Final Fantasy Adventu is a roleplaying forum inspired by the Final Fantasy series. Images on the site are edited by KUPO of FF:A with all source material belonging to their respective artists (i.e. Square Enix, Pixiv Fantasia, etc). The board lyrics are from the Final Fantasy song "Otherworld" composed by Nobuo Uematsu and arranged by The Black Mages II.

The command came calm, yet incredibly firm and blunt as Caius stepped out the backdoor of the house. His expression was of stone, yet his gaze was piercing. "You're enjoying this far too much. It's written all over your face. Ease up on him, only use as much force is as necessary" Caius advised as the larger man stepped forward and pulled the elderly gentleman upwards, quickly wrapping his arm around his shoulder when he started flailing and holding on tightly.
"Vordun" Caius commanded calmly toward the drake, who responded to the man's flailing with a loud roar that quickly stopped him in his tracks. The man slumped over, and his flailing ceased. "Better" Caius responded, before grabbing restraints from his pack using his free hand and ensuring that the gentleman was bound.
Before long, the woman from the door re-appeared, with soldiers. Caius strode forward and brought out the collar that had been on the woman's neck earlier, now damaged from what seemed to be the control area being crushed. "This collar was around her neck. He bought her as a slave from a bandit group called The Original Sin that kidnapped her from her home in Sonora. I know from firsthand experience that the collar restricts your abilities, though by her testimony, it sounds as though they have also upgraded it with magic to restrict movement as well, should the person exert too much as if to run. He's been working her ragged unpaid and against her will for some time now" He explained to law enforcement, who turned to the woman that then confirmed his story.
"I've managed to remove the collar first by destroying the control area which then unsnaps the restraint on it, before pulling off. He apparently told her that trying to remove it would kill her, so I took the precaution."
As law enforcement left with the nobleman and the "serving woman", Caius turned then to Declan.
"You did well, thank you for that. Even if you do need to be more careful with your methods" He pointed out. "Does my report to the soldiers suffice for explaining the situation, or did you have questions?"
He certainly hoped so. He could admit that he was a little uncomfortable with the idea of telling her, on account that she might be upset. But he supposed Yuna had a point. "I hope you're right" He spoke softly. Celes had been a general, after all. She understood more than most having to do what was necessary. And Caius hadn't exactly been slow with the kill either, he had done it fairly quickly to alleviate suffering. More than Darlene deserved, if he was being honest. But it was one of those little signs that even in the rage he had flown into, he had still been himself in some respects. Yet that realization also made him realize that in some respects, he had also known exactly what he was doing. Well, yes and no. It was... Complicated.
"I'd like to think she will. She's always been understanding" He spoke. "But I've also never done something like this before since I've been here."
He'd flown off the handle once in Celes' presence, but... He had been a completely different person back then. And that was something that both Caius and Celes understood. The Caius now was not the Caius from back then, and for the Caius now to do that... It gave him pause. It made him wonder.
Yet he couldn't bring himself to regret what he did. He tried, he did. But he knew that while perhaps the means might not have justified it... As cruel as it was to say, Darlene needed to die. Not just to protect Vordun, but to protect others as well. How many more people would have suffered if she had broken out once more and hurt more people? If Caius had known she would go on to do that, and had still spared her... Would those following deaths have been on him? Would he have been able to forgive himself if that had happened?
God, this whole thing was just so confusing.
Luckily the subject changed. Caius didn't answer the comparisons of the lieutenants and leader to themselves directly, he didn't want to think of that. His answer instead poked a hole in it, as if to distance himself from the comparison.
"Celes is as much the leader as I am, regardless of how we each accomplish our role."
He didn't deny it exactly. But it was that sort of unspoken "Yes, but..." sort of thing. Either way, he was curious about what sort of escort job she was doing, but he supposed he could ask along the way. Seeing as...
"Celes is presently in Provo, by her last letter to me. I'd be happy to accompany you until we reach Provo, if you would have me" He offered. "I can't offer Vordun's aid at the moment though. I don't want to strain him right now. I think he needs a little rest before he starts taking passengers again."
But she was right. This had to stop. They had to deal with the other lieutenants and quickly. Especially now that they had kicked the hornet's nest.
