The Captain didn't seem to care as to whether Faris believed him or not. They had a fight to get to, and the Cap did enjoy a fight! Though even he could tell they were up to next to impossible odds. A massive ship, skeletal fighters... It wasn't going to be easy. The skeletons had some semblance of intelligence too. Not as much as a human, but Faris, Yuffie and Rinoa would quickly find that the skeletons were at least capable of understanding basic swordfighting tactics.
The cannonfire stopped even before Faris ordered it -- it appeared that many of the undead had swarmed their ship. Why? The answer was simple, Rinoa would soon find herself the target of many of the skeletons, who realized she was beginning to summon something. The pirates didn't understand what she was doing, but they did their best to buy her time. Captain Redbeard growled low at the sight, and had been about to move back to the main ship in order to fight them off when something forced him to duck down. Because the ship suddenly began to shake violently as of all things, a train crashed against it as it rose from the murky deep.
"By Ramuh's beard! WHAT in blazes is THAT?!" cried Captain Redbeard. Oh no, a horrible storm and a ghost ship wasn't enough to faze the Captain. But a TRAIN? Now that seemed to put a spring in the Captain's step as he quickly rolled to the side to cut down a skeletal foe that tried to take advantage of the chaos. The Doomtrain slammed into the deck of the ship, taking many skeletons with it. But by exposing below deck, Rinoa's Doomtrain had revealed something sinister.
Below the deck was a massive dark Crystal with a forcefield around it. Inside of it, a blue flame raged through the Crystal, almost seeming liable to break out and burn everything to cinders at any time. What was the purpose of it? Well, they didn't have long to think on it, as the crystal began to glow. The flames inside grew bigger, and all of a sudden, the undead they had felled so far were back on their feet. The flames in their raged more than ever, and they struck with more ferocity than before.
But their troubles were still just beginning. For after the Doomtrain disappeared, there posed another question. Where was Yuffie?
The truth of the matter was that Yuffie had jumped aboard the ghost ship in order to aid Faris. The young thief had managed to cast Trine once more, clearing out another group of undead before something came bearing down on her...
... And that was the Doomtrain.
The Doomtrain had been aiming for a group of skeletons, but one thing you have to remember about a train is that it stops for nobody. Yuffie found this out the hard way, as the materia thief found herself yeeted into the air by the Doomtrain, narrowly avoiding being hit by the brunt of its attack as she was sent overboard.
Yuffie would awaken waterlogged and covered in sand. It was coarse and rough and irritating, and it just got everywhere. But she was alive. It seemed that the ocean had been merciful enough to spit her out on a small island. While Yuffie would likely be irritable about being knocked overboard, and by a crazy train of all things, her mood may very well improve when she saw what was nearby. It was a boat. Old, but not entirely decayed and certainly still usable, with a magic crystal from Torensten powering it, which still had enough juice to get her a ways. But it was what was inside the boat that would prove most interesting. The skelefied remains of two sailors, and firearms resting in their skeletal hands. If she dared move the skeletons, she would find that indeed, they were normal skeletons. Not undead. And the holes in their head indicated that they had both been shot in the head by firearms. Why? Well, if she dared investigate further, she would see why. The boat was filled almost from top to bottom with jewels, gold, doubloons and other finery that would fetch a heavy price if sold. It was most likely that these two lads had gone treasure hunting and found what they were looking for. But the both of them turned on each other, and killed each other in the process.
Which meant it was all Yuffie's for the taking, if she could manage to get the boat back to shore.
Luckily for Yuffie, if she looked out far enough... She may very well spot the impressive and very much welcome sight of Castle Aryle in the distance.
Down a fighter and with their opponents seemingly invincible, the odds weren't looking good for our ragtag band of unlikely heroes. Even though some of the skeletons were beset by various status effects thanks to the Doomtrain, there were still so many of them that the group would still find trouble if they didn't find a way to take them down soon. As Faris and Rinoa fought back, the Captain had made his way back up and continued fighting through the skeleton pirates as well. But something caught his eye, and he furrowed his bushy brows.
"Those traitorous little..."
