THE OUTLAW
He supposed it was a good thing that Clive had never been one to stay idle, because he couldn't if he wanted to for the most part, since Mid had set to sending him out for every little thing she could think of. He didn't mind it too much, he didn't have much else to do until his trial, and it was nice to get to see the sights and explore this new world a bit without the strain of his duties as Cid weighing on his shoulders. But he couldn't take five minutes before she found something new for him to do. Even if he wasn't fearful of sleeping because of the nightmares of Ultima that plagued him at every turn, he still wouldn't be able to rest for very long.
This time he had been sent to gather materials in a region that was frequently inhabited by coeurls. Which wasn't a problem for Clive, even without the full extent of his powers. But the kicker was that, as always, he had to go with an escort. Since he was still technically a criminal in house arrest awaiting trial, he and especially with Torgal in tow, could not leave the Wyvern's Rest without someone to keep them in line. Because they were definitely going to cause trouble and go rampage in the city or something if left unattended. So since Mid was busy after assigning him with the task, that meant he had to go ask somebody.
And the only one available, according to Tomoe (who was still very cross with him over trying to crack the crystal before) was a woman named Nerissa. Clive could almost swear the name sounded familiar, but he wasn't quite sure how. Regardless, he took the directions and sought to find this Nerissa around the Rest.
Whatever he was doing, Clive and Torgal would approach from behind. Clive anxiously rubbed his hands together as he tried to formulate a greeting.
"Ex... Cuse me, miss? Would you happen to be Nerissa?"
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] “Nice work today, everyone! I will see you guys in a few days for our next mission.” Nerissa cheerfully replied as she ordered her teammates to go back home so they could take a long-needed rest before their next expedition. She smiled and waved goodbye to her group until they reached the door of the Wyvern’s Rest, and once they were out of sight, she sighed in relief. “Thank the Founder, they’re finally gone…” She mumbled under her breath, glad that no one was here to hear her sentence.
If anyone could have seen the lady’s reaction just now towards her colleague’s departure, they would have mistaken it for one of pure annoyance, as if she hated the idea of going on missions with those people from the Ruins Research Unit. And yet, there was so much more to it than meets the eye. For instance, their trip to the eastern ruins of Torensten could have turned into an absolute fiasco if one of her partners’ hadn’t saved her from death’s grip minutes before she would have fallen into a puddle of water. Nerissa’s strange symptoms had become worse in the last few weeks to the point where she could barely perform her daily tasks at the ruins. Stranger than that was that her illness only appeared when she was near a large water source, making her breathing shallow and her senses dull to what was happening around her. She thought that by going to the eastern ruins, she would be safe from such “attacks” again, but was rapidly proved wrong after fainting at the sight of an old pond, her body almost falling into the water source before she was caught in time by one of the guys. If it were not for them, she probably wouldn’t have survived this unexpected accident. “I guess I’ll have to be more vigilant about my symptoms from now on. Perhaps I could only reduce my travels to that of the northeastern ruins and the southern ones since I know they do not possess a water source behind their crumbling walls. Besides, that is where I get most of Mid’s materials, so it would be advantageous for me to continue my expeditions there than in any other places around Torensten for a little while.” And once she’d had a bit more free time on her hands, she’d do some research about her illness and the possible medicines that could cure her before it was too late.
As she was about to take the stairs to return to her office, a male’s voice called her out and politely asked if she was the woman he was looking for. “Yes, I am Nerissa. How may I be of help to you, sir?” She asked, carefully turning around to see who had spoken her name in such an amiable tone.
Her eyes immediately fell on a tall, black-haired man, and it didn’t take her long enough to know who was the man she was in the presence of. “Your lord marquess? Is that really you…?” She inquired before smiling. Even though Mid told her that Clive had survived and was presently in the world of Zephon like the two of them, it was still a shock to see him standing in front of her, as if she’d never see the Rosfield man again in her lifetime. Her surprise even led her to call him by his title rather than his given name, despite having befriended him at the Hideaway a couple of years ago.
“It is… quite unexpected to see you here, my lord. Along with Torgal. Although, I’ve heard from Mid that you have been put under house arrest following a certain ‘incident’ that involved one of Zephon’s crystals.”

THE OUTLAW
"Well, you see Mid has been using me, amongst others, to gather materials for her. As I am sure you and the rest of this merry band knows. But I am not allowed to leave this place without an escort, and-" Clive had begun to try and explain before, once the woman turned around, he didn't have much room to speak further.
