“There,” Yuna smiled at her patient, straightening up from the teenagers’s bedside as she brushed a few stray pieces of stone off her long skirt. The boy’s parents rushed forward to check on him, and Yuna took a couple respectful steps backward to give the family some space. “There shouldn’t be any lasting damage from the petrification. Just try not to stray too far off the path when you’re traveling anymore. Coeurls can do a lot worse than that…”
The boy was actually incredibly lucky that was all the cat-like monster had done to him, but she didn’t think that either the boy or his parents needed to hear that. They’d had enough of a scare today.
As Yuna started packing up to leave, the boy’s mother approached her looking shaken. “Thank you so much. Supplies have been so scarce at the market that prices have shot up. We weren’t sure what to do when we couldn’t even afford a soft…”
“It was no trouble at all,” Yuna assured her, though a slight frown crossed her face that the inflation in the area was so high. She was currently in a secluded western suburb of Torensten, and she didn’t think that anything like that was happening in the main marketplaces yet. Still, maybe she’d better stock up on curatives while she had the chance if this was going to be a trend.
Yuna tried to politely decline payment--a simple Esuna spell wasn’t worth much in her opinion--but the parents hastily pressed a few coins in her hand as she was leaving, so she was left staring down at the gil in her palm as the door closed behind her.
With a small sigh, Yuna transferred the money to her bag, deciding that it would help pay for her room tonight at any rate. She had just returned to Torensten a few days ago, and as she set off down the street, she realized that she had missed the smell of smoke and fresh fish in the air. This side of the city was closer to the coast than she had been while on Zephon yet so far, so there was also a tang of salt that she wasn’t used to but that reminded her of Spira. The thought brightened her up considerably, and she was so lost in thought, she nearly didn’t notice that a man was trying to get her attention.
“Excuse me, are you the healer that was here? The one with the Dragonblades?”
Yuna turned around to meet the eyes of a shorter man who was dressed a bit too nice to live in this neighborhood. He looked more like he belonged in the area where the politicians lived, but Yuna gave him a polite smile anyway. “Yes. I’m Yuna. Can I help you with anything?”
The man offered her a sealed letter that Yuna instinctively took before even hearing his explanation. “I was heading to your base now, but would you be able to deliver that for me instead? It’s about the supply routes drying up out west. There’s some materials we collect along the Pale Coast, but several of our merchants haven’t returned lately. We were hoping to hire the Dragonblades to look into what might have happened.”
Yuna frowned, recalling what the petrified boy’s mother had said before she inclined her head to the man. “Of course. I’ll head there first thing to deliver the message.”
“Thank you.” The man hesitated slightly, and Yuna regarded him patiently until he eventually handed her a small slip of paper on top of the letter.
“As a personal request. While you were there...would you mind checking this address? It’s a house near the beach.” The man looked nervous now, and a tad apologetic as he explained. “My wife was supposed to return this morning. I’m sure she’s just delayed, but…”
Yuna’s eyes softened, and she gave the man a more genuine smile. “We’ll check while we’re there.” She could tell without asking that he was worried his wife might have gotten caught up in whatever was keeping the merchants, which was a reasonable fear if there was a monster responsible, but she’d never dream of saying that to him. Hope was an important thing to hold onto.
As they said their good-byes, Yuna turned to leave, glancing down at the two items that she’d been given. It looked like she needed to make a visit to their base to deliver them as promised. Not that Yuna minded taking on this one herself, but she could use a companion when she wasn’t sure exactly what she’d encounter. Part of her hoped that either Caius or Celes was in town. She rather missed them.
***
After a few hours, Yuna was ready to leave, shielding her eyes from the sun as she waited near a chocobo stable on the outskirts of Torensten. If Caius brought Vordun along, then chocobos wouldn’t really be needed of course, but Yuna wasn’t yet sure who was joining her. She’d left both items that the man had given her at the base, along with a meeting place and a request for one other person. All that was left was to wait and see who her partner would be.
