[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] "Why are their reports so long? It feels like I'm reading an old manuscript rather than a mission report."
For the past three hours, the young Muireach woman has been revising her teammates' papers to verify the content of their research before she would send them to their leaders for approval about whether they should continue monitoring Torensten's southern ruins or not. It was a boring job to do, but Nerissa took great pleasure in proof-reading their reports since it gave her a broader image on the type of person she was working with and the goal they wished to accomplish while on a mission for the guild. Some seemed more invested in this job than the rest of their colleagues, while others preferred to follow this profession so they could return home early to their families. As for their youngest recruit, it was more of a hobby to pass time rather than a actual "work" since he had no place to return to, which Nerissa felt deeply.
"The majority of them really do enjoy their job, huh... That's quite surprising."
Despite saying this out-loud in an attempt to humour herself while working, Nerissa's heart clenched at the sudden thought of loving your job, remembering of a time where she used to like working for Cid and other bearers' cause at the Hideaway. Sure, the research unit team of the Dragonblades had been a lifesaver to her when she first arrived in Zephon, but the cursebreakers were so much more than just a "profession" in her eyes. To the warrior she once was, they were the ones who taught her how to read, how to write, how to fight, how to survive in battle, and even above all of that, they were the only ones who she could call "family" in this reality she lived in. If it were not for Goldie taking her and her brother in at Cid's hideaway, who knows how different her life would have been back in Valisthea. Perhaps she would have become a slave to the Iron Kingdom, a beggar on the street, or worse, a "courtesan" in one of Rosaria's famous brothels near her home city (though Edwyn would not have let that one happen under his watch). Either way, she was eternally grateful for what they had taught her over the years, and she'd do anything to repay their kindness if she ever had the chance of meeting them again in this world.
"Time flies by, and yet only I remain alive... I wish there was a way to bring them back from the dead, even if it means exchanging my life for theirs in the process... Ha, it'd seem too good to be true, even for our great saviour, Metia the red star... Oh well, at least I got Mid with me now."
Midadol Telamon, also called Mid, was one of Nerissa's few blessings in this world. Having arrived less than three weeks after her, the Muireach woman did everything she could to help out the teenage girl in her new life in Torensten, even going as far as to offer her a room in her small city house for whenever she needed to take a break from the Dragonblades. Of course, she let her make her own decisions since she was mature enough to know what was good for her and what was not, but if ever she needed help, she could always count on the older woman's aid.
"I wonder how her errand went in Provo. Has she come back at the guild yet?"
Before she could even answer that question, a light knock was heard at her door and she immediately put down her pen, curious as to who was behind the door of her office at this time of the afternoon.

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"
Engineering Prodigy
It had taken three weeks for Mid's theory to be proven correct. Three weeks and Nerissa had shown up. Truth be told, Mid didn't remember Nerissa particularly well. She had been eleven the last time she had seen her, and mostly remembered her as being one of those figures around the Hideaway that were like some distant Aunt and Uncle. She certainly remembered her as being a lot taller. However, what she did know was that she was one of the many, many people they had lost to Kupka that day. She'd been among the names they had mourned.
And now, here she was. Not a day older. Which only proved that just because you died back in Valisthea it didn't mean that you were dead in Zephron. Which continued her theory that she could find a way to bring the dead back. Joshua... Her Dad... She could bring them all back. All she had to do was the admitingly slightly big ask of learning how people were being drawn to Zephron and then master it and all of time and space.
So it was a work in progress. In the meantime, she was working on building a new ship. This time, an airship. She had worries about letting such technology loose back in Valisthea, but here in Zephron, airships were common place, so she had no such concerns about working on building one. In fact, she was determined to build the best airship Zephron had ever seen. One to make sure nobody else could use them to cause harm.
Which brought her back to Nerissa. She knocked on the door, and heard her call for her to come in. "Ay'up, Neri," she nodded as she walked in. "'Ow's life with the writin' treatin' you? Lots of thrillin' reports, I take it," she asked. She never understood quite how people did what Nerissa did and not die of boredom, but she decided not to dwell on it. "'Ere, need a favour if you got a mo," she said simply. "With all this writin' you do, figure you got a couple of spare pens 'round. Mind if I borrow some? Need some good, thin conductors, an' figure a metal pen should do the trick," she explained.
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa looked up and smiled upon seeing the Telamon girl enter her office. It hadn’t been a long time since they last saw each other, but it was always a pleasant surprise to see this young genius come to her workroom occasionally. “Mid! When did you get back? I thought you would be gone far longer than this.” She said, putting her pencil down while reorganizing the reports into one neat pile so that she could fully concentrate on their conversation without any distractions bothering her.
“Well, I guess it is treating me alright so far. Although, it is far less interesting than when I get to go on a field mission with my new team once in a while.” She bluntly answered before smiling. “How about you? How was your trip to Provo? Any fun things you did or saw while you were there? Perhaps a new invention you may be interested in building at your workshop, who knows.” If there was one thing Mid was always obsessed about, it was building new machines, especially ships. For a very long time, she has been passionate about constructing her very own boat, which would be faster, lighter and more resistant than any other machines around the continent. Her dream came true when she went on to build the Enterprise at the young age of sixteen years old. It was a marvel of technology that Cid would have been very proud to see if he was still alive at that time. Even though he wasn’t there to witness his daughter’s new creation, they knew he would continue rooting for her from the afterlife.
