II. PERSONA
As the captain of a pirate ship, Faris wasn't exactly trained for polite society. Blunt, crass, and strong-willed, she's used to making her own path regardless of public opinion or the rules of law. When it comes to her own self-interest, Faris doesn't mind pillaging, looting, or kidnapping to her heart's content. Despite her royal blood, she isn't particularly interested in an easy, stable life. She'd rather work for her survival -- and by work, she means steal.
Though she's grateful to have been saved from the sea by her pirate family, growing up among murderers and thieves wasn't easy. As a child, she was viewed as a little girl -- innocent, defenseless, and weak. This gave her a mean edge and a determination to prove herself. Now she dresses as a man to avoid such labels and any awkward assumptions that might come with them. When she isn't barking orders to her crew, she's working with them herself. She's a hands-on kind of pirate who wouldn't be caught dead fleeing from danger. What kind of man would she be if she couldn't even handle her own fights, after all?
Despite her rough exterior (and mostly rough interior), Faris does have her own sense of morality. She doesn't particularly take pity on strangers, but she would interfere in large-scale atrocities like, say, the end of the world. Further, if someone she knows is in danger, she'll throw her life on the line to protect them. She's loyal to her friends and crew and would never waver from that trust. It's these bonds that keep her in line.
Finally, there is the awkward issue of her gender. While she prefers to be referred into in the male, it isn't exactly the end of the world if someone should discover the truth. Beyond keeping the secret from her pirate crew (for reasons of respect and safety), she really couldn't care less who knows. However, she has always felt more comfortable with the masculine as shows of her femininity do nothing but embarrass her. Though she has been forced to wear a dress and act a princess from time to time, it feels out of place, wrong, and a little mortifying. As such, Faris would much prefer to remain androgynous. Why should gender matter to a world-saving fighter, anyway?

III. HISTORY
Faris was born under the name of Princess Sarisa Scherwil Tycoon. She was the oldest daughter of King Alexander Highwind Tycoon and was loved dearly. However, when a storm came in during a flight on the family wind drake, the young princess was tossed from the dragon's back and into the roaring sea. Her parents lost her in the storm and grieved her apparent death. Unbeknownst to them, the young girl was miraculously found floating in the water by a band of pirates. They pulled her onboard their ship and, without any idea where she came from, proceeded to raise her as one of their own. When asked her name, the young girl was still unable to speak properly and responded, "Farifa Scherwif." Thus, she was renamed "Faris Scherwiz."
Despite her heritage, Faris grew to idolize the pirates' determination and courage. Even as a child, she tried her best to help them when she could. She worked hard while at sea and very determinedly looked the other direction at the pirates' more indecent actions. For her, the pirates' weren't a simple band of thieves and occasional murderers. For Faris, they were her saviors from the storm. With nothing but a pendant to hint at her true heritage, she embraced them as her new family and the open sea as her home. She learned to love the salty spray of water on the wind and the subtle sway of ship decks beneath her feet. She emulated the pirates' vulgar tenacity and hated being called "girl." By the age of ten, she was already swearing and drinking with the best of them.
As she grew older, however, the issue of her gender became harder to ignore. Suddenly, her femininity was not only a sign of weakness to her pirate companions, but also a possible danger. Not long after hitting puberty, Faris suddenly became the target of several advances. Raunchy jokes, scandalous stories, and outrageous passes that she had once found hilarious were suddenly made at her expense. Faris heard their message loud and clear: there was only one role for women on a pirate ship. Faris grew to hate her gender and found the changes of her body not only revolting, but horrifying. By the age of fourteen, she'd decided to do away with it all. She started binding her chest, masked the tone of her voice, and demanded that she be referred to as a man.
This order became a lot easier to enforce the following year. When the ship was caught in a malicious wind and thrown into a whirlpool, Faris was thrown overboard by the force. The crew took her for dead, but unknown to them, the whirlpool was actually caused by a sea dragon. The sea dragon helped her back out of the water, and afterwards, Faris demanded that the sea dragon be rewarded with half of their stock of meat. Delighted, the sea dragon began following their ship and would often emerge from the water to see Faris whenever she was on deck. Not wanting to argue with a ten ton sea monster, the pirates declared Faris captain of their ship.
As captain, Faris developed a certain charisma and a way with giving out orders. She used the sea dragon (who she had named Syldra) to carry the ship no matter where the winds may blow. She also used her power to quell any talk of her actual gender, and as pirate crews often have a low retention rate, soon there were few who knew the truth. With Syldra at her side, Captain Faris Scherwiz commanded her men as a courageous and authoritative leader.
Five years after taking over as her ship's captain, Faris caught a group of three wanderers who had sneaked into her hideout to steal her ship. She responded appropriately and threw them into the brig until she learned the identity of one of the would-be thieves: Princess Lenna Tycoon. She planned to hold the princess for ransom until she noticed the girl's unusual pendant -- a mirror image of her own. Intrigued, Faris offered to take the group to their intended destination, the Wind Shrine, and accompanied them in order to learn more.
At the Wind Shrine, Faris learns of the disappearance of King Tycoon just as Tycoon's wind crystal shatters. The four closest to it (Faris, Lenna, Bartz, and Galuf) are chosen by the crystals to become the Warriors of Light and are each given the essences of each crystal. Faris is granted the power of the fire crystal for her remarkable couragel. With these powers and the shards of the crystal, the four were given the ability to wield great strength and magic with ease. As they journeyed the world to protect the remaining crystals, they came across more shards and gained more power.
During their journey, Faris began to suspect that Lenna was her sister. Over time, the truth was revealed and Faris came to understand the King of Tycoon as her father just before his death at the hands of the now-freed Exdeath. Though she speaks with Lenna on the matter, they decide to hold off their reveal of Faris' identity until after Exdeath is dealt with. Since Exdeath has left the world on a meteor, they do the same in order to find him.
The group pursues Exdeath for some time in order to stop his evil plans. Eventually, they learn of his intention to destroy both worlds' crystals and bring all life into the Void. Once all of the crystals have shattered, the group journeys into the void themselves to stop him. However, even with Exdeath gone, the process cannot be reverted. The four use their powers to resurrect the crystals and bring order to the world.
Upon Faris' return, she is offered a position ruling Tycoon at her sister's side as queen. While Faris tries this dramatic change in life style for some time, she can't stand the quelling of her freedom and the niceties of royal life. She eventually returns to her pirates to rule as their captain once more. She does a substantially less amount of pillaging from Tycoon now and Queen Lenna chooses to look the other way from her transgressions.
