The Dragonblades
"Too expensive to wear in combat situations" Caius answered calmly when Serah teased that she was expecting him to wear a suit and tie to the next behemoth. "However, if a suit and tie are to your satisfaction, I will endeavor to meet those expectations the next time I take you out to lunch."
Whether he was serious or not was going to be difficult to say because the mercenary was hiding it behind a continued calm in his tone and a poker face to die for. Serah insisted that her "sisters", to put it lightly, were good people albeit very unique. He supposed that was about the sum of it, though he couldn't help the feeling that Serah was severely understating it. Meeting both Claire and Lumina had definitely been... Unique occasions, to say the least. And had brought about some harrowing stories that he was still trying to wrap his head around to this day.
But of course, Serah had been woefully unprepared for them to go out to lunch, it seemed. Caius gave a long sigh at that. Clearly she hadn't been out for lunch in a little while. Caius knew he couldn't talk though, he'd only started doing business lunch recently. Serah insisted she could just take off the pan and it would be fine, however. Caius didn't know much about cooking on the pan, so he didn't know if she actually could or not. But the cautious side of his head was telling him to be, well, cautious.
"If you're sure that it will be fine, just make sure that it won't burn the house down while we're gone. Or make it so that the food's ruined and Claire has to cook. I don't know if she's old enough yet to cook without torching the place, but you would know better than I" Caius brought up. "If you prefer, I can stay and help and we can just talk business here. I don't know much about cooking of this kind, I have to admit, but I shall do what I can."

I'm not an army of one
Serah chuckled a bit. Light and Caius would have gotten long well. Well, they did now, but this was different. Caius was similar to how her older sister was in their old life. Maybe that was why it was easy for her to get along with him, maybe it was also why she could be pretty certain he worked himself harder than he needed to, probably on the regular. Though for all she knew it might or might not be a ruse, the man’s poker face could even out do Light’s in her eyes. It was funny to her. She thought that kind of figure wouldn't be in her life anymore with Fang not around and her sister now changed. It was nice in its own way.
”My sister’s would probably expect something like that haha, But i’m used to the more… rebel look with my fiance, oh not that i’m not sure he'll do something on our big day, he’s great like that, but really you can wear what you want if we're eating a meal… Oh! Just not all… dirty, I don't think anyone would appreciate going into a restaurant with behemoths and sweat all over us, you know?”
Serah frowned, shaking her head. She wasn’t sure what was worse, the idea her cooking reputation would be forever scarred by a burned meal, or the idea of Claire cooking to begin with! Her little sister had improved of course, already better than she was as an adult from her lessons-but Claire was still Claire and Serah had yet to get to the point of leaving her with their little families whole meal! Needless to say she had no intent of that being the case tonight either. She had quite a bit of experience in cooking, so she knew it would be fine so long as they didn't, for example, stay out all night or something. They only planned to go out for a bit however so it should be fine. Even in the worst case she could probably get Clarity to take care of the flames (She still wasn’t sure if she should trust her around the food yet…) On the other hand, if Caius didn’t mind talking about their business here it would let her skip the small worry all together. Plus they’d be here if her sister’s came later and maybe didn’t freak out over the food running and no one watching it. Serah nodded in response. She supposed it did make sense, it as a shame to let down Caius’ kind offer though.
”Claire cooking is a definite no… she’s not improved to that degree yet, though I dislike putting off your kind offer, it… might be easier, besides you can enjoy some of the food to later! Hmm no, your our guest, while i appreciate the offer if were staying i can handle the meal”
She smiled, having got the food to a place where it could sit for now she then took a seat at a nearby table, motioning with her hand to offer Caius a seat as well.
”So… if you’ll forgive my rudeness, you might be correct… While i’m confident the food would be find, this might be easier… though i do insist I make it up to you later. With that in mind… we can talk!”
Caius was a serious, but kind man. And she did like his company. She had the feeling they would be good friends, she had no doubt about it! After all the man was already getting close to the family, She was happy to see that same relationship continue.

