inoa's haste spells got every body moving at top speed to counteract the incoming invasion. But the pirates still came and the bombardment pummeled the ship. Yuffie almost got taken out by a cannonball but Faris was able to get her clear in the nick of time. Rinoa watched the whole thing unfold with trepidation, finally letting out a long breath after Faris got the girl clear. too close. And they weren't even out of the fire yet. Rather literally as the sails had caught a flame and were beginning to burn. The whole ship was likely to become a raging inferno in a matter of minutes. Well, wasn't that just great. Rinoa vastly preferred traveling in the Ragnarok. Hell, even Balamb garden was better than a flimsy wood ship pulled along by a piece of fabric!
Faris took charge again, ever the pirate captain. She hopped along the pillar (or mast, or whatever it was called) and cut the burning sail from it. Rinoa on the other hand had no idea what to do. Yuffie was still a bit dazed from almost dying (and possibly still her seasickness, the ship was bouncing about even more now) but she was also the only magic source Rinoa knew of so far.
"Draw!" she commanded as she activated the ability and stocked up on Biora and then some Haste in case theirs ran out. The ship was almost upon them and about all Rinoa could do was check the other sailors for spells. Maybe someone on board had something useful? And maybe the pirates would have something? They were pirates, it stood to reason that some of them might have a spell or two as part of their arsenal that she could mooch. In theory at least. But you would think that people attacking random ships would try to prepare for anything. On the other hand, she didn't really know how magic worked in this world yet. Maybe it was more complicated then she thought and no one knew at thing. That would suck. She really needed to get better prepared for surviving in this world...
The ship was lost, and Faris had the right of it. With the sails catching fire, it would be nearly impossible for them to take the ship back to port, unless either they could take the enemy ship, or by some miracle there were spare sails below deck that hadn't been destroyed in the battle. Holes littered the ship's deck from the previous volleys, so the odds of that were slim. But there was always a chance if they had no choice...
Faris had bellowed a threat befitting of a pirate captain and the seemingly now ex-captain and his crew were in no rush to defy their wishes. They were far from combatants and Faris had specifically been assigned here for their prowess. The crew was not risking it, not one bit. Seems they'd rather risk the pirates and the drink than deal with him. Quite the impression, the Captain had made.
The pirate ship followed up on their final volley by instilling every sail they had and shooting themselves forward, hitting their ship dead on from the side, sending the ship lurching upon impact. Equipment was sent overboard, and the group would have to act quickly if they wanted to keep from being thrown overboard along with them. Yuffie and Rinoa would both find a large box heading their way upon the ship's lurch. If they didn't dodge that...
When the ship managed to level itself, the pirates made their move. Hooks were shot into the sides of the ship, as pirates began swinging themselves forwards. Most of them seemed to be carrying melee weapons or firearms, with the exception of a man and a woman in robes who stayed on the ship. The pirates didn't hesitate, lunging at the crew with full intentions to kill. While some of the sailors had minimal combat experience and were able to either avoid their pursuers or manage to hold them off for a little while, Rinoa and Yuffie would need to bail them out quickly if they wanted any chance of having a crew to get them back home.
Meanwhile, Captain Faris had made her move. Using Jump and the burning sails to his advantage, launching himself and taking the fight to the pirates on their own ship. Several pirates trying to make the jump were taken down by the burning sails, though Faris might need to put out the fire before the wooden ship catches fire. That would be bad.
The gamble paid off in some respect, though. The pirates that hadn't made the jump yet would instead focus on Faris, buying Yuffie and Rinoa some time. What this meant though, was that a good portion of the pirates were now on Faris exclusively. Hopefully the Captain could ward them off, while also making sure the vessel he wished to commandeer didn't catch fire itself.
So much happened all at once that everything in those few seconds was a completely blur. First, Rinoa did...something with one of her materia orbs. She wasn't sure what, but considering she immediately started casting one of the spells from said materia, she could only assume she was somehow pulling the spells out and casting it herself. She could only begin to wonder what that was and how she did it, but those were questions for later. Especially since she looked to the side, only to be caught off guard by the barrage of cannon fire unleashed by the enemy ship. Between still not being in the best physical shape and having been distracted by Rinoa's Drawing of her magic, she was slower than usual to respond, and it was dicey as to whether or not she'd be able to avoid it.
