"It's nice to meet you, Selene," Garnet replied with a smile, keeping herself informal, despite the temptation to bow. She was pleased that she had managed to help the girl out of the situation; she felt like it made up a little for how utterly helpless she had been when she first started her journey with Zidane and the others. "I am happy to help," she said with real enthusiasm, and she was. It truly felt good.
She paused, a little surprised, when Selene asked if she was from around there. Had Selene seen through her disguise so fast? Surely not... Was Selene from Gaia too? Did she know who Garnet really was? "Um, no, no I'm not," she said nervously, fiddling with the pendant around her neck for a moment before forcing herself to let it go, and look directly at Selene. "I'm from... a place called Alexandria. It's... quite far away, I'm afraid," she admitted with a slight sigh. "Uh, where are you from?" she tried to make the question sound casual, but she didn't really know what else to say. At least that way she would have some answers.
"Were you in the marketplace shopping? It's quite fun, isn't it?" she asked with a smile. She still wasn't really used to doing all of her own shopping herself, but she had to ask. Maybe having a companion more experienced in doing her own shopping would be good for Garnet and help...

Sir Fratley?
The name took her back in surprise, because of how recognisable it was. Even if she hadn't known Freya, even Garnet had heard of Sir Fratley. He had a reputation as perhaps the second most formidable warrior in all of Gaia (behind Beatrix, of course). Possibly third or fourth now, after the feats of Steiner and Zidane, but still certainly well known. But beyond that, he was known to her because of what he meant to Freya. Oh, it was rare for the Dragon Knight to talk about it, but Garnet knew what he meant to her. She had heard Freya discuss with Zidane Fratley and his lost memories. "Sir Fratley?" she repeated, in a slightly startled gasp. "O-of course, I know you. I journeyed with Freya, your..." ...lover? Spouse? Paramour? What was the right word? Garnet always struggled describing relationships when there was no formal term. "...partner," she finished. Her face lit up in a smile at meeting him. An ally! "I have heard so many stories about you, it is such a pleasure to finally meet you!" she said enthusiastically. "I am afraid that I may have not been initially honest with you. Dagger is... a pseudonym I use when needed. As I'm sure you will have guessed..." Surely Freya had told him, and he knew who she had travelled with. "...I am Garnet Til Alexandros of Alexandria," she introduced herself, with her usual formal bow. "I... cannot ever truly express my regret for what happened to Burmecia and Cleyra, and the crimes my mother was responsible for. I am... so... very sorry." The words felt hollow and meaningless, but she tried nevertheless.
"I'm afraid I don't have many answers for you, but no... It seems that this is not our world..." Garnet explained, feeling the need to best explain to him. She knew that he had issues with his memory, and he seemed to struggle remembering how he got there. Garnet, when she thought about it, couldn't easily remember the transition either. Just, one moment she was in Alexandria, then she was here, and the connecting tissue was a blur. "Did Freya tell you of our journey to Terra? We know that travelling between worlds is possible. Something... has brought us here. And not just from Gaia, but from other worlds too. I don't fully understand it but... We are not here alone. I have seen Amarant, and Eiko, and..." she paused, her expression darkening for a moment. "...Kuja is here also, and still alive." Fratley deserved to know that. "He is the one truly responsible for all the crimes all of our people suffered. The destruction of Burmecia, of Cleyra, of Alexandria, of Lindblum, all of it was by Kuja's manipulations. I... found him here, but I was alone. I couldn't stop him. Not on my own..." she said, staring at the ground, ashamed. She looked back up, trying to find her confidence again. "Is Freya here with you?" she asked hopefully. Freya would know what to do. Amarant and Eiko were fine, but neither were the type to lead well. Freya was an experienced warrior and a hero. She would know what to do, surely.

Garnet hadn't made much progress in the past few days. She had taken on the odd healing job to keep gil at hand to pay for her accommodation, it seemed a talented White Mage was always needed, but it wasn't particularly fulfilling work, nor had she found Zidane still. She was rather proud of how she was managing on her own; she was no (longer) a stranger to new cities and environments, but she had always travelled with others. Even when she had ended up in Treno she had Steiner and Marcus with her. But now she had nobody, and she had done rather well, she thought. Much better than she would have done when she first left Alexandria, all that time ago...
