They were from the same world? How could he be so certain, just like that? The concern was knit deeply in her face, but Aera didn't immediately jump to voicing doubt. Instead, she listened. Quiet.
What Caius described was...well, completely new to her. House Caelum had taken the world back from a daemon-ruled night after ten years? And only one city had stood in the end as a final bulwark. A fight in Insomnia? To have a whole civilization in ruins, she couldn't imagine the grief and sorrow... The utter loss and devastation must have been so horrible.
The troubled look on her face lifted just long enough for her to share a weak smile at his display of a summoned blade bathed in light. It certainly appeared authentic, and yet the strife he'd just detailed for her was like a lead weight upon her chest.
She paused before they arrived at the vendor, her voice growing softer, more grim. "I don't understand... The divines gifted one of your people with the title of Oracle, did they not? Was one not chosen to keep light within your world? How were the daemons so advantaged? And what of House Caelum? If Noctis was your king, why was he absent for so long? Should a king not be among his people?"
She really didn't have an appetite, in the moment. Curiosity gnawed at her, painfully burrowing through her chest with a thousand questions. How had such tragedy befallen her world? Her heart hurt and she was getting overwhelmed. The woman took a seat on the nearest bench, leaving the other side for Caius if he chose to sit down with her.
It wasn't that she hadn't heard his words about protecting her. She had. But her mind was trying to wrap itself around the rest of his story--adding things up, trying to remedy the blanks.

He knew she'd be confused, and possibly distraught, maybe even a bit untrusting. How could she not be? He'd just told her that he was from the same world as her, but from another time. That he served a King long after her existence, and that her land had been plunged into darkness for a decade. As she sat down and he sat on the opposing side of her, she started to ask her questions. He thought on it a few moments. He wanted to try and make this as easy as possible, but... He had no idea how. Or if it was even possible.
At the same time, she didn't seem too taken aback at the fact he was from another era either. That indicated to him she had already figured out there were time shenanigans in this world. That saved them some time, at least.
"They did indeed choose an oracle in my era. Her name was Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. The monster that was sealed away by the Founder King, who returned to Lucis and spread the scourge once more... Killed her. The dark skies came soon after. The family Caelum was massacred when the Niflheim Empire, in an assault orchestrated by that very monster, besieged Insomnia. Only Noctis remained. By what I know from what I've asked around, and in records... Noctis infiltrated the Empire in order to reach the Crystal and beseech its power to drive away the darkness himself. He disappeared soon after, and while his followers told us that he was still alive, they weren't able to explain where he was. Only that he would return eventually."
He gingerly skimmed over the menu, hoping to try and keep the conversation seeming as casual as possible. He hoped it might set her at ease a little.
"He did. After ten years he returned with the very power that was spoken of. He became the Chosen King, and with the aid of the Astrals and the Kings of Yore, was able to destroy the monster, end the starscourge, and bring light back to our world once and for all. I served since just the day he came back, to about two years after we had started rebuilding Lucis, when I was brought here."
Or did Noctis really destroy them? Considering Ardyn was here... And the starscourge now plagued Provo... He didn't know what to think anymore.
Aera had not been ready for a crash-course history lesson today. Yet here she sat, getting one anyway. And as overwhelming as it was, it was an undeniable necessity. She needed to know what had happened to her world after her untimely departure. She needed to know how things had been shaped, how her people had fared.
Concern was etched into her face, and her gaze would search the air between them in a vague manner as her mind raced to fit all the pieces of the story together. It was so much.
But certain details resonated more loudly than others. Lunafreya Fleuret. The Founder King. A monster. Ten years. The Crystal. Rebuilding.
"I fear a beast so spiteful that it would blot out the light of even an Oracle," she murmured, mostly to herself. "But it is a blessing that your people were able to overcome the daemons and retake your cities. May I ask...who in your texts was proclaimed your Founder? I..." She trailed off, thinking back on the events moments before her death. "My place was beside House Caelum when the divines ruled the family's royal ascendance. There was, however, dissent between the two brothers, and I was slain before I was given the chance to see our Gods' will carried out." Her voice was solemn and tainted with regret.
But she needed to know. Surely this man would at least have that much information with what he'd already divulged to her. If only she'd not met death so soon. If only she could have seen the events play out for herself. If only she'd kept her mouth shut...
