TEACH THEM BOYS A LESSON
Cindy had returned home after her and Caius had dealt with the low life that had scammed her. Well, Caius mostly, since she wasn't one to confront people about anything. She always believed karma would come full circle for people like that, but others weren't as patient as her. Of course, she had her work to distract her from anything that bothered her, so she would usually forget about it anyways. Cindy wasn't the type to get all worked up over simple things, there were more important things in life.
Like getting back to the shop and getting her hands greasy. Now that was something to take the mind off of things. Well, if there was something to do. Zephon didn't have a lot of vehicles, so her workload was usually pretty small. In her spare time, she worked on the car that she was rebuilding, so she decided to do that when she gotten back from dealing with the scumbag. The car ran, and it ran pretty well. Now the only thing she had to do was make it look nice.
Paint for cars was pretty hard to come by around Zephon, but she had managed to get her hands on some. The colors weren't really her favorite, black and orange, but they would have to do for now. She had already gotten primer on it, which had taken her about a week to find, so she was ready to start the actual paint job.
As she painted, she thought back to her conversation with Caius. Noctis was here, but she was still curious about the others. Noctis knew he had become king, but just how much did he really know? She didn't know everything herself, but she knew enough not to bring it up if she were to ever run into him. Stepping back, she looked over her work. She had painted the car orange first, and then put a light layer of black over it so the orange would still show through a little bit. Not her best work, but it would have to do for now.

[attr=class,bulk] Noctis had been itching to get to Sonora to try to find Prompto, but Caius telling him that a certain mechanic was also in Zephon had stopped him in his tracks. He hadn’t seen Cindy since they had all boarded the boat to Altissia. The prince knew that she could take care of herself, but she had still been one of the people that he’d worried about while the nights were getting longer and longer. That wasn’t an issue anymore in Zephon, but he still wanted to go see her. Since Noctis was going north towards Sonora anyway, he figured he’d make a little pit-stop in Provo after Caius gave him the address.
He really wasn’t looking forward to telling her about the Regalia though. It hurt to even think about the wreckage of his dad’s car that he’d had to leave behind.
The address ended up being a little out of the way, but Noctis was happy to smell a combination of paint and motor oil as he came up the walkway towards the house. It seemed like Cindy was still able to do what she loved even if they’d all been forced into a new life. He could see a garage and a small collection of cars out back, which seemed like a more promising place to start than the house. She had never seemed to like the indoors much.
As Noctis came around the corner, he slowed to a stop at the sight of a blonde woman bent over the hood of a car. She was carefully applying a layer of paint, so the vehicle must have been nearly ready to go if she was on that stage. Noctis couldn’t help the slight grin that rose to his face as he watched her work. It felt almost like being back at Hammerhead. Minus the desolate landscape.
“You know,” Noctis broke the silence, hoping that he wouldn’t startle Cindy too bad. “I was just thinking that I should invest in a car as long as we’re here.” Leaning against the door of the garage, he gave Prompto’s grease monkey goddess a smile. “Know where I could find a good mechanic around here?”

It had taken Cindy a bit to decide exactly how she wanted to paint the car. She could have gone the normal route and just painted stripes down the side or the top of the car, but that was too original for her. Since she was planning to sell the car, the fact that she had more black paint than orange was good. There were people who did like the bright colors for their vehicles, but most wanted a normal color.
Finally deciding to paint the area around the tires, the rims and the side mirrors orange, she put plastic over those areas and started on the black. It didn't take her long to finish that since black went on pretty easily and only needed on coat with the primer already on there. She had just started on the orange when a familiar voice almost made her jump.
Turning around, a grin appeared on her face at the sight of Noctis. "You've come to the right place, because it seems I'm the only mechanic in these parts." That might not be true, but that was the truth as far as she knew. The lack of vehicles made mechanics scarce in the area, and she had yet to meet another one. That was okay with her, it meant more business.
