[attr=class, bulk] Tifa pointed out that it was easy to teach someone to do something that you enjoyed doing, and Noctis privately agreed. He hadn’t really given Tifa tips so much as rambled to her about his own techniques for fishing, so it hadn’t exactly been difficult to get her in the swing of things. It helped that she was a quick learner.
“That must be hard,” Noctis said with a frown when Tifa continued to talk about how Sephiroth didn’t have any memories. “I mean, sure, you can’t hold him accountable for what he did if he doesn’t remember. But you all remember. Doesn’t seem fair.” Again, he had to consider what he would do with an amnesiac Ardyn. He liked to think that he wouldn’t react as explosively as Cloud had, but he honestly didn’t know. The immortal daemon had tried to systematically take everything away from him. Some things were just impossible to forgive, let alone forget.
Either way, Tifa said she’d try to talk some sense into Cloud, which was probably good for everyone. Keeping the peace and all. Noctis didn’t envy her with that job though. “Good luck. Hopefully it’s just easy to keep the two separated. And I really hope this Sephiroth guy never gets his memories back. That would be dicey all over again.” Not that Tifa needed something else to worry about, but Noct could be a bit like Prompto sometimes when he got in a thoughtful mood. Not much of a filter.
Tifa met his fishing challenge by casting her line back into the water, and Noctis had to laugh as he got ready to do the same. He was glad to have the competition, and more than happy to fish into the night. “Hey. Thanks for coming out with me. It was good to meet a fellow off-worlder,” he said as he dropped his own line into the lake. Since it was getting dark, he also clicked on the flashlight he kept in his jacket. They were going to need it.

[attr=class, bulk] Cindy played along and joked that she was the only mechanic in these parts, which wasn’t too surprising since Provo was just a bunch of merchants and farmers from what Noctis had seen. Not too many cars inside of the city, but definitely more than in Torensten at least.
“That just means you can get the entire market flocking to you,” he said with a slight grin. “There’s way more cars closer to Sonora, but I think you made the right choice. Reminds me a bit too much of the empire up there.” It even had the snow. Really, the resemblance to Niflheim was kind of uncanny now that he thought about it.
Cindy commented that she didn’t think she’d see him so soon, and Noctis nodded a bit more seriously. Time to get down to business. He could respect that. “Caius pointed me your way. It sounds like you met him too?” He was a good guy, even aside from being a kingsglaive. He was turning out to be one of the most reliable people that Noctis had met so far on Zephon. No wonder his older self had respected him.
“I haven’t really found somewhere here to settle down yet,” he admitted when Cindy asked him how he was holding up. “I’ve mostly just been running around trying to get the gang back together. Caius said I might have some luck finding the other three up in Sonora.” He didn’t quite want to get into the whole prison situation with her yet. Cindy wasn’t like Iris where she would insist on coming along, but he also just honestly didn’t know how to tell her that Ignis and Gladio were locked up. Maybe if it came up naturally as they talked more.
“What about you? You seem like you’re doing pretty well for yourself,” he said as he glanced around her garage. “I definitely wasn’t expecting to find you here though. Seems like we’re all turning up in this world. Makes you wonder.”

[attr=class, bulk] “Stellar pun,” Noctis complimented Prompto with a slight groan when he said that his first time accidentally warping must have been a trip. And it was. A painful, nauseous one at that, so he wasn’t going to elaborate while trapped on a roof. Maybe once they’d actually had a chance to catch up.
Prompto seemed pretty stunned that he’d met Caius already, which was valid considering how wild the blond mercenary’s story had been. “Yeah, I know. It was weird to meet someone who knows us in the future,” he admitted while rubbing the back of his neck. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, it was good to hear that we make it home and rebuild, but…it was still a lot.” Hearing about a decade of darkness and the depths of Ardyn’s depravity hadn’t exactly been easy. But that was a topic that Noctis wasn’t quite ready for even with Prompto. First, they had to save Ignis and Gladio. Then they could worry about Ardyn. He just had to take things one step at a time.