"And what of the Crystal?" she would ask softly. "Is it safe, that you know?"

It was pretty clear on Aera's expression that this was a lot to take in. Caius wasn't surprised by that. He frowned as he watched her while he explained things. This was clearly painful to deal with, and it was only going to get more painful. Yet, she continued to ask questions. Even if it pained her, she needed to know. He let out a sigh when she would reveal that she wasn't there to see who the Gods had chosen to be the first King of Lucis. Every fiber of his being told him that it would be better for her if she didn't know. But... He also knew that if she were to find either of them by accident on her travels...
It was better she was prepared. As hard as this was going to be. But only if she truly wanted that knowledge, knowing what was to come.
"The crystal is safe" He spoke softly. His eyes met hers. And it was very clear in his own that he did not want to do this. The pain felt... Familiar to him. Foreboding, even. Like something he didn't want to repeat even if he didn't know what it was, but one he knew he was doomed to regardless. He knew he could stop it. But should he? No, he supposed he shouldn't. She'd find out in a far more painful way regardless, and she wouldn't be able to process it in time if...
No. If she willed it, he would do it now.
"Somnus" He spoke in almost a whisper as his eyes fell. "Somnus became the Founder King."
The way it was delivered made it clear he knew who she was, and that she wouldn't be happy about that answer. He took a deep breath, suddenly wanting to be anywhere but here.
He managed to meet her eyes again.
"The brotherly spat... These were not events recorded in Lucian history, yet someone here has given me the knowledge. I don't recall their name anymore, nor their identity. Only the story that you have now confirmed, the same one that has shaped a few of my encounters here. This world plays tricks on our memories. One moment someone is there... The next, they are not. And you slowly forget they exist. With only a vague notion that someone did something, or told you something, at best."
He bit his lip for a few uncomfortable, silent moments.
"There is more to the story. But I want you to understand that you will not like a word of what you're going to hear if I continue on" He revealed, his voice solemn. "If you wish to spare yourself of it and start your life over here, then tell me. If you do, I will not fault you. But there are precautions you will need to take to protect that ignorance" Caius admitted. "If I tell you the rest of the story, it is very likely that you will wish I hadn't."
He left room for questions, but ultimately waited for her answer on whether this should continue. He ordered his food when the server came around. It wasn't all that much, just a bit of food and a drink. Notably alcoholic. Caius didn't drink much. But this time he was going to need it.
The crystal is safe. There was visible relief on her face, the blonde's hand finding a place over her heart. "Oh, thank goodness..." As far as Caius knew--at least before his departure to this world--the Crystal was being housed somewhere sufficiently guarded, away from wicked hands or greedy minds. That was one less worry upon her shoulders.
But the rest... The rest was not so fair. Somnus had become the Founder King. The words struck her like a dagger to the chest. So that's how it'd ended. Even after her death, the Gods' will had not prevailed. Ardyn's brother had still seized the throne away from who should've rightfully held it.
Caius went on to give more troubling news. This world had the potential to erase memories? And people vanished like nothing? "How frighteningly volatile," she whispered, clearly unnerved by the idea. Would she wake up one day back in the Astral plane as if none of this had happened? Would she lose new friends she made? And what about--
But there was more. More to the story. And it was not happy news. While Aera did appreciate this man's offer to leave her without the information and allow her to start fresh in this world, the Oracle simply couldn't do that. Her fiance was here, and she was determined to find him. That meant learning, that meant seeking. It didn't mean committing her past life to obscurity and forgetting who she loved or forgetting her calling. For whatever reason, she'd been granted a life here--for however long it happened to be--and simply starting over like the past was irrelevant wasn't something she could do.
She shook her head. "No, no. I'd like to hear it," she said firmly. "I am still searching for my fiance. I've heard stories, that he walks this world, too. And I would rather be up to speed when I do find him," she explained, tacking on bitterly, "Or his brother."
She wondered what the odds were that she would encounter her murderer before her lover. Or, worse, both at the same time.

She declined his offer. He knew she would. He knew this was coming, even if he wished he didn't have to be the one to cause her pain. He already had by telling her that Somnus had become King, despite everything. Despite his betrayal, as he remembered being told. His luring Ardyn and Aera under the premise that he was to be the King, only to ambush him. And Aera was struck down in his defense. That's as much as he remembered about the story. The rest... Well, what he had been through in his own era told the rest of the story.
