[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa wore an uneasy smile on her face, clearly embarrassed after having called Clive by his noble title instead of his actual name. It wasn’t on purpose that she did it in the first place. Instead, a sense of nostalgia had filled the young woman upon seeing him alive and well in front of her, the memories of a more peaceful time at Rosalith castle flooding into her mind like a river with no end. Back then, she had to refer to him as his ‘Lordship’ in place of his birth name, Clive Rosfield, but when he went on to join the Cursbreakers years later, thanks to a certain someone, she slowly started calling him by his given name. Of course, it took Nerissa a while to adapt to this new change, and many had made fun of her for not dropping the title down sooner around the Rosfield Man. Yet, everything fell into place once she began to feel more comfortable around him at the Hideaway.
“Forgive me, Clive. I didn’t mean to call you by your former title... I was taken aback when I saw you both appear in front of me as if it were a magic trick.” She said, apologizing again to Clive for this unfortunate mistake she had committed in his presence. “Old habits die hard, you know?”
Looking back at the black-haired man, Nerissa nodded in response to his question, validating his suspicions about her being a Cursbreaker from Cid’s cause. “Yes, that I am. As well as a loyal servant to the Rosfield family, but I dropped this role a long time ago.” She replied, not wanting to dwell too much on the past when he had a very important errand to do on Mid’s order.
“Clive. I know you did not do this with bad intentions in mind. Rather, you wanted to protect those you deeply cared for from a possible threat that may or may not have come from Ultima himself. This demon gave us a hard time in most aspects of our lives, including for eikons like you. If it were not for him, we wouldn’t have lost this many precious people around us. He was a monster, the worst kind of fiend that could possibly exist in our world. That is why I completely understand the way you reacted towards this crystal, and I know for a fact that I would’ve reacted the same as you did when you saw this giant crystal floating around the city.”
Nerissa wished she could have said more to reassure him about this whole ‘crystal’ situation. Still, seeing how tired he was of hearing about the same old story of his tiny ‘accident,’ she did not push further on this situation and instead concentrated her efforts on finding what was wrong with Torgal’s playful attitude.
“Hey! That tickles, boy.” She giggled, finding it amusing how the wolf licked her fingers to let her know that he wanted to get a treat for how well he behaved around her and his master. “Oh, Torgal… I don’t have any bones on me at the moment.” She replied, gently patting the top of his head in a sorry manner. “Next time I’m out of town, I’ll make sure to bring you back tons of them, okay?”
Torgal’s reaction made her smile, and she went on to pat him again on the head to thank him for his patience before going on to answer Clive’s new comment.
“Indeed, they were quite rare to find back when we fought for Cid’s cause. Though, I must assume it is not for my friendly face that you have come to seek me, am I right?”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa stopped reading the books on the shelf and immediately directed her attention to the voice that called her out. Her eyes crossed the figure of a charming man standing under the door as he waited for the woman to explain her unexpected presence in his private quarters. She laughed nervously at this weird situation and quickly bowed to the person she recognized as Caius Dragelion in an attempt to apologize for her audacious invasion of her leader’s dorm.
“I am terribly sorry for this intrusion, Lord Dragelion. Professor Fenwick had told me to deliver these reports to you concerning a monster increase in Torensten’s Western Temples, but I didn’t know where to go, so I asked Miss Tomoe for directions in hopes of finding your room more quickly. Although she told me this was your room, I was surprised to see a bit more furniture here than the rest of the guild’s bedrooms.” After all, Wyvern’s Rest was only known to have bedrooms rather than offices for their members to rest in between missions to regain their strength before going on with their everyday lives. It was a standard setting around this place, but Nerissa didn’t follow this rule like the rest of them. Instead, the young woman transformed her own little room into a cozy office that she regularly used as her workplace whenever she was not on a mission while living in an old house she bought a few weeks ago near the Dragonblades’ headquarters. It made the perfect separation between work and personal life, which helped the young woman adapt more rapidly to this new world without anybody else’s help.
