[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] Taking care of the daily chores in such a remote place like this one wasn’t always an easy task for the young Muireach woman. The cottage in which Miss Edith and the children lived always needed continuous maintenance on each of its floors with a garden that demanded to be tended almost every day to avoid shortages of fruits and vegetables in the kids’ plates so that they could grow up into strong and healthy adults later on. Of course, the most rigorous jobs that needed to be done around the orphanage were left in the care of Nerissa as she did not want any of them to get hurt while they attended their (boring) afternoon classes with the directress. And yet, even then, she’d need the occasional help of the three oldest children of the place, Theron, Maela, and Reed, to be able to complete the tasks in time before the coming of dusk. Thankfully, she wouldn’t need to ask for their help today since the chores were simple to do on the list of things Miss Edith had given them about two hours ago.
“Good job, Galen. We’re almost done with our basket of berries. Soon, you’ll be able to eat them as a delicious pie for the midday meal~. Are you excited?” She playfully told him in a childish tone, earning him a cute little smile on his lips as he thought of the tart he would be eating for lunch with everybody else. “Yeah? How nice~.”
As she was about to ask him another naive question to keep him entertain, the sound of hoofs stamping quietly on the ground made their way at the front of the little house and, immediately enough, the young woman rose to her feet and directed her attention towards the approaching chocobo and its rider. From a far distance, she could only distinguish the blond hair of the man and his flashy armor that seemed of greater quality than the one she used to wear as a Cursebreaker back in Valisthea. Naturally, this proved to be quite useful in terms of information, not that she was going to judge him for his tutor’s abilities or anything, but she’d have a better idea as to whom Yuna had sent at this faraway place. Thankfully, the children do not seem to be startled in his presence, which is a good sign to me.
Nerissa calmly waited for the tutor to get off from his horse, and once he made his way towards her, she offered him a kind greeting, answering the only question he had for her since arriving here. “It is I, my good sir. And you are…?”

Is he the tutor Yuna sent us? He seems... quite stoic.
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] The sun was slowly setting down in the horizon when two women entered an old inn at the skirt of the city of Provo. The building seemed quite empty from the outside - hell, it looked almost abandoned - but once the strangers set foot inside, music and loud voices instantly filled their ears like a merry party on Christmas’ eve.
“They seem to be in very high spirits tonight.” Nerissa commented, her eyes looking from right to left at all the people that were assembled here to drink with old friends and family members for one evening only before they’d repeat the same thing the next day. Ha, Gav would have loved this atmosphere…, she thought to herself, a nostalgic smile soon creeping up her lips while she searched for a way to go up on the second floor without bringing much attention to her while she did so. Wearing cloaks did help them conceal their true identities from other people, but with their uncommon accents from the Rosarian countryside, most villagers would eye them from afar as if the two young women were the plague itself.
“Looks like I’ll have to make this quick…” She then added before spotting a set of stairs, which she calmly walked towards right after telling Sia to wait for her downstairs until it was okay for her to go upstairs. “I’ll be back shortly.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once arrived in front of the guest room, Nerissa knocked a total of two times on the door before turning the knob on the side and entering the place like she has already done a couple of times now, making sure to close the door behind her once she was inside the room so that no one would disturb her while she had a small private chit-chat with an old acquaintance of hers.
“I didn’t know you would be here so soon, your highness.” She declared, her body turning away from the entrance towards the young man sitting on the bed whose piercing blue eyes analyzed her from head-to-toe before a gentle smile made its way to his lips. “I apologize for the delay this short meeting may have caused you during your peaceful travels around the continent. I only wished to see if you have been faring well lately, knowing how harsh and unpredictable the climate can be around Zephon.”
