There was one day yet paid for at the inn before she would be leaving Provo, and Aera was spending the afternoon stocking up on supplies. Her journey in Eos had never paused for tired feet and that would not be the case here, either. In the past few weeks she'd learned much of the land she'd been spirited away to. She now walked the country of Serentestra, inhabited by an array of climes and cultures alike. Similar to Eos, but different. Without knowing what was all out there, she had taken to traveling heavier than was typical--ensuring she had three extra of whatever she had need for on the road.
She'd just finished the last of her shopping when a few of the local children flew by her--playing a game of some sort. The pursuer fell by a catch of his foot against a stone, landing just short of where Aera stood. Only about six, the child was brought to tears by the abrasion. Aera waited a moment to see if the little one would dust himself off and continue on, but his frustration had overwhelmed him and he saw fit to cry.
The Oracle set her things down beside the boy and reached out with a warm smile. "May I?" she asked, gesturing to his bloodied knee.
The boy looked up and something changed in his face. There was comfort in this woman's eyes, and he gave a nod. A faint golden light enveloped the injury, and a few moments passed in silence as it was closed up. Then, he smiled. "Oh wow, lady! That's some magic!"
Aera brought her hand back and the light faded. "Better?"
He nodded and got to his feet. "Hehe, thanks!" He waved and dashed off to catch up to his friends.
Aera picked up her things and continued on through the market, eyeing a few selections of dried meat and herbs. They would be perfect for one of her favorite soup recipes. If only she could recall the full list of spices.

Considering how he had grown up, or at least been brought up until he was about 13, you would think that Caius would love a place like Provo. Not too much glitz and glamour, farms and hard working people as far as the eye could see. It really should have reminded him of home. But... The presence of the Starscourge meant that Caius commonly tried his best not to go out of his way to go to Provo if he didn't have to. Still, the people were suffering. And if he could take a few jobs here, spend some money here to ease the economy, and help a few people out in the process before he made his hasty exit... He supposed he could deal with being here for a bit at times. This was one of those times that his guilty conscience had led him to take a job dealing with an especially nasty beast just outside of town. He didn't want the farm folks getting themselves killed when Provo was already so short-handed with all the sick. So he figured he might as well do it.
Many of those sick didn't go outside anymore. So he wasn't surprised to find kids out and about, as he wandered through Provo. He had sent Vordun to hunt, not wanting him to be seen and sent the townsfolk into more panic than they already had been lately. He also needed to figure out if there were any good fishing places, he had realized on his way here, their stock of fish was running low...
Those kids he had noticed earlier though, caused a stir that caught his attention. One had fallen and began to wail uncontrollably. Caius had nearly summoned his blade out of paranoia, but he realized quickly it was just the child. Caius wouldn't admit it, but the mercenary had a soft spot for children. As for the reason...
Well, maybe that would be a story for another time. But that soft spot bade him toward the scene of the crime with healing magic as his intention, but a young woman would beat him to it. He would immediately back up and park himself against the wall, not wanting to interrupt her as he would watch her work. For some reason, she seemed... Familiar. Her face, her voice... Something felt like he had seen it before, but he didn't think about it for very long. He was more interested in how skillfully she applied her magic, even if it was just a scraped knee. It was so quick, and so efficient. It reminded him of Yuna's level of skill.
Aera was stirred from her musing on spices when another approached her, a fellow visitor to the market who, by his words, had witnessed her having helped the injured child who'd run through. She'd not been mindful of who'd been watching her--only done what was needed and returned to her shopping. This man's claim that it had been a "good" thing was nice enough, but to her it was simply what had been right to do.
"It is only proper to use a gift you've been given," she stated with a small smile, turning her body toward him and away from the display she'd been browsing. "Though I appreciate your kindness." That's what it was, to her. Kindness, in the way of recognizing the good deeds of others. A small part of her wondered if this man was just being sincere or if he had other motives for approaching her--a sensible air of caution given her current situation. But while she wasn't naive, she did believe first and foremost in the good in others' hearts.