Once Caius had forgiven her for this minor incident, Nerissa thanked him and carefully returned to her normal posture after bowing to him for the last few minutes. “Thank you, Lord Dragelion. I shall never forget your grand generosity towards a person like me.” She formally replied before smiling. “My name is Nerissa Muireach. I am a member of the Ruins Research Unit, which Professor Einar Fenwick currently leads in Wyvern’s Rest. Thanks to one of his disciples, I was able to join the Dragonblades and his team more than half a month ago. I mostly specialize in studying old ruins and magic artifacts, but I do love to go on other types of missions whenever that is possible. It seems I am more the traveller type than someone who loves working behind a desk.”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] “If I were you, I wouldn’t be pointing that thing at random people, sir.” A soft voice said, slightly chuckling at the Turks’ (highly expected) reaction. “Especially if that person came to help you for this rescue mission.” She added before stepping out from the bush, ultimately revealing herself to Tobias under the secretive air of the Headstone Forest. “I had been told that I would be joining a team to help in the research of a missing Provo-ite girl, yet no one was there at the meeting point, so I started to become worried that something had happened to you all. There were no traces of boots, no marks on the trees, and no signs of a fight in the area. Nothing that could’ve signalled me if one of you were still alive or dead. Fortunately enough, I saw your cigarette butts on the ground and decided to follow them in hopes of finding a survivor. I’m glad I followed my instincts on that one.”
Once her explanation was completed, Nerissa carefully brushed some dirt off of her dress in an attempt to look more acceptable in front of this stranger, having had no time to change clothes between this mission and the last one due to the emergency of finding out the whereabouts of the lost child, Sarah, before it was too late. The chances of finding her alive in this cursed forest were slim, but the Muireach lady couldn’t lose hope and prayed that the girl would be found safe and sound before dusk’s arrival later in the day.
“Seeing how you are alive and kicking means that the others are as well.” She replied calmly before smiling. “My name is Nerissa Muireach. I was sent on behalf of the Dragonblades to aid you in this disappearance case. I hope I’m not causing you too much trouble by accompanying you on this mission, sir.”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] “Nice work today, everyone! I will see you guys in a few days for our next mission.” Nerissa cheerfully replied as she ordered her teammates to go back home so they could take a long-needed rest before their next expedition. She smiled and waved goodbye to her group until they reached the door of the Wyvern’s Rest, and once they were out of sight, she sighed in relief. “Thank the Founder, they’re finally gone…” She mumbled under her breath, glad that no one was here to hear her sentence.
If anyone could have seen the lady’s reaction just now towards her colleague’s departure, they would have mistaken it for one of pure annoyance, as if she hated the idea of going on missions with those people from the Ruins Research Unit. And yet, there was so much more to it than meets the eye. For instance, their trip to the eastern ruins of Torensten could have turned into an absolute fiasco if one of her partners’ hadn’t saved her from death’s grip minutes before she would have fallen into a puddle of water. Nerissa’s strange symptoms had become worse in the last few weeks to the point where she could barely perform her daily tasks at the ruins. Stranger than that was that her illness only appeared when she was near a large water source, making her breathing shallow and her senses dull to what was happening around her. She thought that by going to the eastern ruins, she would be safe from such “attacks” again, but was rapidly proved wrong after fainting at the sight of an old pond, her body almost falling into the water source before she was caught in time by one of the guys. If it were not for them, she probably wouldn’t have survived this unexpected accident. “I guess I’ll have to be more vigilant about my symptoms from now on. Perhaps I could only reduce my travels to that of the northeastern ruins and the southern ones since I know they do not possess a water source behind their crumbling walls. Besides, that is where I get most of Mid’s materials, so it would be advantageous for me to continue my expeditions there than in any other places around Torensten for a little while.” And once she’d had a bit more free time on her hands, she’d do some research about her illness and the possible medicines that could cure her before it was too late.
As she was about to take the stairs to return to her office, a male’s voice called her out and politely asked if she was the woman he was looking for. “Yes, I am Nerissa. How may I be of help to you, sir?” She asked, carefully turning around to see who had spoken her name in such an amiable tone.
Her eyes immediately fell on a tall, black-haired man, and it didn’t take her long enough to know who was the man she was in the presence of. “Your lord marquess? Is that really you…?” She inquired before smiling. Even though Mid told her that Clive had survived and was presently in the world of Zephon like the two of them, it was still a shock to see him standing in front of her, as if she’d never see the Rosfield man again in her lifetime. Her surprise even led her to call him by his title rather than his given name, despite having befriended him at the Hideaway a couple of years ago.
