[attr=class, bulk] Caius suggested that if the Regalia had meant that much to him, then it might be worth trying to get up the funds to acquire a car here on Zephon. “That’s true,” Noctis said a bit thoughtfully. “I’d like to have one again, and it would be handy to have around. Maybe if we manage to save up enough money between the four of us. You know, the worst part is that I probably still have a bunch of gil in the glaive somewhere. And all of it’s worthless here.” It would definitely take a while to fix up a car just doing odd jobs, but it was something to work for at least.
Caius’ old car definitely sounded like a fixer-upper, but Noctis could tell that he was proud of it anyway, and he didn’t blame him. A lot of time and money must have gone into it. “That’s true, you probably get around on Vordun just fine,” Noctis acknowledged as he glanced over at the blue dragon. “Actually, do you ever fly on him?” That sounded pretty awesome actually, though Noctis wasn’t exactly sure how you trained a dragon to not just throw you to your death. It probably helped that Caius had raised Vordun though.
Noctis perked up when the blond kingsglaive said that he had a beard in the future. Or at least…stubble. “Hey, it’s a start,” he said, grimacing slightly as Caius teased him about how small of a beard he’d had after coming out of the crystal. “Maybe the Draconian hooked me up with a razor. Sounds like the least he could have done after ten years.” It was a joke of course, but Noctis did still have to wonder about that whole decade. He hadn’t seen a trace of Bahamut since coming here. Was this how everything was supposed to go, or did that mean that he was in a different timeline entirely from what Caius had experienced?
Well that was something to keep him up at night.
“Somehow I don’t think a bit of stubble is enough to impress Gladio,” Noctis said with a faint smile, setting down his fork as he finished up his portion of fish. There was plenty left by the fire, but he was honestly stuffed. Somehow he didn’t think Caius would mind leftovers though when he had a dragon to feed.
“Thanks for the meal,” Noctis said, sitting back on his palms a little as he watched Vordun tearing into his own portion. “And for all the info. When I felt someone using Lucian magic, I definitely wasn’t expecting to meet a kingsglaive out of it.” He wasn’t complaining though. This had definitely been enlightening.

[attr=class, bulk] Cindy seemed to have worked out enough of what was going on that she said she wanted in on the action. Noctis wasn’t surprised that she’d put two and two together—none of them had been watching their words that closely since Alex had tried to cast the Sleep spell—but he was a little taken aback that she wanted to help directly. Back on Eos, her work on the Regalia had saved their skins more times than he could count, but she’d always stayed back in the garage. Maybe Cindy was feeling more out of her element away from Hammerhead than she’d let on in their first meeting if she was ready for a prison break. That or she’d gotten as fond of the four guys as they all were of her.
“I can’t ask you to put yourself in that kind of danger,” Noctis said, though he glanced at Caius at the man’s suggestion that they needed someone who could get the four of them away from the gulag quickly. “That’s true,” he admitted. “Between me and Prompto, I’m the only one with much driving experience, but I might be busy.” Potions took Lucian magic to make after all, and he didn’t want to think about what shape Ignis and Gladio might be in. “I guess having a getaway driver wouldn’t be the worst idea…” He was still hesitant about involving Cindy, but she had offered. He’d at least let the idea simmer while he went to go comfort Prompto.
His best friend took a worryingly long time before opening the bathroom door after he knocked. He was fairly certain he heard him blow his nose too, but finally Prompto slipped out. Noctis recognized that he was doing his best casual impression as he insisted that he was fine now in spite of his puffy eyes and red cheeks. It wasn’t the first time that Noct had seen the act after all.
It was when Prompto tried to apologize that Noctis cut in. “Why are you sorry? You told me that you two didn’t get along, and I brushed that off. I’m sorry, man.“ In the prince’s defense, ‘not getting along’ had been one hell of an understatement from what he’d just witnessed, but that wasn’t the point right now.
“And you’re right. We do need to make a plan, but…none of what he said about you was true, Prompto. You know that, right?” His friend had never had the best self-esteem, so he had probably taken every word of it straight to the heart like an arrow. That just meant that Noctis needed to stop and take the time to break off some arrowheads though. “I’ve never thought that you hide behind me. And I’m pretty sure Cindy likes you fine just the way you are. I know I always have.” Noctis had to rub his neck a little self-consciously since they were usually more inclined to laugh about life and play videogames together than talk about their feelings, but. You know. Sometimes that stuff was important. This felt like one of those times.