Of course, if she wished, if Yuna was in need of a room she could stop by the base and check. They didn't have a crazy lot of rooms, but if they had any available, then she was more than welcome to one of them. Caius had brought that up with her at some point some time ago, though had also mentioned they didn't have the most in the world. It just came with the territory with their building. The building was nice enough. Small, but had two storeys and a courtyard for training. The upstairs area was isolated off into a series of small rooms, with free beds if any members were there at the time to take them. Of course, with the amount of members increasing, this was growing less likely. So it was definitely good to have some inn money handy. Caius and Celes had looked into possible better buildings to go with their growth, but they hadn't reached a point where it was necessary just yet.
Her message had been received though, and the blonde haired... Male (It might take a moment to tell from a distance whether it was Caius or Celes) soon arrived. As it was a mission outside of the cities, Caius had decided to bring Vordun along. They would need to go get him on the way, but hopefully she wouldn't mind.
Caius greeted Yuna with a gentle smile as he approached. It hadn't been all that long it felt like since their previous meeting. But he was glad he'd gotten a chance to catch up to her before he made his way to Sonora. On his way back to Torensten, he had met someone who had... Given him a lot to think of. But it still didn't change his mind on his decision.
"It's good to see you, Yuna" Caius spoke up once he had reached her position. "Do you mind if we take a detour before we head there? I want to bring Vordun along, so I'd like to go and get him before we head out."
Caius didn't bring Vordun to the cities much anymore, on Celes' request. It was too risky. The base was close to the entrance, so he could sneak Vordun in undercover to the base sometimes, but he tried not to take that risk too often.

Yuna had to shield her eyes against the sun that was facing her as a figure appeared on the horizon. It was hard to make out many details in the bright light, but she visibly perked up and rose to a standing position when it became impossible to miss that head of long, blond hair. It looked like one of the Dragonblade leaders would be joining her after all, which Yuna was secretly pleased about. While she wouldn’t have minded another member, she was definitely closest to Caius and Celes.
“Caius!” Yuna waved at her friend to get his attention once he was close enough to the stables, and she greeted him with a quick hug after leaning up on her tiptoes when he approached. She hoped it wasn’t too awkward, and her own action made her blush a little, but really, bowing felt far too formal with Caius at this point. They’d been on enough missions together.
“I’m glad you got my message. I guess this will be our first job together in a while.” She tactfully didn’t mention how badly the last one with the Original Sin had ended up--they had talked through their feelings about Darlene at that restaurant in Provo after all. There was no need to constantly revisit it. That would only make Caius feel bad.
“I don’t mind at all,” she said with a smile when he expressed that picking up Vordun would require a detour. “He’ll make the journey shorter in the long run, and I kind of miss seeing him. I bet he’s huge by now. She hoped what Darlene had done to him hadn’t left a scar--it had been a bad wound that had taken several cure spells as she recalled.
After making sure that she had both her staff and her dagger from Celes, Yuna set off down the path, following Caius’ lead as they went to go pick up the dragon. As they walked, she decided to broach the facts of the current job with him.
“What did you think of the letter?” She asked thoughtfully. “Merchants not returning from the coast...It could be monster activity. I just hope it’s not bandits again.” She wouldn’t put it past the Original Sin to be robbing the supply lines and bleeding Torensten dry, but it also felt too...obvious for them somehow. They were usually better at avoiding detection from the Torensten nobles than this. It didn’t quite feel like their group to Yuna, but she still wanted to see what Caius thought. He had the most experience with them, after all.
Caius blinked a few times, a bit stunned when Yuna suddenly grabbed him and pulled him into an embrace. Caius wasn't exactly used to hugs. Not a whole lot of them thrown around in his line of work. Not that he minded from Yuna, it just... Caught him off guard. If she felt comfortable enough to forgo the formalities, though, that was good he supposed. He let out an exhale before he slowly, albeit a bit hesitantly as he wasn't used to doing this and afraid he might hurt her in his grip, brought his arm to wrap around her shoulder to awkwardly return the embrace. His cheeks went a little rosy upon seeing the same on her own face. Had he embarrassed her by being so awkward? Well, that was great.