The Dragonblades
"Worked harder than he needed to" was an understatement. Caius sorely needed a vacation but would probably never admit to it. They were lucky he even took breaks to fish, or made the effort to go out to dinner with Serah at all. Though even this was tied to business, wasn't it?
“Seems her own tastes are the reason I’ve been tasked with finding a different suit for different dates” Caius mused aloud when Serah brought up expectations and that she was fine with him wearing whatever he liked. He’d take her up on that most likely, Caius didn’t like wearing a suit by any means. Though while many others would have taken the phrase of “dirty” attire differently, Caius took it at face value and simply nodded in the affirmative. He'd probably wear business casual if they were going to a restaurant next time. Just to look professional. Nothing too straining, something he could fight in if there came a need.
It seemed Serah did not yet trust Claire to cook, and it was more convenient for her situation to talk business here. Which was fine with Caius. However, she declined his help, stating he was their guest and thus he shouldn't be helping. "I am not well-accustomed to "guest" customs, but I do not mind lending aid if it will make your work easier. If I am to benefit from your labor, it is only fair and logical that I lend my own to it, right?" Caius inquired curiously at that. Of course, as the homeowner, Serah's word would be law here. But he did still want to offer to help if it would be of use to her.
She motioned for him to take a seat, and he nodded in thanks before doing so. It seemed at least now they could talk business.
"If you think it more convenient for you to do so here, I have no problem with doing so" Caius affirmed as he then considered where to start. "I suppose to begin. The Dragonblades are a guild that serves two functions. One, we take jobs sent to us by our clientele, mainly related to slaying monsters or dealing with bandit problems. On occasion, we get the request to search for a missing child if law enforcement has turned up empty, or to serve as security for a traveling caravan if they feel they would be comfortable with a more proven but more expensive unit than if they had picked a few tough guys out of the local bar. We try to be reasonable with our prices, but considering the fighting capability of our best, and our other responsibilities, we charge more than the run of the mill mercenaries with a scale based off the difficulty of the job, the resources it will take and how much it would cost the mercenary in particular to carry it out."
After a bit of thought on how to word the second part, he continued. "Of course, not everything we do is for money - as you are well-aware. The Dragonblades are most commonly comprised of fighters from other worlds, like you and I. People who have fought to save their worlds and the people around them. That desire does not die out so easily, even in a new world. People have begun to depend on us when major threats come to Zephon and its people. When someone is in severe need, regardless of whether they can pay or not, most of us will choose to intervene without thought to reward. While you are technically not obligated to do so, ignoring those in need won't look favorably on the Dragonblades either. The reputation both gives us clientele, and an expectation. A blessing and a curse."
Caius looked out the window, out at Torensten's open sea. "Not too long ago, a horrifyingly powerful creature called the Kraken tried to lay waste to Torensten. Nearly flooded the entire city. Even Torensten's leaders looked to us to stop it. And we did. The King chose to pay us well for it in the end, but we did so because that's just what we do. The monsters we've fought, and the enemies we've made as a result of our work as well. They are and will continue to be incredibly formidable. Extremely dangerous. I will not sugarcoat the fact that our life is a very dangerous one to live. And if you feel it too much, we will not judge you for declining to join up. However, joining does mean you will be offered a steady flow of work that you can accept or decline at your leisure, and you will be paid a good percentage of the posted reward. You will meet a fair few people who share your ideals and history, whom see this guild as not just work, but a family."
He smiled softly at that. "You may not need a family. But the option is there if you think it is for you."

"That's why, yes, to be honest you should probaly be glad she's not taking you to stores for each date, your money would be dry in a heartbeat"
She chuckled playfully, giving a tut tut with her hand. He was fun to converse with and she supposed he had some point. Serah tapped her chin in thought, looking over her meal as if recalling every 'incident' during Claire's earlier cooking adventures. Claire had improved but she was very much the cook for a reason-it was only natural she had a slight fear of it occurring with someone whom she didn't know the skills of. Still, if Caius did blow up the house through his currently uknown cooking skills, she supposed she'd just have to get him to use his merc funds to get them a new one.