See, Zidane? You might not be with me in person, but the lessons you taught me are always by my side...
One of the oddities she had come to learn about Torensten was the fact that the beings there were considerably less diverse than she had expected. A city this large should have had a population of vastly different races. Back on Gaia (that still seemed odd to think), you would see a broad mixture of people, not just humans, but people derived from a range of different species. Here, almost everybody was human. There was an occasional person with unusual ears or perhaps a strange build, and the odd swish of a tail that occasionally Garnet thought might be Zidane, and was disappointed to find out wasn't, but the usual diversity was missing.
Which was why it was odd she walked almost right past the Burmecian. She was so used to passing people of all kinds back on her travels with Zidane, it didn't immediately strike her as odd. But only a moment after she stopped and she turned. She clutched the pendant around her neck thoughtfully for a moment. She had plenty of experience dealing with Burmecia as of late. Plenty of peaceful negotiations had started, Alexandria pledging what aid it could to help rebuild Burmecia, although with the damage dealt to Alexandria, that was not as much as Garnet would have liked. She made her best effort to help undo the damage her mother had done, but she knew she would never be able to fix it entirely. She had also offered new homes to Cleyran refugees, but it was a drop in the water. Her mother, Alexandrian soldiers, had taken their homes. And she was now Queen of Alexandria. She had done everything she could to stop it, and yet her heart still twisted with guilt when she thought about it.
It was that almost stopped her approaching the Burmecian, but she forced herself to. He was from Gaia, and that meant a potential ally. Or somebody lost and suffering as she was when she first arrived, and whom she could help. Either way, he deserved her attention. It was like Zidane always said, you don't need a reason to help people. She had to try.
"E-excuse me!" she called out, following behind him in a trot. "Yes, uh, you are... from Burmecia, aren't you?" she asked, dropping into her informal 'Dagger' speak. "I'm from Gaia as well. How long have you been here?" she asked, trying to get the basic information first. "My name's Dagger," she introduced, deciding to stick to her alias. Telling a Burmecian she was Queen of Alexandria here was possibly a bad move, at least until she got more information.

The man who had come to her aid spoke to her, and thankfully didn't seem too offended. The more Garnet replayed the confrontation in her head, the more she felt a little ashamed. There was no shame in just walking away. It's what Dagger would have had to do had she been real. But, no, Garnet had used her position, her power, which was meaningless here, to belittle the man. He may have been rude, but she was ashamed of how she had acted. A Queen's title was not for that. It was a noble position that she was blessed to have, not something to throw around like a petty, spoiled child.
She listened to the man speak, of course a little confused by his... colourful language...
(Yellow-bellied cur?)
She filed away the reference for later thought, to try and figure out what it meant. Garnet may have been naive, even now, but she didn't tend to question things she didn't understand out loud. Not with strangers anyway. She just made note of the term and decided to remember it for later. The man spoke about how her presence as a Queen was a surprise, which was natural, and she felt the need to speak up. "Please, no, what you did was noble, and it was kind. I am... sorry, for my actions. I am who I said I am, but... it's not a position I should use in that manner," she shook her head, a little ashamed, and her face had turned a shade of pink. "It was petty of me. I... was angry that he would get away with shaming me and I lashed out using my title. It was something a spoiled child would do. It wasn't becoming of a Queen. Please, accept my apology," she said with a slightly stiff bow, since she no longer particularly had to pretend to be 'Dagger', at least.
When the man... wait... woman?... revealed that he... she... too was a princess, Garnet looked shocked. More than shocked, she took a step back, slightly reeling. More at the effectiveness of the disguise than anything else. She even felt a pang of jealousy. She had spent the better part of a year travelling as Dagger and never come anywhere as close to being as convincing as this person was in their disguise. Perhaps she should have thought of disguising herself as a man! No, that was nonsense. Garnet had barely any idea how to act as a commoner, let alone as a man.