"Are you gathering your essentials for the week's meals, as well?" she asked. Though the bags she now toted would heavily imply she was doing much more than simple dinner shopping. She was stocking up for the road--not that others around her weren't also doing this--but she wasn't jumping into the fact she was readying to travel. It was better to carefully measure what information she gave freely--the same as she planned to carefully measure the salt she sprinkled into tonight's soup. But she was not hurting for time, and she'd have been lying if she'd said the occasional conversation with locals wasn't comforting. It was easy to feel isolated even among the crowds when most of what she once knew was lost to her.

"Don't I know it" He admitted with a small laugh when the woman gave a simple explanation of her headspace when it came to what she did. Using the gifts he had been given for the greater good? That had been his life for years. In a way, it was still the life that he lived now. But he heard her reasons and he saw her values loud and clear. It was a good answer. A just one. It was people like her that sometimes made him question if being a mercenary and taking fees was worth it. But at the same time, he did enough things pro bono, didn't he? He only took fees in the right circumstances. Typically in serious emergencies, he didn't ask for money. And the only reason he took money in other cases was to fund his activities, and that of the guild, so they could be available to continue to help people.
Still, it made him miss being a Kingsglaive sometimes. When things were simpler. But then again, he wouldn't go back even if he had the opportunity. He had moved on from that life. It was time to stand by the decisions he had made and stop looking back.
She asked if he was gathering this week's essentials, and he nodded his head. "Yes and no. I'm grabbing some essentials, but I also have work here. I've been tasked with the job of dealing with some monsters in the area. I'm also running low on fish, so I was planning to ask around to see if there were any good fishing spots in the area. My companion goes through fish like a machine" He admitted with a small smile. "You wouldn't happen to know any good spots, would you?" He inquired. She looked like she wasn't from the area, but it was worth a shot.
While she didn't know just yet who this stranger was, it was a nice thought that he was out here for such a good purpose: slaying monsters. So used to the daemons of Eos was Aera that the reminder that they lurked here, too, did not faze her. She'd encountered her share of them on the roads, usually at night. Usually alone.
Her lips curved into the smallest smile--one of understanding. She was not the type to charge into the fray directly, though she did admire those that were more suited to it. Holy light wasn't quite as sturdy as a suit of armor. As for fishing?
"In the time I've been here, I've spent fairly little in the way of recreation. Though a while ago I did overhear some of the local fishermen exchanging stories with the field workers. Something to do with..." She squinted, trailing off softly as she strained to remember the exact conversation. "...A lake with golden sediment?" Even Aera looked skeptical on the name, adding in, "I suppose that's metaphorical. Clear waters, perhaps. It was south of the city, but that's all I caught before moving on." It wasn't much to go on, but if the fishermen local to this region found it adequate, it was worth looking into. There would undoubtedly be many native to Provo and its outskirts that would be able to better direct him.
There was a pause, and Aera tilted right to look behind the man, seeing only more civilians and tradesmen browsing wares. She straightened her posture and blue eyes moved up to meet his again. "You said companion? Is he not with you?" she asked. Though the question wasn't one he was obligated to answer, Aera was curious who or what it was that allegedly burned through this man's fish supply.

Caius had spent most of his life dealing with monsters. Whether it was the ones he hunted, or the daemons that he had dispatched on a job back in Eos. To be honest, he preferred the monsters. They were more... Well, their being prominent more over the daemons such as the Iron Giants were a reminder that they lived in a place that aside from Provo... Was free of the Starscourge. Free of eternal darkness.
"Recreation isn't something I do often" He admitted softly when it came to the woman's admission that she didn't do much of it. "But fishing provides food, and my companion and I go through quite a bit of meat when we're together. Not to mention I feel bad for going so long without a break at times, I try not to drive him too ragged if I can. So an afternoon of fishing serves plenty of practical benefit. That's the way I like to look at it. And if I'm being honest... A chance to rest is something I've grown to value too. Never got much chance where I came from."
