[attr=class, bulk] Tifa was doing pretty good for her first time fishing, but Noctis wasn’t surprised that any physical activity would come easily to her. They’d already established that she fought with only her fists and that she could probably bench-press his entire body weight. She wasn’t likely to need his help reeling in even the largest fish in the ocean, and he honestly admired that.
What Tifa ended up proudly pulling out of the lake was an average-sized carp that looked a few inches larger than what he’d caught today. “Congrats, you definitely win,” he complimented her with a slight grin. “Good job, first-timer.” Tifa then offered him the fish that she’d caught for the cats, which was nice of her even if it wasn’t surprising. She hadn’t planned on going fishing today after all, so she hadn’t exactly brought a cooler along. Maybe someday they could go on a proper fishing trip together. If they were both stuck here for the long run.
“Thanks. I’m not the best cook, but hopefully I can impress some cats at least.” Ignis would probably disagree, but thankfully he wasn’t here to offer his opinion on Noct’s cooking skills. Putting Tifa’s fish away into his armiger next to the other one, the prince stretched his arms up overhead as he considered the small lake stretched out in front of them. The moon was starting to come up over the horizon, so it was probably time to pack up unless Tifa also wanted a crash course on night fishing.
“What’s the verdict? How did you like your first time fishing?” Hopefully it had taken her mind off of some things at least. Between her earlier conversation with Sephiroth and her hurt friend, the bartender seemed to have a lot on her plate. “And hey, if you ever need help with that guy you fought before, you know where to find me. Maybe the place will be less rubble by then.” Alex seemed pretty invested in getting the guild’s headquarters fixed, so Noct assumed that it would be up and running again soon after that crazy blond guy had knocked out a wall.
“And…thanks. For not making a big deal about the whole prince thing.” Tifa had been pretty casual about it really, which is what Noctis wished more people had done back in Insomnia. “I guess it doesn’t matter much until we all find a way home anyway.” It wasn’t as good a thought as he wanted it to be. Sure, it was nice to not be anyone special for a change, but he had left the world in a bad state. He didn’t like to think about what Ardyn would do in his absence.
Well that was a dark thought again.
“Want to try your luck a second time, or are you ready to head back?”

[attr=class, bulk] Caius agreed that Vordun tended to act like a dog or a cat, but also slid in that the dragon could definitely eat them if he wanted to. Fair enough. That was partly why Noctis hadn’t been eager to argue with the blue dragon over his fish gift. If Vordun wanted him to pick up a slobbery fish, then he’d pick it up. Noctis wasn’t arguing with anything that had teeth that big. Even if Vordun was friendly.
The kingsglaive admitted that he wasn’t entirely sure what the dragon ate when Caius wasn’t around since he didn’t tend to leave too many carcasses around the forest they lived in. After a moment though, the blond mercenary looked down at the fish thoughtfully, and Noctis had to laugh. “You know, that would explain a lot. He caught that fish by himself pretty easily, and he’s been really excited. Maybe he’s done this before.”
Caius’ description of not being able to figure out a camera phone was odd to him, and Noctis gave him a curious look over the top of the fish. “Aren’t all phones camera phones?” He asked, before remembering that even if this version of Caius was older than him, he had actually been born way after Noctis. Which meant that he’d mostly grown up in whatever world Ardyn had created while the prince had been off in the crystal. He was almost afraid to ask. “Did…technology revert or something?”
Caius started dragging over stones to cook the fish on, and Noctis was relieved that he seemed to know something about cooking. Following suit, he came over to help the blond man set up. “You know how to cook? I can definitely help, but with Ignis around, learning that was never really a priority…” After his friend had lost his eyesight, it was pretty clear that he should have learned, but hindsight was 20/20.
That was tasteless even as an accidental comment in his own head.
“Did he ever…?” Miraculously recover his sight? Probably not, but hopefully Ignis had learned to adapt and it didn’t inconvenience him too much after ten years. It was Noctis’ fault that he’d had to put on the ring after all. He still felt so bad about how much Ignis had suffered for it.
