II. PERSONA
Noctis can be a hard person to get to know, and most people only ever see the aloof front that he puts on in public. He can come across as a little withdrawn and sullen, but that's generally because he's not interested in talking to people who only like him because he's a prince. If a relationship isn't real, then he just doesn't see the point. There are a handful of people that he's willing to open up to, and these close friends know the truth about him: Noctis Lucis Caelum is strange and snarky.
Noctis can fall asleep at any moment even in the middle of a task. He adores cats and will drag his friends off on a grand adventure to help a hungry cat in need. He's an extremely picky eater and will bemoan having vegetables or beans on his plate like they've personally offended him. However, his greatest passion in life is fishing. He likes nothing more than upgrading his fishing pole and conquering the largest fish in the area. He could fish for hours if he was allowed, and at this point he knows exactly where to find most varieties of Lucian fish if he was asked. Most people don't ask.
After growing up as a prince, Noctis has a bit of an ego. He's prone to rushing into things recklessly and being too confident in his own abilities, but at the same time he has zero issues with being treated like a commoner. He'll get his hands dirty with various odd jobs, earn his own money, and pump his own gas while thinking nothing of it. If anything, Noctis is never happier than at those moments where he can be like anyone else.

III. HISTORY
Noctis was born as the prince of Lucis to King Regis and Queen Aulea. Unfortunately Aulea died when Noctis was still a baby, and Regis was so busy with running a country that Noctis spent a lot of his childhood around retainers and caretakers instead of his parents. This led him to be a bit lonely growing up and he gained the idea from a young age that being a king meant sacrificing everything else.
Still, Noctis was a fairly cheerful and plucky kid until two big events changed his life. The first was that the old kings revealed to Regis that Noctis was the chosen king of light from the old prophecy. Regis was horrified to learn that his son would have to sacrifice himself to save the world, and he started giving Noctis more freedom to do the things he wanted instead of forcing him into a strict education that was fairly standard for Lucian royalty. He even let him enroll in a public school instead of having him be privately tutored.
It was around this time that Regis introduced Noctis to Ignis. Ignis was a few years older than him and was training to become one of Noct's retainers in the future. The two immediately hit it off, and from the start their relationship usually involved Noctis dragging them both into trouble. Noct learned very quickly that Iggy was one of the most dependable people he knew and that he could always be counted upon to help him out of whatever mess he currently found himself in.
The second event that changed his life was that Noctis was attacked by a marlith. He was dragged from the car at night, and he sustained a severe wound across his entire back while every servant who was with him was killed. Noctis probably wouldn't have survived either, but Regis arrived at the last second and drove the daemon off. It was thought that Noctis' injuries were so severe that he may not be able to walk again, so he was sent to Tenebrae in order to recover with the Oracle.
While in Tenebrae, Noctis became good friends with its princess, Lunafreya. She was the first person to really explain the crystal's role to him, and he was devastated when the Niflheim empire attacked Tenebrae and Luna elected to stay behind to protect her brother Ravus. Still, the two continued to stay in contact by writing back and forth in a notebook that the messenger dog Umbra carried between them.
While he had recovered from the Marlith attack, Noctis became more somber after Tenebrae's invasion, and he started distancing himself from the other kids at school. None of them ever approached him anyway. There was an overweight blond kid in his class who always looked like he wanted to, but he seemed afraid to do anything other than stare at him from a distance. Oh well. He was used to being stared at.
When Noctis was around ten, he met the boy that was going to become his future shield. Initially, he and Gladiolus didn't get along at all. Gladio seemed to think that he was a spoiled brat, and Noct thought that Gladio was overbearing and pushy. Eventually they reconciled after Noctis rescued Gladio's sister Iris when she got lost, and he took all the blame for the two being alone outside. He and Gladio became friends after that, though Noctis continued to complain about early morning training and Gladio continued to push him to do better.
When Noctis entered high school, a much-changed Prompto approached him in front of the school and introduced himself. Noctis resisted pointing out that they'd been in the same class since grade school, and the two became instant best friends. Prompto gave him the sense of normalcy that he'd been craving, and they would spend hours at the arcade or just laying around Prompto's house talking. Prompto's parents were never home anyway.