“Of course! I was almost done with my work anyway.” She said, getting up from her chair while brushing off some dust off her dress to look more presentable in front of Mid. “What do you need this time? Paper, ink, candles… I’ve got it all.” She jokingly said before nodding at her second answer. “Pens, it is. Let me check if I don’t have a box left of them in my library.”
She walked over to her bookrack and searched on each shelf for the wooden box that contained the pens Mid was looking for. “Ah, found them! I knew they were somewhere over here.” She told the girl, grabbing the box with her right hand and bringing it to her to see if they would do the job for her next task. “You can take them all. I’ve got tons of those pens around my office, so it won’t bother me if I lose a couple of them in the process.”

Narissa seemed surprised that Mid was back, and Mid blinked for a moment. She hadn't really realised that surprised anybody. She tended to come and go as she pleased when work needed to be done (or she needed an excuse to be far away), but had no idea anybody kept track of how long she was gone. She just shrugged to her point. "Got work to do, don't I?" she replied. "Can't keep a good engineer down. Or a bad one, fer tha' matter," she said casually, without considering it too much. She definitely fell into one of those categories or the other.
She asked how her trip was, and Mid gave a grin, hands on her hips. "Oh, y'know, nuthin' all that special. Jus' ran into Prince Dion bein' all alive an' well again," she said with a big smirk. "Usual stuff really, got some bits I needed, an' yeah, found resurrected royalty, so nuthin' much to write 'ome 'bout," she teased. She suspected that Narissa had already heard about Dion, but it didn't change the fact that Mid couldn't resist delivering the news.
"Nah, all me time's goin' on the Enterprise 2," she told her, in response to what she was working on. She paused, and gave a cock of her head. "Still workin' on the name. Enterprise II? Enterprise A? Enterprise B? Might go for sumthin' totally new, I in't decided yet," she said. "But this ship's gonna make the first Enterprise look like a little kiddie's play boat, got some real plans comin' along. Gonna have some teeth too. I in't no fan of causin' people 'arm, but the Dragonblades in't exactly well prepared for combat in the sky, if you excuse Caius's pet dragon, so I were figurin' given everyone else 'round these parts has airships armed ta the teeth, we'd need somethin' special," she explained. "Y'know, show 'em, Dragonblades might be small, but we're defiant," she exclaimed.
And then she paused. "Ohhh, Defiant. Good name that. Gonna write that one down," she said after a moment.
She took the box of pens, and rummaged around. "Ideal, those'll do nicely," she smiled, taking a handful. "In't much in the way o' small bits of metal 'round 'ere, leaves me at a bit of a loose end wit' some of the stuff I'm tryin' to do," she explained. "But the metal in these? They're perfect."
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa chuckled at her remark. “Like everyone else here, Mid.” She replied with a grin, crossing her arms in the process as she reminisced of the past whenever she would go on a mission with her older brother and the Cursebreakers. “At least, you have the chance to travel around for the purpose of your job. It is not the same for everyone, you know?”
Lately, the young woman had been put in charge of most tasks at the Wyvern’s Rest since Celes’ needed to take care of a few issues regarding Yuna’s clinic in Provo. Needless to say, her days were now quite full and longer than before so much so that she had to put on hold a few of her duties with the Ruins Research team until her leader’s return. Right, I might need to work overtime again tonight if I want to be done with these documents by tomorrow morning.
“Huh? Did you say that you met Prince Dion in Provo?” She suddenly asked, her body slightly relaxing at the hearing of Bahamut’s name. “I’ve heard rumors that a royal figure showed up at Yuna's infirmary not too long ago, but I’d never thought it'd be this person everyone was referring to in their conversations.”
If there was one thing Nerissa learned from her time with Cid’s merry band, it was that any info, whether of small or huge importance, could prove to be useful in a context where you needed to find out someone’s identity quickly in advance of your enemy’s next move on the battlefield. No wonder Gav took great pleasure in doing this task above every other job he could do back at their hideaway.
“It seems like more people from our world are appearing in this one…” She commented, unsure as to what this strange phenomenon could be referred to in this new reality.
Nerissa shook her head in defeat, not wanting to delve more into this curious mystery, and instead drove her attention back to Mid’s conversation concerning her future engine’s name, which she had a bit of a trouble choosing among many ideas that she had in mind. “If I may, I believe that Defiant would be a perfect name for your new airship. It gives him a certain personality, one that reminds me a lot of your valiant father actually.”
The older woman nodded in response to Mid’s answer and smiled in return. “I'm glad these pens can be useful to you. I knew you’d be needing them sooner or later, knowing how invested you are in this airship project.”

Mid cocked her head, her long ponytail flopping around behind her as Nerissa pointed out she did, at least, have the option of travel. "Never did think much of travellin', to be honest. Jus' a necessity, to get the bits I need. Much happier just buildin' away, I am. It's why I used to send Clive everywhere," she explained. She hoped she could soon get Clive doing that again too. Better him than her. "Plus fightin' weren't never really my thing," she added. "Rather leave that to the lot who 'ave more swords than brain cells," she smirked.
