Final Fantasy Adventu is a roleplaying forum inspired by the Final Fantasy series. Images on the site are edited by KUPO of FF:A with all source material belonging to their respective artists (i.e. Square Enix, Pixiv Fantasia, etc). The board lyrics are from the Final Fantasy song "Otherworld" composed by Nobuo Uematsu and arranged by The Black Mages II.

The storm has raged for fifteen days and fifteen nights with no end in sight. The docks are swept by the crashing waves, and you have to grab the creaking wooden posts to withstand them. You are soaked through to your bones, shivering, breathless. The rain assaults your eyes, leaving only blurry shapes through the gale.
At the end of the dock, a ship rides the coastal waves. The sailors scramble to prepare it for the harrowing task ahead. The wood creaks. The ropes thrash in the wind. After some time, the boarding ramp is lowered, and they usher you on board.
Many have been lost to these waters and the fiends that lurk within. As the ship makes its unsteady way out of the darkened harbor, it feels almost certain that you will be the next to join them.
Torensten is in a state of emergency, and for your own reasons, you’ve heeded the call. King Hremit has worked tirelessly with the sages at the University of the Magi to supply you with aid. Firstly, they’ve cast protective charms on the ship, hoping that when activated, they will counteract the corruption and still the surrounding seas for exactly an hour. Secondly, they’ve fashioned a spotlight made of unquenchable fire and attached it to the mast so that you can see through the blackened night. Finally, pendants were crafted using shards excavated from the Metaia Temple’s Earth Crystal. With these, your ship should be able to reach the Kraken as intended.
All of these feel like nothing but worthless trinkets as the coast disappears from sight and there is nothing but rolling waves and the deep bellow of thunder. You lost your sister ships some time ago, and you can only hope that they too will find their destination safely.
Until then, there are only your fellow adventurers and the sailors rushing about in a constant state of urgency. Though the pendant guides you, there is no end in sight.
Despite her usually selfish motivations, Yuffie was all about helping people in need. So when the call for help arrived from Torensten, she was quick to answer it. That there was a fairly nice monetary reward also helped, of course. Still, had she known it would involve going onto a ship in the middle of a raging storm, she might not have been quite as eager to jump at the call to adventure, because, once again, her old friend motion sickness was rearing its ugly head. Granted, it wasn't quite as bad as it used to be, and between that and some helpful medicine from a member of the crew, she was faring a lot better. Even if her stomach still felt like it was in the middle of doing Olympic-level gymnastics.
At least she was managing not to barf everywhere. Even a little progress is still progress.
Still, as if all of that wasn't bad enough, She officially became worried when everyone lost sight of the rest of the ships. Alone at sea in the middle of the raging storm? That's about ten pounds of "NOPE" in a five pound bag. She'd rather be back in Midgar during Meteorfall. At least she was on solid ground for that. No risk of dying a horrible, watery death. Granted, being crushed by a giant space rock isn't much better in hindsight, but the point is that Yuffie really doesn't like the sea. At all. And she wasn't exactly being subtle about her dislike of all this water, either. Shockingly enough, she wasn't complaining out loud, but it was still obvious from watching her.
Of course, if they actually made it to the Krakken, she'd be more than able to put on her game face and fight at 100% seriousness. Since she was here, she was determined to give it everything she had, after all. That, at the rate things are going, that was beginning to look like a very strong "if". Letting out a weary sigh, Yuffie quietly muttered under her breath, her voice absolutely dripping with sarcasm.
"Great...lost at sea in the middle of a storm...what's next? A Weapon showing up out of nowhere? Maybe pirates! Wouldn't that be lovely!"
If only she knew.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
”Man the sails! South-south-west! You! On deck! And have the lifeboats at the ready!” Faris climbed the riggings himself, muttering curses as he went. He knew the sea’s rage like he knew an old enemy. The sting of salt, the barrage of wind and water. He spat out a mouthful of rain and kept climbing, the ropes rough and twisted in his hands.
This wasn’t exactly how he’d pictured his return to the sea.
What had started as a storm had quickly escalated to a hurricane. Faris had smelled it on the wind, and he’d shivered. Part of him had urged him to flee. The other part, the thinking part, knew that the city would need him. Whatever was about to happen, the kingdom wasn’t ready. No kingdom ever was.
His expectations had been met in spades. Wicked waves had swept whole docks away. Flooding had flattened coastal houses and carried their inhabitants out to sea. He’d spent a whole two days driving his spear into a race of oversized crabs that had swarmed the beaches. The city needed someone like him, he knew, but he couldn’t have ever expected just how true that was.