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] Another chuckle escaped from the young woman’s mouth, Nerissa clearly enjoying this conversation that she had with the female engineer on the topic of sending other people on the field to accomplish her daily tasks while she was hiding in her lab to create a new revolutionizing invention that would help the transportation area. It was often a sphere that was left out from other thinkers minds due to the amount of work and research it would need in order to achieve a final product of their designed apparatus, but luckily for the Dragonblades, Mid wasn’t someone who imposed limits on her building talents, often going at great lengths to construct a ship (and now an airship!) for whatever reason she had found to convince herself into assembling one at her own workshop. “I can’t wait to see this new invention up in the sky, Mid. I might even give it a try if you assure me that it is safe enough for me to take a seat in this aircraft once it is operational and running in the ether.” After all, who would risk their lives again when they just got resuscitated into this new world for a second chance at life that some of them did not deserve, which included Benedikta, Kupka and a couple of others whom the two woman didn’t wish to ever see again in this life for all of the times they had made them suffer for the wrong reasons, whether it’d be on a physical or mental level in their case.
Her eyes had slightly darkened at the mention of these tyrants, herself remembering the destruction and blood they shed whenever they crossed the paths of innocent people that had only asked one single little thing: to live. “If I ever see one of them again in this twisted reality that we live in, I shall take their lives with my own hands… just like they unjustly did with our comrades not so long ago.” She replied, the faint memory of good ol’ Goldie singing around drunkenly around the campfire while her brother, Edwyn, made sure he and the rest of the Cursebreakers didn’t do anything dangerous amidst the euphoria of having won yet another battle against the king’s minions in Valisthea. “If the others were here, I’m sure they’d think the same way as I do…” She mumbled to herself before reporting her eyes towards Cid’s daughter. Just like he protected all of us from these monsters in the past, I, too, shall do the same and protect his dear child from whoever wishes to hurt her in this world. That is a promise.
“Anyhow, if ever you need anything else other than pens to help you finish your project at your workshop, do let me know. I might go visit some ancient ruins again in the northern part of Torensten starting next week. They might contain certain valuable materials in there so I’ll try bringing you a few of them back to your workshop to make your list of tasks smaller as time goes on.”
Founder, please don't let them be alive again in this world...
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] The sun shone brightly in the east when little children and their caretakers began to exit the little cottage alongside their caretakers who were just as excited as them to start this new day under good weather.
“It seems like the gods have granted us our wish today.” The older caretaker said, a gorgeous smile painted across her lips that made her look a bit younger than her actual age.
Nerissa nodded in reply to the old woman’s comment concerning the weather, herself smiling as well at the sight of the lovely sun while the children from the orphanage began to do their daily tasks prior to the start of their classes before noon.
“It looks like it.” She kindly replied to her before bringing back her attention towards her young students, having wanted to ask Madam Edith about this new teacher all of the kids were referring to since she arrived last night. “I heard from the children that a new tutor would come to the orphanage today. Is that true?”
“Yes, indeed. After you’ve told me to send in a request to the Dragonblades’ headquarter in Provo for another instructor, I received notice that a young man would soon visit us to help you teach the children more advanced notions and skills that would be beneficial for them in the future.”
The young lady chuckled in relief, glad that Miss Yuna had accepted their request for a new tutor to come to Madam Edith’s orphanage on such a short notice. “That’s great news. I wonder who this person might be since there are not a lot of people who would come to such a remote place like this one.”
“I have no clue either, Miss Nerissa.” She responded, slowly setting back to the cottage in order to take care of a 12-month old child named Evie. “Anyway, please let me know if you need anything. Otherwise, I’ll leave you in charge of these little troublemakers for the rest of the day.”
Nerissa giggled and nodded once again at her words. “I’ll take note of that. Thank you.” She said to her in response, and when the other caretaker was out of sight, she finally began her first task of the day and asked three-year old Galen to accompany her since he was still too little to do chores on his own.
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] Nerissa nodded in agreement to Caius’ words. “Right, I apologize for this overboard politeness. I’m still getting used to this ‘normalness’ in my life following what happened in my old world…”
In fact, the reason why she has been acting like this with the Dragelion man was in part because she was trying to adapt to this new universe with people she barely knew, which brought up her fear of making a mistake that would cause her to be shamed by someone. This fear had only been present when she was working at Rosalith castle under the duchess’ stern and judgy eyes that would look upon each one of the servants working under her to make them remember their place in the hierarchical system. Needless to say, she’d do this to assess her superiority over all of them, as a way to teach them a lesson that if they were to go against her orders or spoke impolitely to the owner of this castle by not referring to her full title, they’d be heavily punished for the sake of keeping a noble image in front of her supporters. How weak-minded of a child I was back then…, she thought, briefly sighing, before her attention went back to Caius’ next question.
