Another day in the rather busy streets of Torensten. It'd been a good four months or so since she arrived in this strange world, and Joanna had managed to do quite well for herself. Ultimately, she never did find a party to go adventuring with like Faris had suggestion; there was one that she probably would have considered joining, but at the time, she was more focused on getting her bearings. If she ever saw that man again, maybe she'd consider asking if he had room for one more in his guild. Until then, she was making a living as a traveling healer and occasional slayer of undead. She especially always jumped at the chance to do the latter. Blasting zombies with Dia spells was great for venting frustration.
Of course, her friends were always in the back of her mind. Or at least, the so-called Warrior Of Light. Or "Wolly", as she had taken to calling him while on their journey. It was ironic. Everything about the man was one giant question-mark, due in large part to his own amnesia, yet he was the only one she clearly remembered from their party. She could clearly recall that the other two were there, but that was it. Trying to remember any specific details about them, regardless of how minor they were, just ended in a headache for the girl. So instead, she just pressed on. Maybe she'd eventually come across them. It always seemed like you're most likely to find something when you're not looking for it, right?
For now, Jo was simply making a quick stop in Torensten, stocking up on supplies and preparing for her next outing. The zombies swarming Metaia Temple weren't going to exorcise themselves. She was being offered quite a bit of gil to clear out as many as she could, and that place sure as heck wasn't going to run out of them anytime soon. Running down the list, she spoke quietly to herself "...let's see...potions, check...food rations, check. And plenty of antidotes and holy waters just to be safe. Think I'm re-" Her words were cut off as she proceeded to roll a Nat 1 on her perception check and walk straight into someone from behind. Stumbling backwards and barely catching her balance.
"Ah! Sorry about that! I got a bit sidetracked, so I wasn't paying attention!"

"Diaga!"
The moment those words echoed from the a short distance away, the immediate area was blanketed by a bright holy light. While it would do nothing to Thancred himself, the undead caught within said light would immediately begin writing in the closest thing they could probably feel to pain. Most of the weaker ones would be outright destroyed, but the more hardier ones would still take a fair amount of damage. Either way, it succeeded in one thing; cutting down the numbers of living corpses, even if only a little bit. And the ones that were still standing were weakened, which would give Thancred an easier time dealing with what was left. No doubt a welcome development.
Should he look to find the source of the spell, he'd find a young girl in white robes, probably no older than 15 or 16, wielding a large metal hammer; though, in this case, she seemed to be pointing it toward the general area of Thancred and the undead monsters approaching him, as if she was using it to focus her spell. At first glance, she didn't seem like she'd be out of place as a Conjurer from Eorzea, though two things would potentially come off as strange; namely, her very obviously not wielding one of the wooden wands or canes universally utilized by Conjurers, and the fact that the spell she just used simply doesn't exist in his world.
As for what she was doing here, that was simple. While the temple was always overrun with undead and demons, it seemed that there was an unusually (read; even more than normal) large number of undead in the area. Joanna was asked to look into it and, if possible, at least lower their numbers back to a more manageable amount. Given that undead was the one thing her world's version of White Magic could be used against offensively, she was more than happy to take up this particular job. She hadn't expected to find a random stranger in the mix, though. "Are you okay?! I gotta say...I didn't think there'd be anyone else all the way out here."

She wasn't surprised that Faris couldn't offer an answer to her question. Frankly, nothing about this place seemed to make any sense. Or at least, nothing in regards to how and when she got here. From what she could tell, everything else seemed pretty standard compared to her own world. Of course, she had no idea how wrong she'd end up being, but that was beside the point at this moment. At the very least, this world didn't come off as anything she wouldn't be able to handle. She wasn't sure what she would do though. Maybe she'd seek out a church somewhere. Even if it wasn't the one she went to, if nothing else, it might help to learn about this place's history and religion.
It wouldn't be too difficult. She spent her entire life studying. The only thing she didn't know was where to start looking. And she had a good feeling that no one here would care enough to point her in the right direction. Her new friend included, if she was forced to guess. He didn't exactly strike her as the religious type, but that was okay. The generosity and advice he'd given her was more than enough for her to trust him. As they walked, and Faris gave one piece of advice and encouragement, she nodded quietly. She might just be a white mage, but lord knows she had plenty of fight in her. It remained to be seen how long that would last, but it was there.