Apparently Prompto knew some places around Sonora, but none that would be good to lay low in, so Tifa’s bar it was. Predictably, his best friend wanted to know if she was cute, and as always Noctis couldn’t resist misunderstanding him. “Sure. You should have seen how she reeled that fish in. It was beautiful.” All joking aside, Tifa was very pretty and probably out of both of their leagues. Noctis just hoped that Prompto would react better in her presence than he did in Cindy’s. It was a low bar, but he didn’t always clear it.
“For real though, I met her in Provo when she was having a hard time, so I took her fishing to get her mind off it. She told me all about her bar up here in Sonora, so I think I can find it.” Hopefully. It was better to be confident around his best friend though. Prompto did enough worrying for the both of them.
He mentioned wanting to catch up once they got to the bar, and Noctis nodded seriously. “Yeah, I definitely want to hear what you’ve been up to on Zephon. And uh…when you come from? Because that’s a thing here apparently that people can come from different points?” He didn’t really understand it, but both Caius and Alex had confirmed it. Not to mention that they knew different versions of him—Caius and known him as a 30 year old king and Alex claimed that the astrals had sent him to the warrior of light’s world for a while. It was a lot to absorb.
“Okay. We just have to blend in with the crowd, right?” A bit regretfully, Noctis took off his blue coat and vest and shoved them back into the glaive. That outfit was compromised after all. He pulled out his usual black jacket and pulled it on instead, shivering a bit with the shorter sleeves. “Yeah, it is way too cold.” With that, he moved over to the back of the building and peered down over the side, trying to judge if it was safe to drop down.

[attr=class, bulk] Noctis and Prompto had been laying low in Sonora ever since the prince had made his slightly dramatic entrance to the city. They had a lot to catch up on even aside from Ignis and Gladio, but all the downtime was starting to make Noctis twitchy. It was finally go-time though. The pair had sent out letters to the people they thought might be agreeable to help them with a prison break, namely Caius and Alex.
Caius had been a no-brainer, given that he was a former kingsglaive they had both already met. He had actually been the one to send Prompto to Cissnei in the first place to get information on the prison, so he was already up to speed on the entire situation. The blond mercenary would be a really good resource to have with his Lucian magic too, though Noctis wouldn’t blame him if he wanted to take a more backseat role. He seemed to have built up a nice life in Zephon with several branches of the Dragonblades cropping up in different towns. The prince didn’t think that they had a Sonora branch yet, but Caius probably still wouldn’t want any fallout to hit the rest of the guild members. Noct respected him for looking out for his people that much. It was what a leader should do.
On the other hand, he respected Alex for being down for a prison break any day of the week. Prompto hadn’t exactly been thrilled to involve the other guild leader, but Noctis had doubled down on his choice. Alex was eccentric and pretty much the polar opposite of Caius, but it was good to have some variety on a team. Plus if there was a single person that he’d met on Zephon so far that he’d choose to have around in a crisis, it would be Alex. The guy was incredibly powerful and could think on his feet. Except for the time that he had driven both of them off a cliff, but Noctis had promised not to talk about that.
Anyway, it would be fine. He was definitely not letting Alex be the getaway driver though.
“Back again,” he joked to Prompto as they reached the bar. They had come here before just to have a safe space when Noctis had first arrived, but Tifa hadn’t been working that day. This time as he pushed the door open and shook out the sleet from his hair though, it wasn’t hard to spot the tall brunette cleaning a glass behind the bar. Well-timed. The establishment was also fairly deserted at this hour, which was what Noctis had been hoping for. Even better, there were already two familiar blonds seated at the bar.
“And I was worried you two would have trouble finding the place. Looks like we’re the late ones though,” he greeted them as he came up to the counter and claimed the stool next to Alex before smiling slightly at Tifa. “Good to see you again, Tifa. Sorry if this is out of the blue…” Hopefully it wasn’t too presumptuous to plan a prison break in front of her, but after she’d told him that she used to host eco-terrorists in her old bar’s basement, he didn’t think this would be too out of line to her.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Caius actually considered his messenger theory before admitting that the blue dragon looked nothing like his supposed mother. “You hear that, Vordun?” Noctis said, even though the dragon was watching the fish sizzle over the fire and almost certainly did not hear that. “We’re onto you. Better tell us which astral you report to.” While the prince was obviously joking, it really wouldn’t surprise him if Bahamut had a messenger somewhere that was a dragon. He was called the Draconian after all, though Noctis had yet to meet the god in person. He thought he might when he had been sucked into the crystal but instead he had ended up…here.