“I didn't mean to offend you with my words, Lor- Caius. I simply said what I thought was right to say due to the fear of being reprimanded by you for not acknowledging your aristocratic title if it were found out that you were, indeed, a noble yourself.” She started to explain, her eyes never leaving for one second the serious face of the man who looked at her in curiosity. “Now, I know I shouldn’t be worrying about this in a warm and kind place such as the Wyvern’s rest, but old memories of this troubled time keep resurfacing in my mind, and I can’t help but consider myself an unworthy person each time I am in the presence of a higher ranking official like yourself.” Clearly, Anabella had traumatized the poor girl from an early age, enough so that she still continued seeing herself as a useless person that would never reach the rank she was at due to their difference in status, something Nerissa had never really cared about after joining the Cursebreakers who taught her the beauty of living the “real life” without the need of a noble title. And yet, when she was faced with an unknown reality without her dear friends, all those fears came back out in an instant, which greatly destabilized her while trying to regain composure to become her old self again.
Once her story was done and out of the way, Nerissa couldn’t help but smile at how similar Caius and Celes’s reactions were despite having called them by an aristocratic title on different occasions when only one of them was with her inside this room.
“Anyway, now that I’ve apologized to you concerning this ‘misunderstanding,’ I might tell you more about the Ruins Research Unit and its goal within the Dragonblades. To begin with, the Ruins Research Unit has been created by one of your newly recruited members, Professor Einar Fenwick. He came about two months and half ago, myself arriving into this world only two weeks after this unit was created. He wished to implement a research team within the Dragonblades in order to revolutionize Torensten’s technology while also protecting civilians who were going to visit the ruins on their own. Our tasks included visiting various ruins set around the city, taking out monsters from these places and preventing their reappearances in certain cases. We also researched artifacts to know their significance and powers, and sometimes, we’d even do rescue missions to save people stuck in the ruins, whether they are still alive or dead. So far, our team is composed of eight people in total, which includes Professor Fenwick and myself, although I do not think more people will join us since this team is still fairly new within our guild.”
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] Nerissa smiled and nodded at Clive’s response. Although she had slipped with his title due to the shock of seeing him alive after all this time, he still forgave her and that was something she had always liked about him back when he fought alongside Cid’s cause. This man was the embodiment of goodness in this world, as opposed to his treacherous mother, Duchess Anabella Rosfield, who would’ve gladly thrown him to the wolves if he didn’t have any use to her during the war between the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and Rosaria. Because of that, Clive never saw himself as more than a kinslayer or a friend killer, even after everyone had told him it hadn’t been his fault in the first place. It was just a cruel twist of fate that had been organized by their enemies. If only he knew that, perhaps he’d be able to forgive himself once and for all…
As the two ex-cursebreakers continued their conversation, Nerissa started to think of places the three of them could go in order to retrieve Mid’s special 'item' for whatever experience or fantastic project she had in mind when asking this small service to Clive earlier today.
“Let’s see… Coeurl’s are usually found in some of Torensten’s old ruins, though they reside more specifically in the Northeastern ruins. If Mid needs one as soon as possible, then going there would be the best option for us as they are only about an hour's walk from the Wyvern’s rest.” This would make things easier for them, knowing how accessible these ruins were compared to the southern ones who could only be entered by skillful warriors like herself without risking their by visiting those damned places.
“Well then, when shall we depart?” The Muireach lady asked Clive and Torgal, a hint of pure merriment showing in her eyes as they spoke of going on a new adventure. Just like the good old days, she thought to herself, smiling.
“We wouldn’t want to make Mid wait for her coeurl too long now, would we?” If there was one person who disliked delays more than anyone in this world, it was, for sure, Cid’s daughter. She’d always get discouraged whenever she didn’t get an item on time, having sent one of her serv- cough - friends go retrieve the object or material she needed to advance with her new 'top secret' project. Hopefully, they would be back before she started complaining about her item being late once the sun had set down in the horizon.
