It had been a good while since Jo came to this strange land and had a fateful meeting with the ridiculously handsome pirate(?) in the trade capital. Although fate would have them go their separate ways despite Joanna initially wanting to tag along with him, she ultimately decided to take him up on his advice and find someone to travel with. Unfortunately, that was proving to be easier said than done. She had tried numerous times to join a party or two, but everyone seemed to assume that she was just some random kid.
Not entirely wrong, granted, but it wasn't as if she wouldn't be of any use. What kind of adventuring party doesn't have need of a healer?Let alone a healer with a large hammer for cracking the skulls of anyone she doesn't feel like healing. Either way, she couldn't help but be annoyed. While she at least had her bearings and had some idea of where she was going thanks to Faris, she wasn't any closer to figuring out how she came to this strange place and where her friends are.
The only one she had a clear memory of was the so-called "Warrior of Light". She didn't know his name, mostly because he himself wasn't entirely sure on it. She'd personally taken to calling him "Wolly", based on the acronym for "Warrior of Light"; WoL. As for the other two, she thought she remembered them well enough, but suddenly everything was fuzzy. She remembered that they existed, and that she and Wolly traveled with them, but that was it. Frankly, it was kinda annoying. But not as annoying as what she was currently faced with.
Three of the the most "straight out of a picture-book" looking thugs approaching her, each one drawing a sword. They looked so much like the stereotypical 'stupid bandit' archetype that it wasn't even funny; actually, it was kinda funny, and the only reason she wasn't laughing was because the act got very old very quickly. Watching these guys carry on was getting a bit boring. Eventually, she started paying attention again, just in time to catch the last bit of the apparent leader's spiel. "Oi! Are you listening?! I said hand over all yer Gil, otherwise I can't guarantee me mates an' I won't hurt ya'...so what do ya say?"
Officially bored of this, Joanna proceeded to deadpan her response. "Oh no. Whatever will I do. Someone please save me." These assholes clearly singled her out thinking she was going to be an easy target. She'd quickly prove them wrong as a large hammer suddenly materialized into her hands, and she, with a deceptively-powerful swing, proceeds to slam the head of it straight into the side of the apparent leaders face, sending hurtling to the ground. She lacked the raw strength needed to outright knock him out, but it was more than enough to stun him for several moments.
"B-boss?! You bitch! You'll pay for this!" Despite their panic, the other two bandits readied to attack. Joanna just let out an annoyed sigh "I swear, you guys are the most boring bandits I've ever seen..." To be fair, she hadn't seen very many, but it was just that hard to take these guys seriously. Either way, she definitely needed to vent some frustrations...
...though she wouldn't complain if someone were to leap in and "save" her. Even if they weren't particularly strong, neither was she. She wasn't particularly looking forward to a long, drawn-out fight, even if she was confident she'd win.
After the absolute disaster that was Caius' lessons with Yuna to ride atop Vordun, Caius was starting to finally get the hang of it. He was still a little nervous this high in the air at times, but Caius had begun to adjust and trust in Vordun. Though he'd needed to craft a saddle due to the fact that unfortunately, it turned out dragon scales tore up your legs pretty easily even with armored clothing, with too much movement and friction. So he'd had a saddle custom ordered, one that would allow Caius to not only protect himself, but also secure himself better to Vordun to keep from falling off. After that, he'd begun to get more comfortable aboard the saddle.
Comfortable to the point he'd fallen asleep on the saddle during one specific trip.
Caius couldn't remember what sort of job they'd been on, only that they were on the way back to Torensten when Caius' fatigue had gotten the best of him and he had dozed off with his head face down on the cloth of the saddle. He trusted Vordun not to do anything risky, and that he would alert him if anything became necessary. And that the saddle would secure him just fine and keep him from falling off.
The sound of growling would wake Caius up gingerly as the mercenary would let out a few grumbles as he sat up and rubbed his eyes. "Sup, Vordy?" Caius mumbled toward the large blue dragon, who was just above the size of the largest of horses. Vordun motioned downward, and Caius peered down toward the outskirts of the Headstone Forest. Odds were it wasn't an illusion if they weren't even in there yet. But he did see a group of roughly dressed, armed individuals closing in on a woman with a hammer. Letting out a sigh, Caius began to unhook himself from the saddle.
