The Dragonblade
After returning from Sonora, Caius had some business to take care of back home. One of them related to a letter he'd received from Celes regarding an issue she had encountered in Provo. Apparently an "Alexander Sorel" had been spreading nasty rumors about the Dragonblades. In particular, shouting to the rooftops about everything from their practices, to Caius apparently being a blonde homewrecker.
Apparently it did not mean actually wrecking homes, as the smaller Claire had to explain to him.
This particular thing he'd belted out in the middle of a tavern had spread far and wide. Something that Noctis had later confronted him on, helping him figure out that Alex was, in fact, referring to Cassandra. And then Caius had tried to clear things up with Alex himself. Which had worked, sort of? But Alex had also turned out to be a sociopath with a god complex and Caius had to deal with the possibility he would have to kill him if he tried to hurt Yuna. So there was that too. Quite frankly, after returning from this long and arduous trip, Caius was tired. And he wasn't going to get any less tired anytime soon. Because before he returned to Sonora to deal with the formation of a potential mass-murdering starscourge spawn, he had to deal with the fact that some psycho had tried to destroy the crystal in Torensten. And that Celes had placed him in house arrest within the Wyvern's Rest. So there was a whole mess around that, as well as getting the place cleaned up as it had become quite unorganized in his absence. To be honest, they really needed some veteran warriors in their ranks to help keep things in order around here when he and Celes weren't around, but none had stepped up just yet. So they had to restore order, clean up, then deal with all the problems that had piled up.
One being the aforementioned Alex. To start with, Caius had invited Cassandra, who was herself returning from a journey, to have some drinks at a small place he liked, and catch up. Caius had gotten there first, and would already be on the first drink when she arrived. He needed to find out all that he could, so he could figure out what to do next.

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"]Cassandra could admit to herself that she had needed the time away from the world to settle back into her own skin. Being ripped away from Etheirys had caused a certain amount of trauma she had attempted to push on through. Had she not been ripped to another world before--the First and the Thirteenth respectively? Such a thing should not be an entire surprise, but this had not been by her own choice. This world allowed her no way back to her own home and the friend she had left behind. And even the few she had been able to run into had not remembered or had not known who she was entirely. How was a young woman meant to cope with such a thing? Her only comfort had been Argos when she had tried and succeeded in summoning him back to her side. The former familiar of Venat had been a lifeline to her that she had been able to cling onto even if he had to be bribed at times with gourmet, homemade treats. [break][break]
Another lifeline had been joining the Dragonblades before finding Hades in all of his glory. So much of her time had been spent with him and regaining memories from a life that had once been her own. Cassandra had kept so many of these revelations to herself until she felt comfortable enough to reveal such admissions to her former adversary. How would he react to such secrets? It was another worry that kept her hesitating on whether she should speak of her knowledge or not. Either way, such a thing was not relevant to the unexpected meeting Caius had asked of her. It had been quite awhile since she had last spoken to the leader of their group, and she felt guilt for temporarily leaving to situate herself more. [break][break]
Cassandra was unsure of what this meeting would even entail and it had her both curious and a little wary. Argos was currently at her side as he went at his own confident, assured pace at her side. Her familiar did as she asked, but he still held everyone else she knew it contempt until they had earned his respect. Stepping inside of the small establishment, she looked around for the familiar figure of Caius. Seeing the familiar form of him already sitting had her walking in his direction. A small smile crossed her lips as Argos soon sat on his haunches behind her while giving Caius his normal, contemptuous glance. "It's been awhile, Caius. What did you wish to discuss?"

The Dragonblade
Caius was about halfway through the first drink when Cassandra had arrived. He sorely needed to knock back a few after everything he had been through -- between Sonora, and the last few days as well. But when she spoke up, he would shoot her a wave and motion for her to take a seat beside him and order. Turning to the tender, he would shoot them a wave.
"Her first is on me. To celebrate her return. If she orders anything for the canine to eat as well, I'll cover it."
No intentions behind it, he was just happy to see her alive and well after all this time. He didn't know the specifics of where she had gone, or what she had been up to. But at the end of the day, Cassandra was still a part of the Dragonblades family. And it was his duty to look out for her where he could. Paying for a drink here and there, when she had just returned from a long journey, was nothing.
Cassandra had asked about what he had wanted to discuss, deciding to get down to business right away. It seemed pleasantries would have to wait, then. That was fine. Well, almost all of them. He did want to note first:
"First, I wanted to see how you were doing. You have both been gone awhile" Caius brought up then. "I hope your journey has done you good, and that you are well. I'm happy to see you still intact, at least, and looking no worse for wear. No poisoning symptoms, either" he threw in a small amount of cheek, the corner of his lip curling into a slight smile.
"But I also wanted to talk to you about your friend, Alex. After you joined us, and neglected to mention your previous employment with the Rising Stones, the man has been making a fool of himself in taverns, lashing out and spouting all sorts of negativity about us. I wanted to know if you were aware of any of it" Caius then got down to business, as requested. "Some of his ramblings have spun off into ridiculous rumor, as well. Some of which, are, well..."
Caius took a deep breath, scratching his head. How in the world was he supposed to word this? He took a fairly sizeable swig of his drink to prepare for what he was about to say.
"People have been made to think that I personally seduced and poached you from the Rising Stones into my ranks, out of your lover's arms, and that you took the dog on the way out. I'm not bothered by rumors like that, but I wanted you to be aware of their origin, and see how much you already knew. However I've since met Alex during my recent trip to Sonora as well, and in my trying to clear it up, things got... Problematic. Drastically. I wanted to pick your brain on the matter."