A lake with golden sediment? He thought about it a moment as she pointed out that it apparently lay due south, according to the stories of fishermen. "There's a dam around the southern reach from here, big building... Maybe it's near there?" He mused aloud. But he would regard her with a gentle smile and a nod after that. "Thank you, though. I'll look into it later."
Tonight, probably. When the villagers had gone to bed, and Vordun would be able to walk in the vicinity of that fishing area without causing a stir. On the subject, she would ask about his companion and their whereabouts. "Hunting, outside of town" Caius answered honestly. Though he had neglected to note that Vordun was mostly just hunting for himself. Or that Vordun was a dragon. Sometimes though, he carried back the carcass of a deer, if he remembered not to completely destroy it with his claws and fiery breath. They needed to work on that.
Realizing he hadn't given her the courtesy of an introduction, he mustered a smile as he held out a hand. "Caius."
So it was mostly a survival practice for him--fishing. Aera paid mind to the little details this man spoke of as they regarded his companion, who he still had not defined in name or form. For the two of them to go through so much meat, harsh trials on the road, and for the other to be hunting alone... Was it, perhaps, a dog? Some breed of canine? Or perhaps a more rugged statured man or woman? She had no way to know and would be left to her curiosity for now.
A small smile and brief bow of her head would accept his thanks. She'd only given him but a glimpse of intelligence on a potential fishing hole but if he could use it and appreciated it, that's what mattered.
She'd have been content to leave him to his errands--the fish would not find nor catch themselves--but instead she was given a name. A first name, and a hand. She would return this in kind, holding out her own. "Aera. A pleasure to meet you." Her voice was softer, warmer--though still audible over the din of the market.
"You hail from somewhere far away?" she asked. "Did you hunt monsters there, as well, with your companion?" How long had this man, Caius, been at his work with daemons? And, of more interest to her, was he from this world or another? She'd already met others like her, who'd been transported suspiciously across realms. It was not going to come as a surprise--a fascination, more like--if this man happened to be among them.

She called herself Aera. He smiled warmly, perhaps warmer than he would normally with a complete stranger. Something about her felt familiar. Her presence was one that soothed him, calmed him. A presence that reminded him that he was safe within it. Yet, he had never met her before. Strange. It was something he soon cast off though, with the mild notion that perhaps it was simply just that she was clearly a kind, gentle soul. It was written all over her face. He reached forward and gently took her hand in his to shake. His hands were like mitts, and his fingers most likely encapsulated hers. Yet, he was as gentle as though he were handling a piece of china. It was clear he had needed to learn somewhere at some point. It wasn’t perfect, his grip was still a bit tight, more than he would like, but it was clear there was some progress being made there. As far as he knew, Aera was a civilian and not a combatant. So he tried to keep that in mind.
Aera… That was a fairly old Lucian name, wasn’t it? But he didn’t give it much more thought than that. Aera asked if he and his companion had hunted monsters before, in their old homeland. He scratched his head a moment, trying to find the right words for the situation.
“Yes, and no” He decided on, taking a breath. “I met my companion here, actually. We’re mercenaries, belonging to a guild. Back in the world I was taken from though… Yes. I grew up fighting monsters. I spent about a decade working as a hunter, during a time where our land had fallen into eternal night. Sometimes I fought monsters, similar to the ones here. Others… I was dispatched to stop these things they called daemons, who grew stronger in the dark. Would rather the monsters anyday, if I’m being honest.”
That was a lot to tell a stranger. And yet, she didn’t feel like one, did she? Still, he knew he had said enough about himself for that moment.
“And you? You look dressed to travel. Were you some sort of warrior princess somewhere far away, purging the land of monsters and evil wizards?” He asked, part jokingly, his lips twitching into a playful grin. Caius’ humor was still a little dry, but he was trying.