"Bloody bandits" Caius remarked as he would stand to his feet. "I'm going in first, back me up Vordun" Caius called to Vordun, who had already begun his descent. A big grin crossed the glaive's face as he would allow himself to fall backwards off the serpent. As he fell through the sky, Caius tried to wake himself up properly, but sleep still muddled the edges of his head. Looks like a skydive wasn't going to be clearing out the cobwebs. But a good fight just might. Before he hit the ground, Caius drew his gunblade and tossed it downward in an arc, activating his Warp ability to break his fall and catch the blade. The rest of the fall was easier and wouldn't hurt, and Caius landed on his feet between the woman and the bandits, bringing his palm down to the ground to steady himself before slowly bringing himself up. Perfect landing, he thought.
Spinning his blade, Caius grinned toward the bandits, quite proud of himself for -finally- sticking the landing.
And then Vordun landed nearby as Caius took a step, the tremor the dragon's landing caused sending Caius tumbling forwards with a yelp.
"Bloody hell, and I had it!" Caius groaned, shooting the overgrown lizard a look as he sprung himself to his feet. With that, he turned to the bandits.
"So, wait. Is it bandits or highwaymen? They always use different names, which is it?"

It wasn't long before the apparent leader was back on his feet, still reeling a bit from the sudden blow to the head, but more or less able to think straight again "Oi! The hell did that come from?! That frickin' hurts, you know!" Joanna simply rolls the comment. "Yeah, that's kinda the point of hitting someone with a weapon. And believe me, I've got plenty more where that came from!" She stood, ready to fight. Seeing this was enough to give one of the bandits pause, even if only for a moment. The leader, on the other hand, was raring to teach the girl a "lesson". Jo had one in mind of her own.
Of course, all of this would be abruptly interrupted when a blonde man appeared from seemingly out of nowhere, making quite the grand entrance. Joanna couldn't help but be impressed, and the bandits were dumbfounded. However, he promptly ruined it by falling on his face when his dragon shook the ground just enough to throw his balance off. Amusingly enough, the bandits were so focused on the display that they somehow didn't even notice the dragon, who had landed just outside of their line of sight. They weren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.
"Ey get a load of this clown! Tryin' to play the hero only to make an ass of himself!" The three bandits all burst into laughter, while Joanna was more worried than anything else. This guy wasn't exactly inspiring a lot of confidence, cool entrance and apparent pet dragon aside. It was only after their hearty laughter that one of the bandits noticed the dragon, prompting a look from the leader as he fearfully tried to point it out; all he managed was incoherent stuttering, but it got the leader's attention nonetheless. And upon seeing it, all of the color drained from his face.
A girl and some bumbling fool? Sure. He was (misguidedly) confident that that he could handle them. But a dragon? Nope "....shit...l-let's get out of 'ere, boys! I ain't signed up of for this!" This, the bandits turned tail and ran. Joanna let out a sigh, annoyed at the thought of them getting off scot free, but not really inclined to chase after them. They weren't pestering her anymore, and hopefully, they'd think twice about trying to rob someone out in the open like this. Turning to her "savoir", she smiled "Well...can't exactly call that a smooth rescue...but I appreciate it nonetheless."
Of course, with the pleasantries out of the way, Jo had some questions she needed to ask.
"Anyway, where the heck did you come from? It's like you appeared out of nowhere...was it a Teleport spell? I mean... that's a fairly high-level Black Magic spell and you sure don't look like a Black Mage...unless Red Mages can learn it?...are you a Red Mage? Also, what's with that dragon? The way you act make it look like it's your pet or something, but I've never in my life heard of anyone taming a dragon! Are you some kind of...dragon knight or something? Is that even an actual thing?"
Certainly couldn't fault the girl for a lack of curiosity.