[attr=class, bulk] Noctis came very close to spitting out his beer at how casually Alex spoke about the struggle going on in his world. “Seriously? You mean you’ve been getting reincarnated for twelve thousand years?” That sounded beyond tiring, and it made him wonder if Alex even wanted that to continue. The guy probably wanted to rest at some point, right? “I don’t know if I’ve asked this yet, but who brings you back when you die anyway? Your world’s gods?” That would be the answer that would make the most sense to Noctis anyway. The astrals were the ones to leave him with the prophecy hanging over his head back on Eos.
He apparently owed Alex a camping trip, and that sounded just fine to Noctis. “Sure, we’ll definitely go if you ever make it to Eos. You have to taste Ignis’ cooking. The things he can do over a campfire are pretty incredible.” Except they hadn’t really tested that since he’d lost his eyesight. They’d mostly relied on canned food and cup noodles ever since, and it made Noctis pretty sad to think that Specs might lose one of his favorite hobbies on top of everything else. Maybe if he practiced at it he’d be able to cook by touch, but that sounded like a long hard road.
Thankfully the prince didn’t have much time to dwell on those dark thoughts as the topic turned to Emet-Selch. From the first description of him as a ‘shapeshifting master of darkness,’ Noctis felt like he was going to start sweating. Alex’s impression of the man didn’t help, and finally when he described how Emet-Selch had plunged a world into an eternal night of daemons, Noctis spoke up. “Honestly, if it wasn’t for that bit about him always having white in his hair, I’d kind of wonder if we had met the same person,” he said with a grimace, counting off the similarities between Ardyn and Emet-Selch on his fingers. “Shapeshifter—or at least illusions, check. Darkness powers, check. Super smarmy. Seriously, before we knew who he was, he recited some nursery rhyme about me crawling in pain and said I would find the cab fare to be more than I bargained for if I rode in his car with him.” Yeah, that one kept him up at night sometimes.
“And what you said about the eighth world. The sun barely comes out anymore which means daemons are running rampant now...I don’t know, you think there could be a connection between them somehow?” Not that Noctis wanted Ardyn to have any relation to the guy who had destroyed seven planets, but he felt it was worth the question at least.
“...Wait, he tried to turn you into a what?” Noctis felt that the concept of a light monster needed to be explained to him, but in his head he was imagining the opposite of a daemon. Maybe they couldn’t go out at night and had to stay under lamplight or something. “Got it though. If I see him, lots of light to the face.” Strictly speaking, the only light magic on the Ring of the Lucii was more of a reactionary spell, but maybe the royal arms would count.

[attr=class, bulk] Caius had apparently not even known that the Regalia was broken, which spoke to how well it had been fixed up. Maybe Cindy had worked on it during the ten years of darkness? He couldn’t imagine the guys taking it to a different mechanic at least. “It got completely totaled in Gralea, and we had to leave it behind,” Noctis admitted. “Then I never really left Niflheim since I got pulled into the crystal, so I figured the wreckage was still there. Maybe the guys retrieved it though.”
Apparently Caius had his own clunker car back home that he was attached to, and Noctis let out a sympathetic “Oof” when he said that it had probably been taken apart for scrap by now. “That honestly hurts if you’re the one who worked on it.” Cindy had been the one to do the actual tune-ups on the Regalia, but she had always sent them out on missions to retrieve their own parts, so Noctis thought he understood a little. It was devastating to just see all your hard work go up in flames.
Caius seemed more amused than anything that Noctis nearly had a coughing fit when he learned his age. He apparently heard that a lot, so the prince just sighed as he stroked his own very smooth chin. “Maybe someday I’ll be able to grow a beard.” It helped that Prompto looked even younger than Noctis did, but hearing that Caius was only two years older was definitely a hit to his self-esteem.