His friendship with Prompto gave Noctis the confidence to realize that what he wanted before he became king was the chance to live a normal life. He pushed for his own apartment in the city, and after several heated arguments about security, he finally moved out of the palace and had his own place. He even got a part-time job at a sushi restaurant to earn his own spending money. Noctis was very convinced of his own independence at this point, ignoring the fact that Ignis came by a few times a week to cook and clean.
Shortly after Noctis turned 20, the war with Niflheim worsened and the newly instated chancellor arrived to offer terms of peace. There was a catch, of course. Noctis and Luna were to be wed. It wasn't that Noctis necessarily minded marrying Luna--he'd always known that his marriage would be political and he was relieved that the bride was someone he was already friends with. But he hated the idea of being a pawn to Niflheim, and he didn't understand the choices that Regis was making. Under the peace treaty, Lucis had to surrender all lands except Insomnia, but his father wouldn't explain himself to Noctis. When the time came, Noctis set out for his wedding in Altissia with only his three friends as his retinue. He gave a very brusque good-bye to his father that he'd come to regret.
As it turned out, the peace treaty was a trap and Niflheim used the opportunity to attack Insomnia and steal its crystal. Noctis was horrified to learn what had happened from a newspaper of all things--his father was dead, Insomnia had fallen, and his three friends had likely lost their families as well. His only hope now to take back his kingdom was to collect all the royal arms that his ancestors had left behind and to forge a covenant with each of the astrals in turn.
Along the way, Noctis found an unlikely ally in the sly chancellor of Niflheim. None of them trusted Ardyn--he was far too slimy for that--but he helped them time and time again, so Noctis privately just assumed that the man was looking to betray the empire. Unfortunately, once they finally arrived in Altissia, they realized that the man had his own secrets. Luna called upon Leviathan so that Noctis could form a covenant with her, but after he finished, Ardyn stabbed Luna in cold blood right in front of him. Luna died from her wound, and after Noctis fell unconscious, Ignis sacrificed his eyesight to the Ring of the Lucii in order to protect him from Ardyn.
The four friends were in turmoil after that, and they only really banded together again after Ignis yelled at them to get it together. Unfortunately Ardyn followed them onto the train to Gralea, and after using illusion magic to swap him and Prompto's places, Noctis shoved Prompto off the train. Before he could do anything to try to help his friend, Ardyn hit him over the head with Prompto's gun and knocked him unconscious.
Noctis woke up completely horrified at what he did to Prompto, but he quickly learned something even worse about Ardyn: the man was immortal. Shiva completely shattered him, and he returned a few moments later like nothing had even happened. Noctis was too stunned at this revelation to really react much when Ardyn suddenly injected him with a Niflheim invention that completely sealed off his magic. Forced to flee from the daemons attacking the train with Gladio and Ignis, Noctis was separated from them after the Regalia was destroyed.
Completely alone and defenseless, Noctis was forced to put on the Ring of the Lucii and accept its powers. He spent the next few hours running around Gralea in a desperate attempt to find his friends. The Keep was swarming with daemons, and to make matters worse, Ardyn had gotten ahold of the intercom system. He seemed to be enjoying watching Noctis struggle. Enjoying it too much, some might say.
Eventually, Noctis managed to regroup with Gladio and Ignis, and they released Prompto from where he was being held captive. Prompto revealed his own secret--that he was born to be like one of the MTs that they've been fighting all along. Noctis was shocked of course, but he cared about Prompto so much that he waved it aside without even having to think about it. Prompto was Prompto, and that wouldn't change.
With Prompto's ability to unlock all the doors in the keep, they managed to break the seal on Noctis' magic and gain access to their weapons again. Unfortunately, Ardyn sprang a trap on them, and surrounded by daemons, Noctis had no choice but to leave his friends to hold them off while he ran ahead to claim the crystal.
The crystal wasn't quite what he thought though. Caught in its magic, Noctis found himself being sucked inside. To make matters worse, Ardyn appeared behind him and seemed to think that now was a great time to reveal his tragic backstory. Over his own screams of pain, Noctis could only barely pick out that this man was his ancestor before he was pulled inside the crystal.