Something Faris wouldn't have been looking at most likely, fighting off the undead as he was, was his own side. But something the Captain noticed was that the two mages from before who had been fighting with his crew, were suddenly now floating over the ground. Their cloaks came off to reveal what the Captain had already realized. The two mages had been replaced by skeletal mages in robes at some point during the fight, and they were concentrating their magic to fire straight at Faris while he was distracted.
Just before the two spells could hit, the Captain picked Faris up by the shirt and yeeted them into the air, taking the attacks himself in the process.
Why?
The answer was simple. If a fighting man were to go down because of the Captain's carelessness and inability to see that two of his own crew members weren't who he thought they were... Well, even he had his own sense of honor. But believe it or not, while damaged pretty bad, the Captain managed to struggle to his feet. He was clearly a tough old guy, despite his flaws.
But no good deed goes unpunished.
A massive cutlass stabbed through the Captain's back, going straight through his chest. The culprit was a gigantic skeleton that had slowly been assembled by the dark Crystal throughout the fight. The captain of the ghost ship, most likely. The Captain's crew began to cry out in distress, beginning to fight harder than ever before as they began to push the ghost crew back, though whenever they defeated one, they soon reformed. Despite this, it was clear they were fighting as hard as they could to get aboard and get to their Captain. Not wanting to be near Rinoa after she summoned a giant spooky train probably helped their motivation as well.
The Captain slumped over onto his knees as the blade was withdrawn. But as pirates began to swarm the giant skeleton, their attacks didn't seem to do much. The skeleton raised its blade to cut them down, but suddenly its blade would be yanked back. It was unclear how the Captain had survived, though by his haggard breaths it was clear he was just barely holding on. Sheer stubborn determination and will were keeping him alive as he struck back and sent the skeleton overboard. It wouldn't stop it forever, he knew, but it was out of the fight for a bit longer.
"Ya need... Ya need to get... The crystal. That infernal monstrosity exposed that crystal! Break it! Its flames look like the ones in the skeletons! It might destroy them! Hurry! No... No time!"
It may very well have been his last command to his crew, who while worried for their Captain, did as ordered. The pirates cut through the skeletons as a unit until they could get to the forcefield. But try as they might, their strikes could never get past the forcefield. It may very well be hopeless...
Between harsh breaths and barely managing to suck in any air, Captain Redbeard drew his blade and tried to move forward and fight. As he did, he tried to get the attention of one Captain Faris across the battlefield.
"You... Hah... Cap'n Faris! I won't pretend ta be the greatest Cap'n in the world. Gods know me mates would be better off wiff a more competent Cap! But they been loyal! To the end, no matter what. I know I have no business asking this o' ye, considerin' the trouble we caused ya. But all I can ask ya, Cap'n Faris... Take care of me boys. They be a bit green an' rough round the edges. But they have heart. They're loyal. All I can ask of ye... Is to fulfill this dream 'o mine. An' that's... To see the dreams 'o these boys through. That... Be the responsibility... Of any Cap'n... Worth his salt."
Nothing would deter Captain Redbeard from the course he had charted. Perhaps he knew deep down that there was no healing the wounds he'd suffered. As he gave this request to Faris, he watched as his crew began to be cut down by the skeletons, as he watched the hope die in their eyes in realizing there was no winning this... The despair as the massive skeleton began to climb back onto the deck...
It was something the Captain could not allow.
Dragging himself across the deck, he began to pull back his trenchcoat. The undead swarmed the Captain as he advanced towards the crystal, and others swarmed on Faris, likely realizing throughout the fight that he was a threat to their crystal as well. With his last bits of strength, Captain Redbeard fought like a demon possessed, cutting through the undead as though they were butter. He placed his hands on the forcefield, and it began to electrocute him violently. The other pirates tried to get to him, but there was no getting to him with the sea of skeletons before them. The Captain fought through as he pulled out some kind of mechanism. And with his trenchcoat pulled back, it was time to see why.
Every pocket was lined with explosives.
The Captain looked back one last time at his crew, as they fought like men far greater than they to reach their Captain with all they had. And he smiled one last smile as he raised his hand.
"Live well."
With that... He pulled the trigger.
KABOOM!