Caius wasn't surprised the bandits were laughing. He'd fallen, and people like that usually laughed at that sort of thing. He dusted himself off and promptly cracked the krink out of his neck. "Still half asleep. I was napping on the-"
And then the bandits saw Vordun, who snorted as a bit of steam erupted from his nostrils. They didn't seem very happy to see a dragon, and Caius supposed he couldn't blame them. Not many people reacted well to a dragon showing up out of nowhere.
"Yeah, that. I was napping on that."
Caius had brandished his blade as a grin had begun to spread across his face, adrenaline coursing through him as he prepared for a fight. He was beginning to wake up proper and the cobwebs were beginning to clear from his head when instead of meeting him and Vordun head on for a fight, the bandits seemed to decide that they weren't dealing with a dragon. Watching them flee, Caius shrugged his shoulders as he would hold up his gunblade, only for it to disappear in a flash of light. "Well, that was uneventful" He remarked with a disappointed sigh before turning to the woman they had been pursuing.
He smiled lightly when she mentioned appreciating the help, even if it wasn't all that smooth. Sure, he took a little hit to his pride, but it didn't matter much to Caius considering it got the job done and done right. That was really all he cared about.
But then the questions began to funnel out and Caius supposed he should have expected this. Vordun made his way to them and sniffed at Joanna's head while she rattled off questions. Caius took a moment before he tried to answer them one at a time.
"Warp Strike. Power of Kings" He answered question one. "Kingsglaive, not a Red Mage" Was for question two. "This is Vordun" He spoke toward question three, motioning toward the blue dragon. "I raised him from a hatchling, he's more my partner than my pet."
He looked around then, then looked to her.
"So what were you doing around the Headstone Forest? Its not exactly safe in this area, after all. You're lucky that bandits were the worst of your worries."

Joanna couldn't help but frown a bit; in the process of answering her questions (an admittedly impressive feat given how many she flung at him at once), all Caius really did was bring up even more questions. She had no idea what a "Warp Strike" or a "Kingsglaive" was, and despite the urge to ask what those were, she had a feeling it'd just open the door to more headaches. What she did understand was the part about him raising his dragon from a hatchling; while she'd never heard of such a thing being done, it at least sounded plausible.
"...you know, in my world, raising a monster, let alone a dragon of all things, would make it very easy to be mistaken for some kind of evil wizard or something. In a lot of eyes, monsters are to be slain and nothing else...befriending or even raising them is nothing but suspicious..." As she spoke, she had a smile on her face, indicating she was only being half serious. What she said wasn't untrue, but she could tell he was a decent guy even before they began interacting, so she wasn't too worried about the whole "possibly an evil wizard" thing.
Besides, she wasn't exactly a stranger to taboo herself, being a girl with an extremely religious upbringing who was undeniably attracted to others of the same sex. Needless to say, she had good reason to not go around judging others over something else that might be viewed in a similar light; so long as it wasn't blatantly evil, of course. But this wasn't. Either way, when he asked what she was doing out here, she let out a sigh. Admittedly, she could understand why he'd want to ask that, especially given the predicament she was in a moment ago.
"Honestly, I've been looking for a party to join, but everyone either insists they don't need a healer on their team or just assumes I'm some dumb kid who'll only drag them down. I mean, sure, I only know White Magic, but I can hold my own in close combat too."
She then looks around quietly before tacking on one minor detail "...and I may or may not be a bit lost...not really familiar with this place yet..." Needless to say, an obvious understatement. She liked to think she had a good sense of direction, and for the most part she did. Or at least it wasn't so terrible that she was constantly lost. But everything about this place was new and strange to her, and it was throwing her off. It didn't help that the place was full of creatures and objects she'd never even heard of before.
"Anyway...I could ask you the same thing! A guy riding a dragon through the forest isn't exactly normal, you know!" Not that any of this was "normal". Honestly she just wanted to change the subject; or in this case, flip it around back to Caius.