"Your... disguise... is most convincing," Garnet admitted after a moment. "I... could learn a lot from you," she admitted. And to think, she thought she had the speech pattern down. "Very well, Faris it shall be, if you do me the equal favour and call me 'Dagger'," she smiled, before pausing. "Uh, I mean... sure thing, I'll call you Faris, if you call me Dagger," she replied with a smile and an attempt to speak in a more common manner. It was true that Garnet thought she'd gotten pretty good at it over her year adventuring, but since then she'd been a Queen again, and sometimes slipped back into her old habits, and had to remind herself how to speak in these situations.

Garnet was forced to hesitate when Mitiko challenged her, asking why she focused on the negative impact instead of the positive. It wasn't an easy question to answer. She felt like she had to explain it as if to a child, but she wasn't sure she entirely understood either, and she seemed to stop for a moment, having to think. "It... is difficult, Mitiko, when I think about that day. Had Madain Sari not burned, my life would be completely different. I wouldn't be the person standing before you now. I'd have grown up differently, with a different family, different friends, a different home... It's... really very difficult to think about it. To know that I could have been someone entirely different, if not for the evil actions of one man. Everything important in my life today is because of what happened then. My friends, Zidane, my kingdom... who I am... but... that doesn't make Garland's actions any less evil. He murdered innocent people out of fear. He didn't have good intentions. He didn't do it so that I might end up living this life. Had he known I survived, he would have killed me too. He did it because he wanted to kill anybody who could call an Eidolon. He did it for selfish reasons and my mother and father, my real mother and father, died as a result. That's why I can never forgive him. I can be thankful for everything that I have been given since that day, but I still can't forgive him. Nor Kuja. I'm sorry, Mitiko, but they have taken too much from me." Garnet wasn't sure the explanation was satisfactory, but it was the best that she had.
When Mitiko asked why Garnet had helped save them, however, her heart broke a little. She looked at the confused, blank looking girl, and wanted to hug her again, but figured that she would react badly. "Oh, Mitiko, what Garland did, it was unforgiveable. What Kuja did, for power and revenge, that was also unforgiveable. But yourself and the Genomes? You didn't have a choice. You were under his control. I couldn't let you die, because of something somebody else had done. Just like the Black Mages on our world, they hadn't chosen to do what they did, and if I could help them, I would. I could help you, so I did. It is as somebody very special to me once said.... 'you don't need a reason to help people'. You were in need and I could help," she explained, although she wasn't sure she understood the answer herself. She was a white mage, trained to help and save lives whenever she could. She hadn't even thought about it. She had just seen innocent people in danger and needing help. She hesitated again, thinking back to what those words meant. What Zidane had done for Kuja at the end. "...and even if it is... inexcusable, it does not mean that you abandon somebody to their fate. Zidane has as much of a reason to hate Kuja as I do, but he still returned to his side at the end. You can still care for people, even if you do not always agree. I could not stand by and see an entire race condemned because of the actions of one man," she went on, but it was a difficult topic.
If Garnet had struggled with difficult, moralistic topics before, to answer Mitiko's next question was even harder. What did she call what she had with Zidane? She looked down for a moment, intently fiddling with the pendant around her neck in that manner she did when she got so nervous she struggled to think. What was she supposed to say? How could she convey in a mere word what Zidane meant to her? Amarant would call him her 'boyfriend', but that term seemed both informal and somehow laughably childish. She was sure that some around the castle called him her 'suitor', but that was too formal and not particularly flattering. She looked back at Mitiko, releasing the pendant. Oh, who was she kidding? She knew the truth. "I would call it... being in love," she admitted. It felt good to say the words, even if doing so made her heart skip a beat and her skin burn with anxiety. "I am in love with Zidane, and he... I hope... with me," she answered. Why had she said 'I hope'? She had seen him at the play. The love in his eyes. She knew it really, didn't she? Did she have to doubt herself even over this?
