Caius pointed out that it really didn’t matter which floor they searched first, because it was part of their job to search the entire house for survivors. He was right of course, but Yuna supposed that part of her had been hoping he would suggest that they go upstairs first. Something about the dark basement with the deep gouges out of the inside part of the door was...concerning.The upstairs looked far more inviting, but that was why Yuna reluctantly turned towards the open door instead. “If I were a monster I know where I’d hide…”
Creeping towards the top of the wooden stairs, Yuna peered down below, finding that she could see the bottom but not by much. The lamps had all been left burning up above, but it didn’t look like that extended to the basement. “I don’t suppose you have a light on you?” Yuna asked Caius with a faint smile. The blond mercenary always seemed to be prepared for anything, though she supposed it did help to be able to store things inside of his glaive. For herself, Yuna remembered that there had been an extremely low-burning candle left in the center of the dining room table, so she pressed a sleeve over her face to block the smell before she dipped inside to retrieve it. The poor thing had burned for so long that it was mostly just a pool of white wax at this point, but it should serve her purposes for a few minutes at least.
Yuna made sure that Caius was ready before she held the candle out in front of her and started to descend. The tiny flicker of flame cast shadows on the stone walls around them as she carefully set one foot in front of the other on the old stairs. When she reached the bottom, she at first thought it was a dead-end, but realized after a moment that there was a sharply-curved hallway off to the right. She couldn’t even see what waited at the end of it, but she did reluctantly follow its course anyway after making sure that Caius was close at hand.
The majority of the basement stretched out before them as one open room after they’d rounded the corner, and Yuna slowly lowered the candle as she tried to take in what she was seeing. Rows of empty cages ran the length of the room. Some were large and some were small, but they’d all clearly been in use recently. The room smelled awful--blood and excrement and the general smell of beasts that she’d gotten used to during battles with fiends. Peering at the cage closest to her, Yuna examined the empty water and food dish nervously.
“...Were they breeding monsters?” Maybe Yuna was naive, but that seemed far too dangerous for whatever amount of money was involved. Who was even paying for something like that? She wasn’t sure she wanted to consider the answer.
There was a skittering sound from the far side of the basement, and Yuna lost her grip on the melting candle, wincing as it sputtered out as it hit the floor. It sounded like a few of the monsters at least had stuck around. Taking a step back, she strained to hear against the darkness. There was a clicking of hard flesh against the ground, a scuttling of pincers, and Yuna groped nervously for the wall, immediately flicking on a light switch as her hand managed to snag one.
Overhead lights flooded the room, and Yuna had to shield her eyes from the sudden glare as the creatures in front of them recoiled back as if they didn’t like the abrupt light anymore than she did. Yuna let out a tiny startled squeak at the sight of crabs that were big enough to come up to her waist.
“What are they?" It probably didn’t matter either way as Yuna held up her staff between them, but there had been nothing like these creatures on Spira.

It was unfortunate, but they both knew where a monster would hide in this situation. And that's what they were here for, after all. Slaying monsters. As much as neither of them liked it, that was just part of the job. Yuna led the way as the two of them made their way downstairs. Something about it caused Caius to quietly materialize his gunblade into his hand when Yuna wasn't looking, silently preparing himself for any threats that might come. He wasn't one to go in unprepared when his instincts were running haywire like this. Yuna asked if he had a light. Caius nodded his head as he held out a hand. "Fire" he whispered as his free hand would conjure a ball of fire to light the way for the time being. It wasn't perfect, but it would do. Yuna also brought a candle, as much as it stunk, just in case. And it really, really did stink.
The two of them came to a large, open room once they were downstairs. He lowered his hand a little bit, but not too much. The smell only got worse as they came to a room that reeked of blood and other things that this narrator does not feel compelled to describe. There were a lot of cages, and he didn't want to imagine what had been held in them. But Yuna had done the imagining for them, asking if they were breeding monsters. Caius peered in behind her and noticed the water and food dishes in the cages. "Either keeping them for the black market, to attack intruders, or I suppose breeding... For whatever purpose that might serve" Caius responded, a little less disbelieving of the possibility. Something he had learned between Eos and Zephon -- there were a lot of messed up people around, for seemingly no rational reason whatsoever.
Yuna's candle dropped, and Caius thanked all above that the flame had gone out and wasn't threatening to burn down the house along with them. It appeared they weren't alone here. Finally, monsters. Something he could deal with. But their faces...
"Great."
The giant crab monsters, ones he mistook for daemons when he was growing up. It was clear that they weren't daemons but it didn't make it any less difficult to have to look at them. "Get behind me and cover me. They can't do you much harm if you're at a range."

