The Dragonglaive
Why was he nervous? It was just drinks. He’d gone out with friends a handful of times. Went to lunch with Yuna, dinner with Jessie after her play, did that one blind date thing last year…. Had it really been a year? And there was the drinking with the pirate. That had gone… Relatively fine. So why was this any different? It wasn’t anything fancy, nothing formal, and yet… He couldn’t help but have butterflies in his stomach. Was it because of Celes herself or because he didn’t want his mouth to get him in trouble even further, especially while intoxicated?
Why had he asked her to this? It had been on a whim but the more he considered it the more he realized perhaps a situation where his tongue was loosened by drink should probably be the last one he should take Celes too. But he didn’t think about it at the time. Drinks seemed so… Impersonal. Compared to taking her to dinner. It was casual, easily interpreted as platonic. And the two of them needed more than a few drinks after the events of the last few days. But he still couldn’t help the jitters. What if he said the wrong thing again?
But perhaps he was overthinking it, he tried to reassure himself, and he was just nervous because while they’d spent time together before… Even with at least a year under their belt they’d never sat down in a non-work capacity and just talked and were themselves, going out somewhere on a more personal trip than a work-related one. Perhaps the uncertainty was making him overthink, he told himself. Should be fine, right? Ask her about her friends back home, take the lifeline she offered… Don’t get too personal… Should be fine.
He was somehow more concerned about this than he had been about bringing a dragon into the square in front of a million people. And boy, had that been an anxiety-ridden day. He was still tired despite doing his best to rest, and really, he knew he needed a few drinks to unwind. He just hoped he could relax and have things go without a hitch.
At least it wasn’t hard for the two of them to meet up, considering they worked in the same place and Caius wasn’t really going anywhere for a bit after the whole Kraken thing. It was still weird wearing things that weren’t armor, though. But he still needed to make repairs to his armor before he could use it. Instead, he wore probably the most casual thing he’d ever worn around most people. It was a red, collared shirt, along with slacks and boots. And it still felt wrong. But he knew he’d need to adjust to it, it probably wouldn’t be the last time. Especially with how hot Torensten was. It wasn’t so bad when he was constantly traveling in and out, but now that he’d actually spent time in Torensten for once, he’d begun to learn quickly that his armored jacket wasn’t the most practical thing in the world to wear here.
Either way, Caius met up with Celes, and off they went. It was a little cooler in the evenings, and with the recent storms, cooler still. It was a nice, gentle warm, which was perfect really. Caius turned his head to look to her.
“Do you have a preference for a place? I know a few, but if you’ve got somewhere you’re comfortable at, I don’t mind” he brought up.

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Celes was still tired. And sore. After the disastrous flood, she’d wanted nothing more than to crash in her bed for three days and so she had. She’d hardly left except to scurry for food and sip some water every now and then. There were things to do, she knew. Plenty of things now that their work was behind and their base had been hit by a typhoon. Still, she was more than happy to put all of that aside to indulge her basest instincts and just rest.
Celes hadn’t wanted to get up that day. She hadn’t wanted to put on her usual yellow pants and jacket, and her feet still protested every step in her boots. She was tempted to blame Caius for this, but she’d been the one to agree to the idea, hadn’t she? She’d agreed when she’d been half-asleep and still in shock, but the point still stood.
She had an oath to uphold. And that oath was to talk over drinks.
And so they walked together, quiet at first as they breathed the humid air. It was cooler than usual -- likely a product of the storm blowing through. Everything had changed after the storm. That’s what it felt like, anyway.
”Do you have a preference for a place?” Caius asked after a lengthy silence. ”I know a few, but if you’ve got somewhere you’re comfortable at, I don’t mind.”
”Oh. I don’t, really.” Celes pushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. She wasn’t wearing her bandanna to keep it in place. She missed it a little. ”Those kinds of places aren’t really my thing. Not that I haven’t been there before, but…” It was all back home. Back in that ruined, war-torn world where she’d be dragged there by Locke or Setzer or imperial generals before that.
”I think you should pick.”
This was awkward, wasn’t it? Probably. She was too tired to care.
”How have you been? I haven’t seen you since, you know.” The storm. It kept coming back to the storm. ”You’ve been through a lot.”