This had been a game. And Caius had been wholly aware that it was a dangerous one to play. Whether it was clear or not, both sides were playing a game and the jury was still out on just who had won. Caius' moves to clue Celes in on what was going on didn't seem to be going well, but Caius had also made moves on his own to further their side of the game either way. He had learned from his mistakes of trusting people like Kuja and Aerith, learned to play this game after the incident with Darlene. Perhaps he was a little paranoid... But it had given him the foresight to make moves such as this. Now the question became as to whether the move would be a decisive one.
Caius hesitated to drink the tea, but only a moment. He trusted Celes. If he were to fall from poison, no matter how potent he trusted her to be able to get on it and deal with it quickly. It was risky, but he needed to follow through on this if his suspicions were to be confirmed. But the green color didn't belong to any tea he had ever heard of. It was either poisoned, or spiked with something else entirely. Something that he hoped Celes could heal.
He was putting an awful lot of faith in her, but he had been doing so for a long time now. No need to start second guessing her now. So Caius, when ensuring the others were drinking, did so as well. He noticed right away the small smirk that spread across the lips of the older man as Caius took a big glug of it. It didn't taste different from any old tea. It wasn't the type of tea he'd ordinarily take, but tea was tea. He smiled gingerly as he placed down the mug.
"Good tea" He remarked casually. "Thank you."
The old man, for the slightest of moments, had a look on his face that Caius saw to be the slightest little crack. Concern. He saw concern. But he wiped it away quickly like a master as he slowly nodded his head, and spoke ever slower. "Indeed" He responded. "Anything for a humble guest. My lady, you... Are sure you don't want any?" He asked Celes as he turned to her, his hesitation making Caius wonder. Was he stalling? Why would he be stalling? Caius looked to Sue then, giving her a curious glance. "Miss Sue, you've been rather quiet" He spoke up, perhaps as if wanting to see if she would break.
But Sue responded by falling over.
Caius' eyes widened as he reached forward to catch her as she fell forward. "Hey, hey!" Caius called out, and the older man stood from his chair slowly as Caius scooped up the fallen woman in his arms. Caius knew full well what had happened, but he kept up the facade just a little longer. Just a little bit longer to gauge the terrain. He watched the man from the corner of his eye, in case he tried to attack. Caius was already set to summon his sword and attack the moment he saw even the slightest sign, and he knew that by now, Celes would know to do so as well.
But then the woman, Sue's complexion began to suddenly shift. Her perfect porcelain skin began to darken as scars began to adorn it. What once resembled a beautiful, fair-faced young woman with cute little dimples had shifted into the look of a battle-hardened, older woman, somewhere in her mid to late 30s. The scar across her eye that likely had set her blind was the dead giveaway to Caius before anything else. Caius swore loudly and his brown pupils shrank as he suddenly dropped her in surprise, unintentionally letting her crash to the floor roughly as he backed away.
"What the hell...?" Caius trailed off in horror at the form before him, before looking to the older man. The older man merely shook his head.
"Don't play stupid with me, boy. You know full well what's going on. And I know what you did."
All around them, the house began to shift. The walls, homey and warm if not a little worn, turned black as cobwebs began to appear where paintings, lamps and wall decorations had once adorned. The rough but charming little abode had turned into a building that looked as though it had been abandoned for months, and Caius noticed evidence of recent damage from fire and physical slashes as well. The only real decoration that wasn't covered in cobwebs and dust were the little torches scattered around the room, which dimly lit the ramshackle, deserted wreck around them. And its inhabitants. The older man himself had also changed. His skin was almost grey in color, and he himself had gone from looking perhaps in his 60s, to... Well, Caius didn't want to say a bag of bones, but there wasn't many other terms that could come close to accurately describing the devil that stood before him.
The man sneered as he held out a hand, a fireball beginning to erupt between his fingers. "So, did you like my little masterpiece? Though, I do have to ask... What gave it away?"
Caius held out a hand as his gunblade materialized in his hand, and he could hear Celes more openly preparing her magic as well. Good. If she was aware of what was going on, or at least enough to know they were in danger... They might stand a chance. Hearing footsteps, Caius knew who they belonged to. The same goons he'd been keeping an eye on from the start. He sidled back a bit to stay close to Celes, not wanting to risk being knocked out of her range. If they stayed together, they would be better able to combine their strength despite the numbers disadvantage. He knew a fight was coming... But he didn't fire yet. If they weren't attacking yet, then there was time to find the best opportunity... And prepare.