Caius agreed with her assessment of the various sizes of cages scattered around the basement, and Yuna gave him a nervous expression when he mentioned that the owners could be selling the monsters on the black market. “Who would buy something like that?” She murmured, though it was really unnecessary. They’d both seen plenty of groups around Zephon whose members seemed like they’d do anything to make money or protect themselves, not to mention the Original Sin. There likely was a market for it, as little as Yuna wanted to follow that line of thought through to its conclusion.
Still, that was the least of their concerns right now as it seemed that not all of the monsters had escaped or run off, though it was pretty easy to see why as the shelled bodies of the crabs came into view. They were likely too big to fit through the door even if they’d wanted to, and Yuna blanched a bit as Caius directed her to stay behind him.
“What are they?” Maybe it wasn’t the right time to ask, but Caius seemed at least a little familiar with the creatures, and she nodded at the advice to keep her attacks ranged. “Then all those merchants going missing…” She couldn’t help saying, though it wasn’t a good time to discuss that either. Even if they had been attacked by creatures who had escaped from this house, she and Caius could plan their next move in the investigation once they were safe again.
“Protect,” she murmured, casting the spell on Caius to guard him against physical attacks. Those pincers looked dangerous, and with his double weapons, he was more likely than her to dive in close. Yuna kept her distance, running through her limited offensive capabilities in this environment. They were indoors, so summoning Shiva or casting Fire or Thunder could bring the house down on top of them. Water had nowhere to drain in a basement like this, so that spell could drown them before they had a chance to reach the door. (Neither of them were Blitzball players, after all, and she somehow doubted water would hurt crabs much anyway). That left Yuna with Blizzard and Holy, and Holy was such a drain on her magic that she preferred to save it for a pinch.
“Blizzard!” Covering her friend’s back, Yuna did her best to immobilize the monsters so that he could finish them.

The Dragonglaive
"You'll learn very quickly in this world, that there aren't any depths people won't stoop to" Caius brought up, surprisingly keeping his calm despite the horrible memories that were beginning to resurface at the sight of these crab things. "And as we both know by now, a tamed monster can be very dangerous. But especially so if you can tame it to only yourself, while keeping its feral state for everyone else. Not a great way for a creature to live, but..."
He didn't need to say more on the subject, his point had been more or less made. He moved to what the creatures were. "I recognize them, so believe me when I say keep your distance" he remarked, not wanting to think too much about what had happened to the missing merchants. Odds were that these monsters had been set on them, and their culprit had gotten away. It was very likely who they were sent to find, well... They were probably gone. Either taken by whoever had holed up here, or worse. And he didn't know if there were any leads that would link them to where they might have gone. Would there be records? Hmm...
"When we finish this, we need to search for customer records. I imagine they kept names for a rainy day without them knowing. Potential blackmail. I know the type, this seems like a move they'd make" Caius brought up and that was the end of it for now. He nodded his head when Yuna casted Protect. As soon as she casted Blizzard, Caius made his move. One was struck and frozen solid, while the other snapped at Caius. Caius didn't hesitate to jam his gunblade between the pincers and pushed them back, before tilting his gunblade and firing to hit it in the face. Their grip loosened and Caius slashed the claw right off before finishing the job in quick succession.
But he was forced to warp back towards Yuna when the other broke free and nearly took his own head off.
"They're quick. They can flank us easily if we're not careful. If they get you in a blind spot, you're dead."

Caius pointed out that they both knew how dangerous a tamed monster could be. While it felt a little unfair to call any of her aeons or Vordun a monster, Yuna took his point. Vordun only tolerated who Caius wanted him to after all, and her summons would turn their wrath wherever it was directed once they were called. “I suppose even Vordun or Shiva would be dangerous in the wrong hands,” Yuna murmured, her mind flashing automatically to Seymour before waving it aside. She could worry about her growing suspicions towards the man that she’d met from her own world later.
Her friend’s idea that they search for customer records was brilliant, and Yuna gave him a startled look as she recalled the window that they’d originally warped in through. “That office! There were supplier records on the desk. I didn’t know for what kind of business or I’d have looked closer,” she explained, but that was about all she had time for before the crabs had closed in.
Remembering Caius’ advice to keep her distance, Yuna stayed back as Caius rushed in and took one of their pincers off. However, the second monster broke free of the ice sooner than anticipated and Yuna cast a quick fire spell under its belly in the hope that it would slow the crab down as it snapped toward Caius’ neck. Thankfully, she didn’t have to worry as her friend warped out of the way at the last second, appearing in front of her in a blue streak.
“They can flank us easily if we’re not careful.”
Yuna nodded seriously, since he’d just demonstrated that fact himself, and she scanned the injured monsters as a crazy impulse came to her. “Then we’ll just have to flank them first.” With that, she was off and running in a wide circle around the monsters in an effort to get behind them towards the cages in the back. The half-frozen one came after her of course, but she was happy to see that the one with the injured pincer hesitated long enough for her to get the creature at a good angle between her and Caius.
“Water,” she murmured, doing her best to control the size of the spray--she didn’t want to flood the basement they were standing in--as she sent the injured crab sweeping away towards Caius. The spell wouldn’t do any damage to an aquatic creature, but it would briefly immobilize it and leave it at her friend’s mercy. Or so she hoped.
While she had been occupied with the other crab, the one that she’d frozen earlier caught up to her, and Yuna let out a startled squeak as she fell backward to avoid its claws. They closed with so much force that she had no doubt that it would have taken her arm off if she hadn’t moved, and she was a bit appalled at how much bigger the creature looked now that it was closer. Stuck on the ground and far from Caius, she had little other options as she raised her staff and used up her biggest spell. “Holy!”