And so, she listened to Faris' request about Bartz. Frankly, the message she was asked to give him made her wonder just what kind of relationship they had, but she figured it wasn't her place to pry. So she'd deliver it as is, should she end up stumbling upon him at any point. Once the two of them fully parted ways, Joanna let out a sigh. Truth be told, she'd be lying if she said she wasn't nervous. There were a lot of things she could do right now, and she had no idea where to start. But for the time being, there was one thing she was sure of. She needed to get away from this place and find somewhere a little less unsavory to rest. She could figure out the rest after that.
In the months that would follow, perhaps Faris would catch wind of the rumors about a young girl who wore white robes and wandered around, helping those in need and offering her healing services. She never directly stated that she was charging for her assistance, yet everyone seemed more than willing to part with some Gil to thank her for her help. Those who couldn't pay would offer some other modest gift; eventually, she just learned to roll with it. It wasn't easy, but little by little, the young girl was starting to find her place in this world. And though she was mostly just living day-to-day, one thing was clear; she wasn't letting this world get the better of her anytime soon.

This was admittedly a bit of a surprise. At least with Faris, the crystals from his world seemed to share some basic similarities with her own, even if their general functions were noticeably different. Bit from the sounds of it, the crystals in Caius' world were completely different altogether. Even if it was a different world from hers, she found it difficult to fathom only one crystal existed, or that they weren't tied to a specific element. The only thing that appeared to remain the same is that his crystal was a source of great power, same as hers and Faris'. It seemed the only difference is that she was the only one so far who wasn't able to directly tap into her crystal's power.
In spite of her confusion, she found all of this fascinating. How many other worlds were there that had different crystals with different functions? Where there any that were actually the same as her own world's crystals? As much as she disliked being stuck in this strange new world, she had to admit that all of this was rather excited. Getting to meet other people and learn about completely different worlds from her own; she could safely say she never would have expected anything like this to happen. She'd probably enjoy it a lot more were it not for the fact that her own memories had more holes in it than a wedge of swiss cheese.
She watched in a combination of amusement and bafflement as the dragon randomly decided to light a tree on fire. "...does he always do that?" She also watched as Caius proceeded to seemingly have a conversation with the dragon. Could he actually understand it? Was he just guessing based on the grunts and growls he made? Maybe they were just putting on a show for her. She had no idea what was going on, but but it was amusing. Regardless, as he went on to explain that Torensten was indeed a town, her interest was piqued when he went on to talk about his guild. "Ooh. A guild, you say? What kind of guild is it?"

Joanna listened quietly as Faris talked about her own encounter with the warrior, though one detail in particular caught her attention. "W-wait...two seasons? As in around seven or eight months?...wait, so if you met him that long ago, then why am I only just now arriving here? I mean...yeah, my memory is full of holes, but we'd barely traveled together for a month and a half...and I definitely remember us traveling together before coming here...so...how..." At this point, she just gave up. She knew that trying to make sense of any of this would just lead to more questions and headaches. Letting off an annoyed grunt, she was ready listen to anything Faris might say. Otherwise, she gave up.
Moving on, she blinked as Faris pulled out a pouch, wondering what was inside of it. She didn't have to be curious for long, though. Noticing how discreet he was being in attempting to give this to her, she was just as discreet about accepting it. Enough money for a week; hopefully enough for her to find her footing in this strange world and find some ways of making some coin of her own. She felt conflicted. On one hand, she knew she would need it. She had no more than a few coins to her name, and she wasn't even sure if it'd be accepted here. On the other hand, the look on Faris' face made it clear he was going to be hurting for cash because of this.
Despite her initial temptation to deny the offer, however, she chose instead to not dishonor his generosity by trying to act "humble" and not accept it. Quietly placing the coin into her pocket as not to draw any more attention than they already were, she smiled softly and nodded. "Thank you...hopefully, when we meet again after this, I'll be in a position to repay you." She distinctly made a point of emphasizing the "when" as she spoke. Call it a hunch; call it woman's intuition. Either way, she had a feeling this wouldn't be the last time she'd meet this man. And despite them still being together at this exact moment, she was already looking forward to whenever that would be.