“It is… quite unexpected to see you here, my lord. Along with Torgal. Although, I’ve heard from Mid that you have been put under house arrest following a certain ‘incident’ that involved one of Zephon’s crystals.”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa looked up and smiled upon seeing the Telamon girl enter her office. It hadn’t been a long time since they last saw each other, but it was always a pleasant surprise to see this young genius come to her workroom occasionally. “Mid! When did you get back? I thought you would be gone far longer than this.” She said, putting her pencil down while reorganizing the reports into one neat pile so that she could fully concentrate on their conversation without any distractions bothering her.
“Well, I guess it is treating me alright so far. Although, it is far less interesting than when I get to go on a field mission with my new team once in a while.” She bluntly answered before smiling. “How about you? How was your trip to Provo? Any fun things you did or saw while you were there? Perhaps a new invention you may be interested in building at your workshop, who knows.” If there was one thing Mid was always obsessed about, it was building new machines, especially ships. For a very long time, she has been passionate about constructing her very own boat, which would be faster, lighter and more resistant than any other machines around the continent. Her dream came true when she went on to build the Enterprise at the young age of sixteen years old. It was a marvel of technology that Cid would have been very proud to see if he was still alive at that time. Even though he wasn’t there to witness his daughter’s new creation, they knew he would continue rooting for her from the afterlife.
“Of course! I was almost done with my work anyway.” She said, getting up from her chair while brushing off some dust off her dress to look more presentable in front of Mid. “What do you need this time? Paper, ink, candles… I’ve got it all.” She jokingly said before nodding at her second answer. “Pens, it is. Let me check if I don’t have a box left of them in my library.”
She walked over to her bookrack and searched on each shelf for the wooden box that contained the pens Mid was looking for. “Ah, found them! I knew they were somewhere over here.” She told the girl, grabbing the box with her right hand and bringing it to her to see if they would do the job for her next task. “You can take them all. I’ve got tons of those pens around my office, so it won’t bother me if I lose a couple of them in the process.”

it's always fun to see her so happy to do a new project
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa did not see the man approach her until the very last second when he stood beside her in front of the merchant’s stand. She almost jumped out of her skin once she was aware of his presence but kept herself under control and offered the bard her usual smile to greet him properly.
“Greetings to you too, sir.” She said, carefully adjusting the bag over her shoulder while she listened attentively to what the bard had to say. Nerissa was still cautious of him as she didn’t know who he was nor what sort of request he would ask her in such a situation. She feared he’d ask for something out of her control, something that involved quieting the merchants present at the market so that his music could attract more people to his performance, which would have sounded crazy to the Muireach lady if that wasn’t the first time she’d heard this type of request coming from a musician like him.
“It is, um, a pleasure to meet you, Sir Hythlodaeus.” The Cursebreaker replied, slightly destabilized by the bard’s rapid presentation in front of the apple stand. “My name is Nerissa, young sir.” She added, softly smiling at him like any normal person would do in this context. “Please excuse me for this rude question that I’m about to ask you, but to what do I owe this unexpected greeting of yours in a crowded place like Torensten’s market?”
It didn’t take long for the Muireach woman to get her answers from Hythlodaeus that she was already questioning herself about the man’s good intentions. “Wait, slow down a little.” She calmly responded, trying to make sense of the words he blurted out from his mouth in less than three minutes. “If I understand correctly — and please correct me if I’m wrong — you wish for me to sing with you in front of a crowd filled with strangers only for… fun?” Did she hear it well? He wanted her to sing with him at the market with thousands of people surrounding them, only to make their shopping time more agreeable than without music.