She was right for the most part, except for the fact that Vordun had his own free will and very much could and would attack someone if he felt like it. They were just lucky that typically, Vordun didn't feel like it unless it was clear that said person was an immediate threat to Caius. The way these people wanted to handle these monsters, they had no intention of letting them have wills of their own. They were killing machines, nothing more. It was a pitiful existence and even Caius could feel even the slightest pang of pity for these monsters. Even if they resembled daemons far too much for his liking.
Yuna suggested searching the office earlier for evidence, and he nodded his head. Good, that was a good call. That would be where they'd head next, once they dealt with the immediate threat. Yuna indicated they should flank the monsters before they flank them. It was possible, but as Yuna was primarily a mage, he wasn't sure if it was viable. With Celes maybe, he could pull it off. But he knew he couldn't compare every team-up with him and Celes. They just complimented each other absurdly well in battle, the comparison was unfair.
Well they were gonna try anyway as Yuna took off at a run. The plan was risky, but Caius did risky all the time, he couldn't just keep her from trying it. He moved to get into position, as Yuna diverted attention. Yuna sent one of them flying towards Caius with a water spell -- a good idea, he could admit. "THUNDER!" Caius called out as he hit the crab with a Thunder spell on the rebound. Between its own elemental affinity and being soaked, that would do a number on it. It was certainly enough to put fried crab on the menu.
But Yuna nearly found herself beset upon by the other one. Caius had been about to fire upon it when Yuna suddenly launched a spell that lit up the room in a large blast of light that even sent Caius flying back and crashing into the wall with a sickening crack.
Holy was powerful indeed.

A blinding flash of light lit up the room way more than the dim bulbs overhead could, and Yuna fell gasping to her knees as Holy drained her magic to its very limit. The creature in front of her gave a shriek before there was a thundering crash. As Yuna’s eyesight returned with tiny spots dancing in front of her vision, she saw that the crab was on its back. Its legs gave one final twitch before it went still, and Yuna let out a breath of relief before she looked up to survey the situation in the rest of the room.
A terrible smell of cooked flesh was wafting over the cell-block, and Yuna found the source as she spotted the second crab that she had swept towards Caius with a Water spell. The monster was blackened and smoking from where it lay in a pool of water, and she was glad to see that her friend had managed to take care of it. Not that she had ever had any doubts. Caius was one of the best people in combat that Yuna had ever met. If he had been from Spira, then she thought that he would have made an excellent guardian. Sir Caius had a nice to ring to it.
Yuna started to grow slightly alarmed as she realized that she couldn’t find Caius, and her eyes darted around until they landed on a disheveled head of blond hair slumped in the corner. The stone wall was cracked above him from where had been thrown against it.
“Caius!” Feeling her stomach sink, Yuna pulled up her skirt as she leapt to her feet and ran over to check on him. Dropping to her knees next to him, she apologized anxiously as she checked him over for wounds. “I’m so sorry. I try to be careful about what I cast indoors for that exact reason…” Remembering that she was out of magic, Yuna bit her lip before rummaging through her supply pouch for an ether. Uncorking the glass bottle, she downed a bit of the bitter green liquid before murmuring “Cure,” in an attempt to patch up her friend. Hopefully that would get him on his feet at least. Yuna knew that he kept some potions in his armiger too, so maybe he’d be able to summon those once he was feeling better.
“Here.” Stowing the rest of the ether away, Yuna took his arm in an offer to help him to his feet. “Let’s get you upstairs to the office. You can sit while we research if you need to.” In her worry about Caius, Yuna had nearly forgotten about how she was dreading this part, but it came back to her now.
“Though I don’t know how to tell the man who hired us what his wife’s been up to. This was supposedly their vacation house…”