Mercenaries? Taken? Caius's story was becoming more complicated yet strikingly familiar to others' she'd heard. The same tale but with different details. If he'd been a hunter in his home world for somewhere close to ten years, he was undoubtedly skilled in it. She had a sudden swell of relief in her chest, knowing this man was well off and capable of defending himself. His description of daemons was exactly what she remembered from her own land.
Was it possible...?
Aera visibly stirred from her inward curiosities when Caius returned her question. A warrior princess? Oh, how lofty a title that was. She gave a gentle laugh at his humor. Perhaps not evil wizards, but definitely evil something. "Back home, I was what's called an Oracle. It was my task to heal the sick and purge the wickedness of the Starscourge. We had daemons there, too. What you described--" She furrowed her brow, her voice becoming more firm. "--sounds like the creatures that plagued my world. They grew stronger beyond sunset. But we did not have an eternal night as you claim to have suffered. That sounds absolutely dreadful." Concern now woven into her features, she looked to him with an earnest tilt into his words.
"If you don't mind my asking, how fare your people? How did you end up here? Were you taken amidst that calamity or did the divines offer you sanctuary?" Had the daemons completely overtaken his home land? How had a forever night even come to pass? What dark magics had stricken his world to cause something so horrid?
Despite not knowing Caius very long, it did hurt her heart to hear his land had suffered--or, possibly, was still suffering. She didn't need to be personally acquainted with the ailing to feel urged to help them or pray for them. It made her suddenly grateful to have been awoken once more in a land of sunlight, where sunrise was just as guaranteed as sunset.

Hold up, Oracle?
That stopped Caius dead in his tracks more than anything else she said had. Suddenly, it started to make sense. He knew exactly who she was. Aera Fleuret, the first Oracle. Fiance of the Lost King, killed by Somnus in the midst of his treachery. Erased from history. It was a discovery that had recently put Caius at odds with Somnus, even causing him to momentarily contemplate taking the Founder King's head for disgracing the legacy of Lucis, and for being the cause of all that had happened in Caius' time.
But if this had been erased from history... How did Caius know this? How did he know exactly who Somnus was when he had met him, and known exactly just what he had done? How did he know Aera by name and position if all records of her existence had been erased from the history of Lucis? Even knowing Ardyn's true past was an enigma to him, all the archives in Insomnia told him was that Ardyn was the former Chancellor of the Niflheim Empire, who caused the spread of the Starscourge in Lucis and the Ten Years of Darkness, who was defeated by the Chosen King.
Someone had told him. He remembered that much. He struggled hard to remember who could have told him, how had he come to know this information? Caius gritted his teeth as he placed a hand to his head, as a seething headache suddenly overwhelmed his senses, and his ears began ringing. It was like being caught in a flashbang. After a few moments, the headache subsided and Caius was having a hard time remembering just what he was wondering about. So he moved to the subject at hand, but first he needed to answer her own question.
"You're from Lucis. As am I" He spoke up, his expression quickly becoming deathly serious. "We might as well sit down. This is probably going to take a bit. Might be good to get something to eat, as this might be... A lot to explain. I'll pay" He admitted. "As for my people... We're rebuilding. The source of the scourge was defeated by King Noctis Lucis Caelum after the scourge's effects intensified into a never-ending darkness for ten years that strengthened the daemons and they in turn, destroyed our civilization. The last remnants of the Lucians fought back from the last city still standing. When Noctis returned after disappearing for that decade, we stormed Insomnia and, as I mentioned, put an end to it."
He cocked his head toward a food vendor, as he started to walk. Realizing this might be hard to trust though, he turned to her. He held out a hand and summoned his blade in a stream of blue light. Something that only the Kings or those chosen to borrow their power could do.
"I enlisted under the King as one of his Kingsglaive when he returned. So you have nothing to fear from me. Regardless of what world we're in, protecting the Oracle remains part of our creed. Even if these circumstances are... Unique."
