have had that happy ending with Aera that the two of them should have had - the fact is that between Ardyn and Somnus, they share the responsibility of what happened to Lucis, and to the fact I lost everything. And I will never forget, nor forgive."
He managed a small smile, trying to reassure her. "My mission remains the same though, no matter where my head's at. Protect the people that have given me a second chance at life, from monsters such as those two and the Original Sin. No matter how much I need to train, no matter how much I have to put myself through... That's something that I will do. No matter their circumstances, or their bloodline. And I hope I can count on you when and if the time comes."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Caius seemed to be trying to consider his words carefully after Yuna suggested that he should talk to Celes about his feelings, and eventually he explained that he was worried about giving her the wrong idea. “Oh.” A slight smile tugged at her lips as she mulled his point over. “You do put your foot in your mouth a lot…” Yuna had never really minded much. It was honestly a little charming in its own right, and it reminded her a bit of her guardians. Caius somehow had all the tact of Tidus with all the stoic brashness of Auron. Still, she could see how that might clash with someone as hot-headed as Celes.
“I can talk to her if you want. Woman to woman.” Her smile this time was a little teasing even if she was serious. She didn’t want Caius and Celes to be on awkward terms over a misunderstanding, after all. Especially when it was clearly weighing on her friend so much.
Yuna nodded when Caius said that he thought he had the situation with the Original Sin pretty under control. “I know. Just...be careful. I’m sure the other two leaders have it out for you. And I want to be there for you when they make a move.” She still felt a little guilty about leaving him and Celes to deal with Charon, but nothing could change that now.
Caius gave her a little more background on Somnus, who she hadn’t heard of until now, and she was frowning by the end of it. “You’re right. He sounds as bad as Ardyn. Worse maybe if he started everything…” She did her best to memorize his titles and physical appearance, though she couldn’t help the faintest smile when he said that Somnus was nearly the twin of Noctis. “I hope I don’t attack your king by accident then,” she said, though it was mostly a joke. She wasn’t the type to attack without asking questions first, and she was sure that Caius knew it. “I’ll keep an eye out up here then. I have a feeling that a meeting between the two of them might be fairly destructive…”
Ardyn had nearly demolished an entire hospital trying to kill her on their first meeting after all, and that was only because he thought she was an Oracle. She hated to think what he would be willing to destroy in order to hurt the man actually responsible for his suffering.
Shaking her head, she smiled more genuinely at Caius when he said that he didn’t blame her for having some pity for Ardyn. It appeared that he did as well, which must have taken a huge amount of strength given what the man had done to his world. Yuna imagined that it would have been a bit like her feeling empathy for Sin.
“I understand.” She sat forward a little as he spoke about how it wouldn’t stop him because he’d do whatever it took to protect his new life. “Honestly...I was pretty lost on what I wanted to do in this world until I joined up with the Dragonblades. But you’re right, I have people to protect here now, even if I can’t return to Spira. So if I can help, then say the word, and I’ll be there.”

Caius realized in that moment they had been trying to have two, maybe three conversations at once. He knew he liked to multi-task and that could cause this habit, but he knew he should try and make things a bit less confusing. After she had spoken, he did his best to streamline things.
"I know this is going to be a little harder going forward, but I think we've got this" He spoke softly with a small smile, relating to the situation with the Original Sin. "I'll call on you if you're in the area and I see a lead though. After what happened with Darlene and Charon... Things are going to be interesting" He admitted. "As for Noctis and Somnus... I think you'll know. One King is gentle, kind... Kind of awkward. Soft spoken. The other came off as arrogant, pompous. Very full of himself... You'll know."
As cruel as it sounded, he really did just hope the two, Somnus and Ardyn, took each other out. It would do this world a favor.
"As far as your memories go... It's very much possible it's just a side effect of whatever sent you here. I'm confident you survived, became High Summoner, and perhaps were even brought here of your own volition, to stave off some new threat. I mean, that's the job of the summoner, right? To ward off the big bad? If your big bad is gone, perhaps your gods simply felt you were needed here" He suggested. "Perhaps that purpose will become clear in time."
Then it came to the big topic, and he wasn't sure what to say, not at first anyway. But he did try.
"I'll admit, I was lost when I first came here too. Celes is the reason I managed to put myself together and do all of this" He remarked, scratching his head. "My time working with Celes, travelling the world, has shown me that I have a role to play here. It may not be decided by the gods or anything, but... You're right about one thing. You have people here to protect now... As do I. As far as Celes herself goes..." He trailed off, thinking on her offer for a moment. Words, again, WORDS.
"I... I don't know" He admitted quietly, seeming to finally be getting to her previous offer. "I think... Oh, how do I say this... Celes knows I value her highly. I'm sure she knows I think the world of her and her capabilities, I haven't been shy about telling her that. But... As far as what happened on that mission goes, I think... And this isn't easy to say..." He trailed off. "... Throughout all of this, Celes has become... What's the word... She's become invaluable to me. Irreplaceable... Essential, even. I've grown to rely on her. And I don't always understand all of it, I'll admit. It still sort of confuses me, I've spent all these years relying on myself, surviving by myself... And now, I just... I can't imagine doing all of this without her."
