The Dragonblade
Caius felt bad for worrying Cindy, but there wasn't much for it. At least she had settled into something calmer, now that they had moved onto the subject of Lumina. And even Caius felt himself lightening up just from talking about her. That was what Lumina did to him, after all. Just having her on the mind lifted his spirits, and he had to keep himself from going on and on about her, with a passion hotter than Ifrit itself. He had never lost that habit of his tongue loosening when the subject came up, though he was still working on trying to pace himself...
"Thank you," he spoke softly. It was strange to be congratulated on finding a relationship, but he supposed that was proper, wasn't it? It was cause to be celebrated, as it meant, on paper at least, happiness for those involved. Friends congratulated each other in these circumstances because they were happy that their friends were happy. That's how it works, right? Speaking of, maybe now that Alex had blurted out Prompto's obvious crush to Cindy, they might have a talk of their own? Though while Caius couldn't quite put his finger on it... It felt sometimes like Prompto's attention was focused more on Noctis. Considering Lunafreya may be alive, however...
Perhaps that wasn't a battlefield Caius should be drawing his sword in. Better to tactically withdraw. On the topic of tactics, apparently she considered Lumina to be lucky. Caius cocked his head, unsure of why when what he was doing felt like what anyone would do, but it was a compliment nonetheless and he didn't want to make her think he was ungrateful. "She's earned it. More than I can possibly describe. This, and more."
As a literal savior of her world, on multiple occasions? Someone looking out for her was paltry in comparison to what she deserved. But he did his best. That was his duty as a partner. Even if she wasn't some world-saving, god-slaying Goddess... He would have done this, all the same. She made him happy. Happier than anything had made him in his life... It was the least he could do.
"I am still figuring out what activities there are, I'm... Not quite used to being out here, like this. I'm usually buried in my work" Caius admitted candidly. "I can admit that I don't quite know what to do with myself in this environment. But I'm glad you're thriving. With how hard you work, you've earned a break."
He'd never admit that about himself, though. No matter how much he worked. Though he scratched his head when she asked about Noctis and Prompto.
"I know they arrived safely. That's a relief. I'm intending to check in on them when I return. Wanted to give them some space first, let them tend to their wounded."

The Dragonblade
"Then stay in Torensten awhile. The body needs to rest to operate at full capacity in battle" Caius advised Enma, and Mu in kind. Completely oblivious to the irony that he didn't follow his own advice. His only rest lately was when he was with Lumina. Though his attention was taken by Mu revealing he was not, in fact, as human as Caius was. Instead, he was part of a race called the Au Ra. He actually had a tail! And scales! And those horns on his mask were-
"Those are real? I thought they were decorative" Caius admitted with a small laugh. He had thought it an ornament, and had never put stock in the idea that maybe Mu didn't just have a keen sense of fashion. "They are very... Draconic. You're not selling me very well on the idea you don't fit with the Dragon-blades" Caius cheeked, with a rare pun shot by the Dragonblades leader. It wasn't often that Caius was this laid-back, not when in the midst of the Rest. But with people like Mu? It came to him a bit easier. "Suppose enhanced hearing would aid your profession, however... Though I'm still not entirely sure what your profession is or who you work for."
It seemed he had already filled Mu in on Kuja before, and had simply forgotten. A lot had happened since, so he was bound to forget some details. But he was glad to have someone like Mu around, keeping an eye out. Even if he didn't think himself a fit for their organization, Caius wouldn't say no to Mu's aid when it was offered. Nor to offering him a drink if he was thirsty. Letting Mu take their pick, Caius poured a drink for him. And one for Enma, just as a courtesy. Then one for himself, because it had been a long day.
"Sephiroth tried to destroy his world. He claims to not remember anything of it, but he got into a fight that levelled Central Provo. Not very convincing that he won't do it again. He has two confidantes, Genesis and Angeal. Genesis is a pyromaniac, an unfeeling sociopath. Angeal is more reasonable but didn't hesitate to help him in a fight with a lot of collateral damage, either" Caius thought it right to share his intel, if it might help Mu with his hunt through the shadows. "The parasite is... Complicated. The woman that is its current host is..."