The Dragonglaive
Caius shrugged his shoulders. "Wouldn't call them my thing either. But sometimes the bitter edge of a strong drink complimented by the soothing numb that follows, is the best way to calm a soul when things grow overwhelming. It's a temporary respite, but it's enough. And I'd call fighting a Kraken, nearly drowning and nearly freezing to death overwhelming enough to merit a few drinks" he remarked with a small smile, the last part of the sentence laced in dry humor.
She wanted him to pick, fair enough. She hadn't exactly gone looking for places to drink around Torensten, which made sense. He had stumbled on some places, even if he didn't really go out of his way to look for them, since he typically went for a drink or two on his return trips back to Torensten. He nodded his head curtly and got to walking, considering the best place to go.
"I think I've got one. I don't really look for them much, but I usually drop by once or twice between jobs to settle the adrenaline from fighting. And to look for information on the operations of our mutual friends" he brought up, he doubted he needed to tell her who he was referring to. "One I found recently's not well known, but it sells a decent drink. Quiet. Been meaning to try it again."
It was a hint that Caius did not enjoy crowds. She hadn't been able to see his face at the Masquerade, but that had been hell for him back then too.
"If that's of your interest, we can give that a go."
If she agreed, he soon led her to a smaller place tucked in between a group of shops not far from the Wyvern's Rest. He held the door open for her as he stepped in. The place was small, even a bit homey. Not too different from the lounge room for the Dragonblades, even. The bartender eyed them with a peculiar expression before seeming to recognize Caius. They greeted the duo with a smile and motioned to two stools in front. The place had a few customers lounging around, but it wasn't crowded at all. It was perfect for Caius.

”Sure.” Celes agreed to wherever he picked because she didn’t have a better idea. She still felt a little in shock if she was telling the truth. Nothing felt quite real in that specific way that only trauma could give. She knew it well.
He led her into a small, quiet place that wasn’t particularly far from where they’d started. It was fine enough, she supposed as he held open the door and she started inside. A little cramped. A little bare. There weren’t many people inside at this time of day which suited them both fine. She’d never liked crowds. They were too conspicuous.
The bartender waved to Caius as a regular then motioned to two stools at the counter. Celes wished he’d pointed them towards a table instead, but she was too awkward to decline now that the offer had been made. She perched awkwardly on the bar stool, hands folded on the counter. She felt exposed with her back turned to everyone else. She also felt like she should probably be talking to the bartender, but she didn’t want to so she didn’t. She’d be Caius’ guest. Guests didn’t have to speak if they didn’t want to.
Except when they asked her what she wanted.
”Oh, um.” Why hadn’t she thought about it before now? She was on the spot now, and she guessed that she was supposed to know alcohol well enough that she wouldn’t need any kind of menu. If there were any, they were probably on the tables. Where she wanted to be.
”Do you...have any wine?”
”Of course we do. What kind?”
”The...fruit kind?”
The bartender laughed. ”I’ll find something. And you?” He was talking to Caius now. Thank the goddesses.
There was a napkin set in front her, and she grabbed it, twisting it between her finger and thumb. She hoped Caius was right about ‘the best way to calm a soul.’ She could really use some calm right now.
”Sorry,” she said once the bartender had left them alone and gone about finding whatever it was she’d ordered. ”I’m still a little tired.”