The last job hadn't gone badly at all in Caius' eyes. From a practical standpoint, it had gone exceedingly well. They had stopped a serious slave racketing business, and had stopped the activities of one of the most prominent and cruel slave traders in Serentestra. Caius may have mixed feelings about how Darlene had been stopped, but they had saved a great many lives and prevented a great deal of suffering on that day. By all accounts, they had accomplished every goal they could have hoped for on this mission, and more. Learning more about the Original Sin leaders just made it all the better. "I've been looking forward to working with you again" he remarked with a small smile. Happy to hear she was open to taking a detour, and saw the practical benefits of doing so, he nodded his head as he led them down the path.
"Could be either, or" Caius admitted, thinking on the letter a moment. "We'd best be ready for anything. If it's something that hasn't been identified, then there's a good chance that it's seriously dangerous" he brought up. That meant it had left no survivors
Eventually, they came to a fenced in area full of lush grass. It was an open stretch of land, with a watering hole towards the middle. To the side there were logs lined up to be made into firewood, just under the roofing so they didn't rot in the rain. On the subject of roofing, the main attraction of this little hovel was the small, but cozy two-story house. It was complimented by a small stable building attached to the main building. The brickwork was a little lopsided in places, indicating this had been a home-made job and not by a professional carpenter. But it was still stable enough to stand just fine. Caius opened the door, motioning for Yuna to come in. She would be greeted by a sitting area, where the occupant looked to have been reading last they were here judging by the books on the table. Attached to it was a small kitchen area.
"Make yourself at home. I'll get the riding equipment ready and wake Vordun up" Caius spoke up as he walked back outside and headed to the stables. He returned soon after to fetch her.

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
From Caius’ delayed reaction before he returned her quick embrace, Yuna could guess that she had embarrassed him. His cheeks were a little rosier than she was used to seeing them, and she might have apologized for the hug completely if he didn’t say quickly that he’d been looking forward to working with her again.
“Me too.” Yuna smiled at him while giving Caius his space as they set off on a walk. Given what she knew of his background on a dying world, it wasn’t too surprising that he wasn’t used to physical affection with his friends. Yuna herself didn’t like it much unless she felt completely comfortable with someone, so it was probably best to tone it down until he was more ready.
Of course, given what was happening with Caius and Celes, Yuna felt that she might be waiting forever, but that was alright too. Hugs weren’t for everyone.
Yuna had wanted to hear Caius’ perspective on the letter that she’d left at the base, and she nodded thoughtfully when he said it was probably dangerous. “You’re right. I didn’t think about it much, but there should be tourists along the coast, right? It’s odd no one’s seen anything…” And troubling, but it was hard to speculate about what might be going on from here. They wouldn’t learn anything else until they had the chance to get out there and investigate, but Yuna couldn’t help wondering anyway as Caius led the way to a cozy property on the outskirts of town.
“Is this your house?” Yuna hadn’t seen it before, but it would make sense that he’d need a lot of space for Vordun. “I can tell you’ve worked really hard on it. It’s a lot nicer than the place I have in Provo.” It was probably to her detriment that charging people for healing them gave her a guilty conscience, so Yuna was always living from job to job. Still, she didn’t mind much as long as she was good on food and supplies. She wasn’t at home a lot anyway, so it didn’t matter much that her apartment building was a bit...seedy.
Caius gave her leave to look around as he went outside to get Vordun ready, so Yuna took the time to take in the room, including the small collection of books on the table. She supposed that the house was fairly small and patch-work by Torensten standards, but it really did feel like someone had put a lot of work into making it comfortable. It just felt like Caius, so she liked it immediately.
“Ready to go?” Yuna stopped creeping on what books he’d been reading as Caius came back in, and she gave him a small smile as she retrieved her staff and slipped back outside towards the stable with him. A very sleepy and slightly grumpy-looking dragon was waiting for them around the corner, and Yuna stopped walking with a tiny squeak as she caught sight of him.