He was surprised to find out she knew that both Ardyn and Somnus were here, and he nodded his head. He supposed that was a little less of a burden that he was putting on her, if she was prepared for it. But he knew it would not prepare her for the pain of how this story ended. "I've met them both" He admitted. "Ardyn before. Somnus after."
And neither were a fun experience. Somnus had barged into their base, demanding to know about the one using the King's magic. In the end, it had been far from pleasant when Caius realized who he was. He despised the thought of Lucis being built on lies and deceit, and the Founder King turning his blade on his own brother.
But he knew it was time to end this story. As painful as it was going to be, she wanted it told. And he supposed he couldn't blame her. He dreaded doing it, but... He knew it needed to be done. She would never eventually find peace if he didn't.
"Somnus had you and your fiance erased from Lucian history entirely" He finally spoke up, biting his lip again. He had already dropped a bomb, and more were coming. He did not like this one bit. Luckily it didn't take long for food and drink to arrive. He immediately grabbed the tankard and drained a fair bit of it. Letting out a breath, he steeled himself for what was to come.
"Because of that, I only have what's been told in scripture, and what happened in my own timeline, to go on. But the legend goes that the Starscourge was forged and spread by a monster called Adagium... One that the Founder King defeated and sealed away, ending the scourge forever. Yet, in my era... The scourge returned, and you know how that went. But the monster, Adagium... Was the same one that brought it to my era. He had a human form, becoming the Chancellor of the Empire that lay waste to Lucis, wiped out the line of Lucis Caelum, and who later killed the Oracle before being defeated. Records say he was immortal, unable to be killed, thus why Somnus had to seal the monster away. And why Noctis needed the aid of the Astrals themselves, as well as the Kings of Yore, to finally put an end to it."
He picked at his food a bit with a fork. He didn't feel as hungry as he thought he'd be, even when he'd only ordered a little. "That monster now walks this land, given a second chance just as you have. Bringing the Starscourge with them. All those people quarantined in their homes in this town, and all across Provo because of the Starscourge. That hospital not far from here, ransacked and leaving hundreds of victims plagued with the same. That was all his handiwork.
And that monster goes by..."
He met her eyes for only a moment before he bit his lip and lowered his head.
Caius had met them both in this world? So then, did that mean they would be easier to find? Aera had been searching during her travels but perhaps she just hadn't been asking the right people? Or she'd merely been unlucky. Poor timing. Though, nothing about this world felt of particularly fortunate circumstance to her.
They'd been erased from history? Aera's posture stiffened, her eyes narrowing. "What?" It was barely a word at all--more of an unbelieving whisper. Why? Why had he done such a thing? Had the fight between them gone so horribly that... No, no! There couldn't be an excuse for something so drastic and mean spirited!
Who was Adagium? If Somnus sealed it away, did that mean the creature had walked the earth during her time, and attacked after her death? Aera's expression hardened into pure analysis as Caius detailed all that he'd learned of their world's history. And it just got darker.
And darker.
And darker.
Aera's eyes were glued to him--not minding the food, not minding the other people around them, not minding anything but the words this man was speaking. The plague. The hospital. The illness and destruction...
And the monster was...
Aera's reaction was, in fact, delayed, as she was hanging off every word waiting for Caius to simply tell her. But he didn't tell her aloud so much as imply it with the way he looked at her--and looked away. An apology.
"No."
She shook her head in disbelief. "No, no there's some mistake," she insisted. "There's no way my beloved would do all of that! He wouldn't..." Her gaze finally lowered and she hugged her arms around herself, shaking her head again softly. "I'm sorry. You've been so forthcoming with everything, but I... I don't know if I can accept that. Ardyn isn't some monster..."
For all the woman's faith, she was certainly blinded by it, now. And yet her conscience nagged at her, reminding her that Caius had no reason to lie. He'd only just met her, and he hadn't known who she was prior to taking the time to speak to her. It wasn't as though he'd targeted her to spread false information and panic her for no reason.
But what if all of it was true? What if the man she knew really had been twisted in such a way? What if? How would she address it with him? What would she say? What would she do?
Aera clutched more tightly at her arms and finally looked up again, waving down one of the servers who'd brought over Caius's food.
"A drink. Whatever's strong. I care not which." Something to calm her nerves. And her head.