It was a definite upgrade, even if Noctis himself didn’t know just how much.
The prince nodded along with Caius’ own musings on what could be going on with the dragon. “I’ve never tried to pass on Lucian magic to an animal, but I wouldn’t think the process would be much different. So unless he starts storing stuff away in the glaive or drops Blizzara, the warping probably comes from you.” Noctis then had to pause to consider the ramifications of a dragon with magic. “Good thing too. That would be terrifying. I think I’ll stick to humans.”
He was apparently a full decade older than Caius in his timeline, which was definitely weird when he compared the two now. “I’m only twenty,” he admitted, eyeing Caius’ beard and self-consciously rubbing his own jawline. He’d never really had much in the way of facial hair yet. Hopefully he was just a late bloomer. “Sorry, that’s got to be weird for you. How old are you now?” He did however perk up a little when Caius mentioned his limited experience with technology and brought up Hammerhead. “Does Cindy still work there in ten years? She’s the mechanic who always serviced the Regalia for us.” Noctis didn’t ask about Cid. Somehow he didn’t like the elderly man’s odds after a full extra decade.
Keeping up with that somber thought, the glaive requested that if they did end up meeting in the future that he try to keep him from dying this time. “Absolutely. At least I’ll know to keep an eye out,” he said with a frown at the reminder that Caius had died for him. Or at least nearly died, since he was alive and well on Zephon. Maybe coming here had been the only thing that had saved his life. That was a sobering thought. “Seems like you’ve done really well for yourself here at least.”
The fish that Caius was frying up was looking good, so as they sat down to eat, Noctis casually pulled some plates and silverware out of nowhere. It did make him consider the blond mercenary’s earlier question over how ingredients stayed fresh in the glaive though. “I always assumed that the storage space is sort of outside of time. So when you pull something out, it’s the exact same as when you last left it, if that makes sense.” Either way, he was as eager to dig into the fish as Vordun was.

[attr=class, bulk] Noctis had been itching to get to Sonora to try to find Prompto, but Caius telling him that a certain mechanic was also in Zephon had stopped him in his tracks. He hadn’t seen Cindy since they had all boarded the boat to Altissia. The prince knew that she could take care of herself, but she had still been one of the people that he’d worried about while the nights were getting longer and longer. That wasn’t an issue anymore in Zephon, but he still wanted to go see her. Since Noctis was going north towards Sonora anyway, he figured he’d make a little pit-stop in Provo after Caius gave him the address.
He really wasn’t looking forward to telling her about the Regalia though. It hurt to even think about the wreckage of his dad’s car that he’d had to leave behind.
The address ended up being a little out of the way, but Noctis was happy to smell a combination of paint and motor oil as he came up the walkway towards the house. It seemed like Cindy was still able to do what she loved even if they’d all been forced into a new life. He could see a garage and a small collection of cars out back, which seemed like a more promising place to start than the house. She had never seemed to like the indoors much.
As Noctis came around the corner, he slowed to a stop at the sight of a blonde woman bent over the hood of a car. She was carefully applying a layer of paint, so the vehicle must have been nearly ready to go if she was on that stage. Noctis couldn’t help the slight grin that rose to his face as he watched her work. It felt almost like being back at Hammerhead. Minus the desolate landscape.
“You know,” Noctis broke the silence, hoping that he wouldn’t startle Cindy too bad. “I was just thinking that I should invest in a car as long as we’re here.” Leaning against the door of the garage, he gave Prompto’s grease monkey goddess a smile. “Know where I could find a good mechanic around here?”

[attr=class, bulk] Prompto didn’t seem to be too happy about the whole warping experience, but if he was talking then he’d be okay. His best friend tended to ramble when he was nervous, but it was only when he went quiet that you really had to worry about him. Either way, Noctis clapped him on the shoulder for moral support. “Try not to puke over the ledge,” he offered as sage advice before peeking down at the crowd from behind the pizzeria sign. Otherwise he’d just feel bad for whoever was standing directly below them.