Grabbing a nearby rag and wiping her hands of some paint that had gotten on them, she made her way towards him. "I heard you were here, but I didn't think I'd see you so soon. How ya holdin' up?" It had taken her a little bit to get used to being in a new world, so she figured she'd ask how he was doing with it all as well. He had more connections in their world, so it probably had effected him worse than it had her.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class,bulk] Cindy played along and joked that she was the only mechanic in these parts, which wasn’t too surprising since Provo was just a bunch of merchants and farmers from what Noctis had seen. Not too many cars inside of the city, but definitely more than in Torensten at least.
“That just means you can get the entire market flocking to you,” he said with a slight grin. “There’s way more cars closer to Sonora, but I think you made the right choice. Reminds me a bit too much of the empire up there.” It even had the snow. Really, the resemblance to Niflheim was kind of uncanny now that he thought about it.
Cindy commented that she didn’t think she’d see him so soon, and Noctis nodded a bit more seriously. Time to get down to business. He could respect that. “Caius pointed me your way. It sounds like you met him too?” He was a good guy, even aside from being a kingsglaive. He was turning out to be one of the most reliable people that Noctis had met so far on Zephon. No wonder his older self had respected him.
“I haven’t really found somewhere here to settle down yet,” he admitted when Cindy asked him how he was holding up. “I’ve mostly just been running around trying to get the gang back together. Caius said I might have some luck finding the other three up in Sonora.” He didn’t quite want to get into the whole prison situation with her yet. Cindy wasn’t like Iris where she would insist on coming along, but he also just honestly didn’t know how to tell her that Ignis and Gladio were locked up. Maybe if it came up naturally as they talked more.
“What about you? You seem like you’re doing pretty well for yourself,” he said as he glanced around her garage. “I definitely wasn’t expecting to find you here though. Seems like we’re all turning up in this world. Makes you wonder.”

"Damn straight I can." Cindy gave a nod at his next statement. "Yeah, it kinda does. I like it here. Keep me just busy enough to not go stir crazy, but I don't get overloaded." Being the only mechanic and having no other employees, she was happy to not have a booming business. There were times that she had nothing to do, but she would usually just clean or wander around the area to kill some time.
"That I did. He helped me out of a bind, him and that dragon of his. Some jackwagon posted about needin' help with a car. Failed to mention that I had to go get the car and bring it back. Caius and Vordun found me and helped me bring the car back." It was definitely a relief when she found out that he was from the same place as she was, and knew the same people as well. Though it was the older version of them.
"Provo isn't too bad so far, though I haven't really gone around and met the locals. I just mostly stick to myself." She had done that back home as well, so it wasn't much different now. "Caius mentioned Prompto was with you, but couldn't say where the other two were." Cindy wasn't the type to pester people for information. If she wasn't supposed to know, she wouldn't ask, plain and simple.
Cindy looked around at her shop and crossed her arms. "You bet I've done well, look who yer talkin' about!" She gave him and wink and put her hands on her hips. "It's been okay. I miss Pawpaw, but I'm sure he's still his ol' onery self wherever he is." Who knew, maybe he was here? "It really does. I still haven't a clue how I, or anyone ends up here." Once again, she wasn't really the type to ask questions.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class,bulk] Cindy seemed to like it in Provo since she wasn’t too busy but could still operate a garage. It really did sound like the best of both worlds. She also explained how she and Caius had met, and Noctis had to laugh a little when she mentioned Vordun. “Right? Crazy to see someone with a dragon. I mean, I’d probably be nervous around him without Caius, but he acts like a big dog with him at least.” He was glad to see people from Eos doing well here. Even if it was still weird to meet one of his kingsglaives from the future.
Caius had apparently not explained the situation with the other two to Cindy, so Noctis nodded slowly as he debated how much to say. “Yeah, I know where to find Prompto in Sonora. The other two…I think they’re in some trouble up there honestly. I just hope not too much.” He didn’t know what the conditions were in the prison, but that was part of the info that Prompto was supposed to be getting from Cissnei. Somehow he didn’t think he would like the answer.