When Mitiko didn't answer regarding who had sent her, Garnet knew she had her answer. Kuja. Of course it was Kuja. Kuja had sent Mitiko to find cosmetics. Was Kuja so vain he wouldn't allow Mitiko near him while she looked plain? The thought disgusted her. It seemed so unpleasant. "Yes, Mitiko, rouges and powders are a type of make-up, along with others. Have you... not noticed that my face does not look... entirely natural?" Garnet supposed that was a compliment on her make-up skills. "The... dark line... around my eyes... is eyeliner. My lips are glossy. My cheeks are slightly rosier. It is not a hue that I have naturally. It is achieved with make-up," she explained, struggling a little. It was surprisingly hard to try and explain make-up to somebody who didn't have any understanding of it at all. Garnet didn't wear heavy make-up, she was a Queen and before that a Princess, she had to look naturally pretty (and she did, most would say), but obviously she also didn't not wear any at all. "Perfume is... a scent that you wear that... makes you smell nice," Well, that seemed like an oversimplification, but the best Garnet could manage. "Many people like to smell nice, and like to wear make-up to cover the flaws of their skin and make themselves feel better about how they look, but I promise you, it is entirely optional," she went on.
She paused, and she tried to think of how to approach the next subject. "Mitiko... make-up, perfume, your new clothing... it can be a good way to find ways to express yourself. To find... your individuality, to find something you enjoy and feel more unique... but... it is an option. You shouldn't do this because Kuja told you to. You should do this because you want to. And if you don't want to, don't let anybody tell you otherwise," Garnet explained. "But if you would like to try, I would be happy to help you. Skill with make-up is rather expected of a Queen, and I learned when I was very young. I do... not normally shop for it myself... but I have done so at times," Zidane or Steiner could be trusted to stock up on weapons and potions, after all, but when they were running low on mascara, Garnet knew she'd have to deal with that herself. "I'm sure we can find a cosmetic store around here, if you're interested."

Garnet's attempted retreat was cut short by a woman coming to her side. It seemed that she could tell Garnet was struggling, her voice gentle and kind, and before Garnet could protest, she had a cloak around her shoulders. The weight of it brought her some warm and comfort, and did something to block out the raging storm and the memories that slammed against her mind thanks to it. Not enough, her legs still felt wobbly, her throat felt dry, her breathing was ragged as the thoughts assaulted her, as the memories of the storm and the fire and the horrible eye kept tearing through her. She tried to focus on the voice of the woman, the one who had come to her aid, and she tried to peer through the rain. Focus on her voice. Focus on the then and now. The past was the past. It couldn't hurt you. "Th-thank you," she managed to say with a nod as she pulled the cloak around her. The woman wanted her to stay confident, and Garnet wondered how she could explain what she was feeling. That she wasn't scared of the storm. She wasn't just afraid. Not anymore. She was struggling with memories. With flashbacks. She didn't know how to put it into words.
The woman asked her name, and Garnet almost hesitated. What should she say? Dagger was of course her alias, but it wasn't the truth, and while... well, there was a lot of her that was Dagger, that in her mind, she considered the part of her that would do something like board a ship and adventure to a water shrine very much Dagger, this woman had been kind to her. She had been gentle. And she deserved her real name. "I am Garnet Til Alexandros," she replied, just as the other man came over to join them, with a cheerfulness in a crisis that almost reminded her of Zidane. She had forgone the 'XVII'. It seemed unnecessary at this point. She found it helpful to repeat the words in her head. I am Garnet Til Alexandros. I am Garnet Til Alexandros. I have faced dragons and monsters, I have travelled to other worlds and battled a man with the power of a God, I can handle this. I am Garnet Til Alexandros.
She looked down curiously at the rope the woman had tied around her waist. She seemed to suggest it was to stop her falling overboard. That did little to make Garnet feel better, because the concept that she fell off the ship and then was left dangling by the rope was somehow even more unpleasant than the idea of being swept into the ocean at all. Not that it was either of those things driving the fear into her. The old man came over to join them also, and helped them work out the right direction for the cabins. "Y-yes, it would be... good to wait in the cabins," she admitted, her knees still shaking weakly as the rain lashed against her and the dark memories threatened to encroach upon everything she was trying to do.