”A fool’s job if I’ve ever seen one,” Faris muttered as he anchored himself at the sails. This storm was the kind of nightmare that would wake a sailor screaming. It was the kind of storm that trapped you, spinning and gasping until the rain had cleared and you were left wondering exactly what fates had spared you. If anyone else had asked him to set sail in this kind of weather, he’d have laughed in their faces, except…
”Out of the way! You’ve got the hands of a cuttlefish!” Faris edged another sailor sideways and grabbed the knot for himself, gritting his teeth as he pulled against the wind tightened the rope against it. Every muscle strained to popping and he let out a sharp yell of adrenaline that threatened the very thunder itself. In seconds, the knot was tied safer than it ever had been before, and Faris let out breath.
His heart was hammering. They couldn’t take this much longer.
”Where are you, you overgrown octopus?” He searched the shrouded horizon with a snarl. ”I’ll drive a spear straight through you, and call you calamari!”
Rinoa had woke up in the middle of nowhere, got lost in a forest, arrived in a town with no money to support herself... and now she was all wet! The weather had taken a bad turn and it hadn't let up in what felt like forever at this point. Angelo shook herself off again, spraying water everywhere, though it didn't help as the down pour was as strong as ever as they boarded the ship to go fight some ancient evil and/or find some crystal. Fighting terrible beasts bent on the destruction of civilization as they knew it? Old news. Been there, done that. But it was going to help people, stop all the rain, and there was a reward for their services. So why not sign up? This job would be easy! If only it weren't raining so much...
Once on the boat, Rinoa found shelter within the decks from the cold wet that threatened to soak of molecule of her existence. Much better. She took a towel to dry her and Angelo off and decided it would be best if she stayed here out of both the rain and the crews way as they worked on the ship. Rinoa could hear Faris shouting orders at everyone. She had met the Pirate Prince at that Masquerade ball back in Torensten awhile ago. Who'd have thought she would end up on his ship heading out to fight squid monsters? It was a bit of a reassurance for Rinoa since Faris was one of the very few good things she had run into after arriving in this world. He seemed trustworthy, you know, for a pirate. Okay, he probably wasn't trustworthy at all, but Rinoa felt she, at least, would be safe. Their was another person too, a girl that seemed to be around Rinoa's age. Rinoa found her not looking so good. Rinoa headed over to her.
"Um, are you doing alright?" Rinoa asked. Maybe the girl was nervous. Angelo walked over and sniffed at the girl.
The Kraken that your ship was sent to engage has yet to appear, and the roar of the storm puts a stop to making much headway in finding the beast. Before all hope seems lost, though, shouts are heard that something has been spotted in the horizon...
"Ship!" a lookout calls. "It is a ship!"
A ship? Perhaps it is one of your sister ships! Being reunited would at least give you an edge if the Kraken were to appear. The lookouts wave and hail the approaching ship, but the hollering suddenly stops...
... As cannon fire rains upon your ship, directly hitting the deck. Wood splinters fly everywhere, equipment is sent off its hinges forcing you to dodge or potentially be sent overboard. The ship's volley is unyielding, and the closer the attacking ship gets, you may spy the crew working tirelessly to prepare the next wave. This was no accident, your ship is under attack!
As the sailors scramble to keep the brig together and man the cannons to defend themselves, what will you do? Will you take the cannons, repair the sails, or perhaps just try to survive until the ship can close in?
Yuffie quietly watched as Faris rather enthusiastically, and with great gusto, commanded the men of his ship. Or at least she was assuming it must have been his ship, with the way he was barking out orders and carrying on. Either that or he was used to this sort of thing and was quick to take charge as the situation became more dire. Regardless, he was clearly in his element, and she didn't dare do anything that might get in the way of his captaining. Though she did let out a small chuckle at his rather colorful threat, which had her briefly wondering if calamari from a gigantic demon-squid with control over water would be any good. Not that eating anything was on her to-do list at this exact moment.
She then turned to the concerned Rinoa as she approached her, asking if she was alright. So it was that obvious huh? And here Yuffie thought she was managing to go an okay job of hiding how miserable she felt. Normally, this would be her cue to boast about how great she was and that she was perfectly fine, insisting that Rinoa was just imagining things in spite of how obvious it was. She wasn't really feeling it at the moment though. So in a rare moment of sincerity, she just nods quietly "Never was very good with boats...but I think I'll manage. Thanks, though." She was, admittedly a bit touched that the other woman was showing her some concern despite them being total strangers.
However, that moment of extremely brief respite was cut even shorter when, of all things, actual pirates showed up. At first glance, she thought that they had found one of the other ships again, as it was too far away and the rain was too heavy for her to get a good look at it. She was instantly proven wrong when they started opening fire. "Oh come on! I wasn't being serious!" She said, remembering the muttering she was doing earlier. Either way, she was pissed now. Brandishing her fuma shuriken, a six-bladed throwing star/boomerang infused with materia to give it a magical boost, she lets out a heavy sigh and begins focusing to cast a spell.
