[attr=class, bulk] Yuna nodded at Caius’ advice that she just listen during hard conversations where she didn’t necessarily know what to say. “That makes sense. I saw that during my pilgrimage.” So many people’s lives had been devastated by Sin, and most of them had just needed somewhere to turn with their grief. It had been an honor to be someone that they looked to for hope. Even if the concept of a summoner’s pilgrimage had turned out to be based on a lie, Yuna thought that she would always remember that part.
Caius didn’t seem to have found anything else of note during their time researching in the study, so Yuna nodded and retrieved her staff from where it had been resting against the wall. “We can take the front door. Warping makes me a little dizzy,” she admitted with a small laugh. “I’m sure you get used to it though. I have no idea how you know where you’re going.”
Creeping back through the hallway, Yuna cast a regretful look at the abandoned dining room and the dried blood smeared along the floor and baseboards in a dripping pattern. Criminals or not, they had deserved to be arrested, not killed. If only she and Caius had gotten there sooner, but then there was no way that they could have heard about it until the monsters had escaped. It was just a tragedy.
“Here,” Yuna announced, managing to locate the front door past where they had originally stopped to descend into the basement. An umbrella and boots were propped off to the side, which gave Yuna another tinge of regret. This house seemed so normal. What would prompt someone to go into a business like breeding monsters? Just the money? She supposed that they might never know.
Yuna drew the latch back and stepped onto the front porch where they had originally tried to knock. The sky was as overcast as it had been before, and the wind had picked up. Yuna drew her arms around herself a little as her hair whipped around her face with the force of it. “Looks like a storm’s coming,” she murmured, before turning towards the side of the house that they had first entered through. “Some of the monsters must have broken out of the basement. That would explain the scratches on the inside of the basement door and why the window was broken from the inside out...Maybe we could try to pick up their trail from there? They must have left marks in the sand.”
Yuna didn’t have much experience with tracking, but she suspected that Caius probably did. A desolate world like the one where he’d come from must have been scarce on food, but that seemed like a sad topic to broach unless he did first. Those couldn’t have been the easiest memories for him after all.
Yuna was careful to stay a little back from the window lest she mess up any tracks in the sand, though she did her best to scan what was going on in front of it. The broken glass and the scattering of blood was less obvious now that the sun had vanished behind the clouds, but it was definitely there, and she could easily locate the marks from her own boots next to Caius’ slightly larger prints. Her frown grew though when she spotted a larger indentation off to the side.
“What do you think this is?” She asked as she crouched down next to it. Sand didn’t leave as clear of imprints as mud would have, but the hole was large and round with five tiny markings above it that had the appearance of claws. Yuna didn’t have much longer to examine it though when a feral, animalistic snarl echoed from down the beach. Jumping where she was crouched, Yuna glanced up at Caius worriedly.
“Vordun?” She was suddenly hyper-aware that they had left the dragon alone on the beach with monsters on the loose. The only thing that gave her any sort of relief was that Vordun didn’t sound like the one who was in trouble.

The Dragonglaive
Caius didn't know all the details about Yuna's pilgrimage, but the more details he gathered together, the more harrowing that it sounded. Having to fight a god was one thing, but also having to bear the responsibilities of others in the process, having to be there in their toughest moments, even when you had no idea what to do. It was all a lot to bear, he could imagine. Yuna admitted she didn't want to warp, as it made her dizzy. It made him smirk in response. "You sound like Celes" he commented with a small laugh. "I was dizzy as first but I got used to it. Using it over and over again in succession can still be pretty disorienting though. Same for warping long distances. Your depth perception and awareness can get pretty screwy when you don't recognize your surroundings."
There was nothing left that they could do here. Caius regretted that fact, but it was part of the job. Sometimes the bad things had already happened before they had even been hired to do the job. That was the likely case here. A shame that the first job Yuna had taken the initiative on taking herself ended this way, but it would be a lesson on what to expect in the future. It was an unfortunate thing, and yet... It was a fact of life. A regular thing in their line of work. But he did have to wonder, why would people breed such aggressive monsters here? The home looked as though it had once been normal, and yet... Here it was.
A storm began to brew over the gloomy home, if one could call it a home anymore. As they stepped out, Caius grunted in annoyance as a small spitting of raindrops began to fall and droop over his head. Great. Yuna suggested tracking the monsters, which he agreed with. They would have to do it soon if they were to get the tracks before the rain did.
"Vordun will be more efficient than us" Caius brought up as he whistled loudly for Vordun. He could track if needed, but Vordun would be more reliable. Yuna would spot an indention on the beach, and Caius began to look to it, though also starting to wonder what was taking Vordun so long...
As if on cue, the snarl that echoed told Caius quickly enough. "Sorry" he told Yuna as he placed a hand on her shoulder. It was instant, as the two would be transported with the Point Warp. Caius' arms dropped when they re-materialized, and Yuna wouldn't recognize her surroundings at first. But if she looked around, she could see the house in the distance. They had traveled a fair ways down the beach. Caius shook the cobwebs out of his head as he followed the noise. Vordun had taken absolute priority for Caius over everything else, and his safety was all that Caius was thinking about. When they arrived, Vordun had just pinned down one of the crabs with his claws and torn one of their pincers out with his teeth. But more of them were swarming the drake, and Caius didn't hesitate to draw his blade and jump into the fray.