"Yep, that's right. Prince Dion," Mid answered, with playful fingerguns. "Same ol' stuffy Princey type. Made the ride back real fun though. I love his lil' face whenever I open me mouth," she joked. She supposed that it WAS pretty big news that a Prince from Valisethea was now on Zephron, but she didn't really see the need to play it up. It was seeming more and more likely that the majority of people from their reality were there.
"Yeah. So far, jus' the good ones though. Let's 'ope it stays that way. Given some of 'em were meant to be dead, I don't wanna see Benedikta or Kupka showin' up, yeah?" she said. It wasn't really like Mid to wish anybody dead, but wishing someone stay dead? That was quite a different thing entirely, and she was more than happy to embrace that belief.
"Yeah, 'e' would like Defiant, wouldn't 'e?" she replied, thoughtfully. "Right. Well, that's settled then. Defiant she will be," Mid nodded.
"Pens are the least of what I need. Tryin' to build an airship outta just what I can find in a whole new reality in't no easy task. 'course, it 'elps some that they already exist 'ere, but call me selfish, I kinda don't wanna copy those designs. This is me baby, an' I in't skippin' to the finish line now just 'cause someone else has done it first," Mid explained.
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Another chuckle escaped from the young woman’s mouth, Nerissa clearly enjoying this conversation that she had with the female engineer on the topic of sending other people on the field to accomplish her daily tasks while she was hiding in her lab to create a new revolutionizing invention that would help the transportation area. It was often a sphere that was left out from other thinkers minds due to the amount of work and research it would need in order to achieve a final product of their designed apparatus, but luckily for the Dragonblades, Mid wasn’t someone who imposed limits on her building talents, often going at great lengths to construct a ship (and now an airship!) for whatever reason she had found to convince herself into assembling one at her own workshop. “I can’t wait to see this new invention up in the sky, Mid. I might even give it a try if you assure me that it is safe enough for me to take a seat in this aircraft once it is operational and running in the ether.” After all, who would risk their lives again when they just got resuscitated into this new world for a second chance at life that some of them did not deserve, which included Benedikta, Kupka and a couple of others whom the two woman didn’t wish to ever see again in this life for all of the times they had made them suffer for the wrong reasons, whether it’d be on a physical or mental level in their case.
Her eyes had slightly darkened at the mention of these tyrants, herself remembering the destruction and blood they shed whenever they crossed the paths of innocent people that had only asked one single little thing: to live. “If I ever see one of them again in this twisted reality that we live in, I shall take their lives with my own hands… just like they unjustly did with our comrades not so long ago.” She replied, the faint memory of good ol’ Goldie singing around drunkenly around the campfire while her brother, Edwyn, made sure he and the rest of the Cursebreakers didn’t do anything dangerous amidst the euphoria of having won yet another battle against the king’s minions in Valisthea. “If the others were here, I’m sure they’d think the same way as I do…” She mumbled to herself before reporting her eyes towards Cid’s daughter. Just like he protected all of us from these monsters in the past, I, too, shall do the same and protect his dear child from whoever wishes to hurt her in this world. That is a promise.
“Anyhow, if ever you need anything else other than pens to help you finish your project at your workshop, do let me know. I might go visit some ancient ruins again in the northern part of Torensten starting next week. They might contain certain valuable materials in there so I’ll try bringing you a few of them back to your workshop to make your list of tasks smaller as time goes on.”

"'ey! Of course it'll be safe!" Mid protested when Nerissa asked if her upcoming airship design would work. "Me inventions always are! Well, usually. Well, sometimes. Well.... Look, it were a long time ago I nearly burned down the Hideaway an' I wish people would stop bringin' it up," Mid complained. Had mistakes been made back when she was young and first learning her trade? Yes! Were mistakes still made now that she was basically an adult? .... Well, still yes, but she'd rather people didn't dwell on those.
"Not that I don't support puttin' Hugo Kupka to the sword if you find 'im and 'e's alive again," Mid said in response to her claim as to what she would do if she found him. "But y'd remember 'e can turn into a giant the size of a mountain right? Last time Clive fought 'im, the stories I 'eard made it sound like it were the most ridiculous thing ever. Mountain sized giant, fallin' inside a volcano, beatin' the snot outta each other for like, six 'ours. I in't sayin' you couldn't take 'im, but maybe call in a lil' back-up first," Mid suggested. Kupka was a jerk, yes, but a dangerous jerk at that, and Mid was very cautious about him.
"Well, since you're offerin'..." Mid said when Nerissa commented on if she needed anything else. "I'm definitely gonna need some mythril. Can't 'ave a mythril engine without that. An' somethin' flexible, but sturdy enough, to make some tubing out of. I were thinkin' using Behemoth horns. They're hollow on the inside, yeah, so attach a couple, an' you have a strong, sturdy tube system..." she began, trying to think of all the things she'd need to deliver on the required build she had planned. If Nerissa was offering to help, she might as well use that!