He took a deep breath. This was going to be heavier than he had hoped.
"My partner. Romantically. I have to find a way to expunge it before it takes her completely, and her body will have to be destroyed to render it dormant again."
Yeah, a LOT had happened since Mu had been here last, Caius having an actual romantic partner being chief amongst them. But if he couldn't figure things out with that parasite, it would be a short-lived affair.
"The Original Sin has been... Quiet, since Celes and I stopped their leaders. Too quiet. Their activity has slowed to a crawl, but I don't trust it. They have too many resources, and I don't know where they're coming from. I feel as though they are biding their time, but I don't know what for."

The Dragonblade
Nothing from Argos, huh? He supposed he wasn't surprised that he still wasn't on speaking terms with the dog. It would take time, it seemed. Perhaps that would be more doable now that she was back. At least Cassandra seemed more... At peace, compared to before. He didn't understand the purpose of her vacation, but he hoped that it aided her well.
He had forgotten that he had taught her the trick, though, but he was glad it had served her. When it came to Alex, though... It seemed she had not mentioned it simply because she didn't think it would matter. Famous last words, that. Her reaction to the rumors? About the same as Alex, honestly. Caius took a swig as he listened to her praise him as a good man, albeit unpredictable.
“A good man, aye?”
Caius had to stop himself from laughing. Maybe on the surface, as someone willing to jump into a gulag to help Noctis, he seemed as such. But after what Caius had seen... “Forgive me, but he’s made it hard to believe that he’s anything more than selfish, vindictive and spiteful," Caius found himself unable to mince words. He kept his calm, a gentle tone all around, but it was clear he was crossing into territory that was a sore spot for him. "To put it bluntly, the woman I love is host to a dark parasite. One that if not stopped will consume her, and murder hundreds. When meeting Noctis for other business that Alex was involved in, I beseeched his aid. Alex later went out of his way to brag that he could save her, but not to bother to ask.”
He doubted he could have. Alex was arrogant and didn't understand the nature of what plagued Lumina. He made his assumptions and made his proclamation before Caius could even explain it to him. Once he had? Caius had no further interest in dealing with him. Caius' expression grew somber as he took another drink.
“I care not if he was a hero in your world or what ails befell him, I see him as scum. He attempted to sabotage Yuna’s healing clinic for being associated with us, he tried to knock out an innocent woman for walking in on the meeting with Noctis. And then threw this apparent fact in my face. I hold no respect for someone like that.”
That was that. Cassandra likely wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise. Not after what Alex had done. He would have kept it at that, just a courtesy tell, and moved on if not for the actual problem at hand.
“The reason I called this meeting is because of his potential as a threat. He found out that Yuna, one of our leaders who runs the healing clinic in Provo that we helped fund the opening of, can summon a manifestation of Shiva in battle. Thinking it may be one from your world, he intends to kill it. Failing to do so, killing Yuna instead. Considering he has someone on our watchlist who tried to destroy an entire world, in his employ with the Stones, I am taking this gravely serious.”
Alex was a threat on his own, yes. But he was confident that even with all of Alex's experience, Caius still stood a chance. But Sephiroth's presence complicated things. And if Cassandra was from the same world, she may also be concerned about Yuna's summon, so he did make sure to share one tidbit. “I believe Yuna’s summon is just an egi, an apparition. It was such in her world," Caius made sure she knew. "But I think Alex is too blinded by spite to care, and may try to harm her regardless.”
That lack of respect was replaced instead with an objective list of what he had done, and where it would likely lead him. And meant he would, if need be, treat him as a monster that needed to be stopped. “I have no intention of allowing that, no matter what I have to do to protect one of our own. Anything you know that can aid me in keeping him at bay peacefully, I need to know. If it comes to a fight, I will put Yuna’s life first. Just as I would do if it were you.”