[attr=class, bulk] Caius seemed to be a step ahead of her in realizing that Vordun was in danger, but that wasn’t too surprising considering that the dragon was like a son to him. Yuna recognized the quick hard set of Caius’ face from back when Darlene had hurt the drake, though at least this time they were both fully armed and could do something about it. Yuna was about to point out the direction that she thought the commotion was coming from, but Caius beat her to it by apologizing.
“What for-?” She started to ask when her friend grasped her shoulder and a sudden sense of weightlessness washed over her as her vision blurred with blue streaks. Stumbling out of the warp, Yuna was disoriented to find herself suddenly surrounded by a different section of beach, but she did her best to keep on her feet by using her staff as a balancing stick.
“In any other circumstances I’d need more than an apology,” Yuna complained with a small smile, though it quickly fell off her face as she spotted the blue dragon holding his own against one of the monstrous crab creatures that they’d faced inside the house. Vordun was clearly winning the fight, but more of them were emerging from the stormy waves every second, and Yuna suddenly had a better picture of why there had been so many empty cages down in the basement. It looked like more of them had escaped than she had thought.
Caius leapt into the fray sword-first to protect Vordun, but Yuna hung back for a second to catch her breath as she was still a little dizzy from the warp over. The rain had started to pick up in droves, and her bangs were quickly plastered against her forehead as the wind whipped the sea into short choppy waves. No wonder so many crabs had started to come ashore at once, but as the water glistened on the backs of their hard shells, Yuna got an idea.
“Nul-Frost,” she murmured twice in quick succession, casting protection from ice magic first on Caius and then on Vordun since they’d be directly in the line of fire. She had a feeling that Caius would guess what she was doing from that, but she still gave the action a wide berth before starting. Swinging her staff over her head, Yuna spun in short circles, giving all her concentration to the only aeon who had ever answered her call while she was here on Zephon.
The air around Yuna suddenly felt as if the temperature had plummeted, and she felt her wet hair frost over against her cheeks as an armored figure descended into view. It was still unnerving to see a version of Shiva that was so different from the one on Spira--this one was a genderless figure completely covered in frozen armor that glimmered different shades of blue and purple in the light. Either way, Shiva was still breath-taking to see, and Yuna clasped her hands in front of her and gave the figure a short bow. She’d intended to explain the situation when she straightened up, but whether through intuition or their connection, Shiva already seemed aware of where the problem was as they strode towards the battle, Diamond Dust rising to their fingertips.

That, obviously. He had apologized in advance for having to warp her, and Point-Warp at that. Well, at least he warned her about how warping long distances would be ahead of time, right? Poor Celes hadn't been afforded that luxury over a year ago. But necessity had dictated as it had. Caius' first instinct was to do as he felt he had to do, in most cases. Which could be a strength and a weakness. It was up to Yuna to decide which that was in this case.
With the swarms getting bigger, Caius did not play around or stop to enjoy the fight. Blows were precise, mainly aiming to disable their claws with a slash through the right areas, or sending them back into the sea. Once he had made his way back to Vordun, he could feel the effects of Nul-Frost as a chill surrounded the both of them. That was their cue to go, it seemed. Caius climbed aboard Vordun and stabbed his blade through one of the crabs climbing after him, before kicking them off Vordun's back. Caius swapped to his gundaggers as Vordun took off, and began sweeping those that had climbed onto Vordun's legs and tail off him, sending them falling below as Yuna brought out the Astral once more.
Shiva. It looked different from the depictions in Lucian lore, but it was them no doubt. As Diamond Dust froze their enemies solid, Caius decided to take advantage when the attack was over. Making a few motions to Vordun, the drake would unleash a fiery breath down upon the crabs when Shiva was finished.