As they set up the fire, Caius finally explained the story of Alex’s dog, and Noctis was left staring at him in confusion. “...Wait, that’s it? Huh. I wonder why Alex thought you poached her…” It didn’t sound like she’d talked to him before leaving at least, and Noct thought he had an idea of why if Cassie had mentioned a friend who had nearly gotten her killed over and over. Now that sounded like Alex.
After Noctis had promised to be careful, Caius let out a long-suffering sigh that would have made Ignis proud. Apparently the prince wasn’t too responsible in his thirties either, so Noctis gave him a small smile in return. “Well. Careful within reason.” His definition of reason was just a little different than some people’s.
Now that the fire pit was all set up, Noctis settled in next to Vordun to watch Caius roast the fish. Honestly he hadn’t even realized how hungry he’d gotten while they’d been talking.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Tifa had been in some fights in her day if she’d helped take out an evil corporation and then fought some other dude. Noctis wasn’t sure he really understood what the other guy’s deal was or how he fit into the story though, so he had to laugh when Tifa admitted that it was kind of a confusing mess. “Sounds like it. You said he’s here though since he hurt your friend? Is he going to be a problem?” Ardyn certainly would be if turned up on Zephon, so Noctis just wanted to make sure that Tifa would be okay with one of her enemies running around.
He hadn’t really been sure if she’d answer his question about why her life had been uprooted before, but she surprised him by opening up a little about her past. A really painful past apparently. “That…sounds really rough.” That was an embarrassing understatement, so after a moment, he rubbed his neck and made his own admission. “I mean. My dad was killed too. When our city was invaded. So I get how hard that is. And I hope you can get some closure.” Noctis himself was still working on it. Maybe he’d get there eventually.
After he hauled up the small fish that he’d reeled in, Tifa rubbed salt in the wound by calling it cute, and Noctis groaned even if he had a smile on his face. “Well, it’s better than nothing at least.” The bartender then made a comment about him being royalty and liking animals, and the prince grimaced a bit, realizing that he’d basically given himself away in the stupidest way possible. “Guess the cat’s out of the bag then?” It wasn’t a stellar pun, but he thought Ignis would be pleased anyway if he were around. Specs had been the only other one in the group to ever appreciate puns and even make his own.
Tifa’s body language suddenly changed, and glancing down at the way her fishing line was moving, Noctis realized that she’d gotten a bite. “You got this!” He wasn’t a huge fan of backseat fishing, but Tifa was new to the experience, so the prince was ready with advice and encouragement. “Now you just got to reel it in slowly…”

[attr=class, bulk] Caius bowed in response to Noctis praising his fighting skills. Before the fall of Insomnia, the prince had tended to wave off displays of respect like that, but now he just nodded in acknowledgement. “You’re welcome. It’s nothing that isn’t true though.” If he was going to be a king someday, then it was time to start acting the part more. Even if it wasn’t the most natural thing in the world for him. He was introverted enough to have to work at it.
Vordun was apparently thrilled about the huge fish, and Noctis laughed as a dragon tongue was swiped across his face. “Hey, hey!” He patted his blue shoulder scales with one hand while wiping off his cheek with the other. “You know, you’re like a big dog in some ways.” He never would have guessed that about dragons, but this one had been raised by a person at least. That probably changed things.
“Only a day? Vordun must eat a ton,” Noct reacted to Caius saying he wouldn’t need to worry about feeding the dragon for a little bit. “And…you take photos too?” The blond mercenary was just making him nostalgic for all his friends today. He could almost picture Prompto losing his mind over the giant fish, gesturing for them all to pick it up so he could get the best photo. “I think you’ll get on just fine with the other three.” Not that he needed to tell Caius that about Prompto since they’d already met apparently.
“Well this will be a beast to cook up,” he said, finally bending down to look over the fish. Cooking wasn’t his strong point honestly, since he mostly relied on Ignis for that. Maybe they could manage something collectively though. Caius seemed pretty self-sufficient. Speaking of, it suddenly occurred to Noctis that their earlier conversation had gotten cut off with the appearance of the huge fish.