"Cel, two behind" Caius spoke bluntly toward Celes "From the square, by the looks of them. Would recommend ice magic. Worked before" He added, ignoring the old man's question. One of the chef-hat wearing bandits sneered as he pointed a firearm at the back of Caius' head, and the older man frowned as he looked to the bandits behind them.
"You know these two?" The older man asked the two, a scowl beginning to protrude from his brow. "So I have you two idiots to blame. I said stay out of sight. I'll deal with you later"
The two bandits lowered their heads slightly. "Yes, Charon."
"Charon?" Caius inquired curiously, looking to the man. That name was familiar. It had been on the files that Caius had swiped from their camp after...
Shoot.
"Watch the old guy" He told Celes quickly as he tried to hide the fact he was reeling from the realization of just how bad this was. "Priority threat. Extremely dangerous."
And to say this just got really bad was an understatement. Caius thought back to the magic user they had encountered on the first job they took Relm on. If this man had tutored them, and was capable of all of this as well... Just how powerful was he?
"I am" Charon responded with a smirk. "And if you know who I am... Then you must be the one who killed Darlene. You've caused us a lot of trouble... But I suppose it doesn't ma-"
Caius didn't let him finish. He'd already grabbed the barrel of the gun being pointed at him and lurched the bandit forward just as Charon launched a large bolt of black energy toward Caius. The bolt struck the bandit and exploded, sending Caius flying back and crashing into the wall, the explosion sending broken furniture, rotted wood and the bandit's body flying as well as things hit walls and the ceiling and then started to fall around them. The ground seemed to shake below them, and it was clear the building was unstable... It wouldn't take much more of this.
The other bandit had already drawn a firearm and fired at Celes, hoping to catch her by surprise.
"Agh..." Caius grumbled in pain as he willed himself back up. The space was too tight for them to survive with two powerful spellcasters in the fray. And with the rumbling... If the spells didn't kill them, the house just might.
"Celes! We gotta go!" Caius called to Celes, hoping she'd be able to get herself an opening. Charon didn't hesitate as he launched another of those bolts toward Celes. Caius held out a hand to Celes as he readied his weapon, eyeing the window that had shattered from the blast. "We can't stay here!"
Quina, he remembered Quina. So he, she, it... Referred this lad to the Dragonblades? He nodded his head in turn after that, and listened as he seemed quite excited about the idea of there being another from Spira here. The kid seemed alright, but Caius still decided to be careful, just in case.
"I'm not sure where she is right now, but I suppose joining the Dragonblades is one way to find her sooner or later" He responded with a casual shrug. It wasn't pressuring him to join, of course. Just an observation. He knew nothing about this kid besides that he apparently had good intentions. "We can talk about recruitment in a bit, but I do have business here before I can sit down and talk about anything of the kind" He admitted. "If you would be willing to assist me with a small errand, then the job will be done faster and we can speak then."
Caius had begun walking down the road. If Declan chose to follow, they would come to the entrance of a nice looking home. A nobleman's estate, obviously. "Vordun, move to the back" He commanded to the dragon, before looking to Declan. "No guarantees, but if someone comes running out the back door or another entrance, I want you to nab them. No questions asked" He whispered. "I'll explain the situation once it's been handled, but if you can just trust me for now, it will all become clear in time. If I'm wrong on my suspicions here though... Well, then I guess I'm still free. I'll hold up mine either way."
With that, Caius motioned for him to follow Vordun, who had already started heading off toward the back of the home as Caius would move forward and knock on the door. He was greeted by a young woman, who noted that her master was busy and was not seeing anyone. Caius had noticed the collar on her neck, quickly recognizing it. Something that very quickly confirmed his suspicions for the most part, but he did want to make absolute sure. Making up a story about a business proposition, Caius was granted entry into the home. Caius noticed quickly that the woman's movements were a bit restricted, and while waiting for the "Master" to make an entrance, Caius persuaded the woman to talk.
It was a few minutes later that a well-dressed man let out a scream and went barreling out of the house and through the back door.