A girl in pink joined them, apparently excited that their ship was captained by a pirate. Garnet had thought that was what the man had said, but had assumed she had misheard during the storm. "A... pirate?" she repeated, her voice more fretful than frightened, as if she was worried about what could go wrong more than being in danger. It did, at least, help distract her for a moment. The girl named Aerith introduced herself, and Garnet found herself having to do the same for the second time. "Garnet..." she replied, pausing for a moment. "...Til Alexandros," she added, because as much as the others were introducing herself with their first name only, as much as she knew it was the correct thing to do in a common social situation, her name always sounded strange to her when she said it without her full name. It still felt a little bit odd leaving the number off the end, but she knew that was a good idea for brevity.
Unfortunately, her dreams of finding comfort in the cabins were lost when something loomed out of the darkness. Gigantic, forboding, looming high above them, she craned her neck to look at it. It was slick with rain, and doubtlessly the water shrine was at the top. The pendant that she wore, clinking and tapping against her own pendant from Alexandria, told her so. It glowed with purpose and seemed to repeat the message in her mind, this was the location, and yet, there was no way in. No possible entrance, and the cliff face was far too wet and slick for even Zidane to climb, let alone Garnet.
On the bright side, the arrival at their destination, and the sense of purpose, began to distract from the traumatic memories. Garnet's breathing became noticeably calmer, she no longer looked quite as pale, and her legs weren't quite shaking as much. Even if she was still soaked to the skin and shivering. "This is our destination," she said to the others, although she suspected they already had figured that out. "But how do we proceed? I can't seen an entrance..." she peered off the edge of the ship, taking in the slick rocks. "We can't climb that..." she turned to the others. "Can we?" she asked for confirmation, just in case she was overestimating the difficulty. There was a time when she thought climbing the Iifa Tree would be impossible, but Zidane and Amarant had managed it easily, after all.

[attr="class,beatext"]
There were certainly a lot of reasons for Garnet to have NOT volunteered to head to the water shrine when the call for adventurers went out. Garnet had been on an adventure, yes, but she wasn't what you'd call an adventurer. At least not by the standard sense. Her white magic could certainly help in a jam, and she knew that she wouldn't be alone, but she still wasn't really one for running head long into danger just for the thrill of it. But her search for Zidane had ground to a halt with the storm, and there was barely anything else she could do. Besides, water shrine? The last time she'd adventured to a water shrine, not only had she handled it with only Eiko for back-up, but it had been part of a key to finding their way to Terra.
It couldn't be a coincidence now, could it, that a water shrine was acting strangely on a world she had been pulled to against her will? Maybe the water shrine would have a hint as to how to get home, or at least, give her an idea that might help her understand what had happened here...
Garnet was soaked to the skin, the white of her silk blouse almost entirely see-through, and the rain streamed down her face with such abandon that nobody could see she was also crying. It wasn't the storm that scared her. Not as such. Not this storm. No. Instead, it was something else. A memory...
There was a time when she had thought it was a dream. A dream she kept having. A young girl, clinging to a boat, lost in a storm, too young to really understand what was happening, only knowing she had to stay close to her mother, huddling under a cloak as the spray of salt water and the freezing lashes of rain soaked into her, lightning flashing against the dark storm clouds...
...and in the distance, a gigantic eye loomed in the sky, glaring down on a burning village...
She had had that dream almost all of her life, and of course, she had learned that it wasn't a dream. She should have known. She could remember the freezing water against her, the lash of the rain, the tang of the salt water as it sprayed around the boat, the smell of the damp wood and her mother's soaked hair as she clung against her. But she had been raised a princess. She had never even felt the rain. A chance of rain meant that any public appearance would be called off, and she never left the castle. She had certainly never tasted the spray of the sea; how did she know it was salty? Oh yes, she had read books, but this was a memory. She could remember the cold rain, remember the salt, remember the smells...
She had just never understood it. Until she had found that boat at Madain Sari. Until she had remembered who she really was.
And now, with every gust of wind, every crash of the waves, she remembered again. She remembered her home burning. She remembered the people dying. She remembered having to leave her father behind to escape on the boat. It was all hazy, all gigantic the way the world looked to a six year old, and all the more terrifying for it. And worse of all, she remembered that eye.
