Although she had no idea where she was or how she had ended up in this completely new world, Jo managed to find her way to what appeared to be a major city in whatever land she was in. There seemed to be a lot of trading going on, so, at the very least, she seems to have stumbled onto a major business hub of some sort. If nothing else, she might be to ask around and try to learn as much as she could about this place, though the question was how to approach doing such.
That said, she might come off as some crazy person if she went around asking what would otherwise be obvious questions. She could try faking amnesia, but she wasn't confident that she'd be able to keep the act up for very long. Besides all that, she was already beginning to stand out; not just from her pure and innocent appearance, but from her apparently doing a bad job of hiding how completely and utterly lost she was. At that point, any thoughts going through her head were interrupted by a loud growl from her stomach.
"...oh yeah...I guess I haven't had anything to eat since I've gotten here..." As she muttered to her self, she started looking around for any place that looked like it might serve food. But wait. Would the food here be the same as what she considers food back at home? Would she have enough Gil to buy some? Did they even take Gil here? "Ugh! Screw it...no point in worrying about it anymore..." This whole 'overthinking everything' business was tiring. She'd just have to find a place that serves food and hope for the best.
If they take Gil and she has enough, great. If not, she can explain that she's not from around here (understatement of the century, and not the least bit untrue) and see if there isn't anything she can work out with them. Realizing that she should have done this from the start, she let out an annoyed sigh. More than anything else at this exact moment, she wished she knew where the others were; or even if they also ended up in this strange world.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
No one had seen Bartz.
Faris had found his way to Provo on nothing more than a hunch. After he’d woken up in their rented room only to find that Bartz had wandered off, he’d set off into a wrathful search of the city, asking anyone he could find, searching high and low to no prevail. When Torensten turned up nothing, he’d wracked his head for the next best place to look, and that was Provo. So to Provo he went, all on the trail of an empty-headed boy who was more than happy to waltz head first into danger without any idea what he was doing.
”Have you seen a lad around here? About this tall, brown-hair, dressed in blue? His name is Bartz and he’s-...You, lass! Have you seen a man about this tall? Brown hair? Answers to Bartz if you call his name? He’s a bit thick-headed and-!” Faris let out a short, bothered breath as he was once again ignored on the street corner except for a few uncomfortable glances.
Lousy dullards! They wouldn’t stop if a poor lass was getting held up by brigands in the street! Faris scowled to himself and eyed the next few passerby with an almost hateful glower.
It was then that he noticed the girl.
She was a young looking blonde no older than seventeen all dressed up in white robes not too unlike his own as a white mage. She was laden with golden trim, a few ruffles, and a red stone attached to the base of her neck. Faris blinked at her, looking so out of place among the masses, and then noticed the way she moved, staring around with wild head movements and muttering to herself. She looked as lost as Faris had ever seen anyone, and with that innocent, doe-eyed look to her, she’d be a target to a bunch of ruffians by nightfall. Faris sighed watching her. It wasn’t like he was making much progress here anyway.
”Hey, lass! You there!” Faris crossed the street in purposeful strides, head-tilted as he approached her. ”Are you trying to get somewhere or are you just flitting about for the sake of it? I’ve learned these streets like the waves of the sea so I can guide you along if it suits you. Not much of a bother to me either way.”
Faris let out a short breath as he put a hand on his hip, appraising her. ”The name’s Faris. Captain Faris Scherwiz if a name be important to you. I’ve found my way across just about every corner of this world seeking out fiends and devils so if you need a turn in the right direction, I can give you a start.”

Well this was going well. Seemed most of the people here were either too busy or too self-absorbed to even give her the time of day. The few that didn't completely ignore her were still of little help, only giving vague answers to whatever questions she asked or outright telling her that they don't have time to bother with her. Well, whatever. From what little info she was able to gather, the world was called Zephon, and the city she was in was called Provo; not much, but it's a start.
After a bit more wandering aimlessly, she soon found herself actually being approached by someone. Listening to them speak and noticing their mannerisms, she couldn't but vaguely recall an encounter she and her friends had in their own world. A pirate captain of some sort. This person was infinitely nicer to look at though; in spite of her preference for women, this person actually made her heart skip a beat when she first laid eyes on him, if only for a second.
Beyond that, he wasn't really her type, in more ways than one.