Dovakiin The supposed victim of the monster seemed to know a fair bit about it, though didn't seem all that adamant about fighting it. So Caius figured that wherever they were from, the monster was potentially from the same place. It wasn't anything Caius had heard of after all, and he'd done extensive research in bestiaries to the best of his abilities. So if this kid was a scholar... Well, odds are he wouldn't be fighting, seeing as he hadn't struck at the monster yet. Caius didn't know what the cards were for, so he had no reason to assume they were for battle. With that, he turned his head toward him.
"Good to know. If you aren't planning to fight, I'd suggest you get to safety" He responded calmly as he then turned back to the horse dragon thing. The monster charged forward toward Caius, and he let out a calm breath as he tossed his sword upward. The drake in the air caught the sword in his talons, allowing Caius to disappear in a burst of light and warp forward, grabbing the sword and hanging onto Vordun's talents as he allowed the sword to disappear.
"FIRA!" Caius called out as he held out a hand, and flames would launch from it and slam into the creature, exploding on impact. From here, Caius could use ranged attacks without it hurting them. The creature, despite its draconic looks, didn't seem to be able to fly.
But apparently, it didn't have to.
The monster let out a roar, and Vordun jerked to the side as a lightning strike narrowly missed the drake and his rider, hitting the ground and very quickly eviscerating the spot on contact. The storm that had whipped up above them had been so sudden that it had caught Caius and Vordun off-guard.
"We need to go down lower. It's risky, but it's still safer than staying up here" Caius told Vordun, who let out a snort as the dragon obliged. They had lost their advantage far too quickly for his tastes, but he could make do.
At her initial response he grit his teeth, as if thinking he'd hurt her in some way, or was just... Being confusing, he wasn't sure? He let out a sigh. "This is... Difficult to explain, and I know I'm not making it any easier. And I'm sorry for that. I'm still... Still trying to piece this all together myself."
After a few moments more of trying to piece it all together, Caius did at least find something of an explanation. Something to better get out what he was thinking. He knew full well what he had been saying was nonsensical and rambling, but... The whole thing was still difficult to wrap his head around. He was still having trouble formulating things into words, but perhaps there was still room to give it a go. Taking another breath, he decided to give it a try, one more time.
"I guess... To put it as concrete as I can, I... I raised Vordun. Vordun is... Special, to me. And Darlene was a monster that was going to hurt Vordun. That was all that ran through my mind in that moment. Everything else just adds up to why to me, she was designated a monster, but... That's effectively all I could think of. A monster hurting Vordun. Everything else just... Wasn't there."
This hadn't been so hard, once upon a time. He killed when necessary to survive, man or beast. He only had to care for himself and his own survival, and nothing else. Things got... Complicated when he joined the Kingsglaive. His moral compass that developed as he realized more and more that he could make a real difference with his life made him desire to stop killing other people altogether, now that he no longer felt he had to. Now that he had more control over things. Then he was sent here, and tried to go back to his old life, thinking he couldn't live his current one any longer when he wasn't a Kingsglaive anymore. But he never truly was able to. He was never truly able to take that next step. And that incident with the necromancer, losing his family all over again... The way he rebuilt himself after that complicated matters further. All he could think about was saving, protecting lives. And he was okay with that.
Yet now he'd taken one. And he felt nothing when he did it. One could justify it as protecting, as Yuna put it, but... He didn't know how to feel. He knew he should feel horrible, and he wanted to. He wanted to promise himself he'd never do it again, but... He knew he couldn't make that promise either.
But Yuna had also said that it wasn't always wrong to kill someone. He just... Wasn't sure.
She reasoned that he needed to be careful, going that route. And she was right, after all... It really did get easier. He knew this, easily.
Yet now it felt like he'd killed for the first time all over again.
"I know."
It was all he could manage, and he just nodded his head when she brought up Celes. "Yeah... I suppose she has to know about this, doesn't she?" He spoke softly, looking down again. "I am not looking forward to that."
He figured he'd probably disappoint her. Maybe upset her. He didn't know if he could handle that.
Deciding to change the subject, he held up the papers he'd found to signify an intent toward them.