[attr=class, bulk] Yuna made sure to keep her distance from the battle so Shiva could do her work, and that turned out to be lucky when Caius came sweeping in low on Vordun’s back. The crabs had already been frozen solid, so Yuna made a quick guess on what he was planning. She quickly brought her staff down to touch the sand, closing her eyes as she banished Shiva by dropping their connection. Dragon’s fire was bound to hurt even more than the actual spell, and Shiva would be weak to the heat. Yuna didn’t want to risk getting the aeon caught in it, even if Vordun wouldn’t be aiming for her.
Vordun made quick work of the fiends who remained, and Yuna had to admire how big his flames had gotten. She was nowhere even close, and she could still feel the searing heat across her face and arms until the fire died down to a crackling simmer.
“That was amazing!” Yuna called up the pair as she crept back closer to the scene. She could still remember when Caius had difficulty even mounting Vordun, so it was really gratifying to see how much work he had put in with the dragon and how well they could fight together now.
The crabs were strewn everywhere across the sand, and Yuna’s heart twinged a little when she saw that one was still twitching. They may have been fiends, but she still didn’t like for anything to suffer. Kneeling down at the creature’s side, she pulled out the jeweled dagger that Celes had given her and made sure to drive it into the monster’s softer underbelly. If she had trouble looking while doing it, then nobody else but Caius had to know.
Afterward, Yuna looked down at the bloody dagger and bit her lip slightly before wiping it off on the sand. “I suppose it’s my luck that on the first mission I drag you along to, we’re too late to save anyone…” She gave a slightly sad smile up to her blond friend before rising to her feet. “I guess that just means I’ll have to be faster next time.”
Yuna cast one last look at the cloudy ocean before sheathing her dagger where it was concealed among the folds and jewelry at her sash. “...Ready to go home?” She finally asked Caius. They’d certainly had a long day, and she still had a difficult conversation with their current employer to look forward to.

The Dragonglaive
It was done, it was over. The evil crab monsters were defeated, and they had managed to get out relatively unscathed. That was good news. Yuna praised his work with Vordun, and Caius smiled slightly. He was definitely proud of how far he had come with Vordun, even if he didn't know how to vocalize it exactly. They had put in weeks, months, maybe even a year of effort at this point. Caius wasn't good at time. But he knew it was showing fruit, and he and Vordun were almost always in sync. It was the sum of all their efforts.
Yuna noticed one of the creatures twitching, as did Vordun who had begun growling at it. Caius had drawn his weapon to give it a quick death, but Yuna decided to do it herself. She clearly wasn't happy about it. He wouldn't be either, in her shoes. She started talking. She showed her feelings, even if she didn't vocalize them completely. He understood. This was the not so fun part of the job. But it was a necessary one. Even as she seemed ready to go home, she clearly wasn't too eager for it. He couldn't blame her. He felt bad that she had to go through this, even if it was necessary.
Silence. A long silence. He raised a hand, contemplating a moment if this was the right move. This was an educated guess at best. Caius was not good at these things. He knew that. He didn't know the first thing about how to comfort Yuna, even if he understood how she felt. But eventually, he brought his arm down on her shoulder as she concealed the dagger once more.
"It's acceptable to feel as you do in these circumstances. Not every mission has a happy ending. I'm the last person who can judge for this, but... Do your best not to blame yourself. You did what you could, and you are always working to improve to be better for the next time. And next time may turn out the same. You cannot control that. You can only continue to better your odds. So long as you continue to fight at your best and strive for greater, then your actions respect those you wish to save, and honor the memories of those you could not."
It never got easier. He knew that, and he knew that it never would. But they had to keep fighting if they were to save others.

[attr=class, bulk] Yuna was a little surprised when Caius laid a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. He usually wasn’t the most physically affectionate person, but she found that she was grateful for it this time. When confronted with no survivors and a beach full of the bodies of monsters, this entire mission’s ending had put her in low spirits. It helped to have a friend around.
Caius had some wise words of advice, and Yuna nodded slowly as she tried to take them to heart. She wasn’t used to failure, but then, she wasn’t used to taking on smaller jobs like these. Her life as a summoner had revolved entirely around one job. Defeat Sin. There had been no room for error there. Yuna was still adjusting to the life of a mercenary, so it helped to hear from someone with more experience like Caius.
“...Thank you. Really.” She gave him a faint smile over her shoulder before looking towards the blue house in the distance. They’d turned out the lamp that had been left burning in the window, and it made the house look far more abandoned than it had when they had first approached. She wondered if anyone would ever live there again, or if its history would lead to it being torn down. With a basement like that, she wasn’t sure that she could picture any other fate for it.
Yuna gave a quick bow in its direction--there was no one left to perform a sending for, but it still felt appropriate--before she straightened up and turned to face Caius. “I’ll do my best. Thanks for coming with me.” She judged the cloudy sky, grateful that it had stopped raining for the moment.
“I guess we should go report what happened before we get any wetter.” Yuna reached out to pat Vordun to show that she hadn’t forgotten him either. “And thank you for coming too of course. You always manage to save us both, Vordun.” Was she covering up how bad she felt about the mission? A little, but she was doing her best to take what Caius had said to heart. Yuna would continue to fight at her best and strive to do better. For now, it was time to head back to Torensten and report what they’d seen.