“I… I don’t know my lord. It has been a while since I last sang in front of this many people. And this seems so sudden and quite out of the blue, if I may say. Also, even if I did agree to your request, I’d be too afraid to ruin your melody with my voice, sir.” Though she was tempted to say yes to the bard, she couldn’t get herself to say it as she was scared of what people would say once they heard her singing a tune unfamiliar to her. The only time she feely sang was when in the presence of her brother and the Cursebreakers at the Hideaway, chanting altogether their dreams of a better tomorrow for bearers and non-bearers alike into the dawn of the Valisthean night. “I truly apologize for my indecisiveness, sir Hythlodaeus.”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] It took her less than 15 minutes to walk to the heart of the town. Among the merchants, tables were filled with various spices, fruits, vegetables, pastries, meats, silks, jewelry and even books, making this place even more lively and joyful than the last time she came here with her longtime friend, Ammon. This bird could smell almost anything from a very far distance, whether it would be a mouse, a cow, insects, freshly baked pastries, fire, a friend, an enemy... Nothing was a secret to him, and Nerissa wished she could have had his nose to stop putting herself in dangerous situations. Though, who could blame her? She did grow up in the company of Cid's people and the Cursebreakers. For sure, she would not be the one to kindly stay behind when she could have helped dozens of branded bearers get a new chance at life, free from the marks they had been silenced with by the Sanbrecque army during the war. Back then, it was a dream she and her brother had hoped for many, many years, but they never got to accomplish it together since one of them died on a mission while the other went missing from the world of Valisthea, strangely teleported to a new dimension that bore the name of Zephon. Either way, she'd rather forget about it (for the time being)and concentrate her energy on her new job as a member of the Dragonblades. Walking from stand to stand, Nerissa could hear a sweet melody coming from her right side, played and voiced by a young musician whose talent was unmatched by the last singer she heard playing at this same market just about a week ago.
Unknowingly, she started humming the song on the tip of her lips while she picked apples on a merchant's table before shoving them in her bag and giving the coins to the seller, thanking him for the few fruits he gave her for free.
"Thank you, kind sir. I shall be back to your stand next week, as per usual." She nicely said, starting to hum once again the delightful melody of the performer.
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] “I guess this is it, huh? The place where I was meant to deliver those reports. I thought it’d be easier to find than Celes’ office… but it was not. Thank the Founder for not getting me lost in this maze-like place.”
For the past half hour, Nerissa had been searching for her leader’s office, more precisely Caius’, as she had important documents to deliver to him following her team’s investigation in the northeastern ruins. There had been an unexpected rise of activity by monsters of all sorts in the fallen temples, small beasts that could pose a problem if not quickly dealt with by someone from their guild. She ought to tell Celes about this the moment she found out about it, but the lady at the reception desk told her she wouldn’t be at the guild for the next few days and that it’d be best to leave those reports at their other leader’s office since he was to come back at the guild later this week. She didn’t know when nor at what time he was to be there, so she took on the task of delivering the papers to his workroom by herself before she went on with her day.
Of course, it was easier said than done since she didn’t know where exactly his office was, having never been there in the whole month she had lived in Torensten. Moreover, she never met face-to-face with this man, primarily because he had other businesses to deal with outside of the city. Because of that, Nerissa had no clue as to what her new leader resembled like, and she kept imagining all sorts of things concerning this legendary hero until she had to put a stop to it once she reached his office.
Like any normal person would have done, Nerissa knocked twice on the door and waited for the owner’s permission to enter the place, but as expected, no one answered her since no one was there at the moment. Due to the lack of an answer, the young woman let herself in and straightly went to his desk, where she carefully put down the reports in a neat pile, stepping one or two steps away from the bureau to verify she had done the right thing until her attention was drawn by the peculiar room she was in.
“Looks like nobody has been in there for a while. Even the air has become cold for a second.”
Indeed, the place felt quite empty, to say the least. Only a few pieces of furniture, an old-fashioned rug, some books, and a light were decorating Caius’ office, making it look like a lonely and dull workroom in the eyes of the Nerissa. Fortunately enough, someone kept the place tidy regularly, but it was sufficient enough for the young woman to feel slightly destabilized by this almost bare room.
“At least he has a few books to keep him company.” She said, walking over to the small library to get to know a bit more about this leader she had rarely heard of. “Let’s see… History of Torensten, The Biomes of Zephon, Three Bards’ Old Tales, Philosophy of a World Traveler, Draconology… Wait, why does he even have a book about Draconology? I thought dragons had disappeared from this world…”

[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] "Why are their reports so long? It feels like I'm reading an old manuscript rather than a mission report."