When she heard his questions, she let out a sigh "Well, to be more precise, I'm still trying to figure out where here is. I woke up not far from here, with no clue how I ended up here, and barely any recollection my life before this. I have just enough of my memories to know that I was traveling with a few people, and that this is definitely not the world I came from...I don't even know if they're here." The more she spoke, the more she was starting to remember about her companions.
"Maybe you've seen them; one's a super-stoic guy in shiny armor with white hair...wouldn't know fun if it jumped up and started gnawing on his head. The others are a dandy who wears way too much red and constantly buys useless crap, and a gloomy elf who does nothing but read all the time. They're all pretty weird, to be honest...but they're not bad guys, I guess." Says the hot-blooded white mage who charges at enemies with a hammer.
As Faris introduced himself, she smiled in response. Finally, a friendly face. "And I'm Joanna Baltas...but please, everyone calls me 'Jo'. Pleased to meet you...and honestly, at the moment I just wanna find somewhere to eat and rest my legs...I've been walking around pretty much nonstop all day and my feet are killing me."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
The girl’s story was as familiar as the night sky. Couldn’t remember a thing. Just woke up in some wild place or another. Couldn’t tell you north from south or what lied between it. Faris sighed hearing it all again, shaking his head with a wary disappointment. As many times as he’d seen it, this never got easier to handle. He’d met friends lost bobbing among the waves of this world like castaways at sea. He’d met enemies who’d lash out at a simple helping hand, and he’d met plenty of faces that had already blended together without a name. Faris waited patiently, already planning out what to say next.
Aye, that’s a usual story not so out of place these days. I’m as struck by the whole ordeal as you, in fact. How about we sit down and talk it all over?
But once the expected story was out, she went on to a lead that he hadn’t expected at all. One of her friends was a stoic man in “shiny armor with white hair” who “wouldn’t know fun if it jumped up and started gnawing on his head.” Faris perked up at that, eyes bright as the pieces clinked together. He didn’t even wait for her to finish before crying out, ”The man in the armor, he’s not a knight is he? A Warrior of Light as he called himself? Aye, I’ve met a man just like that! An honorable man who wouldn’t know fear if death itself stared him in the eye! I owe him my life by now a few times over, I’d think, but I can’t say as to his name. He didn’t know himself. His head was as cloudy as a hurricane!”
Faris grinned to himself. If this girl knew the knight like she claimed then that was something to go on. Not that he could do a whole lot of good when he didn’t have a clue where the man could be now. Last he saw him, the man had been as driven as driftwood and nearly as hard to pin down. But that was still something, Faris thought. And if it ended with the both of them reuniting with that knight then Faris would count it as a net good.
”Aye, lass. I’ll pay for your food if you don’t mind it. And we can talk more about this friend of yours. Maybe together we can work out where he might have wandered off to.”

Understandably annoyed about being interrupted, Joanna got a tiny bit huffy at the older male, though her annoyance quickly evaporated when he proceeded to describe her companion better than she was capable of a moment ago. She had vague memories about them. Enough to remember her first impressions of them and know they're all good guys, but the finer details were incredibly fuzzy at best. That said, the more Faris described the so-called "Warrior of Light", the more she was beginning to remember. Not just about him, but the rest of her group. "Yes! That definitely sounds like him! Especially the part where he can't remember his own name...not that I'm having any luck remembering the names of the other two..."
It was annoying. Although she was remembering many small things by bits and pieces, her memories were still very much a total blank. Was this a result of coming here? It was sounding more and more like she was hardly the only one who'd come here, so did they lose all of their memories as well? And in "Wolly's" case, what happens when you barely have any memories in the first place? Still, as much as she was in the dark about everything else, she was at least better off than she was before. If the Warrior was here, then the Black Mage and Red Mage were probably here as well. At least she hoped so. If nothing else, though, it helped knowing she wasn't the only one here.
She was admittedly curious as to what the story was between them, especially the part about Faris apparently owing him his life "a few times over". But that could come later. Once she's gotten something to eat. Once she heard Faris' offer, she smiled. Far be it for her to turn down a free meal when someone's offering. "Thanks...I think I'll take you up on that. I'm not even sure if they take Gil here or not. Don't know how much help I'll be in figuring out where my friend went, though. Clearly, you know more about this place than I do."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
”You really are new, aren’t you? Just washed up this morning then?” Faris shook his head. ”Aye, they take gil. Though if it’s the same as you’ve got, I can’t say. How about you see for yourself once we’re both somewhere warm?” Faris pushed his hair back from his bandanna and started ahead of them down the street. ”Stay close behind, lass. I’m not one to lose in a crowd, but I’d not take chances around this lot.”