“Oh, right! The dog you stole. I haven’t heard the whole story, but I think he was saying some girl named Cassie ran off to your guild with the dog after you poached them or something?” That was the best description Noct had anyway, so hopefully Caius would be able to make sense of everything with that small amount of details. “And I’ll be careful. Er. Really careful actually.” Considering that Alex had already nearly driven him off a cliff once. He had promised not to tell that story to any of his retainers though, and Caius probably counted considering he was a kingsglaive. Not that it seemed like the blond man needed anymore reasons to dislike Alex. Still, he still didn’t plan to give any of them a heart attack with that particular story.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Noctis blinked in surprise when Tifa explained that her old world really didn’t have a government besides that evil corporation. “Well, that’ll do it,” he said a little sheepishly. He didn’t imagine that a business would rule a country super well since its main purpose was to make money as opposed to working for the people. “Are they still up and running? Sounds like you guys were trying to do something about it.”
Tifa seemed a little blown away that his power came from the gods, and he rubbed the back of his neck as she said that his family must have been powerful. “Well…sort of. But it’s just me now.” It felt a little hollow admitting that he was the last of his line. If he didn’t have kids anytime soon, then the line of Lucis really could die with him. That was definitely Ardyn’s goal anyway, and it was looking more and more likely to happen. Even if he was stuck here now, his fiancee was still dead, and the thought of replacing Luna made him incredibly uncomfortable.
That was a gloomy train of thought, and he was glad to bury it by focusing on Tifa’s job instead. Apparently she didn’t run a bar here, but she had chosen just to work in one instead. “I don’t blame you, that sounds way less stressful.” Quickly balancing his pole between his knees, he stretched his arms out overhead before asking. “Is it here in Provo by the way? I’ll have to come check it out sometime. I’ve never actually been to that many bars.” Mostly because of the security nightmare, but he and Prompto had managed a couple before back in Lucis.
Noctis looked at Tifa a little curiously when she said that the transition had been rough but that it wasn’t her first time having her life uprooted. “What do you mean?” She might not want to expand on that since it sounded a little personal, but that was fine too. He knew how to shut up and take no for an answer.
After he felt a fish latch on to his hook, Noctis had jumped to his feet without really explaining anything first, and that was maybe a mistake from the way Tifa leapt up too while looking ready for a fight. “Sorry, just a fish,” he said with a slight laugh. He understood being jumpy though—he’d definitely gotten attacked by enough MTs at a moment’s notice before. It made him wonder why Tifa would be so used to being jumped too though.
Tifa teased him by calling him the king of fishing, and Noctis very nearly dropped his pole in the lake as he turned to look over his shoulder at her. “What? You mean you knew?” Almost as soon as the words were out of his mouth, it occurred to him that ‘king of fishing’ was probably just a saying and he tried to cover himself by coughing. Smooth.
“I mean-...Yeah, you got it. This reels in the line, and hopefully pulls the fish in with it.” With that, he dove into the battle before him, strategically turning his pole in the opposite direction that the fish was trying to swim while he slowly reeled it in. Eventually, he managed to yank it up out of the water, though he had to sigh a little in disappointment at the sight of the fish hanging off the end. “It’s a little small,” he said with a laugh. “And just a trout. Should work for the cats I’m trying to feed though.” Reaching out a hand, he carefully worked the fish off the end of the hook before sending it off into his glaive. It would keep in there until he had time to clean it and cook it up for the cats. Not that he was a great cook, but hopefully he’d absorbed something from Ignis at this point.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] Caius had apparently never met Gladio personally, though he had seen him while in a large group of other kingsglaive. The blond mercenary seemed pretty modest about his time in the group honestly, but Noctis waved that aside. If the guy had fought in the battle of Insomnia and saved his life, then he was pretty stand-out as far as Noct was concerned. Now, it was still weird to think of the kingsglaive reporting up through him and his magic instead of his dad’s, but that was a whole other issue.
Caius laughed at the question of whether or not Vordun called the shots, explaining that he was still a young dragon, so he was sort of like a big deadly toddler. Noctis loved that description honestly, especially in contrast to the unamused blue dragon still unblinkingly watching their fishing poles. Somehow it really fit Vordun.