He turned to her, and gave a remorseful lowering of his head a moment. Alex was her friend, he did not want to agonize her with the thought that Caius could have to kill him if Alex forced them into a full-scale fight. But each and every single Dragonblade was important to him. They were his family... And he would protect his family.
“That is my duty. To you, and to all that I call family.”

The Dragonblade
Part of Caius' subconscious asked itself: Why didn't he try to appeal to Genesis' humanity? Surely there had to be something in there. Something that he could tug on to get him to cease his ways and embrace some level of inner compassion. But that was where reality stepped in. Because Caius knew one thing just from talking to this Genesis.
He would be wasting his breath.
This was the kind of person that the redhead was. It wasn't a new thing to Caius, far from it actually. The brigands that had taken his family from him, their employer Cortez, the Original Sin bandits, Kuja, Sephiroth, Emet Selch, Ardyn... Alex. They all had that in common. Trying to appeal to their humanity was a wasted effort. Caius had accepted that as fact. Genesis joined a growing list, and his response further confirmed that theory.
Though speaking of Sephiroth, it seemed he had encountered another one of his buddies. Caius' breath hitched when he heard the name spoken with such familiar tone.
"Served a king. Kingsglaive -- special forces unit, essentially."
Not far from SOLDIERs, really. Not that Caius knew. What he did know however, was from Angeal that Sephiroth had once had a group of friends. But judging by the destruction in Provo, and that Angeal had previously turned into a monster that one time and flown away... He supposed it made sense that another of Sephiroth's friends would be unhinged in some way. He was differently unhinged from Angeal, however. Angeal still held some of his humanity. This one? He wasn't so sure.
Caius didn't really want to know what Genesis was inferring about the corpse. He didn't know what Emet had done with it, and he wasn't that curious. What was done, was done. They would deal with it later if they had to.
"Might not be fancy enough for your taste -- may put the gil towards the honeymoon instead. She seems to enjoy trips like this."
Was that a bit of cheek? Caius wasn't exactly Genesis' biggest fan right now, but talking about Lumina did put him in a better mood at least. He wasn't sure if "just missing each other in the middle of a burning manor" was something to bond over, but debating semantics seemed pointless. Though Caius wasn't sure how he had managed to keep a straight face while even entertaining the thought of marrying Lumina.
Thoughts for another day. Caius watched curiously as they were strapped onto the thing. Being strapped onto said thing alongside a pyromaniac psychopath was not his idea of a vacation, but if anyone was going to keep Genesis in check, he supposed, it was him. Though apparently he had said something that stirred the man's interest, as Genesis suddenly perked up a great deal when Caius asked about the poem. "A poem from your world, and a play as well? Interesting," Caius mused aloud. "I've only seen a play once, by request of one of the trope I saved on the road. It was... Nice. I shall give LOVELESS a try whenever you finish that play."
Genesis had a weird response to being asked if he was ready, and Caius didn't really understand it. Was that also from the poem? Weird time for it, but...
Caius made a motion with his hand to indicate he was ready.
"I am a touch inexperienced in interpreting poetry, never had time. What is LOVELESS about?"
Famous last words, as the boat below would start up, and Caius grit his teeth...

The Dragonblade
Caius was about halfway through the first drink when Cassandra had arrived. He sorely needed to knock back a few after everything he had been through -- between Sonora, and the last few days as well. But when she spoke up, he would shoot her a wave and motion for her to take a seat beside him and order. Turning to the tender, he would shoot them a wave.
"Her first is on me. To celebrate her return. If she orders anything for the canine to eat as well, I'll cover it."
No intentions behind it, he was just happy to see her alive and well after all this time. He didn't know the specifics of where she had gone, or what she had been up to. But at the end of the day, Cassandra was still a part of the Dragonblades family. And it was his duty to look out for her where he could. Paying for a drink here and there, when she had just returned from a long journey, was nothing.