The Dragonglaive
"Cheese and crackers, that hurt..." Caius groaned as he rubbed his head. Well, that had been quite a rough landing, hadn't it? Luckily for Caius, after that whole thing with Vordun? Every impact felt a little less... Well... Impactful, in comparison. Yuna had seen firsthand just how rough being a crash test dummy atop a dragon was. He'd fallen so many times that this didn't even hurt as bad as he had expected. But it was still pretty rough. Yuna packed a serious punch even when she wasn't aiming for you. Luckily, he wasn't injured, no wounds. Just a bunch of bumps and bruises. Which was a surprise given the big crack in the wall from where he'd hit.
"You hit like a tank and you weren't even aiming for me" he mumbled as he stumbled to his feet after Yuna casted Cure. "Thanks, though" he spoke up, addressing the healing spell use as he got to his feet finally, after taking Yuna's arm. He cracked his neck and rolled his shoulders. Well, he was still functioning. He would take that. Holding out a hand, the glaive summoned a potion of his own as Yuna predicted. Chugging it down to ensure he was ready if they were attacked again, he stretched out once more to see how good his reflexes were. At least somewhat satisfied now, they were ready to go.
"Well, these conversations are part of the job. Normally I would do the talking, but... Since you took the job, perhaps it's best you do it. It'll be good practice" he suggested as he motioned for Yuna to lead the way.

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna laughed weakly at Caius’ grumbling, but she could tell that it was mostly good-natured. He didn’t seem to be hurt beyond some typical scrapes and bruises, and she was relieved that his armor seemed to have protected him from anything worse. “I can’t use it much. It takes nearly all my magic,” she explained sheepishly, making sure that her friend was ready to go before she started the long walk back upstairs. She wasn’t much good on her own without her magic, though she supposed that she always had Shiva if needed. Celes was still very patiently trying to show her how to use the dagger she’d bought as well, but Yuna didn’t think she was good enough to use it reliably yet.
Yuna nodded when Caius said that hard conversations were part of their jobs, though she gave him a curious look when he suggested that she take this one for the practice. “Alright. I’ll try to be empathetic I suppose. I can’t imagine losing your spouse and finding out it was because they were involved in something like this.” Truthfully they hadn’t found any bodies yet, but between the hastily abandoned dining room, the scattered bloodstains, and the monsters running loose, it wasn’t difficult to imagine what could have happened. It was a tragic accident however you looked at it. Even if they had been involved in something illegal, no one deserved to die like that.
The sunlight upstairs was almost blinding after how dim the basement had been, and Yuna only just remembered to hold her breath as they slipped past the dining room and back into the office that they had first warped into. Yuna headed straight for the documents that she remembered being on the desk, dividing them in half in case Caius was interested in starting there as well.
“Well I don’t have to wonder what they needed so much meat for anymore,” she murmured, flipping past the top invoice that had unnerved her when they had first wandered past. The rest of the documents seemed similar, which was a bit disappointing. Yuna was more interested in who was buying from them rather than where they were getting their supplies. Crouching behind the desk, she dug through the drawers for a while, mostly finding standard office supplies until she reached a small bottom drawer.
“Customer invoices,” she announced to Caius as she quickly flipped through them. “They’re written to be pretty vague I think. “Ten of item 4A” and so on. But it’s still something to give to the Torensten police…”
Yuna stowed the documents in her bag once they were ready to go, turning to her friend to see how things had fared on his end. “Find anything?” She asked curiously. “Unless you had any other ideas, I was thinking we could check outside to see if we can find any of the other monsters that escaped before we return to the city?”

The Dragonglaive
Was Caius testing her? Perhaps he was. Yuna had proven herself as a potential leader within the Dragonblades, and if they did want to expand eventually, they did need to look to people who could be of help in that sort of thing. But at the end of the day, Yuna had taken this job. On behalf of the Dragonblades, Yuna had taken that responsibility. Caius was just here to assist her. This job was hers. So everything about this job's taking, the planning and the end result would be hers to deal with as she felt necessary. And that included giving the report to the grieving widower. It was a sad, unfortunate part of the job. One of the worst parts of it, even. But a very much necessary one. So today, it would be Yuna's job to do just that. It would hurt, and she'd hate herself for not being able to provide them with good news. But in time she would be able to adjust and become able to soldier on. This was the price they paid to do what they did.
Taking jobs that involved helping people meant dealing with people. For better, and for worse. At least Yuna seemed to have the right idea. He nodded his head. "Just... If they don't react well, I suggest you let them talk. In this line of work, I've found that the best thing you can do in these situations is be a good listener. You can throw a few encouraging lines, but much of the time they just want to talk. Don't argue with them unless it involves them doing something stupid, dangerous or both. They just need someone to hear them so they can forgive themselves about going on for a spell. It helps get the initial stress out of their system. But I'll leave it up to what you think is the best way to go."
This sounded like it was likely going to be especially hard. So the least he could do was arm her with a little advice from his own personal experiences. But they still had a job to do for a little bit longer. Back in the office, they appeared to find little of note. Yuna asked if he found anything more, and he shook his head. She suggested checking outside and he nodded. "Lead the way. There should be a door we can unlock to get out. Or we can go through the window again. Your choice."