The guards didn’t seem to really know what to make of them just disappearing like that, but that was good for them. As long as they didn’t draw too much attention, they might be able to just slip away across the rooftops. “Think we’re good as long as we stay low,” he whispered back to Prompto even though they were high up enough that they probably didn’t need to be whispering. “And yeah, that’s pretty much warping. If it helps, I’m pretty sure I did throw up the first time I accidentally did that when I was a kid.” He had also nearly broken his nose once by smacking face-first into a wall before he had gotten the hang of it. He was amazed Gladio had ever let him live that one down.
Prompto asked about a plan and also what he’d done to attract the police, so Noctis rubbed the back of his neck self-consciously. “I might have broken into the city by warping over the wall,” he admitted. “I don’t have any kind of papers yet—I got to Zephon super recently. But I had to come to Sonora. I met Caius, and he told me you were here. Plus that Specs and Gladio are in some kind of prison? So the wall wasn’t about to keep me out.”
A plan though. A plan would be good. They couldn’t exactly save their friends if they were in trouble themselves. “Know anywhere we can lay low for a bit and catch up?” Prompto had been in the city for way longer than him after all, so maybe he’d have a better idea than Noctis had of where to go now. “I know a girl named Tifa who should have a bar around here, so that wouldn’t be the worst.”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Alex seemed almost relieved when Noctis “confirmed” his battle harem theory, like Prompto’s reactions all somehow made sense now. The prince wasn’t sure if he wanted to follow that train of thought too closely to its logical conclusion, so instead he buried that and focused more on what Alex was saying. Noctis had apparently told him about Luna before, and that reminder made him wince a little and rub the back of his neck. “...Yeah, the engagement was political. We were childhood friends though.”
Were. The past tense was ugly. He’d never really had the time to come to terms with Luna’s death when they’d just had to keep going. It had been so quick and so pointless on Ardyn’s end. He’d just wanted to hurt Noctis that much more, and the Oracle had suffered for it. He’d never be able to fix that.
Since Alex was grabbing another beer anyway, Noctis took the chance to bury his sorrows in a long drink. “Yeah, being able to warp has its advantages. I see why I’d give it to you.” Honestly if Alex already knew how to use Lucian magic, then he wouldn’t mind loaning the power to him again sometime. Offering that now might come off a bit too much like he was hitting on the guy though. Maybe he’d wait on that conversation until Alex realized that Noctis did not in fact have a battle harem.
Alex gave him such a genuine thank you for explaining that it honestly made Noctis feel bad. He briefly thought about correcting him on the joke, but the thought of the blond man approaching Gladio with that misunderstanding was just too good of an opportunity to pass up. The prince had never claimed to be mature yet.
The blond mercenary seemed like he had to seriously consider Noct’s question about how many times he had saved the world. He then had to count on his fingers, and Noctis felt his expression get more and more concerned as the count went up. Alex’s verbal explanations really didn’t help either.
“Dude, I mean this in the nicest way possible. What the hell is going on in your world? Like, I am genuinely concerned for your safety if we find a way home.” He had apparently been there before, but he didn’t really remember it, so all he had to go off of were Alex’s stories. And as far as Noctis was concerned, it sounded like about a quarter of the population were immortals trying to commit genocide. Sometimes via birds apparently.
Alex also apparently really hated someone named Emet-Selch, and Noctis had to laugh into his beer a little at the advice to just kill him immediately with no questions asked. “...What if I do that and it was just a random guy named Emet-Selch? You’re not gonna give me anything else?”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Tifa said her fishing victory must have been because she had a pretty good teacher, which made Noctis laugh under his breath. “I don’t know about that. I’ve never really taught anyone to fish before. This was fun though.” Prompto and the guys had never really liked fishing with him, but they had no issue with tagging along. Or backseat fishing. Honestly, they seemed to have more fun with telling Noct what he was doing wrong than with going fishing themselves. He felt the same way about cooking and photography though, so he couldn’t really blame them.