She knew what it was. Of course she knew what it was. She had been inside the Invincible. She had travelled the world in the Invincible. She knew it was just the giant red circular device that rested in the bottom of what was only a very high tech airship. She knew that. She knew that logically, she had nothing to fear. But... logic had nothing to do with it... No matter how much she repeated to herself, it wasn't the same, it wasn't the same as her memory, there was no eye, the eye was just a high tech device from Terra, none of it mattered...
...still, she saw it. Looming over her. Intelligent. Malevolent. Evil. The great eye searching the sky from her burning home. Sometimes the nightmares ended when she thought it saw her, when she thought it looked at her, and suddenly she woke up in her warm bed, terrified and alone. When they had been adventuring together, in the small tent, it had been those times she'd edged closer to Zidane, pretending not to like it when he put his arm around her in the early days, but secretively being so glad of the human contact. Before that, a nightmare bad enough could send her scurrying into her mother and father's bed. She had to stop that once her father passed away, but there were nights she still wanted to retreat into her mother's arms...
But now she was a queen. And she was alone. She had nowhere to run. And she couldn't let it get to her. She couldn't let the trauma beat her. Every flash of lightning put her back in that boat, every glare of light made her see the eye, and she felt sick and faint and as if the ground beneath her was swaying. She felt like she did back on Bran Baal, when she saw the Invincible and had fainted clean away. But she couldn't faint here. She was alone, there was nobody to help her, and she was an adventurer. She had to keep it together...
But still, she swayed and her legs buckled and she felt light headed with terror as the flashbacks got worse, and she began to fight her way half blindly, desperately, for the lower decks, to try and get out of the rain, and away from the horrible nightmare. To find somewhere warm and safe and wait until they had made it through the storm. She couldn't face it any longer...

Garnet was somewhat relieved to hear that Mitiko confirmed she believed Kuja was evil. She had, for a moment, been worried that Mitiko might be following in the wrong sibling's footsteps, but it seemed that she was only confused. She was learning much, much like the Black Mages, and Garnet began to understand as she struggled. She elaborated on how Kuja's actions, although evil, had led to the Genomes being freed, and she supposed in a manner she was right. Garnet had never thought about it that way before, but after a momentary pause, she realised perhaps it wasn't that unlike her own life. "Sometimes... we can find good things in evil actions. Garland destroyed my home and murdered my family. Doubtlessly, evil, and... a very painful memory. One that I had mostly forgotten for most of my childhood. And yet, if he had not done that, I would never have grown up in Alexandria, I would never have met all the people I now call my friends, I would never have met Zidane, I never would have been positioned to stop my mother's actions... I would never even have been a princess. I would... have been an entirely different person. But does that justify what Garland did? Of course it doesn't. Just because we can find benefits from evil actions doesn't make those actions any less evil," she finished explaining. She wasn't sure she liked how it sounded. That was just purely selfish of her wasn't it? 'My village and all my people died but I got to be raised a princess!'. But that wasn't what she was trying to say. She was trying to say that... as difficult as her life had been, as many trials as she had faced, finding Zidane, having friends and guardians like Steiner and Beatrix, meeting people like Vivi and Eiko and Quina and even Amarant, none of that would have happened without Garland's attack. She would have been unrecognisable. She wouldn't even know herself. And yes, being a princess was part of that; not in a vain, selfish way, but in the fact that it had been Garnet's entire upbringing. She didn't know anything else. At least, not outside her foggy memories from Madain Sari.
She noticed that Mitiko stiffened under the hug, and Garnet realised that the poor girl had never been hugged. For a moment, her heart broke for the poor Genome. She supposed that made sense. Why would Genomes hug? But Garnet had rarely been hugged before leaving Alexandria, only in private moments with her mother, or, now that she thought about it, when she was much younger by Beatrix or Steiner or Dr Tot when she was upset. But she supposed she had always understood it, always craved it, and always loved it when she got it. Mitiko didn't seem to even understand it. "That's called a hug, Mitiko. It's... a sign of caring. You do it when you want to help make somebody feel better, or perhaps when you want to feel better yourself. It's... supposed to be pleasant," Garnet offered, smiling slightly and hoping to help her a little. People deserved to understand hugs, at least. "You know, I... understand that we are very different people, but... I also know how confusing the world can be when you first step into it. How odd people can seem, and how hard it can be to learn customs. When I first left Alexandria, I had only ever known the life of a princess. I had barely ever even stepped outside of the castle, let alone travelled the world. I had no idea how to speak to people, how to act, how to walk even, in a manner that fitted in. Sometimes it can take time, but you'll get there, Mitiko. And I hope that when you do, it'll make you happy," she offered. It had made Garnet happy after all. She was much more comfortable now that she had been 'Dagger' than she had ever been as the timid Princess Garnet.