Aera brought in a shaking breath, struggling to keep a tight lid on her nerves. She was on the verge of losing it. On the edge of crying. The glassy look to her eyes would say this, but she tried to focus on the conversation rather than stall it with her own doubts.
"Where did you last see them?" Even if she was struggling, she wouldn't pass up the opportunity to get a lead on where she would go next. In fact, she was only more eager to rendezvous with her fiance now--to confirm or deny everything she was hearing, right from the source.

Her reaction was... Expected, in some respect. And yet as she utterly refused to believe it, even with the evidence put in front of her... His heart broke. A fiance, that was what she had called him, right? He knew what a fiance was, and a spouse... Sort of. It was a measure of domestic partnership, meant to spend their lives together as some kind of... Well, partnership. The recruit had said it was the end point of a courting process, which going on things like the blind date they had pulled him into were supposed to be a sort of screening for.
Yet despite their having been two who agreed to some kind of partnership that led to them living together, there was... More. He could see that with how fiercely she clearly wanted to believe that it wasn't true. That she wished with all her heart that her partner, who she clearly cared for on a very deep level, wasn't this monster who had done all that he did.
Did the end result of courting make her blind to evidence? Or was it something else? He felt like he was missing something. If he had spent that amount of time with someone, would he grow to care for them so much that he wouldn't believe a word about them being a monster? Even with it all in front of them?
He was missing something.
While the thought lingered only for a few moments, as there were far more pressing matters... For a fleeting moment, he asked himself if he would do the same if someone accused Celes of these things. But he soon pulled himself out of that question. There wasn't enough time for that right now.
Aera ordered a strong drink. He didn't blame her. He'd already drank the rest of his tankard by the time she had. He had been trying to think of anything else but the pain he had put on her, but...
"Ardyn in Sonora. But that was some time ago. I tried to press him for information. Got nothing. Shortly after I found out the truth, Somnus burst into our base in Torensten, demanding to know who was using the King's magic. When I realized who he was, I confronted him on what he did, and that, as I'd concluded at that point... His fault in what happened in my era. He showed no remorse, told us he hopes we burn and left."
He left out the fact he'd told him while he was leaving, that he hoped he and Ardyn killed each other.
"I'd like, for your sake, to believe they only share a name. But... Whoever told me, their description of him lines up. And..." He trailed off. At this point he was just motormouthing whatever came to mind out of stress. Or maybe the drink was finally doing some good. Or bad, in this case. "... They told me he had the ability to heal the Starscourge. Even the Oracles can't do that without damaging themselves, and..." He paused again. What was he doing? Yet...
"The conclusion I came to, which Somnus didn't seem surprised by... Is that whatever happened during their battle, and Somnus sealing Ardyn up... Turned him into the likely bitter, enraged soul he is now. As for his being a daemon... If I was to guess, his gift likely lies at the heart of that."
He had a few theories. He remembered being told that Somnus had slain Aera. If they were as close as Aera had made clear... Well... It didn't take much to figure out a huge chunk of what had set Ardyn off. Honestly, he felt bad for Ardyn. A man too good, his gifts he used to help turned into his curse. Only made worse by his brother's treachery. Yet, he couldn't forgive Ardyn for what he had done.
"I'm sorry, I... I know you probably don't want to hear all that. I don't... Know why I'm saying it. I know providing reasons for why it might have happened isn't going to help anything" He almost whispered. "I wish I hadn't told you a thing. But I also knew you'd find out eventually. I could never forgive myself if I left you unprepared for it during a time that might have cost you your life."
He let out a sigh, bitter at himself for saying a word. "What do you plan to do now?"
Aera committed the locations to memory. Ardyn in Sonora and Somnus in Torensten. These sightings were dated but they were a good start. It was possible they were still in this area of the continent rather than out in some desolate corner of the world. That gave hope that she would find them sooner rather than later and hopefully without too much trouble.
Caius's retelling of his encounter with Somnus stung at her heart. "He showed no remorse, told us he hopes we burn and left." Aera averted her gaze, mumbling bitterly, "Sounds like him."
It was now that her drink arrived and she took to sipping on it as Caius continued on. He wasn't off the mark with what he'd said concerning the Scourge, but what he described about her fiance, well... If he really had been sealed away by Somnus, then his spite did make sense. Yet all of the bad he had allegedly done, all of the death and hurt? Betrayal wasn't worth all of that. Neither was revenge.