"CAPTAIN!"
Several of the pirates screamed in agony as the explosion rocked the ship. The ship itself didn't seem to take much damage, as though the area around the crystal were made of something unbreakable. But one thing had changed.
The forcefield was down.
A smoking body hung near the exposed crystal, and this time... It wasn't getting back up.
One thing stood between them and the crystal now. The giant skeletal monster. Armed with two cutlasses and a suit of armor, the 12 foot tall undead creature seemed to know that their very existence may well hinge on the Dark Crystal. The undead aboard the pirate ship began to make their way back to their own ship, seeming to realize they needed to make a last stand.
Faris was so lost in the chaos of the battle that he didn't even notice what was happening lol
You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Glug glug glug.
Faris had hardly spoken before he heard that strange noise. The ship rocked unsteadily and he hopped away from the approaching skeleton crew, trying his best to find his balance. His sea legs prevailed, but it wasn’t easy, and he saw some of the undead stumble. It was the perfect chance for attack, but Faris didn’t dare take it. He knew the way the ship turned. It was the same as when Syldra passed underneath, waiting to surface with a deadly wrath.
Something was coming from beneath the waves. Something big.
Chug-a-chugga chug-a-chugga CHOO!
There was a terrifying screech of a whistle and something materialized over the deck like a path made of iron and then he saw the beast, bursting from the waves with an explosion of salt and ocean spray. It had a skull-like face, burning with hellish flame, and a body like a great metal serpent. It charged over the deck, its path clunky and grasping over the bucking wood. It sent up splinters like the crash of the ocean waves, charging straight for its undead quarry.
Faris stood there, frozen and gaping as the great devil tore across the ship deck, leaving a trail of fleshless bodies in its wake. The more fortunate were flung aside like ragdolls, some hitting the deck and some tossed into the water. The less fortunate were pulverized beneath its massive weight. As quickly as it had begun, the hellish thing charged over the side, its horrid tail flicking behind it like a snake retreating to its hole.
Faris stared. He stared for a long time. Then the battle commenced.
”Woh!” Faris saw a flash of fire and he skipped backwards, turning to make himself less of a target, and then something grabbed him by the front of his armor and thrust him into the air with a force that he could only call superhuman. The fire burst below him into a hulking human figure. Faris twisted himself in the air, managing to right himself before he could fall into a heap on the deck, but he didn’t have quite enough time to take control of his imperfect launch. He felt the weight roll against his right ankle. He winced.
”Are you mad?” he cried at the hulking figure in front of him. The man was still flickering with the embers of the flames. It was a mad thing to do, taking that hit and throwing him off balance. Maybe Faris wouldn’t have dodged it in time, but maybe he would have. It was disrespectful was what it was. He growled at the staggered man, ready to help him put out the flames anyway, when something came behind the man and struck him straight through.
Faris didn’t really know what was happening. He was still too disoriented from being tossed around like a ragdoll. But a man was down and he felt a surge of rage overtake him as he charged forward, jumping up to bash the offending skeleton over the side of the head with his spear. It stunned the great thing, but didn’t send the whole skull flying like he’d hoped. He saw the other pirates crying out and struggling to get over to the deck, but Faris would keep the devil occupied until then. It had just run a man through. And Faris was on the offensive.
He soon found that the skeleton was more resilient than it looked, but Faris was seeing red. He hardly cared, and as his blood pumped harder, he kept on with a singular purpose. Revenge. Make it pay and keep it from raising a sword on anyone else again. Faris was a Warrior of Light, after all. A bearer of the crystals and traveler of the Rift. If he couldn’t do it then what chance did anyone else have?
He’d keep it busy at least.
The blood was pounding in his ears. He wasn’t one for conversation, and though he thought some sputtering words were spoken to him from the injured man, now wasn’t the time. He’d tend to him once the threat was good and done with. Soon enough, the pirates poured in to join him in his fight, but they couldn’t do much more than batter the devil about the shins.
”Leave it to me! You’ve got better worries to tend to!” Faris’ call went on deaf ears, however. The crew was determined. The bunch of louts.
Just when Faris thought he might be outmatched and outnumbered, the ship exploded.