For the past three hours, the young Muireach woman has been revising her teammates' papers to verify the content of their research before she would send them to their leaders for approval about whether they should continue monitoring Torensten's southern ruins or not. It was a boring job to do, but Nerissa took great pleasure in proof-reading their reports since it gave her a broader image on the type of person she was working with and the goal they wished to accomplish while on a mission for the guild. Some seemed more invested in this job than the rest of their colleagues, while others preferred to follow this profession so they could return home early to their families. As for their youngest recruit, it was more of a hobby to pass time rather than a actual "work" since he had no place to return to, which Nerissa felt deeply.
"The majority of them really do enjoy their job, huh... That's quite surprising."
Despite saying this out-loud in an attempt to humour herself while working, Nerissa's heart clenched at the sudden thought of loving your job, remembering of a time where she used to like working for Cid and other bearers' cause at the Hideaway. Sure, the research unit team of the Dragonblades had been a lifesaver to her when she first arrived in Zephon, but the cursebreakers were so much more than just a "profession" in her eyes. To the warrior she once was, they were the ones who taught her how to read, how to write, how to fight, how to survive in battle, and even above all of that, they were the only ones who she could call "family" in this reality she lived in. If it were not for Goldie taking her and her brother in at Cid's hideaway, who knows how different her life would have been back in Valisthea. Perhaps she would have become a slave to the Iron Kingdom, a beggar on the street, or worse, a "courtesan" in one of Rosaria's famous brothels near her home city (though Edwyn would not have let that one happen under his watch). Either way, she was eternally grateful for what they had taught her over the years, and she'd do anything to repay their kindness if she ever had the chance of meeting them again in this world.
"Time flies by, and yet only I remain alive... I wish there was a way to bring them back from the dead, even if it means exchanging my life for theirs in the process... Ha, it'd seem too good to be true, even for our great saviour, Metia the red star... Oh well, at least I got Mid with me now."
Midadol Telamon, also called Mid, was one of Nerissa's few blessings in this world. Having arrived less than three weeks after her, the Muireach woman did everything she could to help out the teenage girl in her new life in Torensten, even going as far as to offer her a room in her small city house for whenever she needed to take a break from the Dragonblades. Of course, she let her make her own decisions since she was mature enough to know what was good for her and what was not, but if ever she needed help, she could always count on the older woman's aid.
"I wonder how her errand went in Provo. Has she come back at the guild yet?"
Before she could even answer that question, a light knock was heard at her door and she immediately put down her pen, curious as to who was behind the door of her office at this time of the afternoon.

[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Nerissa was walking around town hoping to clear her mind of whatever was bothering her, starting with her strange symptoms that appeared whenever she was near a body of water. These symptoms, as she hates to call it, appeared as suddenly as when she first arrived in the world of Zephon about a month ago. There were so many that the young woman could have easily created a list with them if she had wanted to, but refrained from doing so as it would have been a waste of time on her part. After all, she had other vital things to do in this world like monitor the ruins around Torensten, fight dangerous monsters, and write daily reports to her leaders so as to keep them updated on their new discoveries around their land. To her, the work she was doing for the Dragonblades was far more important than monitoring her own condition day and night like a worried mother would do for her sick child.
Thanks to that mentality of hers, Nerissa was able to keep her condition under wraps while making everyone believe that she was fine and ready to get back to work at any time. Of course, there was a time when she was caught fainting in her office by one of the Dragonblades' leader, but she made sure not to repeat that mistake again by taking daily medicine so as to diminish her symptoms whenever she was around people. It helped sometimes, but today was one of those days where the cure didn't work and she had to walk around town to relieve her strange headache before returning to work at her guild.
As she walked through the market, a sudden noise pricked her ear and the young woman from Muireach immediately turned her head to the right, wanting to know where this lovely sound was coming from and who among the townspeople was making it. It sounded familiar, but so distant in her memory that she couldn't remember exactly where she had first heard it since arriving in this world. Perhaps it was a song sung by drunk clients ar the town tavern or by a farmer who went out early in the morning to work on his land. Regardless, she didn't know why she knew this melody and instead decided to follow the music in search of a possible answer to this enchanting sound.
Her steps finally led her to the statue of Lord Hremit near which two young people were singing to the delight of passers-by. Amidst all this, Nerissa couldn't take her eyes off them, fascinated by the melody that came from their harp and flute, like a bittersweet reunion between old friends and new foes in an unknown world.