Caius agreed that it would be a good idea to look for the astrals, though he had some reservations about Alex. Noctis snorted under his breath at the description of him as a ‘wandering drunken mercenary.’ “Yeah, that’s Alex.” He could have defended his friend, but that was pretty accurate honestly. “I know he’s kind of a disaster, but he really does know his stuff. He can do magic I’ve never seen, and he’s supposedly killed immortals before. Wouldn’t hurt to see what I can learn.”
Finally, in a long-suffering voice Caius explained that Alex was going around and accusing him of taking his dog. For a moment Noctis just stared at him, but then he couldn’t stop himself from cracking up laughing. “Wait, wait! You’re the one who stole his dog?” That story had always been a bit dubious, though Noctis had mostly accepted it at the time. Caius didn’t exactly seem like the dog-snatching type though, so he now suspected there was a lot more nuance to the tale than Alex had let on. Go figure.
As Noctis tried his best to reel in the fish alone, Caius came to his aid. He was a lot taller and stronger than Noctis honestly, so it was appreciated even if being dragged backwards along with a gigantic fish gave him a huge rush of nostalgia for the guys. Hopefully they’d all be together again soon though after they managed the prison break.
Not if he became a fish’s dinner though. Together, he and Caius had managed to fling it overhead towards the beach, but it was starting to bear down on him with its mouth open. Before Noctis could do anything though, Caius held out an arm and sprang into action. Honestly, it might have been automatic on his part if he’d used to guard Noctis, but the prince respected his wish and stayed back. After a moment, he even let out a whistle of appreciation as Caius warped around and let loose with his daggers. It was kind of surreal to see his magic on someone other than one of the guys, but Caius obviously knew what he was doing with it. Not a bad first kingsglaive at all.
Well. Not that Caius was first chronologically, but he was the first that Noctis himself had met. All this time travel stuff was messy.
Caius managed to knock the fish back towards the beach with a well-placed Fira spell from a weapon that Noctis kind of wanted to examine later. The sword had a mechanism on it that looked a bit like his Engine Blade. “Nice!” he called over, but apparently he spoke too soon as the monster fish suddenly flopped up and launched itself straight towards him. Vordun fried it with his fire breath before it could latch onto Noctis, but at Caius’ warning, he summoned his trusty Engine Blade to his hand. Reeling back, he tossed it forward like a javelin before warping after it in a flash of blue. Reappearing directly over the top of the monster fish, he drove his sword down and through its head, skewering it to the beach.
“Kind of a messy ending,” he joked, banishing his weapon and looking gingerly at the fish blood all over his pants. Well, he’d definitely been covered in worse. “You didn’t leave me much to do though. You weren’t kidding about being a kingsglaive. We were lucky to have you.”
With that said, he glanced between the fish and Vordun. “What do you think, bud? Big enough for you?”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] Prompto looked shocked for a moment before he laughed and shoved snow at him in half-hearted judgment. Since Noctis was still lying down, the wet slush ended up directly in his lap, but that was okay. Damp pants were the least of his concerns at the moment now that he’d finally found one of the other guys. “Looking for you,” he answered in response to what he was doing. “And I definitely didn’t fall. Let’s call it jumping with style.”
Prompto seemed even more nervous than usual about the guards running towards them, and he wondered if his best friend had already had a run-in with them before. Sonora law enforcement was particularly nasty from what Caius had said. And obviously they were holding Ignis and Gladio hostage, so they must have been tough. Still, Noctis wasn’t inclined to hurt real people that were just doing their job unless he or Prompto were backed into a corner.
That car chase with Alex had definitely qualified, and he had a feeling that the prison break would too. But for now, these guys shouldn’t be too tough to shake. There were enough buildings around them that the guards wouldn’t be able to climb without magic. He’d just have to take Prompto along for the ride.
The blond boy got up first and offered him a hand, so Noctis grinned up at him before he clapped their hands together and rose to his feet. Prompto even yelled that he had his back just like he would have when they were fighting MTs or something. This time though, Noct just laughed under his breath and tightened the grip he had on Prompto’s hand. “Good, you better hold onto it then.” Summoning his blade to the opposite hand, he turned and flung his sword up towards the roof of the building next to them—a pizzeria apparently. It did smell pretty delicious.