The Dragonglaive
Celes didn't know the exact specifics of what to order, which made sense. Caius ordered something himself and then the bartender left to find something that would fit what Celes wanted. She apologized, saying she was tired. Caius smiled and shook his head. She was clearly a bit anxious, and while he understood, he hoped she would find her calm relatively soon. "Don't worry about it. I think that makes two of us" he admitted with a small laugh. Caius was still very much exhausted with everything that had happened. He'd needed a good drink to calm himself down for a little while now. That ceremony had been... Interesting?
"You'd think sleep would come easy after all of that. But I still get chills from the whole Kraken thing. Also thinking the entire Torensten military was about to go for my head because the King wanted to pet Vordun" he brought up sheepishly. Oh, that had been a moment. Dragons were still a sore spot in Torensten, and even King Hremit had looked nervous when he asked. He had clearly just been trying to honor the drake as was due considering its actions, but even for an eccentric for Hremit, those scars ran deep. He had hid his nerves well, that one. It was pretty clear how Hremit had governed for so long. While eccentric, he clearly had a good head on his shoulders and knew how to keep his calm even in the face of something that would terrify most in Torensten. The retainers and military? Not so much. But luckily it worked out, as nerve wracking as it was. And Vordun even managed to win the old King over. But he still needed a drink more than ever.
"So, are you still up for telling me about these friends of yours? No need to shirk details, we've got the night" Caius then brought up with a small smile. Getting her talking might be best for her, he realized. Help her settle down and relax. And he didn't mind how long it might take. She could go for as long as she liked.

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
FF6's party is huge, okay? Massive. Just. Ridiculous.
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Celes hummed. It made sense to her that Caius wouldn’t be able to sleep. Not after what he’d seen. Celes felt shell-shocked enough from her own experiences, and she hadn’t even been part of the fight. She doubted any of it was new to Caius either. Just another nightmare to add to the pile.
”You said they gave something to Vordun, didn’t you? That they’ll let him in the city?” That was something she remembered from the night when he’d come back looking like a drowned rat. Her memories from that day were a little tricky if she was telling the truth. But she thought he’d something like it.
”Well. That’s something good to come out of all of this.”
She twisted her napkin, watching the bartender pull out several bottles that she couldn’t recognize. He mixed something up in a square glass with a few cubes of ice for Caius. He poured something that looked vaguely red into a taller glass for Celes. She wondered dimly what it was. She supposed she’d find out soon.
”My friends? Right. I did say that, didn’t I?” Her eyes trailed up in thought. ”Well, they’re...Interesting.” How else to describe them? All of them at once? They were just about the most eclectic crew she could imagine.
”I told you that I was nearly executed by the empire, didn’t I? For trying to stop another general from poisoning a city?” If she hadn’t told him then she had now. What a conversation starter. ”Well, I was rescued by an insurgent that was spying through one of our conquered cities. That was Locke. I think I’ve mentioned him before. Anyway, he helped me escape and invited me back to the Returners. I didn’t have anywhere else to go so I went.”
She twisted the napkin first one way then the other. ”The Returners weren’t exactly friendly given my history, but they warmed up eventually. There was Locke, Edgar, then Sabin of course. Edgar’s his brother. Then Terra, Cyan, and this feral child they’d picked up named Gau. I don’t know why he was there. I guess Cyan felt bad for him.
”After that, we picked up Setzer, Strago, and Relm. I don’t know if I can count Shadow or not, but he came along when it counted. After Kefka, we added a moogle, a yeti, and Gogo. I don’t know what he was. Or maybe she? Gogo never really spoke.”
The bartender came back and set the glasses in front of them. Celes gave him a sheepish smile and took hers, holding it up near her lips without drinking it. She glanced at Caius apologetically. ”I know that’s a lot of names,” she said. ”It’s been a while since I’ve thought about most of them. Let alone Gogo of all people.”