He bit the corner of his lip, still struggling a bit with his words and mostly just going with the first thing that hit the ground, so to speak.
"I think... What I realized when considering the risks of that plan... No matter how great Celes is, no matter how incredible of a combatant she is, and she is stronger and more level headed in some ways than I am, it's even possible she had a better chance of making that plan work than I did, but... The risk was still there. I think what hit me is that... If she dies..."
He hesitated to say it. He knew there was no going back if he said this. There was no taking back the admittance that he relied on her. There was no taking back accepting that he was no longer doing this on his own, in a sense. He had grown to rely on someone. Someone had become completely essential. And he didn't know how to handle that still, but if he completed this... There was no going back on it.
But a lot had changed while he was in this world. He supposed that with the Dragonblades... This was possibly just a natural conclusion. Maybe it was time to let go of old habits, old viewpoints, old ways of looking at things. They were from a world that he would most likely never return to. Tied to traumas and experiences long gone and past.
Maybe it was time to stop living in them.
"If she dies... I may as well have."
And there it was.
"I can imagine myself dying for this cause, if it comes to it. I've been prepared for that since the day we formed. I pledged to die for one cause a long time ago if needed, and I pledged for this one too. But I can't imagine continuing this mission without her. And deep down... That kind of scares me" He admitted quietly, looking down at the table a moment. "This is... Very unfamiliar to me. And with it, comes a lot of worries that I didn't have so long ago. But at the same time, I don't want Celes to think that I'm planning to coddle her, or overly protect her from doing anything that might put her in danger, or be risky... Because at the end of this day, this is our job. I'd put her life over mine if it came to it, but I know she wants to do all this, and I won't stop her from that. Because I do think she's the most competent and skilled combatant I've met."
He almost smiled, just a little. "It's funny, I've met a summoner who can summon the gods themselves, a witch that can bend time, an empress, the equivalent to a covert ninja mafia..." He trailed off, humor starting to grace his voice as the point began to form. "... But Celes is probably the last woman, if not the last person I want to meet on the battlefield. Not because of my care for her, but... Holy cow, she's tough."
He chuckled a bit, though his voice grew soft again afterword. "I just... Don't know how to convey all this to her. Or if I should at all, to be honest. I don't want to overwhelm her. She's got enough on her mind. I'm kind of tempted to accept your offer, but... At the same time..." He spoke as he met her eyes again. "... I think this is something I should do. Somehow. At the end of the day, I can't just hide behind other people when my own weaknesses come up. This is a challenge I need to rise to."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna nodded when Caius said that he would call on her for help with the bandits if she was in the area. That was all she could expect really, and she laughed a little when he moved on to say that the difference between Noctis and Somnus should be obvious if she came across one of them. She assumed that it would be, but it was still a little problematic that they looked identical at first glance. It made her feel a little sorry for Noctis that he had to live with that legacy.
“...Thank you.” She said in response to his confidence that she really had survived killing Sin. It still felt like one of those things that was too good to be true, but maybe that was why it was helpful to have an outside perspective in this case. To her, the final summoning was an undeniable fact of life. To him it was just a story from another world.
Her smile came back when he pointed out that the job of a summoner was to get rid of the ‘big bad’ as he called it. “You’re right,” she said with a laugh. “Well, that would be a thousand worries off my mind at least if Spira really is free from Sin. That was one of the main reasons that I wanted to go back. But...well. Maybe I’m free to focus on here now.” It was a startling realization. It had always felt like she’d had one foot back in Spira, but maybe it was time to move on. She wasn’t entirely sure if that felt freeing or sad.
Caius broached the difficult topic of what had happened with Celes, and Yuna felt her smile widen as he danced around his feelings and seemed to be trying to find the right words for what was going on in his head. Finally, he admitted that he would be completely lost if she died, and Yuna’s eyes softened as she rested her chin on one hand that was propped up on the table. “I thought it was something like that. And I agree. She’d be terrifying to face in battle.” Not as horrifying as Ardyn or Ultimecia, but as far as her allies went, Celes was definitely up there.
“This is a challenge I need to rise to.”
“This isn’t a battle,” Yuna said with a slight smile, but at the same time, she didn’t blame Caius for thinking of it that way. He was probably most comfortable with a sword, so if it helped him to think of conquering a foe while he was confronting his feelings, then whatever worked for him was a good thing. “Alright, I’ll respect your decision. That’s probably for the best anyway.” At least she hoped so. Caius tended to put his foot in his mouth, but as long as he said something close to what he’d told Yuna, then she thought that Celes would appreciate it. His feelings would probably come through at any rate.
Still, she thought that it couldn’t hurt to give him one last push.
“From what you said…” Yuna hesitated as she laced her fingers together in her lap. “Do you think you’re in love with her?” It was a forward question. The type that she never would have asked while she was back on Spira, but this wasn’t her world. This place moved fast, and she wanted Caius to think over what he wanted before it was too late for anyone.