She listened quietly to Faris' last bits of advice, taking it to heart. She still had no idea how she ended up in this place, but she figured it'd be stupid not to listen to someone who has far more experience in dealing with this place. Lastly, as she mentioned her friend once more, giving a name and brief description, she nodded "Deal...if I see him, I'll let him know he's got a friend looking for him. And if you do see Wolly, tell him Jo said to take care of himself. Hopefully, when we meet up again, I'll be able to say I was able to the same for myself."

Admittedly, Joanna knew she was probably laying it on a bit thick by saying they were "destined" to come into possession of the Crystals, but at the same time, she couldn't think of any other explanation. Four people, each with a crystal that was related to an ancient property that would later prove to be vital to saving the world in hand, and they each just so happened to end up in the same place at the same time right when the kingdom was in the middle of a crisis that only they could deal with, and would eventually lead into many other quests of equal importance.
There was no way in hell that was a coincidence; at least that's what Joanna believed. It was as though fate itself bent over backwards to ensure it would happen. Nevertheless, since Faris elected not to say what he was clearly thinking, Joanna chose not to bring it up any more than she already had. Whether destiny guided their hands or it really was the most contrived coincidence in the history of literally anything, there was no denying one thing; it was a good thing it all happened, or else their world would have been doomed.
When she spoke about Bahamut, Faris' reaction confused her a bit "Eh?...well...I don't know what a "summon" is, but he was the leader of a race of peaceful dragons we found in an underground cave. In exchange for some treasure located in an abandonned citadel, he used his magic to give us an exceptional boost in power. In particular, I gained access to a lot of high-end White Magic spells that were, until that point, too advanced for me to be able to cast. It was nice to finally have access to an offensive spell that actually affects creatures other than zombies..." She let out a soft sigh.
She then listened quietly as Faris went on to explain his own situation with one of his friends, and how they apparently didn't remember anything about what they did before coming to this world. She could tell from the way he spoke that it was breaking his heart; she could only imagine. To finally meet a familiar face, only for them to not remember you or what you did together. She couldn't remember who her other two allies beside the Warrior were, but at least she remembered that they existed; if nothing else, she hoped that she'd remember them if she ever came face-to-face with them.
Either way, as she took in Faris' last question, she let out a sigh "Well...of course I'd like to meet back up with them. Though...with no clue where I am are no hints of where they might be located, I might as well stumble through a dark cave with no light source in trying to find them. So...for now, I'm thinking that inn is sounding pretty nice right about now..."

Well this was annoying. These tunnels were like a labyrinth; the more Joanna explored them, the more she felt as though she was making zero progress in actually finding a way out of them. Much like poor Arc, she hadn't been paying attention to where she was going and fell into a gap in the ground, though she managed to cast a last-second Protect to minimize the damage from the fall. It still hurt like heck, and her clothes were a bit roughed up, but it ultimately wasn't anything a quick casting of Cure wouldn't fix. That was about three hours, though it was beginning to feel like three days.
Silently cursing her luck, she pressed on, looking for whatever way through the tunnels she could find. So far, the only saving grace was that there didn't seem to be any monsters down here. Unless she was just really lucky and managed to avoid them thus far. A very real possibility, and one that she wasn't dismissing despite having found nothing to indicate that there are monsters who make their homes here. At the very least, she was surprised she hadn't come across any bats or spiders. If there was any place to run into such creatures, this seemed like the place.
As she continued along, she spotted two people. Finally, signs of life! However, both of them looked like they'd just fallen in. Assuming that they were together, Joanna ran up to them and quickly assessed the damage; the older woman appeared roughed up a bit, but otherwise fine. The smaller boy, on the other hand, looked like he'd taken a rather nasty fall, and was in all-around much worse shape. She didn't bother saying anything to them. Her instincts as a healer kicked in, and she immediately started doing what she did best.
Materializing her hammer and holding it towards them to focus her magic, she called out "Healara!" A small surge of white energy emitted from her body, and both of them would soon be bathed in a healing light; to them, it'd feel like a less potent version of Cura, yet just different enough that they'd probably be able to tell that it's an entirely different spell; granted, the command she let out upon casting that would also make that bit fairly obvious. It was only after casting the spell that she'd begin to speak. "Are you guys okay? You looked like you took a rather nasty fall..."