The Dragonglaive
"He got a medal. And yeah, he has free reign to come and go. Not that I'm going to make a habit of it, as you made sure of. But I don't have to play dumb anymore when a giant monster shows up in Torensten and I have to call Vordun" he responded with a small laugh. "I'm actually working on a project for Vordun on my spare time. Call me sentimental, but he saved us out there. A dragon-shoulderplate with our insignia is a small token in comparison to our lives. A reminder that he's one of us. For him, and for those who see him too. Figured it might help impressions, and a bit of armor on top of tough dragon scales can't hurt in a fight."
Indeed, something good had come out of all of this. He could rest easy, just a little bit. In what little time they had that wasn't deep in work though. The Dragonblades' reputation had skyrocketed after the incident with the Kraken.
"Think we might need to start hiring help for paperwork though. I don't think either of us can keep up with it. I don't know how you did it for so long even before the Kraken, much less now."
They were warriors at the end of the day, they weren't built for that. But they tried their best. It had been necessary, after all. But eventually they would need to get a bit of help if either of them were going to keep up with the demand. Or the tugs on their respective sanity. But for now, they had nights like this to help unwind. A chance to get out and relax was rare for either of them, but here they were. Caius' attention shifted to Celes' story. He remembered something about her leaving a really bad empire, but the whole execution bit and the rest of the details might as well have been new knowledge.
That was definitely one way to kickstart a conversation. Caius quirked a brow when she said the other general tried to poison an entire city. Well, it was no wonder she'd left. Though it now sounded like it wasn't so voluntary. He at least remembered the Returners name though. So there was Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Terra, Cyan, Gau, Setzer, Strago, Shadow and Relm. Also a Moogle, something called a Yeti, and a mute named Gogo.
Caius couldn't help but laugh a little as he brought his drink to his lips. "I'm surprised you remember them all" he admitted as the drink whet his throat. "But it sounds like you cared about them more than you think, if you do. I never had time to remember the names of my comrades. Everyone was always wrapped up in their own thing. so I didn't have much opportunity. Didn't bother me much at the time. Kinda does nowadays in a weird sorta way, but not much I can do about that."
He'd changed, hadn't he? Hearing Celes talk about all of this struck a chord with him that he hadn't been equipped for a few years ago. It was weird. He never thought he'd be here.

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Caius was surprised she remembered all of them, and Celes guessed he wasn’t wrong when she listed them off like that. They were a lot of names to remember, and not all of them had really spoken to her before. Still, there was something about living crammed on the same airship that meant you had to get friendly fast. Or at least ambivalent.
”I had to find them after the world went to ruin. Kefka, you know.” She finally sipped from the glass at her lips and struggled not to make a face. It wasn’t bad, exactly, but it had the same hard taste of alcohol that she’d tried everywhere else. It was also heavy, a little like syrup, and tasted like some kind of tropical fruit juice on top of that. A boozy, heavy, fruit syrup. It wasn’t really worth making a fuss over.
”It had been a year since then, and every one of them had something else to worry about. And they made me solve it before they’d come along. I guess once you’ve lost everything, you hold on to whatever you have left.”
Celes lowered her glass. It was better not to smell it.
”I didn’t know all of their names before that, but I guess it sticks once you’ve helped them out of a haunted house or a cult or whatever else. Cyan was obsessed with some girl who sent letters thinking he was her lost lover. I found Setzer drinking himself into a hole, and Locke…” There it was again. Why did she ever bother bringing him up at all? ”He was after an esper that could bring back the dead. It didn’t work, exactly, but he got to talk to her for a few minutes. He kept her body preserved in a basement somewhere. It was an...interesting choice.”
She slammed down another swallow of wine, making sure not to smell it this time. People snapped after living through something like that. That’s what she told herself, anyway.
”So that’s them in a nutshell, I guess. I’m not sure I’d call them friends, but they were...something.” She’d never really laid it out that way before. When she said it all together, it sounded like she’d joined up with a bunch of crazy people. ”What about you? There has to be someone you remember.”