Unfortunately, it was Garnet's turn to want a hug, and she wished she hadn't released Mitiko when she had, just so that she had some comfort, when Mitiko confirmed that Zidane was not in the city. It hardly seemed fair, Kuja and Mitiko here but not Zidane? Fortunately, she couldn't dwell long as Mitiko called her 'his woman', and Garnet couldn't help but give her a slightly surprised look. Okay, in many ways, many ways, it was a stupid, antiquated, offensive term, but there was a tiny part of Garnet that smiled at the thought. She belonged to Zidane, and he belonged to her. That was... comforting... "It's... that's... not quite... what we call it," she commented after a moment, realising that she was stumbling over her words. "I... have feelings for Zidane. Strong feelings. And... I think that he has them for me. But... we got separated. By whatever brought me here. Sadly, being in... having feelings, it doesn't mean that you are together all the time, not when forces conspire against you," Garnet explained. "I... desperately hope to find him again soon though." she admitted.
Her second shock came when Mitiko explained what she was looking for. That was not something Garnet expected from the young Genome, and she nearly let out a giggle. "I am... yes, you could say that," she smiled when Mitiko asked if she was familiar. Garnet decided any sarcastic remark that she had been raised a princess, of course she was, would be unfair on Mitiko. It seemed strange, but obviously the girl hadn't noticed Garnet was wearing make-up (which was probably a compliment; yes Garnet didn't wear dramatic, obvious make-up, but she was a Queen and wore it enough to ensure her skin was flawless, her eyes large, her lips a soft pink, but she supposed it was nice that Mitiko thought she just looked like that). She realised that hugging the Genome, she'd have expected Mitiko to pick up on her perfume too. Maybe Mitiko just thought humans smelled like that, which was... unusual, but she was a strange girl. "I have to say, Mitiko, that seems like a strange task for yourself. Who's asked you to do that? Make-up and perfume... It can be wonderful, it can help you feel confident, it can make you feel good about yourself, and it can help you feel like... yourself, but only if you want it to. It doesn't seem like something you'd want to look for on your own..." Garnet commented, somewhat shocked, but not quite understanding. Had Mitiko made another ally? Surely it wasn't Kuja...

The feeling of being helpless was one Garnet both knew intimately and hated strongly. She always felt that whenever she tried to do anything on her own, she ended up as some pathetic damsel in distress, but being stuck in the mud in a swamp was a new low. Garnet had never actually been aware that you could become literally stuck in the mud, she thought it was just a saying, and while she had encountered resistance while walking plenty of times, she'd never actually become so hopelessly mired as she was now.
And then, in an instant, she was free. It happened so quickly she had to wonder if her futile struggling had somehow broken the swamp's hold on her, but that didn't seem to be the case. Her mind took a moment to catch up, before she realised somebody had pulled her free of the trap. She looked around, to see a slightly older looking man, neatly dressed, if not smartly, with unshaven stubble. His blonde hair was long, and for a moment, reminded her of Zidane's. He seemed to be checking that she was alright. "I'm fine, I'm just-" she shook her head, trying to understand where she was. She processed what he had said. The witty comment about her dress. She supposed that she did look ridiculous. "Hey! It's not nice to make fun of somebody you've just met, you know?" she replied, putting her hands on her hips in annoyance. She was mostly being playful, but it was about the best defence she had, given the absurdity of the situation.