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] Nerissa chuckled at her remark. “Like everyone else here, Mid.” She replied with a grin, crossing her arms in the process as she reminisced of the past whenever she would go on a mission with her older brother and the Cursebreakers. “At least, you have the chance to travel around for the purpose of your job. It is not the same for everyone, you know?”
Lately, the young woman had been put in charge of most tasks at the Wyvern’s Rest since Celes’ needed to take care of a few issues regarding Yuna’s clinic in Provo. Needless to say, her days were now quite full and longer than before so much so that she had to put on hold a few of her duties with the Ruins Research team until her leader’s return. Right, I might need to work overtime again tonight if I want to be done with these documents by tomorrow morning.
“Huh? Did you say that you met Prince Dion in Provo?” She suddenly asked, her body slightly relaxing at the hearing of Bahamut’s name. “I’ve heard rumors that a royal figure showed up at Yuna's infirmary not too long ago, but I’d never thought it'd be this person everyone was referring to in their conversations.”
If there was one thing Nerissa learned from her time with Cid’s merry band, it was that any info, whether of small or huge importance, could prove to be useful in a context where you needed to find out someone’s identity quickly in advance of your enemy’s next move on the battlefield. No wonder Gav took great pleasure in doing this task above every other job he could do back at their hideaway.
“It seems like more people from our world are appearing in this one…” She commented, unsure as to what this strange phenomenon could be referred to in this new reality.
Nerissa shook her head in defeat, not wanting to delve more into this curious mystery, and instead drove her attention back to Mid’s conversation concerning her future engine’s name, which she had a bit of a trouble choosing among many ideas that she had in mind. “If I may, I believe that Defiant would be a perfect name for your new airship. It gives him a certain personality, one that reminds me a lot of your valiant father actually.”
The older woman nodded in response to Mid’s answer and smiled in return. “I'm glad these pens can be useful to you. I knew you’d be needing them sooner or later, knowing how invested you are in this airship project.”
[attr=class,punkisavelighttext] Hearing Hythlodaeus compliment her name in such a sweet-sounding way made the young woman chuckle in relief. His attempt to make her feel comfortable around him when they’d barely known each other just a couple of minutes ago seemed to work wonderfully. Nerissa no longer felt the need to escape this man’s presence like she initially planned to do. He didn’t seem like a threat to her nor did he look like someone who would hurt her like the enemies she faced back in Valisthea. Perhaps, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to fulfill his request and sing a song with him in this open market before she would return home for dinner time with Ammon.
“It seems to me that you will not give up until I accept your offer to sing with you near the status. Am I wrong to think so, sir?” She playfully asked before setting down her bag on the merchants’ table, for fear of losing it while she would fulfill Hythlodaeus’ wish near King Hremit’s statue. “May I leave this with you? I’ll only be gone for half an hour, though I’ll make sure to reimburse you with a fair amount of money when I come back to retrieve my stuff.” She said, praying that the older man would be kind enough to keep the Muireach woman’s bag safe and sound until her late return.
“No need to worry. As long as I have the chance to hear you sing one song, this’ll be enough of a repayment for me.” The apple vendor replied with a huge grin on his face. Manifestly, everyone wanted to hear sing a song alongside this talented musician in the town’s market today.
“T-Thank you very much, sir. I shall not forget your act of goodwill in the future.” She responded, although a bit confused by this sudden act of kindness. Were the people of Torensten always this friendly with me when I first came into this world? I can’t seem to remember anymore…
“Haha, alright, alright. Enough chit chatting, young lady. Shouldn’t you be up and singing with your friend already?”
“I… Yes. That’s what I should be doing, I think.”
Saying this with not-so-much-confidence, she turned around to speak with the musician, and immediately asked him what type of songs they would be presenting to the grand public within such a short period of time.
“Since we are about to perform together, aren’t there any songs that you would like to present in front of everyone? Perhaps a melody from your town, or even a verse that you’ve heard in Torensten? Anything would do the trick, as long as they are not too hard for me to sing.”
