Joanna was pleasantly surprised at Faris' reaction when she brought up the Crystals, especially the part where he said that he was a Warrior or Light from his world. Apparently, however, the circumstances were slightly different. And then there was his question about the Crystal giving her her power; she could only assume she meant her gift as a White Mage. "Well...it seems our versions of Crystals are slightly different...ours didn't empower us in any way, for one thing...we were simply destined to come into possession of them..."
It was strange. The more they spoke the more she began remembering. Her memory was still full of holes, but little by little, they were starting to fill up. "Right, I remember now...see, there were two sets of Crystals in our world; the small ones we each received, and larger ones hidden in caves and shrines which had an effect on nature. Elemental fiends were draining energy from the larger crystals, and it fell upon us to stop them and restore light to the larger crystals by recharging them with the smaller ones..."
She paused to let Faris process that, then continued. "As for my powers, no...they were my own from the beginning. I'm guessing it must be different where you come from, but in my world, people are born with a talent for a specific type of magic, and that's all they can learn. As far as anyone is aware, there's no way for a White Mage to learn Black Magic, or vice versa...of course, Red Mages are a thing, but they're pretty rare. Anyway, even among those a natural talent for a type of magic, some realize it sooner than others..."
"I don't mean to brag, but it turns out I was extremely gifted in White Magic...it's probably part of how and why I ended up becoming a Warrior of Light. It was the same with Wolly; there were plenty of warriors in our world, but he was exceptionally skilled among all of them, even with his amnesia...I still can't remember them, but I can only assume the same of our other two allies." She smiled "Anyways...yeah...I won't say it wasn't intimidating, to suddenly have such a tremendous responsibility thrust upon us, but we still pushed on regardless."
Upon hearing the last question, Joanna blinked "...I'm not sure...the last thing I remember is defeating the fourth and final elemental fiend and returning the light to the last crystal...oh yeah! We also met with Bahamut and received powerful upgrades...though, as painful to admit as it is, it seems that upgrade was somehow stripped from me as I came here...I can only guess something here canceled out Bahamut's magic, because I'm suddenly back to just being a normal White Mage..." Joanna let out a sigh.
The more her memory's started coming back, the more she found herself not liking the situation she was in. "Anyway...beyond that, I don't recall anything else...if we did anything beyond restoring the crystals, it's a total blank, but I can't shake the feeling that there ended up being more to our journey than that..." It was official; this "amnesia" thing was getting old. Though, now she at least had an idea of what the Warrior of Light was going through. She at least had some of her memories; she could only imagine what it must be like to not even remember your own name.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Destined? Faris blinked. Then they thought themselves certain to do it? Chosen to do it? Without a single say otherwise? Those were lousy prospects though Faris wasn’t about to say it. It seemed in her nature to grasp a higher calling, and it wasn’t his place to call her out on it. Not until he’d gotten a few drinks into him at least.
”You were all called to the task then. The best at what you do all primed for the course. Aye, that must have come as a relief. We were picked from the sea and thrown together without a thought about it. If there was any destiny in it then the gods have an odd sense of humor.” Looking back on it, the whole series of events still felt absurd. Out of all the heroes and all the knights in the world, the crystal had chosen a wandering idiot, a pirate, and an old amnesiac. Lenna was the only one with any business dealing with crystals. The rest of them felt like the desperate last picks of a captain run ashore.
”The summon?” Faris raised an eyebrow. He hadn’t thought much of Bahamut before, but apparently those ethereal creatures had some kind of power to bestow of their own. Faris had mostly seen them as a means to particularly devastating spells. ”A shame you didn’t keep it with you.”
Faris nodded slowly to himself. ”That’s not such a strange turn of events. Seems there’s only a handful of us that have our heads intact. The rest are all scrambled -- maybe from falling into the void that stranded us here. I’m looking for someone like that. One of the other warriors, and he can’t remember a thing. Not what we did, not his own power, not me…” Faris gave a sad laugh. ”I’ll wrangle him back and knock some sense into him. No matter what he says about it.”
The mention of Bartz soured at his mood, and he banished the thought before it could start a storm in his heart. Instead, he tilted he leaned back with a cross of his arms. ”What are you looking for? Your friends? That knight? Or just a place to stay?”

Admittedly, Joanna knew she was probably laying it on a bit thick by saying they were "destined" to come into possession of the Crystals, but at the same time, she couldn't think of any other explanation. Four people, each with a crystal that was related to an ancient property that would later prove to be vital to saving the world in hand, and they each just so happened to end up in the same place at the same time right when the kingdom was in the middle of a crisis that only they could deal with, and would eventually lead into many other quests of equal importance.
There was no way in hell that was a coincidence; at least that's what Joanna believed. It was as though fate itself bent over backwards to ensure it would happen. Nevertheless, since Faris elected not to say what he was clearly thinking, Joanna chose not to bring it up any more than she already had. Whether destiny guided their hands or it really was the most contrived coincidence in the history of literally anything, there was no denying one thing; it was a good thing it all happened, or else their world would have been doomed.