So it was a good thing that Faris came swooping in and grabbed her, pulling her out of the way. It took a moment for it to register in Yuffie's mind what had happened, and once it did, she couldn't help but blush a bit after getting a closer look at the pirate captain. However, she was quick to recover, speaking up in a chipper tone once she was back on her feet. "Thanks, handsome. I've got it from here." She punctuated her comment with a playful and slightly flirty wink. Alas, her fun was interrupted when the pirates decided to ram their ship into the one they were on. So rude. She watched as Faris, with a spear in hand, proceeded to leap from one ship to the other, a move which reminded her all too well of a certain foul-mouthed airship pilot from back in her own world. And all of time she spend hurling over the edge of his ships.
There wasn't time to reminisce, though. Pirates were now preparing to boarding the ship, and while the dashing pirate/dragoon works on commandeering the enemy ship, she and the mysterious girl from earlier, who seemed to be "borrowing" even more spells from her, were left to protect the crew of their own ship. After rather effortlessly dodging the large wooden box that was apparently sent hurling towards her and Rinoa, the pirates quickly started to board the ship and began harassing the crewmates."Not on my watch, assholes." Giving Rinoa a smile and a look that says something to the effect of "let's do this", she moves in, placing herself between the nearest group of pirates and crewmates. First order of business; safeguarding the crew.
She focuses her magic, and soon, all of them, along with herself and Rinoa are enveloped in a bright, golden light that wraps around their bodies like armor. After that, she took a look at the pirates and grinned. Time to mess with these assholes. Taking a deep breath, she once again gathered magic, and spewed out a cloud of black, noxious fumes with the intention of afflicting all manner of abnormal effects against them. Was it gross? Yes. But was it potentially devastating? Also yes. Still, even if it didn't affect all of them, it was bound to serve as a distraction and give Rinoa an opening to do...whatever her thing is. She admittedly knew nothing about her, but based on the fact that she's even here in the first place, Yuffie could only assume she knows her way around a fight.
Summary - Yuffie casts Big Guard, giving herself, Rinoa and the crew members Barrier, MBarrier and Haste. - She then casts Bad Breath, potentially afflicting the attacking pirates with various status ailments, including Poison, Silence, Sleep, Confuse, Frog and Small; will obviously leave it up to the GM to decide if/how many of them are afflicted with these ailments, and whether or not each of them are afflicted with all of the statuses'...it just seemed like a very Yuffie thing to do.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris’ plan worked like a charm. A part of him had hoped that he’d been wrong about the ship’s intentions. Part of him had hoped that maybe they’d be content to fire a few rounds and then be on their own way -- but that was a fool’s part of him. In reality, the ship made a straight course for them, and Faris prepared to jump, readying himself for that exact moment when they boarded and Faris could drop fiery vengeance upon them.
Only he hadn’t accounted for one thing. He’d expected the pirates to pull up alongside them. Instead, they rammed the hull with a vicious speed that nearly knocked him off balance. ”Woh!” Faris threw out his arms, struggling to stay perched on the now bucking mast even with his dragoon’s balance. Then the pirates were coming below him, jumping over the space in droves as they readied their swords and something Faris now knew to be called guns.
He jumped. He’d readied his plan, he had his course of action, and someone needed to do something before they were all left twitching like smashed fish on the deck. So he jumped, and as the air whistled by him, he let out a wild laugh that he felt like a wildfire in his heart. He was in a fight. A real fight. It was a pirate’s duel, winner take all and damn the rest.
How could he not feel alive?
Faris landed with a hard crash of metal on splintered wood. Behind him, he heard the cries of sailors trapped underneath the heavy sails, flailing as they half burned and half suffocated in their tangled prison. There were some that were mid crossing between the ships. Some that were approaching the helpless crew. Still more, he’d taken out on the other side. On the pirate’s own ship. On their…
Wait, he was on the pirate ship now? Faris looked around, slightly alarmed. In his haste, he’d misjudged the jump. With the two ships rammed together, the space between hadn’t been quite what he’d expected. Now he found himself surrounded, a hoard of enemy pirates quickly overcoming their surprise and turning on him. Then there was the sail itself.
Still on fire. Now spread between the old ship and the new. Oh.
Oh.
”Can someone put this thing out?” Faris called over the howling gale and the rain that whipped his cheeks. The rain was a force all its own, but he couldn’t trust it to put out the fire by itself -- not in time to avoid damage to the hull that was. Both ships had already taken cannonfire. They couldn’t afford to slip up even the slightest bit more.
And Faris wasn’t a mage. While he had the crystal’s power to do just about anything he damn well pleased, that didn’t mean he was good at it. There wasn’t a single class he knew well enough to put out a fire like this -- not unless he thought to stab it out. Besides, he had bigger problems to worry about.