"But I do need to speak to her about these. I was hoping I'd find something like this" He admitted. "The Original Sin, it turns out that they have four main lieutenants, each the leader of a different part of their business structure and operations. Darlene was the head of their human trafficking operations that you and I encountered in our last job together. Her being taken off the table will most likely cripple their operations in that sector. Which will also likely cut their funding as this appears to have been one of their biggest sources of revenue. These slaves were sold for quite a bit of gil per person. But Darlene... She was shrewd, cunning, and there aren't a whole lot of people willing to do what she does, with her level of skill. They will have a difficult time continuing this business outlet with the same level of success as before without her."
Sure, they could have had the same effect if she was indisposed... But she had already made it clear earlier that she was an escape artist. While Caius still wasn't sure if what he had done was right... He could acknowledge also that what he'd done to protect Vordun had now likely made a lot of people more safe in the days to come. At the very least, Darlene's scheme of leading people to an ambush with her fake daughter plea had now come to an end.
"The reason I need to get these to Celes" He spoke up as he handed the papers to Yuna to view for herself. "Is that we now have more information on their operations... And the names of their lieutenants. All but that of the leader, who's name I still don't have. But their names are... Charon, the magical expert, he trains their units in use of magic and uses his illusion capabilities for counterfeiting."
He thought back to the time that he, Celes and Relm dealt with bandits together, where one used magic and nearly turned Caius to dust. Was that the work of one trained by this Charon?
"Darlene, now former head of human trafficking and slave vending operations. As I said, their most profitable operation."
He motioned to one of the papers in particular. "They have a list of buyers, as well. I intend to start paying them a visit. Celes is not going to be happy when she finds out that people are taking ownership of people against their will even in Torensten."
With that, he moved onto the next. "Roy, their recruiter and combat trainer. It sounds like he might be their strategist and the mind behind many of their raids as well."
In some respects, he sounded like he served the role that Celes served for the Dragonblades.
"Unfortunately, the last one is difficult to make out and I'll probably need to see if I can get someone who can get out the ink blotch that was probably spilled on the documents during the battle" Caius admitted. "But we have a start, at least. For the first time since this whole thing started, we finally have an idea of what we're up against."
What Caius knew of Malboros were their tendency to use their tentacles to attack as well as Bad Breath. Though this one was clearly a different kind and he didn't know just what it would do. That spit attack was already new. Whatever else this variation of the Malboro could do, Caius was in no hurry to find out. The creature had shaken itself around, ramming into trees and making it very hard for Caius to keep his grip until the mercenary had finally been able to kick himself off right before the aforementioned blaze of fire. Caius would call out to Vordun, who would catch Caius on his back.
But the shrieks were deafening to the ears. His ears, his nose, almost all his senses were being assaulted at once. Caius needed to figure out a way to kill this thing quickly, or he risked destroying this once-peaceful forest in the midst of this battle. The longer this went on, the more destruction that the monster caused in its rampage. Caius let out an exhale to calm himself, slamming his palms into his cheeks to bring himself into focus when the noxious fumes made that breath a problem. Coughing a few times, and shaking his head to shake off the pain from the smack, Caius considered just what had to be done.
As the creature suddenly began to grow even angrier, and began its little dance though... Caius knew what was coming. It was the same dance he'd seen before, and at that moment he knew what needed to be done. And he didn't like what needed to be done.
He had gone to Sonora and stocked up on a new set of these after he had used his last two from home on the first Malboro he had fought, and then the second on the giant wyvern atop the mountain. They had been quite useful, and he was glad he had been able to find more in Sonora.
But he knew they needed to act quickly. And there was no guarantee that this would work either.
"Over his mouth" Caius commanded to Vordun. While apprehensive about the order, Vordun had no reason to question it either. The dragon let out a snort in response before soaring forward for the bombing run. Caius pulled out some kind of orb from his pack, and once they were in position he pulled the pin. Hoping that Bad Breath would detonate it at the right time and wouldn't detonate it too early to completely gut it from the inside, he dropped the orb into the Malboro's mouth before sounding the command to Vordun.