As they dug into the fish, Noctis nodded when Caius thanked him. He said his kingsglaive oath still felt real to him, which was totally fair since he was the one who had lived it. Noctis was the one who hadn’t met him yet. Caius reiterated that he’d do his best to help with the break-out in a way that wouldn’t put everyone else at risk, and Noctis honestly appreciated that. The more the better for something like this, but like he had said earlier, he respected the mercenary’s position. “Then we’d be glad to have you. I’m sure Specs and Gladio will appreciate it.” His nickname for Ignis came out pretty naturally, and he almost hoped that Caius wouldn’t notice. This entire day felt like a crash course in ‘how to lose someone’s respect for you as a king in one conversation.’
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Cindy seemed to like it in Provo since she wasn’t too busy but could still operate a garage. It really did sound like the best of both worlds. She also explained how she and Caius had met, and Noctis had to laugh a little when she mentioned Vordun. “Right? Crazy to see someone with a dragon. I mean, I’d probably be nervous around him without Caius, but he acts like a big dog with him at least.” He was glad to see people from Eos doing well here. Even if it was still weird to meet one of his kingsglaives from the future.
Caius had apparently not explained the situation with the other two to Cindy, so Noctis nodded slowly as he debated how much to say. “Yeah, I know where to find Prompto in Sonora. The other two…I think they’re in some trouble up there honestly. I just hope not too much.” He didn’t know what the conditions were in the prison, but that was part of the info that Prompto was supposed to be getting from Cissnei. Somehow he didn’t think he would like the answer.
It was a sobering thought, but he still tried for a grin when Cindy winked at him. “You’re right, I can’t imagine you not landing on your feet no matter where you ended up.” The blonde mechanic had seemed pretty tough ever since they’d met. So had her grandfather, so Noctis just nodded when she said that Cid was probably doing good wherever he was. “I bet he misses you too if he’s still at home. If you do run into him here though, let him know that my sword just isn’t the same without one of his upgrades.”
The old man really had done wonders for the engine blade. Just like Cindy had always put great work into the Regalia, and the thought made Noctis nostalgic all of the sudden.
“Tell you what. Once the gang’s back together, maybe we really will invest in an old car and bring it out here. I wouldn’t trust anyone else to fix it up.” They’d need some way to get around for as long as they were stuck on Zephon after all.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] Alex had apparently been trying to cast a sleep spell on Cindy, which wasn’t something Noctis had heard of, but the warrior of light had some weird stuff in his arsenal with his blue magic. As for why he’d been casting Sleep, the blond man didn’t really have time to explain himself before Cindy slapped him, which was honestly 100% deserved. If Noctis had to fill in the blanks though, Alex had probably been trying to knock her out since the rest of them were panicking about her being there. It had been…a choice, but Noctis could almost follow the logic, so he was ready to move on after taking a long drink of the beer that Tifa had gotten him.
Except that was when Prompto started yelling.
Noctis had known that his best friend had gotten off on the wrong foot with Alex, but he had severely underestimated just how much. Prompto wasn’t one to voice when he was uncomfortable, but here he was basically begging him to do the breakout without Alex, until the prince was left just starting at him uncertainly. “Prompto…” He was uncomfortably aware that Alex was right there, and he really didn’t want to have this conversation in front of him. Not when Ignis and Gladio were on the line, so he lowered his voice a little. “Look, can…we talk about this? Caius can’t do the actual break-in, remember? We need help.”
He planned to take Prompto outside, maybe let him cool off, but that was when Alex exploded. Noctis stared between the two of them in shock, stepping forward to intervene until one line rocked him back on his heels. Noctis can’t protect you this time.
It was a stupid throwaway line in an argument, but it still made something cold sink in his stomach because he hadn’t protected any of them, had he? Not when Ignis lost his sight, not when he’d thrown Prompto off a train, and certainly not right now when Ignis and Gladio were suffering and he couldn’t even put together a functional party to go rescue them.
It was suddenly suffocating in the bar and even when Alex said incredibly mean things to Prompto, Noctis couldn’t find the words to step in because he was in so much shock and weren’t they supposed to be friends? He’d never seen him like this before. Sure, Alex had always been a little rough around the edges, but so was Gladio, and he’d thought he could still count on both of them when it came down to it. Now though. Now he didn’t know. Maybe Prompto had a point in his outburst.