It was a sobering thought, but he still tried for a grin when Cindy winked at him. “You’re right, I can’t imagine you not landing on your feet no matter where you ended up.” The blonde mechanic had seemed pretty tough ever since they’d met. So had her grandfather, so Noctis just nodded when she said that Cid was probably doing good wherever he was. “I bet he misses you too if he’s still at home. If you do run into him here though, let him know that my sword just isn’t the same without one of his upgrades.”
The old man really had done wonders for the engine blade. Just like Cindy had always put great work into the Regalia, and the thought made Noctis nostalgic all of the sudden.
“Tell you what. Once the gang’s back together, maybe we really will invest in an old car and bring it out here. I wouldn’t trust anyone else to fix it up.” They’d need some way to get around for as long as they were stuck on Zephon after all.

Cindy let out a chuckle. "Oh he definitely is just a big dog with scales from what I've seen, but I still wouldn't want on his bad side." Vordun was still a dragon after all, no matter how much of a pet he could act like. She was glad to have met them on good terms and to have them on her side if she ever needed them. The fact that Caius was from her own home world was just an added bonus to it all.
As Noctis explained where the other boys were, she gave a nod. "Honestly, I'm glad Prompto's not the one in trouble. I'm sure he would figure it out eventually, but that boy isn't the best when he's alone in sticky situations." She had become close with the boys over time, even if they hadn't known each other too long and didn't know too horribly much about each other. They were a great bunch of guys, though they did get themselves into some odd situations.
"Pawpaw didn't raise a quitter, that's for sure." Cindy never gave up and always pressed forward. There was no use dwelling on things you couldn't change. Cindy gave a smile. "I'll be sure to tell him. One of these days I'll go looking to see if he's here. I won't put all my effort into it, but I could use the trek to learn the area as well." She didn't really have her hopes up, but wishful thinking wasn't always a bad thing.
Noctis then said he and the boys would get a vehicle and she rolled her eyes with a smile. "I'll be sure to leave a spot open for you every month, because I know how you boys are with cars."
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class,bulk] Cindy didn’t pry into the situation with Ignis and Gladio, which was honestly a relief since Noctis wouldn’t have known how to answer. It wasn’t too surprising really—the mechanic had to have suspected that they were infiltrating Niflheim bases and looking for Royal Arms and doing all sorts of illegal things back in Lucis, and she had been nice enough to never ask about it. Cindy knew how to let them keep a low profile, that was for sure.
Noctis had to laugh when her only comment was that she was glad it wasn’t Prompto who was in trouble. “That makes both of us. I just hope he’s staying busy in Sonora. Maybe taking a bunch of pictures. He can get pretty stuck in his own head, you know?” He had a feeling that Cindy did know, and after a moment’s pause, Noctis decided to try to be a supportive friend. “I bet he’d really like to see you too if you ever make the trip up to Sonora. He’ll probably want to catch up.” Hopefully the prince’s attempt to be a wingman was subtle enough that Prompto wouldn’t splutter too much and Cindy wouldn’t question it. For as much as Prompto obsessed over women, he could never seem to bring himself to be direct with them. Noctis didn’t pretend to understand why.
He nodded a bit more seriously when Cindy said she might go on a trek just to see if Cid happened to be around. “Yeah, learning the area definitely wouldn’t be a bad thing. And maybe you’ll find some other people from Eos too. That makes six that I know of, so maybe there’s more.”
Cindy didn’t seem as thrilled with the idea of the four of them getting a car here as Noctis had been, but her smile gave her away even when she joked that she’d basically leave them a permanent spot at her garage. “The Regalia didn’t break down that much,” he said with a laugh. “I guess we were pretty into upgrading it though…” Understatement. They had probably single-handedly paid Cindy’s bills for a while there. She’d definitely have a lot of work on her hands if they did decide they wanted to fix up a car.
“It might take a while anyway. It’s more of an idea right now. First I have to find everyone, and we’d have to make enough money to afford one. Good thing we’re used to doing odd jobs I guess.” Noctis had never minded getting his hands dirty or doing things that were unsuitable for a prince. That had ended up coming in handy on Lucis, and it was even more useful now when his title was worthless here.