Caius realized quite quickly by her expression that he hadn't exactly been clear with what he was saying. What seemed like general, easy to understand sayings to him were nothing but nonsense in this world and that was something he needed to get used to. Deciding to take the initiative, he would clarify quickly.
"I once served a King blessed with the power of the Crystal. I was entrusted with a portion of that power" He summed up, hoping that would suffice. Though he couldn't help but smile faintly when she would indicate that in her world, he would be mistaken for some kind of evil wizard of some sort. "I suppose I could see why" He admitted. "I've had to fight a dragon or two in this world as it is, I've scarcely met one that's friendly and I doubt that's changed in most other worlds either."
"A party?" He inquired. "You mean like those adventuring parties? I don't understand why they wouldn't want a healer" He remarked pointedly, quirking a brow. "A girl I work with is pretty handy as a healer and I have no idea what we'd do without her. The best potions can cost you a pretty gil, and having someone that can manage other ailments as well is always a must. So those people are mainly just idiots, and will probably be dead before long. Having a healer to watch your back is almost essential if you can get one."
But it was clear she was lost before she even said it, and he let out an amused sigh, an "of course" kind of sigh. Then she seemed to decide to deflect the discussion back to him, asking what he was doing in a forest.
"-Above- the forest" He corrected her, chuckling lightly. "We had just finished a job and were on our way back to Torensten to collect. We saw your situation and decided to drop in. Or well..."
He motioned to the dragon that was presently growling at a tree.

She listened quietly as Caius took it upon himself to elaborate on what he was talking about earlier, which Joanna was rather grateful for. It was when she heard the word "crystal", of course, that everything finally started to click together. "Oh! So your world has Crystals too, huh? Granted, that's the first time I've heard of them doing anything like that, but, it's nice finding a common ground. You're not the first person I've run into that came a from a world with them, after all."
She continued to listen, smiling at his response to her comment about the dragon. She realized after saying it that it might have come off as judgmental or overly negative, so she was glad that he took it in the spirit intended. Last thing she wanted to do was offend someone she just met with what, at the time, seemed like a harmless observation; it wasn't as though she was accusing him of anything. Either way, she nodded in agreement "Yeah no kidding...no offense to your friend here, but I still can't help but find it hard to believe..."
Nevertheless, the conversation shifted to her (lack of) luck in regards to finding a party to travel around with, and she quietly nodded in agreement with his comment. Finally, someone gets it. Though, from the sounds of it, he already had a healer in his group. Darn. Well, he might still let her join. For now, she wouldn't push it. If he offered, great. If not, then at least he seemed nice. If nothing else, may he could help her find her way through this forest and point her in the direction of some civilization.
As she listened to him explain himself, she nodded quietly. While she found it hard to believe that anyone could fall asleep while riding on the back of a flying beast, it would at least somewhat explain his...less than stellar entrance. What caught her attention was when he mentioned where he was going. "Torensten? Is that a town or something? If it isn't too far away, would you mind if I tagged along until we got there? I've been itching to get something to eat for a while now."
"Just the one, as far as I know. But that's only in the Kingdom of Lucis and the surrounding countries such as that ruled by the Fleuret family from Tenebrae, so it's very much possible there are others, far far away" He admitted. Or well, used to be ruled by the Fleuret family. Most likely, Tenebrae had been merged into the Kingdom of Lucis as well along with the other territories originally taken over by the Empire. But Caius wasn't sure, either, one thing he hadn't really been able to get into in the archives were current day politics. He didn't care that much about them at the time, so it made sense that he wouldn't really know them that well. He knew enough to know who owned what before the Ten Years considering he'd caught up on his history, but as far as the modern day went... He was still a little flat on knowledge there, and by the looks of it, he always would be.
She mentioned she had met others from other worlds with crystals, and he nodded his head. "As have I."
Faris came to mind, the pirate who could swap clothes and abilities on a dime as a result of the crystal's power. He was curious what other powers these crystals had, and if there were any that hadn't been destroyed here in Zephon. What powers could they hold? Perhaps something that would allow him to better do his job? It was a thought.