When she spoke about Bahamut, Faris' reaction confused her a bit "Eh?...well...I don't know what a "summon" is, but he was the leader of a race of peaceful dragons we found in an underground cave. In exchange for some treasure located in an abandonned citadel, he used his magic to give us an exceptional boost in power. In particular, I gained access to a lot of high-end White Magic spells that were, until that point, too advanced for me to be able to cast. It was nice to finally have access to an offensive spell that actually affects creatures other than zombies..." She let out a soft sigh.
She then listened quietly as Faris went on to explain his own situation with one of his friends, and how they apparently didn't remember anything about what they did before coming to this world. She could tell from the way he spoke that it was breaking his heart; she could only imagine. To finally meet a familiar face, only for them to not remember you or what you did together. She couldn't remember who her other two allies beside the Warrior were, but at least she remembered that they existed; if nothing else, she hoped that she'd remember them if she ever came face-to-face with them.
Either way, as she took in Faris' last question, she let out a sigh "Well...of course I'd like to meet back up with them. Though...with no clue where I am are no hints of where they might be located, I might as well stumble through a dark cave with no light source in trying to find them. So...for now, I'm thinking that inn is sounding pretty nice right about now..."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Despite the crystals, Joanna’s world was a sight different from Faris’. He listened with his arms crossed, noting off everything she said mostly for the knight’s sake rather than his own. Faris had vowed that their paths would cross again, and he wanted something to offer the man once they did. There was nothing more valuable to an amnesiac than memories.
”A dragon king, eh?” It seemed unlikely even to him, but then again, there were details of his own world that would have had the girl scratching her head. He’d learned to take it in stride. ”If it worked for you then that’s quite the boon. A shame about your power though.”
Faris’ foot tapped under the table. ”I’ve met the other Warrior, but it’s been a time since then. At least two seasons if memory serves. I’ve not a clue what he’s been up to or where he’s been. He was in a slump last I saw. I wanted to stay with him but…”
But the warrior hadn’t wanted it back. Faris wondered if the knight had managed to atone for the mistakes that Faris only vaguely understood.
”It’s a hard thing, landing here, and even harder getting on your feet. There’s not one of us who hasn’t struggled to keep our heads afloat. There’s not much I can do, but I can get you started.” Faris rifled through his pocket, found his coin purse, and winced at the lack of weight inside. He couldn’t afford it -- he knew that -- but he couldn’t let this poor girl stumble about without it either. Faris couldn’t handle a parter yet, but he could do this at least.
Faris pulled it out, careful not to let its meager contents clink together and give him away, as he took a handful and slid it across the table at her. ”That should do it for a week at least. Keep your eyes open for anywhere like this and stay clear. You’ll find work posted on the west side of town. The world could use a healer like you.”
Something in him sank as he shoved the now substantially lighter pouch in his pocket. Faris would manage even if it meant falling back on less than tasteful habits. This girl reminded him a little of Lenna. Faris doubted she’d ever resort to intimidation or theft.
”Most of us you can spot from a mile away. Outlanders, they call us. Nearly all of us’ll help you if you ask for it, but don’t trust everyone you meet. There are devils dragged here just the same as the rest of us. Not many, but I’ve heard tell of them.”
From Chaos. From the knight. There were still too many questions left to answer. Why were they here? Where was this? How? But it did no good to ask what he couldn’t solve and so Faris shoved the questions to the back of his mind and tried to drown them for good.
Faris leaned forward. ”If your knight’s here then there’s a good chance the others are too. It took ages to find a familiar face, but I did just as I'd lost hope for it. Keep your head high, and your paths will cross in time.”
Words he could use right about now. Faris smirked wryly. Sometimes, the best advice came from your own better mind.
”Joanna,” he repeated. ”The White Mage of Light. I’ll pass along the message if I find any of them. You do the same for me. The lout’s name is Bartz. He’ll crop up about anywhere there’s trouble.” He looked her straight in the eye. ”Deal?”

Joanna listened quietly as Faris talked about her own encounter with the warrior, though one detail in particular caught her attention. "W-wait...two seasons? As in around seven or eight months?...wait, so if you met him that long ago, then why am I only just now arriving here? I mean...yeah, my memory is full of holes, but we'd barely traveled together for a month and a half...and I definitely remember us traveling together before coming here...so...how..." At this point, she just gave up. She knew that trying to make sense of any of this would just lead to more questions and headaches. Letting off an annoyed grunt, she was ready listen to anything Faris might say. Otherwise, she gave up.
Moving on, she blinked as Faris pulled out a pouch, wondering what was inside of it. She didn't have to be curious for long, though. Noticing how discreet he was being in attempting to give this to her, she was just as discreet about accepting it. Enough money for a week; hopefully enough for her to find her footing in this strange world and find some ways of making some coin of her own. She felt conflicted. On one hand, she knew she would need it. She had no more than a few coins to her name, and she wasn't even sure if it'd be accepted here. On the other hand, the look on Faris' face made it clear he was going to be hurting for cash because of this.