Lord Marquess. How long had it been since anyone had called him that name? He hadn't expected to hear it again, especially in a world where Rosaria didn't exist. "You are... One of the Cursebreakers, right? I feel like I've seen you around the Hideaway" Clive responded softly as he studied her face. He knew he had seen it before, but he interacted with so many day by day. Or, well... He had. Before he had died. Then it was just he, Torgal, and Mid. A second chance at life he had never expected to have, but in conditions that made him question whether he should have had this chance at all.
Torgal meanwhile, would lunge forward, hoping to jump on Nerissa and lick at her hands. He recognized the scent, and she had most likely given him treat bones like most of the Hideaway had at this point, so it was little wonder that the oversized dog would want to give her some measure of affection. Clive let out a long sigh as he tried to keep Torgal from going overboard, listening as this Nerissa would point out the blunder that the entire city knew about by now.
"Yes, yes, I know. I've only been reminded of it about twenty seven... Thousand times" Clive remarked at that. "Long story short -- I thought Ultima was in the crystal. Like how he was in all the other crystals. And I literally died killing Ultima the first time. If I hadn't actually destroyed Origin and the remaining Mothercrystals, I needed to act fast. And I did not have one of these handy "Welcome to Zephon" manuals under -after- I tried to destroy it."
He'd told this story too many times now, and he wasn't getting into the depths of his grief again. It was getting unhealthy.
"It is, however, good to see another familiar face. And an actually friendly one at that. Don't see many of those anymore."
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa wore an uneasy smile on her face, clearly embarrassed after having called Clive by his noble title instead of his actual name. It wasn’t on purpose that she did it in the first place. Instead, a sense of nostalgia had filled the young woman upon seeing him alive and well in front of her, the memories of a more peaceful time at Rosalith castle flooding into her mind like a river with no end. Back then, she had to refer to him as his ‘Lordship’ in place of his birth name, Clive Rosfield, but when he went on to join the Cursbreakers years later, thanks to a certain someone, she slowly started calling him by his given name. Of course, it took Nerissa a while to adapt to this new change, and many had made fun of her for not dropping the title down sooner around the Rosfield Man. Yet, everything fell into place once she began to feel more comfortable around him at the Hideaway.
“Forgive me, Clive. I didn’t mean to call you by your former title... I was taken aback when I saw you both appear in front of me as if it were a magic trick.” She said, apologizing again to Clive for this unfortunate mistake she had committed in his presence. “Old habits die hard, you know?”
Looking back at the black-haired man, Nerissa nodded in response to his question, validating his suspicions about her being a Cursbreaker from Cid’s cause. “Yes, that I am. As well as a loyal servant to the Rosfield family, but I dropped this role a long time ago.” She replied, not wanting to dwell too much on the past when he had a very important errand to do on Mid’s order.
“Clive. I know you did not do this with bad intentions in mind. Rather, you wanted to protect those you deeply cared for from a possible threat that may or may not have come from Ultima himself. This demon gave us a hard time in most aspects of our lives, including for eikons like you. If it were not for him, we wouldn’t have lost this many precious people around us. He was a monster, the worst kind of fiend that could possibly exist in our world. That is why I completely understand the way you reacted towards this crystal, and I know for a fact that I would’ve reacted the same as you did when you saw this giant crystal floating around the city.”
Nerissa wished she could have said more to reassure him about this whole ‘crystal’ situation. Still, seeing how tired he was of hearing about the same old story of his tiny ‘accident,’ she did not push further on this situation and instead concentrated her efforts on finding what was wrong with Torgal’s playful attitude.
“Hey! That tickles, boy.” She giggled, finding it amusing how the wolf licked her fingers to let her know that he wanted to get a treat for how well he behaved around her and his master. “Oh, Torgal… I don’t have any bones on me at the moment.” She replied, gently patting the top of his head in a sorry manner. “Next time I’m out of town, I’ll make sure to bring you back tons of them, okay?”
Torgal’s reaction made her smile, and she went on to pat him again on the head to thank him for his patience before going on to answer Clive’s new comment.
“Indeed, they were quite rare to find back when we fought for Cid’s cause. Though, I must assume it is not for my friendly face that you have come to seek me, am I right?”

THE OUTLAW
Clive was used to being mistakenly called by his former title by those of the Cursebroken. But it was a rare sight here in Zephon, for sure. However, he didn't judge her for it. Especially if she had once served House Rosfield as she claimed. If anything, he owed this Nerissa woman gratitude for her service to his family. However, something about her stirred something within him... It felt uncannily like how he felt around other Dominants. Especially the ones whose Eikons he had once taken into himself, like how he had felt with Dion previously. But it also stirred something else... Memories, perhaps. Memories that felt like he could just reach out and touch if he pushed enough, but still remained out of his reach no matter how hard he tried. Memories that would only be unlocked with DLC.