Well, she probably wouldn't have to, he'd probably just offer, but she wanted the thought in her head regardless, made her feel better.
"Fine fineeee Caius, you can help, but our next meal out will be over payments on my new house if the place goes up! here we can take turns and..."
She'd direct Caius for the few things she needed done, mainly adjustments, and a few more ingriendts that needed to be chopped and added. Once things were done they were able to sit down and get there meeting started, of which Serah of course listened closely to the man's words. It made sense, Serah had limited understanding of the inner working of mercenary groups, but the function did seem similar to how things worked with other groups she WAS familar with. They protected was the simple term, in different ways at least. perhaps she was oversimplifying but that was how she saw it. it made sense then that if the majority of the group was like Caius that they would need to charge more than some rag tag thugs. They should be properly complicated for the skills they brought to the table. Being able to take down creatures like Behomoths or find people lost to the wind wasn't an easy matter after all.
"That seems normal, your a skilled group, and you want your members to be fairly complicated, which they should with what you do. My fiance, hero that he is had a group similar, though they didn't get payed for there work... well they also used to basicully be a group of rebels but... still, the point is, work like that is hard-i hope people have tried to stiff you out of it any"
As he continued a warm smile came to Serah's face. Learning they were more like NORA than she thought was nice. When they went down to the surface the members of NORA protected the people of the village they made. This reminded her of that, potentially on a large scale given the types of threats that could, and had come.
The kind of threats that needed the power, brains and heart of people from different worlds to overcome, that's what she thought.
"It's commendable to do such things. People need protectors, they need a reason not to look over there shoulder and think everything will he washed away at any moment, no matter what attempts to do that washing. People can smile thanks to your group Caius, true wonderful smiles. Such a thing may seem small... but it's something I personally treasure. I can see the difficulty as well in it, but it's nice that reward can be put aside when it truly matters"
Caius told her about Kraken, she had heard of it, but hearing it in full made it hit harder. This coupled with Caius' statement that she didn't have to if these things were to hard on her made her smile, as she stood up.
"While I appreciate your thinking of me, Caius... your words have had the opposite effect. If anything... it's only cemented that I want to join"
The battle may be endless, but I will never give up
"Evil things need to be stopped, things that hurt, who twist the world or try to break it, whether that's monsters... gods... even people themselves. A light to burn away the darkness that would envelop the world if it wanted. Caius.... I'd be happy to stand with you and your friends in that manner, and to work with your group in general. Things like that Behomoth... like Kraken... like the things in my world... If I can help protect people from excprencing any of them...
she smiled warmly and nodded with conviction.
"Then I guess it's my time to be a hero, like Lighting and Snow, yeah... that sounds nice, I can protect Claire and Clarity, and everyone else, that's what I want, you have a new member Caius, I'll fight with you and your group, when you need me"
She shook her head, giving a tut tut once more.
"We'll see, my families bigger than you know honestly, I mean everyone's not even here... they might not even remember me if they come, or be from when we do. But the bonds we share are there none the less, now and always... heh, and maybe... my family will expand even further, with this new outing... I'd like that, it sounds... just lovely"[/color]

The Dragonblades
"She is fortunate that I do not spend much outside of necessities. Though I am sure I will manage to find use for the additional outfits in some way" Caius expressed as Serah insisted that he was lucky Claire didn't bleed him dry. "I do have business in Sonora, and one of the outfits she had me pick is admittedly a better fit for a trip to Sonora than anything to do with Torensten. So perhaps I will bring that" he mused aloud, though didn't say why it was so important that he look the part in Sonora. In truth, he needed to blend in. He could not afford to attract unwanted attention in Sonora with how paranoid their law enforcement was. Much less when he was planning to assist in breaking people out of a maximum security gulag.