He led her forward down the busy market street. Everything was complicated here -- a little too loud, a little too busy. The city was alight with machinery that Faris still didn’t know the name of and that was nothing compared to the lands up north. It wasn’t fair to call those lands another world even -- Faris had been to other worlds, after all, and they had nothing on all the flashing lights and metal up there. But Provo, at least, he could understand if he really put his mind to it.
Lenna would have known more what to make of it than him -- or Krile even with all her scholarly intellect. But Faris had a skill that aced both of theirs and that was adaptability. He’d found a way to survive just about anywhere as long as that place wasn’t Sonora.
”You don’t know his name then either? That’s a shame. He’d’ve liked to hear it, I think.” Faris kept his pace slower than usual so she didn’t fall behind. He didn’t trust the types around here -- not lately at least -- and Faris would know. He’d been one of those types more often than not, and he knew an easy target when he saw one. ”One way or the other, you’ll need to get your bearings. I wouldn’t hold your breath for old friends, but going it alone won’t do you much good either. This world’s not the best at welcoming strangers.”
”Have you got any magic? A sword, maybe?” Faris glanced back at her doubtfully. The sword, he thought, was a rough bet but you couldn’t always just by appearances, could you? The crystals meant he could change his look every other hour if he fancied it, and no one would have pegged him as a mage until he donned the robes for it. Of course, he still wasn’t much of a mage even with the crystal’s help, but it was the thought of it that mattered.
”If that’s the way of it then you’ll have a better time. Most of us -- the ones that wash up here, I mean -- we’ve all got something special hidden in our sleeves. And most of us are strong enough to knock a behemoth upside the head if you get my meaning. Not everyone around here’s so thrilled to have us, but it makes us a good sight short of useless.”
Faris stretched his arms out over his head, cracking his neck as he rounded a street corner. ”That’s how it’s been for me anyway. If you want my advice, know your strengths, find a crew, and run with it. But that’s enough of that.” Faris stopped at the tavern door, arms crossed. He nodded towards it. ”Let’s get you taken care of.”

Joanna nodded quietly in response to Faris' question about her "washing up" in this world that morning. She still wasn't entirely sure how long she'd been here; a few hours at the very least, but she lost count of anything beyond that due to having spent most of her time until now wandering aimlessly in the outskirts. She encountered the occasional stray monster here and there, but none of them were anything she couldn't easily handle on her own. Of course, she wouldn't have been able to keep it up forever, so she was glad when she finally found a town.
She didn't have much trouble keeping up with Faris as he walked, offering his advice as they traveled through. A party other than the one she'd been traveling with...well, she could understand it, but it seemed hard to contemplate, even if she was having trouble remembering two out of three of them. But as much as she didn't like the thought of it, Faris was probably right. If this world was anywhere near as huge as the one she came from, then her allies could be pretty much anywhere. If they were here at all. At seemed the warrior was, at least.
As she mulled over that, she looked back to Faris as he asked her about whether she knew any magic or had any weapons. Initially, she couldn't help but be a bit baffled by the question, feeling like it should have been obvious just from one look at her. But the more she thought about it, it didn't seem as strange considering Faris was apparently from a different world than she was. And that's not even taking this world into account. Based purely on people's reaction, adventurers like her and Faris were hardly normal...at least compared to the other people here.
"Well, I'm a White Mage, so I'm limited to White Magic...which if you're unaware, consists mainly of healing and support spells. Great for keeping allies alive, but aside from a single line of spells that only affects undead, there's only one purely offensive spell available to us, and it's far too advanced for me to cast at my current level. In my world, there's also Black Magic, which is mainly offensive spells and weakening the enemy, and Red Magic, which mixes the two together, though their selection of spells are a bit more limited..."
Sometimes, she couldn't help but be a little jealous of the Black and Red Mages of her world. Granted, she took her role as a healer as seriously as one would hope, but still; it must be nice to be able to do things like shoot lightning or fire from her hands. Though that was mostly the tomboy in her talking. Despite lamenting her lack of offensive options when it came to spellcasting, she was nonetheless proud of how far she's come in her training as a White Mage. Either way, she continued "As for a weapon...well, it's no sword, but I've got this."