Alex stormed outside with his drink, and Tifa offered to go outside and calm him down. It was incredibly nice of her when she wasn’t involved in any of this, but Noctis couldn’t muster much more than a weak smile for her. He still felt too numb from the shock to do much of anything. At least until Prompto bolted for the bathroom. “Prom-” Noctis stretched out a hand and took a step forward, but the bathroom door clicked with the definitive sound of a lock behind him. The prince was left standing there, his arm slowly lowering as he took in how devastated and pale his best friend’s face had been.
Oh. Well there was the rage.
Noctis snagged his beer bottle off the bar counter and stalked towards the front door because even if the anti-magic barrier was in place around the outdoor tables, he was going to smash this godamned bottle over Alex’s head-
Weirdly enough, it was only Caius that kept him from getting into a fist-fight with Alex on the streets of Sonora. “We don’t have time left to spare. If there is a plan to be made, it needs to be made soon.”
Noctis paused with his hand on the doorknob, his heartbeat echoing in his ears as he stared down at the bottle in his hand. Astrals, if Gladio and Ignis could see him now. Or god forbid Luna and his father. With a bitter laugh, Noctis let go of the doorknob and turned to face Caius and Cindy. “Forget him then. We’ll do it alone.”
Doing his best to swallow his emotions, he walked slowly back to the counter, not quite looking at either of them. He wasn’t sure what they’d see in his face if he did. “You’re right. We need to talk. Prompto…has most of the information though. He’s the one who saw the prison in his visions and talked to Cissnei, so he has the layout but…”
But they’d all heard the lock click shut behind him. Shame suddenly sprung up in Noctis that his first instinct had been to go punch Alex instead of checking in on one of the guys when they obviously needed it. “Shit,” he muttered, hopping back up and making a beeline for the bathroom door. After a moment of hesitation, he quietly tapped his knuckles against the door. “...Hey man.”

[attr=class, bulk] Prompto had apparently gotten the same spiel from Caius as Noctis had, and he had a lot of thoughts about it. Like a lot. The prince mostly just let him get it off his chest, lips twitching in a faint smile when he went off topic about a documentary he’d seen on multiverse theory. Yeah, Noct had definitely missed Prompto.
“No, I agree. I’d say it’s more likely that we go back and forget all about this place. Especially if I’m supposed to be missing for ten years anyway.” He didn’t like to think about that. Caius hadn’t mentioned the other three ever not being on Eos, so did that mean they’d all return home and then he’d still be trapped here without them? Great, now that possibility was going to keep him up at night.
Eh, who was he kidding? Absolutely nothing could keep him up at night. The prince slept like the dead.
Noctis had said he wanted to know exactly what point Prompto had come to Zephon from, but he could guess with the way that his best friend stumbled over calling himself a duplicate. “Prompto…” He had told the blond man back in Gralea that it didn’t matter if he was a clone or a failed MT or whatever, and he still meant that. So when his friend asked if he thought it was the real him, Noctis clapped him on the shoulder. “Trust me, no one but you would tell me about multiverse theory while we’re stuck on a roof,” he said with a slight grin. “To be honest, I’m not convinced that this whole thing isn’t a fever dream brought about by the crystal, but you know if you’re real or not, yeah? So trust yourself.” Self-confidence had never been Prompto’s strong suit, but Noctis tried his best to build him up. Especially when Cindy was around.
Prompto seemed dubious that Tifa would have liked going fishing with him, which made Noctis defensive. “What? Everyone likes fishing.” It was the superior sport after all. No points on a scoreboard, no human interaction, no kingdoms. Just peace and quiet and nature. Plus you got food out of it. Fishing was awesome.
His friend wasn’t thrilled when Noctis started changing out of his winter clothes to something that would be less recognizable, but he joined in and switched to his outfit with the red shirt. His teeth were chattering a little afterward, and Noct couldn’t blame him. Astrals, but Sonora was cold. The sooner they got to the bar the better.
“Here we go then,” he said, glancing off the edge of the roof into the alley behind the building. All clear since everyone was out on the main road. They were on the third or fourth story though, so he’d have to give Prompto another lift down. “Sorry buddy,” he warned him, taking Prompto’s arm and grabbing a handful of snow off the roof. Chucking it down towards the alley, he warped them both down to the ground below.