Serah agreed to let him help, though warned him that he would be paying for any damages. He simply nodded at that and got to work. At first, Caius asked a lot of questions. Like, a lot. It actually slowed their progress down a bit because Caius would check and double check on everything that he did with Serah, ensuring that every step was perfect and that he was going in the right direction. Before too long however, Caius began speeding up his work very quickly as he either learned the process with striking speed and accuracy, or some measure of childhood muscle memory had kicked in like slipping into an old glove. Caius didn't know which, and didn't think too much about it. Just the task at hand. He was laser-focused, not often getting distracted as he zeroed in on getting it done.
Once they'd sat down, Serah seemed satisfied with the depiction of the Dragonblades, warts and all. She also discussed more about her fiance, who led his own group. She called them rebels, rebels from what? It seemed he still had more to learn about this world of theirs. She talked of things that needed to be stopped like she had seen them herself. Monsters, people and even gods. Which only brought more questions to mind. In the end, however, Serah was more than happy to join. Caius smiled gently then as he extended a hand to shake.
"It would be my pleasure to welcome you, Serah Farron."
Testing would not be necessary, he had seen her ability and convictions firsthand. Caius had seen all that he needed to.
"I will have to give you a tour of the Wyvern's Rest when you have time. While you already have a house in the city, I hope you can find a second home there alongside your peers."

The Truth Still Survives....
"If you don’t, I assure you she will-rest assured you may soon see the end of simple outfits Caius, my sister is quite the fashionista"
Serah giggled playfully as she said that. Then again perhaps Caius would get lucky, after all Clarity had gone into detail with her on her own… adventure outfit. Her sister had quite the taste in fashions of various kinds. This meant course that if this continued Cauis would likely be doomed to become her fashion guinea pig-for if nothing else she hadn’t had a good man to test those fashions on here.
Well, maybe it wouldn't bother Caius to much in the end, but it would probably take some adjusting. Serah herself was looking forward to the outfit Clarity had made for her!
"A new outing huh? Anyone else I’d ask if you had a nice date planned~”"
She’d pause briefly, smiling mischievously before continuing.
"But, if your anything like Lightning, my guess is you have a mission out there huh? Well, don’t let me intrude on your business! But do be safe ok? This family cares about you, it would hurt us quite a bit to find out something happened to you"
Caius was strong, but for even the strongest of people it just took one bad day sometimes. For the bad guys to have one edge over you that you can’t counter. One edge, and lives change.
One edge… and the world shatters.
But she shouldn't focus on that! Things were different now. The things getting in the way of her family's happiness were gone… Caius wouldn't hurt them anymore. The parasite was gone. There was no danger around them right now, there wasn’t anything TO worry about.
So why…. Did something feel off? Why did something feel like it was looming over her?
Serah was lucky that Caius asked so many questions during the cooking process. It meant that her mind was being taken from such negative lines of thinking. Serah didn’t mind helping Caius as they went, despite how she had teased she’d even give advice when needed. The man did learn quickly though… and in fact gained an intense focus as time went on. Soon enough she didn’t have to worry about his movements much at all in fact! It was quite the sight to behold if she was being honest. When they had finished with everything Serah couldn't help but smile.Caius had been a great help by the end. It led to their conversation thereafter. One that had gone quite well she had to say, put a good air of confidence under her.
"And it’s my pleasure to be on your team Caius"
Serah took Caius’ hand in her own and shook it firmly, a warm, gentle smile on her face. Yes this felt good, it felt nice. To have friends you could count on, and that could count on you. She had to admit there was a certain thrill to it for her to. She couldn't help but wonder…. Had Lighting ever felt that way during her time in the Guardian Corps?
"I’ll let you know when I’m next free then! If the others are anything like you Caius…. I have no doubt that they’ll be a joy… thank you”"