Just as the guards reached the crowd, Noctis warped upward in a flash of blue light while taking his best friend with him. The pair reappeared as he grabbed his sword near the edge of the restaurant’s roof, and they fell back against the shingles with a thump, still holding hands. “Ow. Sorry, rough landing,” he coughed, while glancing over at Prompto and finally letting go of him. “You okay?” It definitely wasn’t the first time that he’d warped along with one of them, but Prompto was still pretty new to all this. Noctis didn’t even loan him magic too often, because he tended to panic and unleash it while they were all still in Blizzara range.
So cold. It had been so cold.
Not that it was great on this snowy roof either. Rolling over onto his stomach, Noctis peered over the edge of the roof to see what the guards were doing. Hopefully they’d be too confused at them disappearing to have noticed the blue streak of his warping magic.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and

[attr=class, bulk] Caius had apparently discovered on his own that behemoth meat went great with cup noodles. Or at least Vordun had helped him discover it. It was so weird to think that two people had made that discovery separately and Noct had to laugh a little at the talk of how it enhanced each of their flavors. “I think you and Gladio will get along just fine. I’ve never met anyone else who could rival his love of cup noodles.”
The blond mercenary was nice enough to help him with the slippery fish bait—judging from the way he’d hid his head in his hands he was probably just embarrassed and felt like he had to step in though. Caius even cut off a piece to use for his own lure, and Noct made sure that Vordun approved before they both cast their lines back into the sea. “Does he usually call the shots?” He had to imagine that a dragon owned you and not the other way around.
As his line drifted with the waves, Caius asked a question that Noctis had somewhat been dreading. What next? That was the problem, wasn’t it? There was everything and nothing to do from here. “I’m not sure yet,” he admitted, keeping his eyes on the horizon. “I want to get home obviously, but before that…I feel like I need a way to end this. Right now I’m just like I was when I left.” He wouldn’t be able to kill Ardyn as he was. And if Caius was to be believed, he needed about ten more years of experience before that battle anyway.
“I have a few ideas though,” he admitted. “I met this guy Alex who’s dealt with immortals back in his world before. I want to see if he can teach me how he did it. Then…I heard some of the gods in this world have the same names as the astrals? It might be worth wandering around to see which ones I can find. I was supposed to meet Bahamut in the crystal after all, and that definitely hasn’t happened yet. Worth a shot at least.”
After Noctis trailed off, he looked back at the sea, his mind turning again to what Caius had said about Cup Noodles. It had honestly really made him miss Gladio. At this point, he just wanted to see all his friends and make sure they were safe. He’d even take Gladio dragging them all over Lucis again to find the perfect Cup Noodle ingredients. Speaking of which.
“You know, shrimp is pretty good in Cup Noodles too if Vordun likes-” There was suddenly a massive tug on his fishing line. It was so unexpected that it actually yanked Noctis forward until he managed to brace himself against the sand with the water halfway up his boots. “Shit!” He yelled with a laugh, doing his best to hang on until he could reel whatever monster this was in.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] It turned out that Alex couldn’t remember his previous lives, which sounded like a major flaw in this whole reincarnation thing if you asked Noctis. You’d think that whoever had first made him a warrior of light would have wanted each life to build on each other. Unless maybe it would get too confusing to keep this life straight when you had all your past memories. Noctis could see that. Keeping them shut away might have been the best choice for Alex’s mental health.
Er. Not that his mental health seemed stellar in the first place, but Noctis wasn’t one to talk.
“At least I’ll know what’s going on if your eyes are glowing and you suddenly start acting all dignified,” Noct said with a faint grin as Alex went on and referred to himself in the third person. That apparently hadn’t been intentional, because it stressed the blond mercenary out to the point where he literally screamed, and Noct himself nearly spilled his drink until he realized that Alex was just freaking out. “Shit, I thought you were dying for a second,” he swore, trying to come back down before checking on the guy. “Er. You okay? I mean, sure, it’s a little weird you being multiple people and all, but I’m not the greatest example of normal either, right? So don’t worry about it.”