His mind drifting back to Caius, Noctis hesitated for a moment before deciding he was curious what timeframe Cindy was from. “Hey, this might be a weird question, but what’s the last thing you remember back in Lucis? Caius just got me thinking since apparently he’s from at least ten years in the future…” It would be weird to hear that this version of Cindy was from earlier or later than him, so he really hoped they lined up. Maybe Caius was just a fluke.

TEACH THEM BOYS A LESSON
Cindy wasn't too keen on getting into anyones business. Honestly, she had just enough on her plate to keep her sane and busy, she wasn't looking to add anything more to it. If it didn't involve her, or she couldn't help in any way, she didn't need to know. At the mention of Prompto, Cindy gave a smile. "Of course I know, but he does take damn good pictures. I'll definitely track him down whenever I'm there next if I have time. I mostly go there for parts or other stuff, so I'm there and gone pretty quick." It would be nice to catch up with the other boys.
Truth be told, Cindy hadn't know that many people in their home world. Sure she met a lot of people through the business, but they were all pretty much come and go. Most of them were just people passing through and needed work done, so a lot of people she never saw more than once or twice. They only reason she knew the boys well was because they stopped by a bit more than others, and they actually had conversations with her instead of just dropping the vehicle off and leaving until it was done.
"Yes you were, and that was just fine by me." Cindy obviously loved working on cars, but she liked it even better when she wasn't fixing them, but improving them. "And you guys a damn good at them too. You'll have the money in no time." Thought she wasn't sure he'd have Ignis and Gladio back as soon, but she was hopeful for that as well. They just weren't the same without all of them together.
Noctis was then asking her what she last remembered, and she had to think for a moment. "Oh man, I think it was right before the Starscourge hit. I had just fled from Hammerhead and went to sleep one night and woke up here. From what was happening there at that moment and what was coming, a part of me is glad I was brought here." Though the rest of her world had to go through all of that, and for that, she wasn't glad.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class,bulk] Noctis agreed with a faint grin when Cindy said that Prompto took some damn good pictures. “He really does. Just wish he wouldn’t take so many photos in the middle of battle. He has a pretty majestic one of a coeurl mauling my face.” As long as that one stayed tucked away in the photo album, then the prince wasn’t too upset about it though. It was something to laugh about now.
“I don’t blame you for not staying in Sonora longer than that. I’m sure he’d love that though if you tracked him down.” Noctis felt like that was about the most he could say without embarrassing his friend. As it was, he hoped that he found Prompto first just so he could give him some warning. A surprise visit from Cindy might have been enough to give his best friend a heart attack.
Cindy seemed like she’d be pretty happy to work on a car for them as soon as they could afford one, so Noctis nodded, his spirits lifting already just at the thought of it. “That would be great as long as we’re here. Or maybe even after we get home.” The prince rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a little bit more somber as he decided to tell her the truth. “I don’t know if you ever heard, but the Regalia’s in…bad shape. I had to leave it behind in Gralea…” That hurt to admit. Logical or not, losing his dad’s car had been like losing him all over again. It was just another piece of the king that he might never see again.
Honestly, if anyone else could understand the Regalia’s loss, maybe it was Cindy with all the hard work that she’d put into that car.
Noctis had to wince at the mechanic’s description of when she’d shown up on Zephon. “Yeah, you’re from about the same time as me then. You’re saying you had to flee Hammerhead?” That was just sad. He couldn’t picture that little truck stop without anyone inhabiting it. Let alone what must have happened to places like Galdin Quay or Lestallum. It was so frustrating to think about what might have been happening to Eos at this second. What Ardyn was doing to it.
“I’m glad you’re here too then. And that you’re safe.” Noctis let out a slow breath as he glanced to the side and clenched his fists down by his sides. “I just hope we can take everything back someday.” It might take ten years according to Caius, but the prince didn’t plan on giving up even if it did take him a decade.