”You want to have a go?” Faris spun his spear in his hand, readying it for a fight. There were over a dozen of them. A dozen pirates hardened by battle with a fire in their eye stronger than any sail. Faris didn’t fancy taking them on alone, but he wasn’t just a pirate anymore. He was a Warrior of Light. Savior of two worlds, explorer of the Rift, and the one to put an end to a mad warlock seeking the power of the Void.
Aye, this would do.
He jumped again just as he heard the sound of gunfire popping around him. The bullets whizzed below his feet, and he twisted himself to get a better look below him. There were definitely over a dozen. Maybe a dozen and a half. He spotted the ones with guns (those were the problem) and angled himself in the direction of one in the thick of it. Then he propelled himself down like a rocket, spear first and ready to skewer him straight through.
Which he did. The man was pinned through the chest to the deck which erupted in debris around him, blinding the other men as Faris quickly dislodged his spear, spinning it around to hit them as he thrust it into another man. His plated armor was thick, and he heard another explosion of gunfire that hit him like the tusk of some rampaging beast. The bullet itself glanced off the metal, but he still felt the blow and winced, gritting his teeth as he stumbled from the force.
”Why you slimy, yellow-!” He jumped again, rocketing himself in the air. For the briefest of moment, he was safe from their bullets, moving too fast and too high to be stopped by just about anything. ”-gutless, soft-bellied-!” He spotted him, the one in the right spot to have shot him in the back. He thrust himself down. ”-lily-livered cur!”
he ninja girl Yuffie snapped back into action. Good, they needed all hands for this battle. The pirates rammed the ship with their own causing it to tip back. The ship was already on fire and full of holes thanks to cannonballs, so WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY!? What kind of idiot risked their ship by crashing into their enemy when said enemy was already damaged? What good would it be if they both sank now!?
Bunch of psychos.
The ship was all over the place now and Rinoa did all she could to keep her balance and not slide over the edge. Good thing she wore good boots for this kind of thing. Nice and grippy. Next a large crate came sliding at her and Yuffie. The latter girl made it look so easy to simply hop around it. Rinoa was far less athletic than the ninja, and with the ship off balance it made things all the more difficult. Angelo was able to hold steady with her claws. Seeing the crate going for Rinoa she charged head on with an Angelo Rush to smash it to pieces. Rinoa held her Pinwheel in front of her face as a shield against debris. The raid was next and they were going for the crew. Yuffie gave her a smirk that said everything it needed to. Rinoa grinned back. She was starting to like this Yuffie. The ninja jumped into action, casting what seemed to be Mighty Guard. Then she used the very familiar Bad Breath. She really was a Blue Mage like Quistis! They might already be hit with poison, but Biora was all Rinoa had to work with at the moment.
"Cast Biora!" she called and cast the spell directly from Yuffie's Poison Materia. She targeted the pirate closet to the crew and would start throwing the spell around at their enemies. Meanwhile, Angelo charged forward, sharp teeth at the ready, making to dig them into one man's leg.
Things appeared to be going well so far. The Bad Breath from Yuffie had proven effective...
Maybe even too effective.
The Froggy God had rolled a dice, and Yuffie was able to bring ruin to the entire field with Bad Breath, as they fell to a variety of ailments. One dozed off on the deck, another became hysterical and attacked friend or foe... One even turned into a frog! Some even ended up with a combination of these effects. Either way, many of them had been rendered easy pickings for Yuffie and Rinoa to finish off. Captain Faris meanwhile had been able to deftly evade many of the pirates, his agility forcing them to swap to using firearms which while they had some effect, still wound up being no match for Faris.
Things were going well.
Maybe too well.
Things had a way of coming around, and now appeared to be the time. Both ships would be struck by a massive wave and lurch heavily, both of them nearly capsizing before returning to their normal, albeit shaky positions. The winds grew intense, as the sails threatened to come down on them, and the rains worsened, making vision poor. On the plus side, the rains would put out the fires on the ships.
The sailors that had been ordered around by Faris previously and tried to stay out of the fighting took the initiative now that the crew had managed to rout the pirates so far, moving to activate the Crystal. If they could keep the Crystal safe for a bit longer... then perhaps they would be saved from a watery grave after all.
The situation was getting hectic, but still salvageable. Unfortunately, the crew had forgotten something. The man and woman In Robes, the Mages that had been lurking on the enemy ship. As Faris was focused on surviving the assault from the gun-touting pirates, he had been unable to dispatch the mages, who had taken position and had charged up spells without being detected.
"Fira!"