“When did you get taller than me, Vordun?” Laughing, she held out a hand to allow the blue dragon to sniff her since it had been a while since she’d seen him. “Careful. He’ll be stealing cows from farmers soon,” she teased Caius before stepping back to allow her friend to make any final preparations needed.
Once they were ready to go, she stepped up carefully to Vordun’s side to climb up behind Caius like she had one time before. “You might have to remind me how to buckle into the saddle,” she admitted before doing her best on her own with what she remembered. Once she was strapped in, she settled back to consider the curtain of blond hair in front of her while Caius got himself settled.
“I was thinking maybe we could check the address he gave me first,” Yuna said a little quietly as she looped her staff through one of the straps to ensure it wouldn’t fall during the flight. “I think it’s an area that’s mostly vacation homes for the wealthy. I didn’t want to say anything to him, but...if his wife actually has gone missing like the merchants have, then that could be a good place to start.”
Less embarrassed and more just not used to it, even if he didn't really mind. Yuna he could trust, so it was no big deal. Just unexpected. "Exactly" he spoke up when she brought up there should have been tourists. "My theory is that they were also killed, possibly eaten depending on what we're dealing with. Could also be the Original Sin trying to bolster their slave trade after we crippled it. A desperate approach, essentially. But there's too many variables. We won't know for sure until a proper investigation... But we should still be prepared for anything that might come at us."
Yuna complimented his place, and he smiled gently. "You flatter, me. But thank you" he spoke softly. "It's not anything professionally done, so it's not the best. I just had a few days to myself after buying the land, and Vordun needed a place to settle when we're not traveling. So I bought some supplies, cut down some trees for wood and got to work. It serves the purpose well enough" he elaborated, looking to the large pile of wood nearby. Likely spare from the home-building efforts. Made for good firewood, at least. As well as lumber for potential new projects if he ever felt like -- and had the time to -- expand his horizons, so to speak.
Caius disliked charging for his services as much as she did. But every job he did made sure he and the others would be fed, clothed and equipped when a Kuja or a Lich comes around.
Caius brought out Vordun, though smirked slightly when she mentioned he might start stealing cows. "I don't think he needs to, nor has any reason to want to. This is very specifically out of the way and surrounded by forested land" Caius brought up. "Plenty of hunting grounds for a dragon. It's why I picked it. Out of the way, abundant with nature, quiet. A river not far from here for fishing, plenty of game to hunt. Plenty of good wood for building and repairing, as well."
Once they were aboard, Caius turned and helped show Yuna how to buckle in, mainly letting her do it but giving pointers where he could. Once she was strapped in, he did the same for himself. Yuna gave her suggestion of what to do next, and he nodded his head. "Sounds good. You can be our navigator" he brought up as Vordun started to flap his wings and began to take off into the sky. "Tell us where to go, you probably remember the directions better than I do."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna nodded her assent when Caius said that it would be best if she were the one to navigate the way to the beach. “Sure, I’ll give you directions as we go. I have no idea how to steer Vordun, so I’ll leave that part to you.” Caius was able to strap himself into the saddle a lot faster than Yuna had, but that wasn’t too surprising given how often he probably did this. Yuna herself had only ridden Vordun once before this, so she wasn’t able to suppress a slight squeak as the dragon pushed off from the ground. Grabbing onto Caius’ waist to steady herself, Yuna watched the ground rush away from them as Vordun propelled them forward with his powerful wings. Her friend’s house was the only dot of brown in a splash of green below them--Caius hadn’t been kidding when he said that Vordun had plenty of space to hunt.
“I still can’t believe you built that house yourself,” Yuna said appreciatively, responding to a comment he’d made while she’d been looking the whole thing over. “Did you learn how to do that back home? I wouldn’t know where to start with anything bigger than a tent.” Not that there was anything wrong with living in a tent. It got so hot on Besaid that most buildings besides the temple weren’t any bigger than that anyway, but they weren’t very sturdy structures. Caius’ house would last him a good while.