Tifa finally confessed that the damage to the Rising Stones headquarters had been caused by two of the people that she had been talking about all night, and Noctis tried not to choke at the revelation. “Seriously? Guess I don’t have to ask why you were wandering the street looking down then.” He would too if one of his friends had demolished an entire city block. “It’s okay though. If that guy did as much to your world as it sounds like, then I get why Cloud did what he did.” Noctis rubbed the back of his neck as he had to wonder what he’d do if Ardyn turned up with no memories. Somehow he still thought the guy would have the personality of a thousand slimy daemons in a trench coat, but you never knew.
“Just uh. Maybe don’t mention that to Alex if you ever meet him. He owns the guild, so he might take that a little harder.” His friend didn’t seem like the type to hold grudges at least. He was just unpredictable, though Noctis wouldn’t blame him for being mad. He must have worked hard to get his own place after being dropped in a new world like Zephon. Noct himself would have been pretty toast if he hadn't run into Alex first.
Tifa joked that she didn’t mind trying her hand at fishing again unless he was afraid he’d lose a second time, and that got a genuine laugh out of Noctis. “How am I supposed to turn down a challenge like that?” With a flourish, he summoned his fishing pole back to his hand in a flash of blue light. “Sounds like I need to defend my title.”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Caius mentioned that he wanted to run something by him about Vordun. Noctis doubted that he knew more than Caius did about dragons, but he watched the demonstration anyway, and it became pretty apparent why the kingsglaive wanted his opinion. Vordun could warp.
The prince blinked slowly, trying to take in what he’d just seen as the blue dragon kicked up a pile of sand on his return landing. “Yeah, that’s…new.” He’d honestly never considered whether or not he could pass his powers on to animals, but there was probably at least one of his ancestors who had been crazy enough to try it. This didn’t seem to be quite the same thing though since Noctis hadn’t given anything to Vordun directly. If anything, Caius had passed it on himself, and there wasn’t a ton of precedent for a kingsglaive passing on those powers directly. At least as far as Noctis knew.
“You sure he’s not just a messenger?” He was mostly joking, but then again Umbra had just seemed like a dog most of the time. A really intelligent dog with powers that he shouldn’t have had. Vordun did kind of fit the bill.
“Other than that theory…honestly, I’m not sure how we still have our magic here at all,” Noctis admitted, rubbing the back of his head with one gloved hand. “You guys should be pulling it from me, and I should be getting it from the crystal. But the crystal doesn’t exist here. Not to mention that you’ve been here way longer than I have, right? So if you still had your magic without me, then maybe it all works differently here. Maybe it’s your own now, and you subconsciously shared it with Vordun or something. Just a thought.”
Somehow he didn’t think even the archives in the basement of the Citadel would help him out with this dragon mystery. A theory was really the best that he had to go off right now.
Caius gave him a better idea of what Eos had been like when it was left to Ardyn’s mercy, and Noctis let out a slow breath at the mental image of a world of darkness. “Right. Phones definitely wouldn’t be a top priority when food’s scarce. I still can’t believe you all had to spend ten years without the sun…” He wasn’t sure how humanity had survived at all under those conditions, but people were resourceful. It gave him even more motivation to try to find a way home though. He didn’t want to leave them for a full decade, even if that’s what Caius had predicted.
The blond man was probably being modest about his own cooking since he said the meal might not be fit for a prince, so Noctis waved that off with a laugh. “Trust me, I’ve had a lot of nights with just cup noodles or canned food too. Grilled fish sounds pretty great to me.” Apparently one of his guild members had been giving Caius cooking lessons, and Noctis snorted a little under his breath since it was the same girl who had run off with Alex’s dog. The poor guy just couldn’t catch a break.
“He really is a good guy. Just…kind of a disaster.” Which was maybe saying something coming from Noctis, but that was besides the point. “I’ll let him know to come and hash out the dog situation directly with her though, and that you’ve got nothing to do with it.” It was honestly kind of a funny situation, but Caius didn’t seem to think so, so Noctis did his best to keep a straight face and change the subject.
He failed at not cracking a smile when the blond mercenary mentioned he could see why Insomnia needed both the crownsguard and the kingsglaive. “In my defense, I don’t have any kingsglaive yet, so the crownsguard have had their hands full with me.” The huge fish was starting to smell good, and the prince leaned forward a bit towards the fire. “I guess that makes you the first. Until I meet a younger version of you in ten years.” Time travel certainly was messy.