Cassandra had asked about what he had wanted to discuss, deciding to get down to business right away. It seemed pleasantries would have to wait, then. That was fine. Well, almost all of them. He did want to note first:
"First, I wanted to see how you were doing. You have both been gone awhile" Caius brought up then. "I hope your journey has done you good, and that you are well. I'm happy to see you still intact, at least, and looking no worse for wear. No poisoning symptoms, either" he threw in a small amount of cheek, the corner of his lip curling into a slight smile.
"But I also wanted to talk to you about your friend, Alex. After you joined us, and neglected to mention your previous employment with the Rising Stones, the man has been making a fool of himself in taverns, lashing out and spouting all sorts of negativity about us. I wanted to know if you were aware of any of it" Caius then got down to business, as requested. "Some of his ramblings have spun off into ridiculous rumor, as well. Some of which, are, well..."
Caius took a deep breath, scratching his head. How in the world was he supposed to word this? He took a fairly sizeable swig of his drink to prepare for what he was about to say.
"People have been made to think that I personally seduced and poached you from the Rising Stones into my ranks, out of your lover's arms, and that you took the dog on the way out. I'm not bothered by rumors like that, but I wanted you to be aware of their origin, and see how much you already knew. However I've since met Alex during my recent trip to Sonora as well, and in my trying to clear it up, things got... Problematic. Drastically. I wanted to pick your brain on the matter."

The Dragonblade
Caius didn't seem too surprised when Enma commented on the strangeness of him being here. Mu had tried to be cordial and not voice that sort of thing, but.. Enma was another story. And they weren't the first to ask today why Caius was manning the front desk. “The girls got the day off. So I’m filling in,” Caius answered with a shrug, making that a part of his stretches as he finally managed to get himself comfortable before stepping out from the desk. “It’s part of the growing pains of any organization. We have received a lot more work after the Kraken incident. We’ve restructured and I have been running the Rest myself, though Celes came back from Provo once our new operation was stable, to fill in for me while I had business to take care of. Right now we’re both here, so we gave the girls a day off. The girls being our two administrative clerks."
The mercenary cocked his head towards the main room for if the two wanted to sit by the fire and relax after walking all the way here. "I'm glad your travels haven't dampened either of your spirits" he commented, though Caius would quirk a brow as he turned to Enma for a moment. "Does Mu actually have a tail and scales?" he inquired curiously. He hadn't known Mu to be anything but human, but... With all that armor, he had never really had reason to suspect otherwise.
"As for work... After the Kraken, we've weathered the influx of jobs and hired some administrative staff. Celes went to Provo to help one of our leaders start a clinic over there, so it was up to me to train the new staff. Strange for me, considering I'm not used to staying in one place for very long. But it was fruitful, I have learned a great deal about how much more there is to this job than just fighting. I've trained recruits, done paperwork, trained staff, gone on grocery runs, and made time to meet people around town and get to know the town we've been protecting," Caius continued to elaborate as he walked into the main room, looking around the bar to see if he could fix up Mu some kind of drink. "There's also been some threats we've had to deal with. Kuja, who worked with the Lich. Sephiroth, who laid waste to Provo's square and may be at risk to strike again. And while Celes managed to quell the Dominant Clive's attempt to destroy Torensten's crystal, we had been holding him here on house arrest until recently. Not to mention the re-emergence of a parasite that once took over a host and slaughtered hundreds. It's been extremely busy, to say the least."
He would offer Mu a choice of drinks, even offering one to Enma as well even if he doubted they could drink. "You here to join up and lend us a hand?" he joked cheekily then. He didn't think Mu would actually accept, but it was worth a shot.

The Dragonblade
Clearly he had given away his anxiety to Cindy, and worried the mechanic. It was written all over her face. Cindy was understanding, citing that she should have known considering his history. How much had he told her? He couldn't quite remember. But then Cindy brought up Lumey, and the look she gave, Caius somehow knew what the mechanic was thinking. "Aye, Lumina. My... Partner," he answered then, deciding there wasn't really a point in hiding what they were from Cindy. He doubted that he would be any good at hiding it regardless. He could never keep himself from lighting up whenever he spoke of her, and Caius knew it.