"Fret not. Title or not, it is good to see you" Clive did his best to assuage her concerns softly, still a touch sheepish about trying to comfort anyone at all. He was a fighter, not much of a nobleman nowadays. His diplomacy was a bit out of practice. The diplomatic one here, instead, was Nerissa. Who was probably the only person besides Torgal so far that had actually openly understood and empathized with what had happened. Mid, he knew, understood. But she would never tell him that. To hear that there were people that really did understand why he had done what he did, helped just a little. He was grateful for that.
"Thank you" he spoke quietly, unsure of what else to say on the matter. Torgal, meanwhile, let out a small whine when she claimed she didn't have any bones. Clive however, would scratch behind Torgal's ear as he fished out one of his own for the wolf to chew on. Which Torgal immediately took to the corner. Thank... Some matter of creator that definitely wasn't Ultima, that he'd brought some with him when he left for Origin.
More specifically, he had just forgotten to take them out of his pockets.
Nerissa then, essentially, inquired about business. "Right, I... Forgot" Clive responded sheepishly. What did Mid want again? "Mid wants bones from a specially large coeurl, for... Reasons that I do not understand. She said Nerissa could point me towards where they may be found, and provide an escort. As I am still not allowed to leave unguarded."
When was this trial happening? This was going to go for as long as Iggy and Gulag Gladdy were in the clink at this rate.
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa smiled and nodded at Clive’s response. Although she had slipped with his title due to the shock of seeing him alive after all this time, he still forgave her and that was something she had always liked about him back when he fought alongside Cid’s cause. This man was the embodiment of goodness in this world, as opposed to his treacherous mother, Duchess Anabella Rosfield, who would’ve gladly thrown him to the wolves if he didn’t have any use to her during the war between the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and Rosaria. Because of that, Clive never saw himself as more than a kinslayer or a friend killer, even after everyone had told him it hadn’t been his fault in the first place. It was just a cruel twist of fate that had been organized by their enemies. If only he knew that, perhaps he’d be able to forgive himself once and for all…
As the two ex-cursebreakers continued their conversation, Nerissa started to think of places the three of them could go in order to retrieve Mid’s special 'item' for whatever experience or fantastic project she had in mind when asking this small service to Clive earlier today.
“Let’s see… Coeurl’s are usually found in some of Torensten’s old ruins, though they reside more specifically in the Northeastern ruins. If Mid needs one as soon as possible, then going there would be the best option for us as they are only about an hour's walk from the Wyvern’s rest.” This would make things easier for them, knowing how accessible these ruins were compared to the southern ones who could only be entered by skillful warriors like herself without risking their by visiting those damned places.
“Well then, when shall we depart?” The Muireach lady asked Clive and Torgal, a hint of pure merriment showing in her eyes as they spoke of going on a new adventure. Just like the good old days, she thought to herself, smiling.
“We wouldn’t want to make Mid wait for her coeurl too long now, would we?” If there was one person who disliked delays more than anyone in this world, it was, for sure, Cid’s daughter. She’d always get discouraged whenever she didn’t get an item on time, having sent one of her serv- cough - friends go retrieve the object or material she needed to advance with her new 'top secret' project. Hopefully, they would be back before she started complaining about her item being late once the sun had set down in the horizon.

THE OUTLAW
Oh good, Nerissa knew where to find them. This really was a new world, wasn't it? Clive had explored practically every corner of the Twins at this point, but this place was new and now? He knew nothing. He didn't even have a network of resources to find things anymore. Now, he had found himself starting over from square one. No pressure, no responsibility... And yet, instead of being liberating, it just felt empty. Clive didn't care for the power, but to have all those people around him, fighting for the same thing. To have a true cause, a purpose... It was the only times in his life that he felt right about himself.
Everything felt so wrong. And he didn't know if it would ever be right again.
Nerissa would say "shall we depart?" which caught Clive off guard for a moment. So it would be Nerissa herself who would be escorting him? He had been so lost in thought that he had forgotten he was here to find an escort in the first place, alongside the directions. To go alongside Nerissa, a Cursebreaker and once someone whom had served Rosaria, would be a comfort that he had not expected to find in this world. So he would nod his head in kind.
"Whenever you are ready, Nerissa," Clive answered in kind. "You would be leading the way, as I am new to this world. And... Would know the fastest way, so as not to invoke Mid's wrath. We can't have that."
Definitely couldn't have that. Even Clive feared Mid getting angry, though he would never straight up admit that around her. Couldn't have her getting a bigger head than what was already far too large for such a tiny body. Should probably get that checked out.