Raising her hand up, a mythril warhammer materialized in it, which despite its large size and her seemingly delicate frame, she appeared to have little trouble wielding it. "It was a gift from the church I was raised in; it's been blessed to be light enough for me to swing around easily, though, since I'm not exactly a paragon of physical strength, it's still not gonna do as much damage as Wolly can with a sword or an axe. Still great for catching any who assume I'm going to be an easy target off guard, though."
After that, she de-materialized her hammer, not wanting to make the native citizens any more wary than they probably already were, then continued to listen as Faris spoke about his time in this world and how adventurers like them aren't exactly popular among the natives of this world. She could definitely see that. Taking Faris' advice to heart, a small thought crossed her mind as they approached the tavern that he'd been leading her to. "...so...I don't suppose you've got any room for me on your "crew", would you?"

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
”A white mage, eh? I’ve never been much for white magic myself. It’s a healer’s art, and I don’t have the spirit for it. I’ve got a mighty respect for those that do. It takes a clearer head then I could ever manage.” Faris glanced at the girl. He should have guessed Jo’s talents in an instant with a getup like that. The white robes gave the game away.
”I bet you’ve dealt a few surprises in your day, knocking a devil upside the head when they think they’ve got you cornered. A woman has to hold her own, and the world won’t stand for it. You’ve got to fight everything you’ve got if you’re going it alone. There’s no other way about it.”
Faris looked the girl over. She had a fire in her, that was for sure, though it was hard to say how long it would burn. He’d seen them stamped out more times than he could count. In all likelihood, she’d end up back in the church she’d left, but he hoped she’d stick it through and come into her own. No matter which world he traveled to, not a single one of them gave an easy fight.
”My crew?” Faris tilted his head before bursting out in barking laughter. ”Aye, now that’s an offer! I’ve been needing a healer like you, but I’ll not have you throwing about your life so easily. Think the matter over. Stand on your two feet. Then I’ll take you in a wind’s breath.”
He pushed open the doors of the tavern and barged inside with a challenge in his eye. The place was a den of unsavory types from thieves to thugs to smugglers, and he caught eyes looking them over from every wall. Faris kept his chin high and met the gaze of every one of them until they were the first to look away. The message was clear -- mess with me if you want to risk your head. With the girl at his side, the same went for her.
”It’s not the most agreeable of places, but it’ll get you fed. I’d’ve kept you waiting searching anywhere higher.” Faris led her to a table and crossed his arms, head cocked to the side. ”I’ll grab you something worthwhile. Don’t go picking any fights until I’m at your back. With these types, you’ll find a knife through it before you can blink.”
He started off towards the front, put in his order, and waited with his arms crossed. A few men tried for small chat with him, and he offered it back in return. Where did you come in from? What’s your name? Haven’t got a sword, have you? Faris returned the volley with a sour look. Captain Faris, a world rougher than this, and you’ll see the wrong side of that sword if you cross me. Before long, Faris had two bowls of something with rice, beans, and a little meat on top, and he brought it back, placing it in front of the girl before he fell into the chair across from her. If any stares met them, he ignored them like they were nothing but gawking birds.
”That’s my end of the bargain. Now I’ll have answers for it. Where do you come from, and what do you know about that Warrior of Light?”
Post by Joanna Baltas on Jul 16, 2019 4:43:33 GMT -6
Ah, so he knew about White Magic after all. Guess she didn't need to explain it after all, but at least it was nice to know that their worlds apparently shared something in common. Either way, Joanna couldn't help but smile at her comment. And it was true. As much of a firecracker as she was, she always knew when to focus on the healing when it was needed the most, and proved to be fairly effective at it; even some of the priests at her church were impressed with how much raw talent the girl had in the healing arts.
It was a very underappreciated talent, and one that a lot of people seemed to take for granted. 'How hard can it be to just keep healing someone?', people would often ask. None of them had ever been in actual battles before; you have to keep track of not just your allies' heath, but the enemy as well. If you do nothing but focus on your allies, then it leaves you open to an attack from the enemy. Meanwhile, if you focus too much on where the enemy is and do nothing but try to avoid them, your allies suffer from the lack of support you're supposed to provide.
It's all about finding the right balance, and it's much easier said than done. Nevertheless, it was ingrained into her mind even before she had her first taste of a real battle, and she took to it like a fish to water once she finally did, even in spite of her impulsive nature and general urge to just smack the nearest monster with her hammer. She wasn't one to shy away from the front-lines, but she knew her limits, and knew when it was time to take her role as a White Mage seriously and let the actual fighters do what they do best.