Noctis landed lightly on his feet, but he was used to this whole thing, so he decided to check on Prompto before they slipped into the crowd and moved on. “You good, man? She said her bar was pretty close to the gates, so it can’t be too far.”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Noctis had to laugh at the thought of Vordun having access to the glaive and storing shiny rocks in there. “As long as I don’t reach for my sword and accidentally pull out a tree branch, he’s more than welcome to use it.” It was a slim chance since everyone’s individual items seemed to always be pretty neatly segregated inside of the glaive, but it was still a funny thing to picture.
Caius suggested jokingly that he give his powers to the Regalia instead, and a slightly sad smile crossed Noctis’ face as he watched the fish cook. “I wish I could have. We really did have some great times in that car…” It was only after a moment that he really registered what the kingsglaive’s final words meant. Caius had seen him use the Regalia. Caius lived in the future."Wait, what? You mean we fix it?” He probably looked a little strange to the blond man since he was getting so worked up over a car, but the Regalia really had been their home after Insomnia fell. It had been the last safe place left to them, and when the car had been destroyed, it had been like losing a piece of his dad all over again.
So hearing that the Regalia had been rebuilt. Well. Hopefully Caius would write off him wiping his face on his sleeve as smoke from the fire getting in his eyes.
Caius was apparently barely older than him, which made Noctis have to cough into one gloved hand. “Yeah, you…weren’t kidding about the beard making you look older.” He resisted the urge to add something childish like ‘Teach me your secrets.’ He probably would have said it with one of his friends, but Caius seemed to respect him as a king, and he didn’t want to ruin that completely. Even if he was a decade off from being the man Caius knew.
Noctis was also happy to hear that Cindy was doing well, though he nearly choked to hear that Cid was still going strong too. He could have sworn the guy was in his 80s even before the Ardyn apocalypse. “Cid’s still alive? Man he’s tough.” It did make him feel better with every person that was confirmed to be alive and well though.
They finally settled down to eat the fish with Vordun having a huge piece to keep him occupied. Noctis dug in and was pretty pleased with the piping hot result. It didn’t have the finesse of something that Ignis would have cooked, but Caius clearly knew what he was doing over a campfire and it was hard to beat fresh fish. “This is delicious,” he complimented him around a mouthful, going in the face of every single one of the citadel’s table manners lessons. Look, he was hungry.
As they ate though, Caius seemed to have a revelation, and Noctis nodded slowly as the man made his wishes clear. He didn’t want to be part of the main attack on the prison. “I mean. I can’t say I’m not disappointed since your powers would be good to have along, but I totally respect your decision. A leader’s got to look out for his people.” He knew that better than anyone. He did have to smile slightly at the statement that Caius was a failure as a kingsglaive before he shook his head in the negative. “You haven’t made me any oaths yet,” he pointed out. “So I don’t think you’ve broken anything. But if you insist that you have…”
After a pause, Noctis set down his fork to offer him a hand. “Then I’d be glad to have you in a support role. Not as a kingsglaive though. Just a friend.”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Noctis had been pretty shocked to hear from Caius that Iris had turned up in Zephon as well. Like most of the other people that they’d left behind in Lucis, he hadn’t seen her since they’d boarded the boat to Altissia. That felt like a lifetime ago at this point, so he was glad that they were able to set up a meeting through letters. He was on his way north to Sonora anyway, so Provo would be the perfect pit-stop along the way.
If only he knew what to say to her.
That wasn’t to say that he didn’t like Iris. Of course he did, he’d known her for over a decade, and she’d been something like a little sister to him over the years. If this was just a normal meeting, then he’d be super happy to see her, but she was obviously going to bring up Gladio. He couldn’t imagine how scared Iris must have been for her brother, but Noctis just wasn’t sure how much he should involve her in their prison break scheme. She wasn’t bad at all in combat—she was just still pretty young and in training, so he’d be worried about her getting hurt. Not to mention that Gladio would literally murder him if anything happened to her.
Noctis didn’t think they would involve her in the break-out team at least, but he wouldn’t put it past Iris to be persuasive enough to land a support role. Just like a real little sister, she could usually get what she wanted out of him if she pushed for it. Noctis blamed it on him being an only child. Unlike Gladio, he had zero practice at saying no to a younger sibling.