Cindy had been granted an invitation it seemed, the same as him. He had figured her like him, completely stuck to her work and unwilling to get away from it unless it was necessary. It seems there was still much he had to learn about Cindy. "I turned down the invitation initially. But Lumina wanted to go, so... Here we are," Caius admitted with a shrug. A cruise wasn't something that Caius had ever known much about, so he had never really dreamed of being on one. But... "She deserves the world, especially with her current struggles. If this is what makes her and her family happy, I can take a day or two off work for that."
Not that Lumina would have had trouble affording this herself, considering she was far more well-off than he was. But he wasn't going to begrudge her wishes either. Then Cindy asked if he'd had fun so far. Caius had to think about that one for a minute. What exactly constituted being fun out here? He wasn't really sure. "I've enjoyed my time here with Lumina and her family, yes. She's been intent on seeing and doing all that she can while she's here, so we've been pretty busy. Though after I gave her space to be with her family, I was partnered with a pyromaniac for parasailing."
Which explained why he was out here, lying down. Caius turned to face Cindy, settling his legs over the side of the chair. He was probably far too casual about that pyromaniac part.

The Dragonblade
All of this was a problem. Potentially a very big problem. Was he in danger of dealing with someone who could kill the crew right here, maybe torch the ship itself? That would put everyone on board, including Lumina, Claire and Serah, in danger. Caius refused to allow that. So for now, the best thing he could do was gather intel. And gather intel he did, as this Genesis not only openly admitted to setting the manor on fire, but why. Apparently he wasn't entirely an arsonist, just... Someone who had accidentally set the manor on fire. And didn't regret doing it at all. Even seemed to think it was for the best.
He didn't know if that was any better. Because it sure didn't feel like it was. "That's a tactical error, not considering your surroundings when using magic. Especially elemental magic," Caius mused aloud, unsure why he was telling a maniac that his tactics in trying to murder a man were wrong. Force of habit, maybe? But he supposed he could make use of it, since he had already blurted it out. Maybe even figure out how to tone down the man's capacity for uncontrolled destruction. "Yes, I recognize the man you describe. Likely committed the murder himself, if I was to guess. Abducted the body too, it was weird. But had debris, or burning debris fallen atop you, enough of it may have been enough to keep you from escaping in time. Or ruined that nice jacket you had," Caius reasoned, not sure if objective logic would do any good. But Genesis had shown no real regard for anyone's well-being. So purely objective may be the only language he would understand. "Even without care for the well-being of others present, preventing collateral damage to your immediate environment can be best for your own interests. He could teleport, setting the place aflame only benefited him."
He couldn't blame him for attacking that streak hair guy, but did he really have to use fire magic in a clearly very flammable place? It was clear he didn't care, and even his half-hearted apology rang hollow. "I got them out. The one I couldn't save was a stranger, got out on her own. Now we're dating, strangest thing" Caius remarked offhand, not even bothering to get offended at how flippant he was about it. Caius knew his kind too well at this point. People like him were why he had grown to distrust people growing up. It was useless to appeal to their humanity or sense of compassion when they didn't have any. Which was why Caius didn't even react when he said he would have killed the host anyway.
He was getting far too desensitized. It was a problem. "Doesn't seem worth the trouble to kill someone for that" was all that got out of him as they were brought up, and just as he feared, they were indeed partnered up. Perhaps for the best. If he snapped and lashed out over something trivial, Caius could summon his weapon and take him out. Though the one thing he didn't understand was Genesis' next statement.
"Is that a passage from somewhere? It sounds interesting" Caius inquired as he stepped up to the parasails. If he kept him talking, at least it might lessen his threat levels for a minute. And the passage did sound neat. Caius was still learning more about literature in Zephon.