Remembering that she was supposed to be navigating, Yuna got them steered in the right direction before striking up a conversation with her friend. “You’ll have to tell me what you’ve been up to! I guess I haven’t seen you since that restaurant in Provo…” Yuna supposed that she did have at least one piece of news for Caius herself, so she raised the topic after a moment or two. “I met someone I knew from Spira. His name’s Seymour, if you ever run into him. It’s funny though. He was one of the five most important priests in the world back home, but he’s...different here. Younger. He didn’t remember me.” Even after hearing Caius talk about Ardyn and Somnus, she really hadn’t thought that weird time shenanigans could apply to people from Spira as well, but it seemed like no one was safe from that.
Yuna left her comments about Seymour to that. She and Caius were good enough friends that she didn’t mind digging into the things the maester had done or that Yuna had once been engaged to him, but she thought that conversation was best reserved for when she and Caius both had a cup of wine in front of them.
Actually...she should probably bring up that she had gone on two dates with Faris, but maybe that should wait as well. Judging from how Faris had spoken of Caius, she suspected that their dislike was mutual. Yuna only hoped that she’d be able to force them to get along the next time that they all ran into each other.
Eventually, Yuna glanced at the slip of paper in her hand before directing Caius to land Vordun in a patch of sand right on the coast. The water was beautiful from so high up, even with the towering waves and slightly overcast weather. By the time that Yuna had unbuckled herself and slid off Vordun, she was staring a little longingly at the endless expanse of ocean before them.
“This is actually my first time coming out this far. I didn’t know it would look so much like home.” If only they didn’t have a job to do. Yuna had the urge to take off her boots and walk barefoot across the clean white sand, but there were more important things to do right now than sightsee. Sighing, Yuna led them up the beach towards the closest house that stood overlooking it. She trusted that Caius knew best whether to leave Vordun or bring him along. The dragon was big enough that he definitely made people nervous at this point, but on the other hand, he was incredibly friendly and good to have around when they didn’t even know what they were dealing with yet.
It turned out that they had overshot the house a bit, and Yuna sheepishly apologized as they finally ended up at the right one after walking down the coast a bit. After comparing the slip of paper in her hand to the numbers on the door, Yuna nodded as she took in the bright blue beach house. “It’s pretty big for a vacation house…” Some people in Torensten were incredibly wealthy, and Yuna wasn’t really surprised that their client was one of them. The house was the color of Vordun’s scales, and Yuna found it a little odd that she could see the lamps burning inside even through the drawn curtains. It was the middle of the day, so she couldn’t see what they needed so much light for, but she supposed that it wasn’t really her business as she glanced up at Caius before reaching out to knock on the red front door.
There was no answer.
Yuna knocked again a little uncertainly before raising her voice to call out a greeting. “Ah...excuse me? Lady Xaria? Your husband sent us to check on you…”
Nothing. Yuna glanced a bit dubiously at the lights on inside before stepping back to see if they were missing anything. The left side of the house was nothing but the beginnings of a garden struggling to grow in the thin, rocky soil. To the right, she thought there was nothing but sand at first glance, but the sun had come out since they’d first landed on the beach, and the light was glinting off of something laying on top of it.
Yuna looked at Caius to see if he’d noticed anything before she trailed over to the side of the house to check on what she’d seen. Blinking in the sun, Yuna was a little startled to see that it had been shards of glass sparkling in the light, and after looking up at the window beside her, she quickly raised her staff and gripped it tightly in her hands. The window had been broken from the inside out, and there was no mistaking the tiny dark droplets on the windowsill for anything but blood.
Backing away, Yuna looked around for her friend, keeping her voice low when she found Caius again. “Do you think we should go inside?”