”Augh!” The force of it knocked Faris out of the air from where he’d been angling his jump and he hit the deck hard, tumbling across the planks until he crashed into an arrangement of barrels. Faris winced, sitting up as spots dotted his eyes. There had been some kind of explosion, true as he stood. But where had they stored the gunpowder? Shouldn’t it have been soaked through from the rain?
Magic. That was as good an answer as any.
Faris staggered to his feet, ready to take on the behemoth and all its undead crew for another round. The pirates were fleeing now back to their own ship, maybe sensing the great frigate might sink. After an explosion like that, it very well might, but they’d need cover if they were to bridge the distance. Faris could make a quick retreat with his dragoon’s jump if it came to it. Probably.
So he squared off against the devils, the details of the last few events so chaotic that it was undoubtedly lost on him. None of it mattered. He’d keep fighting if it meant a distraction for the others.
There was still the princess and the ninja (as far as he knew). The rebel princess, at least, had sharp eyes and a good head on her shoulders. She’d take the lead while Faris did the rough and tumble work. Just like when he’d fought beside Lenna.
Faris shook the sea water out of his hair and made another jump. Now was no time to think.
inoa watched as Doomtrain came forth and tore it's way through the enemy (and some of the ship, whoops) most effectively. All things considered that went pretty well.
"Yes!" she exclaimed excitedly while most everyone else was left in stunned silence. She turned toward Yuffie, only to find the ninja had vanished (as ninjas do). Now where had she run off to? Rinoa didn't have time to search however as the action came forth again and a whole scene played out with the Captain of the pirates and some monstrous beast of an undead. Rinoa felt like she had walked onto the set of a pirate drama movie. What was even happening anymore? Not enough time to make sense of all of that either, as the Captain of the pirates blew himself up, destroying the shield around the weird crystal that was housed within the ship. That captain had said to destroy it because it looked like the undead souls in the skeletons. Made sense to her.
When the hell did it become normal to think about undead souls and living skeletons anyway? Probably somewhere in the middle of time compression. Geez, her life was weird.
Faris seemed to be throwing himself at the big guy (and possibly more, how much did he think he could handle alone?), but that still left the problem of the flying undead mages and other skeletons. The crew was still fighting and the pirates seemed enraged by the death of their captain. Rage was probably good. As for the crystal, well it was getting wet now so maybe she that would help out.
Rinoa let out a whistle and Angelo ran ahead of her as cover to tackle and attack any skeletons out of her way so she could get closer to the crystal. As they passed through the hoard she used Draw to pull Thundara from the enemy mages and stock some up. Angelo hung by her legs to watch her back as she faced the crystal.
"Thundara!" she cast, and summoned the lightning against the crystal.
Thundara roared across the crystal as Faris and the pirates kept the attention of the monsters. Without the shield, the crystal shattered into pieces. And with it, the ship's glow began to darken. The similarly colored flames within the heads of the skeletons began to extinguish, as one by one they began to crumble into pieces. Something exploded inside the ship, and very quickly it began to sink.
The pirates had managed to salvage the body of their Captain. He had been reckless and a bit short-sighted, but he had taken care of them when they needed a place to go and had families they could no longer feed after past events had left them without homes or jobs. He had been a bit dull-witted and needed help reading a map, but the Captain always took the smallest share of the treasure for himself. He had wanted for nothing but to enjoy the open sea. And they would give him a burial on the open sea when they were back to shore. It was the least they could do. Even pirates had their honor.
Victory was theirs. As the enemy ship disappeared beneath the waves, it completely faded from their vision, perhaps even faster than a ship normally would. It left no trace behind, except that of a large group of chests that soon came bubbling up to the surface. The curious crew began to haul the chests up.
But it wasn't long after, that their ship began to rock uncontrollably. The storms had drastically worsened without warning. Something had upset the oceans gravely, and it intended for all unfortunate enough to be caught in their grasp, to perish. The Kraken had died, but with it, it had summoned every inch of malice beneath the waves to take its slayers with it. Both their crew and the pirates alike began scrambling around the deck, trying their best to keep the ship together. It had been damaged pretty heavily during the battles, and likely wouldn't last forever. But if they could get it moving, they might just be able to make it to shore before the storm overtook them.