"Matra Magic!"
Seemingly shooting out from her back and curving over her to fly toward her target, a barrage of magical bolts of energy, each one taking the shape of small missiles despite being magical in nature, is sent hurling at the pirate ship. Rather than targeting anyone on the ship, she aimed at the vessel's hull, aiming to return the favor from when they started opening fire and, hopefully, distracting the pirate crew long enough to get their bearings straight and start returning fire with their own cannons.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris didn’t see the ship at first. He was too focused on their set course to notice what loomed to the southeast. He didn’t notice, in fact, until there were shouts from the sailors. ”Ship! It’s a ship!” Faris tensed and squinted through the gale. It was hard to make out anything with the rain whipping his eyes, but as he raised a hand to shield himself, he saw it. A dark shadow with a rising mast. His heart sank. What was another ship doing out here? Was it one of the others, turned around by the storm?
But in his heart, he knew. The rest of the fleet would be lit by their fiery spotlight. And there was only one reason to go sailing in this weather.
”Turn course!” he shouted. ”We’ve been spotted by-!”
Boom!
The cannonfire shuddered under the storm, loud as thunder, and then he heard the whistle of the incoming artillery. Faris gave a shout of alarm as it slammed into the deck, wrecking it with a flying mass of splinters and debris. Sailors were crying out in alarm. They scurried about like panicked ants, and still the ship was on them like a shark on a fresh kill.
Faris’ stomach dropped. Pirates.
He cursed, scrambling down the mast as quickly as his feet would take him. ”Change course!” he shouted. ”And turn off that damn flame! We’re like sitting ducks!”
”Man the cannons!” The captain -- the real captain -- bellowed his orders over him. Compared to the roaring beast at the helm, Faris’ words were just whistles on the wind. ”We’ll take the fight to them!”
”Are you daft?!” Faris turned on his heel, aghast. ”Those are pirates! They’ll tear through us in an instant! This ship’s not built for a fight!”
”I’ve faced pirates in my time,” the captain said. ”And this is my ship. Stand down or I’ll have you taken below deck!”
Faris cursed viciously, turning towards the darkened waters. The pirates were gaining ground, and his own cannons wouldn’t be in range until they’d already taken on water. One of the girls they’d brought aboard cast some kind of spell that shot out into the night. Well, it was something.
”Augh! I’ll take them on myself if that’s your word!” Faris felt for his crystal and surged with its power. The ninja class wouldn’t do him a lick of good. A red mage’s spells just weren’t strong enough to reach the ship at this distance. A dragoon it was then. He wasn’t fond of the idea of driving his spear into the deck, but by the time he could jump at anyone, their own ship would be totaled anyway.
Maybe if they lasted until the pirates could be boarded. Maybe if the crystal powered him through a melee fight. Maybe if he could commandeer their ship…
All he had to do was out-pirate the pirates.
”Aye, we’ll play that game then.” Faris felt his armor harden around his tunic. He felt his bandanna disperse to be replaced with a crimson red helm. A spear dropped into his hand, and he ran to the two girls on deck. They were bound to be sensible at least.
”There’s not a thing we can do to stop them,” he said. ”You keep on with your spells. Once they’re in range, we’re taking that vessel for ourselves.” He glanced over at them, nodding appreciatively at Rinoa. It was a funny thing, meeting here of all places after that party. He supposed a rebel princess was exactly the kind of woman he needed at his side.
inoa smiled at the girl. Having someone with a queasy stomach reminder her of Watts and was oddly comforting to have before a mission. Now all she needed was someone running up and announcing 'I have the information, sir!' and she'd be right at home. Instead of that though, there was a call of a ship in sight. So what? Didn't they launch a whole whack of ships when they left? It was probably just one of them. Why get so excited?
Then there was a sapping sound as wood gave way to a metal ball. The ship rocked and shuddered as the assault rained down on them. Rinoa shrieked at the first hits. Angelo circled around her with a whimper, helpless to protect her master from giant metal balls of death hurdling from the sky. Heading to the edge of the deck, they could see the silhouette of the ship bearing down on them. What kind of idiots picked a fight in the middle of a storm like this!? Not to mention picking said fight with people who were trying to stop the storm! Bunch of nut jobs, this whole planet.
Yuffie jumped into action and cast a spell that sent missiles at the enemy ship. Hey, Quistis could do that! Did Yuffie know blue magic too? That was cool. Blue magic was interesting, but Rinoa could never do it. She'd seen the things Quistis had to eat to gain spells. Gross. Then Faris arrived and had at some point changed into some armor and was holding a spear. He didn't have that earlier. The man got changed faster then Squall after telling him a ceremony was over. Faris asked her if she was ready for a fight.