Despite her initial temptation to deny the offer, however, she chose instead to not dishonor his generosity by trying to act "humble" and not accept it. Quietly placing the coin into her pocket as not to draw any more attention than they already were, she smiled softly and nodded. "Thank you...hopefully, when we meet again after this, I'll be in a position to repay you." She distinctly made a point of emphasizing the "when" as she spoke. Call it a hunch; call it woman's intuition. Either way, she had a feeling this wouldn't be the last time she'd meet this man. And despite them still being together at this exact moment, she was already looking forward to whenever that would be.
She listened quietly to Faris' last bits of advice, taking it to heart. She still had no idea how she ended up in this place, but she figured it'd be stupid not to listen to someone who has far more experience in dealing with this place. Lastly, as she mentioned her friend once more, giving a name and brief description, she nodded "Deal...if I see him, I'll let him know he's got a friend looking for him. And if you do see Wolly, tell him Jo said to take care of himself. Hopefully, when we meet up again, I'll be able to say I was able to the same for myself."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
”Aye.” Faris stood, pushing his chair back behind him. The girl was nearly finished with what he’d bought her, and she’d taken his gil just like he’d asked. His stomach churned as he saw it disappear into the girl’s pocket, but there was relief in it too. It would’ve been a blow on his pride to turn it away. It wouldn’t have done either of them any good.
”I’ll walk you back to the street once you’re done. Gotta make sure you get out of this with that gil intact. This lot would steal it away in a breath.” Faris crossed his arms waiting for her to finish before he nodded towards the door and started out.
Here was another lost soul chewed up and spit out from the sky. When had Faris grown to expect it? It felt like ages since he’d washed ashore.
Once they’d made it back to the main road, he stopped and turned to her. She was young -- that was for certain -- with a heart too soft to fight the current. Should he have brought her along? Maybe if he’d had a ship. Or a place to stay. Or money that wasn’t speckled with blood. As it was, their paths weren’t meant to align -- not now at any rate.
”You keep your back straight and your head high,” he said. ”This isn’t your church. This world will grind you into the earth if you let it.” He shook his head. Why did he care so much for this girl he’d hardly met? Maybe she reminded him of Lenna. Maybe, in some distant way, she reminded him of himself. He’d had to claw his way through the waves just to stay afloat. He knew what it was to find himself adrift.
”Our paths will cross again. I can feel it.” He looked her head on with almost a challenge in his eye. ”You’ll show me how strong you’ve gotten, aye? I’ll want to see a fire in you fit for a warrior.” Faris laughed. ”Maybe then I’ll have you along. A mighty crew I’d have with you on board.”
There wasn’t anything more to give her than that. A meal, some gil, and advice. It was more than he’d had at any rate.
”I’ll be on my way then. And if you see Bartz, tell him he’s an air-headed lout for running out on me.”

She wasn't surprised that Faris couldn't offer an answer to her question. Frankly, nothing about this place seemed to make any sense. Or at least, nothing in regards to how and when she got here. From what she could tell, everything else seemed pretty standard compared to her own world. Of course, she had no idea how wrong she'd end up being, but that was beside the point at this moment. At the very least, this world didn't come off as anything she wouldn't be able to handle. She wasn't sure what she would do though. Maybe she'd seek out a church somewhere. Even if it wasn't the one she went to, if nothing else, it might help to learn about this place's history and religion.
It wouldn't be too difficult. She spent her entire life studying. The only thing she didn't know was where to start looking. And she had a good feeling that no one here would care enough to point her in the right direction. Her new friend included, if she was forced to guess. He didn't exactly strike her as the religious type, but that was okay. The generosity and advice he'd given her was more than enough for her to trust him. As they walked, and Faris gave one piece of advice and encouragement, she nodded quietly. She might just be a white mage, but lord knows she had plenty of fight in her. It remained to be seen how long that would last, but it was there.
And so, she listened to Faris' request about Bartz. Frankly, the message she was asked to give him made her wonder just what kind of relationship they had, but she figured it wasn't her place to pry. So she'd deliver it as is, should she end up stumbling upon him at any point. Once the two of them fully parted ways, Joanna let out a sigh. Truth be told, she'd be lying if she said she wasn't nervous. There were a lot of things she could do right now, and she had no idea where to start. But for the time being, there was one thing she was sure of. She needed to get away from this place and find somewhere a little less unsavory to rest. She could figure out the rest after that.
In the months that would follow, perhaps Faris would catch wind of the rumors about a young girl who wore white robes and wandered around, helping those in need and offering her healing services. She never directly stated that she was charging for her assistance, yet everyone seemed more than willing to part with some Gil to thank her for her help. Those who couldn't pay would offer some other modest gift; eventually, she just learned to roll with it. It wasn't easy, but little by little, the young girl was starting to find her place in this world. And though she was mostly just living day-to-day, one thing was clear; she wasn't letting this world get the better of her anytime soon.