He wasn’t helping, was he?
“...You…want another beer?”
Nailed it, Noctis. Maybe this was why he’d always been a bit of a shut-in. After a minute though, Alex recovered enough to say that the gods must have been desperate to send Noct to him for training, and the prince had to laugh, shaking his head as he eyed the blond’s slightly messed-up hair. Without even missing a beat, he pulled some hair gel out of his glaive and slapped it on the table. What else were friends for?
“You’re not that bad, you know. You make some choices sometimes, but I think it’s pretty funny honestly.” He meant that too, but those words were definitely tested when Alex responded to the revelation that he was related to Ardyn with ‘that’s rough, buddy.’ He did at least follow it up with a story of how his first life’s best friend had tried to turn him into a monster and murder his other friends, and Noctis could only stare at him for a moment in response. “...How many times have you had to save the world exactly?” The answer was probably going to make him feel like a failure for struggling so much to even do it once, but he felt that he should at least ask.
Alex suddenly stood up so fast that his chair fell over, and Noctis once again almost had a heart attack. Apparently it was just to emphasize his question though, and it was the weirdest question he had ever been asked. For a moment, Noctis just stared at him with no idea what his facial expression even was right now. Was. Was Alex really asking if he was together with Prompto, Ignis, and Gladio? Like at the same time? He couldn’t have been serious, right?
If Noctis had been older and already a king, maybe he would have taken the mature route. But as it was, the prince was still barely out of his teens, and he chose violence.
“Yeah, absolutely,” he said with a shrug while doing his best to keep a straight face. “You know how it is. When you’re getting married, so your best bud decides to join your battle harem. You mean I didn’t give you that whole spiel back on your world?”
All joking aside though, he did wonder why Prompto would have gotten so offended at the idea of Alex sharing his powers.
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] Tifa laughed and admitted that what had been going on underneath her bar had indeed been some illegal activity. Noctis wasn’t sure that he blamed her though after hearing the basic summary of the situation. “Wait, so this company was just wrecking the planet? Why didn’t the government do something about it? It just sucks that you guys had to step in.” Maybe it was natural that he’d blame whoever ruled in her world since he was a prince, but he also knew firsthand how bureaucratic things could be. His dad had definitely never gotten everything done that he’d wanted to since he’d been at the whims of the council. Maybe that corporation that Tifa had mentioned was just really good at lobbying.
Her friend with a machine gun for an arm was apparently secretly a sweet guy, which made Noct laugh under his breath a little. He sounded kind of like Gladio, honestly. His shield could be tough to handle, but then he’d bundle up in the back of the Regalia with a paperback romance novel under one arm. Noctis had known better than to tease him for it though.
Tifa was getting dangerously close to the truth about his situation, so Noctis rubbed the back of his neck as he sheepishly admitted “Just my family. My ancestor made a deal with one of the gods like 2,000 years ago, and it’s been handed down ever since.” He had a feeling that he was going to have to admit that he was a prince before the day was out at this rate, but he didn’t mind so much now that they had been talking. It just wasn’t his favorite fact to open a conversation with.
She seemed a little embarrassed when he offered to help her move some items with his glaive, and he nodded when she pointed out that bottles of liquor were heavy. “No kidding. Do you run a bar here too?” It made sense to make a living doing what you’d done before—It was why Noctis had taken up Alex’s offer to join the Rising Stones after all. Monster hunting and other odd jobs were how he and the guys had paid their own way around Lucis before. It just made sense to keep doing that.
Tifa really had come from another world like him, and Noctis nodded sympathetically. “Bet that was real disorienting if you were asleep right before you showed up.” Noctis didn’t know if it made it any better that he’d been awake considering the last thing that he’d seen was Ardyn’s smug face as he was sucked into the crystal. But at least he’d been expecting to turn up someplace odd.
Before Noctis could ask anything else, there was a sharp tug on his fishing pole, and he grinned as he shot to his feet to reel it in better. “Got a bite!”