But it would take almost a miracle to pull it off. Either an incredibly skilled captain at the helm, or a concentrated team effort. Possibly even both.
[attr=class, bulk] Whatever that flashy round of magic had been, it seemed to do the trick. He saw Rinoa bring magic to herself then lift her arm with a massive burst of lightning. And that was the end of that. Whatever foul curse was keeping the undead walking was broken, and they all clattered to the deck, a pile of lifeless bones. For a moment, Faris could only stare at the crumpled heap of the behemoth he’d been fighting. Then he let out a barking laugh. ”If that isn’t a way to go!”
He looked back at the fellow princess and grinned, throwing his arm up in the air to give her a wide wave. It seemed it was over more or less. Except…
The deck of the ghoulish ship gave a sudden shudder. Faris cursed as he caught his balance, eyes darting in every direction for the cause. Something below the deck had caught fire (gunpowder?) and the ship was none too happy with it. He saw the wood of the deck splinter. He saw the ship give a massive buck against the waves. He saw the fiendish pirate crew scramble back to safety, and he gave one final jump, thrusting himself into the air just as the ground below him splintered and crumbled into the sea. He landed heavily on the deck of the remaining ship and watched the undead frigate as she tore herself in two.
His eyes were stormy. The skies were dark. He thrust a handful of loose, sopping hair over his shoulder, sweeping it from his eyes.
He only allowed himself a moment to think. Not to mourn, but to think. It seemed a mighty coincidence that they should be waylaid by brigands only to be found by the undead crew a wind’s breath later. Then there was what to do with the pirates themselves.
He had a lot to think about. Later.
Pirates or no pirates, there was still the storm to contend with, and it was none too happy with them. The crew was busy hauling up some chests that had been loosed in the wreck, and Faris shot them a dangerous look. ”Leave it!” he said. ”It’s your necks you should be saving!” He scanned the situation, eyes narrowed as his sailor’s instincts took hold.
No more fighting, he hoped. There was only the rage of the sea. And that was perhaps the mightiest devil of all.
He dispelled the crystal’s power in a great flash of light, leaving himself in his tunic -- lightweight, breathable, without any armor to drag him into the depths should he be swept overboard. He barked orders at the remaining sailors and pirates alike, confident that his tone alone would spur them to action. He told them to man the sails in just the right angle of the wind -- not too slow as to strand them but not too fast to capsize them either. The helmsman, it seemed, had been lost in the battle. Without him, not one of the louts could make heads nor tails of the ship’s controls. Faris cursed and hopped behind the wheel, thrusting it first one way then the next to keep it on course and fight the ever-stronger might of the waves threatening to topple them.
He didn’t know the sailors’ skills or talents. He could only direct them the best he could, but he knew one princess who could make the difference.
”You’re a mage, aye?” That’s what he’d seen at least. There’d been all manner of spells at her disposal -- an impressive feat, he’d thought. ”Keep the sailors moving! Cura, haste, even reflect could do! The storm’s not through with us yet!”
ith the flash of the lightning she had summoned the crystal shattered into uncountable pieces. Rinoa looked around and watched as the skeletons collapsed around them. Everyone cheered and Rinoa hopped up and down on the spot with glee at the victory. They had won! It was finally over!
Crack.
The ship lurched and Rinoa fell over on her hands and knees as the ship around her began to crack and splinter. Oh, was that crystal also holding the ship together too, just like the skeletons? Whoops... The crews wasted no time in scampering back to the pirate ship and Rinoa picked herself up and followed suit, not wanting to create another moment of needing Squall to save her, especially since he probably wouldn't show up this time. She and Angelo managed to grab the rails of the pirate ship as the ghost ship sank and pulled themselves up. Rinoa leaned forward, breathing hard as she attempted to catch her breath. The pirates scrambled about but then Faris' voice called out, giving orders to all of the wayward crew. For her part, Rinoa just tried to stay out of the way. What did she know about sailing? Best she left it to the actual sailors. That was, until Faris turned to give her instruction too, asking if she was a mage.