"I don't believe it is. I think the nexus of this world brings people in, then calls them back to their original home when it deems fit," Caius responded in kind. "I've seen people die here. My memories on them don't get foggy. But when they disappear like that... Suddenly, my memories on these people aren't so clear. I know they exist, some of them have even held importance in my time here. But sometimes all I can remember clearly are... The moments, instead of the people. So my theory is they're sent home by the nexus, and as that person no longer exists within Zephon, parts of our memories fade with them" he admitted quietly, chewing the inside of his cheek while he worked. How many people that had been important to him had turned out this way? How many had he just... Forgotten entirely? How many of them had been Dragonblades, and he couldn't even honor their sacrifices?
Perhaps it was better not to think about it. Claire seemed fearful of his insinuation about dating, and Caius picked that up. So apparently that was a pretty scary thing. Probably best not to think about that too much either. Then? She claimed that a good woman was worth a bit of trouble.
As the food was finished and Caius would lay it out on the table, as flawed as it probably was it was at least edible. He would sit down across from Claire as he considered that statement.

The Dragonblade
“No need for "Lord", I grew up on a chocobo farm. Your formality is better saved for this Lord Crystal Smashy that I’ve been hearing about," Caius, after listening and watching her almost all him Lord again, did his best in to comfort Nerissa and get their roles straight. And even attempted a bit of dry humor to keep her nerves down. “And I want you to know that I understand," he promised her, smiling softly with a gentle and empathetic tone. She was nervous, clearly, and while Celes had always been better than him as a leader, he knew quicker when the stricter side needed to be set aside. "I served a king, once. There’s much to unlearn in your situation, especially if it was as bad as it sounds. But I don’t want you to look at me as some high-ranking official. At the end of the day, I am on the field for jobs just as you are. Or... I think you are, anyway?"
This ruins thing was something he was going to have to talk to Celes about. It had happened in his absence, so he needed to gain an understanding of why Celes, who was always the most fussy amongst them about their finances, would approve this. They did dip their hands in multiple hats, yes, but ruins exploration? A whole TEAM for it, within the Dragonblades? He was going to need more information from her, and then from Celes. But for now, getting this girl's nerves sorted was the priority.
"And I highly doubt I'm ever going to be found out to be a lord," Caius admitted with a small laugh, not even considering the possibility for a second. "And I'm fine with that. I'm happy leading the guild. And I'm happy being just as part of the Dragonblades as you are."
Was this how Garnet felt? When he kept using her royal title? What about Noctis, whom he technically didn't even serve anymore? Talk about having your own follies thrown right back in your face. At the least, he hoped he had been able to make her feel more comfortable. Royalty could be strict, so he wasn't that surprised she was stuck in her ways so much. Caius was still very much the same way. So hopefully he had set a healthy example to start with.
With that out of the way, it came time to learn more about this "team" Celes had apparently set up. Ok so not only had Celes set up some crazed inventor at his workbench, but also hired a ruins exploration professor and a team for him to run? Sure, she had looked fried at both ends when he had seen her, but this seemed like a lot to not bring up before. Granted, he had forgotten to mention the full extent of Yuffie -- so maybe he had this one coming. But seriously, eight people? For a team that while it sounded fantastic for what they wanted to do from a peacekeeping standpoint, was going to put a bit of strain on the budget. And they had already just put in quite the deposit to get Yuna's clinic up and running. Now granted, the clinic was worth it. It made them no money, but it benefited their overall goal, especially now that it was self-sufficient. Still...
Was this what Celes had felt like when he had suggested ambitious expansions that would be quite expensive? How much she fretted about how they were going to afford it all? The Dragonblades were changing, it seemed. And Caius would just have to figure out the best direction for adapting to that change.
"This is admittedly news to me, Miss Nerissa. I have been off on a trip, and Miss Chere has been in charge here while I have been gone," Caius admitted then, scratching his head as he tried to piece together how in the world he was to react to all this. "We're a mercenary guild that engages in peacekeeping operations on the side. So this is a little bit out of our usual scope. Have you and this Professor Fenwick discussed this "Ruins Research Unit" with Celes? What did she say about it, if you remember?"