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"]A free first drink? Cassandra felt her lips quirk into an amused smile as Argos sat on his haunches beside her. Glancing downward, she met her familiar's eyes as the canine quickly lifted his head to the side as a snub. It seemed she had spoiled Argos too much with gourmet cooking for him to even consider the idea of another making his food. He really was a spoiled dog at the end of the day, but he had been loyal to her since the first. A quiet, constant companion at her side since she had been pulled into this world. "Perhaps next time?" she offered Caius with a light laugh. One day Argos would warm up to her friend. Maybe. [break][break]
Taking a seat beside him, she folded her hands upon her lap as she regarded him. Another slight smile curled on her lips as she hummed thoughtfully. It had been good for her to walk away for awhile, if only so she could sort out the memories from a former life. There were still gaps and a certain disorientation to the entire situation. All she had to do was take each day as they came and that would be enough for now. "No poison since you taught me your wonderful trick. It would have served me well several years ago," she said with a wry laugh. There were certain traumas she would have enjoyed avoiding, but there was no changing it now. [break][break]
A sheepish expression crossed her features at the mention of Alexander. Gods, what had he done now and why did it involve her? A small groan escaped her as she leaned her forehead into the palm of her hand. "Forgive me, but I gave no mention because I did not believe it would impact anyone but myself. I should have known better with how long I have known him." It was also her fault for leaving so abruptly, but she had believed Alex would be fine. He never did take well to his friends leaving his side. Cassandra had allowed her selfishness to get the better of her and this was the result of it. "What rumors has he spouted?" [break][break]
Silence. [break][break]
Several heartbeats passed as Cassandra allowed the words to simply flood her mind. Lover? Lover to Alex? Abrupt, incredulous laughter bubbled from her lips at the sheer lunacy of it all. "Gods, I would sooner try my luck at the Quicksands!" It took her several moments to eventually catch her breath before reaching for her own glass to take a large swig. The ale burned down her throat to help regain her focus. "Alex is an unpredictable individual when left to his own devices for long. He's a good man. What we went through together would take a long time to explain. He means well, but he can often....misconstrue situations into his own narrative."

The Dragonblade
Nothing from Argos, huh? He supposed he wasn't surprised that he still wasn't on speaking terms with the dog. It would take time, it seemed. Perhaps that would be more doable now that she was back. At least Cassandra seemed more... At peace, compared to before. He didn't understand the purpose of her vacation, but he hoped that it aided her well.
He had forgotten that he had taught her the trick, though, but he was glad it had served her. When it came to Alex, though... It seemed she had not mentioned it simply because she didn't think it would matter. Famous last words, that. Her reaction to the rumors? About the same as Alex, honestly. Caius took a swig as he listened to her praise him as a good man, albeit unpredictable.
“A good man, aye?”
Caius had to stop himself from laughing. Maybe on the surface, as someone willing to jump into a gulag to help Noctis, he seemed as such. But after what Caius had seen... “Forgive me, but he’s made it hard to believe that he’s anything more than selfish, vindictive and spiteful," Caius found himself unable to mince words. He kept his calm, a gentle tone all around, but it was clear he was crossing into territory that was a sore spot for him. "To put it bluntly, the woman I love is host to a dark parasite. One that if not stopped will consume her, and murder hundreds. When meeting Noctis for other business that Alex was involved in, I beseeched his aid. Alex later went out of his way to brag that he could save her, but not to bother to ask.”
He doubted he could have. Alex was arrogant and didn't understand the nature of what plagued Lumina. He made his assumptions and made his proclamation before Caius could even explain it to him. Once he had? Caius had no further interest in dealing with him. Caius' expression grew somber as he took another drink.
“I care not if he was a hero in your world or what ails befell him, I see him as scum. He attempted to sabotage Yuna’s healing clinic for being associated with us, he tried to knock out an innocent woman for walking in on the meeting with Noctis. And then threw this apparent fact in my face. I hold no respect for someone like that.”
That was that. Cassandra likely wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise. Not after what Alex had done. He would have kept it at that, just a courtesy tell, and moved on if not for the actual problem at hand.
“The reason I called this meeting is because of his potential as a threat. He found out that Yuna, one of our leaders who runs the healing clinic in Provo that we helped fund the opening of, can summon a manifestation of Shiva in battle. Thinking it may be one from your world, he intends to kill it. Failing to do so, killing Yuna instead. Considering he has someone on our watchlist who tried to destroy an entire world, in his employ with the Stones, I am taking this gravely serious.”
Alex was a threat on his own, yes. But he was confident that even with all of Alex's experience, Caius still stood a chance. But Sephiroth's presence complicated things. And if Cassandra was from the same world, she may also be concerned about Yuna's summon, so he did make sure to share one tidbit. “I believe Yuna’s summon is just an egi, an apparition. It was such in her world," Caius made sure she knew. "But I think Alex is too blinded by spite to care, and may try to harm her regardless.”
That lack of respect was replaced instead with an objective list of what he had done, and where it would likely lead him. And meant he would, if need be, treat him as a monster that needed to be stopped. “I have no intention of allowing that, no matter what I have to do to protect one of our own. Anything you know that can aid me in keeping him at bay peacefully, I need to know. If it comes to a fight, I will put Yuna’s life first. Just as I would do if it were you.”
He turned to her, and gave a remorseful lowering of his head a moment. Alex was her friend, he did not want to agonize her with the thought that Caius could have to kill him if Alex forced them into a full-scale fight. But each and every single Dragonblade was important to him. They were his family... And he would protect his family.
“That is my duty. To you, and to all that I call family.”