She set her cup down and nodded, still reeling but taking things in anyhow. Caius apologized to her but there really was no need for it. He had warned her, and she had asked anyway. "Please, consider it a favor. I needed to know. Better that I am told in a moment of reprieve versus one of danger." She agreed with him on that--there were worse times to receive bad news (even if she hadn't taken to believing the entirety of it).
As for what she planned to do? Aera thought on it, then decided on another drink. A long one, ensuring most of the glass went down in one go. She didn't enjoy drinking, much of the time. But there were proper times for it. Proper places. Proper people.
"I'll continue my search for him," she said evenly. "His supposed deeds do not change that he's my fiance, and I'd not abandon him even should the world burn." She took another drink--emptying the rest--and set it back down. She locked her eyes on his.
"Thank you. For telling me. I am merely a stranger to you but you've been so generous. I regret that I cannot repay you. And I regret that you have suffered as you have. While your trials spanned a time beyond my own, I wish very much in my heart that I could have done something to prevent it. All of it. Even..." She trailed off with a sigh, and the server came back with another two drinks--one for each of them. He certainly knew how to read a mood.
Aera took hers and brought it to her lips, looking rather dejected about everything but still very much present for the conversation. Dashing away from the table with all haste, in her current state, wouldn't help her journey. She would stay, decompress, think.
"You must make friends easily in your travels," she said, trying to lift the mood. "You have kind eyes. And a flourishing heart." She smiled, though weakly. She meant every word--but the doubt and stress lingered in her face and in her chest. Mostly the latter.

Aera insisted that it was a favour and that it was something she needed to know. And yet... Caius still felt like a complete -- well, you know -- for what he had told Aera. He had pained her, even if it was information he knew that she needed to know, and it was better she knew now than later. He had potentially even saved her life. But one thing he could not spare her from, was the pain of finding out the truth. He wished he could, and yet... There it was. A voice in his head kept telling him something he tried to drive out, tried to forget about, but there it was too. "You failed again" it told him. He didn't entirely understand it, but something in his subconscious told him that this was all so familiar. But one thing it didn't do was make it hurt any less. He hurt for her. And he hurt for what he had done.
He drank as she talked about her future plans. He didn't drink much either, but this was as good a time as any. She planned to search for him, she said. Of course she did. He wasn't surprised. He wished he could stop her, but something told him that would be futile. She said that he was her fiance, and thus she would look for him no matter what he had done. That provoked some questions, but first...
She looked him in the eyes and thanked him for telling her, despite her being a stranger. And her regrets. He shook his head. "What's done is done. And what's happened has brought me to the Kingsglaive, and in turn, to where I can help people here. Including you" He reasoned. He had suffered much, and he hated that he had. But he was here now. He was where he needed to be here and now, and while he may have regrets and things he wished never happened... The here and now was what was most important.
More drinks arrived. A godsend, if he was being honest. It didn't take long for him to start to drown the next. And it seemed Aera was of the same mind as he. Unsurprising considering what he had just subjected her to. She claimed he must make friends easily, claiming he had kind eyes. He smiled sheepishly, and lowered his head slightly in a sort of thankful gesture. Perhaps it was the drink that brought his heart to talking, but he knew he wanted to try and lighten the mood somehow. Ease her, somehow. But he didn't know how. His mind went back to a question he had, that he hadn't managed to ask. But did he dare ask it, when the subject was... Well... That?
But perhaps it would help her think of happier times. He hoped so, anyway.
"If I might ask..." He trailed off, looking to her with a curious eye. "Excuse me if my question either raises bad memories, or just seems foolhardy considering what everyone else seems to know... But you said that you refused to... Well, abandon him, on account he is still your fiance."
He took a moment to try and figure out the phrasing of his question. "I've read that a fiance is someone you've agreed to marry, and marriage is like a domestic partnership, meant for sharing assets, living together, convenience of reproduction. You're going to quite the lengths to find someone who has only that sort of significance, considering what's..."
He didn't want to say "what he's done", so he paused. Considered. "What's happened. Are you two particularly close?"
To refuse to believe it fully. To still want to find him no matter what he may have done, no matter how logical the evidence was. No matter how damning it was. It was clear she cared for him a great deal. Incredibly strong feelings. Feelings that strong... They were kind of familiar, weren't they?