She couldn't help but frown a little at Faris' response to her question about joining with him, though she could at least understand where he was coming from. It didn't make the rejection sting any less, but she understood it. So why did she feel like she'd just been spurned after confessing her love or something along those? It didn't help that the more she looked at Faris, the more she couldn't help but notice how handsome he was. 'Stop it, Joanna!' she mentally chastised herself. This wasn't the time to act like some smitten teenager.
Even if that was more or less exactly what she was.
Either way, she didn't say or do much as they made their way into the table inside of the tavern; even in her own world, she was used to standing out so the stares didn't bother her all that much. Even without Faris' comment, she could tell that the men here weren't exactly a pleasant bunch to be around. She looked around, pretending not to notice any of the less-than-savory looks she was getting or hear any of the mumbling from those wondering how "such a scruffy looking guy landed such a sweet girl".
She was fairly sheltered and a bit naive, but even she could tell what they were implying by that, and she managed to form enough of a poker face to not turn beet-red at the mere thought of it. While she wasn't completely against the idea, especially considering how nice he was being, she had more important things to worry about. As such, she just tried to push it all into the back of her mind. Luckily, a much-welcomed distraction came when Faris returned to the table with some food.
It didn't look like anything she'd ever eaten before, but she had to admit it looked and smelled good, so she dug in, and let out a soft squeal of delight after her first bite; a clear indication that she enjoyed the food. Then came the questions, to which she nodded. Fair enough. "Well, to start with, the world I'm from doesn't have a name like this one appears to...or, if it does, I've never been told what it is. I've always just known it as "the world". As for myself, I grew up in a large kingdom called Cornelia...was raised by one of the churches there."
Giving Faris a moment to register what she said, she continued. "As for Wolly...there's honestly not much I can tell you about him specifically...at least nothing you probably don't already know. We met, ironically, just as I was getting ready to set out on my own as an adventurer. He and I, along with two others had each gotten a managed to come into possession of one of the Crystals in our world; I had the Crystal of Wind, which was given to me as a gift by the head priest before I left, and he had the Crystal of Water."
Another pause "Though, due to his amnesia, I have no idea how he came into possession if it...nor do I have any idea of where he's from or what he was doing before he came to Cornelia. There were two more; the Crystals of Fire and Wind...but...for some reason, I'm drawing a total blank on who possessed them. I know they were there, and I can clearly remember traveling with then, but my memory suddenly gets extremely fuzzy when I try to remember them as individuals...frankly, it's getting annoying..."
She let out a sigh, the irony of her situation not lost on her. "He was the biggest mystery out of the four of us, yet he's the only one I have a clear memory of...figures, right?" After a sigh, she continues. "Either way, turned out the crystals were part of an ancient prophesy, and it became abundantly clear that fate had something in store for us, so we decided to travel together...and that's about all I can clearly remember. I have some vague recollections of the things we did as party, but most of them are really hazy at best..."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris nodded at the woman’s words. It was a familiar story. A strange world, a strange kingdom, a head full of holes about any of it. It was all about as predictable as the sunrise, but as she mentioned the crystals, Faris sat straight up until he was practically hanging off his seat. ”The crystals! Aye, he gave talk about them, but I’d never heard the rest!” It was a strange thing to grasp on, but his heart raced nonetheless.
If they both knew the crystals then that meant their worlds had something in common. Could it be they were connected somehow? It might’ve been the clue they needed to figure this whole mess out.
”I’m a warrior of light, same as you! No prophecy on my end, but the crystals took me all the same. I’ve got the fire crystal myself.” Faris pulled the ruby stone from his pocket and held it up to show her. It glittered in the light of the window. ”Told us to keep the crystals stable. Didn’t do much good -- they all broke in the end -- but we took on the devil the crystals let loose once it was all over and done with. Turns out they were a seal for some villain lurking in the depths.”
The thought of Exdeath had him stifling a shudder. It was that laugh that stuck with him most, booming with the bass of thunder. What came out of the Rift was a sight best served for nightmares.
”The crystal’s what gave you power then?” Faris leaned in with a spark in his eye. ”It must’ve been a mighty shock to hear you’re set to take on the world. The crystals had lousy taste on my part, but you look the type to take it in stride. When lives are on the line, there’s nothing to do but fight.”
Faris shoved his crystal shard back where it came from and leaned against his chair, arms crossed. ”Did you meet your fate, then? Sounds like a lot of weight on your shoulders.”