"Er..." was about all Rinoa got out before he continued. Yeah, that wasn't exactly how it all worked where she came from, "Well, I have a few hastes to throw around, but that's about it aside from Biora and Thundara and I don't think poison or more lightning is going to help anything right now. I can only use magic I draw from other people." she said. It was Yuffie that had been the caster of the group, Rinoa had just borrowed some spells off of her. Without her or those skeletal mage pirates (or whatever they were in the end) she didn't have any more resources to draw on except what she had stocked during the battle. That gave her nine hastes to work with, but no idea who to start casting on.
Captain Faris had taken command, and it didn't take much for the men, both Torenstenian and pirates, to fall in line. Their fierce demeanor could scare the pants off a Behemoth, much less a group of men, and they had no qualms with heeding their words. The chests would be dropped on Faris' command, their lives would come first. And they could always come back for it when they were, you know. Alive.
The sea was a wretched beast, and one that had been incensed by the Kraken's magic. The ship had taken a fair bit of damage, but it would hold for at least awhile longer. Water splashed onto the deck, threatening to carry members of their party overboard at every turn, the winds impeded their attempts to steer and the sails were ripped at constantly, requiring constant repair. Luckily the cargo hold was stocked well. The former captain may not have been a strong reader, but he did at least come prepared. It was clear that the pirates had been prepared for a long and grueling fight against whoever might have intended to go against the Kraken, and had the group not taken advantage as quickly as they had when the advantage was theirs, the pirates may well have managed to outlast them. But once it had been taken to a boarding battle, nothing the pirates could have done would be enough.
But what preparation they did have supplied sails to replace those the winds were slicing. Materials for patching holes and leaks, and water to keep the men going. Through their resources, Faris' skills as a leader and through Rinoa's Haste magic, the crew would be able to hold their own. It was a long and grueling hour of fighting, but it felt like forever before the clouds began to part. The rains would dry up and the whistle of the wind could only be heard by the listening ear. The Kraken's final bellows had ended, and while the ship was rattled, she had held together through it all.
Soon, the crew would find themselves back on the shores of Torensten. While another group had found and killed the Kraken, Captain Faris and Rinoa would be heralded for taking down the dreaded Ghost Ship, a legend that had started back when the seas had seemingly been safer to traverse. It appeared that many a ship had been lost to some sort of phenomenon, with the few survivors speaking of a sort of ghost ship that arrived in the worst of storms. Unabated by the loosing winds, the Man 'O War had unleashed hellfire upon unsuspecting ships, destroying all in their wake. While the guard wasn't able to do anything with these reports as they were merely rumor, the revelation that it was true came from a sight that some sailors recognized. A shard from the Dark Crystal that had been impaled in their ship's figurehead after it had been destroyed. No longer glowing, the shard appeared to have lost its power, and posed no threat. It would be up to the pirates and whoever captained them next as to what to do with it.
But with this proof, the group would find themselves celebrated. Heroes, pirates and all. While the King was busy preparing a ceremony for the Kraken slayers, a healthy sum of gil would be granted to all those involved for what they had done. But there was also much mourning to be had. Sailors and pirates alike had lost those they considered brothers. Many tears would be shed on this night.
A few days later, Yuffie would find herself back on Torensten's shore with her bounty. A Yuffie had been mentioned to Torensten's officials in their report, but none knew if she was alive. It would be up to her if she wanted to try and cash on that.
The pirate crew now lacked a Captain, but it didn't stop them from repairing their ship and taking her out to salvage the rest of the treasure. The only indication they had succeeded would be a tender at the tavern Faris frequented stating that something had been left for him. A box full of treasure, their share. Rinoa would be more difficult to track down, but eventually one of the pirates would walk up to her in civilian attire, present her share, and flee. They may be pirates, but they still had some semblance of honor among thieves.
The pirates though, were greatly impressed by Captain Faris. Should he seek them out, perhaps they would be willing to listen. For the time being, a great threat to Zephon's seas had been eradicated, and with the Kraken and the Ghost Ship out of commission, sea travel was hopefully safe once more. For Faris, Rinoa and Yuffie, the question remains. What's next for them?