Joanna was pleasantly surprised at Faris' reaction when she brought up the Crystals, especially the part where he said that he was a Warrior or Light from his world. Apparently, however, the circumstances were slightly different. And then there was his question about the Crystal giving her her power; she could only assume she meant her gift as a White Mage. "Well...it seems our versions of Crystals are slightly different...ours didn't empower us in any way, for one thing...we were simply destined to come into possession of them..."
It was strange. The more they spoke the more she began remembering. Her memory was still full of holes, but little by little, they were starting to fill up. "Right, I remember now...see, there were two sets of Crystals in our world; the small ones we each received, and larger ones hidden in caves and shrines which had an effect on nature. Elemental fiends were draining energy from the larger crystals, and it fell upon us to stop them and restore light to the larger crystals by recharging them with the smaller ones..."
She paused to let Faris process that, then continued. "As for my powers, no...they were my own from the beginning. I'm guessing it must be different where you come from, but in my world, people are born with a talent for a specific type of magic, and that's all they can learn. As far as anyone is aware, there's no way for a White Mage to learn Black Magic, or vice versa...of course, Red Mages are a thing, but they're pretty rare. Anyway, even among those a natural talent for a type of magic, some realize it sooner than others..."
"I don't mean to brag, but it turns out I was extremely gifted in White Magic...it's probably part of how and why I ended up becoming a Warrior of Light. It was the same with Wolly; there were plenty of warriors in our world, but he was exceptionally skilled among all of them, even with his amnesia...I still can't remember them, but I can only assume the same of our other two allies." She smiled "Anyways...yeah...I won't say it wasn't intimidating, to suddenly have such a tremendous responsibility thrust upon us, but we still pushed on regardless."
Upon hearing the last question, Joanna blinked "...I'm not sure...the last thing I remember is defeating the fourth and final elemental fiend and returning the light to the last crystal...oh yeah! We also met with Bahamut and received powerful upgrades...though, as painful to admit as it is, it seems that upgrade was somehow stripped from me as I came here...I can only guess something here canceled out Bahamut's magic, because I'm suddenly back to just being a normal White Mage..." Joanna let out a sigh.
The more her memory's started coming back, the more she found herself not liking the situation she was in. "Anyway...beyond that, I don't recall anything else...if we did anything beyond restoring the crystals, it's a total blank, but I can't shake the feeling that there ended up being more to our journey than that..." It was official; this "amnesia" thing was getting old. Though, now she at least had an idea of what the Warrior of Light was going through. She at least had some of her memories; she could only imagine what it must be like to not even remember your own name.

She listened quietly as Caius took it upon himself to elaborate on what he was talking about earlier, which Joanna was rather grateful for. It was when she heard the word "crystal", of course, that everything finally started to click together. "Oh! So your world has Crystals too, huh? Granted, that's the first time I've heard of them doing anything like that, but, it's nice finding a common ground. You're not the first person I've run into that came a from a world with them, after all."
She continued to listen, smiling at his response to her comment about the dragon. She realized after saying it that it might have come off as judgmental or overly negative, so she was glad that he took it in the spirit intended. Last thing she wanted to do was offend someone she just met with what, at the time, seemed like a harmless observation; it wasn't as though she was accusing him of anything. Either way, she nodded in agreement "Yeah no kidding...no offense to your friend here, but I still can't help but find it hard to believe..."
Nevertheless, the conversation shifted to her (lack of) luck in regards to finding a party to travel around with, and she quietly nodded in agreement with his comment. Finally, someone gets it. Though, from the sounds of it, he already had a healer in his group. Darn. Well, he might still let her join. For now, she wouldn't push it. If he offered, great. If not, then at least he seemed nice. If nothing else, may he could help her find her way through this forest and point her in the direction of some civilization.
As she listened to him explain himself, she nodded quietly. While she found it hard to believe that anyone could fall asleep while riding on the back of a flying beast, it would at least somewhat explain his...less than stellar entrance. What caught her attention was when he mentioned where he was going. "Torensten? Is that a town or something? If it isn't too far away, would you mind if I tagged along until we got there? I've been itching to get something to eat for a while now."