“We all needed to pitch in to build barricades, and shelters, and everything we could. Whether it was because I was hired to do so, or because it was just the right thing to do. In this case, my house was a product of taking some of that experience, a lot of trial and error… A lot of time spent in the woods gathering materials, and a lot of time. Probably the longest stretch of “downtime” I’ve ever had in my life, but it was worth it when it was finished” he elaborated gingerly when Yuna asked, as he focused his sights on Vordun rising above the ground. Yuna directed them soon after, as they flew through the skies. Not too low so as to attract attention, but not too high to where Yuna wouldn’t be able to recognize the paths below.
Was it really some big accomplishment, building a house? He had done it out of necessity, and used the skills he had picked up from his time as a freelancer and a hunter in a ruined world. He hadn’t realized it was such a big deal. Or perhaps Yuna was just humoring him, who knows?
Indeed, they hadn’t seen each other since the restaurant. Where Caius had… Said things. Things he would not repeat. Not to Yuna, not to Celes. Nobody. They were his burden to bear now. But what Yuna said was of interest to him… One she knew called Seymour, from her own world. An important man, a priest. But he was… Younger? Younger than she knew him as. Interesting… This was a first for this kind of thing.
“Hmm… Interesting. I’ve actually met a woman from my world who I had worked with briefly in the first few years I spent as a hunter” Caius revealed. “I haven’t seen her since, but... When I met her here, she looked the exact same as she had a decade before. While before I had considered it just good genetics… It seems that I was wrong. But I’ve never seen someone who is far younger than the version of them that I knew” he elaborated, adding his knowledge to her own. “I never even knew someone could be taken from such an early point in their lives. That sounds… Terrifying.”
Soon enough, they arrived. Caius could admit having a bit of a fondness for the coast. Beachside areas were calm and peaceful, he had found lately. Far out enough to go fishing with Vordun in a calm, quiet and warm environment without issues, most of the time. “You can come fish with us here next time you’re in the area” Caius offered gingerly, when Yuna said it reminded her of home. Leaving Vordun a short distance away just in case, but not far enough that he couldn’t see them, Caius was surprised himself by just how large the vacation house was. The lights were on, weird considering the time of day… But when Yuna tried to get them to answer the door, no answer came.
He followed her lead as she led them to the overgrown side of the house. It looked like it had been left alone for far too long… But Caius’ gaze darted to the broken window, and the weird dark blood that oozed from it. Yuna asked if they should go inside, which was fine, as Caius had already decided on going on. He held out a hand for her to take.
“Guess we’re breaking and entering.”
Caius waited for her to take his hand before he focused his sights. The two of them warped forwards, phasing through and bypassing any remnants of the broken window, and finding themselves inside without a scratch on them...

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Caius seemed to agree with her assessment that they needed to go inside as soon as he laid eyes on the shattered window and the tiny smears of blood on the windowsill. Yuna nodded determinedly when he said that they’d have to break in. She didn’t think that she’d ever forced her way inside a house before, so she glanced around for possibilities. They could always break out the rest of the glass from the window and climb inside, but there would be a high chance of them accidentally cutting themselves on the way in. Maybe they could try to force the front door instead? Caius was strong enough that he might be able to, but before Yuna could make the suggestion, he offered her a hand.
Yuna blinked slightly in confusion, but she trusted him completely at this point, so she grasped his calloused hand before she’d even really thought about, it just assuming he had a plan. The next moment, the world shifted into a blue tint as her surroundings blurred and changed completely into a cozy looking study. Releasing her friend’s hand, Yuna stumbled forward and quickly clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle her surprised gasp as she looked back at Caius and realized what must have happened. He had warped both of them inside using his kingsglaive powers. Well that certainly made things easier.
There were more important things at stake right now, but Yuna still couldn’t resist a whispered comment. “I didn’t know you could warp with someone else. I’ll have to thank King Noctis if I ever meet him.” She smiled faintly before going about the more dire task of taking in their surroundings. They looked to be in someone’s study or office, with a long varnished desk in one corner and some bookshelves in the other. The wooden floorboards creaked under her feet, and the fireplace was sending up thin wisps of smoke as if a roaring fire had been left to steadily burnt itself down to ashes. Besides the shattered window, nothing seemed terribly out of place except for a few scattered droplets of blood across the floor. There wasn’t even any broken glass in sight, which confirmed that the window must have shattered outwards. Someone or something inside had crashed through.