A bell dinged overhead as Noctis walked into the cafe where they were supposed to meet. Glancing around the cozy front lounge, it didn’t take him long to spot Iris. Even if they hadn’t seen each other in a while, he recognized her cropped dark hair immediately.
“I guess they just let anyone onto Zephon now,” Noctis said with a slight smile as he approached the booth where she sat with a cup of coffee. Then, to show he was joking, he shook his head. “Seriously, it’s good to see you, Iris. I’ve been wondering how you guys were ever since we took off for Altissia.”

[attr=class, bulk] It wasn’t until Noctis had taken a seat between the two blond men and he noticed the scowl on Alex’s face that he remembered. Oh god, he’d meant to talk to the Rising Stones leader about his misplaced hatred for Caius before now. He’d just been so distracted by trying to rescue Ignis and Gladio that he’d honestly forgotten until this very moment. Plus he hadn’t thought that their rivalry could be that bad, but every second that the two interacted was proving him wrong.
This was fine. They just had to get through this planning session, and he’d pull Alex aside to talk to him afterward. It would all work out, right?
…Right?
“Thanks Tifa. Could I just get a bottle of beer? Whatever your best seller is works for me.” He didn’t exactly know what was available in Sonora, so going with the local favorite was probably the best bet. Next to him, Prompto was clearly too worked up over Tifa to order, but Noctis was so used to it that he didn’t really bat an eye until he noticed that Caius had his head in his hands and Alex just looked like he was in pain. Time to rescue his friend then.
Without missing a beat, Noctis tugged off his coat and slapped it into Prompto’s lap to hide the evidence. “You looked pretty cold there, buddy,” he said with a straight face as Caius leaned over to check on him too. He mouthed ‘Thank you,’ at the kingsglaive as Tifa turned away to start making their drinks. It seemed like everything was starting to calm down and they’d be able to start talking about their plans.
And that was when a southern drawl spoke up behind them.
“Cindy?” Noctis asked, turning around on his bar stool to stare at the blonde mechanic in shock. That was some timing. He’d thought she lived in Provo, but maybe she was up in Sonora on business. It was probably way easier to buy car parts up here after all.
“Well…we were actually hoping to find the other two,” he explained a bit hesitantly. He didn’t really want to get her involved in something that could be dangerous, but Cindy wasn’t likely to turn them in for their plans either. She’d looked the other way often enough while they’d been working against the Empire back home.
Before he could say anything else, Prompto leaned in on one side to demand in a whisper why he hadn’t warned him that Cindy was coming. “I didn’t invite her man, I swear,” he hissed back before Alex suddenly leaned in on his other side. Noctis was now very caged in and not particularly enjoying it, but he choked a bit at the news that Caius had apparently murdered someone in front of Alex. That didn’t sound particularly in character for the Dragonblades leader, but he doubted Alex would just make it up either. “Did…did the guy deserve it then?” He asked tentatively, but that was when Alex hopped up off his bar stool and declared that Noctis would owe him for this.
“Er…yeah, you’re totally right, I will. I know you’re risking a lot for us, and you both have guilds to worry about. But I’m totally willing to pay you guys back however you-”
As Alex approached Cindy, it quickly became clear that he hadn’t meant that Noctis would owe Alex for the breakout. He meant something else, and that didn’t bode well. Not at all.
Alex was super nice to Cindy though, even going so far as to be a good wingman for Prompto. Noctis was just starting to relax when Alex suddenly blew a spell of unknown origin directly into the mechanic’s face.
“Dude!” Noctis was on his feet a second later, not sure what had just happened. Rather, he had no idea what spell Alex had used, so just to be safe, he did his best to grab him from behind in case more magic was incoming. Though honestly, it was a bit of a sad hold considering that Alex was at least a solid four inches taller than him.
Apparently there was an anti-magic field around the entire bar though. Noctis groaned at the news, letting go of his friend and giving everyone the same stern look that he swore he’d seen his father use on him before. Except Caius. Caius was fine.
“All of you better tip Tifa!” He sat back in his barstool before spinning back towards Alex like he had just remembered something. “And Caius didn’t steal your dog!”