Post by Joanna Baltas on Jul 16, 2019 4:43:33 GMT -6
Ah, so he knew about White Magic after all. Guess she didn't need to explain it after all, but at least it was nice to know that their worlds apparently shared something in common. Either way, Joanna couldn't help but smile at her comment. And it was true. As much of a firecracker as she was, she always knew when to focus on the healing when it was needed the most, and proved to be fairly effective at it; even some of the priests at her church were impressed with how much raw talent the girl had in the healing arts.
It was a very underappreciated talent, and one that a lot of people seemed to take for granted. 'How hard can it be to just keep healing someone?', people would often ask. None of them had ever been in actual battles before; you have to keep track of not just your allies' heath, but the enemy as well. If you do nothing but focus on your allies, then it leaves you open to an attack from the enemy. Meanwhile, if you focus too much on where the enemy is and do nothing but try to avoid them, your allies suffer from the lack of support you're supposed to provide.
It's all about finding the right balance, and it's much easier said than done. Nevertheless, it was ingrained into her mind even before she had her first taste of a real battle, and she took to it like a fish to water once she finally did, even in spite of her impulsive nature and general urge to just smack the nearest monster with her hammer. She wasn't one to shy away from the front-lines, but she knew her limits, and knew when it was time to take her role as a White Mage seriously and let the actual fighters do what they do best.
She couldn't help but frown a little at Faris' response to her question about joining with him, though she could at least understand where he was coming from. It didn't make the rejection sting any less, but she understood it. So why did she feel like she'd just been spurned after confessing her love or something along those? It didn't help that the more she looked at Faris, the more she couldn't help but notice how handsome he was. 'Stop it, Joanna!' she mentally chastised herself. This wasn't the time to act like some smitten teenager.
Even if that was more or less exactly what she was.
Either way, she didn't say or do much as they made their way into the table inside of the tavern; even in her own world, she was used to standing out so the stares didn't bother her all that much. Even without Faris' comment, she could tell that the men here weren't exactly a pleasant bunch to be around. She looked around, pretending not to notice any of the less-than-savory looks she was getting or hear any of the mumbling from those wondering how "such a scruffy looking guy landed such a sweet girl".
She was fairly sheltered and a bit naive, but even she could tell what they were implying by that, and she managed to form enough of a poker face to not turn beet-red at the mere thought of it. While she wasn't completely against the idea, especially considering how nice he was being, she had more important things to worry about. As such, she just tried to push it all into the back of her mind. Luckily, a much-welcomed distraction came when Faris returned to the table with some food.
It didn't look like anything she'd ever eaten before, but she had to admit it looked and smelled good, so she dug in, and let out a soft squeal of delight after her first bite; a clear indication that she enjoyed the food. Then came the questions, to which she nodded. Fair enough. "Well, to start with, the world I'm from doesn't have a name like this one appears to...or, if it does, I've never been told what it is. I've always just known it as "the world". As for myself, I grew up in a large kingdom called Cornelia...was raised by one of the churches there."
Giving Faris a moment to register what she said, she continued. "As for Wolly...there's honestly not much I can tell you about him specifically...at least nothing you probably don't already know. We met, ironically, just as I was getting ready to set out on my own as an adventurer. He and I, along with two others had each gotten a managed to come into possession of one of the Crystals in our world; I had the Crystal of Wind, which was given to me as a gift by the head priest before I left, and he had the Crystal of Water."
Another pause "Though, due to his amnesia, I have no idea how he came into possession if it...nor do I have any idea of where he's from or what he was doing before he came to Cornelia. There were two more; the Crystals of Fire and Wind...but...for some reason, I'm drawing a total blank on who possessed them. I know they were there, and I can clearly remember traveling with then, but my memory suddenly gets extremely fuzzy when I try to remember them as individuals...frankly, it's getting annoying..."
She let out a sigh, the irony of her situation not lost on her. "He was the biggest mystery out of the four of us, yet he's the only one I have a clear memory of...figures, right?" After a sigh, she continues. "Either way, turned out the crystals were part of an ancient prophesy, and it became abundantly clear that fate had something in store for us, so we decided to travel together...and that's about all I can clearly remember. I have some vague recollections of the things we did as party, but most of them are really hazy at best..."