The Dragonglaive
There were a lot of names to remember, but Celes remembered them all nonetheless. Not an easy task, even if she didn't seem to think it a big deal. She continued to tell her story, and Caius listened attentively as he sipped his drink here and there, little sips just to keep his mouth whetted as she talked.
Once you've lost everything, you hold onto what you've got left.
He smiled slightly. "Don't I know it" he almost whispered. He had nothing left when he first lost his family. Nothing but the sword his father had given him to train with. Then he had the Kingsglaive, and then that was gone. And that time, he hung onto the one thing he had -- the hope he could return to his old life. He held onto it until it faded away into nothing. The smile kept on as she talked about how people only came to help her once she helped them. Of course. Even during an apocalypse, everyone was preoccupied with their own problems and didn't think practically until they took care of number one first. Didn't he know it? As a Kingsglaive especially, he saw it so many times.
Though the smile faded when she got to the part about this Locke keeping his lover's body in the basement. He could deal with temporarily resurrecting the dead for a chat. He'd seen it. She knew he'd seen it. But keeping their body locked up for who knows how long? That was an... Interesting choice, indeed.
He didn't speak on it. He just drained the rest of his drink, slammed it straight down, and then ordered a new one.
She finished her story, and it sounded like she'd been through quite a bit. More than he'd known originally. It was kind of nice to learn all this about her, getting to learn new things even after spending over a year together as they had. He wanted to give more commentary on her story, but... Hopefully it'd come to him later. Then she asked her own question, and he scratched his head, unsure of where to go on that one.
"Hmm... Hard to say. There were people I'd worked with in passing. The King Noctis, obviously. He had retainers, Prompto, Gladiolus and Ignis, the Marshal Cor... But I never really had a relationship with them of note. No crazy apocalypse stories, they were just the more prominent of the lot I worked with due to their positions. Uhh... I think I remember a Glaive named Vanora. Spoke to her once or twice, she was nice I guess. And... That's about it I guess. Boring, I know. But..." he trailed off, and sighed. "I... Did not talk much. Didn't know how. Didn't have... Didn't have it in me, I guess. Not at the time anyway. I couldn't find it in me to trust people, or let people in or even have a relationship with those people. I might have come around to it eventually, but it was taken from me before I could even try. So that was something I had to pick up in Zephon, working by myself again as an independent. But I never..."
His drink was slid to him and he gave a quiet thanks before taking a swig. All his drinks tasted and felt the same at this point, but he didn't mind.
"I guess I never expected to... Well, be where I'm at now. Sitting here at a bar, trading stories with someone that..."
Even with a bit of alcohol in his system, Caius remembered his wording blunders when discussing the two of them. He didn't know if he could save himself from disaster, especially now, but he'd try.
"... Someone I trust. Someone I feel... Comfortable talking about this stuff to. I like to tell stories these days, but... This is a little more personal than the big heroic tales I tell on the road to entertain people. Never really imagined myself being in this position. If that makes sense at all."

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
[attr=class, bulk] Celes sometimes forgot how introverted Caius could be. He was awkward, she knew that only too well, but she couldn’t imagine him actively avoiding friendships. Not with anyone he worked with, and not with anyone else either. The Caius she knew was always rushing to help, always taking jobs, always trying to get people back on their feet. He made friends in a way that made her jealous sometimes, and it was hard to think that she’d had the most previous social experience between them.
Someone more awkward and ill-equipped than her? That was sad, really.
”I’m sorry,” she said because that felt like the right thing to say. ”We really have changed, haven’t we? Both of us?”
Her life in that ruined world felt like a lifetime ago. Her time at the empire -- two lifetimes. She had a lot of questions about where she’d ended up and why and how, but she knew one thing for sure. She wasn’t the same person that she had been before.
”I know all about your heroic tales,” Celes said, smirking. ”I never would have thought you’re someone that has trouble with people. Then again, I never would have thought that I could end up being...I don’t know. Good.” Celes braced herself then sipped the wine again, making sure not to breathe through her nose. It was better that time. Still a little thick. Still strangely spiced. But better.
”How would you feel? If we ran into Vanora or…” What were the names again? ”The others? It was a shock seeing Sabin again. I brought him here in an instant, but I know he lives a different life than mine. I trust him with my life, but I don’t really know him that well.” She glanced at him. ”It almost didn’t feel right. Mixing the then and the now. Would you want to look for them?”