Two Fira spells were launched at their ship, one blowing a hole through the side and another setting fire to the ship's hull. With it being inside the ship, the storm wouldn't be able to put that one out. Either they needed to find a way to salvage this ship, or find a way to get the sailors on board the other ship, as risky as that might be. Not to mention keeping the crystal safe in the process while the sailors tried to activate it.
Yuffie watched with a cocky grin as a good majority of the marauders fell victim to her potent attack; Marlboros were widely considered to be extremely dangerous for a good reason, and these poor bastards were experiencing it first-hand. Even those who weren't affected were too panicked by what was happening to properly fight back; some being attacked by their own confused allies, some being careful not to step on their transformed allies, and some simply too grossed out by what they just saw Yuffie do to properly respond. Either way, they were in complete disarray, and Yuffie was loving every second of the chaos she had wrought.
Alas, all good things must come to an end, and her moment of enjoyment didn't last long, as both of the ships were hit by a large wave. She managed to avoid getting thrown off by grabbing onto the railing along the side, but the trouble didn't end there. From the other ship that came a fiery blasts, Fira spells, to be exact, that came flying and hammered into the side of the ship they were on. The first blasted a hole into the hole, which was probably not good. But then the second one proceeded to set the ship on fire from the inside; that was definitely not good. "Crap crap crap crap crap..." Stopping to give herself a few seconds to think, she quickly comes up with a plan. Realizing she needs to move quickly, she begins running, calling out to Rinoa.
"Take care of things up here! I'll be right back!"
With that, she heads down into the lower deck of the ship, looking for where the Fira spells had hit. All she could hope and pray that the damage wasn't too extensive. She figured this was probably going to simply delay the inevitable, but with everything going on, they were going to need every second she could buy with this. Once she found where she needed to go and saw the raging fires, she acted quickly. Taking a deep breath as she gathered her magic, she used yet another breath-based attack. But instead of a putrid cloud of death and disease, she instead spewed out a large amount of water that covered a large area which would hopefully be enough to put the fires out.
Just to be on the safe side, she used it twice, wanting to make doubly sure that the flames were completely put out. Or at least reduced to being small enough that she'd be able to easily put them out without relying on extremely powerful water magic.

Summary - Yuffie rushes down to where the spells hit and casts Aqualung (twice, just to be extra sure) to try and put the fires out

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
The others seemed to be handling themselves. Not that Faris had much time to spare them more than a few glances. He was caught in a hard place with hardly a breath in between. He’d planted himself right in the thick of a whole host of pirates. Warrior of Light or not, that wasn’t the best of ideas.
”Not a thing to do for it now.” Nothing but to keep fighting. He took his knocks, wondered if he had the stamina for it, and for not the first time, he longed for his friends at his side. Lenna would keep him going with a few of her spells. Krile would punch out whoever needed it, and Bartz would… do whatever it was that Bartz did. Directing him did about as much good as directing a gale wind.
It was funny, the difference a storm could make. With all the excitement, he’d nearly forgotten the typhoon they’d found themselves in -- not that it would let him completely. He felt its sway as he launched himself in the air. He felt his feet slip on the flooding water across the deck. He felt it sting in his eyes. And then there was the swell.
”Ah!” Faris thrust out his arms, waving them for balance as the ship gave a massive heave. He cursed loudly, unable to do a damned thing as the rest of the pirates toppled over together. But Faris had a set of sea legs rival to none. He grasped the nearby rigging to keep himself upright, grit his teeth against the storm, then took the first opportunity to launch himself into the air. This time, he was aimed for the mast -- the enemy one this time. It’d be hard to balance there with all the tossing and turning, but he needed a better view. He held onto each set of ropes with every perch he found until he was right smack in the crow’s nest.
A pair of startled eyes met his own at the top. Their lookout. Faris grabbed the man by the shirt and yanked him screaming over the side before taking the spot for himself. A vantage point. Aye, that was what he needed.
He could hardly see a thing through the dark and the rain. It pounded on them like something alive, and he squinted through the gale. Their own ship was blazing like a lantern in the night -- like fish in a barrel for a ship of pirates. If that lout of a captain had just listened to Faris and put out the light-! But what was done was done, and he used the brief bit of visibility to his advantage.
His eyes swept the deck. The mages were pulling out the storm-quelling crystal. Good. He’d have to rely on the others to keep it safe for now. What was the greatest threat? And more importantly, where was the pirate captain?
He didn’t have long to think. A blaze caught his eye. How could it have not when it was sent hurtling towards the ship’s hull?
He cursed again -- like a howl into the storm. Mages. There just had to be mages. At the very least, they weren’t hard to find. He followed the arc of the magic to two shadowed figures in robes. Not exactly going for subtlety, were they?