Any thoughts or concerns were cut off, however, by the same rustling of whatever creature had been observing her before, now up in the trees. It seemed it was still following them. Garnet took a slight step back, instinctively placing a hand on the stranger's shoulder for protection out of concern. "I... don't think now is the right time to discuss my situation, but... I don't know how I got here...." she explained quickly. "I assure you, if I were to explore a swamp, I would not dress like this!" she told him, although again, that hardly seemed the problem at the moment. Something was in the trees, slithering towards them, snapping branches and bending leaves. Some kind of big snake, perhaps?
"I'm... not sure I'm ready to fight..." she admitted, somewhat awkwardly. "I have white magic. I can support you, but... I don't have a weapon,"and I'm useless with one anyway, she didn't add out loud. Something felt wrong when she tried to feel her Eidolons. They weren't all there. She could sense... Ramuh? Only Ramuh. The others were gone. Ramuh and swamp water wouldn't mix, he'd have as much chance of electrocuting the pair as the snake, so she had to rely on her newfound saviour.
Once again, Garnet realised, she was relying on the kindness of strangers. She was slightly ashamed, she had thought she had become a professional adventurer, but... it seemed that she still had a long way to go when left alone...

Garnet simply wanted to exit the shop, feeling humiliated and useless. How helpless was she that she couldn't even purchase herself a weapon? She had been so stupid, thinking that she'd be able to do this on her own, but after all of her experience, after all the adventures, she was still just a dumb, silly little rich girl who didn't know a thing about the real world. She was still a stupid princess, no matter what her title may have been. She had thought she had come so far, but now she felt like the same shy, uncertain girl who had first fled Alexandria...
And then somebody came to her defence. And just like every other time in her life, Garnet needed rescuing. She felt so ashamed, so useless. She had thought she had come so far, and yet, here she was, back at the starting point, as helpless as ever. She felt so frustrated. Did these people not understand? She had faced down dragons and monsters and a man with enough power to destroy a planet? She knew pain and loss and danger. She wasn't a dumb little girl anymore! Why wouldn't anybody take her seriously?
Something shifted, and the man who had come to her defence seemed to suddenly be clad in armour, threatening the shopkeep with a spear. Garnet could take it no more, and sprang forward, placing a gloved hand upon the shaft of the spear, and looking at her armoured saviour, staring into that helm. "No, please," she asked, her voice soft and gentle, but with resolve. "I do not wish for violence..." she said, before turning back to face the shopkeeper. "This man is correct. He can choose not to serve me. As we can choose how to respond," she said, her eyes returning to the warrior. "And I am choosing to walk away," she nodded, turning back to face the shopkeeper again. "Violence is something I suspect this man is familiar with. And not something I suspect will dissuade him. But there are... other avenues," and suddenly, Garnet seemed to have a smile on her face, as she took a step closer to the shopkeeper. "Go on, do as the little lady says," the man snarled at Faris, even though he was quite still and pale with fear. "Too soft to even take her revenge. I did her a favour, making sure she doesn't get herself hurt," he beamed smugly. "Won't take my...?" Garnet paused. "Oh! I think you've misunderstood. I didn't want to see you hurt. That doesn't mean that I won't take any action," she almost laughed. "See? I told you that I'm not a Lady, and I didn't lie. But you were right, I'm not really called 'Dagger' either. My name is Queen Garnet Til Alexandros XVII of Alexandria... and yes, I am quite aware that my kingdom is far away. But how many travellers come here looking for weapons? How many from distant worlds arrive? I have been here for a few days now and observed it to quite a few. And if that is the case, you have to ask yourself, how many are from my world? How many know who I am? I am the Queen of Alexandria... and you... shall forever be known as the man who denied me service. Let us hope that it doesn't impact your business too badly, shall we?" she smiled sweetly, and turned to the man who had come to her aid. "I don't suppose that you could assist me in finding a more respectable weapons shop, could you? After all, a Queen does need her elite guards, and you seem rather talented," she offered to the pirate. She didn't have much gil to pay, but she wanted to make a show of hiring this man just to make the shopkeeper more miserable and more aware of her position. Boasting about her title and position was not something she did lightly, not even when in an official position, but it seemed her best weapon here.
Rather ironic, since she had arrived attempting to be undercover...