“I’m not sure I like how this looks,” Yuna murmured uneasily as she stepped past the bookshelves. A quick glance told her that all the books seemed to be about various beasts living in the region. The owners of the house seemed to have an interest in monsters. “If something happened, it looks like it’s been hours…” If not days, which meant that they were likely too late to help anyone who had been here. Still, that wouldn’t stop her from making sure, and she was confident that Caius felt the same way.
A stack of invoices had been left out on the desk as if someone had been going over their finances, and Yuna was a bit unnerved to see that the top one related to the purchase of a large supply of behemoth meat, but she forced herself to turn her attention to the door instead as she crept out into the hallway.
“Is anyone there?” She called out, turning in a slow circle while hoping for a response. “We’re sorry to have barged in! Is anyone hurt?” The only answer was the distant buzzing of flies, and Yuna gave Caius an anxious look before peering into the dining room, which seemed to be the source of the sound.
“Oh.” Yuna was forced to cover her nose at the terrible smell permeating the room. Spoiled food lay on plates that the flies were enjoying even if no one else was. All the chairs were pushed back from the long table, as if the guests had left in a hurry. A wine glass had even been tipped over without being picked up again--the red stain across the tablecloth doing nothing to make Yuna feel better about the situation.
“What do you think?” Yuna murmured to Caius, backing out of the room and into the hallway again so she could breathe. The entryway led further back into the rest of the house, but Yuna didn’t have much hope that it would be much different than what they’d found so far. More promising were the stairs that led upward--surely there would be more places to hide upstairs--and the cracked open door that revealed some dark winding stairs down into the basement. Yuna clutched her staff a little tighter and stepped a bit closer to Caius as she noticed the thick scratches near the bottom of the basement door. “Up or down?”
He smirked lightly at Yuna's comment, but his expression turned to be all business soon after. Caius honestly wasn't sure if that would have even worked, he just kind of took a guess with the window and hoped for the best. He did know he could teleport with others though, yeah. If he could do so with objects without damaging them, why would people be any different? He had practiced this with Celes repeatedly, albeit it was something she wasn't too fond of. But he really only did it when it was necessary.
The study was deserted. And by the creaky floor boards, may as well have been deserted for years at this point. This had been lived in recently, right? And by someone who was very well off at that, yes? None of this looked or felt right at all. Alarm bells were going off in his head the more red flags that presented themselves. Then he smelled it. A hunter had learned to smell this very quickly. Blood. Dried blood, by how faint the smell was, but not so dried that he couldn't smell it. He didn't know how recently it had been, but... It was clear that something was amiss here.
Yuna was right. If something had happened, it was likely far too late for them to stop it. There was nothing they could have done, they had really only heard about this just now. It had likely been hours if indeed something had happened, if not entire days.
Caius didn't hesitate to look over the invoices. Perhaps it was rude, but he was under no impression the occupant was still alive at this point. He didn't see much wrong with behemoth meat and didn't know why Yuna was grimacing at the sight of it. She'd eaten it before. Behemoth meat in cup noodles made for the best cup noodles. Perfection in a cup.
Yuna led the way with Caius following suit. He moved half his face into the crock of his jacket when the bad smell came around. He didn't call for anyone. They were dead, or the place was abandoned, most likely. Probably explained the flies. That or the spoiled food that came soon after. The chairs were pulled out roughly, the food was long spoiled, wine had been spilled... Interesting. He was getting a bigger impression something had happened here, but what?
Once they left, there were stairs leading above, and a scratched door leading below. Two options.
"We should search the entire house. Which one we take first probably doesn't make a difference" Caius brought up. "Those scratches indicate we should be careful, though. There may very well be monsters that got in. And are still here."