"Always!" Rinoa said, making a fist. Angelo barked in agreement, "I was pretty much expecting one when I came along on this mission, but I didn't think I'd be fighting people." she added. How could she help though. She didn't have magic stocked. Did anyone else have any? Yuffie did, but she couldn't draw blue magic. Was there anything else? Focusing on her, Rinoa got nothing. Her equipment on the other hand had several. Weird, but it would do. Oooh, she had haste.
"Cast Haste!" Rinoa cast, and little orbs of energy were pulled from Yuffie's green materia and to Rinoa's hand. Then she cast Haste on Yuffie. This way, Yuffie could focus on attacking while Rinoa used her buff spell for her. Next was a haste for Faris. Then herself. Now she could start casting it on the crew to make them work faster as well.
With a piece of the Earth Crystal in tow, the violent storm, and their focus... The crew were already at risk. Anyone out in that storm would be at risk, but for these pirates, it seemed that the potential rewards were more than worth the risk. The Crystal had given them a chance to survive out here, but it had also painted a target on their back, and that target was now quite literally being shot at.
The shinobi Yuffie cast Matra Magic as her counterattack, the magical missiles serving as the crew's initial counter-attack on the pirates. Some of the missiles struck the ship's hull, starting to knock out the wood and exposing some of the hull, but it wasn't enough to stop it in its tracks. Instead, the ship continued firing, some of the cannonballs knocking into the missiles and stopping them from hitting as they rocked their ship once more... Yuffie would be forced to act as one of said cannonballs was heading straight for her position...
With Rinoa casting Haste on her though, perhaps she would be able to dodge if she saw it coming in time. The pirate Faris meanwhile would be right on the money with his strategy, as another volley of fire was sent their way. This time though, these cannonballs were smaller. They wouldn't do as much damage, but...
As they struck the ship, the sails quickly caught fire.
These had been set aflame, hoping to cripple the ship. With Yuffie needing to defend herself, it would be up to Faris and Rinoa to decide how to put out the flames in short order. Sailors scrambled across the deck, being forced to split up between counter-fire and trying to put out the smaller fires that had broken out across the deck, and the bigger one starting to burn across the sails.
But what was perhaps an even greater threat was quickly approaching... As the enemy ship had used the fire as cover while they began to rapidly pick up speed, heading straight for them...
One of the sailors noticed and called out.
"THEY'RE ABOUT TO RAM US!"
Faris didn't need to worry about boarding. The boarding party was coming to them.
Is it a smart plan or really dumb? Only the DM can decide.
You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Haste was all that saved them. That beautiful, quick thinking rebel princess gave them exactly the boost that they needed. As the cannons fired, Faris watched in horror as the projectile whistled through the air on a direct course towards their position. Towards the loud young girl to be more specific, and for the moment, she seemed rooted to the spot. Time seemed to slow as Faris saw the events unfold, realized what was about to happen, and had a brief moment of helplessness that he would be too slow to stop it.
Until he remembered Haste. Thank you, Rinoa.
He moved in a flash, acting more on instinct than thought as he threw himself forward, grabbing the girl and thrusting them both sideways. Faris grunted as they toppled to the deck, landing hard on the ground. Behind them was an explosion of dust and debris that showered them in wooden splinters. Faris winced. This ship was lost already.
”That was close.” Faris forced himself upright (an awkward thing when he was in full plate mail) and straightened his armor. The scene was in chaos. All around were sailors bustling in a panic at high speeds (hasted -- how much magic did Rinoa have?) and still the enemy ship was coming. Faris winced as there was another crash and the sails caught fire.
It was one thing after another.
”We’re about to be boarded!” Faris shouted at the others. ”I have a plan! Keep your distance from the pirates!”
With that, Faris jumped towards the mast, landing on the narrow beams. The sails were as useless as the ship when it was about to take on water. Still, if something wasn’t done about them, the fire would quickly spread to their already unstable battle field. Faris thrust his spear into the bottom rigging, hopping up each level and taking out the others before the sails hung by a single set of ropes from the top. The captain was yelling.
”What in the blazes are you doing?”
”I’m taking a stand!” Faris nearly growled. ”Now call off the cannons! Our ship’s lost! There’s nothing to do but commandeer the other!”
”Are you mad?!”
”Do it or it’s your tongue I’m taking next!” Faris stood perched at the top of the mast with the sail hung precariously beneath him. He waited for the boarding party -- for just the right moment to take out the pirates, damned what it did to his own ship.
At the moment, he’d cut the last of the ropes, grab the sails, and jump. The force of his crystal powered jump would be enough (he hoped) to propel the flaming sail with him. Then he’d land on the other side, trapping the pirates beneath a tangle of flames.
’It’s almost an ambush,’ he thought. It would serve them right.