"PULL UP!" He called out loudly to the dragon, who, sensing the urgency, would abruptly jerk upwards. Caius hadn't secured himself into the saddle and would be forced to hang on for dear life. Compared to his first outings where he would have quickly fallen off, Caius had learned to hang on far tighter now. Securing the first of the restraints on the saddle, Caius quickly pulled out one of his gun-daggers and fired a few shots at the Malboro to get its attention. If the plan didn't work and it did manage to fire Bad Breath, Caius needed it to shoot upwards, away from the forest.
Though success or fail, it wouldn't stop Caius' entire body from shaking after how close that was. He had flown far too close to the sun. And he knew full well what Bad Breath could have done if he hadn't been quick about it. The condition Cissnei had been in was still burned into his mind.
"Sort of. I can summon my weapons" Caius corrected casually in turn. "I built them. But my abilities do allow me to get more use out of them. The Power of Kings is primarily meant as a compliment for your weapons, that is where its power truly shines. But yes, I served the King of Lucis, up until I was brought here" He added, looking to her. "I never did get a chance to ask. What was your role in Burmecia? You'd think that they would be able to make great use of a Dragoon. Or, well, Dragon Knight as you call it" He inquired, doing his best to remember to use the name that Freya was familiar with as a courtesy.
She seemed surprised when it turned out that Vordun was a dragon. "Well, I never said he was a man" Caius responded with a laugh. "And I spoke the truth when I said I've known Vordun his whole life, seeing as I raised him. As for me... Well, let's just say my life didn't exactly begin until he came around" He added, smiling faintly. Neither of them seemed to mind that Freya had initially been mistaken. Not many people would expect someone to have a drake for a companion, after all. And the attacks from Torensten nearly a year ago... Well, Caius wasn't exactly able to bring him into town now that he was full grown. He couldn't pretend that Vordun was his dog anymore.
"With that in mind, shall we get going?" Caius inquired toward Freya as he took out a whistle that he had borrowed from the stables. "I took the liberty of renting a chocobo before I went to find you" He explained as he handed the whistle to her. "Give it a blow and we'll head out immediately."
With that, he would reach over and stroke under Vordun's chin, inducing a coo from the drake as he then coaxed him to lean down. Once he did, Caius would climb onto the saddle and strap himself in. He would have just brought Freya aboard Vordun, but he had found with the last few people that trying to ride a dragon for the first time right before the mission had... Mixed results. Better to save it for people who had an interest in doing so, or if it were an emergency. If she had an interest, he would show her later, he didn't mind. For now, this was the most practically sound way to go about things.
“Trust me. I’ve been eyeing that big, shiny new airship since I got here” Caius admitted with a small laugh. “Granted, it’s not as necessary now that I have… Well, you know…” He trailed off as he motioned to the drake behind him, making a few whistling noises to emphasize his point. “We’ll probably work on flying together when he’s a little bigger. Too small right now, but the little guy is growing fast. It wasn’t all that long ago that he could fit in my jacket and be carried around everywhere. Feels like a bloody lifetime ago, but…” He remarked with a casual shrug. “Well, here he is."
"Either way, I get the idea" He added. "And I’m sure with a lot of work, you’ll earn that airship eventually. Would definitely recommend mercenary work. Treasure hunting's fun, trust me, I know. But a steady job will definitely get the job done much faster, and you can certainly still hunt on the side" He spoke up as he and Vordun began walking toward town, keeping pace with the hissing one while they spoke. Variety really was the spice of life, wasn't it? That was something that Caius had found anyway. Mercenary work and all the different scenarios that he got into, and the occasional adventuring and treasure hunting. It was a good life, at least by what he knew. Far better than the life that he used to live -- something that he had begun to realize more and more by the day.
He listened as Kas first spoke about a Moogle, or something like that, that he missed. He didn't know what a Moogle was, but he nodded his head. "I hope that your reunion, if possible in the living world, is one that arrives soon" He spoke calmly. While the lizard man's capabilities were impressive, it sounded as though he had only scratched the surface of what he could have learned under his clan.
"Nothing wrong with doing what makes you happy, even if not everyone agrees with it" Caius responded. "And nothing says you can't work hard and learn how to master it your own way. I'm sure their training isn't the only way. And if you already have the basics as you do... Even better."
Caius had spent the last year honing his existing abilities as far as he could. He did not need the Kingsglaive to do that. So he knew this by experience, and hoped he would take the advice as far as possible.