His attention though, was taken when Vordun suddenly decided to set the small tree in front of him on fire, and Caius quirked a brow.
"Vordun, what are you doing?" Caius remarked toward the dragon, who seemed quite proud of itself until the moment Caius had scolded it. "What did the tree ever do to you?" He asked, as he moved to douse the tree with a Blizzard spell. Vordun let out a few growls and grunts that could almost be interpreted as complaining, so Caius looked a bit more closely at the thing. By what he could see of what was left after Vordun had scorched it, it seemed someone had carved a face on the tree.
"So it looked at you funny" Caius retorted toward Vordun, chuckling lightly. Vordun responded with a snort, causing steam to emit from the lizard's nose. Caius then turned toward Joanna to answer her question.
"It's a town, aye. It's where my guild, the Dragonblades tend to operate from" He answered first. "You're free to come along until we get to town, it's faster on dragonback regardless."

This was admittedly a bit of a surprise. At least with Faris, the crystals from his world seemed to share some basic similarities with her own, even if their general functions were noticeably different. Bit from the sounds of it, the crystals in Caius' world were completely different altogether. Even if it was a different world from hers, she found it difficult to fathom only one crystal existed, or that they weren't tied to a specific element. The only thing that appeared to remain the same is that his crystal was a source of great power, same as hers and Faris'. It seemed the only difference is that she was the only one so far who wasn't able to directly tap into her crystal's power.
In spite of her confusion, she found all of this fascinating. How many other worlds were there that had different crystals with different functions? Where there any that were actually the same as her own world's crystals? As much as she disliked being stuck in this strange new world, she had to admit that all of this was rather excited. Getting to meet other people and learn about completely different worlds from her own; she could safely say she never would have expected anything like this to happen. She'd probably enjoy it a lot more were it not for the fact that her own memories had more holes in it than a wedge of swiss cheese.
She watched in a combination of amusement and bafflement as the dragon randomly decided to light a tree on fire. "...does he always do that?" She also watched as Caius proceeded to seemingly have a conversation with the dragon. Could he actually understand it? Was he just guessing based on the grunts and growls he made? Maybe they were just putting on a show for her. She had no idea what was going on, but but it was amusing. Regardless, as he went on to explain that Torensten was indeed a town, her interest was piqued when he went on to talk about his guild. "Ooh. A guild, you say? What kind of guild is it?"
"Not usually, though sometimes he gets a little moody" He answered truthfully when the woman would question Vordun's behavior. "As big as he is, he's still actually a fairly young dragon. So I guess you could call this his adolescent with attitude stage" He half-joked, chuckling lightly. Vordun seemed to turn to stare at him a moment, as if contemplating whether that was another insult or not. Caius had been learning lately that Vordun was far more intelligent than he had been giving him credit for, even being able to understand select things he was saying even if they were things Caius hadn't figured he would understand.
Truthfully, Caius was just guessing based on the dragon's body language and the sounds he made. He had been with Vordun long enough to identify this and that at least, though he wouldn't be able to understand him in full at any point most likely. But he was getting better at context cues, at least. Vordun seemed to understand Caius' speech more than Caius understood Vordun's to be truthful, but he was trying.
He was also curious about if the woman had met anyone outside of Faris with unique abilities granted by the crystals of their world. Caius always had an eye out for recruitment, after all. And while he had a very unique set of people at his side, finding more special people like that would mean more of them would be able to be out there helping people at one time. The woman than asked about his guild, and Caius smiled gingerly.
"The Dragonblades are a mercenary guild that specializes in honourable jobs, things that help people and benefit Serentestra at large" He explained. "We typically go after monsters terrorizing villages, people being harassed by bandits. We've put an end to kidnappings, hostage situations. A little while ago we were asked to check up on a village that hadn't been writing to a chap and it turned out the entire village had been locked up and replaced with bandits trying to lure people in, so we dispatched the bandits. We've got a... Rather unique group as well. A former military general who's my co-leader. A summoner who's summons resemble that of avatars of the gods, and a young lady who's paintings can literally come to life to fight at her side."