Faris spun his spear in his fingers and jumped. He could make it that far, he thought, and he did. He thrust his spear down, but the wind caught him, and he was thrust too off course to skewer them outright. Instead, he landed between them, his spear bringing up a shower of splinters as he landed. They jumped, startled, and he straightened, shooting them a fierce look.
”Who’s to go first?” He readied his stance. They hadn’t caught even a glimpse of the fight left in him. ”I’ll take you in a breath!”
hings were going well, until they weren't. The storm decided to remind them that it existed, as if they didn't have enough to deal with already. The ship rotated on the wave to angles ships were not suppose to go. As what once was horizontal became vertical, all Rinoa could do was grab the mast and scream at the top of her lungs. Why did she sign up for this again? When the ship leveled out, Rinoa was still gripping tight to the mast and Angelo had to nudge with her nose to get her attention and let her know they were mostly fine again. She finally let go and dropped to her knees to catch her breath. Then there was an explosion as the ship was hit with fire spells. Oh, right. They were still in a battle. With PSYCHO pirates. Loonies, the lot of them. Getting back to her feet Yuffie called out about handling things up here as she headed off.
"Wha-? But...!" Rinoa called out, but Yuffie was gone. Well, great. There went her magic source. At least she had stocked some, but that only gave her nine shots of Biora. She wasn't big on this whole alone thing. She looked around and there were still plenty of pirates lurking about, recovering from the wave and ready to fight.
This was usually the part where she got kidnapped.
Maybe she should try summoning Doomtrain? That would take time to channel though and there wasn't much of a line of defense at the moment to hold them off in the meantime. It'd be nice if those who had cast the fire spells were nearby, but they seemed to be shooting their magic from the other ship, which didn't help Rinoa at all. Oh, well, she'd have to make due. Rinoa junctioned Biora to her elemental attack, giving her weapon a bit of a poison touch to her pinwheel. People we weak to poison in her experience. And she junctioned her Hastes to her attack. Not a big help there, but it was better then nothing. She whistled and Angelo rushed forward on the offensive, striking at the pirates with tooth and claw. Rinoa aimed at one and fired her flying weapon at him.
Realizing the danger they were in from the mages, Faris went on the offensive against them. Startling the duo with his appearance, the Captain had maybe a few moments to act before the startled mages regained their bearings and backed away from him, getting some distance. The first mage struck first, launching Blizzara from behind Faris. The second though, waited until Faris was busy with Blizzara before striking, charging and launching Fira at the Captain's back. But there was another plan here -- if Faris dodged the Fira, they would quickly realize that the attack was heading straight for the crystal-carrying sailors on the other ship.
Yuffie had decided to try and save the ship by putting out the fires. Indeed, the use of Aqualung over time was finally able to dissipate the flames, keeping the ship afloat for now. But this had also left Rinoa to fend off the pirates on the ship by herself. Rinoa's attack combination alongside Angelo was effective and were able to take down her fair share of pirates, but some were able to slip through, attacking the sailors activating the crystal. Forced to drop the crystal, the sailors draw their swords and are at least able to hold off the pirates for a bit longer. But as the crystal drops to the deck, its shine fades...
The storm kicks up once more, and a large wave washes over both ships. But through the storm, one with an eagle eye might notice something descending upon them...
A gigantic Man 'O War passes through the storm, unbattered, unphased, as though it were nothing. The sails are torn and ragged, and by all means shouldn't be functioning. A massive crew of cloaked figures appear to be manning it, though what's left of the sails don't seem to indicate their allegiance like that of the pirates. The ripped sails are blank, a dark grey color that almost blends in with the storm.
Luckily, they made their allegiances clear very quickly.
As they open fire on both ships.
The titan ship may be slow moving, but its cannons were the real deal. Both Torensten and pirate ships would find themselves battered by this terrifying new enemy. Sailor and pirate alike begin to scramble for cover as the cannonfire devastated their ships. The ship belonging to Torensten quickly finds its hull punctured, and it begins taking on water.
"We need to evacuate to the other ship!" called out one of the sailors. "Where is the crystal?"
Indeed. The crystal had gone flying amongst the chaos. But if one were to look well enough, they'd find something glimmering underwater below deck, just under a hole that had been blown into the deck itself. But they were running out of time. While the pirates had stopped attacking for the time being, they wouldn't stop for long. They would likely gain their bearings very soon and attempt to get the better of both parties.
For the party of Torensten, therein laid the task of getting their crew and the crystal evacuated onto a ship that wasn't sinking. But could they pull it off in time?
